Nick@ Night By Nick Connell THE WEDDING SINGER

at Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre

“It’s a nice day for a white wedding …Billy Idol There are shows about the 80’s that just don’t seem to capture the energy and enthusiasm that ran in the streets of America. There were the material girls, the love songs, the rockstars and the wanna bee’s-everybody trying to party “like it was 1999” .Well the cast and crew of THE WEDDING SINGER at Desert Stages Theatres has captured the time and feeling of the 80’s era like a disco ball on fire! This show rocks with true enthusiasm and doesn’t let up until Tina Turner kicks up her heels in drag! Starring Sean Mullaney as Robbie Hart the wedding singer, and Lizzie Baggleman as Julie Sullivan, his new found true love, the party is on. These two seal the deal on a bright and talented show that is a joy to watch. Keeping the story moving are some musical numbers made for this cast. Robbie, Sammy (Brennan Sarver), and George (Stephen Pare) are real glam rockers in “Its Your Wedding Day”, “Casualty of Love”, “Today You’re a Man” and “Single”. There backed up by a company of voices that lifted the roof off Desert Stages all night. But in the end, it was the love songs that this show is all about as Sean and Lizzie shined in “Awesome”, “Not That Kind of Thing”, “If I Told You”, and “Grow Old With You”. This show has great energy and humor that will make you remember the 80’s like yesterday. With extra fun and humor by Barbara McBain as Rosie, and Caleb Michael Rock as “All About The Green” Glen Guglia, The Wedding Singer is a big winner! But hurry, it closes August 1st. For tickets call 480-483-1664. BURNING IN THE NIGHT Phoenix Theatre New Works Festival It’s a curious thing-one man shows. You either love them, or yawn deeply. Richard Warren’s adaption of Dale Wasserman’s semi-autobiographical BURNING IN THE NIGHT is one to love. This story of the Hobo life from years gone by is a wanderer’s tale with heart and song. Starring as our lead Hobo is Mike Lawler. Mike is a kind and believable Hobo with a tale from every town and city the imagination could conceive. His need for freedom fuels the passions of a creative life in search of meaning. His story is made even more entertaining with the support of a melodic song keeper jewel, Danielle Franklin. Her voice and rendition of so many great folk songs from the Woody Guthrie/Pete Seeger era were the glue that kept this train of a story moving. The irony of the piece however, which no one could have seen coming except dear Richard, a close personal friend of Dale, was the writer’s epiphany at the end of his travels. Our Hobo realizes that freedom is empty without relationships and commitment. This writer can’t wait to see this diamond of a show come to life again somewhere down that dusty road of life. Kudos to Phoenix Theatre for a wonderful festival! BREAK A LEG!

Charlie St. Cloud – Review

(moviegoers) are excited about seeing the movie and buying their popcorn.”

Zac Efron (Disney’s High School Musical) takes on a serious role in Charlie St. Cloud, based on the novel by Ben Sherwood. The film “…is a version of the book,” says Efron. “We heightened some of the suspense. We wanted to live up to it. Ben was on set, we had a lot of encouragement.”

Does he like to watch is own films? “Not by choice.” The humble professional during our interview grabbed his cell phone and joked about a mega-sized billboard of himself promoting Charlie St. Cloud displayed in Times Square. A friend sent the photo and he was quite shocked to see a larger than life image of himself starring up at an even larger ladies underwear ad.

By Randy Montgomery

Zac plays Charlie, who is feeling guilt after a tragic accident claims the life of his younger brother Sam. Charlie vows to meet Sam every day to play catch. After his passing, Charlie sees a spirit version of Sam and continues the tradition. Things change when he becomes romantically involved with Tess (Amanda Crew), a fellow boater that loves being on the water. Efron’s thoughts on life after death? “I’d like to think in terms of the spirit of the movie… the people we share a connection with stay with us, looking out for us.”

The movie with the most Oscar® wins is a 3-way tie with 11 each: ‘Ben-Hur’ (1959), ‘Titanic’ (1997), and ‘The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’ (2003)!

Efron delivers a powerful, moving performance in a slow-paced film that speaks a lot to what happens to us after we pass, proving that he is capable of roles typically taken by older actors. Grade: B-

Zac Efron (Charlie St. Cloud, High School Musical) is one of the hottest actors in the industry, but has done a great job not getting caught up in the scene that has claimed the career and respect other young stars in Hollywood today, “I get uncomfortable around too many paparazzi or too much attention. I don’t thrive in Hollywood. So I am not driven to go out there. That’s not my thing,” says Efron. “I’ve got a good group of friends. We don’t go out all that much. We hang out and do our thing. We like to stay active.” A favorite pastime of Efron’s is to head out with girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens and go to the movies. “More often than not, if there are no plans for the evening, I will go with Vanessa to the movies. On a week that I have off, I probably go to two to thee movies.” When asked if it is difficult for the two popular stars to go out in public, especially to their local multiplex, Efron answered in the negative, “We don’t get bothered. We pop in early and get good seats. They AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Having billing in some of the biggest films in recent years has not gone to Efron’s head and he was excited about working with his Charlie St. Cloud co-stars. “I got to work with Ray Liotta and that was fantastic!” says Efron. “I let him know I was a huge fan of his work… and Kim Basinger! We were really lucky that she was interested in the role. It was really fun working with her. She is so talented and so loving and so sweet.” He was just as impressed with his younger co-star Charlie Tahan who plays his brother Sam, “You couldn’t see him acting. To have that quality at that young age is cool to be so natural in front of the camera. To be so young and so professional is cool.” What’s next for Zac Efron? He’s not sure, but the qualifications follow his strict guidelines, “When I read the script, do I get the voice of the character? What’s learned? What’s the message? Is it cool? Is it funny? Do I see myself doing something like this?”

‘Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore’ - Bond, Classic James Bond, animated! Review by Stan Robinson

An absolute pleasant surprise, just when I was ‘so over’ animated talking animals behaving like humans, this second installment after the highly successful first ‘Cats & Dogs’ (2001) featuring the top-secret, high-tech espionage war going on between cats and dogs, which we humans are totally unaware, continues in great form! The story opens, in the traditional ‘James Bond’ movie style, with the opening title sequence and the song ‘Get the Party Started’ sung by Shirley Bassey who’s classic ‘Goldfinger’ from the James Bond franchise, is a mainstay. And, in Bond

film style, Kitty Galore (voiced by Bette Midler), a former agent for the cat-spy organization MEOWS, has gone rogue with a plan to bring down her canine enemies and her former cat comrades, to rule the animal world! For those of us who grew up with James Bond for 45 years of movies and counting, the Bond inferences are cleverly woven throughout the movie with the human world at its norm, and the ‘animal spy world’ with the gadgets and hightech equipment at it’s finest. Its great fun for the whole family, and don’t leave before the closing credits end, the stage is set for the next diabolical nemesis to threaten the fate of the animal world! Rating: 4 stars out of 5! Starring James Marsden, Nick Nolte, Christina Applegate, Katt Williams, Bette Midler, Neil Patrick Harris, Sean Hayes, Wallace Shawn, Roger Moore, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Chris O’Donnell. Directed by Brad Peyton. Written by Ron J. Friedman & Steve Bencich. Warner Bros. Pictures release. Rated PG for animal action and humor. Runtime: 82 minutes

Restrepo By Randy Montgomery

No other documentary this year has immersed audiences into the subject the way National Geographic Entertainment’s Restrepo has. Vanity Fair contributors Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger spent a year on assignment embedded with the Second Platoon of Battle Company - US Army’s 503rd Infantry in what Junger claims is “the strategic passage wanted by the Taliban and alQaeda in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley,” dubbed one of the deadliest places in the world. The troops and filmmakers were stationed in a remote hillside outpost named OP Restrepo (named in honor of fellow serviceman who was killed in action). The doc won the Grand Jury Prize (Documentary) at Sundance this year. We spend only 90 minutes with the troops, but we sense their fear, feel their boredom, share in their loss and laugh with them. A moving piece that is worth a look and the awards it has and will win. Grade: A+

By Randy Montgomery Playing exclusively at Madcap Theatres in Tempe. This account of a serial killer in Staten Island plays out as a horror/psychological thriller. “Cropsey” is a fabled “boogeyman” that appeared in stories of area youth. When children began to go missing, locals started to believe “Cropsey” really existed. Andre Rand was an exemployee that lived on the grounds of the shuttered Willowbrook State School. The horrific conditions of this state run facility for the mentally challenged were exposed by Geraldo Rivera in 1972. The school closed years later, but Rand remained. Rand was convicted in the late 1980’s for the murder of a young girl and has been accused of additional crimes. Whether he’s guilty, or just a patsy for the media and community is debatable. Fascinating, intriguing and downright creepy, Cropsey is a must-see that will set you on a web hunt to find out more about the school, the crimes and the felon. Grade: A

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo

Guillermo del Toro is developing a new movie based on Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion” theme park attraction. Rather than going the comedic route ala the 2003 Eddie Murphy adaptation, the filmmaker is billing the reboot as an “e-ticket ride … scary but fun.”

Be among the first to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

Reviewers’ Roundup: ‘Wild Grass’ Based on a novel by Christian Gailly, French-language film “Wild Grass,” from director Alain Resnais, stars Andre Dussollier as Georges Palet, a man who finds a lost wallet that belongs to Sabine Azema’s Marguerite Muir. As the pair navigates the social protocols of giving and acknowledging thanks, a turbulent romantic adventure ensues. The following is a collection of quotes pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com/Phoenix): “‘Wild Grass’ gives its viewer the unsettling feeling that they are witnessing an inside joke of which they are, unfortunately, not a part. What begins as a mystical fairy tale of intrigue slowly morphs into a frustratingly vague piece of twisted art. There is a fine line between eccentricity and insanity and ‘Wild Grass’ crosses it somewhere near

the halfway point. However, you still have to see it - if only to believe it.” Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): ‘Wild Grass’, with its ‘foreign film noir’ style, blurs the lines between the characters’ fantasies and their perceived realities! Both main characters have serious social issues that heighten as they finally decide that meeting maybe their destiny, oh boy! I’m reminded of Woody Allen’s films when his theme centers on the ‘neurotic behavior’ of relationships. ‘Wild Grass’ bends the rules, cinematically and socially, but hey, its one heck of an interesting ride, nonetheless! Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “You are either going to love or hate ‘Wild Grass,’ and there’s really not much of an in-between. The decision is still out for me, having watched this bizarre French flick from legendary 80-plus-year-old director Alain Resnais a few days ago. The film is so off the wall, and makes so little sense, that it can be interpreted as sheer genius, or sheer madness. Highbrow cinephiles will say ‘genius,’ while casual moviegoers will say, ‘What the bleep (insert four letter word here).’ I applaud creativity in filmmaking, but the creative license may have been taken too far here.”

Enjoy a Nice Sit-Down Dinner For Schmucks By Randy Montgomery

Have you ever befriended someone specifically to make fun of them? That’s the premise of director Jay Roach’s (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) new comedy Dinner For Schmucks. Tim (Paul Rudd) is an executive at a hedge fund. Despite the company’s swanky Century City digs, he yearns to move from the 6th floor, which “smells like cabbage,” to a higher floor for better pay and environment. Along comes an opportunity to score a major international account. Hard work and knowledge isn’t enough to impress boss Lance Fender (Bruce Greenwood) or prove more valuable than co-worker Caldwell (Ron Livingston). Before being considered for the position, he must partake in one of Fender’s favorite rituals. “You invite idiots over for dinner and make fun of them?” asks Tim. Fender affirmatively replies, but warns… no mimes, “It’s a cliché.” Tim’s girlfriend Julie doesn’t approve of the idea. Shortly after telling her he won’t participate, Tim has an encounter with a true idiot on the streets of Westwood who immediately clings to him. The opportunity is too good to be true. A series of mishaps and miscommunications executed by the good-natured, yet idiotic Barry Speck (Steve Carell), an IRS employee/ amateur taxidermist sends Tim’s life into a tailspin and sends Julie into the arms of an egotistical artist (Jermaine Clement). Should Tim get ahead at someone’s expense? Writers David Guion and Michael Handelman found inspiration for Roach’s film from Francis Verber’s French stage play and film Le Diner de Cons (The Dinner Game) which saw huge critical and box office success overseas. “We loved the original,” says David Guion. “We knew our version was going to be different, but there was one thing we wanted to keep; the sense of vulnerability and heart of the main character. Without it, the film would have been mean spirited.”

July 29th, 2010 - August 4th, 2010

“The original was based on a play and felt very much like a play, set primarily in the apartment of the character Paul plays. We wanted to go to the dinner in the third act so that made it different, but the spirit of the original is still there,” adds Handelman. “I thought the French film was amazing. It teased about (the dinner), but didn’t go there. That was a good choice, but I felt we could take it a little further,” says Roach. What drew the actors to their roles and the project? “I thought the script was really funny,” says Rudd. Co-star Carell echoes his sentiment, “I liked the storyline. It was funny. It was a little weird. It had heart to it. The character that Paul plays is very conflicted. He’s not a bad guy, but he’s at a moral impasse in his life. I thought it was a very interesting storyline and ultimately says something kind.” Greenwood points out that “With a movie like this, when you have the sense of making fun of people, it stands a chance of being mean spirited, but it was anything but. It has this big heart. It appealed to me on an emotional level.” “You have to imagine in your head what its going to look like,” says Livingston. “We’ve had a chance to see Steve and Paul work together. This one is even more brilliant than the stuff I have seen them do together before.” Guion commends the stars for the outcome, “Everyone on the cast made their character believable.” Greenwood concurs regarding his co-stars, “From the first day, I was weeping in my handkerchief. I could not stop laughing.” What about the title? Why use “schmuck?” “It’s an ideal word for what the story is about. It has two meanings; don’t be a jerk, what Paul’s character is going through and don’t be an idiot, what Steve’s character is going through. It resonated across what the two characters were about,” explains Roach. Rudd jokes, “My grandfather used to AZWeeklyMagazine.com

call me a schmuck all the time.”

FILM REVIEW – Dinner For Schmucks

Roach is a master at directing comedic geniuses. Taking elements from a successful French film and making them to relatable to American audiences proved to be a winner. Carell and Rudd are perfectly cast and play off each other well. The supporting cast of “idiots” are truly hysterical. A talented cast, creative writing and successful direction makes Dinner For Schmucks one of the funniest films of the year delivering non-stop laughs from the opening to closing credits. Throw in a little heart and tenderness and you have one entertaining winner. Grade: A-

Special effects artists The Chiodo Brothers (puppet creators for Team America) led a team of 8-10 artists which included a costume designer who created 70 unique mice for 16 dioramas. In total, several weeks of man hours were dedicated to creating the important props for the film. “I was astounded by the detail in the mouse dioramas. The guys that put them together, the man hours, the attention to detail, the commitment. Those dioramas were astounding. Things like that truly help tell you a lot about the character,” says Carell. “I hope at some point to own one for my house, either the Ben Franklin or the Evil Kenevil. I would love to have a mouse diorama in my house displayed proudly.”

A “Shmuck” Love His Mice By Randy Montgomery

In Dinner For Schmucks, Steve Carell’s character Barry has an interesting hobby; anthromorphic taxidermy, involving mice. The process gives human characteristics to animals that have passed. The hobby doesn’t come off creepy, rather provides quite a few laughs and defines Barry’s charm. The process dates back to Victorian times. These “mousterpieces” adds additional hilarity to the already funny comedy. “It’s a hobby,” proclaims Barry proudly displaying the “Mousealisa.” “I’m giving them (the mice) a second chance.”

After playing their final Sistah Blues show last year, singer/harmonicist Raya and guitarist Dalessandro made it an allgender affair by joining forces with a trio of talented journeymen: guitarist James Robertson, bassist Scott Alamprese and drummer-vocalist Dale Loyola. Some Shows Not To Miss This Week... BY KATE O’HARE

Last season, the summer series “Shaq Vs.” pitted NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal against other athletes in their respective sports. A new season premieres Tuesday, Aug. 3, on ABC, but this time around, for half of each episode, Shaq is out of his athletic comfort zone, whether it’s taking on the best in the kitchen, at a spelling bee or on a NASCAR track. Calling in from an airport on his way to Las Vegas, executive producer Will Staeger says, “We’re shooting three half episodes next week. He’s going up against Sugar Shane Mosley for this season’s boxing episode. We’re also shooting our magic episode, so he’s challenging Penn & Teller. We’re doing the competitive eating shoot there as well.

“We have not finalized what type of food he will be eating fast. We’ll figure that out.” Penn Jillette, the tall, talkative half of Penn & Teller, posted on his Twitter.com account a few days after Staeger’s call, “Just started working with Shaq. It’s SO bothersome to me hanging with someone so much bigger than me. He’s nice and kind, but he bugs me.” Shaquille O’Neal

You can keep your “Real Housewives” marathons and your overhyped sporting events, because this is the week that television was made for: Shark Week. There’s something about slow-motion video of a great white leaping through the air to sample some tasty seal that makes us not leave the couch for anything other than an actual shark attack. And if that were to happen – because we do tend to watch a lot of TV while gently paddling our surfboard off the coast of South Africa – we’d be prepared, because we’d be tuned in to “Shark Attack Survival Guide” Monday, Aug. 2, on Discovery Channel. So if you spend a lot of time in the ocean, call your friends and throw a “Shark Attack Survival Guide” party!

Being a young superhero might have its appeal, but those who tackle it in director Matthew Vaughn’s (“Layer Cake”) fantasyadventure – based on a comic-book series – find it much rougher turf than they thought. A youth (Aaron Johnson) makes himself a selfstyled avenger of crime, eventually aligning with a similar vigilante (Chloe Grace Moretz) ... and facing very real danger as they oppose a drug dealer. Nicolas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (“Superbad”) and Mark Strong (“Sherlock Holmes”) also star in the film, which has harsher violence than some may expect. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

Controversial director Roman Polanski shows he still has the stuff to make a compelling drama by adapting novelist Robert Harris’ story of a writer (Ewan McGregor) summoned to help a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan) prepare the latter’s memoirs. While fascinated by his subject, the author discovers certain facts that ultimately place him in peril; the strong cast also includes Kim Cattrall (“Sex and the City”), Tom Wilkinson, Olivia Williams, Timothy Hutton, Eli Wallach and James Belushi. Liam Neeson has been going for overt action this summer in “The A-Team,” but he deals in a largely cerebral form of suspense in this melodrama about an apparent funeral director with a profound effect on a car accident victim (Christina Ricci). He tells her she’s dead, but she’s not so sure ... nor is her boyfriend (Justin Long), who comes to suspect he isn’t getting the truth about his love’s fate. Nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film, director and co-screenwriter Jacques Audiard’s drama traces a young man’s (Tahar Rahim) experiences in prison. Tired of chicken? Bored with the same old burgers? Try goat. It’s low in fat, high in protein, vitamins and minerals, and just as versatile as beef. You can bake, barbecue, stew, sear, or grill it. Add it to chili, tacos, burritos, tamales, or salads. Make it into burgers, meatballs, kafta kabobs, or anything else you’d like. Goat meat provides most of the animal protein for people in North African and Middle Eastern nations. It’s also prized by people in the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Mexico, and developing tropical countries. Now you can get locally-raised, hormone- and antibiotic-free goat meat here in the valley from Jannie

and Eddie Key of Circle Key Farm. They raise and breed the goats and feed them a steady diet of (herbicide and pesticide-free) grass. The goats don’t get grain, which keeps them healthier and makes their meat more nutritious. When cooking goat, use a lower temperature and slower cooking time. Marinate and the meat to add moisture for grilling or roasting in cooking. Preheat the grill on high, then turn it

to medium-low after placing the meat on the grill. Turn it often and baste it for best results. Add bacon fat or olive, coconut, or avocado oil to the pan when cooking burgers or meatballs; and be careful to avoid overcooking. Leaner meat cooks faster because it has very little insulation (fat). Where can you get Circle Key Goat Meat? The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

swill with no cohesiveness and no real flavor except for the burn of alcohol. No need to discuss specifics, you may already know who they are.

While it’s only been six months since we discussed Extreme Beers in this column, a recent turn of events begs more discussion, not necessarily on Extreme Beers as an entire group, but specifically regarding high ABV (Alcohol By Volume) beers. The folks at Scottish owned BrewDog recently created a beer that may very well end the ABV competition once and for all. And, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Many attempts to push the alcohol limits of brewing have resulted in fine products, one need look no further than World Wide Stout or 120 Minute IPA to see that. However, many, if not most, of these attempts have produced extremely high alcohol

July 29th, 2010 - August 4th, 2010

Sometime back, BrewDog came out with a beer called Tactical Nuclear Penguin which weighed in at 32% ABV making it, at the time, the highest alcohol beer ever commercially produced, far eclipsing Sam Adams Utopias at 27% (and $150 a bottle) and at only $53 for a bottle was a relative bargain given future efforts. This beer was done in the “Ice” style, frozen for three weeks and then removing non-alcohol product to produce a concentrated, intensely flavored beer. Their title lasted only a few weeks as a German brewery fired back with Schorschbock, which was 40% alcohol. Focusing on their German rivals, BrewDog upped the ante in this arms race by coming out with Sink the Bismarck! 41% of alcohol and a reference to a 1960 movie about the true story of the Royal Navy’s efforts to locate and destroy a German battleship during World War II, ensured a response from the Germans. Sure enough, the next round fired was Schorschbock 43, which was 43% alcohol. Just this week, BrewDog, notwithstanding their previous penguin related product, may have dropped the

brewing equivalent of a nuclear bomb in this war of ABV. The End of History is a nod to Francis Fukuyama’s 1989 essay on democracy as the final form of government. Claiming that history is an evolutionary process and that events still occur even at the end of it puts Fukuyama somewhat in argument with Karl Marx. Regardless of philosophical differences, which can be discussed at a different time, in a different forum, BrewDog has once again defeated the Germans. It’s not just the 55% of alcohol that puts The End of History over the top. It’s not the statement from BrewDog that says “This 55% beer should be drank in small servings whilst exuding an endearing pseudo vigilance and reverence for Mr Stoat. This is to be enjoyed with a weather eye on the horizon for inflatable alcohol industry Nazis, judgemental washed up neoprohibitionists or any grandiloquent, ostentatious foxes.” It’s not even the $765 price tag or the fact that only 12 of these were produced. It’s the fact that the “Mr. Stoat” referenced above is, in fact, an actual stoat, or ermine. For whatever reason, BrewDog has enlisted its own personal taxidermist to literally cram this product down the throat of small animals. Each bottle is professionally inserted in a dead stoat or a dead squirrel. In order to pour this product, one removes the cap, grabs the side of the stuffed

decanter and pours. Hopefully the folks who put this magazine together have included a picture of this unique delivery system somewhere around this article for your perusal. By the way, all 12 bottles sold out on day one. Presumably the Germans will attempt to counter this effort, but, while they might top the alcohol content, how can they possibly top Mr. Stoat and Mr. Squirrel? This should be game over, check please time. None of this really impacts us except to highlight what has been going on for several years, which is the attempt to produce higher alcohol, flavorful and enjoyable beers that, given their strength, can be consumed in a slower fashion, perhaps in the manner of a fine cognac. We see a few of these beers pass through Arizona. Most notable is probably Angel’s Share produced by Lost Abbey. This barrel aged barleywine references the seepage and evaporation that occurs in the wood barrels, known to whiskey distillers as a little taste for heavenly beings. We also have seen some special treats from breweries like Alaskan, Bear Republic, Avery and Ballast Point come in and out of the state for our brief enjoyment. Continued on Page 25...

BEER! SECTION

... continued from Page 24 The shortness of availability is due to the limited production that these beers are. Recently Papago Brewing released their Bucket Hugger Imperial Stout, a 10% product brewed for entry in to the ProAm Competition at the Great American Beer Fest. Designed by a homebrewer, this beer

was produced professionally and will be available at the brewery for a short time. Papago already owns a silver medal from the inaugural year of this competition and is looking for gold this time. Unquestionably the king of high ABV beers in Arizona is Sonoran

Brewing. Located way up in North Scottsdale, their 100 Batch Series keeps pushing the limits. Their 100 was in the mid teens in alcohol and was a strong attempt at a sipping beer. The current release, Sonoran 200, is an agave based, still beer that realizes the flavor potential of stronger beers and after undergoing

at least five different fermentations exceeds the 19% mark. You can still find that on the shelves. For their 300th batch, they are talking about an absinthe inspired beer, should be interesting. One of the biggest drawbacks to high ABV brewing is cost, but as BrewDog as shown us with The End of History, if you produce a small, limited batch you can reach your target and still break even. The biggest issue with these products is production. BrewDog goes the route of freezing to concentrate the beer and increase the alcohol. Many brewers prefer, however, to up the ABV naturally. Beer yeast will only withstand so much alcohol and will typically die out around 13%. So it becomes necessary to do multiple fermentations adding more robust yeast each time, such as champagne or distiller’s yeast. For a beer that ultimately will not be a regular production item, and will not be particularly profitable it’s a lot of work for the small brewer. While high ABV beers are fun to talk about, and the bragging rights associated with obtaining a bottle, or even a sip of one of these if nice, its still not what beer is about. Brewers are also looking to make incredibly flavorful, everyday beers, whether they be IPAs, Stouts, Ambers, Wheat or any of the myriad of other styles that can be produced for regular consumption. These are the beers we can and do enjoy regularly. Let the brewers enjoy their quest for immortality with high alcohol and road kill, as long as they still produce a great everyday product.

If only every single woman were as lucky as Ali Fedotowsky: She had 25 vetted men ready to woo her and logistics for dates worked out. While most women spend hours fretting over what to wear, Fedotowsky, better known as ABC’s “The Bachelorette,” which has its finale Monday, Aug. 2, has costumer Cary Fetman to garb her. In the finale, she wears an Alberto Makali peach chiffon gown with a ribbed bustier dusted with silver and bronze stones. “I have gotten to wear some amazing dresses and gowns,” Fedotowsky says. “I definitely enjoy it and appreciate the fact that I get to wear them. I feel so out of place.” “She likes that cutesy kind of look,” Fetman says. “Rolled-up jeans with a tank top – if she could, that is what she would have worn every day. And yet she did dress up and play sexy girl.” “I have to put on heels, and I am tripping and slipping,” Fedotowsky says. Unlike many shows where designers create dresses, all of the roughly 100 outfits on “The Bachelorette” are bought. The gown in the premiere was from Pamela Dennis. She also wears gowns from the second lines (not as expensive as haute couture) of Badgley Mischka and Carmen Marc Valvo. Fetman shops for Fedotowsky at Neiman Marcus, Barneys and Macy’s. After department stores, Fetman hits boutiques: Planet Blue and Intermix. “In some of these stores, you find one piece or two pieces. That’s where you go after you have your bulk (of the wardrobe),” Fetman says. “That’s what gives you those special pieces.”

Two unrelated things happened almost exactly 10 years apart, and nobody could have predicted how they would eventually become intertwined. Director Steven Spielberg’s heart-stopping thrill ride “Jaws,” based on the novel by Peter Benchley, hit theaters on June 20, 1975, turning the mysterious great white shark from an enigma into the ultimate nemesis (even if a frequently malfunctioning mechanical shark nicknamed Bruce played the title role in most scenes). On June 17, 1985, Discovery Channel launched, and then only a bit over two years later, on July 27, 1987, it premiered Shark Week, a programming event showcasing films exploring all things shark. Now, in 2010, “Jaws” celebrates its 35th anniversary, while Discovery marks its 25th. And starting on Sunday, Aug. 1, with a special called “Ultimate Air Jaws,” “Shark Week” launches its 23rd annual edition. This year also saw the debut of a new fake shark whose name also begins with B. On June 14, Craig Ferguson, the Scottish-born star of CBS’ “The Late Late Show,” announced on his show that he would be host of this year’s Shark Week event with an appearance by Brian the puppet shark, who inexplicably spoke with a very posh British accent. After explaining how much he loves Discovery Channel – calling it “an excellent channel, much better than CBS, that features lots of animals eating other animals, kind of my thing, really” – and making a pro forma lawyers-are-sharks joke, Brian proceeded to call upon all the sharks of the world (along with barracudas, “which is not a shark, but still quite scary”) to gather in the Bahamas,

where Ferguson will be diving with sharks. Apparently the goal is to eat him, “then finally we can get Craig Kilborn back!” First up is the aforementioned “Ultimate Air Jaws,” in which shark expert Chris Fallows and filmmaker Jeff Kurr (“Air Jaws,” “Air Jaws 2”) return to the coast of South Africa. Also on Sunday is “Into the Shark Bite,” created by the producers of Discovery’s “Time Warp” series. Filmmakers use high-speed HD cameras to literally go inside a shark’s jaws. On Monday, Aug. 2, is “Shark Attack Survival Guide,” in which Green Beret Terry Schappert shows … well, that should be selfexplanatory. Also on Monday is “Day of the Shark,” recounting the stories of six people who survived shark attacks. “Shark Bite Beach” comes up on Tuesday, Aug. 3, recalling the year 2008, which saw multiple shark attacks on normally peaceful beaches in Mexico and Southern California. Then, on Wednesday, Aug. 4, is Ferguson’s “Best Bites,” which reviews the top moments from past Shark Week specials.

so on conversions to race. You will spend another $150,000 to get everything to Reno and 11 months of preparation. And, you must be accepted by the other pilots after all that. You will effectively sit on top of an engine

fatalities. It can happen to the best of them. It is not discussed. Like we said…No crybabies. Just how popular is this event? About 200,000 people will be there September 15-19, 2010. Reno’s population is somewhere around 217,000 total. 40,000 hotel rooms fill and $90 million flows into the local economy. Get the picture? This is not an air show. It’s a life experience. Book a hotel NOW if you can find one or get yourself an RV. For many, the trip to Reno’s National Championship Air Races is more like a pilgrimage.

Reno’s National Championship Air Races An Event Like No Other

There is only one air race in the world like the National Championship Air Races in Reno Nevada. Only one. How can that be, you ask? Certainly there are others. They happen all over the place, right? Not like this one. Here’s why… Imagine flying at 500 miles per hour, wing-tip to wing-tip with 8 other planes, each jockeying for position while scraping the ground at only 50 feet in the air. Yes, 50 feet. Close enough to see the pilots face as he zooms by and so low to the ground that the slightest error invites unavoidable disaster. That’s the Reno Air Races. There is no other race like it anywhere and it is only the world’s best pilots who can participate. How qualified do these pilots have to be? Think Top Gun and then some. In the world today, there are an estimated 1 million pilots. Only 200

are certified to fly here. That’s only .0002 percent of the pilots and just because you want to fly here is no guarantee you ever will. No matter how much money you have and how daring you are, you won’t see the skies of Reno unless the other pilots let you in. This is NASCAR in the sky and nobody is letting anyone in that could endanger the other planes. It’s the most exclusive flying club you will find. Period. Not only are the pilots special, so are the planes they fly. Mike Houghton, President and CEO of the Reno Air Racing Association, describes it this way: “You have spent $1.5 million on your plane. Another $500,000 or

with 5,000 horsepower in a plane that weighs only 750 lbs (your car engine probably weighs more). You “wear” the plane.” And if you should win every class…every day, you could walk away with a grand total of $180,000. This is a pure adrenaline junkie’s flight plan and it’s only for the big boys. Nobody cares about the money. Many pilots think these guys are nuts. No crybabies allowed.

But most all, the air races and accompanying air show is a lot of fun. It’s a state fair-style experience with food, vendors, fun and great for the kids. It’s possible to even meet the pilots in the pits. How cool is that? More information can be found at www.airrace.org

Respectfully, if you have been to other air shows, their “A-Level” entertainment is at best an intermission-quality diversion here. Other races merely pit pilots in the sky, one at a time, racing against a clock. Reno puts everything from Biplanes to Jets in the air racing for their lives. It is the last closed-pylon course in the world and they’ve been doing this since 1964. If your plane malfunctions, or you get caught in another plane’s prop-wash or jet-wash, your only hope is to get above 500 feet and have a chance to bail out. In 2007, the race saw 3 crashes and two AZWeeklyMagazine.com

2010-11 SUNS DANCERS REVEALED ON SUNS. COM The 2010-11 Suns Dancers have been unveiled at Suns.com. Suns fans had the opportunity to cast their vote for their favorite dancers to join the 2010-11 Suns Dancers on Suns.com from Tuesday, July 13 through Tuesday, July 20. There, fans were able to view photos and a video profiling each of this year’s 30 finalists. Over 100 dancers attended the first round of auditions which were held Saturday, July 10 at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale. Successful candidates then participated in the semifinals at US Airways Center on Sunday, July 11, followed by a two-day training camp and finals on Sunday, July 18 at US Airways Center. Dancers were selected based on the combined results of the judging panel and Suns fans.

Trying to get inside the head of Jerry Rice during his 21-year pro career was a fruitless exercise. It wasn’t until after the NFL’s career receiving and touchdowns leader was officially acknowledged as one of the game’s all-time great pass catchers – if not the greatest – that he finally let his emotions take over. Rice broke down when told in early February that he had been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a palpable feeling of relief for a man who never took anything for granted as a player. He was always striving to be the best, even when he was the best. “I am just honored,” he said after hearing the news, “to stand up there with greatness.” On Saturday, Aug. 7, Rice will stand at the head of the 2010 induction class that also includes running backs Emmitt Smith and Floyd Little, guard Russ Grimm, linebacker Rickey Jackson, defensive tackle John Randle, and cornerback Dick LeBeau at the traditional Canton, Ohio, enshrinement ceremony, airing live on ESPN. “I knew what I could do,” Rice said early in his career, “and I knew nobody could stop me if I just played my game.” July 29th, 2010 - August 4th, 2010

The popular animated TV series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has seen its fair share of video game merchandising that follows the martialarts-laden warfare of protagonist Aang. Now, as we wade knee-deep into the blockbuster movie season, we’re greeted by M. Night Shyamalan’s live-action interpretation of the Nickleodeon cartoon, which must, of course, have a video game tie-in. “The Last Airbender” is a thirdperson action title that follows the cinematic tale of antagonist Prince Zuko as he attempts to capture our little baldheaded hero, Aang. As you pursue your quest, you’ll travel through 10

levels filled with fast-paced combat and action. Whether you choose to play as the Airbender himself, the Prince or the Blue Spirit, you’ll have a bevy of unique powers to choose from, including Aang’s Tornadoes and Zuko’s Firebending blasts. If you’ve played through the story and completed the final epic battle, try the game’s multiplayer mode, where you and a friend can do battle against wave after wave of enemies. “The Last Airbender” is what you would expect from a movie tiein game: expanded plot and characters pulled straight from the big screen coupled with quick, easyto-learn gameplay.

Media Link: Aasif Mandvi, the voice of Commander Zhao, also stars in “Ghost Town,” which airs Tuesday, Aug. 3 on Cinemax.

The Night Owl BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA

Lady GaGa Afterpary at Forbidden Night Club July 31st

“More than transportation… We are all about taking care of People!” Night at the Theatre Charity Event Concert Sports Outing Wedding Anniversary Birthday Any Special Event …. Arrive in Style!

CALL today and speak to one of our reservations specialist to help you with any of your special events – we can help you with tickets, restaurants, flowers or anything else to help you make your evening a “NIGHT TO REMEMBER!”

480.830.3944

Lady GaGa’s concert is on Saturday, yet not all of us had the extra $300 laying around the house for good seats and not all of us waited in line at 6am the day they sold out and not all of us want to get screwed on Craig’s List! Due to this, some of us will not be attending. Do I sound bitter? Yet there is something that we can make it to that promises to be spectacular. It turns out that post-show, Lady GaGa’s entourage, composed of bf’s that bring concert power themselves, will be partying at Forbidden Nightclub! Meet Lady Starlight and Semi Precious Weapons. Lady Starlight is GaGa’s long time collaborator, friend, and now concert DJ to GaGa’s show. The two rocked NY’s underground music scene and were even invited to perform at Lollapalooza with their burlesque/rock/performance-as-art show before GaGa exploded onto our MTV. In fact when GaGa was first starting out, she opened up for Semi Precious Weapons who are known for their filthy party band look and sound. They are proud to bring back the sex, and glamour back to rock-and-roll and hopefully make it as mainstream as it once was. Think heels, makeup, and careless lyrics like “I can’t pay my rent but I’m effin gorgeous!” all fronted by lead singer and glam boy Justin Tranter. You may not be able to meet GaGa without a body slam from an oversized bouncer named Buck, but you can party Hollywood style or I guess I should say NY style with her friends. After all who are we without our friends? Make it out to Forbidden for an animated wild night. $10-$15 cover with ticket stub, $30 VIP http://www.forbiddenaz.com/

Josh Blue at the Tempe Improv July 30th-Aug 1st

When I go see a comic or even turn on the TV, my expectations are natural - make me laugh damn it! They open their mouths and I am on the edge of my seat thinking “here it comes,” something to make me forget that dead cat I drove by on the 101. They say the joke and I am still in anticipation of the punch line - oh wait, it already came. Lost hope. Yet I remember the first time I heard Josh Blue say his opening line, mostly because I laugh-snorted my way through it- awkward. Finally a real comic!

And should we be surprised? After all he is the winner of Last Comic Standing- I think that’s proof enough! Josh Blue’s comic style is witty, sarcastic and situational. You would think the Cerebral Palsy would hold him back, yet it did quite the opposite only adding to the comedy and everyday situations Josh finds himself in. A hilarious and new take on the world around us. Don’t forget this show is at the Improv, Arizona’s only home for prime comedy. No hole-in-the wall innuendos here, just real comedy in a real theater with real drinksnot watered down mixers. Show starts at 8pm. www.tempeimprov.info 480-921-9877

Foodies Like Us

Sometime in the past few years a new term came to be a new trend, being a “foodie.” In other words those of us who strive to live in the gourmet fast lane trying new and exotic things, refusing to settle for anything in the freezer section. Sound like something you would be into? Arizona’s Foodies Like Us are out to provide such adventures. After checking out their website, sign up for their next adventure. For example, tonight the journey will be via Light Rail making stops at worthy Phoenix restaurants for a taste of what they have to offer. The itinerary goes like this: After appetizers at the sophisticated Hanny’s restaurant, Foodies will be boarding the light rail for the next stop at the trendy St Francis serving a New American ever changing menu. Smeeks Candy Store is the last stop for Ice Cream in a carnivallike atmosphere filled with delicious and peculiar treats. Now these events fill up fast so be sure to RSVP for a delicious night. www.foodieslikeus.com

THE BEST TEQUILA BARS! Sponsored by Cruz Tequila 38

CRUZ TEQUILA CRUZ del Sol Tequila is made from 100% pure blue agave, and is an entirely different experience when compared to most tequilas. The array of tequilas is vast and tastes can vary greatly, yet CRUZ Tequila is very unique when compared to other ultra-premium tequilas. Their all natural, exclusive distillation and special filtering process yields a very smooth, soft flavored tequila. Finely crafted in small batches, CRUZ Tequila is an exceptional sipping tequila with a much lighter nose and taste, very differ-

ent from the stronger flavored brands that dominate the ultra premium segment. CRUZ Tequila is also renowned for its versatility as an aperitif, digestif and its ability to mix in many favorite cocktails. Cruz Cruise- Flagstaff Where: Monsoon - San Felipe Cantina - The Greenroom - Mia’s Lounge - Flagstaff Brewing Company When: Saturday, July 31 at 12:00 pm until Sunday, August 1 at 12:00 am

THE BEST TEQUILA BARS Join us for our

TEQUILA Classifications Gold Tequila is unaged silver Tequila that has been colored and flavored with caramel. It is usually a mixto. Reposado (“rested”) Tequila is aged in wooden tanks or casks for a legal minimum period of at least two months, with the better-quality brands spending three to nine months in wood. It can be either 100% agave or mixto. Reposado Tequilas are the best-selling Tequilas in Mexico. Añejo (“old”) Tequila is aged in wooden barrels (usually old Bourbon barrels) for a minimum of 12 months. The best-quality anejos are aged 18 months to three years for mixtos, and up to four years for 100% agaves. Aging Tequila for more than four years is a matter of controversy. Most Tequila producers oppose doing so because they feel that “excessive” oak aging will overwhelm the distinctive earthy and vegetal agave flavor notes.

The New Grotto The ALL NEW Joe’s Grotto Music Venue is changing the face of live music on the North side! But before we introduce you to the new Joe’s Grotto Music Venue, definitions are in order. Websters: Grotto, noun: “a small cave or cavern” Joe Grotto, maniac: “A kick-ass live music venue that will blow your mind with big sound, little drink prices, a friggin’ HUGE stage, and bands so hot they could burst into flames any second!” Obviously, Joe Grotto, owner of Joe’s Grotto, won’t be applying for a job at Webster’s anytime soon, but that’s OK, because he has more important things to do, like providing a phenomenal venue for bands and a fantastic place to see live music for us. You’d have to look pretty far to find someone more passionate about running a music venue than Joe Grotto. Recently, the Grotto has gone from just serving shots to taking a legitimate shot at being one of the best small musical venues in the country. “We’ve knocked down walls, expanded the ceilings, built an enormous stage, added more wattage, more lights, a patio…and the list goes on,” said Joe.

46

The Grotto is now 1,500 sq.ft. larger and over 5,000 sq.ft. in size, with a smoking & drinking patio and an amazing new stage making Joe’s one of the best small music venues in the country. Already renowned for a great sound, the reconfiguration of the speakers and redesign of the stage gives it a big concert look and feel. The stage has been raised to over 3 feet, making the band visible from virtually the entire venue, even with a crowded dance floor. The extra 1,500 feet houses a variety of pool tables, July 29th, 2010 - August 4th, 2010

dart boards, as well as video and pinball games, which frees-up the main room for the shows. You can exit out to the brand new full service patio bar which is kept cool all summer with misters and outdoor evap cooler. Outdoor speakers allow you to enjoy the music, fresh air, a cocktail, and a smoke in comfort. This has been an amazing transformation.

What did it cost? “Three times as much as what they told me it would cost!”, jokes Joe. But nothing can stop an idea whose time has come and nothing would stop Joe’s Grotto from becoming one of the coolest bars in town. “It has been a dream of mine since we opened in 1994. After 16 years, we finally got the green light from the landlord, and I started writing checks,” said Joe. Perhaps Joe’s destiny was foretold when someone in his family put a guitar in his hand at age seven. “Thank God I was the second-born in an Italian family, otherwise I would have had to learn to play the accordion,” quips Joe. To this day, his band, Drunk Otis regularly performs and if you want to see a band of talented musicians, playing everything from Jethro Tull…to Stones…to Jimmy Buffet in a hilariously casual and yet powerfully entertaining way, don’t miss them. And, don’t plan to be sober that night because Drunk Otis didn’t get their name by sippin’ lemonade. You can get toasted to their toasts and there’s a lot of ‘em. Joe gets “Blotto In Da Grotto” throughout the evening, personally fueled by 15-20 shots of Ketel One when Drunk Otis hits the stage. This is a one-ofa-kind show. Get the kids a sitter and see it live before Intervention films a show here. Great stuff! But at the root of it all is Joe’s desire to help bands get further along in their careers than he did and his greatest wish is for Joe’s Grotto to become the kind of springboard that rock ‘n’ roll dreams are made of for serious musicians and bands. “We AZWeeklyMagazine.com

are attracting bands from all over who want to play on our incredible stage for crowds that go crazy for great music. With live music 6 nights a week, this is the best place for aspiring musicians to be and we’re getting booked solid now to the end of the year,” he said happily. “In fact, this whole north side is a music hotbed with Whiskey River, Blooze Bar and The Dubliner all within a mile of the Grotto,” said Joe.

And with unshakFridays able confidence, he offers an Mon-Fri invitation to all (2-7pm) Marshall-toting minstrels who would dare to be great: “I did my best, so you could look your best, sound your best and be doin’ your best on this stage.” If music is your goal, then Joe’s Grotto has to be your destination.

Who Plays The Grotto? “DRUNK OTIS spawned of Ketel One Vodka and nurtured on Jager Bombers, stumbled on stage for the first time in December of 2003. Blessed with a following that love us, no matter our condition, we have the rare opportunity to really be ourselves… And we’re pretty friggin’ whacked! Not your average “Bar Band”...not your average show!” Drunk Otis plays exclusively at Joe’s Grotto.

HOWITZER: Ten years ago Jeremy Jalowiec (drums), Matt Moody (vocals/guitars) and Beau Diveley (bass) were high school kids who thought they’d be signed and making millions before they graduated. This drive and ambition propelled them to fuse their love of music such as classic rock, punk, jazz, blues and old school metal into what some critics have called “modern thrash (metal) at it’s best.” Given their wide tastes in music, it’s no surprise Howitzer makes music that pushes the bounds of the metal genre while staying true to the genre’s penchant for aggressive sound and technical mastery. Check out “In Our Name”, the bands January 2010 release. visit www.myspace.com/howitzeraz or www.howitzeraz.com

BACK FROM ASHES: The hardhitting band started in 2005 by lead singer Jason Hobel and guitarist Mike Butikofer. They unleash an awe-inspiring brand of metal delivering a potent mix of progressive, metal and rock with a sound that is not only unique but enthralling. If you had to classify their music by genre then put them in their own: Desert Core. With jaw dropping live performances, the emotion they emit on stage is palpable. No two shows are ever alike. No gimmicks, no circus, its just the band and their fans that makes each show a heart stopping thrill ride that you never want to leave. www.myspace.com/backfromashesmusic or www.backfromashes.com

METALHEAD: If you missed the 80’s, here’s your band: “Lucky” entered the world naked & screaming, & soon found out that life doesn’t have to change much if you play your cards right!! “Steele Wulff, Thunderous bassist enjoys general headbanging and coming up with new ways to make fun of Mikey. “Mikey” or Michael St. Michaels honed his guitar shredding chops by playing in bands like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Aerosmith. Unfortunately, he was never actually in any of those bands, just bands “like them.” “Tommi Legg” hits things with sticks for a living, sings high and dons pink spandex with the best of them. www.metalheadrocks.com or www. myspace.com/metalheadrocks

910 Live and 93.3 KDKB Presents 80’s Rock Greats RATT

You’re It.

Ladies pull out your frosted pink lipstick and blue eye shadow. Gents put on the leather pants and generously apply Aqua Net to that flowing mane. 910 LIVE, is bringing 80’s greats Ratt to the Valley Saturday, July 31. The intimate club concert will begin with special guest Tuff at 8:00 p.m. Doors for the show will open at 6:00 p.m. As the story goes, the hard rocking Ratt helped pioneer Hollywood’s legendary Sunset Strip sound and scene. The “Rodent Rockers” are best known for their songs “Round and Round,” “Wanted Man,” “Lay it Down,” “You’re in Love”, “Way Cool Jr.” and “Back for More.” The band has returned sounding fired up and better than ever. Ratt’s first studio album in 11 years, Infestation, is a return to their heavy, riff driven roots. The band has reinvented their sound by rediscovering their strengths, shuttling listeners to a time when metal ruled the earth and real musicians wore eyeliner like a badge of honor. Debuting at #30 on the Billboard 200 Album Charts, Ratt’s new album “Infestation” is raking in the rave reviews: Located on the site of the famed 90’s music venue Boston’s, 910 Live features state of art sound, LED lighting and professional audio production equipment as well as an expansive 900+ person cabana concert patio. Advanced tickets priced at $30 are available now by calling 602.244.8444 or visiting www.btwconcerts.com. Tickets will increase to $35 the day of the show. How do tattoos make people feel? Among Americans with tattoos, 34% said having a tattoo has made them feel sexier. Interestingly, more tattooed females (42%) feel this way than males (25%).

The North Valley’s Premier Tattoo Shop

Additionally, those with tattoos said that having a tattoo has made them feel more rebellious (29%) while others said a tattoo makes them feel more attractive (26%). But tattoos apparently won’t do much for your intelligence or your physique, as few Americans reported that tattoos make them feel more intelligent (5%), more healthy (4%), or more athletic (3%). How do people without tattoos feel about those with them? Many Americans who do not

have tattoos said they think that people with tattoos are less attractive (42%), less sexy (36%) and less intelligent (31%). They also think that those with tattoos are more rebellious (57%). In contrast, only 29% of those with tattoos think they are more rebellious.

TATS!

Do people regret getting tattoos? A majority of Americans with tattoos (83%) do not regret getting them, while 17% do feel regret. The survey found that regret for getting a tattoo was highest among tattooed Republicans (24%) and among those living in the South (21%). And, the reason cited most often for feeling regret about getting tattoos was “because of the person’s name in the tattoo” (16%). Tattoo by Luke Ford at Crazy Horse Tattoo in Cave Creek.

THE BEST NAMES IN CIGARS

PUFF! Lady Jasmine Cigar Diva A PERFECT CUT No, biting the cigar is not a cutting method. Not only is this ineffective since your teeth are not real cutting tools, but you will look nothing like an aficionado while you’re spitting out the leftover tobacco in your mouth. An easy way to get a perfect cut from most double-bladed guillotine cutters is to lay it flat on a table, place the cigar in it straight up, and snip. This method makes it easy to not only get a straight cut, but with most cutters it nips just the right amount of the head off your cigar. The Best Names In... Owner reveals Incredible Story of “How They Did It”

Brent Simpson’s financial empire was crumbling. Over $1 million in debt, much of his real estate holdings gone and to top it off, he had just lost his job. He often joked with his brother that he should write a book: “How to Lose More Money in One Year than You Ever Though Possible.”

During these dark times, numerous job possibilities did not bear fruit and Brent is now thankful they didn’t. Extremely discouraged and looking for a miracle, he simply asked for one. Every Tuesday, he and a buddy would get together and literally pray for a way out of the mess. Well, not long thereafter, doors started to open and a lucky break allowed Brent to be able to offer designer purses and clothing (genuine, not imitations) at 40-70% off. The debt-ridden entrepreneur began negotiating leases and did a fair amount of horse-trading until he could open the store. Brent explains, “We are able to sell this season’s most popular handbags, accessories and more at a minimum of 40% discount. We’re able to do this

because we have been very fortunate to work with a high-end department store allowing us to purchase their returns. Most of their returns are in perfect condition with the tag still on, so customers are thrilled to see that same purse that they just saw at a major department store, on our shelf for half the price! Many see a 50% off Coach or other high-end name brand handbag coupon and wonder if our product is authentic. I think they’re afraid they’ll show up at the store address only to find a black van with a sign that says, “Knock 3 times for Coach and 2 times for Michael Kors!” The store location is nearly as much a secret as its sources for its designer products, located in a remote area off Mill Avenue in Tempe with almost no foot traffic. Simpson was able to negotiate favorable advertising contracts popular advertising outlets to offer his designer inventory at 50% off or more. “The results were 10 times better than we expected and our challenge now is being able to maintain adequate inventory. It’s fun to have people walk in and say, Wow, I have been waiting for something like this for a long time,” explained Simpson.

Simpson credits the crew of people helping him and wants to personally get to know his customers, instead of just selling them something. “Our team is very excited about seeing business go from dismal to great and I’ve also decided that I definitely don’t want to be one of those bosses who does great, while his employees fail to see the rewards of a growing business. I’m especially thankful for their dedication and commitment during the initial tough times. We are all very aware that the success of the store has little to do with my talent, good timing or luck… And no wonder. The store sells all kinds And a lot to do with a Tuesday night of designer brands including, MICHAEL with a friend.” ANY AUTHENTIC COACH OR OTHER BRANDpact NAMEmade HANDBAG KORS, MARC JACOBS, B.
