Bet You Didn’t Know!

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo “The Green Hornet” will not hit theaters until January but screenwriter Evan Goldberg says that he has already mapped out a sequel. Director Michel Gondry confirmed this but noted that its fruition all depends on the first entry’s box office. “Live Free or Die Hard” director Len Wiseman is in final negotiations to helm a contemporary remake of the 1990 sci-fi action film “Total Recall,” based on Philip K. Dick’s 1966 novelette “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.”

by Stan Robinson Image Entertainment has formed a pact with New Films International to exclusively distribute the production company’s theatrical titles, including “Chain Letter,” a potentially terrifying horror flick starring “The Twilight Saga’s” Nikki Reed. Be among the first to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com/ Phoenix.

‘Gone With the Pope’, a view of a time long gone…

“Badges?... We don’t need no... stinkin’ badges!” is one of the most frequently quoted, misquoted, and parodied movie quotations in history! The original movie quotation comes from the 1948 film ‘The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’. The Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz says the lines in the TV episode “It’s A Nice Place To Visit,” which aired on September 11, 1967, and the 1974 comedy movie ‘Blazing Saddles’ used it again!

August 5th, 2010 - August 11th, 2010

Stan Robinson: While in film school in the 70’s, we as students were aware of the ‘Underground’ film communities throughout major cities in the US. ‘Gone With the Pope’ gives a reflection of one of the LA/Las Vegas - West Coast underground filmmakers. The term ‘underground’ is the true use of the term ‘independent film’, made with private money and outside of the studio system, which means, no censors or ‘suits’ to dictate content!

was an issue. Mitchell started shooting in 1975 and with his death in 1981, the movie was ‘in the can’ as we filmmakers call it, filmed but not yet edited, and there it stayed. Oscar® Winner Bob Murawski, Best Film Editing for ‘The Hurt Locker’ (2010), spent the last 15 years in his spare time editing ‘Gone With the Pope’ in between assignments on the movies ‘Spiderman 1, 2, and 3’, ‘Drag Me to Hell’, and ‘The Hurt Locker’. If you have any sensitivities on race, religion, politics, or sexuality, ‘Gone With the Pope’ just could be that ‘magic tonic’ to help one ‘get over them’! Randy Montgomery: The new film Gone With the Pope really isn’t a new release at all. In fact, it’s over thirty years old. While I personally have noticed more grey hair, a few extra pounds and a wardrobe change over my three decades on this planet, real changes have come in society and landscape, which can be evidenced in this late 1970’s exploitation flick. The plot; a mobster and his cronies

kidnap the pope. Yeah, yeah… no one cares. The real attraction to this film is the comedy (which comes at the expense of nearly every race, sex and size of people) and the surprisingly thought-provoking message about life and religion. You will be utterly shocked by the racist nature of some scenes, but today, one can laugh it off as a time gone by. What will stick in your memory though is a sequence involving an actress credited only as “Fat Woman.” For sheer entertainment value, this restored and newly released “classic” would get an A. Had it been released decades ago and being reviewed on DVD, it would probably garner a D. Seeing footage from “old Vegas” and freeways that do not exist anymore in Los Angeles is an added bonus. Starring Bill Boyd, John Bruno, Carl Cocomo, Lorenzo Dardado, Paul DiAmico, Steve DiBiaso, Nola Hand, Jeanne Hibbard, Jim LoBianco, Peter Milo, Duke Mitchell, Jeffrey Mitchell, Zep Mizner, John Murgia, Giorgio Tavolieri, and Joe Virzi.

Richard Corliss

“Smart Entertainment. You’d be a Schmuck to miss it.” Roger Ebert

“Genius.”

The main plot of ‘Gone With the Pope’, Duke Mitchell directs and stars as an ex-con who has a plan to kidnap the Pope in exchange for the ransom of “a dollar from every Catholic in the world.” Along with the main theme, nothing is safe or sacred ground including race, religion, politics, or sexuality!

You Must-See These Kisses By Randy Montgomery At first glance, the Irish film Kisses feels as if it could use a bit more in the way of the plot department. But, once you get sucked in by the performances of the film’s two young stars, you realize that an intricate storyline isn’t important. The movie is about the abuse the two children endure and why they decided to run away and spend the night on the streets of Dublin. When each of their trouble home lives come to a boiling point, Kylie and Dylan (Kelly O’Neil and Shane Curry), who are both friends and neighbors, decide to flee. We see some the abuse the duo endure leading up to their adventure and learn more about them as the evening progresses. Neither one of these protagonists had any other feature length acting credits prior to this, yet their performances are nothing short of amazing. Their genuine emotion, combined with a surprisingly fitting Bob Dylan soundtrack and black and white photography makes Kisses a deeply moving, likable independent gem that will win over, yet break the hearts of all who watch it. “I have nothing to give but kisses.” Wow. What a line. What a film. Grade: A`

Steve Carell and Tina Fey “DATE NIGHT” Fans of NBC’s Thursday-night lineup will find two immediate lures in this mistaken-identity comedy, since Steve Carell (“The Office”) and Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) are teamed as a New Jersey couple who decide to change up their usually predictable “date night” away from their kids. They claim someone else’s reservation at a Manhattan restaurant, setting off a chain of events ultimately proving to be life-or-death for them. Mark Wahlberg sends up his image amusingly in a cast that also includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Taraji P. Henson and Leighton Meester (“Gossip Girl”). ››› (PG-13 and unrated editions: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “DEATH AT A FUNERAL” If the title of this comedy sounds familiar, it originally was done in England several years ago. In this slightly less sharp Americanization, director Neil LaBute (“Nurse Betty”) retains many of the original elements – including co-star Peter Dinklage – while casting Chris Rock (also one of the film’s producers) and Martin

Lawrence as brothers who try to keep their relatives in line, and settle their own differences, while arranging the service for their late father. Tracy Morgan, Danny Glover, Zoe Saldana, Luke Wilson and James Marsden are among the other attendees. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray) “HELEN” Ashley Judd has the title role in this drama from writer-director Sandra Nettelbeck (“Mostly Martha”), about a woman whose deceptively upbeat attitude conceals a web of deeply rooted fears and insecurities that could destroy her relationships, including the one with her husband (Goran Visnjic, “ER”). She ultimately gets help from an unexpected source. Former “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” regular Lauren Lee Smith co-stars. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) “LA MISSION” A solid casts boosts writer-director Peter Bratt’s drama about a secret that threatens to tear a family apart. “Law & Order” and ”The Cleaner” alumnus Benjamin Bratt (Peter’s brother) plays an ex-convict who takes great pride in his macho image, creating a problem when his son (Jeremy Ray Valdez) reveals a lifestyle his father never suspected he was

Considerable emotional strife results. ››› (R: AS, P, V) “BIG TIME RUSH” The first season of this Nickelodeon comedywith-music series about a boy band comes to video with this compilation of episodes. Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Pena Jr. and Logan Henderson (all of whom retain their first names for their characters) play the Minnesota pals who go to Los Angeles in search of fame and fortune ... but it isn’t exactly a free ride, thanks especially to their demanding manager (Stephen Kramer Glickman). Tanya Chisholm also stars. ››› (Not rated) “ADAM-12: SEASON 5” Martin Milner and Kent McCord continued their run as Los Angeles patrol partners Malloy and Reed in this NBC police drama, which boasted the trademarks of executive producer Jack Webb (“Dragnet”). Though Milner added some doses of cynical humor as a cop who’s seen it all, the basic approach was the standard Webb formula of procedural dialogue plus the facts of the week’s given case. Guest stars in this set include Frank Sinatra Jr. and his sister Tina. ››› (Not rated: V)

You’re going to want to keep some napkins handy, if only to catch your saliva, as you watch season two of “BBQ Pitmasters, a summertime treat returning Thursday, Aug. 12, on TLC. Unlike season one, which took a documentary look at several different barbecue competitions, these six new episodes make up TLC’s very own competition among 20 cooks from around North America. In each of the first five episodes, four cooks will face off in a series of challenges before one moves on to the final round. The last episode will find those five finalists competing for a $100,000 grand prize, reportedly the largest ever in competitive barbecue.

Organic Advantages Better Nutrition - Organic food helps your body fight off infections and maintain balance by being full of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. No Toxins - No pesticides means a lower risk of cancer, birth defects, illness and a host of other maladies. Tastes Better - Those who regularly dine organic will tell you the food has more flavor, fruits are sweeter, etc. Environment - The lack of toxic chemicals used in organic farming means you won’t be eating the chemicals in your groundwater or your next crop rotation. Variety - In addition to fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, meat, eggs, dairy items, and baby foods, it’s possible to buy organic pasta sauces, salsa, fruit juice, soup, cereal, ice cream, peanut butter, tea, coffee, frozen dinners, chocolate, popcorn, snack food, beer and other beverages, to name just a few options available.

BEER! The Best Beers You Can’t Drink (at least not in Arizona)

Being a big time beer journalist has its perks. Breweries from all over the world are constantly sending packages to the AZ Weekly offices in the hope that after trying them, I will write about them in an article, thereby ensuring immeasurable success for their product. The only problem is, I never seem to get these beers. I am pretty certain that the guys in the DINE! section, or maybe the folks over at MILL! are the ones taking them. It has got to be the DINE! guys… they know how good beer and good food go together. I don’t think it’s the publisher, he seems like a nice guy and he would at least offer to share the beer. Regardless, there seems to be a lot of beer that I thought I was getting that I don’t get. I guess that’s true for all of you as well. With all the amazing beers available in Arizona, there are still some that everybody seems to want and we just don’t get to drink. One of the most requested beers is Yuengling. This Pottsville, Pennsylvania brewery bills itself as America’s Oldest Brewery, and given its continu-

ous operation since 1829, they seem to be correct. Their flagship beer is Yuengling Traditional Lager which has a subtle malt sweetness with a hint of hops. It is so well known in the Philadelphia area, most people simply order a lager and receive it. While not a craft brewery (it is one of the five largest breweries in the country), craft enthusiasts do enjoy their beers, and for many area natives who have moved away, it is the first beer they look for upon a return visit. They also can be credited for the first bottled Black and Tan in 1986. The other beers that we don’t currently

get here are definitely in the craft category. Russian River is at the top of that list. Located in Santa Rosa, California, this brewery runs parallel paths, producing some incredible IPAs as well as some of the best Belgian style beers around. Pliny the Elder,

Many East Coast craft beers don’t make it to Arizona due to the distance and expense involved in shipping. Two that Arizonans have been patiently waiting for are Brooklyn Brewing and Victory. Brooklyn Brewing, located appropriately enough in Brooklyn, is known for making uncommonly good food beers and Brewmaster Garrett Oliver is considered by most to be the foremost authority on food and beer pairing in the country. His beer dinners are legendary and accomplished chefs defer to his expertise when planning menus for these events. Lately the series of big bottle beers including Local One and Local Two, as well as Black Ops, have been exciting our fellow beer drinkers in the east. Victory Brewing is located in Downingtown, PA and produces one of the best American made Pilsners in the Prima Pils, they also make Hop Devil IPA as well as the very dangerous Golden Monkey Belgian Triple. At 8% alcohol by volume and incredibly smooth, Golden Monkey can sneak up on you. New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin produces some very sought after beers. Their line at the Great American Beer Festival is always one of the longest. Despite being distributed exclusively in their home state, they are still one of the twenty largest craft breweries in the country. Spotted Cow, a farmhouse style ale, Wisconsin Belgian Red, Raspberry Tart and their Unplugged series are particularly large

selling products for them. No craft beer lover can go to Wisconsin without bringing back some New Glarus. Boulevard Brewing, from Kansas City is also a high demand beer. Bully Porter and the Smokestack series are just a few of the beers they make that are asked for regularly. If you head west, past California to Hawaii, and the island of Maui, you will find Maui Brewing. This brewery has rapidly become one of the most sought after breweries everywhere. Besides making great beer, an appearance on the Thirsty Traveler television show didn’t hurt. Their original plan was to expand to Southern California and then stretch east from there. One problem‌their beer has exploded in California and demand in that state has taken up all the production that doesn’t stay in Hawaii. They are undergoing their third expansion in just a few years, so hopefully someday we will be able to enjoy the Bikini Blonde, Big Swell IPA and the much desired Coconut Porter. If you attend GABF in Denver this year, look for Black Pearl which is the porter aged in rum barrels. This is just a small sampling of some of the great beers out there that we don’t see in Arizona yet. There is Harpoon, Founders, Sweetwater, Cigar City, Captain Lawrence, Southern Tier and many more. Two things to remember‌ after a long wait Arizona is now able to drink Bell’s Beers from Michigan, and we get Oberon year round where other states only get it in the summer;

named for the 1st Century Roman author and Philosopher, is considered to be the first Double IPA and is recognized as one of the best. The Belgian series, many of them barrel aged and at least partially fermented with the wild yeast Brettanomyces, consists of Damnation, Supplication, Temptation and a variety of others with the same naming pattern. Brewmaster Vinnie Cirluzo even got around to brewing the long awaited Procrastination to the shock of Russian River regulars.

and New Belgium isn’t available in many states in the east, while we get everything from Fat Tire to the Lips of Faith Series. So it’s not all bad for Arizona. Enjoy the beers we have, seek out other great beers when you travel, and always keep an eye out for the next great beer to hit the shelves. Now I have to go find out where they are keeping all those great beers I am being sent to review‌I know they are around here somewhere.

There are a lot of young guns these days strutting their games in the world of golf, players such as Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson and Ryo Ishikawa, to name just a few. Justin Rose used to be where they are now, and if he could tell them one thing about the road ahead, it might be this: focus on your game and your love of golf, and don’t worry about what others expect of you. The expectations shot through the roof for Rose at the 1998 British Open, where the Englishman wowed the locals with a fourthplace finish as a 17-year-old amateur. He turned pro days after ... and proceeded to miss the cut in his next 21 tournaments, a stark reminder if there ever was one of how fickle the game of golf can be. Rose finally earned his first European Tour victory in 2002, and he’s added three more since, including his last at the 2006 Australian Masters. But the successes have been skewed somewhat by those pesky expectations – shouldn’t there be more trophies in the case? August 5th, 2010 - August 11th, 2010

Each of the three fights will consist of three, three-minute rounds. Fighting once in one night is tough and twice is brutal. But the tournament will definitely highlight the women’s ability to endure a grueling night of combat. Highlighting the show is Tate, 23, who humbled Zoila “The Warrior Princess” Frausto, in a personal grudge match, with an armbar victory in March at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on SHOWTIME at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

FORCE Challengers main event is expected to be a dramatic and explosive encounter. Riggs, who holds victories over STRIKEFORCE Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz, and UFC’s Chris Lytle and “The NY Badass” Phil Baroni, is looking to bounce back from a close decision loss at STRIKEFORCE: Miami, in January against Jay Hieron. Prior to that, Riggs dominated his opposition in four consecutive wins. The extremely well-conditioned Riggs has displayed success in multiple divisions. In his eight-year career, the 27-year-old has been victorious in the heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight and welterweight divisions.

In the night’s main event, hometown hero and MMA star Joe “Diesel” Riggs, a native of Phoenix who wrestled at Cactus High Taylor knocked out his last two opponents School in Glendale, will look to continue and is set on extending his winning streak his successful run in the STRIKEFORCE on Aug. 13. Tate could face Carina Damm, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert with model looks, who has amassed a 10-fight winning streak. Damm is the sister of STRIKEFORCE veteran Rodrigo Damm. The Brazilian media refers to Damm as “Barbie Girl,” but she’s no doll in the ring. A master at submission wrestling and striking, she needed only 11 seconds to obliterate Lashonda Knos with a knee in 2008, one month after she submitted Sophie Bagherdai with an armbar submission.

Miesha “Takedown” Tate, Carina “Beauty But the Beast,” Damm, Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano and Maiju Kujala will compete in the single-elimination tournament that will be completed over the course of the evening.

Also in the tournament is the Japanese Akano, a tough, former champion in Japan’s Smackgirl promotion. Akano is coming off an impressive effort against STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Champion, Cris Cyborg, also the No. 1 female fighter in the world.

The tournament draw will be determined at the official fighter weigh-in, which will be open to the public, free of charge at Dodge Theatre at 5 p.m. on Thursday,

The historic card also features the debut of Ryan Couture, son of MMA legend Randy "The Natural" Couture. The 27-year-old Couture will face local fighter Lucas Stark of Chandler, Ariz. in a threeround lightweight bout. If Ryan Couture is anything like his father, his pro debut is sure to be full of thrills. As an amateur he compiled a 5-1-1 record, with all of his wins by submission. He began MMA training in 2006, specializes in Muay Thai and submission wrestling. The event will be televised on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET (delayed on the west coast) on Aug. 13.

Tour Hits Phoenix August 30, 2010 at Cricket Wireless Pavilion After wrapping up a sold-out stadium tour of Europe, multi-platinum rock band Green Day will hit the road for a series of North American tour dates, including an August 30th stopover here in Phoenix at Cricket Wireless Pavilion. This is the second leg of the band’s U.S. tour in support of their Grammy Award winning album 21st Century Breakdown. Critics raved about the first leg of the 21st Century Breakdown tour, which launched in North America in July of 2009, before continuing on to Europe in the fall. “As if releasing a wave of energy that had been building up during their four-year hiatus from touring, Green Day poured all their heart and soul into a powerhouse two-hour set,” said Rolling Stone , while Spin noted that “the band’s relationship

with its audience is disarmingly real, a cross-generational give-and-take that’s as punk as any Gilman Street scroungers today.” Released by Reprise Records on May 15th, 2009, 21st Century Breakdown debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, as well as on the Rock, Active Rock, and Alternative charts. The album has spawned two hit singles, “Know Your Enemy,” which has been certified gold, and the platinum-selling “21 Guns,” whose video won three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, including “Best Rock Video.” The band took home their second American Music Award for “Favorite Alternative Music Artist” in November. Green Day Rock Band has been nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Best Video Game.

Tone Def By Kevin Wierzbicki

Flynnville Train Redemption Next Evolution Are you ready for a new band that picks up where Lynyrd Skynyrd left off? One look at the long-haired dudes in Flynnville Train and you might think that’s what you’re getting. These guys are nowhere near as rowdy as Skynyrd was but they are one of the best bands building on the mighty southern rock/country rock mantle. Fans of contemporary country will hear familiar sounds right off the bat as Redemption opens with a “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” vibe with “Home” before moving into a Marshall Tucker

Band/Montgomery Gentry mash-up for “Preachin’ to the Choir.” “Alright” sounds a lot like “Keep Your Hands to Yourself,” the one hit from the Georgia Satellites---no wonder since head sputnik Dan Baird wrote the song and guests on the cut too. The beer-drinking anthem “Tip a Can” is probably the best overall song on Redemption; all four band members had a hand in writing the frothy Dwight Yoakamstyle sing-along.

Reggae Gold 2010 VP If it’s been awhile since you’ve added any new reggae music to your collection here’s a chance to get yourself feelin’ irie in no time. VP Records pretty much has a lock on “happening” reggae and dancehall artists. This various artist’s compilation presents current hits from hot acts like Gyptian, Busy Signal, Ding Dong, Etana and Vybz Kartel. Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley checks in with “As We Enter,” his collaboration with Nas, while Shaggy contributes “Never Let Me Go” and Sean Paul brings the original version of his “Hold My

Hand.” Konshens, Beres Hammond and Michael Franti & Spearhead are some of the other artists representing and there’s even a second disc featuring a mix by Jamaican deejay ZJ Chrome included. So everything you need is here except the cold Red Stripe.

But if that doesn’t work, go for the gusto and use a skewer or ice pick to simply poke a hole through its length. Most often, this is quite the simple cure. Word of warning though dear: Be sure to do so before you light it. And always be very careful. Then Whaa La! Kick back. Relax and enjoy!

Shortly before the French Revolution at the end of the 1700s, Marie Antoinette set a fashion for hair that reached unheard-of levels of height and decoration, with one hairstyle including a replica of a famous French battle frigate. Moving from the vertical to the horizontal, pop star Lady Gaga appeared in Las Vegas earlier this year wearing a huge sun hat reportedly made of her own hair. Somewhere beyond both of these lies the Oxygen competitive reality series “Hair Battle Spectacular, premiering Tuesday, Aug. 10. Actress Brooke Burns is host of the show, which puts 10 hairstylists together in a house and then challenges them to create the biggest and most outrageous hair designs they can imagine. Those are then presented in fully produced, dramatic performances for the judges – designer Derek J, celebrity stylist Lindsay Albanese and a rotating guest judge – who will ultimately decide which stylist walks away with coiffure bragging rights and $100,000.

ALL MY CHILDREN Angie told Jesse about her vision problem and her pregnancy and vowed to keep working. Annie told JR her divorce from Adam was necessary and she was looking forward to marrying Scott. Marissa accepted a job offer from Caleb. AS THE WORLD TURNS Holden and Lily’s flight home from France was rerouted to Canada. When they finally made it home, Molly had called off the wedding. Reid suggested he and Luke take the bridal suite Holden and Molly wouldn’t be using. Craig accused Lucinda of orchestrating the perfume factory conspiracy. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Brooke suspected that Stephanie was pretending to be unconscious from her fall. Stephanie regained consciousness and called 911, telling them she’d been attacked by Brooke. While in the hospital, she gave Ridge a list of reasons he should leave Brooke, and he set his mother straight on the subject. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Hope lured Bo to the house and tried to stab him. He stopped her, then was heartbroken to realize that her behavior is a side effect of the sleeping pills but also a reaction to his betrayal. He videotaped her confession to the muggings and his attempted murder. GENERAL HOSPITAL Johnny pressed Claire to prosecute Sonny now that she had physical proof of his crimes. Still dangling the pregnancy option, Claire offered Sonny a way out. Franco settled his mother and baby Aiden in Oregon and began work on a new masterpiece. Robin discovered photos of her and Patrick defaced in her locker. ONE LIFE TO LIVE Eli forced Hannah to swallow a bottle of pills and left her to die. Jack and Kelly tried to talk Blair out of marrying Eli; Kelly told Blair she thought Eli was a murderer, but Blair thought she was just jealous. Cole rescued Hannah and was told she would live because he found her in time. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS At the cabin, Sharon pleaded with Adam to live as Nick arrived and was shocked by what he saw. At the hospital, Skye confronted Sharon about the shooting. The ranger accused Sharon of trying to kill Adam, and Nick told her not to take the bait.
