His work bridged the late 19th century Impressionism to the early 20th century and profoundly affected the development of modern art. He is known for his advent of Cubism - multiple views of the same subject. Like many great artists, his talent was not recognized until after his death in 190. In 1907 Paris hosted a large scale exhibit of his paintings in a museum-like retrospective. This is the first exhibition to examine Cezanne’s influence upon the development of American modernism in this country and abroad. Cezanne and American Modernism includes an intimate display of a dozen key paintings and works on paper by Cezanne.

Stan Robinson: While in film school in the 70’s, we as students were aware of the ‘Underground’ film communities throughout major cities in the US. ‘Gone With the Pope’ gives a reflection of one of the LA/Las Vegas - West Coast underground filmmakers. The term ‘underground’ is the true use of the term ‘independent film’, made with private money and outside of the studio system, which means, no censors or ‘suits’ to dictate content!

was an issue. Mitchell started shooting in 1975 and with his death in 1981, the movie was ‘in the can’ as we filmmakers call it, filmed but not yet edited, and there it stayed. Oscar® Winner Bob Murawski, Best Film Editing for ‘The Hurt Locker’ (2010), spent the last 15 years in his spare time editing ‘Gone With the Pope’ in between assignments on the movies ‘Spiderman 1, 2, and 3’, ‘Drag Me to Hell’, and ‘The Hurt Locker’. If you have any sensitivities on race, religion, politics, or sexuality, ‘Gone With the Pope’ just could be that ‘magic tonic’ to help one ‘get over them’! Randy Montgomery: The new film Gone With the Pope really isn’t a new release at all. In fact, it’s over thirty years old. While I personally have noticed more grey hair, a few extra pounds and a wardrobe change over my three decades on this planet, real changes have come in society and landscape, which can be evidenced in this late 1970’s exploitation flick. The plot; a mobster and his cronies

kidnap the pope. Yeah, yeah… no one cares. The real attraction to this film is the comedy (which comes at the expense of nearly every race, sex and size of people) and the surprisingly thought-provoking message about life and religion. You will be utterly shocked by the racist nature of some scenes, but today, one can laugh it off as a time gone by. What will stick in your memory though is a sequence involving an actress credited only as “Fat Woman.” For sheer entertainment value, this restored and newly released “classic” would get an A. Had it been released decades ago and being reviewed on DVD, it would probably garner a D. Seeing footage from “old Vegas” and freeways that do not exist anymore in Los Angeles is an added bonus. You Must-See These Kisses By Randy Montgomery At first glance, the Irish film Kisses feels as if it could use a bit more in the way of the plot department. But, once you get sucked in by the performances of the film’s two young stars, you realize that an intricate storyline isn’t important. The movie is about the abuse the two children endure and why they decided to run away and spend the night on the streets of Dublin. When each of their trouble home lives come to a boiling point, Kylie and Dylan (Kelly O’Neil and Shane Curry), who are both friends and neighbors, decide to flee. We see some the abuse the duo endure leading up to their adventure and learn more about them as the evening progresses. Neither one of these protagonists had any other feature length acting credits prior to this, yet their performances are nothing short of amazing. Their genuine emotion, combined with a surprisingly fitting Bob Dylan soundtrack and black and white photography makes Kisses a deeply moving, likable independent gem that will win over, yet break the hearts of all who watch it. “I have nothing to give but kisses.” Wow. What a line. What a film. Grade: A`

You’re going to want to keep some napkins handy, if only to catch your saliva, as you watch season two of “BBQ Pitmasters,� a summertime treat returning Thursday, Aug. 12, on TLC. Unlike season one, which took a documentary look at several different barbecue competitions, these six new episodes make up TLC’s very own competition among 20 cooks from around North America. In each of the first five episodes, four cooks will face off in a series of challenges before one moves on to the final round. BEER! The Best Beers You Can’t Drink (at least not in Arizona)

Being a big time beer journalist has its perks. Breweries from all over the world are constantly sending packages to the AZ Weekly offices in the hope that after trying them, I will write about them in an article, thereby ensuring immeasurable success for their product. The only problem is, I never seem to get these beers. I am pretty certain that the guys in the DINE! section, or maybe the folks over at MILL! are the ones taking them. It has got to be the DINE! guys… they know how good beer and good food go together. I don’t think it’s the publisher, he seems like a nice guy and he would at least offer to share the beer. Regardless, there seems to be a lot of beer that I thought I was getting that I don’t get. I guess that’s true for all of you as well. With all the amazing beers available in Arizona, there are still some that everybody seems to want and we just don’t get to drink. One of the most requested beers is Yuengling. This Pottsville, Pennsylvania brewery bills itself as America’s Oldest Brewery, and given its continu-

ous operation since 1829, they seem to be correct. Their flagship beer is Yuengling Traditional Lager which has a subtle malt sweetness with a hint of hops. It is so well known in the Philadelphia area, most people simply order a lager and receive it. While not a craft brewery (it is one of the five largest breweries in the country), craft enthusiasts do enjoy their beers, and for many area natives who have moved away, it is the first beer they look for upon a return visit. They also can be credited for the first bottled Black and Tan in 1986. The other beers that we don’t currently

get here are definitely in the craft category. Russian River is at the top of that list. Located in Santa Rosa, California, this brewery runs parallel paths, producing some incredible IPAs as well as some of the best Belgian style beers around. Pliny the Elder,

Many East Coast craft beers don’t make it to Arizona due to the distance and expense involved in shipping. Two that Arizonans have been patiently waiting for are Brooklyn Brewing and Victory. Brooklyn Brewing, located appropriately enough in Brooklyn, is known for making uncommonly good food beers and Brewmaster Garrett Oliver is considered by most to be the foremost authority on food and beer pairing in the country. His beer dinners are legendary and accomplished chefs defer to his expertise when planning menus for these events. Lately the series of big bottle beers including Local One and Local Two, as well as Black Ops, have been exciting our fellow beer drinkers in the east. Victory Brewing is located in Downingtown, PA and produces one of the best American made Pilsners in the Prima Pils, they also make Hop Devil IPA as well as the very dangerous Golden Monkey Belgian Triple. At 8% alcohol by volume and incredibly smooth, Golden Monkey can sneak up on you. New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin produces some very sought after beers. Their line at the Great American Beer Festival is always one of the longest. Despite being distributed exclusively in their home state, they are still one of the twenty largest craft breweries in the country. Spotted Cow, a farmhouse style ale, Wisconsin Belgian Red, Raspberry Tart and their Unplugged series are particularly large

selling products for them. No craft beer lover can go to Wisconsin without bringing back some New Glarus. Boulevard Brewing, from Kansas City is also a high demand beer. Bully Porter and the Smokestack series are just a few of the beers they make that are asked for regularly. If you head west, past California to Hawaii, and the island of Maui, you will find Maui Brewing. This brewery has rapidly become one of the most sought after breweries everywhere. Besides making great beer, an appearance on the Thirsty Traveler television show didn’t hurt. Their original plan was to expand to Southern California and then stretch east from there. One problem‌their beer has exploded in California and demand in that state has taken up all the production that doesn’t stay in Hawaii. They are undergoing their third expansion in just a few years, so hopefully someday we will be able to enjoy the Bikini Blonde, Big Swell IPA and the much desired Coconut Porter. If you attend GABF in Denver this year, look for Black Pearl which is the porter aged in rum barrels. This is just a small sampling of some of the great beers out there that we don’t see in Arizona yet. There is Harpoon, Founders, Sweetwater, Cigar City, Captain Lawrence, Southern Tier and many more. Two things to remember‌ after a long wait Arizona is now able to drink Bell’s Beers from Michigan, and we get Oberon year round where other states only get it in the summer;

Tour Hits Phoenix August 30, 2010 at Cricket Wireless Pavilion After wrapping up a sold-out stadium tour of Europe, multi-platinum rock band Green Day will hit the road for a series of North American tour dates, including an August 30th stopover here in Phoenix at Cricket Wireless Pavilion. This is the second leg of the band’s U.S. tour in support of their Grammy Award winning album 21st Century Breakdown. Critics raved about the first leg of the 21st Century Breakdown tour, which launched in North America in July of 2009, before continuing on to Europe in the fall. “As if releasing a wave of energy that had been building up during their four-year hiatus from touring, Green Day poured all their heart and soul into a powerhouse two-hour set,” said Rolling Stone , while Spin noted that “the band’s relationship

with its audience is disarmingly real, a cross-generational give-and-take that’s as punk as any Gilman Street scroungers today.” Released by Reprise Records on May 15th, 2009, 21st Century Breakdown debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, as well as on the Rock, Active Rock, and Alternative charts. Flynnville Train Redemption Next Evolution Are you ready for a new band that picks up where Lynyrd Skynyrd left off? One look at the long-haired dudes in Flynnville Train and you might think that’s what you’re getting. These guys are nowhere near as rowdy as Skynyrd was but they are one of the best bands building on the mighty southern rock/country rock mantle. Fans of contemporary country will hear familiar sounds right off the bat as Redemption opens with a “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” vibe with “Home” before moving into a Marshall Tucker

Band/Montgomery Gentry mash-up for “Preachin’ to the Choir.” “Alright” sounds a lot like “Keep Your Hands to Yourself,” the one hit from the Georgia Satellites---no wonder since head sputnik Dan Baird wrote the song and guests on the cut too. The beer-drinking anthem “Tip a Can” is probably the best overall song on Redemption; all four band members had a hand in writing the frothy Dwight Yoakamstyle sing-along.

Reggae Gold 2010 VP If it’s been awhile since you’ve added any new reggae music to your collection here’s a chance to get yourself feelin’ irie in no time. VP Records pretty much has a lock on “happening” reggae and dancehall artists. This various artist’s compilation presents current hits from hot acts like Gyptian, Busy Signal, Ding Dong, Etana and Vybz Kartel. Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley checks in with “As We Enter,” his collaboration with Nas, while Shaggy contributes “Never Let Me Go” and Sean Paul brings the original version of his “Hold My

Hand.” Konshens, Beres Hammond and Michael Franti & Spearhead are some of the other artists representing and there’s even a second disc featuring a mix by Jamaican deejay ZJ Chrome included. So everything you need is here except the cold Red Stripe.

The artist running the shop include Mike Solo, Evil Dave, Wyatt, Anthony, and Sean. These multi-faceted artists create custom works ranging from bold, traditional tattoos to bio mechanical to macabre black and grey work. When walking into the studio you are overwhelmed with the art displayed on the walls throughout which the artists themselves create when thay are not busy tattooing. On Thursday August 12 the artists at Incision are inviting all to join as they celebrate the 2nd Annual Art Show. It will include over 50 artists. The show begins at 8pm

Somewhere beyond both of these lies the Oxygen competitive reality series “Hair Battle Spectacular,� premiering Tuesday, Aug. 10. Actress Brooke Burns is host of the show, which puts 10 hairstylists together in a house and then challenges them to create the biggest and most outrageous hair designs they can imagine. Those are then presented in fully produced, dramatic performances for the judges – designer Derek J, celebrity stylist Lindsay Albanese and a rotating guest judge – who will ultimately decide which stylist walks away with coiffure bragging rights and $100,000.
