Equally unique are the Torrey pine needle baskets woven by Kraynek and Prince. After gathering and staining, dying, or painting the needles, they then use a coiling technique adapted from one used by Native Americans of the Southwest to create textured vessels with abstract patterns.

Nick@ Night By Nick Connell CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, Mesa The ladies of Lutheran Minnesota just came out of the kitchen this weekend at the Broadway Palm as The Church Basement Ladies opened to an adoring and cheerful audience. Now this is a period piece-1960’s to be exact-where women ruled the roost and the kitchen in small towns all over Minnesota. But these weren’t ordinary ladies-these were traditional Norwegian salt of the earth pickles-beets and cookies kind of gals-who never took themselves too seriously. And that’s where the fun begins in the musical comedy meant to have some laughs over the joy of butter and Lutefish in the pantry. That’s Uff Da! Led by the boss, Vivian, played to perfection by alpha female Kay Francis, these ladies cooked up a storm all night reminding us that the church basement is really ‘Closer to Heaven”. But Vivian needed help to get through the death of old Willie, the church servant. She gets her wish as the good Pastor Gunderson, played gently by Edwin Hanson, provides with a sweet rendition of “Song for Willie”. There are plenty of laughs with this quartet of voices including Jessica Unice as Karin Engleson, Kelly Karcher as her daughter Signe, and the wild and unpredictable Mavis, played by the funny and spontaneous Angela Dirksen. The ladies romped and rolled through “Get Down to Business”, “The Hawaiian Easter Holiday Getaway Furnace Fundraiser Song”, “The Cities”, “This is Most Certainly True”, “Sing a New Song” and “For Good”. These Ladies were a hoot to watch and worth a walk down memory lane to a more innocent and kinder time. Tickets 480-325-6700 or BroadwayPalmWest.com NOISES OFF at The Phx Theatre, in Downtown Phoenix. “And God said it was terrible”.-Lloyd, Noises Off. Nothing On and Noises Off? Sounds intriguing? Sounds sexy? How about some sardines thrown in for good measure? Maybe some cross dressing and perfect truth? Still following the story…if it’s a farce loaded with slamming doors, dim witted actors, partially clothed men-sexy women, gullible victims, identity confusion and plenty of sardines again-then you’ll love this curtain raiser. Relax if you will, pull up a chair, a bottle, a newspaper, a phone and enjoy a wild ride with Phoenix Theatre’s 90th anniversary season opener, Noises Off. This is a true English farce meant to lighten the spirits during uncertain times-and lighten it does! With a local cast meant to charm the dickens out of old age pensioners, this farce within a farce, gives enough laughs and moments to earn a trip to old merry London! Kudos to Leann Dearing(hot Brooke), Cathy Dresbach(old Clackett herself), Robert Kolby Harper(our dearest director Lloyd), Joseph Kramer(Freddie the frump), Mike Lawler(Selsdon the magnificent),Maren Maclean(Belinda the bird), Andi Watson,(positive Poppy), Christopher Williams(Garry the madman), and Luke Young as (Tim terrific)-for pulling off such a funny and dynamic play within a play. Just remember to stay for the second act, or you’ll miss the best part-the behind the scenes drama and laughter meant to die for! Tickets 602-258-1974 or PhoenixTheatre. com

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Although his character had been written out due to failed deal negotiations, Dustin Hoffman will reprise his role of Bernie Focker in “Little Fockers,” after all. Hoffman this month is expected to shoot a few scenes with Barbara Streisand and a large scene near the end of the film featuring all of the main characters. Dimension Films is developing a sequel to this summer’s “Piranha 3D,” in spite of the movie earning a mere $10 million in sixth-place during opening weekend. Made for an economical $24 million, the horror flick garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics across the country. Jessica Alba has been cast as a retired spy turned housewife who has been reactivated in Robert Rodriguez’s “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World.” Franchise regulars Antonio Banderas, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara will also be back, albeit in cameo form.

The largest movie theater in the world, Radio City Music Hall in New York, opened in 1932 – it seats almost 6,000 people!

Be among the first to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com/ Phoenix.

The following is a collection of quotes pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com/ Phoenix): “This is an extremely difficult film to watch, primarily because it grabs a hold of you and then tightens its grip with each passing moment. And, as hard as we may try to pull away from it in order to preserve our own safety, ‘Animal Kingdom’ constricts its claws until it is through showing us who is king.” Grade: B Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “From its slow and deliberate start to the last climatic moment, ‘Animal Kingdom’ delivers a frighteningly haunting portrait of ‘matriarch family control’, at any cost. A first rate psychological thriller!” Grade: B+ Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “‘Animal Kingdom’ is one of the best movies of the year featuring an amazingly talented cast that delivers an emotionally charged and at-times edge of your seat family drama/thriller. Oscar nods should be plentiful for this top-notch Australian flick that keeps you wondering exactly what’s going to happen next through most of the picture.” Grade: A+

Reviewers’ Roundup: ‘Animal Kingdom’ In Australian director David Michod’s “Animal Kingdom,” Luke Ford plays

September 2nd, 2010 - September 8th, 2010

There’s ‘date movies’, those films that deal with the aspects of male-female interaction from either perspective, with focus on coming together as a couple. ‘Going the Distance’ presents the basics of those same elements, in an ‘adult’ fashion, which is quite refreshing!

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The base story: a woman (Drew Barrymore) from Los Angeles, while on an internship in New York, meets a guy (Justin Long). What starts as a likable convenient relationship of addressing the normal physicality of the human species, discover they truly like each other. Having to return to LA after the internship, they decide that ‘Going the Distance’ is worth the effort as they deal with the familiar situation of distant relationships. What gives this movie a true sense of life, it’s like 3 short films woven together for one story. There’s ‘their story’ when they are together, his story when he’s interacting with his two closest male friends, and her story with her older sister and her best friend. We get the ‘uncensored’ conversations with each group, as aspect of sexuality, physical desires & needs, and careers are bantered about in each of their lives! 4 of 5 stars Starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Christina Applegate, Ron Livingston, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Jim Gaffigan, and Natalie Morales. Directed by Nanette Burstein; written by Geoff LaTulippe. Warner Bros. Pictures release. Rated R for sexual content including dialogue, language throughout, some drug use and brief nudity.

As any of those of us who are veterans know (and yes, I’m a Viet-Nam veteran) ‘friendly fire’ casualties are a fact of war. The handling of Pat Tillman’s death and the aftermath as items were brought to light, with the conjecture that the military used his death for a propaganda

‘The American’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “The American,” adapted from Martin Booth’s 1990 novel “A Very Private Gentleman,” George Clooney plays an assassin named Jack who, after completing a harsh job in Sweden, retreats to a small medieval town in the Italian countryside. While there, Jack takes on an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact, accepts the friendship of a local priest and pursues a torrid liaison with a beautiful woman. Joseph J. Airdo’s review of “The American” is available exclusively online at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

‘Machete’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “Machete,” Danny Trejo stars as a Mexican Federale who, after being nearly killed during a violent fight with a powerful drug-lord (Steven Seagal) and double-crossed by a local businessman (Jeff Fahey) in cahoots with a corrupt senator (Robert De Niro), sets out to take revenge on his enemies. Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis’s “Machete” is the first of the faux-trailers featured in 2007’s

This campy B-movie played for a short run at one of Los Angeles premier art houses, the Laemmle Sunset 5 in West Hollywood in 2003. Since then, the movie has screened monthly for devoted fans who love the extremely bad acting, awful dialogue and thin script. Moviegoers dress up in costume, recite lines and act out scenes from The Room in the theatre.

“Grindhouse” to receive a featurelength treatment. Jason Eisener’s “Hobo with a Shotgun” is currently in post-production while Eli Roth plans to “bang out the script” for holiday-themed slasher flick “Thanksgiving” later this month. Joseph J. Airdo’s review of “Machete” will be available Monday exclusively online at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

The Room… A Horribly Bad “Good” Time By Randy Montgomery The Room is officially described as an “American black comedy about love, passion, betrayal and lies” and stars producer/writer/director Tommy Wiseau as Johnny, a successful San Francisco banker who is madly in love with Lisa (Juliette Danielle). Despite the appearance of loving Johnny, Lisa is bored with and has taken an emotional and physical interest in his best friend (Greg Sestero). Thrown into the mix is an orphan teenager who lives nearby who would rather watch the couple make love then go home.

If you’re in the mood for a horribly bad time (that’s part of The Room’s appeal), then research your characters; grab some plastic spoons and head on down to MADCAP Theatres in Tempe. \Wonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in September 2010? “MACGRUBER” What works as a “Saturday Night Live” skit isn’t always as effective when blown up to feature-film length, as proved again by this spinoff of the sketches that parody the troubleshooting television character MacGyver. Will Forte – also the picture’s co-writer – plays the hero whose lady love (fellow “SNL”-er Kristen Wiig) becomes a pawn of the master villain (Val Kilmer) being pursued by MacGruber. Ryan Phillippe, Powers Boothe and Maya Rudolph also star. ›› (R and unrated versions: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Bluray)

“KILLERS” Love isn’t easy for a covert spy and the woman who enters his life (Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl) in this espionage satire that isn’t quite as funny as it wants to be. The couple’s marital bliss ends when they become targets of unknown assassins, forcing the young husband to reveal the full extent of his secret life; Tom Selleck (soon to be back on the right side of the law in the CBS series “Blue Bloods”), Catherine O’Hara and Martin Mull co-star. ›› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“SOLITARY MAN” Michael Douglas has engaged in a number of image-busting roles in recent years, and though this movie didn’t get remotely as much attention as some of his others, it offers him as another such character. He plays a businessman whose tendency to play fast and loose is impacting him both personally and professionally, something he realizes acutely when he takes a younger man (Jesse Eisenberg, “Zombieland”) under his wing. The noteworthy cast also includes Susan Sarandon, longtime Douglas pal Danny DeVito, Mary-Louise Parker (“Weeds”), Jenna Fischer (“The Office”), Richard Schiff (“The West Wing”) and Anastasia Griffith (“Damages”). ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray) “THE OFFICE: SEASON SIX” Milestones abound for the characters, particularly Jim and Pam (John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer), in this round of the NBC comedy series. They get married – finally! – and also welcome a bundle of joy, with Jim getting a promotion as well that makes him Michael’s (Steve Carell) equal. Michael gets a new love interest, but before long, a secret appears to doom the relationship. Guest stars include Oscar winner Kathy Bates as the chief of a company that buys Dunder Mifflin. ››› (Not rated: A, P) (Also on Blu-ray) “SMALLVILLE: THE COMPLETE NINTH SEASON” It’s a given that there will be only one more set to buy after this one to have the complete series, since the CW adventure’s final year is about to begin. Clark Kent’s (Tom Welling) relationship with Lois Lane (Erica Durance) deepens, though each feels tentative about acting on their growing feelings. Meanwhile, there are villains to deal with, not to mention such questionable allies as the Green Arrow (Justin Hartley). Allison Mack continues as Chloe Sullivan. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

Yet on Saturday, Sept. 11, the 24th season of “America’s Most Wanted: America Fights Back” premieres on Fox with Walsh at the helm. “I am the host of the show and the executive producer and all those labels that we put on people in show business,” he says. “It’s way more than a job. It’s a great job, a well-paying job, a hard job. For me it’s a passion, maybe to channel my frustration and heartbreak over the years, and try to direct it to getting justice for other crime victims.” In 1981, his son, Adam, then 6, was kidnapped and decapitated. Walsh and his wife, Reve, later founded the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He continues to fight for legislation to protect victims from predators, and “AMW” continues to help nab those predators. At this writing, the show had helped capture 1,125 criminals, “the worst of the worst,” Walsh says. “We caught more guys in the last year than in the (first) 23, and three weeks ago, we caught five guys in one week.” He’s consulted with five presidents and continues to pursue the truly evil. Given that new episodes return on this ominous anniversary, Walsh plans to devote some of the show to tracking terrorists. He was at Ground Zero while the rubble from the towers still burned. “This is an old show, 23 years on prime time,” Walsh says. “It’s mind-boggling, and the public is the reason. Our viewers are now worldwide. We have caught 30 guys off the Web alone.” For those who want to call in but fear calls will be traced, or fear retribution, Walsh promises anonymity. “You just tell me where that creep is – we have had amazing success because people want to do the right thing.”

On Saturday, Sept. 11, Fox’s venerable police documentary series “Cops” launches its 23rd season with its 800th episode. But there are still places where executive producer John Langley’s camera crews are not welcome to shoot police activity. “Chicago,” Langley says, “and Honolulu. In the case of Honolulu, I think it’s because the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau is very strong, and they’re afraid that it will somehow suggest to tourists that there is crime in Hawaii. God forbid that notion, right?” Asked if the bureau is aware that CBS’ reimagined version of the pistol-packing crime drama “Hawaii 5-0” is shooting in the Aloha State right now, Langley says, “Fictional crime is OK, but if it’s real crime ... there’s a tendency amongst some city fathers to avoid the topic. They want to pretend that it doesn’t exist.” One could understand sunny Honolulu’s reluctance to show its dark underbelly to surfers and beach bunnies, but when asked what rough-and-tumble Chicago’s excuse is, Langley says, “I don’t know. It’s an entrenched bureaucracy. I think everything depends on what the mayor wants, and maybe the mayor doesn’t want us there.”

Have you been to the garden? by Chef Rachel Albert Desert Botanical Garden (DBG for short), founded in 1937 by Gertrude Webster, a wealthy society woman in the valley who wanted to preserve the land from citrus growers, is one of Phoenix’s oldest cultural institutions. Of the 140 acres purchased, only about 50 have been developed for visitors. DBG opened to the public in 1939 and has been open continuously with the exception of about five years during

plant and animal life of Sonoran Desert, desert decorative and edible landscaping and gardening, composting and conservation, food dehydrating, canning, and cooking with everything from chilies and chocolate to citrus fruits and dates, and from preparing pomegranates to making mole and holiday tamales. Enroll yourself or your children in classes on sketching, photography, birding, living green, astronomy in the garden, paleontology, tai chi and more. Located at 1201 N. Galvin Parkway in Phoenix, the garden is open seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm. For a list of upcoming events, visit them on line at www.dbg.org or call 480-4818164 to request a catalog.

Its name comes from a Lewis Caroll poem, “The Hunting of the Snark.” Not just for sightseeing, DBG offers educational classes, exhibits, unique outdoor trips, camps, and resources for children, adults and teachers. The word “breakfast” literally means to break fast. As we know, fasting is the act of not eating over a period of time. We may not think of it this way, but we virtually fast while we sleep -- even if we dream about food. The act of eating breakfast is literally breaking the fast!

BEER! SECTION

BEER! The fall event season is getting underway, and while there are plenty of them out there, there are a couple of them that really caught my eye. Both of them are a little more on the upscale end than the typical beer event and both involve good food and both support incredibly good causes. So let’s take a look at them and see what they are about. The J.W. Marriott at Desert Ridge is the new home to the Phoenix Cooks event. This is one for all you foodies out there. Not too many events can bring together the likes of Matt Carter, Chuck Wiley, Beau MacMillian, Payton Curry and at least 35 other top chefs in the Valley. This is going to be an afternoon to remember. Gordon Ramsey wouldn’t be able to take anybody’s jacket in this group. Phoenix Cooks is not your typical go from booth to booth and try some food and

24

then do it again kind of deal. This is a full on, day of learning and experiencing the art of food like no other. Attend short classes on seafood, chicken, burger, Philly cheesesteaks (I will be keeping an eye on that one; the first rule of Philly cheesesteaks is, if they call it a Philly cheesesteak, it probably ain’t…but that’s some other column) and an “Ode to the Tomato.” Great sounding stuff, right? But where’s the beer? Glad you asked. Alaskan Brewing, as the sole beer sponsor has brought in Monique de la Torre to teach two of these classes. The first is on Alaskan Amber Salmon…what better dish to learn about the wonders of beer and food than Alaskan Amber with salmon? The other great part of this class is the opportunity to taste and learn about many of Alaskan’s fine line up of beers. The other class Monique is teaching is on the Art of Beer and Dessert (that’s right, two “s”s…the stuff you eat, not where we live). Learn how to make an amazing Smoked Porter Apple Crisp using Alaskan Brewing Smoked Porter beer. And of course while you’re still licking your fingers, learn more about the Alaskan Brewing beers. Anything that involves food and beer is okay in my book. Continued on Page 25...

Unable to smoothly segue back to the Phoenix Cooks event, we’ll just jump right in to it. Besides all the classes, there will be a Taste of Desert Ridge, where the chefs of the JW Marriott will open their kitchens and sample specially prepared dishes. Also, the Flavors of the World Reception on Friday night will be an amazing event held out on the patio of Meritage Steakhouse will offer a variety of incredible foods done in styles from all over the world. For more details, check out www.phoenixcooks.com The second event that catches my eye is The Off-Centered Experience on October 2nd at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort. This event, put on by the Beer For Brains Foundation looks to be an opportunity to try some very special and rare (at least to Arizona) beers. Offerings from Founders Brewing, Three Floyds, NOLA and others not currently available in the state will be there along with some other very special beers from brewers regu-

larly available. SanTan Brewing has promised something special….dare we hope for some of their very limited Count Hopula? We have also heard that Tomme Arthur is digging through his cellar and may be sending as many as three different kegs of beers never served before in Arizona. Sam Calagione at Dogfish Head, as honorary chairman, is leading the pack. Sam is sending a variety of great beers, including some specialty product as well as some special aged kegs, right out of his personal collection. Besides all this great beer, a midAtlantic style feast will be going on. Look for Maryland style crab cakes, Delaware steamed shrimp, Philly cheesesteaks (I know what I said earlier, but this one might be the exception), soft pretzels, boardwalk fries, and the ever popular funnel cake. With all this great food and beer, what more do you need? How about great music…look for local favorites La La Lush, Gooder and the Bad Cactus Band to be providing the sounds throughout the evening. If you haven’t heard these bands, you will be impressed. Bad Cactus has been described as a “New Orleans Jazz Funeral, without the body”, La La Lush recently finished third in a major Phoenix talent competition, and Gooder…well they just are gooder than anyone else doing their style of music locally. What else makes this great? The Beer For Brains Foundation is set up to bring awareness, compassion, hope, research and, someday, a cure to those afflicted with brain cancer. The unique name of the organization comes from the generous support the organization receives from the craft beer community in its efforts. All of their events have some sort of Continued on Page 26...

We have mentioned in this column many times the wonder that is food and beer pairing. Not too many breweries do it better than Alaskan. Starting 25 years ago when Geoff and Marcy Larson opened the Juneau based brewery, right up to today, Alaskan has a heritage steeped in great beer and food. Basing their beers on recipes from the Douglas Brewing Company (circa 1899), the small brewery learned how great these old beer recipes went with the food found in Alaska. Whether it was Salmon, King Crab, or even Moose, these beers went great with food. It didn’t take Marcy and Geoff long to embrace the concept of food and beer, and start talking about it. Today the Alaskan website (www.alaskanbeer. com) has hundreds of recipes showing how to cook with beer.

5444 E. Washington Phoenix This longtime bar derives its name from the old lottery process of obtaining a liquor license. With a recent change of ownership, the new owner combines his experience both as a previous rugby player and as a restauranteur. We can definitely expect great things out of the kitchen. One of the first changes made was to focus on offering a wide selection of craft beer. For example, six of Draw 10’s draft handles are dedicated to local breweries such as SanTan, SunUp, Papago, Grand Canyon, Four Peaks and Sonoran. Their selection also includes a large number of bottled and canned beers. As for the menu at Draw 10, it continues to evolve. Currently comprised of both red and green chili, burgers, sandwiches and such. One thing I definitely recommend trying is the Mac & Cheese with Green Chili. Hours of operation are 10AM - 2AM seven days a week. Happy Hour 4PM - 7PM Monday thru Friday includes $1 off all craft beers, 32oz domestic beers $5 and $3 well drinks.

“On Tap” at Lone Butte Casino

tas....when we were there, we were fortunate enough to sample the new Hammer and Sickle Vodka.

Balmy and 80 degrees... good food, great craft beers... live music... in the summer? In Arizona? Some people would say “it’s too good to be true”.... and yet, every Friday evening, 8PM til midnight, Lone Butte Casino hosts “On Tap”.

If you don’t have the ability to leave town this weekend, you can at least head down to Lone Butte’s “On Tap”. They offer a spacious, comfortable, misted patio plus great beer at unbelievable prices with good music! We’ll definitely see you there!!! “On Tap” at Lone Butte Casino, 1077 S. Kyrene Rd., in Chandler.

Located in a spacious 4,000 square foot misted patio, Lone Butte seems to have perfected the art of “the outdoor beer garden”. Each month they feature 3 different craft beers. August consisted of Firestone-Walker DBA and Pale 31 as well as the Red Hook Blond Ale. Looking forward, September will feature Kona Long Board Lager, Widmer Hefeweiszen and Jack’s Pumpkin Spice. All are offered, amazingly, at only $2 PER PINT! If you like, order it by the yard. For October, “On Tap” plans to feature the Widmer Oktoberfest, Red Hook ESB and Odell’s Barrel 5 Pale Ale.

STORING CIGARS If different types of cigars are stored together in the same humidor, they may take on each others’ flavors. It can get expensive to purchase humidors for each of your favorite brands/types as well, so make sure your humidor has dividers. If you find that you’ve purchased more cigars than your humidor can handle, store them in your freezer in a plastic bag or container with a lid. Two to three days before the planned smoke move them to your refrigerator’s crisper bin. An additional day in a humidor will be best.

LOCAL BMX STAR HAS ALL EYES ON THE PRIZE

Arizona’s own Blake “B-Money” Foxx began his BMX racing career at the age of 5, quickly progressing from the Novice and Intermediate race classes to the highly-talented Expert class. Throughout his amateur career, he has competed at the local, state,

national and world levels, traveling all across the United States and the globe for his races. As an amateur, he consistently finished in the Top 10 in district, state, and national levels in both the American Bicycle Association (ABA) and National Bicycle League (NBL), the two premier BMX sanctions in the United States. Blake also qualified to be a member of the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 World BMX teams, proudly representing the United States at the UCI BMX World Championships. As a world-class BMX Racer, Mountain Bike racer and Freestyle rider, he without a doubt knows what it takes to be noticed. Always smiling, Blake and his flashy gear and equipment quickly turn heads wherever he goes. And the moment you meet him, you’ll discover a very polite and well-mannered young man. No “At-

titude” or “Star” mentality here, just an all-around great kid with tons of world-class talent. In addition to his hectic race and training schedule, Blake is also a dedicated full-time student at Mesa Community College, studying Graphic Design. He graduated from Desert Ridge High School in Mesa at the age of 16. By the end of his junior year at Desert Ridge H.S., he had enough credits to graduate early. Upon completion of his degree at MCC, he will transfer to ASU to further his education. Blake also works part-time for the family graphic arts business BadAss/Foxx Designs, which does everything from decals to vehicle wraps. To date, the most exciting trip of his career was a race in Tijuan, China to compete in the 2008 World Cham-

As far as racing a bike, watching him ride is best described as watching the flow of water. A true natural, he has a style all his own that is truly awe-inspiring to witness. And win or lose, you would never know. He takes a loss as well as any competitor in professional sports. He knows it’s a competition and all he can do is give it his best effort. As long as he does, he is not disappointed. Of course he doesn’t like to lose, and he doesn’t often, but he knows his fans and younger riders are watching as well as his sponsors and a bad attitude is not the way he wants people to remember him. He loves riding bikes and is excited that he has been able to

pionships. This trip was especially exciting considering 2008 marked the debut of BMX in the Summer Olympics. To begin his 13th year of racing, which is also his favorite number, Blake turned Pro in January, 2010. Since turning Pro, he has had to step up his game to say the least. At 17, Blake is the youngest Pro currently competing on the circuit. He faces stiff competition from the older, more experienced, more aggressive riders, but has managed to step up to the challenge. He is currently in contention for the 2010 ABA Pro Cruiser title, which will be decided in November. Looking forward, qualifications for the 2012 Olympics in London are set to begin in the coming months, and Blake is planning to come on strong.

become a professional doing what he loves. When his time comes to ride, there’s plenty of chatter. “Watch this kid with the long hair, he can ride”, parents often tell their kids, “Pay attention, Blake’s in the gate. You need to watch what he does”. And when the gate drops it’s like poetry in motion. He hits the obstacles with a “Come and get it” attitude, goes through the rhythms with speed and grace, then flies over jumps as if to defy gravity. It’s a beauty to watch to say the least. Kids come up to him afterwards just hoping to have the opportunity to talk with him. He gives them a smile and some words of encouragement, regardless of how his race turned out. Always quick with an autograph or free swag for his fans, FOXXBMX number plates, tote bags, stickers, wrist bands etc., he’s a hit wherever he goes and quickly embraced by all. Blake is considered in the industry as an “Independent” rider, which means he has no major bicycle or any other type company paying his way. He does it all on his own. Although Adidas Eyewear, Profile Racing, R.I.H.P., and BadAss Designs do give him a great amount of gear, Fast Athlete USA pushes his personal training to a top level and Average Joes Bicycles(for BMX) and 2-Wheel Jones (Freestyle and MTB) help him with everything from service to parts, he is still a “Privateer”. Currently seeking a major sponsor endorsement for the 2011 season, he wants nothing more than to travel the world and display his skills. To let the world know that sometimes, the good guy’s dreams do come true. A tremendous role model for our youth, check Blake out on the web at www.FOXXBMX.com and discover one of the fastest growing sports in the world. After all, a local hero is helping pave the way. Labor Day Weekend Take-Over Sept 2nd-Sept 5th There will be plenty of parties to attend for Labor Day weekend, but Eugene Thompson, Doobie Boyz and 2G Productions have teamed together to make a Labor Day party into exactly what is should be, 4 nights long. The idea is this: take all your friends and flow with the crowd to new locations each night. You don’t lose your crowd and everyone knows the destination. Thursday night will kick if off at Dirty Pretty Rockbar, a perfect place to drink down and dance up the night in the dim-lit, loud atmosphere. Friday night heads to Jackrabbit Supperclub and Lounge, known for its live band sets and scantily dressed cabaret dancers. Saturday night happens at PHX Nightclub in downtown Phx with an All White Affair, come earlier for an open bar before 10:30pm. Finally the Sunday night finale hits Hotel Theodore, with an open bar before 11pm, and 2 different rooms and 2 different sounds. For VIP packages and table reservations call 602.373.0600 The 6th Annual Phoenix Cooks Sept 4th Once again it is time for this foodie festival, and really who isn’t a foodie these days? This culinary experience lets you taste the creations from 50 of the valley’s top notch restaurants and chefs. If you have watched Julie and Julia once too many times, then you probably want to take a knack at it yourself. Sign up for the various cooking classes taught through-out the day for an extra $10-$8 with top chefs and teachers. Walk off all the delicacies you have been consuming by browsing through the 33,000sq foot marketplace full of the latest kitchen designs, gadgets, and glassware; then go back for round 2- or is it round 3? In Mexico tequila is drunk straight without salt or lime. It is popular in some regions to drink fine tequila with a side of sangrita – a sweet, sour and spicy drink made from orange juice, grenadine (or tomato juice) and hot chilies. JOE BROOKS LIVE AT THE RHYTHM ROOM September 11th, 2010 at 7pm

Joe Brooks, the self-taught UK singer/ songwriter whose bedroom-recorded songs on MySpace made him a star before a label deal was even considered, is set to release his Lava Records/Universal Republic debut CONSTELLATION ME on all digital platforms September 7th. Armed with both a guitar and brute emotional honesty, Brooks follows in the tradition of Simon & Garfunkel, Damien Rice and James Blunt by melding confessional lyrics with heartfelt, melodic tracks. With an online following in the tens of millions, the singer was the UK’s Number One unsigned MySpace artist for nearly a year, the 23-yearold Brooks has quickly amassed a devoted fan base drawn to his hearton-sleeve, workmanlike style. CONSTELLATION ME, which features current single “Superman,” as well as

future singles “Marching Band” and “World at Our Feet,” is the culmination of a lifetime of self-discipline and innate talent. The charismatic musician began playing his mother’s classical guitar as a child, re-stringing the broken instrument and teaching himself how to play. Later, Brooks began writing his own songs and posting them on MySpace, subsequently becoming the UK’s highest-ranking unsigned artist and garnering over 30,000 plays a days. As a teenager, Brooks declined multiple record deals to focus on growing his music and further nurturing his musical gift.

to Tori Amos to Kid Rock, was instantly impressed with Brooks’ talent. “Even though he’s only 23, Joe Brooks has an old soul in a young body,” said Flom. “His lyrics convey a dual sense of youthful optimism and heartfelt realism that resonate with so many different ages and groups. Joe Brooks is bound for stardom.”

Brooks will be hitting the road in support of CONSTELLATION ME this fall, embarking on his first cross-country tour of the U.S. beginning Sept. 8 in Fullerton, CA, with a stop right here in the valley on September 11 at the Rhythm Room. Be sure to catch this young musical sensation on his fast, unparalleled rise to the top.

CONSTELLATION ME marks the debut collaboration between Universal Republic and Jason Flom’s Lava Records. Flom, a music industry legend who propelled the careers of everyone from Stone Temple Pilots

“Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Enter If You Dare! is now available at all major bookstores or on Amazon.com.” Ripley’s loved the giant rubber-band ball made by Joel Waul so much that it bought it. The problem was getting the giant ball, made from 780,000 rubber bands, to Ripley’s Orlando warehouse for storage. At 9,400 lb and 7 ft tall, the ball is not easy to maneuver and can be dangerous - Ripley’s previously reported that, when the ball was just 400 lbs, it rolled over and sprained Waul’s hand. In October 2009, Ripley’s team arrived at Waul’s Lauderhill, Florida, home with a transporter truck and crane. The ball was carefully hauled up from Waul’s drive (it smells too bad to have been kept in his house) and loaded onto the truck, before making a slow journey to the warehouse. Its permanent home will be the Ripley’s museum in Hollywood, California, which is temporarily without a roof, so that it can be lowered in. It is too big to roll through a door, and only just made it into the warehouse.

Teddy Duncan from ‘Good Luck Charlie’ Most people see this week as the end of summer, but for many female students, it’s the start of fall trends. For those not bound by school uniforms, it’s a fun time, as evidenced by Teddy (Bridgit Mendler) of “Good Luck Charlie,” airing Wednesdays on Disney Channel. In the show, siblings help their parents take care of baby Charlie; one of them is brainy Teddy, whose fashions are within reach of most teens. “Teddy likes to use a lot of bright colors and patterns and to wear furry vests and old silk tops with patterns, and she wears boots a lot,” Mendler says. “She’s a little bit boho, not too boho. There’s still a lot of stuff that’s classically teen.” Costume designer Nicole Gorsuch tries to find clothes most teens could afford. For the new school year, Gorsuch sees the main trends as skinny cargo pants and military jackets, mixing it up with personalized Tshirts and boots. She recommends teens scour thrift stores for accessories. “They’re really great for jewelry, bags, belts and accessories,” Gorsuch says. “Maybe the clothes aren’t always that great, but (for) all the other stuff.”
