ZAZU - Sunday, Sept 19, 3pm Spend Sunday with ZAZU, Sept. 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar for an afternoon of music that CD Baby describes as “…infectiously hard swinging…energetic and exciting… improvised with reckless abandon.” The group’s name comes from the word ‘Zazous’, the young French Bohemians of the 1930s who were huge fans of American singerbandleader Cab Calloway’s scat music. During the German occupation of France from 1940 on, the Zazous frequented places where the hip jazzy gypsy music was played, but always in fear of being arrested and shipped off to camps or jail. So, in tribute to them and the risks they took for the love of this music, the group ZAZU was formed. Kazimierz is a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages, located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale (look for secret entrance). Admission to the public is $10 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply.

One of the most quoted movie lines is ‘You can’t handle the truth!’ Actor Jack Nicholson’s line from the 1992 ‘A Few Good Men’ also starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and Kevin Bacon.

By Joseph J. Airdo An animated film released this summer may have suggested that the world’s favorite ogre is living happily “Forever After” but that does not mean his adventures are over. Shrek will return Oct. 28 for a half-hour Halloween-themed special on NBC titled “Scared Shrekless.” Meanwhile, “Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special” is scheduled to air Nov. 24. In an unprecedented undertaking, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman are adapting Stephen King’s fantasy novel series “The Dark Tower” for both the big and small screens. The story will unfold through a trilogy of major motion pictures for Universal with a two-season NBC television series bridging the gaps in between each installment. Finally, the Arizona Browncoats and the Arizona Corsairs will pair up Sunday, Sept. 19 for the annual Can’t Stop the Serenity charity event at Tempe’s Madcap Theaters. Film screenings include “Serenity,” “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” and “The Ice Pirates.” Visit www.azbrowncoats.org for tickets and additional information. Emma Stone, the star of this weekend’s new comedy “Easy A,” attributes a large part of her Hollywood aspirations to her involvement in Valley Youth Theater. “If I hadn’t been there, I don’t know that I would be aware of what I want to do at such a young age,” she says. “I think it’s an amazing thing to have in the area for kids who want to get into performing. a normal childhood.” Stone’s journey to Hollywood began in Scottsdale. She was born Nov. 6, 1988 to parents Jeff and Krista. The future actress was known as Emily to her family (including younger brother Spencer) and friends at Sequoya Elementary School, where she snagged a fifth-grade spelling bee championship. Stone and her family moved to Paradise Valley when she was 12 years old. She attended sixth-grade at Cocopah Middle School before becoming home-schooled. She then spent a portion of her freshman year at Xavier College Preparatory before moving to Los Angeles to fulfill her Hollywood dreams. “I’m so lucky to come from a place where the mentality is really kind and supportive of local Valley people trying to accomplish things,” Stone adds.

average expectation and find so much more. At the onset, the originality of the opening titles sets the tone and the unexpected comedic ‘over-thetop’ characterizations by the veteran actors along with Emma Stone’s appealing character, is refreshing! In ‘Easy A’, Olive (Emma Stone) is in high school with the reputation of a ‘goody two-shoes’ that would like to be considered as so much more. A rumor through ‘the high-tech world of texting’ gets around to her classmates about losing her virginity. The rumor is untrue, but she decides to take full advantage to enhance her social and economic status among her classmates! Olive is studying and sees her life paralleling Hester Prynne’s in “The Scarlet Letter.” She changes her style of dress, adds the red letter ‘A’ to her wardrobe like the character in the book, and sets in motion, the ‘rumor mill’ at full force!

Review by Stan Robinson

‘Easy A’ presents a fresh look at the trials & tribulations of high school life, along with insight for adults by the veteran actors adding a nice comedic edge to their ‘over-the-top’ performances. Emma Stone carries the movie as she interacts with her classmates, best friend, and ‘playing to the camera’ which is representative of the video journal she’s keeping on her computer while demonstrating her range of ‘stand up’ comedy delivery! 3 of 5 stars

“Peaches Christ…” All About Evil is a Fun Movie! By Randy Montgomery Young Deborah Tennis (Natasha Lyonne) wanted to be a star at The Victoria Theatre, owned by her father. In 1984 she was publically ridiculed on the stage and became an introvert, quietly working the concession stand. Twenty years later, her father has passed and the building may be sold. Deborah knows no other life than running the evening horror flicks and talking to the handful of patrons that attend. When she commits murder in the lobby and the security camera portrays the act on the screen, fans think it’s the movie and scream for more. Deborah becomes an overnight sensation and the theatre is filled to capacity. In order to keep a new short film on screen every week, she searches for victims and the assistance of two psychopathic sisters and a violent criminal. Despite the violence, it is all played

out for us in good fun and is a sheer campy delight. Fans of horror films and midnight movies rejoice – there is a new instant classic. As an added bonus, the “Mistress of the Dark,” Elvira has a role as the mother of Steven (Thomas Dekker), Deborah’s (pronounced Deb-or-uh) number one fan. All About Evil is directed by Joshua Grannell aka “Peaches Christ” the drag-queen/performer known in San Francisco for the Midnight Mass movie series and outlandish stage performances. The movie plays out as an inside joke that fans of the genre will enjoy. The film is being screened as MADCAP Theatres by the Midnite Movie Mamacita, the Valley’s shock and horror queen. Unlike Peaches Christ, our “Mamacita” is a bubbly young (real) woman with a mild demeanor. Let’s just hope she doesn’t have any tricks up her sleeve at the Tempe screenings, which will be hosted by Peaches herself and the legendary Mink Stole. Grade A for sheer fun!

Now Playing! ‘Devil’ A frightening thought… By Stan Robinson From a story by M. Night Shyamalan, who is also one of the movie’s producers, ‘Devil’ gives a look at a group of people trapped in an elevator, who realize that the devil is among them…

‘The Town’ By Stan Robinson Written, directed, and starring Ben Affleck, and based on the book “Thieves” which won the 2005 Hammett Prize for excellence in crime writing; ‘The Town’ is a look at a longtime thief who tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, the FBI agent looking to bring him and his crew down, as he meticulously plans his next heist.

“MODERN FAMILY: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” The most recent winner of the Emmy for outstanding comedy series, this documentary-style ABC sitcom focuses on the familiar-feeling ups and downs of several interconnected clans. Ed O’Neill (“Married ... With Children”) plays the overriding patriarch, with Julie Bowen and Jesse Tyler Ferguson as his grown children. Also in the ensemble cast are Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Emmy recipient Eric Stonestreet and young Rico Rodriguez II. Deaths result, and other effects could be long-ranging. Andrea Bowen is back in the cast as Susan’s (Teri Hatcher) daughter, and new regulars for the season include Drea de Matteo (“The Sopranos”) and Jeffrey Nordling (“Once and Again”). ››› (Not rated: AS, P)

“TINKER BELL AND THE GREAT FAIRY RESCUE” Indeed, Peter Pan’s magical companion tries to save others of her kind in this animated, direct-to-video Disney fantasy. Current “Parenthood” co-star Mae Whitman – also heard in “Tinker Bell” and “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure” – reprises the voice of the main fairy, who tries to conceal her peers’ existence from humans. Kristin Chenoweth, Lucy Liu, Raven-Symone and Jesse McCartney also return to the voice cast. A notable addition this time is Michael Sheen (“Frost/Nixon”). Yet on Saturday, Sept. 11, the 24th season of “America’s Most Wanted: America Fights Back” premieres on Fox with Walsh at the helm. “I am the host of the show and the executive producer and all those labels that we put on people in show business,” he says. “It’s way more than a job. It’s a great job, a well-paying job, a hard job. For me it’s a passion, maybe to channel my frustration and heartbreak over the years, and try to direct it to getting justice for other crime victims.” In 1981, his son, Adam, then 6, was kidnapped and decapitated. Walsh and his wife, Reve, later founded the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He continues to fight for legislation to protect victims from predators, and “AMW” continues to help nab those predators. At this writing, the show had helped capture 1,125 criminals, “the worst of the worst,” Walsh says. “We caught more guys in the last year than in the (first) 23, and three weeks ago, we caught five guys in one week.” He’s consulted with five presidents and continues to pursue the truly evil. Given that new episodes return on this ominous anniversary, Walsh plans to devote some of the show to tracking terrorists. He was at Ground Zero while the rubble from the towers still burned. “This is an old show, 23 years on prime time,” Walsh says. “It’s mind-boggling, and the public is the reason. Our viewers are now worldwide. We have caught 30 guys off the Web alone.” For those who want to call in but fear calls will be traced, or fear retribution, Walsh promises anonymity. “You just tell me where that creep is – we have had amazing success because people want to do the right thing.”

“Dancing With the Stars” prides itself on having diverse casts, and it surely has scored on that count this time. From an ex-governor and would-be vice president’s daughter – Bristol Palin – to the female star of one of the most beloved dance movies ever, Jennifer Grey (“Dirty Dancing”), just about everyone is included as the popular ABC contest starts its 11th season Monday, Sept. 20. And it won’t take long for someone to get booted out: That happens the next night. Given her iconic role as Baby in “Dirty Dancing,” everpresent since its 1987 release thanks to television and home video, Grey knows “Dancing With the Stars” expectations will be high for her. “I think they’ve asked me to do it every season.” she says, “I just turned 50, and I can’t compare myself to the ‘me’ that the public remembers from that movie.” Also seen recently on the ABC Family drama series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” single mother Palin will have 20-month-old son Tripp with her during her “Dancing” stint.

Andy Whitfield stars as the title warrior, who is sold into slavery and battles for himself and his wife (Erin Cummings), also enslaved and sent elsewhere. On Saturday, Sept. 11, Fox’s venerable police documentary series “Cops” launches its 23rd season with its 800th episode. But there are still places where executive producer John Langley’s camera crews are not welcome to shoot police activity. “Chicago,” Langley says, “and Honolulu. In the case of Honolulu, I think it’s because the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau is very strong, and they’re afraid that it will somehow suggest to tourists that there is crime in Hawaii. God forbid that notion, right?” Asked if the bureau is aware that CBS’ reimagined version of the pistol-packing crime drama “Hawaii 5-0” is shooting in the Aloha State right now, Langley says, “Fictional crime is OK, but if it’s real crime ... there’s a tendency amongst some city fathers to avoid the topic. They want to pretend that it doesn’t exist.” One could understand sunny Honolulu’s reluctance to show its dark underbelly to surfers and beach bunnies, but when asked what rough-and-tumble Chicago’s excuse is, Langley says, “I don’t know. It’s an entrenched bureaucracy. I think everything depends on what the mayor wants, and maybe the mayor doesn’t want us there.”

Is The Donald planning a kinder, gentler version of “The Apprentice” this season? Not exactly, but the 16 contestants chosen for these new episodes include people who have been downsized from long-term jobs, as well as recent college graduates facing bleak prospects. Trump insists he won’t let that temper his own behavior — but behind the scenes he is helping set up interviews for the players with some of the show’s sponsors. BOARDWALK EMPIRE Sunday at 9 p.m. on (200) HBO From Emmy-winning writer Terence Winter and Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese comes this gritty new drama series set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, N.J., where political fixer and backroom dealer Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi) carves out a profitable niche as a supplier of illegal alcohol. DANCING WITH THE STARS Monday at 7 p.m. on / KNXV OK, let’s admit it. This show stretches the concept of “dancing” and “stars” way too far, but millions of viewers are sure to tune in for season 11, in which the stars include the apparently ageless (OK, 76) Florence Henderson, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino of “Jersey Shore,” former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner and Bristol “Daughter of Sarah” Palin. Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke return as hosts. DETROIT 1-8-7 Tuesday at 9 p.m. on / KNXV A film crew follows jaded, borderline reckless detective Louis Fitch (Michael Imperioli) and his rookie partner, Damon Washington (Jon Michael Hill), as they and their volatile mix of colleagues try to unravel case after case in one of the country’s murder capitals without unraveling themselves. The new season’s funniest show has an execution, Cloris Leachman running around in a bra, and a baby drinking from a rubber glove. Perhaps all aren’t comedic requirements, but they give Fox’s “Raising Hope,” Tuesday, Sept. 21, a wacky and hilarious premiere. The premise – four generations living a hardscrabble life under one roof – may have the ring of a reality show, but it’s perfect fodder for a half-hour comedy because of creator Greg Garcia (“My Name Is Earl”) and actors Leachman, Martha Plimpton, Garret Dillahunt, Shannon Woodward and Lucas Neff. At 84, Leachman, still beautiful and zany, is far more elegant in person than her Maw Maw character. Wearing a green flowing top and layers of green stone necklaces, she sits in the corner of the Beverly Hills Hotel bar and chats about her life in front of an audience for 63 years. Did wearing only a bra (and a pretty hideous one at that) give her pause? “You don’t care,” she says. “You can’t. If it’s fun I’ll do it. I’ll do anything.” In the pilot, 23-year-old slacker Jimmy (Neff) runs out to get his great-grandmother (Leachman) her pink bubblegum ice cream. Along the way, he meets a woman (guest star Bijou Phillips) who seems a little wild, but that only makes the sex that much better. The family is pleasant enough to her the next morning. Luckily, they have on the news and discover she’s a serial killer. Mom Virginia (Plimpton) makes short work of her, and soon the serial killer is in prison, but her capital punishment is delayed because she’s pregnant. As soon as possible, the state carries out its sentence, leaving Jimmy with his baby daughter, Princess Beyonce. Virginia wants Jimmy to deposit “it” at the fire station. Having been a teenage mom, working as a maid and living in her grandmother’s cramped house, Virginia knows how hard it is to be a young parent. Yet, she and her husband, Burt (Dillahunt), stayed together. As easy as it will be for everyone to call them dysfunctional, they function just fine – albeit a little closer to the edge than comfortable. “I love the show, I love the people in it, I love that it’s character driven,” Plimpton says. She’s in another part of the Beverly Hills Hotel lobby and about to take a sip of wine when Leachman wanders over to tell her (not exactly in a whisper) how awful her hair looks up.

He said: “For a long time now I have been worrying and praying that my blessed and gifted daughter would find her way back. At times, I was too vocal, I made the wrong decisions and certainly handled things the wrong way. I constantly asked God that if it was His will to take me before her, which I stand by to this day. “While some have made their pacts with the Devil, I made mine with God, to take me first, or simply help Lindsay find her way back, and if so, He can do whatever He wants with me.”

Michael, 50, realized his prayers had been answered when he saw Lindsay’s comeback skit - where she poked fun at her recent alcohol and drug problems - at the MTV Video Music Awards. He told UsMagazine.com: “My prayers were met. On the MTV Music Awards, I saw, heard and now know that Lindsay is back and I believe she will be better than ever.” Michael - who is estranged from his family - also issued an apology to ex-wife Dina and their children. He said: “While we are all accountable for our own actions, I apologize to Lindsay, Michael, Ali, Cody and even Dina, and I thank God for answering my prayers.”

Fiery fan Naomi Campbell Naomi Campbell carries a bottle of hot sauce to spice up her meals wherever she goes. The supermodel -who is known for her volatile temper - said she never leaves home without the fiery condiment in her handbag, so she can bring dishes up to the spicy standards of the food she enjoys cooking at home. She told website WWD.com: “I love cooking - everything spicy - I’ve been carrying around a bottle of hot sauce in my bag for I don’t know how many years.” The supermodel - who has Jamaican heritage - was recently spotted covering her food in hot sauce when dining with actor Leonardo DiCaprio, his girlfriend, model Bar Refaeli, and her boyfriend, Russian tycoon Vladimir Doronin during a boating holiday to the Italian island of Capri.

Despite making friends with ‘The Departed’ star Leonardo, Naomi, 40, said she’s not sure she could become a Hollywood actress herself, as she feel she is so recognizable she would be very hard to cast. She added: “To be honest, it would be very hard for me because I have this face that people know. “It would have to be a situation where I was either making fun of myself or acting completely different than who I am. “ “Any type of challenge is appealing to me - let’s put it that way.” At present, Naomi says that even after 25 years, she has no plans to retire from modeling. She said: “I love what I do. I am still working with all the greats. I live one day at a time. The things that I have committed to doing in the future I am looking forward to doing.”

An onlooker said: “She couldn’t indulge in food until her boyfriend’s bodyguard brought over her own sauce”.

In his song “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” Jimmy Buffett sings, Rahm Fama “I like mine with lettuce and tomato, Heinz 57 and Frenchfried potatoes, big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer …” Sounds like a man after Chef Rahm Fama’s heart. On Friday, Sept. 24, Fama begins a carnivorous odyssey across America in the new Food Network series, “Meat and Potatoes.” But it’s not just a burger or steak and a pile of spuds. “We’re going to do all forms of meat,” says Brian Lando, Food Network’s vice president of programming. “The ‘Meat and Potatoes’ title is really just a play on everyone’s favorite American fantasy of just having a great main dish that is meat-focused, with a delicious side. “So, every side dish isn’t going to be potatoes. We have coleslaw and a bunch of other sides that compliment the dish. ‘Meat and Potatoes,’ everybody knows what that means – a main course and a side dish to go with it.”

As the featured runner on the San Francisco 49ers since 2006, Frank Gore must seem like he’s been stuck on a treadmill. He’s getting lots of work in, but he hasn’t gone anywhere. Most of all, Gore hasn’t gone to the playoffs, as the 49ers have been stuck in mediocrity since the running back’s rookie season in 2005, winning no more than eight games in each of the past five years. But with the former University of Miami star entering his prime and leading an improving offense, plus the make-no-excuses

approach of emerging head coach Mike Singletary, and the overall average state of the rest of the NFC West, the 49ers’ fortunes could very well change this season. Gore is coming off a season in which he rushed for 1,120 yards, averaging nearly five yards a carry. He scored a career-high 10 rushing touchdowns, tying the franchise record. He’s also the only Niners player to rush for at least 1,000 yards in four seasons, and his 4,953 yards since 2006 are the fourthmost of any running back in that span.

Around noon local time on Saturday September 18th, the Lord Mayor of Munich will swing a mallet and drive the tap in to the first beer of the 2010 Oktoberfest. Held annually since 1810, with only a few of cancellations for wars with Napoleon and the rest of the world, Oktoberfest is perhaps the oldest and best known of all beer events. The Oktoberfest typically lasts sixteen days and ends in early October.

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

The very first Oktoberfest was held to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. There was a massive party, horse races and general frivolity. The party continued to be held every year to celebrate the anniversary of then King Ludwig I. In 1816 carnival booths were added, years later a parade was thrown in and Oktoberfest started to look a lot like we know it today. In 1950 the gala opening ceremonies were instituted and by 1960, Oktoberfest had become a world-wide event. As immigrants from Germany came to North America, smaller Oktoberfests sprouted up in their communities. You won’t see many towns without some version of an Oktoberfest. Held in Theresienwiese, or Meadow, and known Therese’s Meadow locally as Wiesn, the Oktoberfest is a series of tents and carnival rides and games laid out like a small city. The event is limited to Munich based breweries so you won’t see the variety of styles that Germany is know for. But that’s okay since there is still plenty to do and see. And, don’t forget the food. Sausages, or wurst, is one of the favored foods, since it is easiest to consume while holding a stein of beer in one hand, but that’s not all you will see. However in the tents, don’t worry, there is

plenty to eat. You can’t get served without a seat. And food is done big here. Whole sides of oxen are cooked, dozens of chickens at a time are spit-roasted, pig’s knuckle, rollmops (herring and sour cream), fish…all of these can be found if you hit the right tent. The Oktoberfest has plenty to do and see, but as far as we are concerned, it’s about the beer. Each Munich brewery has its own tent and each tent attracts a different crowd. Famous German restaurateur Michael Kaefer has his own tent which is small and cozy and serves Paulaner beer. These all combine to make it the number one spot at the festival to spot celebrities. Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr are well represented, but you can find Lowenbrau and Augustiner tents as well. The Lowenbrau tent is know for its 4.5 meter tall lion that greets visitors. And there is a tent run by the world famous Hofbrau Haus featuring their beer. Other tents are home to the even more Munich beers. At the Ochsenbraterei, where their motto is “All Kinds of Oxen” enjoy Spaten; and the Hippodrom features Franziskaner as well as a wine bar. It’s hip, trendy feel attracts the younger crowd as well as some celebrities. All in all, there are fourteen tents to choose from and each features different beer, differ-

ent food and a different atmosphere. Despite the fact that some of these tents hold up to 10,000 people, reservations are strongly encouraged, especially on busy days. What kind of beer is served at the festival? Typically we know Oktoberfest beers as the malty Marzen styles, usually copper in color and showing very little hop presence. And while this is somewhat true, there is some variety. Paulaner makes a beer they call Wiesn which is paler in color and is their traditional beer to serve at the Oktoberfest. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Oktoberfest, Paulaner has, for the first time, put this beer in one liter cans and sent it over to the United States. Look for it in very limited quantities packaged with a replica of the large stein used in Germany. Despite all this talk about Marzen and other lager beers, this probably would not have been what was served at the original wedding celebration. For those of you that know the Reinheitsgebot, sometimes known as the German Beer Purity law (although it really had nothing to do with beer purity), you will know that in 1810 the law remained as originally written. It allowed for only Barley, Water and Hops as ingredients for beer. No wheat or rye was permitted. This was done to ensure plenty of wheat and rye grains were available for bakers

Okay, are we off to the Oktoberfest? Great…enjoy yourself, make sure you have plenty of cash because things can get expensive. And make sure you know the song Ein Prosit which is very simple and goes like this: Ein Prosit, Ein Prosit, der gemütlichkeit Ein Prosit, Ein Prosit, der gemütlichkeit Eins, zwei, Drei g’soffe! Zick! zacke! zicke! zacke! hoi! hoi! hoi! Zicke! zacke! zicke! zacke! hoi! hoi! hoi! Prosit

to produce reasonably priced bread without having to engage in competitive pricing with breweries. Wheat beers were reserved only for the nobles and could be produced only under very specific license. It was likely that what was consumed during the first Oktoberfest would have been a weisse, or wheat, beer. Most likely it would have been more amber in color similar to the popular Schneider Weisse. Incidentally, the Schneider brewery was a participant in Oktoberfest until a fire destroyed their Munich brewery in the 1950’s. They now brew about 50 miles outside of Munich making them ineligible to participate. As further trivia, the Reinheitsgebot was repealed in 1988 lifting almost all restrictions to ingredients in German beer. Oh, and one more interesting item…everybody knows that you need yeast to make beer, so why isn’t yeast listed in the law? It wasn’t until Louis Pasteur discovered this microorganism in the 1800’s that people understood the role of yeast in producing beer, so the language allowing yeast was added later.

Its not just about the festival, Denver and the whole Front Range of Colorado is a great beer destination so we’ll be visiting New Belgium Brewery, Left Hand Brewing, Oskar Blues, Redstone Meadery, Avery Brewing, Great Divide and Breckenridge…and probably a few more. We will be at classic beer bars like Falling Rock Taphouse, and at newer ones like The Cheeky Monk, Euclid Hall, The Rackhouse and Freshcraft. We will make every effort to attend everything that goes on this week;

every party, special release, competition and event. All this for the sake of providing you, our loyal readers, with the most comprehensive report possible on this amazing week dedicated to beer. Don’t think we are doing this for ourselves, we are doing it for you. With a little luck, you will see this magnificent write up in next week’s edition, or if, for some reason, we don’t get around to meeting our deadline, you might see a repeat article, or an article on something else, or maybe just a couple dozen column inches of blank space. Who knows? If you have any complaints, talk to the publisher…we’re off on a week long beer adventure…and who knows when, or if, we will be back.

Lady Jasmine Cigar Diva “Is It Mold or Plume?” This week we are talking about small patches of mold, or is it plume? If the cigar is fuzzier than a two-week-old kitten, it could be “aging very nicely.” Fuzz factor aside, it normally takes years to develop plume on a cigar. Unless your shop sells vintage cigars, it is unlikely to be plume.

FO RT U I TO U S O N E

Third Annual Downtown Chandler Octoberfest! Beer, bands and brats at SanTan Brewing Company 8 S. San Marcos Plaza, Chandler 2PM-11PM

But it’s not often easy for a novice to tell the difference between mold and plume if you don’t know what to look for. The most common type of cigar mold is the white variety that occurs in small patches on the wrapper. Plume is a crystallization of oils from the cigar wrapper, and it appears as a fine spray of sugar, more or less evenly distributed across the surface of the stick. Mold, on the other hand, is a living and social creature that likes to gather in colonies. Well, maybe not social, but you get the point — it shows up in discrete separate spots, making your cigar look like a petri dish.

Fleming’s Month of Discovery Wine Event Sep 16th, 23th, 30th Cherry wood walls, classic atmosphere and low lights is just the start of this dining experience. A steakhouse that is known to hold its own on the palette battle field of indulgence starring in prime steaks and delicious seafood. Yet Flemings carries another reputation, one for wine, as in the Fleming’s 100, a list of 100 wines by the glass. Throughout September, each Thursday night you are invited to give the NEW 100, a piece of your own expertise. On each of the opening nights, 20 of the new wines will be displayed at your tasting pleasure, giving you the ability to say things like “ah yes, I too smell strawberry in this.” Don’t want to pretend? Then come in for a real sniff and taste lesson from the expert wine managers. At the Chandler location, just ask for Nicholas Longobardi and learn from a true master. If you feel a bit tipsy don’t forget to munch on the hors d’oevres selection. Staying for dinner gets you a $25 dining credit for that night, so make an evening out of it. The last tasting on the 30th will feature wines hand selected by the Fleming’s local experts themselves and by then, you should be a pro yourself. Wine tastings are $25, Chandler (480) 940-1900 FlemingsSteakHouse.com Fashion Forward’s 1year Anniversary Sept 16th The W Hotel Scottsdale has been keeping us in the loop of fashion by showcasing popular designer trends on models strutting up and down the W rooftop runway. Pickin’ in the Pines Bluegrass & Acoustic Music Festival Sept 17-19th Music festivals are something we do not get enough of these days, maybe it’s the scorching AZ heat or maybe it’s a generation built on giant high-tech concert arenas, probably a bit of both. Luckily Flagstaff has not given up on the idea and is providing us with a cool breeze among the pines and cool bluegrass music to ease our minds. And yes, I realize that just rhymed. This festival is all about camping out, sitting around the campfire and having a jam session. The cool thing is, many of the artists come down and join in on it, so you may get a lesson out of it. Another perk is Todd Crowley’s Traveling Musical Petting Zoo- and no this in not a goat-withbells type deal. On the contrary, it is an RV full of musical instruments for you to play around with. And who said petting zoos where for kids. The concert itself features a great line up of Seldom Scene, Audie Blaylock and Redline, John Reischman and the Jaybirds, the Dixie Bee-Liners, the Freight Hoppers, Town Mountain, Great Bear Trio, Tucson’s Titan Valley Warheads and Flagstaff-based Burnett Family Bluegrass. You can even attend a workshop on topics like musical philosophy and songwriting. This 3 day event is worth the trip North for everyone passionate about music. http://Pickininthepines.org tickets are $25-$75

Lady Gaga “hyperventilated” when she was forced to go make-up free for her ‘Alejandro’ video. The eccentric singer admitted she clashed with director and photographer Steven Klein over his vision to see the star minus her famous cosmetics and blonde locks, but in the end she was glad he forced her to be herself. She told Japan’s Vogue Hommes magazine: “We are both very strongwilled and we both have very specific visions. And I knew his specific vision and he knew mine so that it was like tugging at a rope together. And then we tied a beautiful knot! I wanted to bring him out of his comfort zone and he wanted to bring me out of mine.

LADY GAGA’S MAKE-UP HORROR

“He was stripping me down, taking off all my make-up, no eyelashes, no liner, saying, ‘I’m cutting all of your hair off’ and not tanned ... For me, I was hyperventilating, but it did force me to be myself.” The ‘Telephone’ singer - who is famed for her kooky fashion sense - recently revealed she thinks stars owe it to their fans to look good on the red carpet. She said: “I think you should look nice all the time. When I meet celebrities and they’re in casual clothes, I’m always like, ‘Whaaat?’ I don’t mean to be judgmental, but it would do them better to be who they really are, all the time. When I get out of a car and there are 30 fans waiting for me, I know I’m dressed the way I should be.”

The singer-and-actress has been in negotiations with show bosses about joining the panel following the departures of Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi.

However, her demands for a film and TV programmes were refused.

BILLY CORGAN STILL VALID Billy Corgan says anyone who thinks he’s surpassed his creative peak can “go f**k yourself”. The Smashing Pumpkins singer continues to release new music and tour with the band and finds it “insulting” that anyone would insinuate his best days as an artist are behind him. He told The Seattle Times: “Listen, there is no greater insult to me as an artist than to basically implicate that you’ll never do better than you did. My answer to all that is go f**k yourself.” Referring to his grunge heyday in the early 90s, Billy added: “Go back and live in video land, go read Rolling Stone from 1994 and read about indie integrity and see Kurt Cobain standing on the hill with the T-shirt, ‘Corporate Magazines Suck’.

“You can live it in perpetuity. I’m gone. I’ve moved on to the next town. You know? I’ve got a different horse and I’m riding into a different sunset. And the people that are around seem to be having a really good f***ing time.” The ‘Today’ rocker also pointed out that he has faced a lot of criticism for performing under the Smashing Pumpkins name - despite being the only original band member - but other bands continue to tour without attracting anywhere near the same level of criticism. He added: “I’m as happy as I’ve been in the Smashing pumpkins since 1996. Why isn’t that important? Why doesn’t U2 retire? Haven’t they made enough money? Why are the Rolling Stones still on tour? “There’s only Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Keith Richards. Why don’t they retire? I don’t understand. What’s the difference? If people wanna play and people wanna go, what does it f***ing matter?”

An insider said: “She was angling for an overall deal at Fox, including a put picture, to keep her movie career going. But Fox said no.” Lopez’s manager Benny Medina arranged a meeting between the ‘Jenny From the Block’ singer and producers in June and she accepted the judging role in July. She was also allegedly approached

by Cowell to be a judge on the US version of his programme ‘The X Factor’ which will air in autumn 2011 before committing to ‘American Idol’. A source revealed: “I think it was just positioning. In the end, she didn’t turn up her nose up at $12 million.” The 41-year-old star - who was dropped by her record label Sony Music Epic Records last year - has also allegedly asked ‘American Idol’ bosses to delay announcing the new judging line-up until later this month to coincide with the release of her new single, her first release on Island Def Jam. Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler is also believed to be joining Lopez on the panel.

Taylor Swift seemed to forgive Kanye West for his stage invasion at the recent MTV Video Music Awards. The 20-year-old country singer performed new track ‘Innocent’ at the ceremony, which was held at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre, and seemed to reach out to the rapper in the lyrics. She sang: “Everyone of us has messed up, too. I hope you remember today is never too late to be brand new.” The track also included the lyrics: “Thirty-two and still growing up now; who you are is not what you did. You’re still an innocent.” At the 2009 VMAs, Kanye interrupted Taylor in the middle of her acceptance speech for the Best Female Video prize to tell the audi-

After coming off stage, Kanye dedicated his performance to his late mother Donda, who died from complications caused by cosmetic surgery in 2007. He wrote on his twitter page: “I wish my Mom was here but I know she’s looking down. I want to make her so happy today.” Lady Gaga was the biggest winner on the night, going home with eight of the 13 awards she was nominated for, including Video of the Year for ‘Bad Romance’.

Media Link: Aisha Tyler, who provides voice-overs for “Halo: Reach,” can also be seen in “Bedtime Stories,” which airs Thursday, Sept. 23, on Starz. In 2001, the video game universe became divided. Some took the side of Master Chief and his alien-smashing compatriots, while others found the colorful combat a bit too slow for elite gamers. Whether you took the side of the Spartan or stood against him, one thing is certain: The “Halo” franchise is a force to be reckoned with, and its latest offering is ready to take center stage, eagerly awaiting your judgment. In “Halo: Reach,” you’ll join Noble Team, the best of the best Spartan soldiers, as they forge the last line of defense against the Covenant army. As Earth’s final hope for salvation, you and your squadmates will need to utilize every talent, weapon and gadget at your disposal to blast, frag and incinerate your foes. The “Halo” franchise has always managed to evolve with each iteration,

resulting in a steadily improving gaming experience. In “Halo: Reach,” the improvements keep coming with a more detailed story, a new graphics engine and revamped AI. Our story, aliens-versushumans plot aside, takes a new turn by concentrating on a colorful cast of characters found in Noble Team. Each member of the squad has his or her own personality, skill set, weapons and equipment, making them the most interesting cast in the franchise to date. The environments within the “Halo” franchise have always been awe-inspiring, but thanks to an all-new engine, “Halo: Reach” will have some of the most epic and detailed worlds that the Xbox 360 is capable of rendering. The game’s AI has also been overhauled, creating a unique gaming experience that is built on enemies’ reactions to you rather than prescripted, predictable moments.

LADY GAGA’S MCQUEEN TRIBUTE

BY JACQUELINE CUTLER

Lady Gaga paid tribute to the late Alexander McQueen at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The eccentric singer - who won eight prizes, after being nominated for a record 13 - wore two of his gowns at the prestigious event and arrived at the Los Angeles ceremony in a longflowing regal McQueen design, which consisted of gold, orange and green with a Renaissance-style art print on the front and a pair of his 12-inch Armadillo heels.

Kelli Giddish

The look was completed with a long white wig and gold-feathered headdress and she was accompanied by a military-themed entourage as she arrived on the white carpet. Later, Gaga changed into a black leather number by McQueen as she picked up her Best Pop Video award and finished the evening off in her controversial raw meat outfit, which she struggled to walk in.

She told the crowd: “This outfit’s too heavy to walk in. I’m sorry if I’m a little slow this evening.” This is not the first time the 24-year-old star has paid tribute to McQueen, who committed suicide in February. Following his tragic death, Gaga dedicated a performance of ‘Telephone’ at the BRIT Awards in February and also posted a picture of the pair of them on her twitter page.

YASMINE LE BON’S MIRROR FEAR

She added to Vogue. co.uk: “Amber loves people and she’s humble. She’s humble enough to learn from others and that’s important in modeling. She has fun with it too.”

Yasmin Le Bon says looking in the mirror “ruins” her day. The model has revealed her beauty secret is to look in the mirror as little as possible to avoid over-analyzing her looks, as being short-sighted makes everyone appear more attractive than they actually are. She explained: “I try to look in the mirror as little as I can - it completely ruins my day. I’ve become a bit short sighted and I refuse to wear glasses because everyone looks much more beautiful this way. It would spoil the illusion.” However, Yasmin is thrilled her daughter Amber - with Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon - is following in her footsteps as a model and she thinks the brunette beauty will go far, because she is “humble”.

Speaking at shoe designer Manolo Blahnik’s party for Fashion’s Night Out in London last night (08.09.10), Yasmin didn’t show too much bias toward her daughter however, naming Freja Beha Erichsen as her favourite model. She said, “There aren’t many darkhaired, dark-eyed girls around so when they do come about they need to be exceptionally good, which Freja is.”

In the excellent opening scene of NBC’s “Chase,” premiering Monday, Sept. 20, a tough U.S. Marshal pursues a suspect on a long, hard chase, into a park, up stairs, through traffic, into the middle of stampeding cattle, a rodeo and, finally, a tunnel. This unfolds in Texas, and is the sort of scene destined to end with someone getting decked. Annie Frost (Kelli Giddish) does a nice job of kicking the bad guy’s butt, and she never could have nabbed him had she been tottering about in six-inch heels and a pencil skirt. “She is always truly ready to catch the bad guy,” says Taneia Lednicky, the show’s costume designer. “It is really important to me. She would never do anything to inhibit her ability to get the guy.” Annie is beautiful and undoubtedly female, but without the stereotypical sexual overtones TV shows insist on. And from this pared-down, yet very potent character, Lednicky says, she hopes girls take a message. “I hope my daughter will know as she grows up, you don’t have to trade femininity for power,” she says. “You can have both.” Annie looks great. She always wears pants, and Lednicky has her in jeans from Saks, Nordstrom and 7 for All Mankind.
