BANDLEADER DOC SEVERINSEN RETURNS TO THE VALLEY Doc Severinsen & The San Miguel 5 Thursday Oct. 14, 2010 at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present Doc Severinsen & The San Miguel 5 on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. Doc Severinsen’s virtuosity on the trumpet is rivaled only by his unforgettable stage presence. This Grammy Award winner has toured with the Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman bands, recorded more than 30 albums — from big band to classical — and worked with major orchestras throughout North America, including 22 seasons as the Phoenix Symphony’s principal pops conductor. He is best known, however, as Johnny Carson’s witty and wildly dressed bandleader on The Tonight Show. Now living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Severinsen will perform Latin-fused jazz and favorite standards with the virtuoso musicians of The San Miguel 5. “I came to Mexico with retirement on my mind, but when I heard them play I knew that I would be playing with them for some time to come,” notes Severinsen. “Latino music, along with the blues, has always been among my favorites.” Tickets are available for $49 and $59 through the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ Patron Services Box Office at (480) 994-ARTS (2787), ext. 2, or online at www.ScottsdalePerformingArts.org. TONY, EMMY AND GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD WINNER JOHN LITHGOW PERFORMS STORIES BY HEART John Lithgow in Stories by Heart

October 21–22, 2010 Thursday @ 7:30 p.m. and Friday @ 8 p.m. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Virginia G. Piper Theater

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present John Lithgow in his critically acclaimed, one-man theatrical memoir Stories by Heart on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. A Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor, John Lithgow offers a touching and humorous reflection on storytelling as the tie that binds humanity. Invoking memories of his grandmother and father before him, Lithgow traces his roots as an actor and storyteller, interspersing his own experiences with two great stories that were read to him and his siblings when they were children: Uncle Fred Flits By by P.G. Wodehouse and Haircut by Ring Lardner. In Uncle Fred Flits By, a fretful young Englishman is taken on a wild afternoon’s escapade in suburban London by his irrepressible uncle. In a hilarious tour de force, Lithgow performs with zany abandon, portraying 10 distinct, outrageous characters (including a parrot). By contrast, Haircut is a darkly comic look at Midwestern American stubbornness. It is a captivating yarn told by a gossipy barber in small-town Michigan as he gives a shave and a haircut to a stranger in

town. Stories by Heart provides ample evidence of the power of storytelling, the magic of theater and the talents of one of our greatest actors. John Lithgow has been working in show business for 40 years and has achieved extraordinary success in a wide variety of ventures. In 1973, he won a Tony Award three weeks after his Broadway debut in David Storey’s The Changing Room. Since then, he has appeared on Broadway 19 more times, winning a second Tony, three more Tony nominations and four Drama Desk Awards. In the early 1980s, Lithgow began to make a major mark in films. At that time, he was nominated for Oscars in back-to-back years for The World According to Garp and Terms of Endearment. He has appeared in more than 30 other films, including Footloose, Harry and the Hendersons and Shrek. For television, Lithgow has been nominated for 11 Emmy Awards and won five of them, most recently for his terrifying work as ‘The Trinity Killer’ on Showtime’s Dexter. Perhaps his most celebrated creation, however, is the loopy character of the alien High Commander Dick Solomon on the hit NBC comedy series 3rd Rock from the Sun, for which he earned another three Emmys. In addition to his acting, Lithgow has written eight best-selling children’s picture books, released three children’s albums and performed concerts for children with numerous symphonies. He has received both his Bachelor’s degree and an honorary doctorate from Harvard University and a Fulbright Grant to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Tickets are available for $49 and $59 through the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ Patron Services Box Office at (480) 994-ARTS (2787), ext. 2, or online at www.ScottsdalePerformingArts.org. Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Production on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” is set to begin within the next month and Summit Entertainment has finally rounded out the cast – namely the Denalis, the only non-human-feeding vampire clan aside from the Cullens. Maggie Grace (“Lost”), MyAnna Buring (“The Descent”) and Casey LaBow (“Moonlight”) will play a trio of Russian vampire sisters – one of whom vies with Kristen Stewart’s Bella for the affection of Robert Pattinson’s Edward. Mia Maestro (“Alias”) and Christian Camargo (“Dexter”) have also joined the cast as the heads of the Denali clan. Be among the first to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Disney’s Diamond Edition, the award winning ‘Beauty and the Beast’; the TV series ‘Caprica’ including the pilot; the comicthriller movie ‘Leaves of Grass’ starring Edward Norton; and ‘Brutal Beauty’ a documentary on Roller Derby featuring Portland’s Rose City Rollers are available on DVD! For more on these and other DVD & Blu-ray releases, visit www. ScreenScene.org

Based on a true story, Walt Disney Pictures’ “Secretariat” stars Diane Lane as Penny Chenery, a housewife and mother who agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables despite her lack of horseracing knowledge. Against all odds, Penny, a veteran trailer named Lucian (John Malkovich) and a horse named Big Red take the 1973 horseracing industry by storm - and make history in the process. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “‘Secretariat’ is plagued by acting that ranges from overly melodramatic to downright awful and an unevenly paced story that meddles too much in business and not nearly enough in family. Like its titular racehorse, the movie picks up steam as it rounds the

final turn. However, by then, it is far too many legs behind to come out a winner.” Grade: D Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “A thrilling and informative view of the historical racing event that held so many of us captive that are old enough to remember, with moving performances of ‘behind-the-scenes’ of family, conviction, and the belief of winning, are lessons for us all. ‘Secretariat’ is a ‘must see’ on my list!” Grade: B+

Reviewers’ Roundup: ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’ In Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s dramatic comedy “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” Keir Gilchrist plays Craig Gilner, a young man who checks himself into a mental health clinic upon becoming overwhelmed by the demands of being a teenager. Once there, Craig develops a friendship with an adult patient named Bobby (Zach Galifianakis) and is romantically drawn to another teenage patient named Noelle (Emma Roberts). During his five-day stay, Craig learns how to live, love and deal with the pressures of growing up. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “In spite of a strangely sedated style, ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’ is a charmingly funny, oftentimes insightful and sweetly heartfelt motion picture. Gilchrist and Roberts are both tremendously charismatic performers while Galifianakis delivers his unique brand of unkempt comedy without ever once going too far over the top. Fleck and Boden have hit the cinematic trifecta, engaging audiences of all ages with a perfect blend of astute comedy, tangible drama and endearing emotion.” Grade: B Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “A

surprisingly sincere comedy about a serious subject matter handled well by cast and crew. Must mention a strong supporting performance by Viola Davis.” Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “What starts as a story of teenage angst, morphs into a film for both the young and the old, on living with the inequities we find in ourselves and in others. The ensemble cast’s weaving of the wide range of human emotions, deliver the comedic and dramatic sequences with heart, making ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’ quite an adventurous comedy-drama!” Grade: B

Reviewers’ Roundup: ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’ In Woody Allen’s “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” Gemma Jones plays a woman named Helena who surrenders her life to a charlatan fortune teller after her husband Alfie (Anthony Hopkins) leaves her to pursue his lost youth and a freespirited call-girl (Lucy Punch). At the same time, Helena’s daughter Sally (Naomi Watts) develops a crush on her boss (Antonio Banderas) while her husband Roy (Josh Brolin) becomes moonstruck over a mysterious woman (Freida Pinto). And all of their pipe dreams only lead to perilous hot water. (R - 98 minutes) The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Stan Robinson (ScreenScene. org): “One can expect ‘slices of life’ portrayals in a Woody Allen film and ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’ is no exception. Once the premises, and yes, there are always a few, are established, the experience becomes the journey of discovery as we the viewer examine our own intricacies’ to our personality as the characters due theirs. Its not the best from Woody Allen, it is an interesting ride.” Grade: C+

‘I Spit on Your Grave’ ~ Disturbing, yet effective… Interview/Review by Stan Robinson The original 1978 movie was a distant memory when I sat down to screen this latest re-telling of a writer who is brutalized during her cabin retreat and seeks revenge on her attackers, who left her for dead. Viewing this movie with ‘fresh eyes’, the first 20 minutes or so is quite disturbing as we feel extreme compassion for the woman and total absolute disdain against her male attackers. As she enacts her revenge on the first of her attackers, the feeling of ‘getting one’s just due’, becomes the effective antidote for the distasteful emotions against the protagonists… I’m so disdainful of terms like ‘remake’; they’re more a current vision through the presenter’s eye of a

previous theme frozen in ‘celluloid’ time. Woven, and quite often subconsciously, into each retelling are social and current mindsets of the period.

venge on her first attacker, a round of applause came from the audience, which were primarily men! 3 ½ of 5 stars

I asked director Steven Monroe how he came to the project; Steven: “The rights to the project were already acquired so the plans to retell it were already in motion, I just wanted to get myself on it as a director and put my thumb print on it, to do something interesting. I always felt that any film that pushes buttons and is disturbing and thought provoking, already has an interesting backbone to it. If a story is going to be retold it should be good and solid.”

Starring Sarah Butler, Chad Lindberg, Daniel Franzese, Tracey Walter, Jeff Branson, Rodney Eastman, and Andrew Howard.

In production, the aspect of time vs. the performances is always a factor, were there any surprises during production; Steven: I knew that the assault and the rape sequences needed a good amount of time for dealing with the subject matter and the actors. I knew exactly how I was going to shoot them, my cinematographer and I, Neil Lisk worked it out, you can know exactly what you’re going to do when you’re dealing with subject matter like this. As far as the revenge sequences, I knew that they would take the greatest amount of time, not only did they deal with physical and emotional issues, they also dealt with make-up effects, rigging issues and everything so nothing was really a surprise time wise. Shooting the actual rape sequences ended up being a lot more difficult than we thought they were going to be emotionally because of the way they were shot. I shot everything from the beginning of the scene to the end of the scene. I didn’t do a bunch of different pieces, like I need this shot or that shot, a hand here, a look there. We had everything choreographed and the camera would just ‘steal’ everything. In letting a scene like that, or any of those ‘play’ like that for its entirety, after the first take ended up being a little bit of a ‘kick in the head’ to everybody, we all needed a few minutes to recover from it, especially Sarah…” There’s more with director Steven R. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “All of the primary characters feel an awful lot like reincarnations of Allen. Each exhibits a different one of the filmmaker’s quirky tics. Needless to say, one neurotic nut is enough. Watching three or four Allens bob around the screen can get a little exasperating. And despite how many Allens there are in ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,’ it is still the same old story.” Grade: D

Why It’s Kind of a Funny Story Is So Relatable

Mention AZ Weekly’s “Dinner & A Movie”

(Not Valid on Saturdays)

By Randy Montgomery It’s Kind of a Funny Story is a carefully written comedy about a serious subject. Screenwriting director team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck introduce us to Craig (Keir Gilchrist), a clinically depressed New York City teen who often contemplates suicide. The pressures of being a young adult and struggling to get into the perfect college has proven too much. When Craig no longer feels he can control himself, he wanders into a hospital and asks to be admitted to the psychiatric ward. As a precautionary measure, the doctors require him to stay throughout the week for evaluation. While inside the hospital, Craig meets a host of characters including

a girl (Emma Roberts) who he takes a liking to and another patient named Bobby (Zack Galifianakis) who he quickly befriends. While filled with a lot of comedy, this “funny story” never oversteps its bounds when it comes to the sensitive subject matter of depression and psychiatric disorders. “We used the novel as a guide,” says Boden. “The novel by Ned Vizzini is loosely based on his own experience. He really walked that tightrope between being respectful of a very serious subject manner, but approaching it with humor and in a very entertaining way. We tried to stay true to that tonal balance.” Fleck adds, “The book treated the issues with respect and didn’t talk down to the characters.” The story and directorial team lead Galifianakis to the role, which is a bit more dramatic that his previous stints on the big screen. “I had seen other movies they had done. I had a lot of confidence in them.” Galifianakis went to say, “I like characters that are fragile and a little bit on the edge and Bobby is certainly both of those, even though he is the sage to Craig’s character. He has a couple of weaknesses, plus he has the capacity to be angry. So, it wasn’t much of a departure for me from my real life.” Craig and Bobby’s characters were very relatable to the stars who play them. “He’s (Craig) a guy around my age that deals with a lot of a lot of stress due to school. I could translate that to school as well as well as a job that takes a whole lot of my time that creates stress as well. I drew from experiences,” says Gilchrist. Adding to that Galifianakis says, “When I was in school there was a lot of pressure, more pressure than any other time in my life. Society is putting to much pressure on young people.”

14

internalizing our problems. It is very easy for us to think that our problems are our own and no one else if going through something similar. Opening up and sharing is OK,” says Fleck. Boden concludes with, “One of the great things about this story and the character of Craig is how he learns to appreciate what he has. I feel like I need to remind myself to count my blessings a lot of the time. I think that we would all be a lot happier if we did that more often.”

‘Never Let Me Go’ ~ a rude awakening on a social issue Review by Stan Robinson I have two rules I follow in writing reviews: never give vital clues that will spoil the first hand experience for moviegoers, and never, ever, give away an ending to a movie. For some movies it’s a lot easier to accomplish with out violating my rules, for others, namely ‘Never Let Me Go’ it is a true task to convey the essence of an excellent film, and not spoil your first viewing experience. As children, Ruth (Keira Knightley), Kathy (Carey Mulligan) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield), spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults and experience the aspects of the world along with their hopes and desires of approaching adulthood, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other. As they learn the lessons of life, the school is preparing them for the haunting reality that awaits them.

Gilchrist would be happy “…if people walk out (of the movie) with the message of hope, or finding how connections with other people can be healing.”

‘Never Let Me Go’ is an emotionally stimulating film that brings center stage an aspect that has been scientific research for quite some time. Here’s a clue, as an organ donor (as this reviewer is) and you viewed ‘The Island’ (2005) which presented the basic theme in a futuristic sci-fi setting, this film gives one a stark view of a possible reality… 4 ½ of 5 stars

‘Life As We Know It’ ~ the love of a friend wins out! Review by Stan Robinson That’s the thought of the two central characters when they realize that ‘life as they know it’ will be forever changed in spite of their feelings for each other, because of their love for their best friends. Two single adults (Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel) are the best friends of a married couple. Although the two single adults literally can’t stand each other, the male friends and female friends each have an extremely longtime bonded relationship. When their mutual best friends die in an accident, they learn that they are to become the caregivers to their friends’ orphaned baby girl. The bantering and comedic moments as the essence of relationships are presented from both the male and female perspectives, gives us the overall elements of friendship, love, and caring. There are hilarious fun moments as the two singles learn to be parents, and although the ending is quite predictable, it’s an entertaining ride along the way! Starring Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Josh Lucas, Alexis Clagett, Brynn Clagett, Brooke Clagett, and Hayes MacArthur. Directed by Greg Berlanti. Written by Ian Deitchman & Kristin Rusk Robinson. Warner Bros. Pictures release. Rated PG-13 for sexual material, language and some drug content.

Now Playing! “Waiting for ‘Superman’” By Stan Robinson Centering on education, this documentary follows a handful of promising kids through a system that inhibits, rather than encourages, academic growth. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim provides an exhaustive review of public education, surveying “drop-out factories” and “academic sinkholes,” methodically dissecting the system and its seemingly intractable problems. The presentation reminds us that education “statistics” have names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily, whose stories make up the engrossing foundation of “Waiting for ‘Superman’”. Directed by Davis Guggenheim. Written by Davis Guggenheim & Billy Kimball. Paramount Vantage release.

A Crop Worth A Whole Lot of Cash By Randy Montgomery A hot topic on this year’s ballot in California and numerous other states; the legalization of marijuana for personal and/or medical use. America’s number one cash crop is no longer corn or wheat and forget about cotton; it is marijuana. In California, the crop is becoming just as common in wine country as grapes. Attitudes about growing and using the plant vary by county. Director Adam Ross explores California and explains to audiences how marijuana has legally and illegally changed the culture and business of the Golden (now green) state. Cash Crop is playing exclusively at Madcap Theatres in Tempe, AZ. Wonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in October 2010? There’s Joseph’s ‘Fall Preview’, and Stan’s ‘Most Anticipated Movies’! For Joseph J. Airdo’s list visit Examiner.com/Phoenix ~ For Stan Robinson’s list visit ScreenScene.org

Even though its executive producer, Denise Cramsey, used to work on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” it’s not accurate to call her new NBC show “Extreme Makeover: School Edition.” “We are not knocking down and rebuilding, no,” says Cramsey. On Friday, Oct. 15, NBC premieres “School Pride,” from Cramsey and fellow executive producer Cheryl Hines (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), which goes into communities and helps them renovate and reenergize their aging and broken public schools. Schools highlighted in the episodes are Enterprise Middle School in Compton, Calif; Lanier Elementary School in Baton Rouge, La.; Kingston Springs Elementary in Nashville, Tenn.; Communication and Media Arts School in Detroit; Needles (Calif.) High School; and Los Angeles Center for Enrichment Studies.

Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) is an enthusiastic member of the McKinley High glee club in “Glee,” airing Tuesdays on Fox.

Kate Walsh stars as a doctor in a Southern California medical group in “Private Practice,” airing Thursdays on ABC.

“HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON” With so many animated features released these days, it takes a lot for one to stand out for originality ... and this one does, even without the 3-D effects it had in theaters. In the adaptation of the same-named Cressida Cowell book, Jay Baruchel voices a young Viking-in-training named Hiccup who wants to impress his demanding father (voice of Gerard Butler) by mastering the title task. His mentor has the enjoyable vocals of comic and late-night television host Craig Ferguson. America Ferrera and “Superbad” alumni Jonah Hill and Christopher Mintz-Plasse also are heard. ››› (PG: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray)

“JONAH HEX” Josh Brolin embodies the DC Comics character who gives the Old West a supernatural twist in an adventure that barely made a dent at the summer movie box office, but has some creative moments along the way. A bounty hunter who’s pursued by the law himself in the wake of the Civil War, the literally scarred Hex is enlisted to stop a renegade colonel (John Malkovich) whose plot against the United States involves the undead – and who has taken a heavy personal toll on Hex. Megan Fox expectedly enhances the scenery as the prostitute fond of our hero. ›› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“THE TUDORS: THE FINAL SEASON” The lavishly produced Showtime saga of King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), his court and his wives came to a close with this fourth round that sets up England for new leadership. The plentiful political intrigue doesn’t diminish the personal stories of Henry’s relationships with spouses Katherine Howard and Katherine Parr (Tamzin Merchant, Joely Richardson). Singer Joss Stone concludes her role as Anne of Cleves from the previous season, with Henry Cavill, Max Brown and Simon Ward also wrapping up their parts. ›››› (Not rated: AS, V) “GHOST WHISPERER: THE FINAL SEASON” Though the story seeds were planted for it to continue if CBS had renewed it again – or if ABC had picked it up, a thought for a while – Jennifer Love Hewitt’s supernatural drama came to an end last spring, after what would have to be deemed a healthy run (five years) in the current television era. Much of this concluding round deals with Melinda (Hewitt) and Jim’s (David Conrad) son, Aiden (Connor Gibbs), who also can connect with ghosts ... through an ability even deeper than his mother’s in some ways. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) “JOHNNY STACCATO” He would become one of the top filmmakers in independent American movies, but John Cassavetes (“Faces,” “A Woman Under the Influence”) first had a season as a television star in this unique 1959-60 drama, of which he directed several episodes. The character is a New York-based detective and jazz musician, and his cases have the same moody tone that informs his melodies. Gena Rowlands (alias Mrs. Cassavetes), Michael Landon and Elizabeth Montgomery are among the guest stars ... and the musicians sitting in with Staccato include Shelly Manne and later film composer extraordinaire John Williams. ››› (Not rated: AS, V)

For most of three previous seasons of NBC’s spy-caper show “Chuck,” airing Mondays, Morgan Grimes (Joshua Gomez) has spent his time either at the Los Angeles apartment of his best friend, big-box retail geek-turned-spy Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi), or at their workplace, the Burbank, Calif., Buy More electronics store. Last season, Morgan became aware of Chuck’s CIA activities, and this year, in season four, he’s getting operational experience with Chuck and military man John Casey (Adam Baldwin). “I’m having a lot more fun,” says Gomez, taking a break in his trailer on the show’s sets at Warner Bros. Studios (also in Burbank). “I’m getting out of the Buy More, having more scenes with Zach and Adam. It’s every boy’s dream. “We’re having a blast. I think Zach and I are pretty happy that we get to do what we did from the beginning, play best friends and be friends on-screen.” At the same time, the CIA has co-opted the Buy More. “Morgan’s still (got his) Buy More cover,” Gomez says, “and is holding down that world, but he’s now also in the spy world.” Learning Chuck’s secret has also helped Morgan – as it has also helped Chuck – evolve from a geeky man-boy into a still-geeky man. “He was comfortable where he and Chuck were,” Gomez says, “just doing their thing. Then all this stuff started to change, and it was a little hard for him. “Now he’s come around obviously and has grown up.” But Morgan’s not quite grown-up enough to pack a pistol. “When I’ve been handed a gun,” Gomez says, “it’s usually been empty. I haven’t gotten there yet. I’m hoping that happens in season four, at least once. I shot one off in training – that didn’t go well. Based on that, I suspect I won’t get one anytime soon.”

Airing over three consecutive nights beginning Monday, Oct. 11, the six-hour PBS series “God in America,” a co-venture of “Frontline” and “American Experience,” blends documentary footage, historical dramatizations and interviews with religious historians to tell the story of how faith is interwoven through the history of the United States. Says “Frontline” executive producer Michael Sullivan, “The genesis of this series we can really trace back to a conference (PBS station) WGBH held several years ago, a series of discussions with a room full of scholars and thinkers about religion in America. “The consensus at that conference was that America had what the scholars called ‘a

religious literacy problem,’ that though many Americans were deeply involved in their faith, many were also really ignorant about religion, about other faiths certainly, and sometimes even their own. “So out of those discussions, the idea for ‘God in America’ was born. We’d decided to try to tell the often-neglected historical story of how religious ideas and spiritual experience shape the public life of the country.” Campbell Scott narrates; the cast includes Michael Emerson as Puritan leader John Winthrop, Chris Sarandon as Abraham Lincoln and Keith David as Frederick Douglass.

BEER! SECTION 26

BEER! Okay folks, this week’s article is going to be a little short…and late. But you don’t care about the late part, somewhere there is someone trying to get this week’s issue laid out; he cares about the fact that it is late. As for being a short article, well somewhere else in this section, Maureen from Girls Pint Out has an article for you to read… let’s hope she went long this week. So why is this article short and late? Very simple, I spent all day Sunday half asleep because of a long, late night Saturday night. As you may know, Saturday was The Off-Centered Experience and it was everything that it was advertised to be. The music was fantastic, sets by Bad Cactus Band, La La Lust and Gooder kept the crowd entertained and the beer was out of this world. The Aged Dogfish Head beers were a big hit, but the fastest beers to go were Founders Devil Dancer and Papago Orange Blossom, served through a Randall with fresh oranges. A Randall is a device that was designed to be used with hops and connects between the keg and the tap. As the beer is poured it flows through whatever is in the Randall and picks up the extra flavor, changing somewhat the nature of the beer. There were other great beers as well… the BJ’s Aged Grand Cru and

Robust Coffee Porter were popular as was the SanTan Count Hopula, Four Peaks’ collaborative effort Motley Brue (for which they created a handle acknowledging the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild), Devious Double from SunUp and Quad the Impaler from Thunder Canyon. And it wasn’t just designated drivers that were over sipping on the Sonoran Brewing Company root beer.

over sixteen years, and their web site best describes the philosophy behind beer related charities: In our human society, beer is a conduit, or catalyst, for bringing people together. As a unified association of beer drinkers our potential to affect positive social change is enormous. Be kind and giving, love one another, care about one another, and help one another. Use beer as a way to do those things. That’s what Beer Church wants to do.

Anyway, it got me to thinking, what drives all these events, what makes them possible? Very simple, there is a charity connection to all of these events and brewers really enjoy supporting a good cause. In the case of The Off-Centered Experience, the charity was the Beer For Brains Foundation which was raising funds for the Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center in Phoenix. If Beer For Brains may sound unusual but it drives home the purpose of the organization. It is designed to raise funds for brain cancer research through the involvement of the craft beer industry. Another similar group, Pint for Prostates was formed to promote the importance of regular screenings for prostate cancer among men. Another group, with perhaps a less serious bent, but still dedicated to social causes is Beer Church. They have been around for

But its not just beer related charities that are important to these events. In fact, in Arizona, the only entity that is permitted to obtain the special event license required to host a festival like this is a registered non-profit organization. The law also requires that a minimum percentage of the proceeds go to that organization. So these charities are not just important for the work they do, but they are critical to the success of beer events that we all love to attend. In the case of this past weekend’s event, every penny raised, after actual expenses, went to benefit brain cancer research. Beer for Brains has no paid employees and no other substantial operating expenses. The beer was all donated and the Scottsdale Plaza Resort was very generous with their space and staff. This all allows a small charity to pull of an event and

raise decent money. When we say the beer was donated, it illustrates the importance of charities to individual breweries. Upon hearing of this event Alaskan Brewing immediately offered as much beer as was needed, as did several other breweries. Out of state breweries contacted the Foundation to make arrangements to provide beer. Two stories in particular stand out. Uncommon Brewers in Santa Cruz, California offered to donate two kegs, and had to make an hour plus drive from their brewery to deliver the beer to a shipping location, with just two hours notice. For good measure they through on a third keg, and flew to Arizona to personally serve their beer…all on their own dime. Founders Brewing Company in Michigan offered to donate a keg several months ago. However due to some personal issues, arrangements were never made to get the keg to the shipping location. That didn’t bother them…on the Wednesday before the event they wrapped up a keg in a box and shipped it via a two day delivery service…again, all at their expense. These are just a couple of examples of how brewers give back to the community. AZ Weekly could devote an entire issue to the impact of Continued on Page 27...

the brewing community on charities, and maybe some day we will. Suffice to say, for now, that many charities receive much in terms of dollars and exposure because of the efforts of the beer industry. If I had to put a number on the amount raised for charity over the past twelve months in Arizona alone, through beer related events, that number would be well over one million dollars. Not too shabby for a group of beer drinkers.

Anyway, I promised you short (I didn’t promise good) and this it was. Hopefully, there is enough here to get you thinking about all the good work the beer industry does for other people and how supportive they are of charitable works. So the next time you are shelling out for a ticket to some event, remember, you’re not just paying for your experience, you are paying too help make someone else’s, someone you will probably never meet, a little better.

One More Reason to Home Brew- Spent Grain Cookies!

Imagine some cookies still warm from the oven- gooey, moist and sweet. One of the great perks of brewing your own beer is having left over ingredients that are great for other uses. As we know, essentially beer is made from four ingredients: water, malted grain, hops and yeast. In the process of making beer at home one typically has a few pounds of left over grain. The grain typically has a sweetness to it that makes it a great addition to many recipes where one would use grains like oats. 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup white sugar 1 cup packed brown sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 3 cups spent grain (put grains in the food processor for 2 minutes) 1 cup chocolate chips

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Directions Cream together butter, white sugar, and brown sugar. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon; stir into the creamed mixture. Mix in grains and chocolate chips. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets. Roll the dough into walnut sized balls, and place 2 inches apart on cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Sunday NASCAR Racing

12 p.m. on A ESPN On the 2-mile oval of Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., Jimmie Johnson began his unrelenting march to the 2009 Sprint Cup title with a victory in last year’s Pepsi 500. His win over Jeff Gordon in a three-lap sprint to the finish gave him the top spot in the Cup standings, a lead he would not relinquish. He returns today to defend his race title from the likes of Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick in what is now the Pepsi 400.

Monday NFL Football

5:30 p.m. on A ESPN In what some might consider a Super Bowl XLV preview, the Minnesota Vikings are at New Meadowlands Stadium to face the New York Jets. The Vikings offense, led by quarterback Brett Favre, will face a tough test in the ferocious Jets defense. Aside from the on-field matchup, there might be something of a revenge story line here. Favre played a disappointing 2008 season with the Jets before retiring a second time. He then unretired and joined the Vikes in ’09.

I know hearing the phrase “bike festival” doesn’t exactly sound thrilling but let me tell you why it should. This is no bike race with helmets, and all things neon spandex. On the contrary it is a celebration of life, freedom, and human induced transportation. This traveling circus of sorts brings an important message reminding us that there are better ways for the world and for our bodies to be mobile and not attached to our cars. Participants take this message to heart and come in their alter ego best as super heros, characters, and overall wackiness; riding their decorated bikes, scooters, and pedal-powered cruisers. After this parade of cycling wonder, the Tempe Beach park will continue the celebration with entertainment, music and delicious beer provided by New Belgium Brewing Company, I can taste the Fat Tire already. This is a free event and all your donations go to environmental charities and New Belgium takes none! It’s their way of helping the world so let’s get on the band wagon-or in this case, bike wagon. 8:30am-5pm at Tempe Town Lake.

THE BEST TEQUILA BARS! Sponsored by Cruz Tequila

TEQUILA A mysterious name The liquor takes its name from the Tequila Valley, but where the name comes from? Well that’s a mystery; some say that the name Tequila comes from the Nahuatl dialect words tequilt (work, job, duty, task) and tlan (place). If not, it’s certainly a wonderful gift to enjoy after the job, duty or task itself comes to an end.

Cave Creek visitors and locals alike have a new restaurant and watering hole to call home. The Cave Creek Smokehouse & Pour House Patio, 6245 East Cave Creek Rd., has opened in Frontier Town in the heart of beautiful Cave Creek, AZ.

Creek to dine, such as ribs, brisket, pulled pork and hardy burgers. However, The Cave Creek Smokehouse & Pour House Patio brings new and edgy offerings: Smoked Brisket Lasagna? Out of this world! Chicken Chipotle Pasta? Truly the spice of life!

Many will remember it as the home of Crazy Ed’s Satisfied Frog, which closed in 2008. The location has gone through several owners and a name change that while somewhat typical of quirky Cave Creek has lead to confusion among patrons.

The Pour House Patio features an outdoor, covered bar, a great stage for live music, televisions, and plenty of tabled seating. Bring the gang to watch your favorite teams compete then stay for live music throughout the weekend featuring great regional talent. For those requiring a location for private events, The Smokehouse features a secluded event area, accommodating over 300 people, including a stage, water features, covered and patio seating, as well as a full bar.

The menu features favorite dishes visitors seek when coming to Cave

Media Link: “Punisher: War Zone” airs Friday, Oct. 15, on Showtime. The 10-year-old “Medal of Honor” franchise has always focused on the battles of the past with a high level of authenticity and detail. The stories found within each singleplayer adventure oozed excitement and edge-of-your-seat action while bringing every moment of the World Wars to life. Now, as player tastes change and the market has become more and more saturated with titles focusing on the Axis and Allies, EA Games has decided to take the war to a new battlefield and a new era. As a Tier 1 Operator, you are the best of the best at what you do. When a mission can’t be accomplished through normal military means, these elite soldiers, under the direct command of Special Operations, step in to get the job done. These very specific and very deadly talents are now needed in Afghanistan, where a new enemy has surfaced and is threatening life as we know it. “Medal of Honor” is a first-person shooter that places you in the very dangerous shoes of a Tier 1 Operator as you blast your way across the highly detailed terrain of the Middle East. The fine folks at EALA have crafted a single-player adventure that packs all the thrills found in previous “Medal of Honor” titles into a modern setting, bringing both weapons and equipment into the present. These implements of destruction include many of the advanced firearms and vehicles, such as the M21 sniping rifle and M3A3 Bradley tank, used by today’s fighting forces. While many people will enjoy the epic battles that play out in the single-player campaign, everyone knows that the fun really starts when you take the fight online.

Jason Thompson stars as Dr. Patrick Drake in ‘General Hospital’ weekdays on ABC.

ALL MY CHILDREN Tad and Colby congratulated Damon on getting his GED, and LIza offered him a job as an assistant in her law firm. Annie blew up at JR for keeping Scott from returning in time for the party, and her anger turned to passion. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Still reeling from Rick’s proposal, Jackie reminded him she was happily married to Owen. Rick explained how he and Jackie could benefit from being a couple. Oliver apologized to Hope and asked for another chance, but she told him she was with Liam now. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Gabi and Arianna interrupted Sami and Rafe as she was about to tell him she shot EJ. Afterward, Rafe told her he didn’t want her to tell him. EJ told Roman he couldn’t remember the shooting, explaining to Stefano that he didn’t want Sydney’s kidnapping to come up. He told Stefano he planned to use Arianna to find proof that Sami or Will shot him. GENERAL HOSPITAL Patrick stopped Lisa from committing suicide and arranged for her to go to Shadybrook. Robin told Patrick she didn’t want to take him back and got conflicting advice from Mac, and Maxie. Brenda and Sonny kissed, but Brenda begged Jason to help her stay away from him. ONE LIFE TO LIVE Blair suspected Todd’s mind was playing tricks on him when he claimed he got a call from Tea. Ross arrived to take Dani to Tahiti, but she was gone. James confided to Ford that he was hiding her. Echo returned to Llanview and told Viki she wanted a job at the Banner. John found Greg near death after Eli injected him with a deadly drug. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Jack admitted to Phyllis that he’d been setting her up. Adam tried to explain to Sharon what happened between him and Skye, but she wanted nothing to do with him. Kevin demanded that Gloria tell him more about the gambling ring. Chloe lost it when Kevin teased her at the harvest festival because he reminded her of Chance.

The Sugababes are launching a fashion range. The girl band - made up of Heidi Range, Jade Ewen and Amelle Berrabah are bringing out their own clothing line hot on the heels of their perfume last month. “We’ve just brought out our perfume and, yeah, we have something coming out soon, basically a fashion range,” said Jade. “We’re excited about it! All the details will be confirmed soon.” The groups are the latest in a long line of pop stars to have their own clothing

Eva Longoria Parker thinks her perfume is the perfect way to attract a man.

She said: “He loves it. He also is not a very big fan of overpowering scents and so he loves it because this one is really light and subtle.”

The ‘Desperate Housewives’ star launched her debut fragrance, Eva by Eva Longoria, in April, and believes men all over the world will love the scent and want their partners to wear it all the time. She told TV show ET Canada: “I want him to devour the woman that’s smelling my fragrance. If he smells my fragrance he should jump on that woman.”

Victoria Beckham is to donate items of her clothing to raise money for cancer victims. The British fashionista - along with other highprofile stars, including Stella McCartney, Sienna Miller and Elizabeth Hurley, hopes to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign by giving a selection of one-off pieces of her wardrobe to a new eBay initiative. Celebrity Boutique will allow fashion fans to purchase unique items of clothing that once belonged to stars, and many of which were worn to public events.

The former Spice Girl is to give away a piece from her own fashion collection, which she wore to a family meal at London’s exclusive Claridge’s hotel following her first ever in-store showcase at Selfridges department store.

Occasionally a larger woman makes it to TV, though in the land of size double-zero, a size 12 is considered huge. In CBS’ Monday comedy “Mike & Molly,” Molly (Melissa McCarthy) is smart, funny and pretty, and Mike (Billy Gardell), also obese, wants her. “Drop Dead Diva” has Brooke Elliott, but she wasn’t initially the object of desire. Elliott is smaller, and her character is a lawyer, which gave costumers more leeway. Molly is big and beautiful. She’s also a fourth-grade teacher, which means she doesn’t have much money to blow on clothes, and what she buys must be washable. “We have to stay in a realistic price,” McCarthy says. “How am I going to pay, as I walk out with a Marc Jacobs bag? I am wearing clothes Molly would actually buy.” Costume designer Simon Tuke, who was brought in because of his work on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” shops for the most part where Molly would. He finds clothes at Target, JCPenney, Macy’s and Lane Bryant. He has also shopped at the more upscale Saks and Bloomingdales.
