The Stanley Clarke Band Featuring Hiromi to Perform Scottsdale Center for the Arts

instruments: the tenor bass and piccolo bass.

Saturday, Oct 23, 8pm

Who’s that girl that JazzTimes describes as the “fleet-fingered female Jerry Lee Lewis?” At first we see her as a wild woman who hunches over the piano, hair flying. But quickly we find that Hiromi is one of the most captivating jazz pianists in the world today, with astounding technique. She is “extravagantly dynamic ... a forceful presence on any stage.” (The New York Times)

Watch these jazz titans, each with equal fire and power, as they take you on a sonic soundscape, from “acoustic sighs of bowed bass to rockthe-housedown electric jazz” (The Jazz Kitchen).

BROADWAY PALM DINNER THEATRE PRESENTS THE “SOME LIKE IT HOT” MUSICAL…SUGAR! ALL ABOARD… for some zany madcap comedy fun! The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre presents the hilarious musical comedy Sugar, playing now through November 13, 2010. Based on the greatest American film comedy of all time, Some Like It Hot, Sugar will delight audiences with its madcap comedy and memorable musical numbers including “When You Meet a Girl in Chicago”, “The Beauty That Drives Men Mad”, “Penniless Bums”, “The Sun on My Face” and “Beautiful Through and Through”. Joe and Jerry, two zany musicians down on their luck in 1920’s Chicago, unwittingly witness a gang rub-out in the Clark Street Garage ordered by Spats Palazzo, a notorious Chicago hood. Spats and his boys immediately chase after Joe and Jerry, determined to silence them as witnesses to the crime. Desperate for a quick way out of town, Joe and Jerry hear about jobs available for a saxophone and a bass player, which are their specialties. And coincidently,

the band is scheduled to leave at once for Florida. There is only one problem; the band is all female. As Joe and Jerry they haven’t got a chance, but with a bit of costuming, padding and makeup they become Josephine and Daphne. They are hired by “Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopators” and the fun begins! Sugar first opened at the Majestic Theater in 1972, earning four Tony Award nominations. It features a score by composer Jule Styne and lyricist Bob Merrill (“Gypsy,” “Funny Girl”), with a book by Peter Stone. Directed by M. Seth Reines, Sugar

features Mike Dale and Ben Martin as the musicians, “Joe” and “Jerry”, Bonnie McBride as “Sugar” and Andy Kopec as “Sir Osgood Fielding”, the confused millionaire. “Spats Palazzo”, the tap dancing bootleg kingpin, is played by John Wagner,

Nick@ Night By Nick Connell SUGAR at The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa. The Prather Entertainment family opened their 10th Anniversary Season with a red carpet affair featuring the hit musical SUGAR! This show is the reinterpretation of the 60’s film, Some Like It Hot, with Marilyn, Tony (God rest his soul) Curtis and Jack Lemmon. But this show is ripe with some new stars strutting there stuff in a musical comedy that has more fun than a drag queen in Cabaret! It’s 1931 Chicago, Joe (played by Mike Dale) must become Josephine - and Jerry (played by Ben Martin) must become Daphne to save their hides from the mob who wants to knock’em off for witnessing a hit. It’s off to Miami for these ‘Penniless Bums” with a live girl band, featuring the men in stride, and the stunning performer SUGAR, played gorgeously by Bonnie McBride. These three cohorts lead us on a funny trail of beaches, nightclubs and hotels made for laughs and love! Bring in a millionaire bachelor (played by Andy Kopec as Sir Osgood)

to chase the talent around, and you have a “Magic Night” of entertainment. The rest of the cast and orchestra is charming and energetic with songs and tap dancing galore making the opening weekend audience love “Doin’ it for Sugar”! Through Nov.13th-Tickets 480-325-6700 or BroadwayPalmWest.com BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS at Arizona Theatre Company, Phoenix. Say it ain’t so Ginger, say it ain’t so! Arizona Theatre Company opened their new season with a co-production of The Ginger Musical, BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS. Please understand I love musical films and theatre - Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers, Gene Kelly and many more great performers of this genre and bygone era. But doing a musical covering the life and times of a self-absorbed narcisstic personality with an ego the size of downtown Phoenix is quite another. BACKWARDS is a fine production, with musical soundtrack credits worth hearing again and again. There’s “Fascinating Rhythms” in every act and a “Fine Romance” at every turn - even a cheer me on protagonist ready

to “Pick Yourself” up and go again. But somewhere, someone fell in love with a cute little “Baby Face”, and forgot that their heroine was really a passive aggressive ice queen from hell (and this fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree). Maybe everyone was starving for a diversion from the American nightmare here, realizing they “Weren’t in the Money”. Top it off by bestowing an academy award on their darling Jezebel, surfacing her way through empty relationships, and presto, mama still loves me? Hard to watch - harder to believe. Say it isn’t so Ginger?! However, enjoy the professional dominant and petulant performance of Anna Aimee White as Ginger Rodgers, and Heather Lee as the pain-ridden Lela. Rounding out an all-star cast is Christianne Tisdale, Matthew LaBanca, Benjie Randall and James Petterson. Kudos to the band as well, who were exquisite all night with music that was off the charts! But that’s what keeps them coming back…The Music. Through Oct. 24th-Tickets 602-256-6995 or ArizonaTheatre.org BREAK A LEG !

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Mike Myers has signed on to voice Pepe Le Pew in a new feature-length film that combines live-action and computergenerated animation. The project is one of several on which Warner Bros. Pictures is working to bring new life to its Looney Tunes characters. Be among the first to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com, where you can also read about Disney’s plans to reinvigorate a classic character of their own.

Festival to thrill Valley horrorholics and sci-fi fans By Joseph J. Airdo Halloween is still more than two weeks away but this weekend aliens, demons and RoboGeishas will invade Mill Avenue in Tempe. Now in its sixth year, The International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival will run Thursday, Oct. 14-Sunday, Oct. 17

at Madcap Theaters, 730 S. Mill Ave. More than 50 films will be screened over the course of the event, which was programmed by venue owner Andrea Beesley-Brown. Beesley-Brown says Madcap is the perfect haven for the festival not only because the theater features quirky horror and sci-fi films year-round but also because it does not have all of the other programming commitments of most regular movie venues. “We can really do a lot of fun events and utilize the space in a really good way,” Beesley-Brown explains. “It gives the ability for the festival to kind of take over for a few days.” As in previous years, the festival will include parties, a “Gore Girl” competition, a “Beat the Geek” contest and exclusive discussions with filmmakers. This year’s special events include a special showing of the classic horror film “Suspiria,” the Arizona premiere of the futuristic sci-fi anime thriller “King of Thorn,” and the Arizona premiere of “RoboGeisha.” “Each year, I love to do a crazy Japanese film,” Beesley-Brown says of “RoboGeisha,” which is from the makers of “Tokyo Gore Police.” “It’s really exciting. really pumped for that.” This year’s opening night film is “Drones,” a sci-fi comedy directed by Adam Busch (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) in which a cubicle worker discovers an intergalactic secret about some of his coworkers. It stars Samm Levine (“Inglorious Basterds”), Jonathan Woodward (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and Angela Bettis (“May”). Busch, who also stars in the film, and producer Jordan Kessler, will be present for the showing 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14. This year’s closing night film is “Night of the Demons,” a horror in which seven friends attending a New Orleans Halloween party must try to avoid the possession of demons who want to break free of an ancient curse. It is a movie that BeesleyBrown attempted to program for last year’s festival but was unable to due to technical difficulties. “Night of the Demons” stars Edward Furlong (“Detroit Rock City”), Shannon Elizabeth (“American Pie”), Monica Keena (“Freddy vs. Jason”) and Bobbi Sue Luther (“The Poughkeepsie Tapes”). Valley scream-queen Tiffany Shepis also appears in the film and will be present for the showing 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17. In addition, the Phoenix Film Foundation will induct two more masters of horror and sci-fi into the festival’s Hall of Fame, which honors those individuals who have embraced the genres throughout most of their working careers. This year’s inductees are Charles Cyphers and Lance Henriksen, both of whom will be present for screenings of their respective films “The Fog” and “Aliens.” Tickets for the 6th Annual International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival start at $10 for single showings. Flex passes granting access to four films are $30 while VIP full festival passes are $99, with discounts available for students and seniors. Visit www.horrorscifi.com or call 602-955-6444.

Karl Urban Talks About Red and His Career By Randy Montgomery New Zealand native Karl Urban stars opposite Bruce Willis in the new action/comedy Red, based on the DC Comic graphic novel. The actor got his start in his native country performing in theatre, television and film. “One of the benefits of starting my career in New Zealand,” says Urban. “is that it’s such a small industry, you

Review by Stan Robinson The theme set by 2009’s ‘District 9’ is revisited. Six years after a probe sent to collect alien life samples crashed upon reentry in Central America, half of Mexico was quarantined as an ‘Infected Zone’. A cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone to the safety of the US border. Starring Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy. * 3 of 5 stars

have to work in all mediums to get experience. Consequently, it produces a better caliber of actor.” Urban has appeared in the latest big screen version of Star Trek, The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles of Riddick, LOTR: Return of the King and LOTR: The Two Towers. In Red, Urban takes on the role of William Cooper, a CIA agent sent to track down and kill ex-agent Frank Moses (Willis), who the agency believes holds dangerous secrets. The film co-stars Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren. Urban explains his experience with Willis, “We had a great time working on this. He’s a great collaborator. He’s done over 60 films. He brings experience to the table.” The role involved numerous stunts and quite a bit of preparation, which involved “Reading every book that Robert Bear wrote. He was an ex-CIA officer. I had the good fortune sitting down with him and talking about his experience in the company.” Urban also went through weapons training. In addition, “Bruce and I trained for three weeks for the fight scene, which was filmed over ten days.” In terms of the numerous stunts Urban’s character performs, he did as many as he could. “It was pretty tricky, a few camera tricks here and there, but it was a bit easier than I thought it would be.” An upside to all the hard work was sharing the screen with a Hollywood legend, “Getting to work with Ernest Borgnine was awesome,” says Urban. “He is 93 years old and he came in and put in a full days work, sharp as a tack; listening to him tell stories about the golden age of Hollywood in the 40s and 50s.” In terms of the movie itself, “The graphic

novel is a lot darker in tone and actually only represents the first act of our film. The (writing team) did a fantastic job developing that world, turning a serious graphic novel into a good comedic romp.” The end result paid off. “I was fortunate to see the film with an audience in Austin, Texas. It was a gratifying experience. They laughed their butts off. I like to know what the finished cut is like. But to me, the joy is in the process of making the film.” Creating a worthy product and working with great talent really sums up Urban’s philosophy, “My goal, my destination is not important to me. What is important is the journey, who I get to work with, the places I get to go and sharing time with my family.”

Now Playing! ‘Red’ Veteran actors deliver seasoned spies! Review by Stan Robinson From the trailers, one may get the thought ‘Red’ is action driven. As star Bruce Willis says “It’s not just action, its action, romance, and comedy all woven together into one story which is a lot more ambitious than just blowing stuff up!” Based on the D.C. Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer, when his ideal retired life is targeted by a high-tech assassin, former CIA covert agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) reassembles his former retired team of operatives to break into the top secret CIA headquarters and uncover one of the biggest conspiracies and cover-ups in government history! Starring Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Dreyfuss, Brian Cox, James Remar, John Malkovich, Rebecca Pidgeon, Michelle Nolden, and Karl Urban. * 4 ½ of 5 stars

‘Ghetto Physics’ Don’t let the title throw you!

Review by Stan Robinson Substitute the words ‘pack’, ‘herd’, or ‘society’ for ghetto in the title and you’ll have the essence of the theme. Writer/directors William Arntz & E. Raymond Brown present a blend of documentary, satire, and narrative filmmaking as they examine the power dynamic that exists in social, political, and corporate relationships. The film includes interviews with notable entertainers and thinkers, such as Dr. Cornel West, Ice-T, KRS-One, Too Short, John Perkins, Cynthia McKinney, William H. Arntz (co-director) and Norman Lear, as well as street characters with names like Filmore Slim, Hook da Crook, Mac Breed and Lo Da Show. * 3 ½ of 5 stars * Stan Robinson’s full reviews are available at www.ScreenScene.org ‘Jackass 3D’ The familiar cast returns for this third installment featuring more of the unlikeliest outrageous stunts and pranks, in 3D!

A remake of the 1988 cult classic keeps the terror going, as a New Orleans mansion becomes the setting of a Halloween party that gets way out of hand ... several times over. First, police descend on the place and clear it out. Then several teenagers who stay behind are immersed in a battle with soul-snatching demons. Shannon Elizabeth, Edward Furlong, Monica Keena and genre staple Linnea Quigley are among the stars. James McDaniel OF

ON ABC

James McDaniel projects stability, which is why he’s frequently cast as a cop, as he is on ABC’s Tuesday cop show “Detroit 1-8-7.” As solid an actor as he is, some of that feeling comes across because that’s who he is. McDaniel has been married for 30 years, raised two sons and has lived in Harlem since 1985. That last fact is important to him and to his affinity with this new show set in Detroit. “I love Detroit,” he says. “I was pushing for this to happen. It’s the most incredible backdrop. It is a city in distress. It’s this strange juxtaposition. It’s the fourth-largest port in the world. There is so much happening there and the architecture – starting with the turn-of-the-century houses. Every house is different, and every third house is boarded up – five-bedroom mansions the likes of which L.A. has never seen.” As a Washington, D.C., native and a New Yorker by choice, McDaniel is no stranger to cities in need. “I understand what it is to be in a city that has bad PR working,” he says. He’s hoping the show does well for the good of the city as well as his career. “If we are successful, we can train people,” McDaniel says of potential film crews. He relates to his character, Sgt. Jesse Longford. “He’s been on the job for 25 years as a detective, in a town that has gone through this many changes,” McDaniel says. “And he still loves the city. He’s the guy in the squad car that can tell you his remembrances.” Among McDaniel’s remembrances is that he considered becoming a vet and loved riding horses. “I figured medicine and large animals, I would be building a rural lifestyle,” he says. “And I have no interest in living on a farm and stepping on cow patties.”

Another opening, another show ... but this time, the show leaves the Great White Way for 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The recurring PBS series “In Performance at the White House” has become known for themed programs that span a wide range of music, and Broadway gets its due in a new telecast Wednesday, Oct. 20. Recorded in July, the episode takes such talents as Idina Menzel (“Wicked”), Nathan Lane and Elaine Stritch to Washington, D.C. With President and Mrs. Obama in attendance, the George C. Wolfe-directed offering includes stage-based song standards from “Blue Skies” to “What I Did for Love” (rendered by Menzel, and also sung by Lea Michele in the season premiere of Fox’s “Glee,” on which Menzel has appeared).

BEER! SECTION

BEER! A few months back I wrote about beer and baseball to mark the beginning of the season. As the season winds down and we are in to the playoffs, it got me thinking about the celebrations we see after every milestone. The scene is always the same, a plastic coated locker room and guys dumping champagne all over the place. Despite the importance of beer to baseball, as previously discussed, I am okay with this practice. Better to waste fizzy grape juice than perfectly good beer. Anyway, I am certain that when push comes to shove, the players are celebrating by drinking beer rather than champagne. Regardless, beer is the nectar of celebrations. Beer and celebrations have gone together forever. We can look back further, but it was no accident that the first Oktoberfest, a celebration of a wedding, had beer as its feature beverage. St. Patrick’s Day also is a big day to celebrate with beer. Sure, whiskey has its place on March 17th, but it was Left Hand Milk Stout flowing out of the nitrogen taps at Tavern on Mill this past year. As an aside, try yourself an Irish Car Bomb sometime with milk stout sometime, it’s a whole different kind of treat. But as usual, I digress… the point is, just about every big celebration calls for beer, and most of the little ones as well. What do you do after winning a big softball game, or bowling match, or 10k race? That’s right, off for a beer to cel-

24

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” ebrate your victory. Although truth be told, it is perfectly acceptable to drown your sorrows with a beer if you are on the wrong end of the victory column at any event as well. A simple celebration might call for a group to go to the local bar and treat themselves to a good beer. Something like Bell’s Two Hearted or Big Sky Moose Drool, or for you ASU fans out there, might we suggest a Devil’s Ale from SanTan. Depending on where you are at, you might pop in to the local brewpub so maybe it’s Sun Up, Papago, or Thunder Canyon (if you happen to be celebrating a Wildcat victory in Tucson). And what better way to celebrate the magnificence of the Grand Canyon than with a beer from the brewery that bears the same name? But what about bigger celebrations? What about those events that call for the next level of beer? Fortunately, I have a beer cellar with a nice selection of aged beers for just such occasions. But if you haven’t usurped a large portion of your closet space for beer there are still options. To celebrate a great day at work, perhaps you want to sit down and finish the night off with a snifter full of fine barleywine such as North Coast Old Stock, or the tingly effervescence of one of Redstone Meadery’s fruit flavored nectars. If it’s a really nice celebration, break out something rare. One of Avery’s anniversary ales will do the trick, as will a thimbleful of Sonoran Brewing’s 200, which coincidentally they created to celebrate their 200th batch of beer. At over 19% ABV, a thimbleful of this agave based still beer is all you will need. Stepping it up another notch on the celebratory scale? No problem, let’s travel overseas and break out some Belgian beers. If you’re not a regular Belgian drinker, then pop the cork on a bottle of Tripel Karmeliet or Saison Dupont to start a celebration. These cork and caged beers give you the same enjoyment of popping the cork that champagne does, and they are a heck of a lot cheaper besides. If you like something a little bolder, try some Gulden Draak or open up a real lambic, something from Cantillon or Drie Fonteinen will

October 14th, 2010 - October 20th, 2010

do nicely. There is a large variety of great Belgian beer out there, and just about all are appropriate for celebration, and they have the added advantage of being available in 750 ml bottles so you can share if you are so inclined. If it’s a wedding you are celebrating, then pull out all the stops. If it’s your wedding, treat yourself to a keg of great beer to be served at the reception, most halls will work with you to bring in something special. After the Oktoberfest, perhaps one of the best stories of beer and weddings is that of Urthel Samaranth. When owners Hildegaard and Bas Van Ostaden got married, there was no need for a cake. Sitting in the middle of the floor, where the cake would normally be, was a keg of a special beer that Hildegaard brewed just for the wedding celebration. The beer was so popular at the wedding, they decided to make it a part of the everyday lineup of Urthel beers so have a few of those on hand. Better yet, if you are providing your own facility for the celebration, one where you don’t have to worry about the liquor license, have a friend that homebrews make you something special, your very own wedding beer. Of course champagne is traditional for the toast at a wedding as it is at many other times of occasion, times when

men and women dress regally and act formally. Is there a beer that will stand up to this type of celebration? Of course there is. The best bet here is to celebrate with bottles of Deus from Bosteels in the Flemish region of Belgium. Deus is quite literally a champagne beer. It is initially produced in the manner of a traditional Belgian beer, but at some point champagne yeast is introduced and the beer is sent off to a cellar in Champagne, France where it undergoes the traditional methode champenoise production methods. The process is quite long and it involves words like riddling and disgorgement, you can look it up if you like, but we can only provide so much education here. Anyway, after months of storage and careful handling, Deus is ready to be consumed. Serve this amazing beer just as you would champagne and you will have a special treat for your special celebration. The ultimate point is that any celebration should have beer involved. It is the drink of celebration. It is fun, lively, and available at any price point for any celebration. Next time you have something special to celebrate, think carefully about your beverage of choice and find a nice beer, something a notch or two above what you normally drink and let that beer be part of your celebration.

What’s Hoppening Beer Bikes Banned After Court Rules None For The Road They have become a central part of many a stag weekend, allowing revellers to simultaneously drink and tour a city’s sights on wheels. But a German court has issued a clampdown on the bizarre contraptions which hail from the Netherlands but have become a particular hit in Germany, where they are offered to tourists in 34 different cities. Beer bikes, also known as “pedal pubs” or “mobile conference tables”, allow up to 16 drinkers to sit around a beer-barrel table, help themselves to on-tap beer, and listen to music while pedalling around

the city. They are steered by a nondrinker employed by the operator. The court in Düsseldorf issued the ban after complaints from other drivers about rowdiness. Complainants maintain that the bikes caused traffic jams, which intensified the longer a beer bike journey lasted – in effect, the more the revellers drank – and the more their pedal power tended to be reduced. Most popular on weekends and public holidays, groups of riders are restricted to a maximum of 10 litres (about 18 pints) of beer an hour, with regular toilet breaks built into the tours. Anyone who relieves him or herself in a public place is threatened with a fine. How would the city of Scottsdale respond? Cheers!

BEER! SECTION Beer Blend Trends

by Maureen Basenberg, Founder,

Arizona Girl’s Pint Out

Most of us are familiar with a Black & Tan, that classic combo of a stout and pale ale but there are many more ways to enjoy creations that blend beers and ciders. In fact, many local restaurants and breweries are picking up on this trend. For example, the new gastropub Spitfire Grill in Chandler offers numerous blends including Vanilla Porter and Crispin Cider, a drink they call Vanilla Crisp. The fun offerings don’t stop there. As pointed out by Beer PHXation a local blog dedicated to spreading the word about craft beer in the valley, other offerings include the King James- SanTan Brewing Epicenter IPA & Devils Ale available at The Hungry Monk in Chandler and Apple LagerApple Cider and Sleepy Dog Lager from Sleepy Dog Brewery in Tempe.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Additionally creating your own blends at home or at the pub can be a great way to leverage some of the favorite things we enjoy about craft beer, mead and cider. If all else fails start with a beer-mosa, just substitute beer for champagne in a traditional mimosa. Personally I recommend a beer with a citrus hop profile to enhance the citrus in the orange juice. Cheers! October 14th, 2010 - October 20th, 2010

Wow!!! With all the great pizza places in Phoenix, I was amazed to find this little gem. Florencia’s, originally started in Los Angeles, was a “mom and pop” place that eventually migrated to Sun City. This second generation parlor, started by Val and his wife Stefanie, carries on a tradition. Their dough is made fresh daily and topped with only the finest and freshest ingredients. I was amazed to see, that in spite of the crowd, the owner still takes the time to walk the floor. You can find him either at a table, talking with the patrons, or in the kitchen overseeing the making of a great pizza. Besides GREAT gourmet pizzas (over thirty different toppings), Florencia’s offers up a varied selection of calzones, paninis and bruschettas at really reasonable prices. His craft beer offerings include local breweries SanTan’s Devil’s Ale, Papago’s Orange Blossom and Odell’s IPA to name just a few. The craft beer bottle selection goes even further....we had to indulge in the New Belgium Ranger at $1.50 each. They open for lunch daily at 11AM and serve through dinner 7 days a week. Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiac was looking for a sign, something that would tell him his team was starting to grow up. His best players needed to play big when it counted most – be the difference maker, in the coach’s words – and Kubiac saw it, starting with his quarterback, Matt Schaub. In Week 2, the Texans rallied from a 17-point third-quarter deficit to beat the Washington Redskins in overtime on the strength of Schaub’s right arm. He threw for a franchise record 497 yards on 38 of 52 passing, including a 34-yard touchdown to Andre Johnson on fourth-and-10 to tie the score with 2:03 left in regulation. Schaub then set up the winning field goal with a 28-yard strike to Joel Dreessen.

Cage Fighter Feeling Stronger Than Ever at Age 50 Mixed Martial Arts is considered by most, a young man’s game. It’s a sport requiring speed, stamina, strength, endurance, and above all, the persistence and dedication to train day in and day out. To compete at such a high level, in such a demanding sport, takes a special talent indeed. And for one particularly unique 50 year old local athlete right here in the valley, the tank is full and all eyes are on the prize. A young man’s game… perhaps. Larry Robertson however, begs to differ. We are all familiar with the weekend warrior. The middle-aged dad who come the weekend can be found playing hardball with the boys, or perhaps hiking a nearby mountain at a furious pace. Larry however prefers to take things a bit further, training for and competing in what is arguably the toughest sport in the world today, full contact cage fighting, aka mixed martial arts. Sensibly enough, Larry admires most the accomplishments of UFC Hall of Famer Randy “The Natural” Couture, who has defied all odds finding tremendous success within the sport as he continues to compete still later in life. Having had plenty of success in his business and personal life, Larry continued to question his life’s purpose day in and day out, until realizing the same passions that burned deep within him during his wrestling days were still very much alive. He did not hesitate. Despite his age and those who stack the odds against him, he was determined to follow his gut and pursue the sport in which he loves. An inspiration to us all, particularly father’s across the valley who still reflect upon “the glory days of old”, he is truly the epitome of a man on a mission. A mission to know that the fire we all still have within, despite hard times in a tough economy, is at the very least acknowledged, and given the chance to evolve into something greater. And something greater he has found. Now with 5 wins and only 1 loss as a

professional mixed martial arts fighter, Larry continues to both teach and train rigorously for the sport he adores right here in Arizona at the Rage in the Cage Training Center. His Greco Roman Wrestling style, quite similar to that of former UFC Champion Randy Couture, has achieved him many honors throughout his career, earning him the title of 2X National Veterans Champion in both Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling competition.

LOCAL ATHLETE EMBRACING AGE INSIDE THE CAGE

The achievements he values most however come from seeing his kids succeed. The Physical Education teacher and Rage in the Cage wrestling instructor knows that power does not come through money and/or personal accolades, but through teaching the value of work ethic, passing on what he has learned to valley youth seeking to one day compete at a higher level themselves. If there’s anything in particular he attributes his success to, it’s most definitely the importance of his family and the people he surrounds himself with. “Jayne Robertson, and my daughters Taylor 11, Alex 17, and Haley 17, are my immediate support group,” he says. “They are every bit as important as my mma and cardio training etc. Because when the show is over, the lights dim and training for the next fight begins, they are there to support you, keep you grounded and give you the most important reason to be alive... family.” Larry has achieved much in life. However, his efforts as a competitor are not yet complete. He will be competing in Rage In The Cage at 205 lbs at The Gila River Wild Horse Pass Casino on October 15th, where he will face yet another solid opponent in Shawn O’Reilly. Larry, nicknamed “Who’s Your Daddy”, is the first to find humor in the wide range of feedback and reaction he receives inside the cage. His skills however are impressive indeed - and an army of fans continue to be in his corner. Embracing his age and following his very own dreams later in life has proven extremely enjoyable and rewarding. However, the ability to change thousands of kids’ lives through wrestling and MMA instruction is without a doubt the achievement he values most. Win or lose in the cage, Larry Robertson is clearly a hero in life. A true inspiration to us all.

The Youthful Larry Robertson Re-enters The Cage October 15th.

Big Ten contenders do battle at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison as the Wisconsin Badgers host Ohio State. The No. 2-ranked Buckeyes, led by quarterback Terrelle Pryor, face a tough road test against Wisconsin and its power running game featuring junior running back John Clay.

In the 1980s, Tim Richmond was a rising star in NASCAR, winning 13 races over eight seasons — seven alone in 1986. But when he missed the 1987 Daytona 500 with what was reported to be pneumonia, the diagnosis was in reality much more severe: AIDS.

TT Roadhouse Anniversary Party Sat Oct 16th

TT Roadhouse is a local favorite of all those that thrive on old school Punk, Ska and Rockability music. This cozy bar prides itself on its lack of “douchebagness” and the acceptance of all to have a good time. Pool tables, darts and an atmosphere of dark wood, motorcycle and beer memorabilia gives the bar a feel of drinking in someone’s man cave. The décor alone can entertain you for at least an hour. This place is having its one year anniversary which makes it the perfect time for a newbie to give it a go. There will be plenty of drink specials, giveaways and live music by Flathead. 10 beers are available on tap which gives It an extra point on my cool scale and “the best jukebox in AZ” full of classics is always appreciated. 9pm-2am 480.990.9033

Media Link: Ron Perlman, the narrator for the game, also stars in “Sons of Anarchy,” which airs Tuesdays on FX. Over the past 13 years, the “Fallout” franchise has proved to the gaming community that you don’t need wizards, castles and dragons to make a proper roleplaying game. The retrofuturistic style coupled with the incredible depth of gameplay made this post-apocalyptic adventure a downright thrilling experience. As time passed, the isometric- viewed, point-and-click interface and grainy graphics became obsolete, forcing an evolution of epic proportion. Enter “Fallout 3.” This journey into the next generation blended the creative style of the originals while advancing the gameplay, graphics and depth. Now, after spending two years at the top of the console RPG charts, Bethesda Game Studios is looking to re-create the magic with the latest in its atomic franchise, “Fallout: New Vegas.” Life in Vegas is hard. Life in the ultraviolent wasteland that is New Vegas is near impossible. But with the right mindset and skills, you just might just survive. As you make your way across the Mojave and what’s left of the Vegas Strip, you’ll encounter creatures, characters and crooks that want nothing more than to see you dead. The only way to prevent your demise is to think fast, watch your back and carry plenty of really big guns. If you know how to play your cards right, you might even do a little better than merely surviving. You could be the next King of New Vegas.

Peggy Olson from ‘Mad Men’ As the fourth season of AMC’s “Mad Men” draws to a close Sunday, Oct. 17, one of television’s most acclaimed costume designers, Janie Bryant, reflects on the look she helped popularize and a favorite character in Peggy (Elisabeth Moss). Bryant, at her Manhattan agent’s office, signs copies of “The Fashion File,” her book that hits the shelves next week. In it, she talks “about becoming your own leading lady and how to do that for your style and fashion,” she says. “And I talk a little bit about accessories and vintage pieces that can totally change your wardrobe; how to look for vintage; my style icons and inspiration; how to get the proper fitting bra and shapewear. And how to get a little crush on yourself.” She’s done just that with this cast whose styles reflect the sleek look of late 1950s and early ’60s Manhattan. Peggy, Bryant says, “is the most layered and interesting character on the show,” who has undergone the most changes in her life and as a logical result, in her wardrobe. Many of Peggy’s clothes are Bryant originals, and she also sews and re-works older outfits. She buys many from costume shops and vintage stores and from vintage dealers who serve only film and TV shows. Bryant also shops at local Los Angeles vintage shops Hubba Hubba, Jet Rag and Rose Bowl.
