While it’s easy to recognize John Lithgow for his famous roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment and Shrek, he is also a Tony Award-winning actor who feels as comfortable in front of a live audience as he does before a Hollywood camera. In his one-man theatrical tour-de-force, Stories by Heart, John Lithgow reveals the healing power of story-telling in theatrical tales that span three generations. Funny, suspenseful and disarming, Lithgow has mastered the art of the tale, flipping the mood in a moment while keeping you on the edge of your seat. His bravura storytelling finds him playing a dozen character roles in this production, simply yet

His selected tales of mischief-makers and tricksters are framed within the context of touching stories from his own family, including helping his ailing father to find his lost enthusiasm for life — a discovery that draws the evening together. See love turn a gang of pirates into a ship of fools. Love and duty have rarely been so funny. Frederic, a young pirate in Victorian England, spots Mabel and falls instantly in love. But when he attempts to leave his pirate crew for a life of respectability, the pirates remind him that he may be 21 – which marks the end of his apprenticeship - but his birthday is February 29th. Since he only has a birthday each leap year, they tell him, he must serve the pirates for 63 more years. Will duty-bound Frederic accept their terms? Or will the softhearted pirates let love conquer all? The fifth collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan, The Pirates of Penzance has been parodied, imitated and frequently revived, earning its place as one of the duo’s most popular operas. This season’s production is a treasure trove of humor, wit and irresistible performances. Sung in English with English supertitles. Call 602.266.7464 or visit www.azopera. com for more information. Nick@ Night By Nick Connell The fall season is in full swing with great shows to be experienced and enjoyed all over town. Here are this week’s recommendations and reviews: THE LAST FIVE YEARS Class 6 Theatre at Mesa Arts Center The Award-Winning Musical the Last Five Years opened this weekend at the Mesa Arts Center. This dynamic and touching story of two artists making their way through careers, a relationship, and finally marriage is full of great songs and performances by Pete Good as Jamie and Sarah Hayes as Cathy. Also making this show an excellent musical experience is a live band featuring Jessica Brooksby, Mathew Smith, Jennifer McConaghie and Bill Bellamark playing Jason Robert Brown’s complete score. This is a funny, heart-wrenching and witty story worth every scene and song! Hurry though, it only runs through October 24th! 480-644-6500 or Class6Theatre.org. A VAMPIRE TALE Scorpius Dance Theatre at Phoenix Little Theatre Just in time for the Halloween season is an encore performance and evolving production of Lisa Starry’s A Vampire Tale. Lisa has made this production even more inventive, intriguing and provocative with a new film intro produced by Joe Rawlins, Kane Black and Webb Pickersgill; a live music performance of “Black Hole Sun” performed by Adam Smith: more cute and funny antics by that “Strange Man” Eric Boudreau: and of course the Klan starring David Starry as “The Watcher”, Nicole Olson Johnson as ‘The Queen of the Clan”, Christina Sheldon as “The Forlorn Girl” and James Marinaro as Klan and Aerial. You’ll love the new aerial movements, characters from the new Klan, with gothic and inventive dramas making this the best Vampire Tale ever! Plus, they just added another two more performances for Friday and Saturday Oct.29-30th-Halloween weekend. Call 602-254-2151 for tickets or ScorpiusDance.com BILL W. and DR. BOB The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa. Tom Prather and the Prather Entertainment Group have brought back the successful and popular true story drama, Bill W. and Dr. Bob to The Broadway Palm Marquee Theatre. This hit show returns with a new twist in the cast as Matt Zimmerer stars as the venerable Bill W, opposite Richard Springle as Dr. Bob. The chemistry is electric and intense with these two hopeless drunks as they trip into the cure for alcoholism. This production is an inspiration full of hope, laughter and a blessing for all. Through Nov. 7th Call 480-325-6700 for tickets or BroadwayPalmWest.com THE COLOR PURPLE visited Phoenix last week in a touring production presented by the Theater League, Phoenix Entertainment and Joyful Noisemakers Stephen Kane and Michael McFadden. This was the best show I’ve seen so far this year and lifted the roof off the Mesa Arts Center! Many thanks go out to those who brought this fantastic hit show to our community! And last, but certainly not the least, KUDOS again go out to the MIM for presenting the touching vocals and instrumental varieties of THE ROSE ENSEMBLE last week. This concert exploring the Life and Deeds of Saint Francis of Assisi in music was a sacred experience for the ages. Gratsi! BREAK A LEG! AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Walden Media and 20th Century Fox are teaming up to produce a liveaction feature-length motion picture based on Bil Keane’s syndicated comic strip “The Family Circus.” The script for the family flick, which is seen to have the potential of a franchise, will be penned by Bob Hilgenberg and Rob Muir (“Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue”). Fox has also scored the film rights to an untitled project based around the music of the Beach Boys. Similar to the ABBA-inspired musical “Mama Mia,” the movie will be a fictional story that uses the band’s music weaved into a narrative story. John Stamos will produce along with Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (“Hairspray”). Finally, in casting news, Kate Beckinsale has officially agreed to reprise her role as vampire heroine Selene in a fourth installment of Screen Gems’s “Underworld” franchise while Rhys Ifans has signed on to play the yet-tobe-revealed villain in Sony’s “SpiderMan” reboot and Natalie Portman is being pursued to star in Ridley Scott’s “Alien” prequel.

Reviewers’ Roundup: ‘Knucklehead’ In “Knucklehead,” Mark Feuerstein plays a con-artist named Eddie Sullivan who, after incurring a large debt with a local bookie (Dennis Farina), creates a get-rich-quick scheme by enlisting a gentle giant named Walter (Paul “The Big Show” Wight) - an adult orphan - to enter a series of small, unsanctioned fighting competitions. During their journey across the south to the annual Pro-Am MMA tournament in New Orleans, Walter discovers what life is like outside the orphanage while Eddie becomes conflicted over whether to take all the loot for himself or keep his promise to

The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “Sometimes the greatest tale tales are ones that relish in absurdity. Continuing its plan to produce smaller, family-friendly fare, WWE Studios brings a fantastic fairy tale to life with ‘Knucklehead.’ The movie is a quirky little comedy with a big heart, entertaining audiences of all ages with a goofball sense of humor and an uplifting story to which we can all relate.” Grade: B Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “Farfetched scenarios have a way of grounding themselves in the reality of the moments. ‘Knucklehead’ has a lot of those moments, with ‘offthe-wall’ comedy setups while all the while reinforcing the messages. Its all-around family entertainment, and as this reviewer discovered, one doesn’t have to be a ‘Knucklehead’ to enjoy it!” Grade: C+

‘Conviction’ ~ an exceptional true story of love & dedication! Review by Stan Robinson This is one of those films as the ending unfolds, the emotional aspects for those of us who have siblings, absolutely understand and feel the love and commitment we have, against all odds, for our brothers and sisters… It’s 1983 in Ayer, Massachusetts. Betty Ann Waters (Hilary Swank) an unemployed single mother of two boys after her marriage comes to a very rough end. As if things couldn’t get any worst, she and her brother Kenneth (Sam Rockwell) are very close and deep down know each very well since they were pretty left to their own while growing up, is

accused, arrested, tried, and convicted of the robbery and murder of a woman living in a trailer next door to him. As the trial ends and is lead from the courtroom with a life sentence, Betty yells to him, with every fiber of her heart and soul, she will never give up to prove him innocent. As time goes by, Kenneth’s ability to appeal his conviction using public defenders has been exhausted and without a lawyer, he will die in prison. That is when Betty Anne decides to dedicate her life to save her brother. … Absolutely convinced that he was innocent, Betty spends the next 12 years taking steps to earn a law degree, getting her GED, continuing her education while working. In 1995 with a law degree in hand, she began focusing on her brother’s case. Challenging the conviction with DNA evidence, with the help of a fellow law school student (Minnie Driver) who’s now a lawyer as well and the Innocence Project, she proved her brother’s innocence, and Kenneth Waters walked out of prison a free man in March 2001 after 18 years! 4 ½ of 5 stars There’s a lot more at www.ScreenScene.org as I share insight on Hilary Swank who has an actor’s true ability to shed her own persona physically and emotionally to present onscreen characters of living or past lived persons; Sam Rockwell fresh off stunning performances in 2009’s ‘Moon’ and ‘Iron Man 2’ (2010); and my adding ‘Conviction’ to my ‘Must see’ list of 2010 with Hilary Swank on my list of Best Actresses!

the publication of his poem ‘Howl’. Presented with three interwoven themes, the movie gives views of events that led young Ginsberg to find his calling as an artist, society’s reaction to the obscenity trial, and a surrealistic view of the depth of the poem. Collectively the themes give a ‘time capsule’ view of the emergence of the 1960’s ‘decade of change’.

‘Stone’ ~ Compelling performances, first-rate psychological drama! Review by Stan Robinson Simplistically, the description for ‘Stone’ has an ordinary overall theme that we’ve visited multiple times throughout cinematic history. The theme of one person as the target with a pair, in this case, a man and a woman, with the prime mission of coercing that target to do their will. In most cases, it’s a physical means. In this case, it’s mental psychological entrapment… A convicted arsonist (Edward Norton) with a long history of in and out of prison throughout his life, sets in motion a plan to psychologically manipulate a cynical and ‘by-the-book’ parole officer (Robert De Niro) into securing his parole from his latest stay in prison, by placing his beautiful wife (Milla Jovovich) right square in the middle of the long-time parole officer’s path. Early on as the story progress, we get the keen sense that although the couple may of the opposite sex, they are an absolute match in their mental awareness and analytical capabilities of sizing up persons they come in contact with. 4 of 5 stars Edward Norton delivers a character unlike any we’ve experienced for his

Robert De Niro presents the staunch unrelenting parole officer at the onset, which by the ending is completely under the couples’ control, in seasoned veteran style as only De Niro can deliver!

‘Paranormal Activity 2’ By Joseph J. Airdo

‘Hereafter’ By Stan Robinson Oscar® winners actor Matt Damon (with ‘True Grit’ just completed) and director Clint Eastwood, who teamed for last year’s ‘Invictus’ reunite with the added demension for director Eastwood of special visual effects for this story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. George Lonegan (Matt Damon) is a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie LeLay (Cécile De France) a French journalist has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And

In “Paranormal Activity 2,” the relatives of Katie Featherston install surveillance in their home upon experiencing what they believe to be a series of break-ins by a vandal. However, they soon discover that a supernatural presence is responsible for the damage. In fact, it is Katie herself who has come to violently haunt the family and take her baby nephew in the process. Read Joseph J. ‘Howl’ By Stan Robinson A drama based on the 1957 San Francisco obscenity trial that Allen Ginsberg (James Franco) faced after

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

It’s San Francisco in 1957, and an American masterpiece is put on trial. Howl, the film, recounts this dark moment using three interwoven threads: the tumultuous life events that led a young Allen Ginsberg to find his true voice as an artist, society’s reaction (the obscenity trial), and mind-expanding animation that echoes the startling originality of the poem itself. All three coalesce in a genre-bending hybrid that brilliantly captures a pivotal moment-the birth of a counterculture. Wonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in October 2010? Tia Torres helps ‘Pit Bulls & Parolees’ one at a time “Everything’s leaning more positive toward the breed,” says dog rescuer Tia Torres, featured in Animal Planet’s “Pit Bulls & Parolees.” “Give us a fair chance; give us a fair shake. We have to prove ourselves all the time, but we’ll do it.” The reality series launches a second season on Saturday, Oct 30, returning to the Villalobos Rescue Center north of Los Angeles, where owner Torres employs family members, parolees and volunteers to help her manage her shelter, which can hold a maximum of 250 pit bulls (and sometimes has). Many people want pit bulls, but unfortunately, some cannot or will not care for the dogs, while others use them for illegal dogfighting. When they are abused or abandoned, that’s when Torres steps in. Now that she has some TV notoriety, Torres does get recognized. “The first thing they say is, ‘Oh, my God, I love what you do. Can I have a pit bull?’ ” she says. “Here’s my favorite one: ‘Oh, my God, I love your show!’ ‘Do you have a pit bull?’ ‘No.’ ‘Do you have someone who’s in prison?’ ‘No.’ ‘Then why do you watch our show?’

“SEX AND THE CITY 2” It’s usually great to see the four ladies together, but this second movie sequel to the HBO series simply doesn’t spend enough time in “the city,” proving just how pivotal a character New York also is in this franchise. The foursome heads off to Abu Dhabi when Samantha’s (Kim Cattrall) business dealings prompt her to bring along Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte (Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis). Somewhat incredibly, the now-married Carrie runs into former flame Aidan (John Corbett) while abroad; Chris Noth, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler and Jason Lewis also return. ›› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray)

“YOU DON’T KNOW JACK” Al Pacino recently won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of “death doctor” Jack Kevorkian in this HBO film directed by Barry Levinson. A patient’s right to determine his own fate is debated as Kevorkian stands trial over his apparatus that allows terminally ill people to control their destinies, quite literally. The solid cast also includes Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Brenda Vaccaro and Danny Huston ... but as can be expected, this is Pacino’s show. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (Not rated: AS, P)

“THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE” The follow-up to “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” this adaptation of another Stieg Larsson crime story returns Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist to their roles from the previous tale. The publisher played by Nyqvist is inspired to launch a probe of crimes against minors, especially since his computer hacker extraordinaire friend (Rapace) is implicated in a related murder. The deeper he digs, the more it appears some high-ranking politicians are playing unsavory parts in the matter. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “LAW & ORDER: UK – SEASON ONE” Now being shown in the U.S. on BBC America, this series is the official British version of the “Law & Order” that was a staple on American television for two decades ... with the scripts adapted from those utilized by the NBC show. Jamie Bamber (“Battlestar Galactica”) and Bradley Walsh play the police detective team whose cases are brought to trial by prosecutors portrayed by Ben Daniels and Freema Agyeman (“Doctor Who”). Much as the original show featured New York locations extensively, this edition makes ample use of London and the surrounding area. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) “THE TWILIGHT ZONE: FAN FAVORITES” When a series has endured in popularity long after its original run, it’s only logical that certain episodes will stand out for its devotees. This new collection assembles some of the most famous stories from the Rod Serlinghosted CBS suspense-fantasy anthology ... including “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” in which a passenger (William Shatner) thinks he sees a gremlin tearing an airplane apart from the outside. ››› (Not rated: AS, V)

Though he considers himself a late bloomer as an actor, having landed his first major role in the 2001 film “Evolution,” “Modern Family” star Ty Burrell says he’s been preparing to play “Family” man Phil Dunphy for most of his life – sort of. “I grew up in a family that really spent a great deal of energy trying to make each other laugh and telling stories and playing characters and improvising,” Burrell says, “so it was the most natural thing in the world to me right from the beginning. My dad and his brother would improvise at dinner and stuff, and it just would make us giddy. So my brother and I started improvising when we were really young. I’ve told my brother this many times – I felt like I’ve been practicing for this since I was 8 or 9 years old.” But, Burrell says, while he feels most comfortable in comic roles, it took a while to convince casting directors he really is a funny guy. “For whatever reason, in my initial casting as an actor – and I always attribute it to my raccoon eyes and Franken-brow – there was a natural tendency to cast me as the bad guy. The brief experience of my face on casting folks early on was I would come in and read a villain part, and I think maybe on first glance I looked that part. That’s how I made my living. And I am extremely grateful for those parts – they paid the bills for a long time. But I’m really, really grateful to play somebody well intended.” In fact, the role of Phil – the happy, oblivious real estate agent and father of three – was written with Burrell in mind by series creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, who worked with Burrell on 2007’s“Back to You.” And Burrell’s been tickled to let a little Phil seep back into him. “The thing that I really love about Phil is that he has such an incredible heart,” he says. “There is a real sense that Phil just really cares. And I think he really knows how good he’s got it. He is so grateful for Claire and for his kids, and that is truly the greatest pleasure to be able to perform. It’s an energizing thing and a really great way to roll out of bed and get ready for my day.” Birthplace: Grants Pass, Ore. And he’s not the only one. David Anders of “Heroes,” “24” and “The Vampire Diaries” was born there, too. TV cred: “The West Wing,” “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Out of Practice,” “Back to You,” “Modern Family” Movie cred: “Evolution” (2001), “Black Hawk Down” (2001), “Dawn of the Dead” (2004), “Friends With Money” (2006), “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” (2006), “The Incredible Hulk” (2008), the upcoming “Butter” with Jennifer Garner Family cred: Burrell wrote the off-Broadway play “Babble” with his brother, Duncan. “I’d Do Anything” judges

So many reality shows promise to make the winner a star. “I’d Do Anything” – a British competitive series that follows hopefuls auditioning for roles in “Oliver!” – delivers on that promise. The show, premiering on BBC America Wednesday, Oct. 27, was a hit in the United Kingdom. Its purpose is

to cast leads in a West End production. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh audition hundreds to find a Nancy and three Olivers. This version follows “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?” in which the lead for “The Sound of Music” was found, and “Any Dream Will Do,” which found the star for “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” “People in the West End were very sniffy about television getting involved in theater,” says host Graham Norton. “Cameron was very public about it not being a good idea and it being unfair to professionals. Cut to three years down the line, and he wants a slice of it, too. This turns ordinary musicals into massive hits.”

Rhys Ifans loves cooking and even has a “signature dish”. The Welsh actor loves spending time in the kitchen cooking up delicious treats - including his favorite dish of cawl, but finds his busy working life often mean he has to eat out or in hotels. He said: “I really, really like cooking, but, because of my work, I spend a lot of time in hotels and it gets frustrating. A hotel for two weeks is a holiday, but a hotel for three weeks is like a sort of strange hospital.”

One of the reasons why the 43-yearold star loves the recipe, which is a type of stew traditionally made with lamb and root vegetables, is because it requires minimum effort. He added: “Every culture has its version of it. It is something men can do. You just chuck it all in and go to the pub for a day and a half, come back and it tastes glorious.”

to modern day misconceptions that ale is somehow different from beer, rather than a subset of the drink. Hops begin their life as rhizomes. Rhizomes appear to be nothing more than root cuttings with buds growing from them, but also contain stored nutrients to provide initial energy for growth. It usually takes hops two to three years to grow to full maturity and produce a good output of hop flowers for harvest. Hop blossoms start out looking like large sand burrs and then take on a characteristic cone shape and grow in size. The size of a fully developed cone depends on the variety, varying from one to two inches long by one half to one inch in diameter. The hops are fully mature and ready By now just about everybody who watches television understands that Miller Lite is triple hop brewed, which is great because it brings to the forefront one of the four key ingredients in beer, the hop. Periodically over the next few weeks we will examine the ingredients of beer, so Miller Lite has given us the start we need to discuss hops. By the way, “periodically over the next few weeks…” means whenever I am pushing deadline and have no idea what to write about, so bear with me. Besides, we are in the middle of Fresh Hop (or Wet Hop) beer season, so what better time? What are hops? Great question, hops may be the most misunderstood of beer ingredients. They are a vital part of most beers as they provide flavor and aroma, as well as a certain stability to our favorite beverage. They are the female flower cone of the plant known as Humulus Lupulus. This plant is an aggressive growing, climbing vine which is usually trained to climb up strings attached to

trellises in the hop field, or hop yard. With the right amount of sunshine, a hop plant can potentially reach 40 feet high, although 25 feet is more common. They are also heavy with an average plant coming in at 20 plus pounds, so the string they grow on must be fairly strong. The first known instance of hop cultivation was in the Eighth Century in Hallertau Germany, however they were not used in beer making, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, until somewhere around 1079 AD. Even then it took a while for hops to catch on and replace other flavoring agents, most notably gruit, as a regular ingredient in beer. Gruit was an herbal mixture which contained a large variety of herbs no longer in regular use today, some of them narcotic in nature. It took until the Sixteenth Century for hops to fully replace other herbs as the flavoring choice in beer. In fact, for a while in England, “Ale” was considered to be an unhopped beverage and “Beer” was hopped. This may have given rise

for picking when two changes take place. First, immature hops have a damp, soft feel and when squeezed slightly tend to stay compressed. Mature hops feel more like paper, spring back when squeezed and feel noticeably lighter. The second key test is to pick an average example hop and cut it lengthwise down the center with a knife. When ready to pick the yellow powder, the lupulin sacs containing the essential oils and bitter substances, will be a dark shade of yellow, like the stripes on a highway, and it will be pungent. Hops are about 80% water when initially picked. Keep that number in mind as we will discuss the importance of that a little later. Commercial hops are typically harvested by pulling the entire vine and taking it to an area where the hop vines are hung and

dried. The cones are then harvested and usually processed into pellets. Although sometimes hops are sold as dry whole flowers or processed into hop oils. Different types of hops have different properties; some are used for bittering, some are used for flavor, and some are used for aroma. Depending on when they are added, hops can theoretically be used for any of these desired results. Bittering is important even though you may think you don’t like a bitter characteristic in beer. Without bittering hops, beer would be nothing but an incredibly sweet beverage that would be almost too cloying to drink. This comes from the starches in the malt that are converted to sugars during the brewing process. A little bitterness is needed even in the maltiest of beers. There are literally hundreds of varieties of hops so going into them all in detail is a bit much, but we can touch on a few of the key hops. Noble Hops are perhaps the only sub-category of hops that are well known. They are central European varietals named for the region they are grown in: Hallertau, Saaz, Spalt and Tetnang. These hops have very low bitterness and come off as more herbal and spicy than anything else. They are typically used for the aromas they provide more than anything else. Look for these hops in traditional European lagers.

On the American side, as with many things, bigger and bolder is better. Americans like bold flavors and the dominant hop varietals here certainly support that statement. The best known hop is the Cascade. Cascade hops are usually responsible for the grapefruit and other citrus notes found in many American Pale Ales and IPAs. Centennial hops are supercharged Cascades and are frequently used in conjunction with them. Centennials are notably used as the exclusive hop in Bell’s Two Hearted Ale. Other American hops include Amarillo (a hybrid of Cascades with a spicy twist to the citrus notes), Chinook (with a piney, resinous character), Nugget (a strong Continued on Page 28...

...continued from page 25. bittering hop used in a variety of American beer styles), and Simcoe (a spicy/floral mix of flavors which is appropriate in just about any ale that has a hoppy component.) Hops are often used together to provide a combination of flavors and aromas and beers are sometimes dry-hopped. Dry hopping involves adding hops to the beer during the fermentation process to provide an additional burst of aroma to a beer, usually a pale ale or IPA. There has been a recent trend towards single hop beers and locally Papago has done this with their Hopago IPA. Each batch is produced with a single variety of hop which changes every time it is brewed. The current batch is made with Cascades, but I have heard that the next batch may be done with a relatively new hop called Sorachi Ace. This hop, which is from Japan, provides an interesting lemony aroma and is useful everything from Saisons to Double IPAs. Mikkeller Brewing also has a series of single hop beers and they provide an interesting viewpoint on what different hops bring to a beer.

So here we are now in Wet Hop Season as noted above. What is a wet hop beer? It is a beer that is produced using the freshest hops possible. In many cases they are harvested local to the brewery and show up in the brew kettle the same day they are picked. If no hop fields are near the brewery, they are shipped overnight and added to the brew kettle no more than 24 hours after harvest. Since fresh picked hops are 80% water, these beers are called wet-hopped. The freshness of the hops provide an amazing aroma and flavor which makes you think you are in the middle of the hop field. Wet hop beers are similar to Beaujolais Nouveau wines which are best consumed young and fresh. They should be consumed within three months of bottling. While they will still be drinkable and enjoyable past that time, the fresh aspect of the hops may be lost. Next time you try your favorite beer, try to determine the hop profile. Is it all in the aroma? Is it spicy or citrusy? Does it leave a lingering finish? Doing this will be another step in your journey of fine beer appreciation.

Last season was a trying one for Kevin Martin, so much so that the Houston Rockets shooting guard spent the summer trying to remake his body and game. Injury-free and stronger after an extensive offseason training regimen, Martin is confident his old form is back and that, as a result, the Rockets will be back in the postseason after a year’s absence. It starts anew for Houston on Tuesday, Oct. 26, when they tip off the NBA season against the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in a game airing on TNT. And it starts anew as well for Martin, who begins his first full campaign with the Rockets after the team acquired him from Sacramento last February. At the time of the trade, Martin was three months removed from surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his left wrist, and even though he averaged more than 21 points per game with the Rockets, the six-year NBA veteran never regained the form that made him a prolific scorer with the Kings.

10 a.m. on A ESPN A slew of drivers sits within striking distance of the points lead as the Chase for the Sprint Cup goes into race No. 6 with the Tums Fast Relief 500. Denny Hamlin, who at this writing led the Cup standings, won this race last year on the half-mile oval of Virginia’s Martinsville Speedway, pulling away on a series of restarts for his third victory of 2009 over Jimmie Johnson.

In “Fernando Nation,” filmmaker Cruz Angeles tells the story of the pudgy Mexican lefty who pitched the Dodgers to a title, filled ballparks nationwide and helped revitalize a Chavez Ravine neighborhood torn apart by the building of Dodger Stadium in the 1960s.

THE BEST TEQUILA BARS! Sponsored by Cruz Tequila

TEQUILA

What do Bing Crosby and Jimmy Buffet Have in Common? Modest amounts of Tequila have been exported into U.S. border towns since the late 19th century. The first major boost to Tequila sales in the rest of the United States came in the late 1940s when the Margarita cocktail, a blend of Tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and ice was invented. Its origins are uncertain, but Hollywood actors and cocktail parties in California and Mexican resorts seem to be involved in most of the genesis stories. It is known that crooner and actor Bing Crosby was so taken with one particular brand of Tequila, Herradura, that he teamed up with fellow actor Phil Harris to import the brand into the United States. The Margarita, along with the Tequila Sunrise and the Tequila Sour, have become highly popular in the United States; in fact, it is claimed by many in the liquor industry that the Margarita is the single most popular cocktail in the nation. In the 1970s, when balladeer Jimmy Buffet sang of “Wasting away in Margaritaville,” the success of the song enticed millions more Americans to sip from the salt-rimmed Margarita glass.

LIVE! SECTION LOCAL RAP ARTIST ON THE RISE Keep your music radar on the name Yung Tokes, a local valley emcee determined to achieve the highest of rap and hip hop honors. Yung Tokes, born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan just outside Detroit, grew up around hiphop music, listening to Detroit native Eminem and other major artists. At age 18, he took it upon himself to pursue the industry himself. It all started with freestyles in the backyard of his Michigan home in front of bon fires with friends. The freestyles led to writing and his crafty flow and unique punch lines naturally began to grow. Having moved to Arizona to pursue his rap career even more, his writings soon enough turned to songs and the recording began. Now at age 21 his accomplishments have soared. He has contacts with Phoenix VIP Events and 101.5 Jamz, won Battle of the Bands II online in 2009, has opened for several major names in large venues, has multiple videos done at www.mystudio. net, sponsored live events, and even made a song for a major beveragae company in Houston, TX… (Sippin Syrup).

You can catch Yung Tokes’ next performance at the 2010 2nd Annual Halloween Music Festival on Oct. 30, 2010 at the Versus Sports Grill in Scottsdale.

THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 48

October 21st, 2010 - October 27th, 2010 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Hi all, My name is Dick Goldman and I own Blue Dragon Tattoo in Glendale Az. At one point I had 3 Tattoo Studios. One in Phoenix, one in Glendale and one in Flagstaff. I have been tattooing since Feb. 1979 and have done tattoo conventions all over the U.S.A. and in Europe. I have had pictures of tattoos that I have done published in every major tattoo magazine in the U.S. and a couple of magazines in Europe as well. I have won awards for tattoos at some of the top tattoo conventions.

TATU!

I have been a member of the National Tattoo Assoc. (NTA) since 1995 and a member of The Alliance of Professional Tattooists (APT) since 1994. I also spent 6 years on the board of directors for APT. Over the years of tattooing, I have found that there are a lot of questions that people ask about tattooing. I will be trying to answer them here as well as giving advice on what to look for in a quality tattoo shop and some of the ways to take care of a tattoo.

TATU! SECTION

Fine Art Tattoo and Piercings

One of the most common questions that I have gotten from people getting their first tattoo is “How bad will it hurt.” Granted, there is a little pain involved, what part of sticking needles into your body would you think didn’t hurt. But all kidding aside, it’s really not that bad. While the tattoo is being done, it feels like a burning sting. It has been compared to a continuous cat scratch, a bee sting or occasionally to getting a minor burn. It only feels this way while the tattoo is actually being done and as soon as the tattoo machine is taken away from the skin, it stops hurting. Then it feels like a sunburn and this feeling usually goes away within a couple of hours after the tattoo is finished. I will say that it doesn’t hurt to badly, as most people not only finish the tattoo without any problems, but they come back for their 2nd , 3rd and many times, even more and larger tattoos.

So for those of you getting your first tattoo and are worried about the pain. Don’t worry, get your tattoo and enjoy that first experience. http://www.blue-dragon.com

Peter Molyneux of Lionhead Studios has spent his fair share of time in the gaming spotlight. Despite his often criticized knack for overselling and overpromising the grandiose features of his upcoming games, the British developer has always delivered a blockbuster title that has been enjoyed by millions of loyal fans. “Fable,” his initial romp into the action/role-playing universe, was met with critical acclaim leading to the inevitable “Fable II” back in October 2008. Now gamers will get to dive headfirst into the consequence-filled world of Albion yet again, thanks to Molyneux’s latest creation, “Fable III” for the PC and Xbox 360. “Fable III” takes place 50 years after the events of “Fable II,” when a young citizen is called upon by the people to rise up against a tyrannical ruler. During your journey, every choice you make will weave its way into the world you live in, ultimately resulting in your true destiny. What that destiny is, whether it’s as a hero king or unjust ruler, is completely up to you. Just be sure to choose wisely, because your next decision could cost you your fortune, true love or even your life.

‘Dull’ Lady Gaga Lady Gaga is known as ‘Lady DullDull’ among her tour crew.

BY BEVERLY FOSTER SEINBERG

Lindsay Hartley stars as Arianna in “Days Of Our Lives,” weekdays on NBC.

ALL MY CHILDREN Annie was taken aback by Emma’s strong reaction to her plan to move out of the mansion and drowned her sorrows at a bar. JR rescued her and insisted she stay the night with him. Liza witnessed Ryan and Greenlee kissing. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Stephanie checked herself into the hospital for cancer surgery. Afterward, Brooke introduced Dayzee to the Forresters and explained her role in Stephanie’s decision to seek treatment. Stephanie asked her family to assist her in helping the homeless. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Arianna overheard Sami telling Rafe that she shot EJ. Rafe tried to talk her out of going to EJ, but she insisted. In an effort to reach out to Arianna, Sami told her what happened on the night she shot EJ, and Arianna got it on videotape. GENERAL HOSPITAL Brenda tried to convince Dante of Sonny’s innocence in the car bomb case. Sonny continued to pursue Brenda, but she kept insisting they had no future. Lisa continued to push Robin’s buttons, and Robin freaked out when she suspected Lisa of messing with her patients. ONE LIFE TO LIVE Tea and Dani had an emotional reunion. Eli told an unconscious Greg about his plans for Tea, then injected a mysterious substance into Greg’s IV. Starr tried to free herself and Hope from the attic. James began to suspect Hannah in Starr’s disappearance. Hannah visited Starr and threatened to take Hope away. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Sharon freed Adam and Faith from the rubble. Faith was OK, but Adam had some cuts and bruises from shielding her with his body. Abby and Daniel were shocked to find Diane and Tucker together. Tucker told Diane that this was a one-time thing and their relationship must remain strictly business.

The ‘Alejandro’ singer - real name Stefani Germanotta - is well-known for her outlandish stage outfits but is said to prefer a more comfortable look when she is off-duty, opting for baseball caps and sweat pants.

“She gets all comfy in sweats and a baseball cap, then becomes the easygoing gal we jokingly call ‘our den mom’. Another nickname we have for her is ‘Lady DullDull’, because she looks just like any one of us.”

A tour insider explained to National Enquirer magazine:

JACQUELINE CUTLER

Sue and Brick Heck of ‘The Middle’ Even in the best of economies, it takes a certain amount of parental fortitude to approve the trampy Halloween costumes popular for girls (when did corsets and garter belts become mandatory?) and an elastic budget to cover what amounts to shoddy synthetics designed to last all of a night. Somewhere between cutting out eyeholes from a pillowcase and sewing a Shakespearean ruffle collar is where most parents fall, and if we can do it creatively and cheaply, all the better. Julia Caston, costume designer for ABC’s “The Middle,” dresses the members of the Heck family as if they’re on a budget. Caston, along with Eden Sher, who plays Sue, and Atticus Shaffer, who plays Brick, discuss the sitcom’s Halloween-themed Wednesday, Oct. 27, episode. In this, the Heck family has its usual flashbacks. As in many families, the siblings’ costumes play off one another. In one scene, Sue will be a chicken and Brick an egg. Caston plans on putting Sue in a sweatshirt and possibly rubber gloves on her feet, red tights and feathers. To transform Brick into an egg, Caston was planning on making a foam-covered papier-mache mold. “He will be inside the egg, so his little face will come through the top,” Caston says. Caston shops at Michaels and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft. She also suggests Target, Wal-Mart, Sears and JCPenney for sweatshirts and tights. Eden Sher and Atticus Shaffer
