This dynamic and touching story of two artists making their way through careers, a relationship, and finally marriage is full of great songs and performances by Pete Good as Jamie and Sarah Hayes as Cathy. Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Walden Media and 20th Century Fox are teaming up to produce a liveaction feature-length motion picture based on Bil Keane’s syndicated comic strip “The Family Circus.” The script for the family flick, which is seen to have the potential of a franchise, will be penned by Bob Hilgenberg and Rob Muir (“Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue”). Fox has also scored the film rights to an untitled project based around the music of the Beach Boys. Similar to the ABBA-inspired musical “Mama Mia,” the movie will be a fictional story that uses the band’s music weaved into a narrative story. John Stamos will produce along with Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (“Hairspray”). Finally, in casting news, Kate Beckinsale has officially agreed to reprise her role as vampire heroine Selene in a fourth installment of Screen Gems’s “Underworld” franchise while Rhys Ifans has signed on to play the yet-tobe-revealed villain in Sony’s “SpiderMan” reboot and Natalie Portman is being pursued to star in Ridley Scott’s “Alien” prequel.

Review by Stan Robinson Simplistically, the description for ‘Stone’ has an ordinary overall theme that we’ve visited multiple times throughout cinematic history. The theme of one person as the target with a pair, in this case, a man and a woman, with the prime mission of coercing that target to do their will. In most cases, it’s a physical means. In this case, it’s mental psychological entrapment… A convicted arsonist (Edward Norton) with a long history of in and out of prison throughout his life, sets in motion a plan to psychologically manipulate a cynical and ‘by-the-book’ parole officer (Robert De Niro) into securing his parole from his latest stay in prison, by placing his beautiful wife (Milla Jovovich) right square in the middle of the long-time parole officer’s path. Tia Torres helps ‘Pit Bulls & Parolees’ one at a time “Everything’s leaning more positive toward the breed,” says dog rescuer Tia Torres, featured in Animal Planet’s “Pit Bulls & Parolees.” “Give us a fair chance; give us a fair shake. We have to prove ourselves all the time, but we’ll do it.” The reality series launches a second season on Saturday, Oct 30, returning to the Villalobos Rescue Center north of Los Angeles, where owner Torres employs family members, parolees and volunteers to help her manage her shelter, which can hold a maximum of 250 pit bulls (and sometimes has). Many people want pit bulls, but unfortunately, some cannot or will not care for the dogs, while others use them for illegal dogfighting. When they are abused or abandoned, that’s when Torres steps in. Now that she has some TV notoriety, Torres does get recognized. “The first thing they say is, ‘Oh, my God, I love what you do. Can I have a pit bull?’ ” she says. “Here’s my favorite one: ‘Oh, my God, I love your show!’ ‘Do you have a pit bull?’ ‘No.’ ‘Do you have someone who’s in prison?’ ‘No.’ ‘Then why do you watch our show?’

The foursome heads off to Abu Dhabi when Samantha’s (Kim Cattrall) business dealings prompt her to bring along Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte (Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis). “YOU DON’T KNOW JACK” Al Pacino recently won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of “death doctor” Jack Kevorkian in this HBO film directed by Barry Levinson. The solid cast also includes Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Brenda Vaccaro and Danny Huston ... but as can be expected, this is Pacino’s show. The publisher played by Nyqvist is inspired to launch a probe of crimes against minors, especially since his computer hacker extraordinaire friend (Rapace) is implicated in a related murder. The deeper he digs, the more it appears some high-ranking politicians are playing unsavory parts in the matter. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “LAW & ORDER: UK – SEASON ONE” Now being shown in the U.S. on BBC America, this series is the official British version of the “Law & Order” that was a staple on American television for two decades ... with the scripts adapted from those utilized by the NBC show. Jamie Bamber (“Battlestar Galactica”) and Bradley Walsh play the police detective team whose cases are brought to trial by prosecutors portrayed by Ben Daniels and Freema Agyeman (“Doctor Who”). Though he considers himself a late bloomer as an actor, having landed his first major role in the 2001 film “Evolution,” “Modern Family” star Ty Burrell says he’s been preparing to play “Family” man Phil Dunphy for most of his life – sort of. “I grew up in a family that really spent a great deal of energy trying to make each other laugh and telling stories and playing characters and improvising,” Burrell says, “so it was the most natural thing in the world to me right from the beginning. My dad and his brother would improvise at dinner and stuff, and it just would make us giddy. So my brother and I started improvising when we were really young. I’ve told my brother this many times – I felt like I’ve been practicing for this since I was 8 or 9 years old.” But, Burrell says, while he feels most comfortable in comic roles, it took a while to convince casting directors he really is a funny guy. “For whatever reason, in my initial casting as an actor – and I always attribute it to my raccoon eyes and Franken-brow – there was a natural tendency to cast me as the bad guy. The brief experience of my face on casting folks early on was I would come in and read a villain part, and I think maybe on first glance I looked that part. That’s how I made my living. And I am extremely grateful for those parts – they paid the bills for a long time. But I’m really, really grateful to play somebody well intended.” In fact, the role of Phil – the happy, oblivious real estate agent and father of three – was written with Burrell in mind by series creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, who worked with Burrell on 2007’s“Back to You.” And Burrell’s been tickled to let a little Phil seep back into him. “The thing that I really love about Phil is that he has such an incredible heart,” he says. “There is a real sense that Phil just really cares. And I think he really knows how good he’s got it. He is so grateful for Claire and for his kids, and that is truly the greatest pleasure to be able to perform. It’s an energizing thing and a really great way to roll out of bed and get ready for my day.” Birthplace: Grants Pass, Ore. And he’s not the only one. So many reality shows promise to make the winner a star. “I’d Do Anything” – a British competitive series that follows hopefuls auditioning for roles in “Oliver!” – delivers on that promise. The show, premiering on BBC America Wednesday, Oct. 27, was a hit in the United Kingdom. Its purpose is

to cast leads in a West End production. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh audition hundreds to find a Nancy and three Olivers. This version follows “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?” in which the lead for “The Sound of Music” was found, and “Any Dream Will Do,” which found the star for “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” “People in the West End were very sniffy about television getting involved in theater,” says host Graham Norton. “Cameron was very public about it not being a good idea and it being unfair to professionals. Cut to three years down the line, and he wants a slice of it, too. This turns ordinary musicals into massive hits.”

to modern day misconceptions that ale is somehow different from beer, rather than a subset of the drink. Hops begin their life as rhizomes. Rhizomes appear to be nothing more than root cuttings with buds growing from them, but also contain stored nutrients to provide initial energy for growth. It usually takes hops two to three years to grow to full maturity and produce a good output of hop flowers for harvest. Hop blossoms start out looking like large sand burrs and then take on a characteristic cone shape and grow in size. The size of a fully developed cone depends on the variety, varying from one to two inches long by one half to one inch in diameter. The hops are fully mature and ready By now just about everybody who watches television understands that Miller Lite is triple hop brewed, which is great because it brings to the forefront one of the four key ingredients in beer, the hop. Periodically over the next few weeks we will examine the ingredients of beer, so Miller Lite has given us the start we need to discuss hops. By the way, “periodically over the next few weeks…” means whenever I am pushing deadline and have no idea what to write about, so bear with me. Besides, we are in the middle of Fresh Hop (or Wet Hop) beer season, so what better time? What are hops? Great question, hops may be the most misunderstood of beer ingredients. They are a vital part of most beers as they provide flavor and aroma, as well as a certain stability to our favorite beverage. They are the female flower cone of the plant known as Humulus Lupulus. This plant is an aggressive growing, climbing vine which is usually trained to climb up strings attached to

trellises in the hop field, or hop yard. With the right amount of sunshine, a hop plant can potentially reach 40 feet high, although 25 feet is more common. They are also heavy with an average plant coming in at 20 plus pounds, so the string they grow on must be fairly strong. The first known instance of hop cultivation was in the Eighth Century in Hallertau Germany, however they were not used in beer making, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, until somewhere around 1079 AD. Even then it took a while for hops to catch on and replace other flavoring agents, most notably gruit, as a regular ingredient in beer. Gruit was an herbal mixture which contained a large variety of herbs no longer in regular use today, some of them narcotic in nature. It took until the Sixteenth Century for hops to fully replace other herbs as the flavoring choice in beer. In fact, for a while in England, “Ale” was considered to be an unhopped beverage and “Beer” was hopped. This may have given rise

for picking when two changes take place. First, immature hops have a damp, soft feel and when squeezed slightly tend to stay compressed. Mature hops feel more like paper, spring back when squeezed and feel noticeably lighter. The second key test is to pick an average example hop and cut it lengthwise down the center with a knife. When ready to pick the yellow powder, the lupulin sacs containing the essential oils and bitter substances, will be a dark shade of yellow, like the stripes on a highway, and it will be pungent. Hops are about 80% water when initially picked. Keep that number in mind as we will discuss the importance of that a little later. Commercial hops are typically harvested by pulling the entire vine and taking it to an area where the hop vines are hung and

dried. The cones are then harvested and usually processed into pellets. Although sometimes hops are sold as dry whole flowers or processed into hop oils. Different types of hops have different properties; some are used for bittering, some are used for flavor, and some are used for aroma. Depending on when they are added, hops can theoretically be used for any of these desired results. Bittering is important even though you may think you don’t like a bitter characteristic in beer. Without bittering hops, beer would be nothing but an incredibly sweet beverage that would be almost too cloying to drink. This comes from the starches in the malt that are converted to sugars during the brewing process. A little bitterness is needed even in the maltiest of beers. There are literally hundreds of varieties of hops so going into them all in detail is a bit much, but we can touch on a few of the key hops. Noble Hops are perhaps the only sub-category of hops that are well known. They are central European varietals named for the region they are grown in: Hallertau, Saaz, Spalt and Tetnang. These hops have very low bitterness and come off as more herbal and spicy than anything else. They are typically used for the aromas they provide more than anything else. On the American side, as with many things, bigger and bolder is better. Americans like bold flavors and the dominant hop varietals here certainly support that statement. The best known hop is the Cascade. Cascade hops are usually responsible for the grapefruit and other citrus notes found in many American Pale Ales and IPAs. ...continued from page 25. bittering hop used in a variety of American beer styles), and Simcoe (a spicy/floral mix of flavors which is appropriate in just about any ale that has a hoppy component.) Hops are often used together to provide a combination of flavors and aromas and beers are sometimes dry-hopped. Dry hopping involves adding hops to the beer during the fermentation process to provide an additional burst of aroma to a beer, usually a pale ale or IPA. There has been a recent trend towards single hop beers and locally Papago has done this with their Hopago IPA. Each batch is produced with a single variety of hop which changes every time it is brewed. The current batch is made with Cascades, but I have heard that the next batch may be done with a relatively new hop called Sorachi Ace. This hop, which is from Japan, provides an interesting lemony aroma and is useful everything from Saisons to Double IPAs. Mikkeller Brewing also has a series of single hop beers and they provide an interesting viewpoint on what different hops bring to a beer.

So here we are now in Wet Hop Season as noted above. What is a wet hop beer? It is a beer that is produced using the freshest hops possible. In many cases they are harvested local to the brewery and show up in the brew kettle the same day they are picked. If no hop fields are near the brewery, they are shipped overnight and added to the brew kettle no more than 24 hours after harvest. Since fresh picked hops are 80% water, these beers are called wet-hopped. The freshness of the hops provide an amazing aroma and flavor which makes you think you are in the middle of the hop field. Wet hop beers are similar to Beaujolais Nouveau wines which are best consumed young and fresh. They should be consumed within three months of bottling. While they will still be drinkable and enjoyable past that time, the fresh aspect of the hops may be lost. Next time you try your favorite beer, try to determine the hop profile. Is it all in the aroma? Is it spicy or citrusy? Does it leave a lingering finish? Doing this will be another step in your journey of fine beer appreciation.

Last season was a trying one for Kevin Martin, so much so that the Houston Rockets shooting guard spent the summer trying to remake his body and game. Injury-free and stronger after an extensive offseason training regimen, Martin is confident his old form is back and that, as a result, the Rockets will be back in the postseason after a year’s absence. It starts anew for Houston on Tuesday, Oct. 26, when they tip off the NBA season against the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in a game airing on TNT. And it starts anew as well for Martin, who begins his first full campaign with the Rockets after the team acquired him from Sacramento last February. At the time of the trade, Martin was three months removed from surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his left wrist, and even though he averaged more than 21 points per game with the Rockets, the six-year NBA veteran never regained the form that made him a prolific scorer with the Kings.

What do Bing Crosby and Jimmy Buffet Have in Common? Modest amounts of Tequila have been exported into U.S. border towns since the late 19th century. The first major boost to Tequila sales in the rest of the United States came in the late 1940s when the Margarita cocktail, a blend of Tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and ice was invented. Its origins are uncertain, but Hollywood actors and cocktail parties in California and Mexican resorts seem to be involved in most of the genesis stories. It is known that crooner and actor Bing Crosby was so taken with one particular brand of Tequila, Herradura, that he teamed up with fellow actor Phil Harris to import the brand into the United States. Yung Tokes, born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan just outside Detroit, grew up around hiphop music, listening to Detroit native Eminem and other major artists. Hi all, My name is Dick Goldman and I own Blue Dragon Tattoo in Glendale Az. At one point I had 3 Tattoo Studios. One in Phoenix, one in Glendale and one in Flagstaff. I have been tattooing since Feb. 1979 and have done tattoo conventions all over the U.S.A. and in Europe. One of the most common questions that I have gotten from people getting their first tattoo is “How bad will it hurt.” Granted, there is a little pain involved, what part of sticking needles into your body would you think didn’t hurt. But all kidding aside, it’s really not that bad. While the tattoo is being done, it feels like a burning sting. It has been compared to a continuous cat scratch, a bee sting or occasionally to getting a minor burn. It only feels this way while the tattoo is actually being done and as soon as the tattoo machine is taken away from the skin, it stops hurting. Then it feels like a sunburn and this feeling usually goes away within a couple of hours after the tattoo is finished. I will say that it doesn’t hurt to badly, as most people not only finish the tattoo without any problems, but they come back for their 2nd , 3rd and many times, even more and larger tattoos.

Sue and Brick Heck of ‘The Middle’ Even in the best of economies, it takes a certain amount of parental fortitude to approve the trampy Halloween costumes popular for girls (when did corsets and garter belts become mandatory?) and an elastic budget to cover what amounts to shoddy synthetics designed to last all of a night. Somewhere between cutting out eyeholes from a pillowcase and sewing a Shakespearean ruffle collar is where most parents fall, and if we can do it creatively and cheaply, all the better. Julia Caston, costume designer for ABC’s “The Middle,” dresses the members of the Heck family as if they’re on a budget. Caston, along with Eden Sher, who plays Sue, and Atticus Shaffer, who plays Brick, discuss the sitcom’s Halloween-themed Wednesday, Oct. 27, episode. In this, the Heck family has its usual flashbacks. As in many families, the siblings’ costumes play off one another. In one scene, Sue will be a chicken and Brick an egg. Caston plans on putting Sue in a sweatshirt and possibly rubber gloves on her feet, red tights and feathers. To transform Brick into an egg, Caston was planning on making a foam-covered papier-mache mold. “He will be inside the egg, so his little face will come through the top,” Caston says.
