Nick@ Night By Nick Connell “IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!” -Frank Sinatra Christmas As the beautiful holiday season winds toward the New Year, remember to bless the less fortunate around you. We have the ability to make simple and kind gestures to any stranger - and in doing so honor the holy spirit of these precious times. Blessings to all the casts, crews and staff of all the wonderful shows and concerts this year. You bring us all such amazing joy during the holidays! Merry Christmas and a Happy New year! Shalom! PHOENIX BOYS CHOIR Festival of Carols Phoenix Locations. The Holiday season wouldn’t be complete without the magnificent sounds of the Phoenix Boys Choir. Georg Stangelberger and his artistic staff (it takes alot of folks to pull off such an enormous undertaking) keep coming up with creative and fun ways to celebrate this rich tradition of Carols from around the world. As I sat with eyes closed resting from a busy week, I was taken away with heavenly harmonies from another place and time -maybe a few thousand years ago - to that great awakening where all men can and will be joined by a great light, Veni Veni Emmanuel! All the worries and cares just seemed to disappear at that moment, as hope returned eternal again. But there was more to enjoy this special day from these heavenly choirs - as the Tour, Town, and Masters collectively stunned the loyal visitors with another 5 star performance, including Fum Fum Fum from Mexico; Still, Still, Still from Austria; Mi Y’Malel from Israel; the traditional version of the Holly and the Ivy; O Tannebaum from Germany; Minuit Chretians by Adolphe Adam, and the delightful and charming Twas the Night Before Christmas by Ken Darby, Arranged by Simeone, and staged to perfection by Rachel and Mark Stoddard. Oh what a joy that was spread throughout this festive crowd - that may last for another thousand years! Kudos to all the Members of the Phoenix Boys Choir! I can’t wait for the February concert. A CAROL FOR TINY TIM at Fountain Hills Community Theatre. There was more fun to be had during this holiday season as FHCT and their Youth Theatre presented A Carol for Tiny Tim. There’s no secret why they have received 27 ariZONI nominations this last year – talent - pure and simple. This was an edgy production, similar to A Christmas Carol, with spirits and ghosts hanging around old London. Only this time, we find a selfish and self centered Tim(played by talented Nick Disney) not tiny any more, taking advantage of his old uncle Ebeneezer Scrooge (played kindly by Hank Cipolaro), who has turned out to be the pillar of generosity in the community. But as the fates would have it, old Jacob Marley (played by the wise old veteran Chuck Disney) must enlist the talents of the three spirits of Christmas past (a stunning gemSummer Beckman), Christmas present (the commanding Alice Bice), and Christmas Future (the mysterious Katie Male) to light up young Tim’s world. All’s well that ends well as the mystery of Christmas moves Tim to mends his ways and turn to the service of others as his true meaning of life. A splendid time was had by all, and even some hot cider shared to warm the weary soul. Next up, The Producers, January 14th. SPOOKY KOOL at The Lost Leaf in Phoenix. There’s a great spot for jazz in downtown Phoenix you have to visit soon - THE LOST LEAF Gallery, in the historic 5th street and Roosevelt neighborhood of Phoenix. They have food and refreshments too - but this night belonged to the hot and creative SPOOKY KOOL jazz group. We’ll be hearing alot about Gabriel Bey and his original Spooky Kool groove music experience in the coming weeks. They are as hot as New Orleans on a summer night! You can check out more on their upcoming shows and plug in to the Arizona music and arts culture at AzCulture.com. BREAK A LEG!

French producer Lagardere Entertainment is financing a 12-episode television series based on the Jason Statham-led action flick franchise “The Transporter.” The program will likely premiere next November on one of the major U.S. Networks. Meanwhile, EuropaCorp is looking into developing a television series based on the Liam Neeson-led thriller “Taken.” However, serious work on the potential project will not begin until the film’s sequel starts shooting this spring. Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “Staying positive with the critique of Gulliver’s Travels, this review will be approached with the “glass if half full” mentality. Why would Billy Connolly, Emily Blunt and Chris O’Dowd waste their time with such nonsense? They must have owed Jack Black a favor. Why would someone fund such an idiotic movie? They must have received a surprise refund check from the IRS. Why would so much toilet humor be put into a family Christmas weekend release? Not sure. Let’s look at it this way; Gulliver’s Travels is one of the top five “least best” movies of the year and has a few memorable moments.” Grade: F

Reviewers’ Roundup: ‘Little Fockers’ As both clans descend for a family birthday, Greg Focker’s (Ben Stiller) moonlighting job threatens to derail his hard-won position in Jack’s (Robert De Niro) “circle of trust.” (PG-13 – 98 minutes) The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Hairdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “Al-

though it is nice to see the story return to the simple roots of the fractured relationship between Greg and Jack, it feels as though the screenwriters are taking advantage of our appreciation for these characters by not putting much effort into the plot. As your average disposal comedy, it works. But it never even approaches the quality expected from the ‘Fockers’ franchise.” Grade: C Randy Montgomery (AZWeekly): “The Byrnes and Focker families are back for another installment of forced comedic moments spurred by visual and verbal misunderstandings. The entire cast is back as well including Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand. Each character is so uniquely irritating that you have a hard time liking any of them. This film delivers a few funny moments, but not enough to endure the remaining 98 minutes. If you have seen the trailer, you have seen “the best” it has to offer. Let’s hope this is the last “focking” one of these movies.” Grade: C Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): With dramas of all subject matter in the forefront the familiar battle for Greg as the head of his household and Jack always exerting his will for control influence is nice and light movie fair as it escalates. Jessica Alba’s character, the catalyst for Greg’s moon-

The story of Gulliver and the little people gets a face-lift with 3D film technology and special effects as we’re presented this modern day interpretation with Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) whose been a long time mail room employee and under false pretenses, takes an assignment as a travel writer to investigate the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, but instead during a storm his boat ends up on the island of Liliput, where he towers over its tiny fearful citizens. The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “Holding with a firm rule of not offering an opinion for a movie unless I see it from ‘black to black’ (opening titles-closing credits), because of a technical problem for our screening with the ending not being viewed, I won’t offer a grade or review. Suffice it to say, I just have to know how it ended and will see it again for the ending. I’m intrigued enough by the cast of Jack Black, Emily Blunt, and Amanda Peet, are enough to want to see it again for the ending, which in itself gives it a passable grade!”

Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “The look at the women’s movement for equal pay for our English counterpart in the movements of the 60’s world wide, and the power that big business, namely Ford Motor Company in this instance, will exert to get their will, captured my imagination and my heart for the equality of women. ‘Made in Dagenham’ presents a ‘historical time portal’ view through Sally Hawkins’ character, of a time in history that set in motion the mindset of the equality of the sexes in the workplaces of the world.” Grade: B Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “Labor disputes are not exactly the most enthralling events when you get right down to it - especially when they are portrayed on the silver screen. Yet, thanks to director Nigel Cole’s fetching portrayal of a revolutionary period in the world’s history and a stellar performance by Sally Hawkins, ‘Made in Dagenham’ manages to manufacture a mildly entertaining experience.” Grade: C

Reviewers Roundup: ‘Rabbit Hole’ The lives of a happily married couple (Nicole Kidman & Aaron Eckhart) are turned upside down after their young son dies in an automobile accident in ‘Rabbit Hole’. As any parent knows, that’s an aspect we really hope we’re never faced with. Each deal with the loss in their own way, both inwardly and exteriorly affecting their lives as well as each of their friendships with life long friends and relatives, as they try to find the peace to continue living. (PG 13-91 minutes) The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online.

Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): “Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart play a struggling couple who are coping with the accidental death of their son in Rabbit Hole. While the script isn’t unique, the performances by Kidman and Eckhart are. Kidman has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Disappointingly, Eckhart wasn’t nominated, despite turning in the best performance of his career. (We’ll hope the Academy recognizes him). There are several heart breaking scenes as the couple tries to mend their marriage and deal with their loss. Also of note is a moving supporting role by Diane Wiest who has a scene with Kidman that brought a tear to my eye.” Grade: A Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “With a familiar theme of coping with the loss of a loved one, Nicole Kidman’s performance is the anchor that presents a soul stirring character that drags us ‘kicking and screaming’ against our emotional will to empathize with her loss. Nicole Kidman received my nomination for ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role.” My full nominations list is available at ScreenScene.org Grade: B+

strong sentimentality.” Grade: C

Reviewers Roundup: ‘True Grit’ Coen brothers Ethan and Noel present their vision of the 1969 western classic story of 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) who sets out with extreme determination to track down her father’s murder by hired hand Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). To help, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with “True Grit,” Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who wants Chaney for reasons of his own, the trio find danger and surprises on the journey, while each has his and her “grit” tested to the limits during the arduous, grueling undertaking. (Rated PG-110 minutes) The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online. Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly): Westerns are always fun to watch since so few of them are released by studios today. The Coen Brother’s latest, True Grit is quite possibly my favorite of theirs so far and is a fresh retelling of the John Wayne classic of the same name. In the film, a young

girl played by Hailee Steinfeld enlists the help of Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges to hunt for the killer of her father. Steinfeld deserves an Oscar. Surprisingly snubbed by the Golden Globes, True Grit is one of the best-written, funny and entertaining films of 2010. Did the Hollywood Foreign Press not see True Grit?” Grade: A+ Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “Having worked my 22 years of film production back east on city streets type shooting, westerns have always been a ‘guilty pleasure’ for me as a viewer! The finer nuances of the west including the English language pronunciations and cadence of speech, along with the wonder and yes, the harshness of the lifestyle, ‘True Grit’ presented by the Coen brothers is high on my must see list. An extraordinary performance by young actress Hailee Steinfeld, who holds her on with veterans Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin, is my Best Supporting Actress nominee!” My full nominations list is available at ScreenScene.org Grade: A-

Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “In anime style animation, we have the view of living in our high-tech influenced world through the eyes of Kenji and his orbit of involvements, as lives are intertwined with reality! ‘Summer Wars’ with its light-hearted approach is entertainingly insightful with the underlying threat of how to resolve an encroachment on the ‘OZ’ internet community, with Kenji who’s completely innocent, as the primary world wide wanted ‘cyber criminal suspect’ being pursued for taking primary services linked to cities infra structure off line and disrupting the order of ‘OZ’.” Grade: C+ Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “Although the genre is not for everyone, anime fans will relish in the dazzling visual hurricane that filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda has created with ‘Summer Wars.’ Perhaps most impressive is the mere idea of an intensely immersive Internet experience. Yet, there is no doubt that some of the scenes set in the real-world offer a surprisingly

Pick Your Produce! by Chef Rachel Albert, The Healthy Cooking Coach

Is organic produce more nutritious? That depends on when and where you get it. Outof-season organic produce from a conventional or natural foods supermarket may have little chemical contamination, but it may not be more nutritious than conventional produce. Here’s why: As detailed in The Garden of Eating: A Produce-Dominated Diet & Cookbook, farms raising mass market organic produce often use high nitrogen fertilizers to accelerate growth, so fruits and veggies reach marketable size without having time to absorb minerals or synthesize nutrients to maximum possible levels. Mass-market farms often use hybrids selected for productivity, external appearance, and durability in transcontinental transportation, not taste or nutritional value. Lastly, imported produce is often picked before it has ripened and reached maximum nutritional value, then shipped 1500 miles before it reaches consumers. Fresh produce can lose 50 percent of

its carotene (pro-vitamin A) and 60 percent of its vitamin C within 3 days of harvest. Within a week, these nutrients can be completely lost. Rarely is produce in your mouth within a day of harvest when the nutritional value is greatest (assuming it was allowed to ripen fully). The solution? Whenever possible pick produce from local growers. Locally and organically grown produce is the best choice. If this isn’t available or affordable, choose locally grown nonorganic produce from small farmers who typically use fewer chemicals than large mono-crop farms that produce produce only for transcontinental shipment and supermarket sales. As a bonus, locally grown organic produce often costs less than imported varieties and many people find that it lasts longer because it’s fresher.

This mid-week farmers market located in central Phoenix in the Town & Country Plaza (2021 E Camelback Rd) Wednesday mornings from 9 am to 2 pm, attracts a loyal following. If you’re new to the valley, you might be expecting the fanfare of a West Coast or Midwest farmer’s market. When I moved to the valley seven years ago, I was excited to hear about this farmers’ market. However, I failed to find it the first few times I searched for it. I was looking for rows of produce vendors in the middle of the parking lot. I saw signs but I didn’t know where they were pointing. Turns out the sellers were stationed at tables in the covered walkway in front of the shops on the Trader Joe’s side of the plaza.

While this market lacks the size of some city’s markets, the two main produce vendors, former pharmacist, Bob McClendon of McClendon’s Select and former Nurse, Jana Anderson of Pinnacle Gardens, offer appetizing deals on fresh, mostly locally grown, organic fruits and vegetables. You’ll find heirloom varieties and price tags that are usually lower than what you’d find in stores.

BEER! ALL HAIL THE ALE We are going to work on finishing up the Ale styles over the next two weeks and then look at lagers. Somewhere in there we will work in some things like cider and maybe even mead. So let’s get started. Scottish Ale - Scottish Ales originated in Scotland and are generally clean and malty with perhaps a faint touch of smoke and few fruity esters. Most examples have a low hop profile due to the historical fact that hops are not grown in Scotland and expensive imported hops were, therefore, used sparingly. Some examples also have a peaty character which is typically perceived as earthy, smoky or very lightly roasted. Typically this ale is clear, deep amber or dark copper in appearance, although the stronger versions can be dark brown in color. Scottish Ales are divided into sub-styles differentiated on alcoholic strength ranging from a low of 2.5% to around 10% ABV. This style also includes the more heavy duty Scotch Ale. Smoked Ale - Not to be confused with their smoked German style counterparts - the rauchbiers - or the Scottish ales, smoked ales are a class of ales (of theoretically any other

substyle) that is smoked to achieve smoky aromas and flavors. Porters are the most common base style and various sources (e.g. peat, oak, maple, alder, mesquite, beechwood, and fruit woods) can be used to obtain the smoky properties of a smoked ale (the malt ingredients are smoked prior to brewing). Regardless of the base style, the smoking should seek to enhance and not overpower the base beer. Generally, the smoked flavors are less prominent in smoked ales than those found in rauchbiers. Spiced Ale - The spiced ale category captures any ale (or lager) containing spices, herbs, flowers, or vegetables that does not better fit another existing style that is traditionally made with spices (ie. a Belgian Wit brewed with coriander is properly classified under Witbier). The additives can include any spice, herb, flower, or vegetable and is only limited by the imagination of the brewer. Beers brewed only with fermentable additives/adjuncts (like honey or molasses but no spices, herbs, flowers, or vegetables) are normally not categorized as spiced ales. The ideal examples from this style typically do not include extreme or overpowering quantities of the spices, herbs, or vegetables, but rather complementary and supporting levels that add creativity or help to enhance the base beer style. Pumpkin, Winter specialty, Gruit, Heather, Spruce, and Chili are some examples of spiced ale substyles that have gained notoriety within craft brewing.

fied by a bitter dryness that complements the underlying creaminess of the body. The bitterness, dryness, and acidity should never dominate to the point of removing the smooth quality of these beers. Stouts - Foreign / Extra Stout - Foreign stouts were originally brewed as export products for tropical islands. They are usually based on a dry stout or sweet stout foundation with an extra level of maltiness and higher alcohol levels. They fall short of an imperial stout in both alcohol level and hopping (both less with hops playing a minor role at most). Beyond the basic caramel and roasted malt flavors, the interpretations can vary a bit. Frequently, extra stouts start malty and finish with a dry bitterness, although either sweetness or bitterness can overall characterize these beers. These beers have medium to full-bodied mouthfeel (sometimes with some acidity) and are dark brown

Stouts- Dry Stout - Dry stouts (often referred to as Irish Stouts) are mahogany brown to black in appearance and normally feature a generous tan to brown head with excellent retention. The aromas and flavors normally consist of roasted barley, coffee, caramel, chocolate, and sometimes astringent and / or acidic qualities. As their name suggests, the finish is typiDecember 23rd, 2010 - December 29th, 2010

to black in appearance. Stouts - Imperial Stout - As with most “imperial” beers, the imperial stout is “boss” of the stout world, emphasizing more maltiness, more alcohol, and often more hops than its non-imperial peers. The style originated in England as an export product to the Baltic States, where the Russian Imperial Court purportedly Continued on Page 23... enjoyed these products. This style has intense flavors including those typical of any stout (but magnified and more complex), as well as dark fruitiness (prunes, plums, and raisins). Some of the more popular imperial stouts of today include a hoppy balance in the finish. Stouts - Sweet Stout - The sweet stout category includes both “milk”(or “cream”) and “oatmeal” stouts. They are thus named because they are brewed with lactose or oatmeal to increase their sweetness and complexity. Both tend to have roasted grain and coffee aromas and flavors, and the milk stouts often include chocolate malts in their profile. Their color is typically dark brown to black along with a rich tan to brown creamy head. While both are malty stouts, the milk stouts tend to be sweeter than oatmeal stouts, as they normally contain more unfermented sugars. The body of any sweet stout is rich, full, smooth, and sometimes silky.

hopped but not strong enough in alcohol content to be imperial stouts) are classified under the catch-all “stout” style and vary significantly in roast and hop character.

Strong Ale - The strong ale category includes ales of essentially any style with higher alcohol levels (generally at least 7%) than what is common for that style. The amount of alcohol can be quite high in a strong ale (over 20% in some cases). The category is essentially a catch-all category and incorporates multiple base styles into the group, except for those styles that explicitly have their own strong (often “imperial” or “double”) category. The target of strong ales should not be overpowering and harsh flavors, but instead an enhanced overall quality from the additional alcohol.

GIVE THE GIFT OF BEER! Last minute Christmas shopping? Having trouble with a couple of stocking stuffers? No worries, give the gift of beer. How about turning your friends and family on to some great craft beer? The best way to do that is pick up a couple of singles and drop one in their stocking. Or get a six-pack and divide it up, or create mix and match six-packs for several friends. There are plenty of great places to get these bottles. Of course, Papago, Tops and Sun Devil immediately come to mind. But there is Magnum’s in North Phoenix, and BevMo and Total Wine always have a great selection. You can also start finding great beer in some of the grocery stores. Whole Foods in Chandler has always had a great selection, but check out the other Whole Foods as well; and don’t forget Sprouts. If you haven’t checked out Sunflower lately, make a point of getting there real soon. They have just re-done their beer sections and it looks better than ever. AJ’s Fine Foods is always a great source of good beer. You can even start finding a larger selection of craft beer in certain stores of the larger chains. Look for great beer to start showing up in several Safeways and Bashas as well as those Albertson’s stores that have been carrying good beer for a while. There you have it, a not so comprehensive look at places to get the gift of beer for this holiday season. Go ahead, turn somebody on to craft beer…and get something for yourself while you’re at it.

Coldplay Quick to Isolate Themselves in Studio

Ne-Yo Eager to Reunite ‘Girls Aloud’

Coldplay sometimes forgets there are actually “other people in the world” when they are doing their thing in the studio.

Ne-Yo wants to reunite Girls Aloud. The ‘Beautiful Monster’ hitmaker is keen to write songs for the girl band - consisting of Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts - even though they haven’t worked together for over a year, because he wants them to put their differences behind them and get back together.

The ‘Viva La Vida’ rockers have spent much of the last year working on their fifth album, and said they have to make sure they don’t get too absorbed in themselves and their recording process. Singer Chris Martin recently stated: “Sometimes you can get very institutionalized in the studio. You can forget you’re going to have to play this for other people. That’s when music can get a bit silly.” Guitarist Jonny Buckland added: “You can forget that there are actually other people in the world.” The album is being made by the band which also features bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion - alongside two producers, Brian Eno

and Markus Dravs. Chris and Jonny explained how they fulfil very different roles in working with the band. “Brian is very much the sower of seeds, ideas, experimenting and liberating,” said Chris. “Markus’ job is to come in after all that has been done and sculpt it into some kind of releasable format. They’re very much like a tag team and we’re very lucky to have them.” Jonny added: “At the moment we’re working with Marcus on the sculpture bit.” Coldplay’s as-yet-untitled fifth album is set to be released next year.

He recently stated: “It’s Christmas, time for putting whatever dramas you have behind and making sweet music. I’m a huge fan of curvy Kimberley Walsh and I’d love to do something with them all. “Let’s make some hits, girls. Give me a call. I’m always up for making music, it’s something we’ve talked about.” Girls Aloud last performed together in September 2009, supporting Coldplay at London’s Wembley Stadium,

but the girls have since soured as they have all worked on different projects. While Cheryl, Kimberley, Nicola and Sarah are said to still be close friends, they are currently not in contact with Nadine and it was recently revealed they had hadn’t spoken to her in over a year. However, all members have insisted they will get back together, but just don’t know when.
