Nick@ Night By Nick Connell AMERICAN BUFFALO at Chyro Arts Venue in Scottsdale. David Mamet’s piercing dialogue and storytelling are alive and well in the Chyro Arts Production of AMERICAN BUFFALO in Scottsdale. Director Michael Peck has fashioned a personal version of this timeless piece- the criminal and immoral nature of American business. Or, ‘Chasing the Mark’, as the old carneys used to say. This story revolves around Don, the owner of a resale shop, played with mercy and compassion by the burley Trevor Clevenger. Trevor is the glue in this hustle by three, who are in the hunt for one more big score- right from the headlines of the Arizona Republic. But he needs help to pull this caper off, and his willing accomplish is Bobby, his junkie sidekick. Played with a delicate and neurotic touch by Travis Russell, Bobby leads us to the coin of plenty only to be derailed by Teach, played by Walt Pedano. Walt is the real deal in this right or wrong hustle that will keep you guessing who’s the real sucker? See American Buffalo, it’s loaded with great performances that would make Mamet proud! Through February 13. Tickets 480-258-2329 or www.Chyro.org “13” A NEW Musical Valley Youth Theatre at the Herberger Theater Center. Bobb Cooper and the crew at Valley Youth Theatre are to be commended for bringing Tony Award winning composer Jason Brown’s new musical “13” to Phoenix for its Arizona première. It’s a hit show with a story full of love, humor and some great song writing the opening night audiences loved! Evan is our protagonist, a young Jewish teenager about to experience a life changing move from New York City to Indiana (“The Lamest Place in the World”). Now he must complete his Bar Mitzvah, at 13, in a land of strangers and plenty of peer pressure. Any body remembers their awkward teens? Playing Evan with goodness and charm is Josh Hedeby. Josh was lovable the moment he stepped on stage and became the brain. But he was not alone in this “What it Means to be a Friend” teenage musical adventure. Sharing the limelight and coming of age with talent galore is Clare Emmert as Patrice, Maxx Carlisle-King as Archie, Adam Moffit as Brett, Abbie Maynard as Kendra, Sasha Peralta-Ramos as Lucy, Ashalee Torrey as Cassie and E J Dorring as Richie. This whole ensemble deserves a standing ovation for energetically selling out a great new musical score for audiences to enjoy! Through February 13th tickets 602-252-8497 or www.VYT.com PETER AND THE WOLF Childsplay Theatre at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Childsplay Theatre has brought together a wonderful musical play adapted from the Sergei Prokofiev story, PETER AND THE WOLF, for young audiences. This fun and cute production directed by David Saar, is a joy as we follow the lessons in love of Peter and his friends. Starring as Peter is Jason Powell. Jason is fearless as he learns the lessons of wolf and try’s to set the perfect trap. Keeping Peter on his toes throughout this story of innocence is Andres Alcala as the darling Duck and Huntsman, Michelle Cunneen as the bright and fluffy Bird, Kelsi Zahl as the purfect Cat, and Jon Gentry as the crafty and insightful Wolf. Grab the kids and call a friend to see this gentle and entertaining story for the whole family! Through March 13. Tickets 480-350-2822 or www.Childsplayaz. org. KUDOS to Arizona Opera for its stunning and passionate production of LA BOHEME. And to Scottsdale Center for the Arts for GARRISON KEILOR’S one night performance at Celebrity Theatre. 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee presented by ASU Herberger Institute fro Design and the Arts Evelyn Smith Music Theatre Friday – Saturday 7:30pm Sunday 2pm Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. It’s a hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Before every performance, four audience volunteers are recruited to participate on-stage as guest spellers. Each new foursome guarantees a new set of hilarious and unexpected experiences - one night is just as unique as the one before it.

Fuddy Meers presented by Nearly Naked Theatre Phoenix Little Theatre Through February 13, 2010 Thursday – Saturday 8pm Sunday 6pm This poignant and brutal new comedy traces one woman’s attempt to regain her memory while surrounded by a curiocabinet of alarmingly bizarre characters. Claire has a rare form of psychogenic amnesia that erases her memory whenever she goes to sleep. This morning, like all mornings, she wakes as her chipper husband comes in with a cup of coffee, explains her condition, hands her a book filled with all sorts of essential information, and he disappears into the shower. From there her day becomes a harrowing rollercoaster ride as she meets a limping, lisping, half-blind, half-deaf man in a ski mask, her perpetually stoned son, her gibberish-speaking mother, a dimwitted thug with a foul-mouthed hand puppet and a claustrophobic lady-cop. It’s one hilarious turn after another, through the day of an amnesiac trying to decipher her fractured life.

Review by Stan Robinson We’ve all had to read Leo Tolstoy’s classic “War and Peace” or have seen the classic film directed by the legendary King Vidor in 1956. It starred Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer. We’ve all seen photos of the bearded author taken in his later years, but know little of his private life. “The Last Station” gives us a glimpse into the last four years of his life from 1910 to his death in 1914… We are brought into 1910 and to Tolstoy’s world in a period historical drama that illustrates Russian author
Writer/director Brian Pulido, referred to frequently as ‘the next Roger Corman’ as he masters the art of ‘B-movies’, subtly sketches characters with the nuances we all know in our work-a-day lives, with a jolt of psychological horror along the way! As regular readers know, I’m fond of movie taglines; ‘In Skull City, Death is the least of your problems…’ is the unexpected for the Graves sisters. Megan (Clare Grant) and Abby (Jillian Murray) Graves are inseparable sisters that couldn’t be less alike. Megan just graduated Arizona State University with a degree in marketing. She’s self-assured, naturally attractive, with a ‘rock chick’ air and a black belt in martial arts that she likes to use. Abby on the other hand, barely graduated high school. She’s cute with a ‘Hot Topic Goth’ flair, a bit caustic, and afraid of her own

We learn that the Countess Sofya (Helen Mirren), his wife and muse, uses every trick of seduction on her husband’s loyal disciple (Paul Giamatti), whom she believes was the person responsible for Tolstoy signing a new will that leaves his work and property to the Russian people. “The Last Station” is an engaging film with various plot lines as the picture is painted of each of the closet people to Tolstoy while we examine their motives. BEER! What is “Extreme” Beer? by Chuck Noll Brewers and consumers alike often throw around the phrase “Extreme Beer”…but what does it mean? Are there certain criteria that make a beer extreme, similar to a style definition for a stout or Hefeweizen, or is it something else that makes a beer extreme? With the Strong Beer Festival coming up in mid February, it’s a good time to examine that topic. Brewers are by nature a creative bunch. They like to take recipes and tinker with them until they have put their own unique signature on them. This has been the case ever since the first brewer made the first beer. Exploring the limits of styles and ingredients and then pushing through them is what excites most of these men and women that put on the rubber boots every morning, fire up the kettles and labor sometimes for 12 hours or more over a batch of beer. Amongst all the cleaning and lifting

bags of malt and timing hop additions to make, in most cases, the same beer they have made a hundred times before, its those occasional special beers that stimulate the mind and get them thinking about what they are brewing. But what about the first extreme beer? When was it produced, what did it contain, what did it taste like? Was it a Belgian quad, extreme with its excesses of malt and candi sugar? Perhaps a spontaneously fermented lambic to which whole cherries including pit and stem were added to make a Kriek…a funky, sour, nutty at times (thanks to the disintegration of the stems and pits), cherry flavored bit of heaven that leaves some in ecstasy and others looking for a pitcher of water. Any of these could have been considered extreme at the time. When Vinnie Cirluzo at Russian River Brewing Company created Pliny the Elder, arguably the first Imperial IPA, it was a huge step for the style. Bitter, citrusy and aromatic, this was a beer like none other. Several years later Pliny the elder has begat Pliny Continued on Page 24

A WORLD-CLASS APPROACH TO CELEBRATING BEER
ANNUA
The 10th Annual Strong Beer Festival / Saturday February 13th, 2010 The Strong Beer Festival continues to impress here in the Valley, bringing Arizonans a truly enjoyable afternoon of unique beer and fun. Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Strong Beer Festival was first organized in 2001 as a way to allow individual brewers to showcase specialty beers in one convenient location. This allowed the public to sample small “tastes” of these beers without having to travel all over the state. It also gave the beer drinking populace an opportunity to speak directly with many of the brewmasters who actually create these beers. Over the years, the Strong Beer Festival has grown to feature “strong beers” while also offering many other different types and styles of beer for tasting. The festival has been moved this year to Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix. This move makes the event more centrally located in the metropolitan area. It’s now only a four block walk from

the Roosevelt/Central light rail station to provide a transportation alternative. The festival provides musical entertainment as well including the 2 Tone Lizard Kings who will entertain visitors with their fun and upbeat music. A good selection of food items will be available for purchase as well. The Arizona Craft Brewers Guild was established in 1999. This non-profit organization has been dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of the craft brewing industry in Arizona. The guild is dedicated to maintaining the quality and image of Arizona-produced beers through the education of consumers, retailers, distributors and brewers. The guild strives to protect the interests of Arizona brewers and consumers through networking and communication between members and other industry related entities and legislative and

governing bodies. The brewer’s guild also encourages responsible consumption of brewery products. Modern craft brewing began in Arizona after the state legislature passed laws in 1987. Two laws were passed, both providing relief from the traditional three-tier distribution system. One allowed a restaurant to both produce and sell beer, making brew pubs legal. The other allowed a brewery to also distribute its products directly to bars, restaurants and the public, which made microbreweries legal. Over the years, these laws have been changed and revised to accommodate the growing craft beer industry. In many cases the distinction between brew pubs and microbreweries has become somewhat blurred to the casual observer.

ago. They are now available in 24 states and have just announced their expansion into Florida, where the only skiing is on the water.
Arizona Loves Breckenridge Brews! Back in the 1980’s Richard Squire had a dream…to ski all day and drink great beer all night. Living in Breckenridge Colorado, the skiing was not a problem. Sadly, there were very few microbreweries, so drinking great beer was an issue. Richard solved that problem by starting to home brew his own beer. Now he had a different problem, his home brewed beers were so popular with his fellow ski bums he was convinced to open a brewpub which severely limited his ski time.

Fortunately for us, he decided to stay with his brewpub dream. And since 1990, Breckenridge Brewery has turned out great beer and a great attitude. The brewery has expanded moving its production operations to Denver and opening up several other brewpubs throughout Colorado, but they stay true to their roots and continue to brew the great beers that Richard Squire was known for, après ski in Breckenridge. Expansion has ensued and they arrived in Arizona a few years
Arizona seems to love Breckenridge beers. Whether stopping at Buffalo Wild Wings in Gilbert on Elliot for an Avalanche Amber, Murphy’s Law for a Vanilla Porter or even a stop at the Yardhouse for an Agave Wheat, people are buying these beers and making them increasingly popular throughout the state. Six packs for home consumption are available in many locations including Tops, Sun Devil, Whole Foods, Sunflower Markets, BevMo and Total Wines. The release of their Lucky U IPA last summer drew huge crowds to Papago Brewing necessitating the tapping of a second keg. It’s not just great beers, but great people that make Breckenridge successful. Marketing Director Todd Thibault, known as “Tebo” to beer drinkers everywhere and frequently referred to as the Mayor of LoDo (Lower Downtown in Denver), makes regular visits to Arizona to promote the product and is always up for a good time. His personality and enthusiasm for craft beer, especially Breckenridge is infectious. Look for him next time he is in town, or if you’re in Denver, ask about him at either of the Breckenridge pubs. Tell him you heard about him in AZ Weekly.

style that are sitting on the shelf just waiting for a consumer to take them home. Several years back a panel discussion was held at Papago Brewing featuring brewers from all over the state and across the country. Included in that group were Adam Avery (Avery Brewing) and Tomme Arthur (Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey). Adam had a simple definition of extreme beer, “it is anything that won’t sell”. He, of course, was overstating the case, meaning a product that won’t appeal to the everyday drinker but is fun for the brewer to make and will be embraced by a small handful of enthusiasts who will lap up every drop and beg for the next batch to be made. Tomme had a different take on extreme beers. Whereas, extreme
beers are sometimes a race to make the highest alcohol product, Tomme took a different approach. Up until his appearance, we had sampled beers starting at 9% ABV and going all the way up to somewhere near 17%. The beer from Pizza Port (where Tomme still worked prior to starting up his current brewery) was a simple, relatively low alcohol (6.3%) entry named Mo Betta Bretta. This American Wild Ale wasn’t big on the ABV, but it had a diversity of flavor like none of the others. Produced with a wild yeast strain rather than the typical strains used by most brewers, this beer started with a tingling on the tongue and seemed to touch all the different taste bud receptors. This was an amazing beer and Tomme presented it simply by saying that Extreme should be about flavor, not about alcohol content. Sometimes less is more.

The 200 was just released and it is an amazing still beer weighing in at over 19% ABV with some Agave nectar thrown in for a nice touch. Aged in oak, this is a special treat and not available everywhere. Sun Up has regular availability of their extreme styles
at their brewpub on Camelback at Third Street, and every once in a while a couple of kegs slip into the market. Thunder Canyon in Tucson has some interesting beers on at their brewpub from time to time as well. We also get our share of extreme beers from out of state. Belgian White with lavender added, an Autumn seasonal made with Yams, and a holiday beer series that goes through the twelve days of Christmas culminating in an incredible vertical tasting 10 more years from now certainly qualify them as brewing in extreme styles. And what about more traditional brewers like Big Sky and Lost Coast, known for more everyday styles but they still can bring some game with their special releases. Even the mead makers get into the extreme styles. Mead can be a fascinating product in itself, but David Myers at Redstone has kicked it up a notch by creating Nectar of the Hops, a sparkling mead with hops added to provide a fascinating counterpoint to the sweetness of the honey used in the mead. The Night Owl BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA
Revolver Takes a Shot at Scottsdale. By Maria Tourtchaninova If you walked by the old SIX location last Friday night, you may have noticed an outside crowd. Is this a fashion forward colt? You may have asked yourself. And what are the perks to joining? Well that was not quite the case as it was the grand opening of Revolver, the newest edition to the Scottsdale night scene. If you were able to elbow your way through the entry crowd like I was, then upon arrival, you can agree with me that the party was worth the bruises. The atmosphere can be best described as a room full of ladies and gents in classic black attire. I should have worn white…and yet the crowd only added to the sophistication of Revolver itself. Unlike the flashy, glowy, new-wave of club décor, Revolver has kept its morals, which reminds me of James Bond, if he were more of a cowboy. Rich, earthy colors, ivory and brown leather sofas, clean cut lines and dim lights. All contrasted by new-age flat screens over the bars showcasing blue skies and of course, wall art of well revolvers-and Clint Eastwood. The walls that divided SIX are gone and replaced with …air. That’s right! Room to breath in this elegantly edgy atmosphere. Don’t get me wrong; this isn’t a cigar bar or anything. Not with the new Timbaland track bumping from the speakers. It’s high energy
if you want it to be, but it doesn’t impose it on you. In other words there are no disco balls, flashing lights or fog machines forcing you into delirium. It’s a natural place, what you do with it is up to you. Owner Steve McDonald is proud of the lowkey atmosphere, an organic environment in a sense, where his guests can come in to unwind. On that note, mid-price drinks! Wait, in Scottsdale? You mean I don’t have to do my usual 30k millionaire look to kick it here? Doesn’t look like it. Here’s another Fun Fact: if you’re having an ugly day, lose the hat and step into Revolver. The soft ambient lighting throughout the club makes you look as lively as the day you found out the second Twilight movie was in theaters…or was that just me. If it is possible to be drunk in a club AND be at peace of mind, then we have found it. Come check out Revolver Tuesday-Sunday 7-2pm. 480.946.2005.

‘Saints and Colts Set the Stage for Super Bowl XLIV’
“He’s entitled to his opinion and why wouldn’t he be rooting for them?” Bethea said of Obama’s decision to cheer for New Orleans. » Last meeting: Peyton Manning threw three touchdown passes as the Colts handled the Saints with ease in a 41-10 home victory on Kickoff Weekend in 2007. » Series: The series is even at 5-5. » Last week: The Colts held the Jets’ top-ranked rushing attack to 86 yards in a 30-17 win at home. ... The Saints advanced on the leg of Garret Hartley, whose 40-yarder in overtime sealed the 31-28 win over Minnesota.
With New Orleans about to make its first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, memories of Hurricane Katrina still lingering and close ties between the team and the city’s rebuilding effort, Colts players understand why the Saints are this year’s sentimental favorite. They just want to play the role of spoiler. “There’s a reason America is pulling for New Orleans, and why wouldn’t they? They’ve been through a lot,” Indy safety Antoine Bethea said. “Sports tend to pull people together, so it’s commendable for New Orleans to be, as I guess you’d say, America’s team right now. But at the same time, we’re going to go out there as the Indianapolis Colts and play ball.” The reach of New Orleans’ fans goes all the way to the highest levels of the White House.

The Colts know they’re still the favorite in at least one state, Indiana.
“You know, I think both teams are terrific,” President Barack Obama told ABC News. “I guess I am rooting a little bit for the Saints as the underdog, partly just because when
A potential shootout: Only one player threw for more touchdowns than Manning (33) in the regular season -- Drew Brees, with a leagueleading 34. Indy’s second-ranked passing offense will be pitted against the Saints’ 26th-ranked pass defense, while the Saints’ fourth-ranked aerial attack will contend with the 14th-ranked pass defense of the Colts. There should be no shortage of touchdowns through the air in this one. The experience factor: Much of the attention will be focused on Manning attempting to cement his legacy with a second Lombardi Trophy, but the Colts have a number of important players who were with the team for Super Bowl XLI. Among the Colts players who own Super Bowl rings are Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Gary Brackett, Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis and Jeff Saturday. The Saints, on the other hand, have limited Super Bowl experience. Randall Gay played in two of the Patriots’ four visits to the big game, starting against the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, while Darren Sharper was a rookie with the Packers when they lost to the Broncos following the 1997 season. ...Continued from Page 36 Speed vs. speed: With the likes of Reggie Bush and Devery Henderson, the Saints field one of the quickest offenses in the league. But the Colts counter with a defense that relies more on its speed than it does size. The Colts have young legs in the likes of WRs Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, but they will have to be wary of ball-hawking Saints safety Sharper, who can still find that extra gear in his 13th season.

Are you any good? We look good, we feel good and we bring back the party Van Halen started. Maybe you should ask the competition… Name some of your best cover tunes? They’re all cover tunes baby! Just don’t ask for any Van Hagar. We have been known to throw out some Michael Jackson and Rick Springfield. What do you think is most important when doing a cover tune, exact reproduction, or creative interpretation of a familiar tune? As a “tribute” band the audience expects to hear what’s on the record so we have no choice but to bring an exact reproduction, both visually and sonically or we’re going to get called out…and you better be the best if you want to run with the devil.
Cover Band Profile: Fan Halen Appearing at SKYE, February 12th Band Name: FAN HALEN, World’s Most Authentic Tribute to Van Halen Band Members: Brian Geller Derek Fuller Larry Cornwall George DuBose
Instruments: Lead Vocals Guitar Drums Bass
Web Sites for Band: www.fanhalen.net myspace.com/fanhalentribute http://www.facebook.com/fanhalen Why did this band get started? Plain and simple – for the love of Van Halen. Everyone loves Van Halen and everyone has a bit off VH in em, we just have to sometimes find it. Back in the days of records, the sound of Van Halen was meant to spill out all over your stereo and ruin the rest of your record collection. So why not continue to bring the love to the masses? What’s the story behind the name? Typically in the wonderful world of the tribute band industry – bands pick song names or album titles as their band name. “Jump” brought up thoughts of white hip hop, while a name like “Panama” makes one think of salsa dancing. “FAN HALEN” says it all! We are four guys that are truly “Fanatics” about Van Halen and when it’s on a marquee you know exactly what to expect!
Who gets the most Groupies and why? If nobody gets any, do you have a plan to change this? Groupie information is on a need to know basis and I pride myself on interpersonal communications. Do they exist in the tribute band world or is a figment of your imagination? Will the lovely lady who is school teacher by day be willing to suck the air out of the bottom of Diamond Dave’s cuffs? I look at it like this my friends, the guy who said that money doesn’t buy happiness didn’t know where to go shopping… Tell us a secret about the band (just between us and 125,000 readers): It’s really Jack Daniels in the bottle and not iced tea - this ain’t no Motley Crue tribute band. And just between you and I, the singer is batting 500 at shows below the Mason-Dixon line. An underwater volcanic eruption spews boiling water into the cruise ship you’re playing on, and wouldn’t you know it, right in the middle of your set! Being upright, noble folk, what music would you play to calm everyone down as they boil to death? Well since it is Van Halen – one would think the fabled “Eruption” solo would do just right but instead I propose a bit of “Ice Cream Man.” It reminds us of summer time, cool and refreshing and all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy… What is the official drink of the band? By the time I hit the stage in Arizona I plan to stand up for rock and roll. In fact by the time we
CASH FOR LP’S
Who is the craziest band member and why? The lead singer of course! Why do you think I got the job? I would just like to say that after all these years of rock n roll, heavy drinking, bright lights and late nights that I still don’t need glasses…I drink right out of the bottle. What do you do different that kicks ass over other cover bands? Unlike other bands that inform their audience that they are there to pay “tribute” to the band they cover we take the approach when we hit the stage we ARE Van Halen. If you saw VH back in ‘82 and then see us you will be hanging with the band after the show, buying us beers and telling us how we brought you back to your youth. If you didn’t see VH in ‘82 then ask your Mom. What advice would you give a startup cover band? Pick a band you love and one where they guys dig the music and their girlfriends want to dance and sneak off into the corner with the singer. What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? Cat juggling is a big problem in our industry. But also, and this is a motto I live by so pay close attention, its not who wants to sleep with you; it’s who wants to sleep with you again. What’s the most difficult aspect of trying to make it as a cover band? Band drama, band drama, and band drama. And is anyone gonna help the drummer carry his kit? What do you think will happen to your band in the next 2 years? You know history has a way of repeating itself sometimes so I would suspect the band will change singers a couple of times and the guitar player will replace our bass player with his son. What will people see when you perform live? Great music, a little gyrating (maybe a lot of gyrating), two handed guitar tapping, drum solos, way too tight spandex pants, furry boots, and a glazed donut and a bottle of anything to go!

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? So many, would you like wig flying off story or the mom and daughter team on stage? My favorite took place this past August in Hawaii. What’s the hardest part about doing cover music? There’s nothing hard about it – it’s rock n roll, it’s a way of life. For some reason people ask me all the time about marriage and why is it so difficult (not that I should be asked considering my track record) and I tell them there are three rings to marriage; the engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering.

Your brain feels no pain. There are no nerves that register pain within the brain itself. Because of this, neurosurgeons can probe the brain while a patient is conscious (what fun!). By doing this, they can use feedback from the patient to identify important regions, such as those used for speech, or visualization.
