Shen Wei Dance Arts captivated the world with its imaginative performance at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Under the visionary leadership of Artistic Director Shen Wei, this dynamic young company melds modern dance with theater, Chinese opera, philosophy, art and architecture. Shen Wei Dance Arts will mark its Scottsdale debut performing selections from The Re- Triptych, including Part I: Tibet, a deeply personal and spiritual dance incorporating traditional Tibetan chants and a stunning, full-stage mandala, and Part III: The New Silk Road, a celebration of China’s vast and divergent religious traditions, languages and cultural histories.

Review by Stan Robinson We’ve all had to read Leo Tolstoy’s classic “War and Peace” or have seen the classic film directed by the legendary King Vidor in 1956. It starred Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer. We’ve all seen photos of the bearded author taken in his later years, but know little of his private life. “The Last Station” gives us a glimpse into the last four years of his life from 1910 to his death in 1914… We are brought into 1910 and to Tolstoy’s world in a period historical drama that illustrates Russian author

BEER! What is “Extreme” Beer? by Chuck Noll Brewers and consumers alike often throw around the phrase “Extreme Beer”…but what does it mean? Are there certain criteria that make a beer extreme, similar to a style definition for a stout or Hefeweizen, or is it something else that makes a beer extreme? With the Strong Beer Festival coming up in mid February, it’s a good time to examine that topic. Brewers are by nature a creative bunch. They like to take recipes and tinker with them until they have put their own unique signature on them. This has been the case ever since the first brewer made the first beer. Exploring the limits of styles and ingredients and then pushing through them is what excites most of these men and women that put on the rubber boots every morning, fire up the kettles and labor sometimes for 12 hours or more over a batch of beer. Amongst all the cleaning and lifting

bags of malt and timing hop additions to make, in most cases, the same beer they have made a hundred times before, its those occasional special beers that stimulate the mind and get them thinking about what they are brewing. But what about the first extreme beer? When was it produced, what did it contain, what did it taste like? Was it a Belgian quad, extreme with its excesses of malt and candi sugar? Perhaps a spontaneously fermented lambic to which whole cherries including pit and stem were added to make a Kriek…a funky, sour, nutty at times (thanks to the disintegration of the stems and pits), cherry flavored bit of heaven that leaves some in ecstasy and others looking for a pitcher of water. Any of these could have been considered extreme at the time. When Vinnie Cirluzo at Russian River Brewing Company created Pliny the Elder, arguably the first Imperial IPA, it was a huge step for the style. The 10th Annual Strong Beer Festival / Saturday February 13th, 2010 The Strong Beer Festival continues to impress here in the Valley, bringing Arizonans a truly enjoyable afternoon of unique beer and fun. Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Strong Beer Festival was first organized in 2001 as a way to allow individual brewers to showcase specialty beers in one convenient location. This allowed the public to sample small “tastes” of these beers without having to travel all over the state. It also gave the beer drinking populace an opportunity to speak directly with many of the brewmasters who actually create these beers. Over the years, the Strong Beer Festival has grown to feature “strong beers” while also offering many other different types and styles of beer for tasting. The festival has been moved this year to Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix. This move makes the event more centrally located in the metropolitan area. It’s now only a four block walk from

the Roosevelt/Central light rail station to provide a transportation alternative. The festival provides musical entertainment as well including the 2 Tone Lizard Kings who will entertain visitors with their fun and upbeat music. A good selection of food items will be available for purchase as well. The Arizona Craft Brewers Guild was established in 1999. This non-profit organization has been dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of the craft brewing industry in Arizona. The guild is dedicated to maintaining the quality and image of Arizona-produced beers through the education of consumers, retailers, distributors and brewers. The guild strives to protect the interests of Arizona brewers and consumers through networking and communication between members and other industry related entities and legislative and

governing bodies. The brewer’s guild also encourages responsible consumption of brewery products. Modern craft brewing began in Arizona after the state legislature passed laws in 1987. Two laws were passed, both providing relief from the traditional three-tier distribution system. One allowed a restaurant to both produce and sell beer, making brew pubs legal. The other allowed a brewery to also distribute its products directly to bars, restaurants and the public, which made microbreweries legal. Over the years, these laws have been changed and revised to accommodate the growing craft beer industry. In many cases the distinction between brew pubs and microbreweries has become somewhat blurred to the casual observer.

Arizona Loves Breckenridge Brews! Back in the 1980’s Richard Squire had a dream…to ski all day and drink great beer all night. Living in Breckenridge Colorado, the skiing was not a problem. Sadly, there were very few microbreweries, so drinking great beer was an issue. Richard solved that problem by starting to home brew his own beer. Now he had a different problem, his home brewed beers were so popular with his fellow ski bums he was convinced to open a brewpub which severely limited his ski time.

Fortunately for us, he decided to stay with his brewpub dream. And since 1990, Breckenridge Brewery has turned out great beer and a great attitude. The brewery has expanded moving its production operations to Denver and opening up several other brewpubs throughout Colorado, but they stay true to their roots and continue to brew the great beers that Richard Squire was known for, après ski in Breckenridge. Expansion has ensued and they arrived in Arizona a few years

Arizona seems to love Breckenridge beers. Whether stopping at Buffalo Wild Wings in Gilbert on Elliot for an Avalanche Amber, Murphy’s Law for a Vanilla Porter or even a stop at the Yardhouse for an Agave Wheat, people are buying these beers and making them increasingly popular throughout the state. Six packs for home consumption are available in many locations including Tops, Sun Devil, Whole Foods, Sunflower Markets, BevMo and Total Wines. The release of their Lucky U IPA last summer drew huge crowds to Papago Brewing necessitating the tapping of a second keg. It’s not just great beers, but great people that make Breckenridge successful. Marketing Director Todd Thibault, known as “Tebo” to beer drinkers everywhere and frequently referred to as the Mayor of LoDo (Lower Downtown in Denver), makes regular visits to Arizona to promote the product and is always up for a good time. style that are sitting on the shelf just waiting for a consumer to take them home. Several years back a panel discussion was held at Papago Brewing featuring brewers from all over the state and across the country. Included in that group were Adam Avery (Avery Brewing) and Tomme Arthur (Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey). Adam had a simple definition of extreme beer, “it is anything that won’t sell”. He, of course, was overstating the case, meaning a product that won’t appeal to the everyday drinker but is fun for the brewer to make and will be embraced by a small handful of enthusiasts who will lap up every drop and beg for the next batch to be made. Tomme had a different take on extreme beers. Whereas, extreme

beers are sometimes a race to make the highest alcohol product, Tomme took a different approach. Up until his appearance, we had sampled beers starting at 9% ABV and going all the way up to somewhere near 17%. The beer from Pizza Port (where Tomme still worked prior to starting up his current brewery) was a simple, relatively low alcohol (6.3%) entry named Mo Betta Bretta. This American Wild Ale wasn’t big on the ABV, but it had a diversity of flavor like none of the others. Produced with a wild yeast strain rather than the typical strains used by most brewers, this beer started with a tingling on the tongue and seemed to touch all the different taste bud receptors. This was an amazing beer and Tomme presented it simply by saying that Extreme should be about flavor, not about alcohol content. Sometimes less is more.

Up do. Sonoran releases their 100 Batch series every, you guessed it, 100 batches they brew. The 200 was just released and it is an amazing still beer weighing in at over 19% ABV with some Agave nectar thrown in for a nice touch. Aged in oak, this is a special treat and not available everywhere. Sun Up has regular availability of their extreme styles

at their brewpub on Camelback at Third Street, and every once in a while a couple of kegs slip into the market. Thunder Canyon in Tucson has some interesting beers on at their brewpub from time to time as well. We also get our share of extreme beers from out of state. The regular releases from Ballast Point of Sculpin, Dorado and Victory at Sea have just started but are being well received. Also look for a new batch of Lost Abbey Brandy Barrel Aged Angel’s Share on the shelves shortly. Avery Brewing is known for their big beers with big flavor, Adam Avery is scheduled to make a rare Arizona appearance on April 15th and 16th for a Tax Your Liver With Avery party at Papago, followed by Demons and Dictators at Moto. Revolver Takes a Shot at Scottsdale. By Maria Tourtchaninova If you walked by the old SIX location last Friday night, you may have noticed an outside crowd. Is this a fashion forward colt? You may have asked yourself. And what are the perks to joining? Well that was not quite the case as it was the grand opening of Revolver, the newest edition to the Scottsdale night scene. If you were able to elbow your way through the entry crowd like I was, then upon arrival, you can agree with me that the party was worth the bruises. The atmosphere can be best described as a room full of ladies and gents in classic black attire. I should have worn white…and yet the crowd only added to the sophistication of Revolver itself. Unlike the flashy, glowy, new-wave of club décor, Revolver has kept its morals, which reminds me of James Bond, if he were more of a cowboy. Rich, earthy colors, ivory and brown leather sofas, clean cut lines and dim lights. All contrasted by new-age flat screens over the bars showcasing blue skies and of course, wall art of well revolvers-and Clint Eastwood. The walls that divided SIX are gone and replaced with …air. That’s right! Room to breath in this elegantly edgy atmosphere. Don’t get me wrong; this isn’t a cigar bar or anything. Not with the new Timbaland track bumping from the speakers. It’s high energy

if you want it to be, but it doesn’t impose it on you. In other words there are no disco balls, flashing lights or fog machines forcing you into delirium. It’s a natural place, what you do with it is up to you. Owner Steve McDonald is proud of the lowkey atmosphere, an organic environment in a sense, where his guests can come in to unwind. On that note, mid-price drinks! Wait, in Scottsdale? You mean I don’t have to do my usual 30k millionaire look to kick it here? Doesn’t look like it. Here’s another Fun Fact: if you’re having an ugly day, lose the hat and step into Revolver. The soft ambient lighting throughout the club makes you look as lively as the day you found out the second Twilight movie was in theaters…or was that just me. Everyone loves Van Halen and everyone has a bit off VH in em, we just have to sometimes find it. Back in the days of records, the sound of Van Halen was meant to spill out all over your stereo and ruin the rest of your record collection. So why not continue to bring the love to the masses? What’s the story behind the name? Typically in the wonderful world of the tribute band industry – bands pick song names or album titles as their band name. “Jump” brought up thoughts of white hip hop, while a name like “Panama” makes one think of salsa dancing. “FAN HALEN” says it all! We are four guys that are truly “Fanatics” about Van Halen and when it’s on a marquee you know exactly what to expect!

Who gets the most Groupies and why? If nobody gets any, do you have a plan to change this? Groupie information is on a need to know basis and I pride myself on interpersonal communications. Do they exist in the tribute band world or is a figment of your imagination? Will the lovely lady who is school teacher by day be willing to suck the air out of the bottom of Diamond Dave’s cuffs? I look at it like this my friends, the guy who said that money doesn’t buy happiness didn’t know where to go shopping… Tell us a secret about the band (just between us and 125,000 readers): It’s really Jack Daniels in the bottle and not iced tea - this ain’t no Motley Crue tribute band. And just between you and I, the singer is batting 500 at shows below the Mason-Dixon line. An underwater volcanic eruption spews boiling water into the cruise ship you’re playing on, and wouldn’t you know it, right in the middle of your set! Being upright, noble folk, what music would you play to calm everyone down as they boil to death? Well since it is Van Halen – one would think the fabled “Eruption” solo would do just right but instead I propose a bit of “Ice Cream Man.” It reminds us of summer time, cool and refreshing and all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy… What is the official drink of the band? By the time I hit the stage in Arizona I plan to stand up for rock and roll. In fact by the time we

Who is the craziest band member and why? The lead singer of course! Why do you think I got the job? I would just like to say that after all these years of rock n roll, heavy drinking, bright lights and late nights that I still don’t need glasses…I drink right out of the bottle. What do you do different that kicks ass over other cover bands? Unlike other bands that inform their audience that they are there to pay “tribute” to the band they cover we take the approach when we hit the stage we ARE Van Halen. If you saw VH back in ‘82 and then see us you will be hanging with the band after the show, buying us beers and telling us how we brought you back to your youth. If you didn’t see VH in ‘82 then ask your Mom. What advice would you give a startup cover band? Pick a band you love and one where they guys dig the music and their girlfriends want to dance and sneak off into the corner with the singer. What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? Cat juggling is a big problem in our industry. But also, and this is a motto I live by so pay close attention, its not who wants to sleep with you; it’s who wants to sleep with you again. What’s the most difficult aspect of trying to make it as a cover band? Band drama, band drama, and band drama. And is anyone gonna help the drummer carry his kit? What do you think will happen to your band in the next 2 years? You know history has a way of repeating itself sometimes so I would suspect the band will change singers a couple of times and the guitar player will replace our bass player with his son. What will people see when you perform live? Great music, a little gyrating (maybe a lot of gyrating), two handed guitar tapping, drum solos, way too tight spandex pants, furry boots, and a glazed donut and a bottle of anything to go!
