THE SLEEPING BEAUTY

Sunday February 14 at Ballet Arizona

What could be more perfect than to indulge in the romance of the season with Ballet Arizona? True love awakens with a kiss, as Ballet Arizona presents its premiere of one of the best-known romantic fairy tales. Considered one of the greatest classical ballets, The Sleeping Beauty has enchanted audiences for more than 100 years with its brilliant choreography and unforgettable score by Tchaikovsky, performed live by The Phoenix Symphony. Don’t miss Princess Aurora, Prince Charming and a guest appearance by Little Red Riding Hood in this happily-ever-after fairytale!

This celebration of the mating game takes on the truths and myths behind the enigma known as “the relationship.” The revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance, and to those who have dared to ask, “Say, what are you doing Saturday night?” “I Love You...” is the longest-running Off-Broadway show in history, and plays to sold-out theatres wherever it is produced. In addition to its enormous success, the Off-Broadway production has been the site of 50 marriage proposals. This MET show has been so popular, that this will mark its 4th consecutive production. There will be a special Valentine’s Day night performance of the show. “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” is produced in cooperation with R & H Theatricals. Nick@ Night By Nick Connell I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE Mesa Encore at Mesa Arts Center. Mesa Encore Theatre opened their new musical show, “I Love You, Your Perfect, Now Change” just in time for Valentine season. This production is charming and sweet as a rose with a box of chocolates-with plenty of fun, great music, and laughter mixed in for everyone to enjoy. This is a tale of the dating and mating scene that will surely remind valley audiences of their own adventures into the land of relationships. Leading our boy-girl romp through some hysterical and prophetic scenes are Jeffrey Davey and Brett Aiken as the guys, with Tracy Payne and Andi Watson bringing in the female perspective. ‘I Love You’ is full of songs and moments that will keep your smile dialed up all night including the roller coaster single life and songs for couples in “First Dates”, “A Stud and a Babe”, “Why, Cause I’m a Guy”, “I Will be Loved Tonight”, “He Called Me”, “Always the Bridesmaid”, “The Baby Song” “Marriage Tango”, “Waiting Trio” and “I Can Live with That”. ‘I Love You’ is the perfect valentine for you and your significant other-even if you’re not perfect. The fun continues through February 21st. For tickets call 480644-6500 or mesaartscenter.com. RFK: THE JOURNEY TO JUSTICE L.A. Theatre Works at Scottsdale Center for Arts Some producers and directors reach to great heights in choosing story and content to present rooted in the fabric of American history. Stories that are profound and revealing in ways that affect all of us due to our collective memories and consciousness. RFK: The Journey to Justice is an example of such brilliant work from the L.A. Theatre Works, presented at the Scottsdale Center for Performing arts this past weekend. Led by Susan Albert Loewenberg, Producing Director, and Director John Rubinstein, their production of “RFK” is astounding. This is the story and history of the Kennedy brothers from 1959 through 1968; John Kennedy’s short presidency, razor sharp focus on Robert(Bobby as we all knew him), the civil rights movement after his brother John is assassinated, and until Bobby’s own tragic death from a gunshot wound during the presidential campaign of 1968. This ‘footnote to history’ should be seen or heard by any student or citizen to understand the impact Bobby had on civil rights then, and now as we move forward in the time of Obama as our president. Making this story come to life with extraordinary performances were Michael Leydon Cambell as Burke Marshall, Philip Casnoff as John Kennedy, Henry Clarke as Robert Kennedy, Kyle Colerider-Krugh as Byron White, Kevin Daniels as Martin Luther King Jr., Ross Hellwig as Harris Wofford, Thomas Vincent Kelly as John Seigenthaler, Sheilynn Wactor as Coretta Scott King and John Wesley as Louis Martin. Thank God for visionary minds to bring us this enormous story at a time when critical thinking is needed more than ever. The great news is it’s recorded and will be available later this month on National Public Radio (NPR.com), 91.5 FM locally. Check local listings for air dates and time. OPENING THIS WEEK: Ballet Arizona’s SLEEPING BEAUTY at Symphony Hall; East Valley Children’s Theatre THE GOATS GRUFF at Mesa Arts Center. BREAK A LEG!

The Play About the Naked Guy presented by Stray Cat Theatre Tempe Performing Arts Center Through February 27, 2010 Thursday – Saturday 8pm Sunday 2pm Sex sells - but at what price? The Integrity Players, an off-off Broadway theatre company dedicated to faithfully presenting the ‘lesser known’ classics, is on the brink of shuttering. When a trio of artistically questionable though financially successful impresarios, responsible for such stage hits as Naked Boys Running Around Naked and Drunk Frat Boys Making Porn, offer to help save their company, an epic and hilarious battle between commercialism and artistic allegiance ensues. Appropriately enough, Nearly Naked’s Damon Dering is coming in to helm all the tasty, trashy fun of this merciless satire of the age old fight between art and commerce. Important Information: Show contains nudity and adult content.

En Route To Carnegie Hall

Mose Allison’s world-wide popularity dates from the ‘60s, when his mixture of a Delta-born blues nuance and his gift for writing a song with a sting, made him a prime source of inspiration for the UK’s new generation of blues/rock artists. Over the years, he has been lionized by the likes of Pete Townshend, Jack Bruce, Brian Auger and Georgie Fame. By the 70’s he was British rock’s most popular jazz musician. “Valentine’s Day”, Garry Marshall’s latest has hearts and stars! With Valentine’s Day approaching, director Garry Marshall takes us on visits with intertwining stories of couples and singles in Los Angeles. As the ‘break-up’ and ‘makeup’ events come into play, with the pressures and expectations of love, as the “day of love” approaches! The star-studded cast includes Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Hector Elizondo, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Carter

“The Wolfman”, a re-telling of the 1941 classic. The 1941 classic, starring Lon Chaney, Jr., “the man of many faces” as he’s fondly referred, gave us a tormented soul of a man, trying to stifle his inner urges, and find a cure for the ‘curse’ that has befallen him and his descendants. In this re-telling of the classic tale, Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro), a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother. He discovers a horrifying destiny for himself and the childhood that ended the night his mother died. He’s spent decades recovering and trying to forget. His life is interrupted when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing husband to be. Talbot returns home to join the search, and learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, as a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) feels no one is above suspicion. Starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Simon Merrells, Gemma Whelan, Mario Marin-Borquez, Asa Butterfield, Cristina Contes, and Hugo Weaving. Directed by Joe Johnston. Written by Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self. Universal Pictures release. Rated R for bloody horror violence and gore. Runtime: 125 minutes.

BEER! Craft Beer Gobbling Up Shelf Space in Stores Most of us know the company A. C. Nielsen as the folks that survey families about their television watching habits and then provide ratings that determine whether our favorite programs stay on the air. But the Nielsen Company has a different division, one that tracks consumer-packaged goods… and of course that includes beer. What’s important about that is that numbers coming from Nielsen, along with those from another company called Information Resources, Inc (IRI), are partially responsible for the upswing in craft beer availability in more mainstream settings, such as grocery and convenience stores. Without getting too technical,

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

both of these companies monitor what products are scanned at the cash registers and compile that data by product segment, geographic location and a variety of other factors. That information is then fed back to the people at these large chains that make the decisions on what products to carry. And the verdict is in, craft beer is what the consumers are buying, but since you’re reading this, you probably already knew that. If you stop by the Albertson’s at Carefree Highway and Scottsdale Road, or the Safeway stores at Alma School and Chandler Heights, or the one on Frank Lloyd Wright near Thompson Peak, you will find a section of the beer cooler dedicated to craft beer. Featuring anywhere from 5060 different brands including six-packs, 22 ounce bombers, variety packs, seasonals and even cans, these sets as they are called are exciting and new and represent a departure from the traditional way of thinking in grocery stores. Many Basha’s have craft beer racks as well, and even QuikTrip has gotten into the act. While you are getting

your 54 ounce soda for the ride home, you can pick up bombers of Lost Coast Great White, Wyders Pear Cider or Bear Republic Racer 5 to enjoy after you get home. And this is just the start…both Albertson’s and Safeway are looking at this as a market test. If these products sell well in these stores, look for them to expand to more of their locations. It really doesn’t get more exciting than that. So, what has made these stores decide that it’s now time to give valuable shelf space to these lesser known beers? That’s where Nielsen and IRI come in to play. Data shows that beer is the number three selling beverage category nationally in grocery stores. More than wine, more than bottled water, spirits or even juice; in fact the only categories that beat it are milk and soda. In Arizona, it’s even more compelling. Beer is the number one beverage category…no small wonder, it can get pretty hot here, and beer is refreshing. That explains why so much space in a grocer store is given to beer, but why is craft beer gaining territory? Let’s dig deeper in to the numbers, shall we? Craft is quite simply, the growth engine for the beer category. Over the past four years, beer has grown at an average of 14.3 percent each year in grocery stores, while the overall beer growth has averaged only 3.75 percent in the same time period. No

question that the beer category owes its growth to the craft beer that has been showing up in the super markets. There is also data that shows that the craft beer buyer is also spending more money overall on their grocery order. Somebody willing to spend a few dollars more to enjoy a higher quality beer, is also likely to buy better cuts of meat, spend more on fresh produce and even get the more expensive ice cream. Not only does the grocery store get better sales figures from the beer, but they get more money for everything else that goes in the basket as well. Clearly there is an incentive to cater to the craft beer buyer. One more thing, we mentioned that the Nielsen and IRI data are partially responsible for the increase in craft beer in these larger chain locations. So what is the other part? Very simple… it’s you, the craft beer enthusiast who buys those beers, who talks about those beers, and most importantly (to me anyway) reads about those beers right here in AZ Weekly. So, next time you are shopping for groceries, or stopping by the QuikTrip for a soda, check out what craft beers they are offering. Let the liquor department manager and the store manager know that you appreciate them supporting craft beer. Most of all help out craft beer in Arizona by supporting those folks that support craft beer.

This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.” -Cliff Clavin, of Cheers

The Rokerij- Romance without the pre-fix menu blues. There are plenty of fantastic restaurants in Phoenix, but sometimes you want a restaurant to do more than provide good food, you want a mini vacation. Luckily for you I have a solution. Kazimierz comes crashing down on silence with live music! That’s right, this place not only has delicious food, but this V-day, get in the mood for some rocky-blues and specialty cocktails kicking their Anti-Vday into gear. If you haven’t been, it’s time to make a reservation. Kazimier has a “speakeasy” feel highlighted by its hidden entrance. Couches, low lights and hightop tables all encircle the stage. This is a romantic, fun and high-energy place, we’re not talking Smooth Jazz here. So instead of nervous chatter, relax, enjoy the show and save your conversation starters for another time. 480.946.3004.

Party People….

If you haven’t heard, Cupid’s Revenge 7 will be in Phoenix on Saturday the 13th. Valentine’s Day is approaching. Are you wracking your brain for an original idea to surprise your special someone? How about a sunset trail ride on horseback along a Sonoran Desert trail? The Ride & Rose Special from Cave Creek Trail Rides, available Feb. 1-14, includes a one-hour or 1.5-hour guided trail ride for two through designated trails amid the peaceful and pristine Cave Creek Regional Park. After the ride, every lady will receive a rose. “It’s very romantic,” said Deb Bitton, co-owner. Jeff and Deb Bitton opened Cave Creek Trail Rides in 1999, creating a true Western experience just on the northern fringes of the Greater Phoenix area. Families, friends and neighbors, as well as corporate, school, church and civic groups can all have fun while learning about horses and spending quality time together. Cowboy and cowgirl regalia is available for those who want to dress the part. Toy guns along with lassos add to the photo opportunities. “We’re in the memory-making business,” said Bitton. “It’s so great to see people having fun, getting on a horse, and enjoying the whole cowboy and cowgirl experience.” You don’t have to be an experienced rider to enjoy the event. Rides are open to all ages, six and up. “We have in our 40-years of experience, what guests may lack in theirs,” said Bitton. “Our number-one priority is our guests’ safety,” said Bitton. Cave Creek Trail Rides, located at 37019 N. 32nd St. Cave Creek, 85331, is open every day from Columbus Day weekend through the first weekend of May. The one-hour ride is $84 per couple; the 1.5-hour ride is $104 per couple. Each represents a $10 savings per couple from the regular rates. Reservations are recommended. 623-7426700. New Orleans Saints Champions of Super Bowl XLIV Many football fans, leading with their head, viewed the Indianapolis Colts as the better team coming into Super Bowl XLIV. But when all the multicolored confetti had rained down on Sun Life Stadium, after the New Orleans Saints took down the favored Colts 31-17, the game turned out to be about heart. After the Saints won their first National Football League championship -- 43 years after they played their first game -- they talked about the once-ravaged city they represent. “We play for so much more than ourselves,” said Saints quarterback Drew Brees with his brown hair matted to his forehead. “We played for our city. We played for the entire Gulf Coast region. We

played for the entire Who Dat nation that has been behind us every step of the way.” Brees referenced trying to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina -- and a football franchise, too. Burn those bags. Put the S back in front of those Ain’ts. These Saints, finally, are Superb. “It means everything,” Brees said. “We’re here because of their strength and everything they fought through here the last few years. They’ve given us so much support, so we owe it all to our fans.” Some 700 miles away from Sun Life Stadium, it was All Saints Night on Bourbon Street as the French Quarter rocked with something approaching Mardi Gras intensity. “Just to think of the road we’ve all traveled, the adversity we’ve all

faced,” Brees said. “It’s unbelievable. I mean, are you kidding me? Four years ago, whoever thought this would be happening? Eighty-five percent of the city was under water. Most people left not knowing if New Orleans would ever come back, or if the organization would ever come back. “We just all looked at one another and said, ‘We’re going to rebuild together. We are going to lean on each other.’ That’s what we’ve done the last four years and this is the culmination in all that belief.”

EDU Research Group to Host Huge Educational Conference in February Students Get One-StopShop For Schools Arizona’s ongoing budget battle has left many casualties, ranging from reduced or eliminated programs and services, to thousands of lost jobs throughout the state. One of the largest entities caught in the crossfire is education. Already reeling from hundreds of millions of dollars in budget cuts, schools face the daunting task of improving Arizona’s rank among the nation’s bottom ten in many educational categories without access to crucial resources and technology. With the state facing combined

budget shortfalls of over $4.0 billion in the next two fiscal years, schools are bracing for even more cuts in the future. With seemingly nothing but bad news facing the industry, Scottsdale-based EDU Research Group (www.edurg.com) hopes to provide a needed spark to education in Arizona by bringing some of the industry’s greatest minds, organizations and technology under one roof to discuss and suggest improvements in the field, while simultaneously giving students free, face-to-face access to higher education institutions and information from around the world. Featuring a keynote address by former Vice President and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore, EduRG Conference 2010 will take place at the Phoenix Convention Center, February 27-28. With speakers and workshops covering all aspects of education, and

hundreds of exhibitors displaying the latest in education-based products and technology, the Conference is guaranteed to have something for anyone seeking to further their education, improve their teaching methods, or showcase their school or business. “As an Arizona-based company, we are very proud to bring this Conference to our home state and hopefully provide a jumpstart to students, teachers and administrators, as well as shine a spotlight on the trends and explosive growth within the Education space,” said EDU Research Group CEO, Hart Cunningham. “With the collection of speakers, exhibitors, workshops and sponsors we are bringing together, we believe this Conference can have a very positive effect on education, both in Arizona and around the country.”

to meet representatives from participating colleges, universities and education-themed businesses. Every student can expect to receive information on career advancement, educational programs and a complimentary lunch. Transportation to and from the conference will be available from points across the Valley. Visit the Conference’s Facebook page for more details. Academic institutions will have the opportunity to recruit prospective students at EduRG Conference 2010, while meeting the top Education product and service providers in the United States and beyond. Educationbased businesses are offered brand exposure, partnership opportunities and access to high-level Education executives from around the globe. For more information, or to register, visit www.edurg.com/events.

Students can attend the Conference, free of charge,
