On March 19 Tempe Little Theatre, the community’s only non-profit, all volunteer, theatre company will open the classic musical SWEET CHARITY at the Tempe Center for the Arts. With a book written by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, SWEET CHARITY will be directed for Tempe Little Theatre by Jeffrey Middleton. SWEET CHARITY follows the adventures of Charity Hope Valentine, a taxi dancer at the Fandango Ballroom in New York City. Charity is a girl who wants to find love so badly that she loses sight of who she truly is. She makes her way through several changes and chances at romance, but does she find love? This is a fascinating musical comedy with several big show-stopper numbers like “Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” and “I’m a Brass Band.” Performance dates for SWEET CHARITY are March 19, 20, 26, 27, April 2, 3, at 8 p.m. March 21, 27, 28, April 3 and 4 at 2 p.m. and April 1 at 7 p.m. All performances will be held at the Tempe Center for the Arts at 700 W Rio Salado Parkway at Tempe Town Lake. When three Billy goats move in to the Land of Nursery Rhymes, they find out they really don’t fit in with the Rhymes, even though their as sweet as the bakers pies. This past Friday, I witnessed an impressive feat, as a near capacity crowd at The Mesa Arts Center, screaming for an acoustic performance by Los Lonely Boys, raised the roof on this incredible, nearly eight story structure. The Tom & Janet Ikeda Theater hosted the concert, largest of the four theaters that comprise this modern, state-of-the-art-equipped Mesa Arts Center. Not only visually impressive, this theater is astonishingly cozy and comfortable too. Its attention to detail is apparent everywhere from the sound system to the lighting system and décor. Los Lonely Boys, consisting of 3 brothers out of San Angelo, Texas, were musical perfection incarnate for sixty mind-blowing minutes on Friday evening. While the brothers Garza, Henry, Jojo and Ringo have enjoyed commercial success, they really excelled in an acoustic performance of an extremely diverse range of tunes. Opening with original well-known songs, including Senorita, they progressed to a masterful rendition of Santana’s, Evil Ways. Every song included insane improvisational jams, one of the best things this band is known for. Culminating with an amazing cover of I’m A Man and their ovation performance of Heaven had the crowd on their feet. Altogether, this performance was one to rival other exceptional performances such as Jane’s Addiction and Pearl Jam, both, coincidentally, occurring at The Mesa Amphitheater. Let’s face it folks, Mesa Rocks! -Jeff Miller KUDOS…For Ib Anderson’s BALLET ARIZONA production of Sleeping Beauty. This beautiful tale of kings, princes, fairies, witches and weddings was superbly produced and performed in stunning fashion! Not to forget, Maestro Timothy Russell and the entire PHOENIX SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA for a supreme musical performance as well. And, the Scottsdale Center for the Arts and their DESTINATION CHINA series featuring the passionate and inspiring performance of pianist DI WU, and the dynamic mandala and dance of SHEN WEI Dance Arts. Great programming selections with outstanding theatre. Break a Leg!

16th Annual Sedona Film Festival Kicks Off This Week By Randy Montgomery Waiting for a week-long film festival to begin is as exciting for a film junkie as is waiting in line in the freezing cold at 4am the morning after Thanksgiving to get a deal for a bargain shopper. (Yeah, it’s like that.) The casual shopper that won’t get up at the crack of dawn to go Black Friday shopping typically won’t find the $99 flat screen television late in the day, yet a casual filmgoer can wander into a festival at their leisure and find an undiscovered, entertaining, thought-provoking selection at any time. Whether you go for the entire festival, a day, or just a movie or two, you will not be disappointed.

The Sedona Film Festival, now in its 16th year has quickly become not only Arizona’s top festival destination, but one of the country’s as well as evidenced by the level of talent that attends and the size of the audience that pack the Harkins Sedona 6 Theatres for the week-long event. Interest in the festival has grown so much, that additional venues have been added this year to handle the crowds and the number of films

Sedona International Film Festival chosen. A temporary venue has been set up across the street from the theatre at the Sedona Rouge Hotel and up the street at “Studio Live.” In all, 145 short and feature films from 18 countries will be shown. Venues aren’t the only addition this year. Two new series of programming have been added says Executive Director Patrick Schweiss, “We’ve introduced a track to the festival called ‘Sedona Green;’ environmentally and socially conscious films that feature sustainability and the artists’ role in getting messages out through film making.” In addition, the Sedona Community Foundation helped fund a series which features selections that are “safe and appropriate for families.” Not only will attendees get numerous celebrity sightings, they’ll get a change to see and hear them live before and after the films they are there to present. Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara (Ben Stiller parents) each have a film in the festival. When the World Breaks stars Stiller, while Another Harvest Moon features Meara, Doris Roberts and Richard Schiff, all of whom are scheduled to attend. Many times, viewers will get to ask their favorite actor/actress questions about their role and what it was like to star in, or make the film they have just seen.

film line-up is the star of the show, and Schweiss says “I can honestly say that these are the strongest 145 we’ve ever had in the festival. It was the hardest festival to schedule. We have Oscar nominated films showing at 9 am and at 9 at night. We’ve got a very exciting situation on our hands. We don’t have a bad film in the line up.” In terms of Academy Award submissions from around the globe, “We’ve got the Philippines foreign language entry. We have the country of Georgia’s entry. The Other Bank. Columbia’s entry, The Winds Journey. Norway’s which is Troubled Water. We were fortunate enough to get the crème de la crème of foreign language films. We also struck gold with our animated films this year as well as our short films. Kavi is up for best live action short at the Academy Awards. Additional feature films include The Greatest starring Susan Sarandon and Pierce Brosnan, Saving Grace B. Jones starring Connie Stevens and PollliWood directed by Barry Levinson. An 8-minute short film that should make you giggle is The Kinda Sutra. “It tackles the age old question of where babies come from. Animation is placed in from the Kama Sutra. Our Operations Director discovered it at the Telluride Film Festival,” explains Schweiss.

A Shine Of Rainbows

Which films moved Schweiss the most? From the UK is the short Ronan’s Escape, “It’s a short which is one of the most haunting and most powerful message of any film in our line up and it has no dialog, It’s a gorgeous film.” As for feature films… “A Shine of Rainbows starring Aiden Quinn. We’re making it required viewing,” he laughs… “If you come to the festival. Director Michael Moore will be on hand to present three of his films; Sicko, Capitalism: A Love Story and the 20th Anniversary of Roger & Me. “Moore will be hosting and speaking at each,” says Schweiss. “An afternoon conversation session has been scheduled with the Director for Saturday afternoon as well.”

to readers to be as fair and honest as I can, and see the movies as they appear on the screening list. At film festivals I have to opportunity to view films from my favorite genres. One of those genres is psychological thrillers. The films that scare one, not by what is seen, but what one feels or relates to consciously or unconsciously.

“St. John of Las Vegas” John Alegheri (Steve Buscemi), is a reformed compulsive gambler and works for an insurance agency. After asking his boss for a raise, he’s promoted to the fraud division. John is faced with the ultimate challenge as he, along with his partner (Romany Malco), are sent on a fraud investigation, which proves to be a metaphoric descent into hell, and in particular, his own personal version of hell since the investigation takes place in and around Las Vegas, the city that almost took everything away from him once before.

I’m always intrigued by films made by working technicians in the motion picture industry who branch out from time to time to make the movie of their choice, outside of their normal working discipline. Having worked in the industry for 22 years before retiring to write about movies, the films I’ve written and produced are “The Twilight Zone” – “Outer Limits” themed stories,

I thoroughly enjoyed “Solitary”! I love tag lines for movies, and the tagline for “Solitary”, sent a chill up my ‘psychological spine’: “Some mysteries must be solved alone”… “Solitary” centers on a woman suffering from agoraphobia, the extreme or irrational fear of crowded spaces or enclosed public places. Her husband has disappeared, and she’s faced with the ultimate challenge of trying to solve the mystery while battling her fear of leaving her home. Of course, the ‘usual suspects’ come into play. Has her husband really vanished? She’s seeing a therapist to cope with her fear, is it a conspiracy of sorts?

Yes, I follow on the average, a good many international film festivals a year and one begins to identify those films that are ‘on a role’ as they move from festival to festival. For the festivals that are in my home venue, it’s my chance to explore. As a reviewer in the regular course of seeing movies, I don’t have the luxury of choice. My readership is broad based covering the full genre of movies made. I feel a commitment

BEER! By Chuck Noll The internet is a great tool for many applications. Just about any information you could possibly want can be found right there. Of course, this being a beer column, we are going to look at what is out there for our personal beverage of choice. First off, how do you use the internet to determine what beer to drink? There are countless beer web sites out there that review beers and talk about what’s available. The two most popular are RateBeer (www.ratebeer. com) and Beer Advocate (www.beeradvocate.com). Both sites have a variety of features with the focus being on beer ratings and public forums. The ratings are consumer driven so while wine uses folks with theoretically

perfect palates to rate their products, these ratings feature everyday drinkers giving you an idea of what they think of the beer. Beer is rated on several categories: Aroma, Appearance, Flavor and Palate for RateBeer and Look, Smell, Taste, Feel and Drink for Beer Advocate. A composite score for each rating is compiled and then it is converted to either a percentile (RateBeer) or a letter score (Beer Advocate). The formulas used are designed to protect against abuse, but they also produce other interesting results. RateBeer tends to have more extremes, that is, more beers are rated with extremely high scores and more have extremely low scores. Beer Advocate’s system yields more balance between the scoring and A+ scores are extremely rare, while D scores are also rare. Both web sites also allow you to compare the beers against other beers of the same style. Given that many of the raters have a preference for strong beers, there is a disproportionate amount of Imperial Stouts, Belgian

Quadrupels and other high alcohol beers represented at the top of the list. Are any of these great beers available in Arizona? Of course they are. Sixteen of RateBeer’s top Fifty beers have been sold in Arizona in the past twelve months including Alesmith Speedway Stout, Bell’s Expedition Stout, St. Bernardus ABT 12 and Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast. Beer Advocate has their list of the “Top Beers on Planet Earth” and 34 of their top 100 were sold in Arizona last year. This includes Alesmith IPA, Lost Abbey Angel’s Share, Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye, Ballast Point Victory at Sea and Bel’s Two Hearted Ale all make this list. As you explore on these sites you can break it down by country and style as well. The other big part of these sites are the forums. Forums serve as an exchange of information between the users of the site and they are broken down by category. There are regional forums, Beer Talk, New Releases, Trading and Industry News forums and all are fairly active. Recent topics in the regional forum for Arizona include groups planning private tasting events, availability of Bell’s Hopslam and the Strong Beer Festival held last weekend. Discussions

about big events are regular and following them is a great way to determine which events are worthwhile to attend and which aren’t; post mortems follow every event and allows people to share their experiences. Sometimes it’s interesting to follow another region just to see what is going on in other parts of the country, or even the world. Of course not everybody wants to participate in these forums and that’s okay, there is other information on the web sites as well. Both sites include regular articles, a calendar of Over 100 Beers for you to try. Go Ahead. We’ll wait.

There are many other sites out there that are beer related. Two of our favorites are The Beer Mapping Project (www. beermapping.com) and Brookston Beer Bulletin (www.brookstonbeerbulletin. com). Beer Mapping provides maps of cities and countries and marks locations of breweries, beer bars, restaurants, beer stores and homebrew shops. If you travel this is a great way to locate the best beer near your hotel. Jay Brooks is a former buyer for BevMo who maintains one of the best blogs out there. Now there are many great beer bloggers but Brookston Beer Bulletin is at the top. There is a small San Francisco bias since that’s where its based, but Jay has a great amount of information and opinion on world wide issues and is always a good read. Additionally he maintains a great reference of brewery web site, other blogs,

events, beer trivia and more. Brewery and distributor web sites also provide a lot of good information, albeit only for specific brands. However if you are really looking for in depth information, these are some of the best resources. Some of the best looking and most informative brewery web sites include The Lost Abbey (www.lostabbey. com), Breckenridge (www. breckbrew.com), Oskar Blues (www.oskarblues. com) and Great Divide (www.greatdivide. com). Locally, World Class Beverages (www. worldclassbeverages.com) has a very educational and interesting web site. Besides offering detailed information about all the beers and general beer knowledge, the web site feature BeerSpy. BeerSpy allows a consumer to search for a beer and find the bars or stores closest to a given location that offer that product. When you decide you just have to have your Great White, this is the way to find it. There are so many more opportunities to use the internet for information. Social networking sites such as Twitter and FaceBook are becoming increasingly popular and deserve some mention. In fact they deserve their own separate article and that will appear at a later date. For now, dig in to the suggestions here and increase your beer knowledge.

For example, a quick search of the Arizona market shows us that T’s Liquor and Convenience Mart (Tempe), Magnum’s (Phoenix), Papago (Scottsdale) AJ’s Fine Foods – Via Linda (Scottsdale) and 1702 (Tucson) all score highly. Since the web sites depend on consumers or retailers to conduct the initial set up, there are still many great places not represented. Soon, we expect to see Orange Table (Scottsdale), Mellow Mushroom (Pheonix), Bison Witches (Tempe) and Chop and Wok (Scottsdale) show up in these listings.

A love child of dub music with reggae based beats and the electronic influence of drum/base and 2-step garage, escaping from the UK only a few years back. Last months headliner was 16bit straight from the UK and yours truly was there at Cherry Lounge and Pittwait I know what you’re thinking- do I have to be a Lil’ Wayne fan to get in? - No, Thursday’s are a whole new vibe. Known for its “dark beats,” dubstep speaks to that deeper self inside each of us, the one that wants to escape to Las Vegas. It’s that feeling which keeps the fan base growing. “This isn’t just any other club night,” explains Mary Mahan. “You have to witness what these artists do on stage, it’s a concert.” And she’s right; what I got was a meditative, high-energy underground feeling about it. I laugh, I sing, I do a body-shot. What more is there? Each song is tweaked to make you crack up, it’s a show with a lot of crowd participation. On my last visit I heard the familiar lyrics of “don’t stop believing.” where HAVEN’T I heard this song. Apparently the guy next to me was thinking the same thing as he pulled out a $20 to make it stop. The neighboring table almost went into trauma as they scrambled for cash. “$80 to play it!” YEY! This place is big, spacey and gets crowded. And then there’s the wonderful moment when the waitresses do a dance routine on the bar and the guys steal their thunder and take their shirts off on “Macho Man.” It’s a fun place. DIN THOMAS READY TO WELCOME BOXING GREAT TO THE WORLD OF MMA Former UFC lightweight contender Din Thomas has been on a roll. Since bidding farewell to the UFC and the 155-pound class in early 2008, the American Top Team product has gone 3-0 as a featherweight, most recently earning a second-round TKO over Dustin Pague on Jan. 8 of this year. After a near year of inactivity, not a whole lot of offers were made when Thomas was ready to step back into the cage to compete. One promotion rose over the rest and when they made the offer, Thomas couldn’t refuse. Recent speculation has risen that Thomas will now be making his Shine Fights debut opposite former world champion boxer Ricardo Mayorga at an as of yet announced event this Spring. Though nothing has been set in stone, Thomas is trying to remain as optimistic as possible about the proposed match-up in what would be the first time a boxer of Mayorga’s caliber has attempted to assimilate into the world of mixed martial arts. “I’ve already signed with (Shine Fights). I’m assuming he has, and I’m already studying his films, studying what he does, and I’m already training for him. I’m just telling everybody it’s going to happen so hopefully he doesn’t back out and definitely steps up.”

While Thomas isn’t hesitant to stand in front of the former middleweight and welterweight boxing champion, he would favor a more tactical approach, picking Mayorga apart by whatever means necessary. “I wouldn’t stand and bang with Steve Urkel, that’s just not my style,” said Din. “I pick people apart. To say that I won’t stand with him is crazy because I will stand with him, but to stand and bang with him is even crazier than that, because I don’t stand and bang with anybody. I’m going to stand and pick him apart.” “I’m definitely going to be kicking and kneeing and elbowing him. I mean, welcome to MMA, I’m sorry. If he wanted to box we would have put on eight ounce gloves and boxed, but this is MMA so everybody wants me stand with him, at least give me the option to kick him and I’m going to.”

Seriously, we’ve all been in other bands in town. After awhile, everyone sounded the same. Everyone tried to copy whatever was popular at the time- pretty soon, you couldn’t tell one band from another. We wanted to break from the pack and do something different. Both Chris and I are influenced by the blues and some of the great guitarists of the 30’s and 40’s. R.L. Burnside is a great example. Even some of the bands of the 70’s like Humble Pie have that raw, bluesy edge that make music relevant. We wanted to bring that edge back, even if it meant we weren’t popular. What’s the story behind the name? Chris: Mongo and I are whiskey fanatics, so that was set in stone. Up until this past summer, there were only three of us. After doing a quick testicle count and assuming all of us were men, the ‘six’ was tacked on to the name. With the addition of Matt Indes, we realized we have a problem- we’ve spent a lot of money on the logo design and can’t change it now. Someone is going to have to get neutered. Are you any good? Matt: When we’re drinking, we think we sound GREAT! When the audience is drinking, we sound even better! Name some of your best cover tunes? Raf: We love to play anything that has ‘feel’ to it. ZZ Top songs always come up in rehearsals. Mongo loves Midnight Rider by the Allman Brothers Band and Lord knows we have to keep Mongo happy. What do you think is most important when doing a cover tune, exact reproduction, or creative interpretation of a familiar tune? Chris: Creative Interpretation! We take a song, pour a little whiskey on it, add whatever stripper Raf brought with him to practice, and blamo! Whiskey Six original cover. Mongo: I think it depends on the song. Some songs you can’t cover at all, like any Led Zeppelin tune. People expect too much out of you at that point. Plus, it’s hard to make something different that is already so different. But, for those songs you can cover, you should play your unique creative interpretation of itotherwise; people can just listen to the CD.

Band Members:

Who gets the most Groupies and why? If nobody gets any, do you have a plan to change this? Mongo: Chris’ mustache gets the most groupies. Not Chris, just the ‘stache. Matt: I disagree. Raf usually gets the most groupies. As soon as we find out what his secret is, the rest of us will be relishing in the rewards of rock glory. Well, as much glory as we can find in Phoenix. Tell us a secret about the band (just between us and 125,000 readers): Whiskey Six would love to be in one of the creepy Cheeto’s commercials. Or Chris has a third nipple. An underwater volcanic eruption spews boiling water into the cruise ship you’re playing on, and wouldn’t you know it, right in the middle of your set! Being upright, noble folk, what music would you play to calm everyone down as they boil to death? Chris: Are you kidding?! We’re hitting the bar! Don’t get us wrong, we love playing music for everyone, but we have chicks to bang, alcohol to drink, and sins to commit before we bite the big one! What is the official drink of the band? Mongo: Anything that is free or has booze in it. Yes, this includes ‘girly drinks’. Screw you, I can make that look manly! How often do you perform live? Matt: We like to disrupt the public at least once a month. Sometimes we’ll feel feisty and play two shows a month. Actually, our fans tell us we sound better live, probably because we really love the music we play. We’re excited to be opening for Powerman 5000 in June and hope to play a few festivals as well this summer. We’re also looking to play more in other areas like L.A. or Vegas. Phoenix will always be our hometown, but it’d be nice to expand to other areas of the country and really show what we’ve got. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? Mongo: Some lady was yelling at Raf just to get him off stage. He brings those cougars out in droves. I guess they want to relive what they missed in the 80’s. Raf doesn’t have the heart to tell them that, after 30 years, their spandex doesn’t look as hot as it used to. Kind of creepy really.

Who is the craziest band member and why? Chris: Definitely Raf. We’ve been on photo shoots and Raf is always scaling buildings and going places I’m pretty sure is illegal in most states. One time we were taking pictures in front of this abandoned elevator factory in a really old part of Phoenix. They had those wrought iron elevator cars from the 20’s on the roof, so Raf decided to scale up the building and crawled in them! All of the sudden, he gets this weird look on his face. We all look to the south and see hordes of homeless people walking towards us. Apparently, we were on their turfthey told us it was the ‘street of the homeless’. We consider ourselves pretty tough, but when you’ve got 100 homeless people coming after you like some twisted zombie movie, you get the hell out of there! What do you do different that kicks ass over other cover bands? Raf: We play mostly original music, but sometimes we’ll throw in a cover tune to break up the set or if we decide it fits. When we played the Blooze Bar last month, we asked the lead singer of ‘357’ to come onstage and sing ‘Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers’ with us just for the hell of it. Chris: We hope people appreciate the talent and originality of the band. Despite what it might look like, we take this pretty seriously and work hard to put something together that we think people will appreciate. Our fans are very important to us, which is why we give away the 3-song EP whenever we play. Sure, we could charge for it, but in this economy, it’s tough enough for people to pay cover charge and order a few drinks at a bar. We want everyone to know how much we appreciate their support. We plan on giving away free tickets, T-shirts and anything we can when we play out. What advice would you give a startup cover band? Freebird should not be part of the setlist. Ever. What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? Mongo: Nothing, pretty much everything they say is true. Chris: This is a business to most musicians. We run our music, our merchandise, and performing just like any other business selling a product…hell, who are we kidding…we’re in it for the chicks and beer!

What do you think will happen to your band in the next 2 years? Chris will be a judge on American Idol. Raf will be the proud owner of a brothel in Nevada. Mongo will be loose flipping cars in mall parking lots. Matt will be an organic sheep farmer. What will people see when you perform live? Mongo: It’s not so much what they see, but what they hear. We really try to create a vibe that goes beyond just watching some schmoe band in a bar. Remember the old Midnight Special TV show? They had these amazing artists on there- just playing their music and having a great time. There were no dancers in the background, no special effects, no voice effects- nothing to take away from the actual music. We want to bring that concept back. We want the audience to really get involved with the music and take that journey with us. Your favorite clubs to play in Phoenix? Chris: Any place that has booze. We really like them all. What’s the hardest part about doing cover music? Mongo: Keeping that original spark that made it so great in the beginning. Last Question… Please take a few sentences and promote your band in any way that the questions did not cover. Lie, brag, make claims you can’t possibly support, give shameless plugs, tell us the preferred groupies we should order for you…You know, the usual. Rock on! Chris: We’re really excited about the show coming up at Martini Ranch on February 26th. It’s our first time playing there and, hopefully, not our last. Martini is a great place for any band to play and always brings a really fun crowd. On March 20th, we’ll be at the Blooze Bar, another place that has a great vibe to it. In June, we’re opening for Powerman 5000. As soon as tickets are available, we’ll be giving away free tickets through our email list on our website, Twitter, and 98 KUPD.
