Take two funny writers, one a talented lyricist and composer- add a dose of Broadway dreams mixed with friendship and acting, and you have the hit comedy musical, [title of show] from Arizona Theatre Company. This show proves, really big dreams can come true in the “Great White Way” of New York theatre. Director David Ira Goldstein has put his passion into a project he was exhilarated with and it shows! There’s not a dull moment in this insiders tale of the Broadway scene including belly laughing songs about Vampires, Monkeys, Playbills, Tony Awards and much more. The writing is drop dead hilarious and there’s “No Doots” this is as “Mexcellent” as it gets in Arizona. When the Troll kidnaps Bo Peep, Old King Cole decrees that all non-Rhymes are to be banished. The Gruffs then go under the bridge to save Bo Peep, but find a very different story. Together with Peep, Blue and the Troll, the Gruffs help the Rhymes understand that it is okay to be different. You won’t want to miss this witty and very entertaining world premiere.

FILM! “The Ghost Writer”, Director Roman Polanski still has the ominous touch of telling stories! Review by Stan Robinson As a graduate of film school and twenty plus years of movie making, say to me the name Roman Polanski,
accident before the memoirs can be completed. As ‘The Ghost’ preps by reading the uncompleted manuscript and starts the research to fill in some of the apparent ‘holes’ in the chronology, he realizes that there are secrets and details, some of which governmental while others are of a ‘clandestine’ nature, start to surface. To further complicate an already tense situation for Lang and all those in his immediate employ, including The Ghost, is the public announcement of a former British cabinet member accuses Lang, while he was prime minister, of authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the

my response is: ‘He psychologically stir’s emotions by what you don’t see on screen, while creating foreboding situations on screen one would certainly avoid if possible’. My all time Polanski favorite that demonstrates his unique style is 1974’s “Chinatown”, starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston, which has an Oscar® along with multiple nominations. His style is firmly present, and I can still hear the haunting theme by Jerry Goldsmith and the familiar line, ‘Forget it Jake, its Chinatown’, to sum up the bazaar and disturbing events the lead character uncovered. Once again, with “The Ghost Writer”, Roman Polanski delivers a story that purport’s an ideal situation that escalates into a nightmare…

Whether camping, boating, playing golf, hanging around at the pool, canned beers are just flat out better. Some places, lakes and public swimming pools come to mind, don’t even allow bottles, so cans are the only choice. In those situations, why not bring the best possible beer? Even when there is an option to bring bottles, cans are still preferred. Cans are lighter than bottles so when out camping, packing in and packing out the empties is simple. Why would you want to have to carry out heavy, empty

Aluminum is infinitely recyclable and a can only takes eight weeks to make the trip from recycling center back to the canning line. Canning lines were too big and too expensive; and minimum can orders were prohibitive. That is the main reason why bottles were the initial choice of craft brewers. To further put that perception to rest, look no further than the New York Times. Several years ago they conducted a blind taste test of 25 top selling pale ales. Dale’s Pale Ale won the competition and was named as the Best Pale Ale in America. It was also the only entrant in a can.

This week the Phoenix Open has finally arrived. Since we are all just really waiting to go to Bird’s Nest, I figured I would focus on who all exactly is making an appearance. After all alcohol is only half the party, you have to have the music. Wednesday, Feb. 24 Duck Soup, as stated in their own bio is best described as 3 cups of 60’s rock-nroll hits, 1 cup 50’s Classic Rock, 2 Tbsp. 70’s Groove and a dash of 60’s Funk. Sounds like a damn good soup…and yes I too would like to know where the duck comes in. DJ Roonie G is kind of a big deal in the DJ world. Here’s why: 2 Club World Awards, hot-spot residencies in Las Vegas, LA and Atlantic City and a fusion of not just music but video graphics of comedy, film and music all in tandem with the beat. He will be performing Wed-Sat. Reverend Run of RUN-D.M.C. headlines Wednesday night and does not exactly need an intro. I feel we all heard the remix of “Walk this Way” and “It’s Tricky.” And yes you have seen his reality show Run’s House on MTV-don’t lie. Steel Panther is a lot of rock and roll hair and spandex. In their first-time appearance at the Birds Nest, Steel Panther will be covering all the best 80’s metal bands such as Motley Crew, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses among others. Not into 80’s metal? Then go for the outfits and the promise of a crazy show. Thursday, Feb. 25 Champagne Tap is what happens when a group of doctors rock out in their house for too long - they get good enough to be a sweet cover band. Think Alice in Chains, Aerosmith, and ZZ Top. Collective Soul is one of the top 90’s bands and is headlining Thursday night - which is very exciting. “Whoa heaven let your light shine down” so glad I got to write that and not actually butcher it with my voice.
Friday, Feb. 26 The Chadwicks are Arizona’s very own cover band. Not only are classic rock songs nailed to a point, but the band keeps themselves current on the latest alternative tracks to hit the wavelength. Get ready to hear Greenday, Matchbox 20, and Weezer. Static is the Phoenix Suns’ official house band. Static provides high-energy covers and mixes of pop, R&B and top 40 hits from Beyonce, Lady Ga Ga, Black Eyed Peas and Michael Jackson. Saturday, Feb. 27 Kelley James is the new man to keep an eye out for on the West Coast. Think acoustic guitar with upbeat rhythms. John Mayer better step his game up. O.A.R is that one band you hear on the radio all the time. Does this chorus sound familiar, “How many times can I break till I’m shattered”… “I always turn the car around.” Yah they’ve been pretty big since the late 90’s and here’s your chance to see why! GAME! ARENA FOOTBALL LEAGUE RE-LAUNCHES AFL Back and Better Than Ever After a one-year hiatus, the Arena Football League (AFL) is poised for a triumphant return. The league announced plans for the upcoming season, advanced progress toward expanding into the Philadelphia, Southern California, Denver and Pittsburgh markets and details of its contract with the NFL Network to broadcast AFL games in 2010. The regular season will kick off with a full slate of games the weekend of April 2-4. The 15-team league will play a 16-game schedule leading into the playoffs and the Arena Bowl the third weekend in August. “We’re back and we’re not going anywhere,” Commissioner Jerry Kurz said. “We are tremendously excited to bring back Arena Football to our ardent following of fans across the country. With a restructured business plan, we are poised to come back stronger than ever.” In 2008, fans embraced the AFL at a record pace. Games were played before an average crowd of almost
13,000 and 2008 was a record year for revenue. “The financial trouble the former league ran into was not due to a lack of fan interest and support,” Kurz said. “The demise of the former AFL was more a function of a severe recession and rising league and team operational costs. Once we had the opportunity to work as a cohesive group of owners in developing the plan to retool the business model, it was an easy decision for the league to re-launch.” Demand for Arena Football is such that there is significant interest in expansion for the 2011 season and serious negotiations are under way with at least four teams. “The game is as popular as it has ever been,” said Tampa Bay Storm Coach Tim Marcum, the AFL’s all-time winningest coach. Owners include former head coach and NFL Legend Mike Ditka, a returning Chicago Rush co-owner. “This was too good of an opportunity for me to pass up,” Ditka said. “I have the utmost respect for the players. They are playing for the pure love of the game.”

Because there’s nothing more fun than rocking out with your friends. What’s the story behind the name? Well, girls and boys, once upon a time when Cherrybomb was a wee girl, she was afraid of The Green Lady, a ghoulish monster that lived in her closet. The Green Lady terrorized little Cherrybomb nightly with her evil glowing eyes, and Lady Van Buren, who grew up across the street from Cherrybomb, remembers the sinister powers of The Green Lady.

Buren moved to Seattle. One day, a roommate brought home the portrait of “Miss Wong,” a 1950’s painting by Vladimir Tretchikoff. Lady Van Buren and her roommates all agreed that the painting was so creepy that they didn’t even want to hang it up.
What is the official drink of the band? Lately it’s been Patron Silver – chilled with a lime is best.
Lady Van Buren’s friend from Phoenix came to visit in Seattle, saw “Miss Wong”, instantly fell in love with the painting and begged Lady Van Buren to send it to him. She happily sent away “Miss Wong” and the painting arrived on Halloween, just in time for her friend’s house party that night. During the Halloween party, he left to go buy more beer and while he was gone, his house caught fire, but “Miss Wong”, only a few feet from the flames, survived untouched.
How would you classify your music and influences? Straight up rock ‘n’ roll that makes you wanna shake your booty. Our music lends itself to driving fast cars and having a good time. Some of our influences include The Cramps, Eagles of Death Metal, Sonic Youth, The Runaways, The Pixies, Queens of the Stone Age, and Supersuckers. How often do you perform live? About 1-3 times per month.

A few years later Lady Van Buren and Cherrybomb started the band and were searching images on Google for show flyers. They typed in “green lady” and the image of “Miss Wong” appeared. Pretty strange, right? “Miss Wong” now graces the cover of The Green Lady Killer’s self titled EP and also hangs in Lady Van Buren’s house in a place of honor so she hopefully won’t start anymore fires!
What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? A fan ran up to the stage, stripped off his shirt and begged us to all sign his chest, which we did with pleasure.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? In our case, since we are an all female band, the biggest misconception people have about us before they watch us play or hear our record is that we play soft rock or folk songs… then we bust out with the 100 watt Marshall Super Lead and the 300 watt Fender Bassman Pro and blow them away.
