THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA The Phoenix Theatre in Downtown Phoenix. The Phoenix Theatre opened the romantic, beautiful and sensitive musical, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA this past weekend. Love is in the air with the music and lyrics of Adam Guettel accentuating this heart warming story, the love of a mother for her pure and innocent daughter, who finds love in the streets of Florence, Italy. There’s a chord of kindness and forgiveness too which makes the story even more transforming. Starring as the star crossed lovers are Kaitlynn Kleinman as Clara and Nick Cartell as Fabrizio. Their romance is real and their love blind to the way of the world. But the Light’s wisdom and heart is revealed through Jeannie Shubitz, who as Clara’s mother Margaret, shines with grace and beauty in “Dividing Day”, “The Beauty Is”, the duet “Lets Walk” with debonair Signor Nacarelli, played with passion by Doug Webster, and finally, ”Fable”, her hearts surrender. “The Light” is a ray of hope with golden performances worth diamonds. One of the world’s best-known and bestloved musicals, Cats has pounced into the hearts of audiences all over the world. It’s an all-singing, all-dancing spectacle based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber that has been translated into over 20 languages. With mega-hits like ‘Memory,’ Cats won seven Tony awards in 1983, including Best Musical, and went on to become one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. A new day has begun.

Even though the Rhymes are nice enough, the Gruffs don’t really fit in. They try to help their only friend, Little Boy Blue, proclaim his love for his neighbor across the bridge, Little Bo Peep. When the Troll kidnaps Bo Peep, Old King Cole decrees that all non-Rhymes are to be banished. The Gruffs then go under the bridge to save Bo Peep, but find a very different story. Together with Peep, Blue and the Troll, the Gruffs help the Rhymes understand that it is okay to be different. You won’t want to miss this witty and very entertaining world premiere.

This is an epic story of a tragic hero, cheated, degraded, and at last brutally beaten. Mr. Sackler uses his hero, a figure based on the first Black heavyweight champion of the world, Jack Johnson, as a symbol with enormous scope and range. The story picks up on the Johnson storyline soon after the Australian day in 1908 when Johnson whipped Tommy Burns and then takes his trade to Havana in 1915, when Jess Willard, the Great White Hope, attempts to even to score for White society.

FILM! “The Ghost Writer”, Director Roman Polanski still has the ominous touch of telling stories! Review by Stan Robinson As a graduate of film school and twenty plus years of movie making, say to me the name Roman Polanski,

accident before the memoirs can be completed. As ‘The Ghost’ preps by reading the uncompleted manuscript and starts the research to fill in some of the apparent ‘holes’ in the chronology, he realizes that there are secrets and details, some of which governmental while others are of a ‘clandestine’ nature, start to surface. To further complicate an already tense situation for Lang and all those in his immediate employ, including The Ghost, is the public announcement of a former British cabinet member accuses Lang, while he was prime minister, of authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the

my response is: ‘He psychologically stir’s emotions by what you don’t see on screen, while creating foreboding situations on screen one would certainly avoid if possible’. My all time Polanski favorite that demonstrates his unique style is 1974’s “Chinatown”, starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston, which has an Oscar® along with multiple nominations. His style is firmly present, and I can still hear the haunting theme by Jerry Goldsmith and the familiar line, ‘Forget it Jake, its Chinatown’, to sum up the bazaar and disturbing events the lead character uncovered. Once again, with “The Ghost Writer”, Roman Polanski delivers a story that purport’s an ideal situation that escalates into a nightmare…

CIA, which is, in fact, a war crime. “The Ghost Writer” presents a global view of those with power, secrets, and the will to exercise their control while the ordinary man just tries to stay alive, is a story that grab’s hold and doesn’t let go. From the opening scene of ‘The Ghost’s’ arrival in the middle of winter, to an oceanfront house on an island off the U.S. Eastern seaboard to start his assignment, to the final scene of a lonely city street at night with the manuscript pages falling like rain, its pure Roman Polanski in between… Starring Ewan McGregor, Jon Bernthal, Kim Cattrall, Pierce Brosnan, Tim Preece, James Belushi, Olivia Williams, Timothy Hutton, Anna Botting, Tom Wilkinson, Yvonne Tomlinson, and Eli Wallach. It’s a ‘heist’ movie in the tradition of the “Ocean” films as the story takes you into the world of a notorious group of criminals (Idris Elba, Paul Walker, T.I., Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Michael Ealy) who continue to baffle police by pulling off perfectly executed bank robberies. They are in and out like clockwork, leaving no evidence behind and laying low between heists.

Directed by Kevin Smith. Written by Robb Cullen and Mark Cullen. Warner Bros. Pictures release. Rated R for pervasive language including sexual references, violence and brief sexuality.

DINE! A FRESH TAKE ON SEASONAL CUISINE

LON’S AT HERMOSA ARTIST BRUNCH

Utilizing the Bounty of the Season All Year Round

Features African Wildlife Artist Fred Krakowiak

From savory stews in December to berry salads in July to warm apple pie in September, Cooking Light Cooking Through the Seasons offers a yearround guidebook to fresh meals the whole family will love. Organized by season, this exquisite and vibrant cookbook offers an array of recipes, more than 250 total, to showcase each ingredient at its peak, as well as more than 650 color photos. Drawing from the impressive Cooking Light Test Kitchen knowledge base and recipe catalog, Cooking Through the Seasons ($29.95) will be available April 13, 2010.

Fred Krakowiak, a leading artist in wildlife, will be the featured guest for an interactive Artist Brunch from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. March 21 at Lon’s at The Hermosa in Paradise Valley. Throughout the morning, Krakowiak will be available for oneon-one interaction with guests as he demonstrates his artistic techniques on Lon’s scenic patio. Krakowiak specializes in paintings of wildlife from Africa and across the world, capturing them in motion using mediums such as oil on copper and dye on silk.

In addition to a Seasonal Buying Guide outlining when fruits, vegetables and herbs are at their best and most abundant (and thus most practical budget-wise), this volume provides: · Flavor companions: Staples to have on hand that complement the flavor palate for each season—for example, cinnamon, cheddar cheese and maple syrup in the autumn. · Best ways to cook: Step-bystep directions for a variety of cooking methods, from braising to sautéing to grilling. · Ingredient insight: Side bars with interesting facts, unexpected details and helpful tips for buying, storing and using key ingredients—including arugula, cloves and melons. Visit www.oxmoorhouse.com for more information.

Blessed with the gift of an artist’s eye, he is able to detail every nuance of the animal’s very existence. Formally trained in the ancient art of Sumi (pictures in ink), he has more than 25 years of conventional study in various mediums including watercolor, oil, pen and ink, and dye on silk. Early on, Krakowiak realized his passion for painting as well as his genuine love for African wildlife. His paintings illustrate that what is missing is as important as what remains. This skill allows viewers to become involved in the painting by filling in the missing details with their imagination. Guests are in for a treat with Lon’s award-winning artful American cuisine and savory brunch specials, which may be enjoyed on the outdoor patio with views of Camelback Mountain or in the elegant dining room. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling Lon’s at The Hermosa at 602-955-7878. For more information visit www.lons.com and www.hermosainn.com.

Craft In A Can By Chuck Noll Ever since the folks at Oskar Blues in Lyons Colorado put the first craft beer into a can back in 2002, interest in canned craft beer has increased rapidly. Less than eight years later, more than

70 United States breweries have embraced canning their beers. Some, like Big Sky and New Belgium can beers that are already popular in bottles;

an incredible demand. Ska Brewing launched their Modus Hoperandi in both cans and bottles, but quickly dropped the bottled product due to high demand for the cans and insufficient production to accommodate both packages. So what makes cans so popular? There are a variety of reasons. First and foremost is quality. Cans are the best possible vessel to preserve freshness in craft beer. The two biggest enemies of beer are oxygen and light. Cans prevent both of these enemies from touching the beer far better than bottles do. The result is a beer that maintains its freshness longer and allows the drinker to better taste

of time involved in outdoor activities in Arizona, and nothing is better than craft beer in a can for the outdoors. Whether camping, boating, playing golf, hanging around at the pool, canned beers are just flat out better. Some places, lakes and public swimming pools come to mind, don’t even allow bottles, so cans are the only choice. In those situations, why not bring the best possible beer? Even when there is an option to bring bottles, cans are still preferred. Cans are lighter than bottles so when out camping, packing in and packing out the empties is simple. Why would you want to have to carry out heavy, empty

Giant Parking Lot bottles? Cans can be crushed, take up less space, and an empty case is easy to carry. Cans are also easier on the environment. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable and a can only takes eight weeks to make the trip from recycling center back to the canning line. In addition, they are almost fifty percent lighter than bottles so they cost less to ship, both when empty and when full. This greatly reduces their carbon footprint.

Beer Facts & Quotes

Ask for it at your favorite watering hole!

The first beer cans were produced in 1935. Before thermometers were invented, brewers would dip a thumb or finger into the mix to find the right temperature for adding yeast. Too cold, and the yeast wouldn’t grow. Too hot, and the yeast would die. This thumb in the beer is where “rule of thumb” comes from. “All right, brain, I don’t like you and you don’t like me so let’s just do this and I’ll get back to killing you with beer.” -Homer Simpson “You can only drink 30 or 40 glasses of beer a day, no matter how rich you are.” -Colonel Adolphus Busch

“A quart of ale is a dish for a king.” -William Shakespeare “I never met a pub I didn’t like.” -Pete Slosberg, Founder of Pete’s Brewing Company

lent his name to the flagship Dale’s Pale Ale and started what the folks at Oskar Blues humbly call The Canned Beer Apocalypse, states it very simply, “The myth is that high-quality craft beer has to be in a brown bottle.” When in reality, bottles were only used as a matter of economy. Canning lines were too big and too expensive; and minimum can orders were prohibitive. That is the main reason why bottles were the initial choice of craft brewers. To further put that perception to rest, look no further than the New York Times. Several years ago they conducted a blind taste test of 25 top selling pale ales. Dale’s Pale Ale won the competition and was named as the Best Pale Ale in America. It was also the only entrant in a can.

The Night Owl BY MARIA TOURTCHANINOVA

This week the Phoenix Open has finally arrived. Since we are all just really waiting to go to Bird’s Nest, I figured I would focus on who all exactly is making an appearance. After all alcohol is only half the party, you have to have the music. Wednesday, Feb. 24 Duck Soup, as stated in their own bio is best described as 3 cups of 60’s rock-nroll hits, 1 cup 50’s Classic Rock, 2 Tbsp. 70’s Groove and a dash of 60’s Funk. Sounds like a damn good soup…and yes I too would like to know where the duck comes in. DJ Roonie G is kind of a big deal in the DJ world. Here’s why: 2 Club World Awards, hot-spot residencies in Las Vegas, LA and Atlantic City and a fusion of not just music but video graphics of comedy, film and music all in tandem with the beat. He will be performing Wed-Sat. Reverend Run of RUN-D.M.C. headlines Wednesday night and does not exactly need an intro. I feel we all heard the remix of “Walk this Way” and “It’s Tricky.” And yes you have seen his reality show Run’s House on MTV-don’t lie. Steel Panther is a lot of rock and roll hair and spandex. In their first-time appearance at the Birds Nest, Steel Panther will be covering all the best 80’s metal bands such as Motley Crew, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses among others. Not into 80’s metal? Then go for the outfits and the promise of a crazy show. Thursday, Feb. 25 Champagne Tap is what happens when a group of doctors rock out in their house for too long - they get good enough to be a sweet cover band. Think Alice in Chains, Aerosmith, and ZZ Top. Collective Soul is one of the top 90’s bands and is headlining Thursday night - which is very exciting. “Whoa heaven let your light shine down” so glad I got to write that and not actually butcher it with my voice.

Friday, Feb. 26 The Chadwicks are Arizona’s very own cover band. Not only are classic rock songs nailed to a point, but the band keeps themselves current on the latest alternative tracks to hit the wavelength. Get ready to hear Greenday, Matchbox 20, and Weezer. Static is the Phoenix Suns’ official house band. Static provides high-energy covers and mixes of pop, R&B and top 40 hits from Beyonce, Lady Ga Ga, Black Eyed Peas and Michael Jackson. Saturday, Feb. 27 Kelley James is the new man to keep an eye out for on the West Coast. Think acoustic guitar with upbeat rhythms. John Mayer better step his game up. O.A.R is that one band you hear on the radio all the time. Does this chorus sound familiar, “How many times can I break till I’m shattered”… “I always turn the car around.” Yah they’ve been pretty big since the late 90’s and here’s your chance to see why! The W After party. On a quick side note, on Friday the 26th, the W hotel will be hosting the official Bird’s Nest after party. Even though cocktail attire is recommended, on this night golf attire is more than welcome. The best part is there will be a shuttle service running from Bird’s Nest to the W however, it may end at 10pm. Times may change so double check! GAME! ARENA FOOTBALL LEAGUE RE-LAUNCHES AFL Back and Better Than Ever After a one-year hiatus, the Arena Football League (AFL) is poised for a triumphant return. The league announced plans for the upcoming season, advanced progress toward expanding into the Philadelphia, Southern California, Denver and Pittsburgh markets and details of its contract with the NFL Network to broadcast AFL games in 2010. The regular season will kick off with a full slate of games the weekend of April 2-4. The 15-team league will play a 16-game schedule leading into the playoffs and the Arena Bowl the third weekend in August. “We’re back and we’re not going anywhere,” Commissioner Jerry Kurz said. “We are tremendously excited to bring back Arena Football to our ardent following of fans across the country. With a restructured business plan, we are poised to come back stronger than ever.” In 2008, fans embraced the AFL at a record pace. Games were played before an average crowd of almost

13,000 and 2008 was a record year for revenue. “The financial trouble the former league ran into was not due to a lack of fan interest and support,” Kurz said. “The demise of the former AFL was more a function of a severe recession and rising league and team operational costs. Once we had the opportunity to work as a cohesive group of owners in developing the plan to retool the business model, it was an easy decision for the league to re-launch.” Demand for Arena Football is such that there is significant interest in expansion for the 2011 season and serious negotiations are under way with at least four teams. “The game is as popular as it has ever been,” said Tampa Bay Storm Coach Tim Marcum, the AFL’s all-time winningest coach. Owners include former head coach and NFL Legend Mike Ditka, a returning Chicago Rush co-owner. “This was too good of an opportunity for me to pass up,” Ditka said. “I have the utmost respect for the players. They are playing for the pure love of the game.”

playing on, and wouldn’t you know it, right in the middle of your set! Being upright, noble folk, what music would you play to calm everyone down as they boil to death? We would play Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” and just keep that bass line thumping until everyone’s fully cooked! What do you do different that kicks ass over other bands? Our sound is versatile (meaning our songs don’t all sound the same) and we always put on a killer live show. We play shows with bands from many different musical genres from rock, indie, punk, rockabilly/psychobilly to metal. Tell us a secret about the band (just between us and 125,000 readers): We have a man stable. Only top condition studs need apply.

An Interview With…

THE GREEN LADY KILLERS Lady Van Buren Cherrybomb Annie Venom

Vocals/Guitar Drums Bass/Vocals

Web Sites for Band: myspace.com/thegreenladykillers facebook.com/pages/The-GreenLady-Killers/108530249312 twitter.com/GLKrocks Why did this band get started? Because there’s nothing more fun than rocking out with your friends. What’s the story behind the name? Well, girls and boys, once upon a time when Cherrybomb was a wee girl, she was afraid of The Green Lady, a ghoulish monster that lived in her closet. The Green Lady terrorized little Cherrybomb nightly with her evil glowing eyes, and Lady Van Buren, who grew up across the street from Cherrybomb, remembers the sinister powers of The Green Lady.

40

Buren moved to Seattle. One day, a roommate brought home the portrait of “Miss Wong,” a 1950’s painting by Vladimir Tretchikoff. Lady Van Buren and her roommates all agreed that the painting was so creepy that they didn’t even want to hang it up.

What is the official drink of the band? Lately it’s been Patron Silver – chilled with a lime is best.

Lady Van Buren’s friend from Phoenix came to visit in Seattle, saw “Miss Wong”, instantly fell in love with the painting and begged Lady Van Buren to send it to him. She happily sent away “Miss Wong” and the painting arrived on Halloween, just in time for her friend’s house party that night. During the Halloween party, he left to go buy more beer and while he was gone, his house caught fire, but “Miss Wong”, only a few feet from the flames, survived untouched.

How would you classify your music and influences? Straight up rock ‘n’ roll that makes you wanna shake your booty. Our music lends itself to driving fast cars and having a good time. Some of our influences include The Cramps, Eagles of Death Metal, Sonic Youth, The Runaways, The Pixies, Queens of the Stone Age, and Supersuckers. How often do you perform live? About 1-3 times per month.

A few years later Lady Van Buren and Cherrybomb started the band and were searching images on Google for show flyers. They typed in “green lady” and the image of “Miss Wong” appeared. Pretty strange, right? “Miss Wong” now graces the cover of The Green Lady Killer’s self titled EP and also hangs in Lady Van Buren’s house in a place of honor so she hopefully won’t start anymore fires!

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? A fan ran up to the stage, stripped off his shirt and begged us to all sign his chest, which we did with pleasure.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? In our case, since we are an all female band, the biggest misconception people have about us before they watch us play or hear our record is that we play soft rock or folk songs… then we bust out with the 100 watt Marshall Super Lead and the 300 watt Fender Bassman Pro and blow them away.

Are you any good? WE ROCK. HARD.

Who is the craziest band member and why? Annie Venom because she knows how to work her poison! An underwater volcanic eruption spews boiling water into the cruise ship you’re

What will people see when you perform live? Hot rock ‘n’ rollers playin loud bumpin music gettin sweaty in stilettos! Where are you playing locally in the near future?

EduRG CONFERENCE 2010 With nearly 6,000 institutions of higher learning in the United States alone, choosing the school best suited to their individual needs can be overwhelming to the over threemillion students who will graduate from high school this spring. Research can provide a wealth of information on any college or university, but requires time and regular access to the Internet or hours on the phone. Hoping to provide a time-saving, one-stop venue for students to meet face-to-face with schools from around the country, EduRG Conference 2010 was created to give young men and women the access they need to program information, financial aid assistance and networking opportunities with top educators – all under one roof, in one weekend. Hosted by Scottsdale, Arizona-based EDU Research Group (www.edurg. com), EduRG Conference 2010 will be held this Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., in the West Building of the Phoenix Convention Center, bringing students, teachers, businesses and technology together for the betterment of higher education.
