Succulent Supper, Then a Peerless Production Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre Will Have You Salivating for ‘09 Season
Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa defies any lame excuses you might impose on your weekly schedule concerning such entertainment options. “Many people still believe that at a dinner theatre you’ll get one of two things: Either a great meal with an amateurish performance, or an unsavory meal with a wonderfully entertaining performance,” says Will Prather, owner of Prather Entertainment Group, which owns and operates two Broadway Palms (Mesa and Ft. Myers, FL) and the Dutch Apple in Lancaster, PA. “The real trick here is to deliver on both these components and ensure that the guests experience is rewarded with both a healthy and flavorful meal combined with a show stopping production that brings you to your feet at the curtain call. We pride ourselves on delivering both of these elements at a terrific value.” The upcoming 2009 season at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is sure to demonstrate the continuing adherence to production and culinary quality that it has been offering Valley residents for the past decade. This is no small-time venue eking out an existence on donations and community events; this is a full-scale, logistically complex, high-end operation that nightly delivers on its promise of providing enticing fare and top shelf professional feature presentations.

“One of the main challenges we face putting a full scale musical on a dinner theatre stage is scaling the production back enough to fit in our space without hurting the integrity of the piece,” says JR McAlexander, National Music Supervisor for Prather Entertainment Group. “Musically speaking, I try to keep the sound of the October 23rd - October 29th, 2008
full orchestras used on Broadway with our smaller 4-5 piece orchestras. As far as our sets for each production go, we hire amazing designers from New York and throughout the country who are so creative with our space that they can come up with exhilarating scenic artistry that captures the same thing as the million dollar sets in New York and Las Vegas, but in the size and scope of our space. We have an amazing National Costume Director, John White, who designs all of our costumes in our PA warehouse to be shipped here before each production. His costumes can rival any Broadway or Regional Theatre in the country.” “The two Artistic Producers and I auditioned over 5000 actors last year in over 10 states to find the best talent America has to offer for our productions right here in Mesa. We are a fully professional theatre where everyone involved in our productions- from the actors to our ushersare paid employees. It is sometimes very difficult to scale the size of the casts back from the original size. The perfect example is ‘A Christmas Carol’. We are starting it this week at the Dutch Apple, but it was originally at Madison Square Garden with a cast of 58 people. We are doing it with 18 actors and 4 children. It is going to be very different but I feel we have not hurt the integrity of the piece at all. It is going to be an amazing production which will hopefully come here to Mesa in the next year or 2 for our Christmas season.” “We are the only 100% professional theatre in the area, and our shows can rival any musical you can see in the Valley. I had a theater colleague attend a production of ours a few years ago and I think AZWeeklyMagazine.com
he said it perfectly: You are not a dinner theatre, you are a Regional Theatre that serves a great dinner before the show!” Apart from the infrastructure of seasoned experts that makes Broadway Palm an unmistakably pleasurable place to call home for a night, the ambiance and functionality also has an obligation to accommodate this commitment to quality. “A dinner theatre facility should have free and convenient parking which always gets a visit to our theatre off to a good start,” Prather explains. “It should be large enough to accommodate crowds of up to 500 people, while still making it an intimate theatrical experience. It should have good signage, and plenty of bathroom stalls to minimize the amount of time that customers have to wait in line. Its food operation should run smoothly and efficiently, and the show must be thoroughly entertaining.” As any overseer of any respectable service business knows, however, if the staff does not meet the requisites for excellence that customers demand, the business will not be around for long. “Most importantly, your experience should include having the friendliest and most professional staff on hand to treat you to superb service, from the moment you make the reservation till the moment you leave the theatre,” Prather goes on. “At Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, you will be treated like a VIP by the friendliest, most professional, and courteous staff you’ll find in the service business. Secondly, you’ll be guaranteed flavorful and bountiful meals that feature all you can eat salad and hot food buffets – plus free desserts!” According to Artistic Producer M. Seth
Reines, the idea of dinner theatre is both practical and psychologically beneficial. “Since most patrons eat before going to the theatre anyway, why not combine a sumptuous buffet and live, professional theatre in one convenient location?” he asks. “It saves on gas and parking, and eliminates the tension of rush hour traffic. As 40 % of our audience has never attended live theatre before, dinner theatre provides a comfortable, non-threatening environment to escape from the world’s troubles for four to five hours. Patrons may not have been to the theatre before, but they have certainly dined out. So, we are a regional theatre serving great meals, offering terrific customer service, and putting on elaborately-mounted, entertaining productions with professional actors, directors, choreographers and designers from New York, Chicago, and other major cities.” Many actors who have performed at the Broadway Palm are presently involved with some heavy gigs in New York. “Former actors are now in Broadway shows including ‘Wicked’, ‘Legally Blonde’, ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘In The Heights’, ‘Spring Awakening’, ‘Billy Elliot’, and ‘Little Mermaid’,” says Reines. “As the biggest producer of dinner theatre in the United States (Prather Entertainment Group), we get first rights to the best new Broadway shows. And since many of our shows play all three of our venues (Dutch Apple in PA and Broadway Palm in FL and AZ), our production budgets are often three times that of other local professional theatre troupes. In short, as Arizona’s premiere dinner theatre experience, Broadway Palm is unbeatable locally and nationally!”

Saw V
Director Mike Leigh has been nominated for five Oscars, and has either won or been nominated for numerous other awards. The acclaimed director has brought us such powerful films as Secrets and Lies and Vera Drake. In his latest work, Happy Go Lucky, Sally Hawkins plays Poppy, an always cheerful London schoolteacher who exudes optimism and charm, despite the daily nags, drags, and negativity around her.
Just when you thought Jigsaw was done, he’s back and still up to no good! And yes, Tobin Bell is back as Jigsaw. Events take an unexpected twist when forensics expert Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) goes on the hunt in order to protect the secret that he is the newest person to carry on Jigsaw’s legacy.
When asked if he could be around someone as cheerily glee as his main character on a consistent basis, Leigh answered, “I would love to hang out with Poppy. She’s a gas. What’s important about Poppy is that she’s not mindlessly happy. She’s fulfilled, focused; she’s a proper person.” “We all know people like Poppy,” explains Leigh. But he insists that “She’s not a direct portrait. She’s a created character. What I do is collaborate with each actor to invent a character. I collaborated with Sally Hawkins. She’s (Poppy) a character we invented.” Like other Leigh films, Happy Go Lucky comes from a basic premise. “What we shoot is very precise, thorough, and rehearsed,” he says. “There is no actual script as such, it is a document. We contract people to come and take part and create the characters and explore relationships. We build up this improvised world of the characters, out of which I then extract, go out on location, shoot and make it up as I go along.” Where did the idea for the film come from? “I can’t tell you where it came from, except, it was a sense of what I wanted to do next,” says Leigh. “I make films to tell stories. I am a compulsive storyteller. All my life… there is a compulsive need to make films. So I shall go on doing it until nature intervenes.” The Arizona premiere of Happy Go Lucky took place at the Scottsdale Film Festival just days ago. Audiences concluded the film with
Starring Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson, Betsy Russell, Julie Benz, and Meagan Good. Lionsgate release; Rated R for sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language, and brief nudity. Runtime: 88 min.
High School Musical 3: Senior Year a warm round of applause, which echoed the view of audiences around the world who already had a chance to see the film. “Reaction has been warm and positive,” Leigh affirms. “The important thing is that the film speaks to people. We world premiered it at the Berlin Film Festival and it blew people away. It was fantastic. It talks to people.” In addition to telling stories, Leigh also has a goal when making a film: “My lifetime crusade is to put real people on the screen, like the way people are.” This motto is evident, and is part of the appeal of the film that features everyday characters audiences can genuinely connect with. With powerful performances by Hawkins and co-star Eddie Marsan, Happy Go Lucky should be considered for a few Oscar nods come award season. But Leigh doesn’t like to take credit for the work his talent delivers. “Directing is not about having to drag blood out of a stone,” he explains,” it’s about choosing from the rich harvest of choices.”

Following in the tradition of the first two installments, we join Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens), who are now seniors, as they struggle with the thought of being separated from each other as college approaches. Along with the rest of the Wildcats, they stage a spring musical to address their experiences, hopes, and fears about their future. Starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Olesya Rulin, Chris Warren Jr., Ryne Sanborn, KayCee Stroh, and Bart Johnson. Walt Disney Studios release. Rated G; Runtime: 112 min.
Stan’s “Pick Of The Week” By Stan Robinson
Pride and Glory: The last thing you want to uncover... is the truth This police drama is about the truth, a central theme in a few movies of late. In last year’s Michael Clayton, the truth can be adjusted. In this year’s Traitor, the truth is complicated. I’m adding my own tag-line: The truth is a matter of perspective, as we view this story of a New York family with a generational tradition of police officers. The moral conviction of a family of police officers is put to the test when Ray Tierney (Edward Norton), while investigating a case, finds that clues are pointing to a massive police corruption scandal, which may involve his brother-in-law (Colin Farrell).

As Ray probes deeper, indications of a conspiracy and hidden truths take center stage. Not only could it damage the Tierney legacy, but it could cast an accusatory indictment of the entire New York City Police Department. Starring Colin Farrell, Edward Norton, Jon Voight, Noah Emmerich, Jennifer Ehle, Lake Bell, and Carmen Ejogo. New Line Cinema release; Rated R for strong violence, pervasive language and brief drug content; Runtime: 125 min.

Patti Smith: Dream of Life
This documentary by director/writer Steven Sebring, is an intimate portrait of poet, painter, musician and singer Patti Smith that mirrors the essence of the artist herself. Patti Smith is credited with being a strong influential force in the birth of punk rock with her 1975 debut album Horses. Often called the “Godmother of Punk”, she integrated the beat poetry performance style with rock. Patti Smith’s most popular tune, “Because the Night”, was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. In 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Featuring Patti Smith, Jay Dee Daugherty, Flea, Philip Glass, Lenny Kaye, Sam Shepard, Benjamin Smoke, and Tom Verlaine. Dr. King’s Legacy Alive at Dream Dinner Phoenix- On Saturday, November 1st, the Arizona Dream Builder Foundation will hold its first ‘Dream Dinner’ at the Downtown Phoenix Hyatt Hotel starting at 6 pm, to help raise money to fund its educational programs. In this year’s unprecedented political climate, evidence of progress toward Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream that he revealed in his celebrated 1963 speech is becoming more evident; nontraditional presidential nominees in both major political parties are proving that the country is embracing tolerance and racial equality like never before. The Arizona Dream Builder Foundation is a newly established nonprofit organization that is providing scholarship opportunities that support King’s dream and encourage Arizona youth to live the tenets he upheld so that one day they will be leaders
of our state. The Foundation awards high school students who embrace and embody the tenets of King and other great leaders by providing academic scholarships and other educational experiences.
A prominent Valley resident and an honorary guest for the Dream Dinner event actually knew King and stands behind the Foundation’s efforts to foster tenets such as nonviolence, social justice, and respect upheld by King and other great leaders. “I had the chance to meet Martin Luther King when I lived in Cleveland and he was responsible for shaping many of my dreams and goals during those very difficult times of the civil rights movement,” said Jesse Ary, the first African American director of the Phoenix YMCA and a former member of the Arizona Board of Education. “The Arizona Dream
Builder Foundation is striving to carry on Dr. King’s influence and help students of this generation and future generations aim higher and succeed.” The Foundation will award three exemplary students college scholarships at the Dream Dinner event. The Foundation’s unique high school internship program, The Dream Intern, which will help high school students get an early hands-on work experience to help determine a career path, will also be launched that evening. Several businesses, companies, and individuals who support the Foundation will also be recognized. For more information on the Arizona Dream Builder Foundation, to be a sponsor for one of its programs, or to purchase tickets for this year’s AZ Dream Dinner, please visit www. azdreambuilder.org or call (480) 557-4734.

They’ll find a convenient and costeffective solution for their families at Marketside.” Open from 7am to 10pm daily, Marketside offers customers an October 23rd - October 29th, 2008
alternative way to shop for groceries. Designed to serve customers living in close proximity, the small neighborhood locations are less than half the size of a conventional supermarket and are built to help customers get in and out quickly. For example, multiple registers are all staffed with associates who aim to make every line an express lane; well-trained “Meal Specialists” – people who have a passion for food – help customers find the right meals or ingredients; and low shelves and simple signs ensure that customers can see where they want to go for the next item on their shopping list. All Marketside products have been chosen with the customer in mind. Each meal solution was created by a team of professional chefs who were trained at top culinary schools and worked at some of the world’s finest restaurants. Ample parking, knowledgeable staff and an assortment of essential everyday items combine to make Marketside an ideal choice for a quick trip to the grocery store. Owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the Marketside retail pilots launched in the Valley on October 4th. For more information, please visit www. marketside.com.

Fairmont Scottsdale Introduces New Menu Items Scottsdale- Bucking the trend of culinary excess, lengthy, adjectiveladen menus and complex dishes filled with exotic ingredients, The Grill at the Fairmont Scottsdale presents a new menu of perfectly prepared fresh seafood, succulent steaks, and an awardwinning selection of wines. In short, the longtime Valley favorite offers a menu of simple, classic, and unfussy fine food provided with attentive, friendly service in a relaxed setting with sweeping views of the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course. “The new Grill menu features a lot of wonderful new items, but continues to offer our guests the same high-quality, perfect preparation, and the excellent service that we are known for,” said Executive Chef Noah Bekofsky. For its all-new menu, The Grill has placed strong emphasis on seafood and now offers a variety of fresh, flown-in-daily items ranging from organic King Salmon to Bluenose Sea Bass to Pacific Snapper. Each fish dish is simply prepared on the grill with only minimal sauces and seasonings to enhance natural flavors. The new signature dish is a 14-ounce Long Bone Swordfish Chop, a moist “chop” with bone attached that comes from the “collar bone” area of the fish
near the gills, which has a higher fat content and delivers a moist, juicy cut. The swordfish is pan-seared and seasoned lightly with The Grill’s savory Chimichurri Rub. For the turf portion of menu, guests will enjoy the signature Cowboy Chop, a 22-ounce, certified Angus beef, bone-in ribeye steak. Featuring fine marbling for ultimate tenderness and flavor, certified Angus beef provides consistently superior meat quality ensuring a great steak on every visit. The Cowboy Chop’s superior flavor is enhanced with The Grill’s own light seasoning and then broiled at 850 degrees to sear in moisture and flavor. Rounding out the menu are the Natural Veal Chop, Natural Pork Chop and Sonoma Natural Half Chicken, all free-range and raised without the use of antibiotics, steroids or hormones, as well as New Zealand Lamb Chops, New York Strip Steak, and Filet Mignon. The Grill serves dinner from 6 to 9pm nightly, and also is open daily for breakfast and lunch. It is located at the TPC Scottsdale Clubhouse, north of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard at Bell Road and the Greenway-Hayden Loop. For reservations, call (480) 585-4848.

Transylvania: Embrace the Darkness
Phoenix- On Halloween, and every Friday before and after, the darkest bar will be Transylvania in Phoenix (Palazzo regularly). Every Friday it opens its door for creatures and fiends grim and glamorous, regularly fashioned eerily similar to famous ghoulish characters, from Lestat to Cousin It! On the catwalk and in the garden of cast-iron, they lurk among old figures from ancient times. When the clock strikes midnight, the chandelier will shimmer star lights from above, and the walls will glow under black lights for every soul to see bone-chilling scenes of bats, ravens, and a creaky mansion surrounded by skeleton trees. Step inside and drink of the “Red Death” as you enjoy life among the dead. Let every Friday be Halloween, Oct 31st. Transylvania rises every Friday from Palazzo, located at 710 N Central Ave. in Phoenix. For more information, please log onto www.tranzylvania.net/.

The Sets: Voltaire
Tempe- Before you dive into a wild night of partying on Halloween, catch satiristsinger Voltaire on October 24th with a three-hour tour at The Sets for his new CD, To the Bottom of the Sea, which has seen the #1 slot on CDbaby.com. Smart, handsome, and funny, he’s great with kids, too! You may recall the song, “Land of the Dead” from Cartoon Network’s the Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy; if you haven’t, you’ll be sure to enjoy his melodic deliveries on subjects like Star Trek, zombies, and demon slayers. Could this Gothic Renaissance man with a Gypsy pirate band be part-

The event night will be held in conjunction with the Brazil:Sambossica CD release by DJ Seduce on Afro:Baile Records. Festivities are must-sees, as the evening will bring out live music, art, fashion, photo, video, food, and fun. The airwaves will be full as DJ Seduce is set to host the evening spinning an eclectic fusion of Afro:Brazilian, Samba, Bossa Nova, and featured songs from the October 23rd - October 29th, 2008
latest album. Also joining the fun will be the decorative boutique Vocelinda, showcasing the latest designs from the Brazilian inspired earring designer Lindsey Hudek. The celebration doesn’t stop there, as local artist David Ware will be painting live on canvas with a focus on Brazilian culture, while Alonso M. from Photobyalonso.com will be on hand snapping photos and filming live footage of the evening’s celebration. Big screen video projections of various Brazilian Carnivals and concert videos will be playing all night, keeping the true feel of a Brazilian celebration. For the savvy food and drink connoisseur, a special Brazilian Caipirinha Bar will be the cocktail of choice, and a full restaurant menu will be served late to keep attendees feeling delightful. BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE
Boo! Was that scary? Probably not, but what happened to me last week is…I got married! So, I’m sure you’ve noticed and lamented over the absence of the Night Owl column the past two weeks, but have no fear; I am back. With my first column wearing a wedding ring, please excuse typos as my fingers are now leaning left. But I have managed nonetheless, so you can read to find out which parties you should consider going to in my Halloween party spectacular. For those wondering, my little black book will be put on E-bay. There’s a lot of, uhm, good numbers in there. Starting bid? Can you really put a price on it? Halloween Parties: You all know how much I love my holidays, but Halloween is my very favorite. How many times a year does everyone dress up in ridiculous and often racy costumes and assume another identity? One, and its Halloween. And a Scottsdale Halloween is one of the best in the nation, as the weather is great and the costumes are outrageous, sexy, and creative. With so many parties out there, which are the best? As I’ve been to many of them in the past, here are my picks to have a wild and memorable Halloween night (and it’s on Friday too, so get ready for debauchery!): The Ghost Ball: The Ghost Ball, by far, is the Valley’s hottest and most wellrespected Halloween event, and my favorite overall event of the year. Now in its 8th year, the Ghost Ball is held in the blocked off street between Axis-Radius and Suede nightclubs in Scottsdale, and boasts 50,000 feet of party space. The costumes at Ghost Ball are the best part as people really go all out, so don’t even think of showing up in “everyday” clothes or you will be heckled to misery. This year the Ghost Ball will have 5 DJs, multiple costume contests, and my favorite (and the best) Valley band, EastonAshe, will perform. Admission is $20, but it is worth every penny. Tickets can be purchased at axis-radius.com.
18
Wrigley Mansion Party: Each year the Wrigley Mansion has a great Halloween party that is tons of fun. A lot of it has to do with the location, the Wrigley Mansion, which is spooky and has a haunted history and tales of ghosts roaming the hall. Plus, it is beautiful and overlooks the entire Valley. In addition to the location, the party is always exciting, with a lot of great costumes and general craziness happening throughout the many nooks and crannies within the mansion. This year’s party features a couple of live bands (one upstairs and one downstairs), DJs, complimentary food, and tarot card readers. Tickets are on the pricey side, $50, but it is a great time in an unbeatable location. For more info or to purchase tickets, visit wrigleymansionclub.com. Stone Rose Lounge: Okay, this is the first year of this party, but it looks like it may have legs and it features something no other party does; a direct affiliation with a hotel so everyone can party the night away and then walk back to their rooms. The Stone Rose Lounge, located at the Scottsdale Fairmont, is a gorgeous and elegant lounge which has become one of the Valley’s premier nightlife destinations, and this is their first shot at a Halloween party, The Haunted Hotel Halloween Ball. Judging by the regular Stone Rose crowd, expect people with money and sophistication, and less craziness than some of the other parties. This ball promises haunting by old Hollywood glamour so expect to see Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and other ghosts of Hollywood past. The party will feature live music, DJs, tarot card readings, fortune tellers and celebrity guests (no, not me). I’m gonna swing by as it is intriguing, and you should consider it too (especially if you don’t want to hassle with Old Town crowds). For reservations to the party, call (480) 419-3190, and you better hurry as space to this one is quite limited.

Letter From The Editor Choices ²
We have a big choice to make, people. And no, I’m not referring to the upcoming Election. Actually, it’s related to the upcoming Election, but kind of like how water is related to Kevin Lambert celery. I’m referring to that underlying framework of choices that determines the course of our lives. I’m talking about making a choice about choices. I’m talking about, like, getting totally deep here.
choice is based on the cumulative choices made before it. (For those unfamiliar with the game, the contestant drops a disc at the top of an inclined surface that is perforated with staggered pegs, so that it goes either left or right around each peg as gravity pulls it downward- ).
should be thrown on the floor or put in my mouth). Another person’s first peg was encountered in some bombed-out village in Lebanon. Someone else’s, a Texas ranch. And so on. It’s a crap shoot where and how we start out, and consequently, where and how
We have time to evaluate some choices before we make them, like the Obama/ McCain showdown in November; others we have to make in a split second, like where to run after pulling a stuffed animal across the road with fishing line in front of a police cruiser late at night after sneaking out of your house with your friends. For example. We need to appreciate the choices we have, and appreciate the people who have arrived at a much different outcome on the Plinko board than ourselves. I came to my first peg- I don’t know exactly what it was- at some point in my toddlerhood in rural Vermont (I think it had something to do with Cheerios and whether they
we end up. Countless choices accumulate and take form in human behavior, encapsulated and represented in living, breathing, thinking organisms. It’s undeniably humbling to consider the vast diversity of human culture. It’s also undeniably difficult to abandon the impulse of self-preservation at face value. When someone on TV in another country is rejoicing at 9/11, for instance, is the first question you ask yourself, “Why do they hate us/wanna kill us?” or is it closer to, “How do we stop them?/ kill them?”. It’s a basic premise of human nature that we tend to destroy what we do not

Since it is all anyone is talking about, we’ll take the Election as a specific example. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican; whether Obama is your best bro or McCain is your main man; whether you don’t like either candidate and vote differently; whether you’re ‘not political’ or you don’t vote at all, it is essential that you acknowledge and welcome the balance that we have lest we fly into some apocalyptic B-movie world of complete social disorder. What if we were all liberal? The left wing would consist of nihilistic anarchists, and
Life is basically constructed of constantlypresented decisions, as if a person is the playing piece in a metaphorical Plinko game from ‘The Price is Right’: Each

understand as a reaction to wanting to stay alive; we suppress our fears of that which might hurt us by controlling its influence. It’s why wolves were massacred by the millions in North America, and it’s why Michael Jackson is… well, just, is.
AZWeeklyMagazine.com
And what if we were all conservative? The left wing would include corrupt oil executives and insurance CEOs, while the right wing would see death-dealing psychopaths maiming each other over launch codes. We would all take pills at scheduled times to suppress our emotions, dismemberment by spoon would be among the many popular methods of capital punishment, and the Yankees would be semi-cyborg clones. You got a problem when fascists are considered middle of the road.
What am I getting at? I’m getting at the dualities we need to celebrate in our lives. I’m getting at looking over at someone else’s Plinko board and wondering what it’s like over there. You should espouse the values and represent the ideologies you have come to adopt over your lifetime, but the endless barrage of seemingly indoctrinated animosity that flies around every 4 years is unnecessary, as it is at any other time of the year. Figure out what you want from your President, then vote. If you want to be an activist and help undecided voters understand your point of view in a way that you hope will sway their vote to your candidate, then do it. But do it without the vitriol; be an activist, not a deactivist. You can probably guess my political inclination, but to put it plainly, politics and how it’s portrayed is full of the worst things about us; it’s a realization that we can all basically acknowledge. Whether it’s the 2008 Presidential Election; your buddy who puts mayonnaise on his hot dog, or the guy who moved in next door whose place always smells like what is close to but not exactly chicken soup, make the choice to accept that we all started on different Plinko boards, that each one is made of the same stuff, and that no one’s is any better, worse, or more important than anyone else’s.
If one considers these scenarios, Democrats and Republicans have struck what is essentially a healthy balance when it comes to government.
We have a big choice to make, people. We can choose to get over ourselves and celebrate choices, or we can choose to keep placing ourselves at smack dab dead center of the universe, and ignoring all of those choices that we’ve never made.
...because life is too important to be taken seriously!

the right wing would be like hippies from 1969. We would all smell a little worse, nobody’s dishes would get done, animals would roam the halls of Congress, and Alec Baldwin would get a bigger statue than Lincoln. It would be a damn mess. You have a problem when PETA is considered middle of the road.

Test Drive: Audi R-8 By Chad Haire
Over the years, I have driven plenty of exotic sports machines, and while most delivered in the performance department, there were few that didn’t have at least some drawbacks. Examples include a bone jarring stiff ride, cramped driving position, and excess road noise. But the Audi R-8 is different. The R-8 is comfortable to drive. Wind noise is low on the freeway, and the ride is smooth on short jaunts and long trips. Driving position is excellent, and the climate control and sound systems ooze luxury. Even with a mid-engine placement, handling is top grade, and with 420 horsepower, this rig reached 60 mph in just over 4 seconds. The styling is attention getting; I drove around in Scottsdale and got plenty of looks (Far more than I have with any other car)! The $110,000 base price tag is a steal, although I am not sure about that optional leather trim that added another $5,500. There is a waiting list for the Audi R-8, so stand in line or bid in the aftermarket at a higher price.

The Voodoo Organist Hits the Rhythm Room

Neil Diamond
L.A. Guns
Phoenix- The Voodoo Organist, the underground music scene’s favorite traveling sideshow preacher/road warrior, has released Darwin Dance Hall Days, a collection of 13 songs of love, lust, murder, and rivers of whisky set against a backdrop of the Mojave Desert, and will be performing on Thursday, October 30th at the Rhythm Room (1019 E. Indian School Rd. in Phoenix). A former goth industrialist from Detroit, whose high school band opened for Nine Inch Nails and many others in the 90’s, Scott Wexton has played the organ since the age of 10. He spent time in various bands in cities around the country before settling in Los Angeles at the turn of the century and reinventing himself as the Voodoo Organist. For the last several years he’s crafted and refined his unique yet instantly recognizable sound on the road, touring full time first as a one-man band and then, with the addition of drummer Robin Kennon (The Necro Tonz), as a two-man army of darkness. Even though just a two-piece, they have the sound and intensity of a full band. Wexton’s songs have been featured in indie horror movies such as “Return of the Living Dead IV” and “Die, You Zombie Bastards.” Onstage he’s appeared with many great acts, including as a guest keyboardist for Dave Vanian’s Phantom Chords, and as the Voodoo Organist he’s played with bands like Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers, Black Heart Processon, Bob Log III, and Stan Ridgway. This release will be a two disc CD/DVD set that will feature an assortment of extras, including rare bonus tracks such as covers of Iron Maiden’s “Hallowed Be Thy Name,” over an hour of live performance footage from With Full Force, Download and Rock in Rio festivals, three uncensored music videos for “Aesthetics of Hate,” “Now I Lay Thee Down” and “Halo,” a “making of” featurette on each video, “The Making of The Blackening” and
expanded artwork. There’s also what many hardcore fans have been rabidly waiting for: 4 never-beforeseen performances of Machine Head celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album, Burn My Eyes, captured in Philadelphia in 2004. This special edition is a must have for any fan of this Bay Area band that is steadily carving out “legendary status” for itself within the metal scene.

Phoenix - The Arizona Office of Tourism is hoping to make visitors not only see Arizona but hear Arizona as well. The state agency recently launched a musical project that aims to do just that. The Arizona Music Project is a sixminute musical suite that captures the state’s diverse geography, culture and heritage – all in music. The suite was written and produced by award-winning, Phoenix composer Jason Camiolo and recorded by 19 musicians from around the state. The Arizona Music Project aims to generate awareness and expand perceptions about Arizona while at the same time engaging visitors and residents alike. The musical suite has four distinct works, each one showcasing the state’s cultural liveliness, exhilarating scenery, geographic diversity and relaxing lifestyle. The music takes listeners on an amazing adventure while illustrating the vibrancy that makes Arizona so unique to visitors nationwide. Several well-known Arizona musicians lent their talents to the project, including Gabriel Ayala and Nick Sterling. Ayala is a renowned
classical guitarist from the Yaqui Indian tribe who has performed at venues around the world, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Sterling, a musical prodigy who started playing at the age of 7, rose to fame playing guitar alongside major acts including The Black Crowes, The Doobie Brothers and Blues Traveler. Music lovers interested in learning more about the project can visit MySpace.com/arizonamusicproject or www.Arizonaguide.com.

ASU Alum Can Show Spirit via Essay
Ok, so you know you’ve seen ‘em before, in the stands proudly cheering their school with face paint gleaming. They own absolutely every form of ASU gear imaginable, and before you know it, even their little ones are wearing Sun Devil onesies. But really, who is the most spirited ASU alum? Bank of America is holding the MyExpression Search for Alumni Passion contest in conjunction with the launch of its MyExpression alumni checking and credit card accounts for ASU alumni. The essay contest will find the Arizona State University alum who most convincingly and creatively prove their Sun Devil spirit. The most avid alum/fan will receive a $500 cash prize and a $10,000 donation in their name to the ASU Alumni Association (and with $500 who knows how many onesies you can buy?!). For full details, contest rules and to enter, visit: www.bankofamerica.com/alumnipassion.

Prescott- The city of Prescott will play host to its own “fall classic” on Sunday, October 26th at 1pm when a pair of vintage Arizona baseball teams meet in a 1928 baseball exhibition game at Ken Lindley Field, 702 E. Gurley St. The Phoenix Senators and Bisbee Bees, teams modeled after actual minor league teams from the early 20th Century, will give fans a realistic look at how the game was played when it was truly “America’s pastime.” The gates and concessions will open at 12:30pm for this
family-friendly event that will feature scorecards and period music. Babe Ruth Concessions will dish up such fare as Red Hot Chicago Dogs and, of course, peanuts and Cracker Jacks. Admission is by donation. Proceeds from the event will benefit Sharlot Hall Museum, which was founded in 1928 and is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. In conjunction with the game, the

Museum will sponsor a special free lecture exploring the good old days of baseball in America on Saturday, October 25th at 1pm. J. Stuart Rosebrook, Ph.D., a writer, researcher and historian who lives in Tempe, will deliver “Diamonds in the Desert: Arizona, Baseball and America in 1928” in the Museum Center gallery. Rosebrook’s lecture will focus on 1928, the year that professional baseball returned to Arizona after 13 years of town ball and what he calls “outlaw leagues.” The original Phoenix Senators began playing in 1915, and the Bees in 1928. Today’s teams are non-profit, independent groups of vintage baseball players who have obtained vintage-style uniforms and equipment, including oldstyle bats, balls, and gloves. The gloves they’ll be using for the exhibition are based on pre-1900 styles, but are close enough to the 1920’s gloves that the visual effect will be similar for fans. Following 19th Century standards, the players’ hats have no logos and their uniforms have no numbers or names, although the team names appear on the front of the players’ jerseys. In addition to raising money for Sharlot Hall Museum, the teams seek to increase interest in the history of Arizona baseball and to “inspire Prescott residents to start their own team,” says Neil Singh, captain of the Phoenix Senators Baseball Club. For further information, contact Singh at (602) 697-2405 or Ryan Flahive at Sharlot Hall Museum, (928) 445-3122. Both teams also maintain blogs at phoenixsenators.org and bisbeebees. com. The Sharlot Hall Museum is located at 415 W. Gurley St. in downtown Prescott. More information about this and other Museum events is available online at www.sharlot.org. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

C I S U M S W E N DJ AM, Travis Barker Coping with Crash Aftermath
Former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker was recently released from the Grossman Burn Center in LA after extensive surgery on his hands and legs. His friend and the only other survivor of a plane crash in Columbia, SC that killed four people, DJ AM, is already back at the turn tables. Barker had a number of skin grafts and other minor surgeries, according to his ex-wife Shanna Moakler. DJ AM brought his spinning superiority to an October 15th Jay-Z concert in Hollywood, marking the first time he has performed since the tragic accident.
Danity’s Dawn Richard Singing Solo?
The answer is a definitive ‘NO’, according to one of three Danity Kane survivors, Dawn Richard. The king of perpetually peculiar proclivity, P. Diddy, got rid of both Aubrey O’Day and D. Woods in the finale of Making the Band 4. Since then, speculations as to the fate of the group and its members have been thrown around more often than Sarah Palin sound bites on CNN’s Election Day coverage, including whether Richard is looking to pursue a solo career. Though the talented 25 year-old has stated that she has always put the band ahead of herself, she conceded that were Diddy looking to promote her as an individual, she would ‘be honored’ and ‘work hard’.
Janet’s Back; Will there be More Trouble? Janet Jackson is back on her ‘Rock Witchu’ tour again after a bout with what she described as ‘severe migraine headaches and vertigo’. The October 15th, Washington DC date saw the performer make her electric return after receiving hospitalization and treatment for the condition. Her next stops consist of east coast shows in Atlanta, New York, and East Rutherford, NJ, as well as dates in Houston and Dallas. Severe migraine headaches and vertigo? We thought the medical term for those symptoms was ‘Bad hangover’.
Pumpkins Rock Late Night on Way to 20th Anniversary Tour

The Smashing Pumpkins recently played their new song, “G.L.O.W.” at the Scream Awards on Spike TV, and on October 24th, Billy Corgan and crew will test it out on the studio and nationwide audiences of late night program Jimmy Kimmel Live. The pumpkins kick off their 20th Anniversary tour on Halloween in Columbus, OH, which will feature Corgan, original drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, and touring musicians Jeff Schroeder (guitar), Ginger Reyes (bass), and Lisa Harriton (keys). In an interview with Rolling Stone, Corgan said the band will begin recording a new album in 2009.

Barbie adds, “The B-12 and B-6 injections (weekly) as well as the supplements given by the program really help curb your appetite, and you never really feel uncomfortably hungry. I love eating veggies, which are part of the diet; I have tons of energy and it isn’t drudgery at all. The Medi staff continues to cheer me on and as I near the halfway-point on my way to lose 50 lbs once and for all, I know I will make it.”
“I’ve found it easier each week,” said Barbie. “I don’t crave the quantity of food I used to and I find myself getting full much quicker. I also don’t want to eat all the junk foods and carbohydrate-rich foods I used to crave, which contributed to my weight gain.” This adjustment in behavior is one of the cornerstones of the Medi-Weightloss program, and as we all know, any good diet has to create a lifestyle change and not just a temporary diversion from certain foods. “People find that they don’t even want a lot of the foods they used to crave after the program reaches maintenance level,” said Sarah Brown, Co-owner of the Scottsdale center. “They could actually eat a lot of the

It has now been 5 weeks of Barbie’s consistent (more or less) allegiance to the MediWeightloss program, which consists of a modified, low-carbohydrate diet, nutritional supplementation, vitamin B-12 and B-6 shots, and weekly Medical Doctor supervision. “I am finding it easier all the time to do the diet plan, which is not that hard after all,” said Jonas. “It’s actually easier than Weight Watchers and all the other diets I’ve tried. On her 5th week, Barbie has continued to improve and her total weight loss is at 23 lbs, with only fat lost and no reduction in valuable lean mass. For bean-counters, that’s .66 lbs of pure fat a day for 35 straight days! At this point, most would agree the diet is working, and consistently so. But we had to ask, “Just how hard is the diet…Really?”
