Tim Eriksen is the only musician to have shared the stage with both Kurt Cobain and Doc Watson (not to mention Jack White and Ralph Stanley), and his media appearances have ranged from “A Prairie Home Companion” to the Academy Awards. Having graduated from early shows at punk mecca CBGB, Eriksen has performed more recently as a soloist in Evan Chambers’s symphonic work “The Old Burying Ground” at his Carnegie Hall debut and with Omar Sosa during two week-long stints at the Blue Note Jazz Club. In the studio, he has worked with producers including Joe Boyd, T-Bone Burnett, and Steve Albini. Ultimately, Tim Eriksen is not really part of any one scene. “The scene I exist in doesn’t really exist,” he insists. He is a performer with “a passion for the medium of a live performance.”

But these are only the tip of his musical iceberg. He is also one of the best hopes for keeping alive the chain of Anglo-American balladry, a tradition stretching across an ocean and many centuries of oral tradition, still unbroken after one century of recorded music.

An imaginative and wonderful GO, DOG. GO! opened this weekend to a nearly sold out performance loved by every dog and child in the house! Oh this was P.D. Eastman’s classic children’s book in full color with big dogs - little dogs - colored dogs - working dogs - music dogs - MC dogs, and so much fun! Director Dog David Sarr and all the ‘Dog Crew” have crafted the perfect play for the whole family! There’s a kind and sweet Musician Dog (played by the joyful Tony Putrino) playing his accordion tunes all through this Dog adventure. There’s also “Hattie”/Spotted Dog, played by the cute and lovable Katie McFadzen, who teaches all the dogs it’s ok to say you don’t like something as long as you say it honestly. Matt Reeves was completely taken back by screenwriter John Ajvide Lindqvist’s Swedish coming-of-age vampire drama “Let the Right One In.” Therefore, when he was approached by Hammer and Overture to direct an American remake, he initially declined.

Filmmaker Adam Green describes the process of making one’s first independent movie as essentially taking part in an abusive relationship.

“Most remakes are terrible,” Reeves explains. “Soulless retreads or bastardizations of the story that really sort of run roughshod of everything that was probably the initial impulse of the original.” However, after having read the novel on which the film was based, Reeves suddenly saw an opportunity to place Lindqvist’s myth into an American context. After all, the story revolved around the concept of growing up during the 1980’s – something with which Reeves could personally identify. “I had such a connection to what it was

“You love it to death but, at the same time, you go through so much awful [crap] that by the time the movie comes out you don’t know whether to be happy or cry,” explains Green, noting that he was taken off guard by the success of his 2006 homage to old-school slashers “Hatchet.” It just wasn’t the type of movie people were making and we didn’t realize that it was going to reach as many people as it did.” Naturally, having even spawned a following of fans that refer to themselves as the “Hatchet Army,” Green received pressure to make a sequel to the film. In “Hatchet II,” Danielle Harris stars as Marybeth, a young woman who escapes the clutches of a deformed serial killer and, after having learned the truth about her family’s connection to the hatchet-wielding madman, returns to the swamp along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her loved ones and exact bloody revenge against the bayou butcher. “I had always known what the sequel was going to be and when people see it they will see how well this fits together with the first one and how many things pay off and are explained,” Green says. “It’s this huge honor to be standing on a set that fans gave you the right to be on. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ DVD 60th Anniversary Edition By Randy Montgomery

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has released the classic Alice in Wonderland on Blu-ray disc for the first time in celebration of the film’s 60th Anniversary. The two disc combo pack also comes with a DVD copy and numerous exclusive extras. The studio boasts that this edition features “digital restoration, pristine sound and unparalleled picture quality.” Technology aside, the true joy of this collector’s edition are the bonuses that introduce us to the original voice and model for Alice, Kathryn Beaumont. Commenting on the anniversary edition, Beaumont says, “It is amazing. I didn’t realize there would be such a difference from DVD to Blu-ray; the color is so much more vibrant. With the animation, you notice the feeling of depth even more. The detail in the background shows up so well. It was fascinating to see this film in this new medium. It is clearer, with more clarity.” Another extra, DisneyView features two side panels from a contemporary Disney artist paired with a scene from the film in the middle. “It’s a great marriage of contemporary Disney artists and the nine old men and the wonderful things that were done originally. I loved this special extra. It was one of the features that I saw and was impressed with.” As the voice and model for Alice, Beaumont spent time on the set with the animators who used her movements for the animated character. “When we did the modeling in those days, you went on to one of the stages. We hardly had anything on the set, except the backdrop, the camera and some lights,” explains Beaumont. “You did the actions. But, the animators needed to really see how my movements were. The woodshop developed all kinds of interesting devices so that I could go

through the actions and the animators could draw the figure more realistically. There was a scene that showed how Alice was eating or drinking something and got large, then shrank.” One of the features on the Blu-ray disc shows viewers how Beaumont and the animators performed these tasks. “You can see how the live actions helped the animators draw more realistically. It’s a way to show how you get from live action to the finished product.” Also on the Blu-ray find Reflections on Alice Featurette, Operation Wonderland, Walt Disney Color TV Introduction, reference footage, an interactive game and much more!

Kathryn Beaumont Remi‘Sanctum’ nisces About Alice and The 3-D action-thriller ‘Sanctum’ folWalt By Randy Montgomery Kathryn Beaumont inducted as a “Disney Legend” in 1998 and at age eleven was the voice and model for Alice in Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. Beaumont was also the voice of Wendy in Peter Pan. Reminiscing about being involved in Alice in Wonderland, which is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year, Beaumont says, “I loved every minute of it. I thought, ‘how special, that I have this opportunity.’” A highlight was working with the man himself, “I felt very comfortable with Walt Disney. It was such a wonderful experience meeting him for the first time. He was a very easy person to get to know. He was there. He was going to the cafeteria with everybody. He would stand in line and sit with people. We were able to talk with him. He would come down sometimes just to see what was happening on set.” Sixty years later and Alice in Wonderland continues to entertain. The reason, according to Beaumont, “You had all of these really talented animators. You had Walt who was so forward looking, talented himself and a great storyteller. They worked together as a team. They were great animators and artists. They had interesting characters. There was something for everybody. Adults would catch nuances that only an adult would appreciate; yet children appreciated

Do you think healthy foods are boring and taste bland? Do you think that only unhealthy foods can make your mouth water? Do you equate dieting with deprivation? When was the last time you played with your food? Has it been more than a few months? If you answered “yes” to any of the above, it’s time for New Fooditude! “It’s all about shifting people’s attitudes about food,” says Cathy Pisano of New Fooditude. She and her business partner, Karen Marco, aim to dispel common myths about what foods are (and are not) healthy for us. They want to show people that preparing and eating healthy food can be fun. It can even make your taste buds sing and dance! They’re on a mission to spread the word (and the fun) with as many people as possible. Eventually they want to take their business international. Both women have gone through the Holistic Nutrition Educator program at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) in Tempe, AZ. “I like to have fun, I enjoy sharing with others, and I come from a long line of party givers,” says Pisano who learned about the benefits of a primal diet, slowly changed her eating habits, and felt so much better that she wanted to share what she learned with others. “This is just too good to keep to myself!” says Pisano. Both women are enthusiastic about fresh, unrefined, whole foods, and a primal diet. They encourage their clients to buy as much locally and organically grown food as they can but they’re not extreme in their approach. “We meet people where their taste buds are, then encourage them to go at their own pace from there,” added Marco. Both women said that their “nourishing body, mind, and spirit” philosophy starts with food and keeps going. They encourage participants to get back into the kitchen, have fun, and play with their food. Their current offerings include

cooking classes, educational seminars, and workshops. Future plans include weekend and weeklong retreats and will include many other supportive activities. Saturday, January, 15, 2011, Pisano and Marco launched their first cooking class, “Breaking Fast: What to Eat in the Morning When You Go-Grain Free?” “It was better than I could have possibly imagined!” says Pisano. “The energy of the class seemed to flow like a river. When the guests arrived it felt like a social gathering, much like the white water rapids of a river.” Once the class started, people listened intently. “They seemed to savor and digest all of the information that was given,” said Marco. Students asked questions of their chef, who accommodated with elaborations on the topics at hand. “The river was moving yet calm. Then our chef transitioned into demo mode and the energy picked up again with chatting, more Q&A, and interactive cooking. The flow picked up,” said Pisano. When all of the dishes were prepared, Pisano and Marco set up a buffet. Their guests filled their plates and found a place outside at the table near the pool. “The meal was a delightful experience of new friends gathering around the table to break (gluten-free) bread and enjoy each other’s company. For me personally, I seemed to have stepped into my future by stepping back in time to recreate the meals I shared with my family as a child. The river reached its destination at the mouth and joined a greater force of energy I’ll call the ocean!” explained Pisano. “The responses ranged from pleasant surprise to total amazement and joy,” said Marco. The feedback they received convinced them that more people want to learn about the foods they eat. Pisano and Marco accomplished what they set out to do and they’re ready to do more. BEER! ARIZONA BEER WEEK We will continue our build up to Arizona Beer Week by looking at some of the special beers that will be available during the week. As we discussed last time, Arizona Beer Week will take place from February 19th to February 26th and the calendars are filling up quickly. The week starts off with the Arizona Brewers Guild’s premier event, the Strong

Beer Festival. This event will take place on Saturday the 19th at Steele Indian School Park from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. First off, Bell’s Brewing has sent in several special kegs for the week. Beers include Golden Rye, a wonderfully delicious Rye beer with a nice hoppy profile to it. Also on tap will be Harry McGill’s Spiced Stout. This is a big and bold stout with a strongly

spiced quality, featuring the flavors of maple, ginger and molasses. But wait, there’s more, Third Coast Old Ale, Raspberry Ale, Oatmeal Stout and Expedition Stout will all make appearances. Third Coast is a barley wine of superior quality, rating a perfect 100 at RateBeer.com. It is considered the brandy of beers. Of course Expedition Stout also garners a perfect score as well. This is their Imperial Stout that contains twice the malt and five times the hops of Kalamazoo Stout…one of the best Imperial Stouts on the market. Global Imports will be in town and Christy has pried loose a few very special kegs for our celebration of great beer. Ballast Point has also sent some really special products over from San Diego including Tongue Buckler Double Red, Dorado Double IPA (last time this product was in Arizona in bottles, it sold out in two days), and Barrel Aged Piper Down Scottish Ale, aged 5 months in two separate bourbon barrels of Heaven Hill & Old Fitzgerald. It was blended and cold aged an additional 6 months. We can also expect to see a couple of great beers at Strong Beer from Ballast Point. Big Eye IPA will make its first appearance in the state on draft; and Old Barmy will make debut in any form. Barmy is a special beer, described as a fruit beer (and it is, featuring apricots and honey) it weighs in at over 10% ABV, much bigger than your typical raspberry wheat. Expect to see these specialties at Boulders on Broadway Sunday afternoon, Whole Foods Chandler on Monday, Hungry Monk on Tuesday, Whole Foods Scottsdale on Wednesday and Chop N Wok on Thursday. Wrapping up the week on Friday, Ballast Point will be the feature brewery at Moto’s Hop Extravaganza. Look for Dorado Double and Tongue Buckler, along with the more frequently seen Sculpin, all on draft. Also flowing from the taps that evening will be Bell’s Hopslam, Moylan’s Hopsickle, Port Hop 15 and Redstone Mead’s Nectar of the Hops, a dry hopped version of their Traditional Mountain Honey Wine. This is one of four major events on Friday, and if you play your cards right, you may be able to hit all of them. Artisanal Imports is one of those that will only have a few events but all will be special. Look for Oak Aged La Trappe Quadrupel to be poured at Lost Leaf on Tuesday as part of

their La Trappe tasting. La Trappe is one of only seven Trappist breweries in the world and their beers are truly special. Having recently regained the right to sell their beers under the La Trappe label, the monks are excited about the opportunity to introduce Arizona to their outstanding ales. That alone would be enough, but on Wednesday, at Whole Foods Chandler, Sean Knoll will be presenting a seminar on blending Flemish Sours. We don’t know exactly what he is sending other than “blending barrels” so this one is on the don’t miss list as well. Finally, on Thursday night Sean will be out in the West Valley at Ground Control where he will present a portfolio tasting. Look for a couple of rare beers to make an appearance there as well. Left Hand Brewing will be sending in some Twin Sisters Double IPA kegs along with Wake Up Dead in a Barrel, their barrel aged Imperial Stout. Brendan will be in town all week so who knows where these special beers will show up. Check the Beer Week calendar for details. Briar from Lost Coast will also be in town for a couple of days and he has sent some of his Oak Aged Imperial Stout for

both the Strong Beer Fest as well as events at Sun Devil and Whole Foods Chandler. That nowhere near wraps up all of the specialty beers that will be in the state for Beer Week, but it is a good enough start. Speaking of specialty beers, you may have noticed that Whole Foods in Chandler will have a large number of these on tap. In addition, and unrelated to Beer Week events, we understand that they are also sitting on a small stash of ultra high end aged Belgian beers. For those of you who truly appreciate a cellared beer, and I know there are many of you, get on down there before they run out. They may not be on the shelf, so ask for them. Look for rarities from Fantome, La Rulles, De Dolle, Caracole, Guldenberg, Urthel and Ecaussines all aged from two to five years, and all drinking magnificently. If you ever wanted to start cellaring beer, this is a great opportunity to get a head start. They won’t last long, so check it out now. There will be plenty more Beer Week events going on. Last year Mesa’s rock scene got a makeover when the Nile Theater re-opened to the revamped Underground. The old theater’s basement is home to bands specializing in punk, hardcore and rock acts. Somehow, the Underground has managed to stay local enough to keep that hole-in-the wall rock feel but has the credentials to showcase bigger bands. If you’re new to the venue, expect an intimate feel and a small scale stage but with the venue capacity to hold over 200 people. One thing agreed on is the surprisingly good sound system, loud noise but no drowned out vocals. For their one year anniversary, 10 local bands will perform on 2 stages featuring The Technicolors, Hooves, Radio Drive-by and many more. Check out the site for the full list. Glendale Chocolate Affair Feb 4th - 6th

There are plenty of festivals that sound appealing; cultural, music, varying hobbies etc., but really none of them bring on the type of curiosity and attention that the rumor of a Chocolate Festival does. Feeding into one of our deadliest sins is the delicious event that none can resist, aside those few who “don’t like chocolate.” This event brings more to the table than creamy coco lusciousness, we are talking live music, writers, artists, and culinary experts who all seem to have one thing in common: the love of fine chocolate. This weekend long fair invites chocolatiers from national, regional and local levels, there will be 30 of them in fact. Take a shuttle bus from Murphy Park to Cerreta’s, Glendale’s own chocolatiers. A tour of the factory gives you a glimpse into the real Willy Wonka lifestyle. Back at the festival, enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride or take in a wine tasting. Saturday, the Plein Air contest will be held in which dozens of artists compete for prizes with the art done live outdoors. On top of that, First Saturdays will feature over 20 artists showcasing their work as well as live performances. Speaking of which, the music line up stands solid with bands such as Marmalade Skies, a 7-piece Beatles tribute band, Chuck E. Baby and the All-Star Band, a local party band that’s been rocking AZ since the 90’s, Urban Country, and Voodoo Swing among five others. Lastly, when all that sweet chocolaty sugar gets your mind going, you will have the ability to join in on some author workshops with topics ranging from “The Journey to Publication” to “Finding Time to Write No Matter What.” And of course no chocolate festival would be legit without the experimentation aspect of cooking with chocolate. The tiny desert town just north of Scottsdale is home to the nation’s largest Steelers bar, Harold’s Corral, which happens to share a dirt parking lot with The Buffalo Chip Saloon, one of the country’s largest Packers bars that was rated by PHOENIX magazine as one of the best places to watch a Packers game. The number of fans expected exceeds the Town’s population of 4,000.

Harold’s Corral co-owners Danny Piacquadio and Bill Vale and The Buffalo Chip owner Larry Wendt are working around the clock to prepare for the big day. In anticipation of 4,000 Steelers fans, Harold’s has ordered enough for 9,000 servings of beer and plans to serve 250 Primanti Brothers sandwiches, 1,200 homemade pierogies, and 3,600 chicken wings. The Buffalo Chip expects a

rowdy crowd of up to 2,000 Packers fans and will serve 4,000 pounds of barbecue, 600 cases of beer, and plenty of Johnsonville Bratwurst, Walleye, Lake Perch, and cheese curds. Piacquadio and Wendt have a fun rivalry bet: the owner of the losing team will wear the other team’s jersey for one week. Both restaurants have also issued a “Fans Kick Their Cans” challenge to bring canned foods and toiletries for a special collection at each restaurant to see which fans donate the most items to the Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center. Volunteers from the non-profit will weigh the donations after the game. The owner of the losing “Fans Kick Their Cans” challenge will fly the other team’s flag at his restaurant for one week. Pam DiPietro, the food bank’s executive director, said she is thrilled that the rival bars are working together to help the community, especially since the need for services has increased nearly 700 percent since 2007. “We always need monetary donations, but we’re also in dire need of toiletries, such as soaps, shampoos, laundry detergent, toilet paper, and other items that can’t be bought with food stamps,” DiPietro said. “We also need peanut butter and jelly, pasta sauce, juice, dried milk, canned pasta, and baby items, such as diapers, wipes and formula.” Harold’s Corral is located at 6895 E. Cave Creek Rd.; The Buffalo Chip is located at 6811 E. Cave Creek Rd. The Steelers/Packers game begins at 4 p.m., but fans will begin arriving to both bars at noon. Parking: There is limited free parking at both restaurants, with plenty of parking around Town and free shuttle service. EVERYTHING’S BIGGER IN TEXAS: SUPER BOWL INCLUDED The Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers will really know they’re in Texas when they reach their hotels and see the handmade saddles waiting for them, made especially to mark their visit. The two saddles -- an AFC one and another for the NFC -- will be just one of the Texas touches evident when the teams, fans and media arrive for the NFL championship game being played in the Dallas Cowboys’ new $1.3 billion home on Sunday. There also will be the annual World’s Original Indoor Rodeo, the twice daily cattle drives and a rental-car lot the size of Rhode Island. Well, not really, but it seems like it. The leading attribute in Texas? How about hospitality? From the beginning, the North Texas Super Bowl Host Committee emphasized a regional effort that envisioned more volunteers than previous host cities and key events spread across 30 miles separating Dallas and Fort Worth.

And don’t forget about Arlington, halfway in between. That’s where the game will be played at the home of “America’s Team,” regardless of what everyone heard when the Packers and Steelers whooped and hollered about “going to Dallas!” The site also has another Texas pastime covered: driving. Arlington remains the largest city in the country without mass transportation, and the Dallas area’s light rail still hasn’t quite made it out to the area’s massive airport. Instead, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has a huge car-rental center. The Super Bowl effort has been described as the most cooperative in the region since the airport that covers 30 square miles went up nearly 40 years ago, and organizers are perfectly comfortable with the idea that visitors will land, pick up their rental and drive who knows how many miles a day to find the action. Maybe it’s downtown Dallas, where the NFL Experience and media center aren’t far from the site of JFK’s assassination and a slew of Super Bowl parties. Maybe it’s downtown Fort Worth, where Sundance Square sits under a huge longhorn cattle

Just west of downtown Fort Worth, rodeo cowboys will ride bulls and young boys and girls will show sheep, goats and other livestock. A few miles north, cowboys on horseback will lead real-life longhorns on a cattle drive down Exchange Street twice per day in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Custom-order cowboy boots, hats, belts and buckles will be plentiful. “For people that haven’t experienced Texas, I think it leaves a lot to the imagination,” said Shanna Weaver, spokeswoman for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. “I think it makes them curious and anxious to come see what Texas is all about.”
