A Weekend
to remember Written by: Karen Lincoln
Starting
the journey It was with hopeful anticipation that I and group of seasoned, successful breeders from all over the United States converged on San Antonio, Texas, to spend two days seeing some of the best Arabian bloodstock available for anyone to experience. We were not disappointed. Our group of breeders came from Washington, Utah, Colorado, Alabama, Georgia and Arizona. Some have been breeding for as long as 40 years, and some as short as 1 year. Regardless of the varying levels of breeding experience, all 14 of us shared one thing: our love and appreciation for the beauty, intelligence and substance the Arabian represents. We never wanted for enthusiastic conversation about what it takes to breed a great horse.

Our first stop would be an afternoon at Michael Byatt Arabians in New Ulm, Texas, for lunch with Mr. Byatt and his staff, who then shared with us some absolutely gorgeous, world-class horses. Michael’s iconic influence is global, and I have had him on my personal wish list of people to meet for quite some time. His inspired vision and love for what he is creating is obvious the minute you meet him. The following evening we joined Mario Zerlotti, of Zerlotti Reproduction Equine services in Pleasanton, Texas, who shared a spectacular foal crop, a tour of their high tech reproduction facilities and a wonderful dinner complete with live music and our full group participation, which had us all singing until 2 a.m.

Doug Leadley of Orrion Farms in Ellensburg Washington organized our weekend to remember He has serendipitously connected himself to everyone in our group. A third generation horseman, Doug’s grandfather and father came from the Saddlebred world, so it was in perfect succession that Doug would fall into the horse world at a young age. He believes that in our breed, we have two lifelines to create an economy, the amateurs and the breeders, and we can’t have one without the other. With a lifetime of knowledge and 40 years of breeding to draw from, Doug has provided guidance to breeders at every level to help them improve their breeding programs. Doug says, “Just because a horse is a champion, doesn’t mean they can duplicate their strong traits. When they can duplicate themselves, you have a great breeding horse. That is what makes things predictable for breeders and ultimately improves their breeding programs. By being aware of both good and bad traits, breeders can predict what certain crosses will produce.”

OFW MAGIC WAN
One of Doug’s most recent breeding successes, which he celebrated with Harold and Dolly Orr of Orrion Farms, is the breeding of OFW Magic Wan, the 2010 Futurity Champion Stallion (Marwan Al Shaqab x Magna Prelude).
A Weekend to Remember
“Many breeders in our group own a Magic Wan progeny or have bred to Magic Wan.” Magic Wan is managed at Zerlotti Equine Reproduction, LTD, in Pleasanton, Texas. Many breeders in our group own a Magic Wan progeny or have bred to Magic Wan, and they have seen first-hand how he can improve a mare with his great body, deep shoulder and great shaped neck, but almost everyone loves the eyes he puts on their babies. Orrion Farms has produced three US National contenders for this year’s championship, so it’s pretty safe to say that Magic Wan is duplicating his DNA like every champion should. We can look forward to seeing OFW Sassy Wan in the yearling Fillies, as well as OFW Rhianna in the yearling fillies, and OFW Wan and Only in the yearling colts. In addition, Don Malstrom, who was also part of our group, is responsible for showing three Magic Wan yearlings to regional championships. Don’s horse, OFW First Wan, was Magic Wan’s first foal born and also his first foal to win a Regional Sweepstakes class at Region 8. Don also had a reserve champion yearling colt and reserve champion yearling filly. Not bad for Magic Wan’s first Foal Crop.

“pretty never goes out of style” Charles Mosley
A Weekend to Remember
Southwind Arabians Another breeder, Charles and Leanne Mosley own Southwind Arabians in Selma, Alabama, and have been breeding for 20 years. In the beginning, Charles admits he wanted to fill his pastures with pretty horses, but he didn’t know quality like he does today. Then he met Doug and asked for his advice, and Doug told him to sell everything and start over. So Charles did exactly that. He sold everything, but he admits the venture cost him time and money. Today, he and Leanne have rebuilt their herd with quality mares, or as Leanne says, “we wanted mare power so we just focused on the best mares we could get.” Then, they selected great stallions to improve their mares, like Marwan, Magic Wan and Davinci. Apparently, this decision worked. Since then, they have successfully bred a US Nationals Top Ten Futurity Filly, SW Jasmine, who produced SW Da Vidica, a two-year old 2012 Scottsdale Champion Filly (April 15-July). Leanne says, “I respect anyone who can breed multiple champions, because you can get lucky one time, but to do it consistently year after year is very difficult.” The couple is very excited about their current Magic Wan colt, and Charles swears it’s one of Magic Wans best colts yet. Charles has a great saying that summarizes why most of us love our Arabians, to quote Charles, “pretty never goes out of style.”

A Weekend to Remember
Mickey Womble of Belvedere Farms Mickey Womble of Belvedere Farms in Cedartown, Georgia, has been breeding for 18 years. Womble will tell you that Belvedere means, “A beautiful place,” a fitting name for his Georgia farm. That beauty was threatened in 2002, however, when an unfortunate barn fire burned his barn to the ground. At that time he had 39 horses, and all but two escaped. The event caused him to sell everything but a few riding horses, and it wasn’t until his daughter Sarah Beth wanted to start showing horses that Mickey got back into the sport. He rebuilt his state-of-the-art facility and started focusing on his breeding horses. He likes long shapely necks, pretty faces, laid-back shoulders, short backs, athletic and balanced so they can come from behind. A few years ago, Doug called Mickey and about a colt he had found, and Mickey informed Doug that he had no interest in owning a colt. Doug replied, “You will with this one.” Mickey bought the colt. The Colt was Apalo (Justify x Gloria Apal), a 2008 Chestnut Stallion, 2010 Las Vegas World Cup Reserve Champion 2 year-old Colt, 2010 Region 6 Champion Stallion 2010 Canadian National Top Ten 2 yearold Colt, 2012 Scottsdale International Arabian Breeders Classic 3-4 Year Old Stallion Champion and 2012 Scottsdale International Arabian Breeders Classic Senior Stallions Champion. After Scottsdale this year, Jack and Elizabeth Milam purchased Apalo and showed him to a 2012 United States Reserve National Championship. With that show history, I would say, Doug has a pretty good eye. Mickey also said that Sarah Beth’s five championships at this year’s Youth Nationals made this year special. She is a very talented rider, and her accomplishments at Youth Nationals speak for themselves. Mickey says, “People can say they get into the Arabian Horses for the investment or that it’s a good tax write off. I don’t buy that. If you’re not having fun with it, you’re missing the point.” HORSE REFLECTION | 23
MARWAN
AL SHAQAB
So, what does it take to produce world class horses? Michael Byatt knows, and he has multiple generations to show what a great duplicating stallion can do. Before he showed us what we had come to his facility to see, he treated our group to a lovely lunch with a picturesque view in the middle of his gorgeous ranch and personally took time to get us settled and connect with each of us. Then in a very grounded fashion, he warmly shared his vision with a full sensory experience of see, touch, feel and smell and allowed us time to really absorb the quality of the horses we were seeing.
HORSE REFLECTION | 24
GAZAL AL SHAQAB
And we did see some amazing horses. Gazal Al Shaqab (Anaza El Farid x Kajora) was among them. His reputation precedes him. He is obviously a stallion that can duplicate his champion DNA. He has great presence, attitude and carriage. We were wowed as Gazal gave us a show, calling his mares as if he were still a young stallion. When he settled down, we actually were able stand next to him, to pet him and just take him all in. Michael turned him out across from our presentation paddock so he could keep an eye on things, and the champion horse didn’t miss a beat. He has an incredible pedigree and an outstanding show record. The 1998 Egyptian Event Supreme Champion, 2005 U.S. Reserve National Champion Senior Stallion and Scottsdale Reserve Champion Stallion, Gazal Al Shaqab has made his mark with his pedigree and as an individual. But one of his greatest gifts to the world was his International Champion son, *Marwan Al Shaqab.
Michael then pulled three incredibly gorgeous mares to show us, who have all won National Championships. As we enjoyed their demonstration, Michael educated us on pedigree, confirmation and foundational breeding principles. He not only looks for the conformational correctness, but he also wants an intelligent eye. He wants to know how the horse reacts and notices what is around him. The more aware and alert this horse is, the better. A horse with that intelligence and presence coupled with great confirmation and a natural neck and tail carriage will be great in the show ring because he has those traits naturally. Every horse Michael showed us was exceptional—no question— and it is apparent that they were happy. They were content, knew their jobs, had great dispositions and showed very pleasing attitudes. We met the adorable resident Wallaby before strolling in the broodmare pastures, where they mares nuzzled for carrots and special attention. I gave extra care to Marwan’s Mom, Little Liza Fame VF. She is a legend in her own time, and I paid my respects. There were so many great mares to be grateful for, and all of them were out there enjoying the life they deserve. There is a famous saying, “We don’t remember days, we remember moments.” I will forever remember the moment when Marwan Al Shaqab came around the corner and stood before us like royalty, commanding our attention. He literally brought tears to my eyes. I am not kidding. Your soul just knows when it’s witnessing perfection. He embodies everything we expect our stallions to be, and he is truly special. In show business we call it the “it” factor. Or as Stephanie McMahon from our group recalls the first time she met him, “it’s spiritual.” Whatever you want to call it, there is a reason that he holds the decorated show record he does and more winning progeny than any other sire to date. The generational duplication from Gazal to Marwan Al Shaqab to Magic Wan and now Magic Wan’s offspring is all by design, and every breeder can appreciate that because it’s what they hope to create themselves at some level.
It’s life that horses deserve So many great mares to be grateful for being out there enjoying the life they deserve.
MARWAN AL SHAQAB
A Stallion of Excellence
A Weekend to Remember
“Our group learned the history of champion pedigrees and met the world-class individuals themselves.” It’s obvious from Michael’s success, which spans over many years and multiple continents, that he will continue to paint his destiny in the world of the Arabian horse. But he is not just a competitor; he is a horseman, who openly shares his love for the Arabian. Teaching and educating all levels of breeders comes effortlessly. Our group learned the history of champion pedigrees and met the world-class individuals themselves. But what was truly exceptional was seeing four generations of breeding horses represented there on the farm. Michael’s gift for breeding generational champions is by design. Like any artist who creates, every piece improves on the next. Or, in this case, every generation of breeding improved the bloodlines, demonstrated with refinement of certain traits within the breeding combination and never compromising the breed. The next afternoon we departed to Zerlotti Equine Management services to meet Mario and see his facility. He too is a man with a global vision. He is a leader in equine genetics and technology who has performed over 4,000 successful embryo transfers over the years and leads the industry with an 85% percent success rate in his embryo transfers. With 400 horses and 76 babies birthed on his ranch this year, this man has made an impact on the way we breed our Arabians that in no way compromises quality. So, it was no surprise to hear that he is opening a second reproduction facility in Saudi Arabia in the fall of this year. With his international breeding solutions, he is an expert in high demand, and although he is headquartered in Pleasanton, Texas, his work spans the globe. His work has touched the United States as well as Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and such Middle Eastern countries as Qatar, Ajman, Saudi Arabia and Dubai.

OFW
Magic Wan
A Weekend to Remember
After a nice happy hour welcome reception and a group picture to document our trip, we were in for a treat when Mario showed us this year’s foal crop. He brought out about 21 babies and mares to show, and the Magic Wan babies were a standout! Members of our group, Stephanie and Roger McMahon of Running Horse Ranch in Wenatchee, Washington, owned and bred the crowd favorite: a gorgeous Magic Wan filly out of a Mare, RHR Vallacontessa, which they bred and who came from a famous mare, Amety-B. They have been breeding for 14 years, and when I asked Stephanie how she has had so much success, she said, “you have to pay attention to the trends and what is in style, and certain things are more important than others.” Breeding champions seems to have come naturally for her. Amelia B was their first baby and their first National Champion. They have also bred Princess of Marwan, who was a US National Champion and The Reserve Champion Mare at the Salon De Cheval show in the same year. She says, “It’s fulfilling to be the breeder of the champion and not buyer of the champion.” I have no doubt that the RHR Vallacontessa x Magic Wan filly will be their next champion breeding success story.
A Weekend to Remember
After showing so many of the great Magic Wan babies, it was only fitting that Mario would present us with Magic Wan himself. Just like his daddy, he has that bigger than life presence of a king. Our newest breeders, Jill and George Litztey of Roy Washington, bought their first Magic Wan yearling filly, Magic Moment, at the Orrion Farm sale this last June. One month later, Doug showed her to a Region 5, Top Five Championship. Jill loves Magic Moment’s huge, round expressive eyes with her long lashes. She has that Magic Wan body and a great hook to her neck. Gary Kehl of Salt Lake City, Utah, has been breeding for 6 years, and after seeing the quality of horses on our trip, he decided he likes the Magic Wan babies so much that he purchased OFW Rhianna. She is a lovely filly bred by Dolly Orr, and we were able to see her at Micheal Byatt’s facility. After a day of thinking, he decided she would be an excellent addition to his breeding program, and he bought her. Congratulations, Gary! It was a remarkable two days, this was one trip that everyone in our group agreed we will never forget.

RIDE WITH MORE
TRUST AND LESS GADGETS
Any athlete, whether human or equine, can only move freely with a lack of restriction to his head and neck, which need mobility to absorb all the movement. Visualize the power and energy as the horse jumps into the canter strike off. The head and neck need to move forward to absorb this movement but if the rider has heavy hands the horse will only feel a restrictive tug in his mouth. For us to build the desire within the horse to step forwards with confidence, we need to build a relationship of trust. This is the true foundation, to ride with more trust and less gadgets! The head and neck of the horse are not naturally placed over his centre of balance so he will always need to compensate for any change in balance which will be happening constantly in any movement.

NATURAL BALANCE OF HORSE
The horse moves naturally demonstrating both balance and good posture
HORSE REFLECTION | 43
Encourage the spirit of the horse to shine through The true value of loose work is that we can see the horse moving in graceful balance and posture with no tack at all, we can begin to realize the connection we are looking for is ‘mind to mind’ and ‘breath to breath’. This is our learning ground to connect with the language of the horse and maintain the same language once in the saddle. We communicate through our core breathing, energy and balance. When the horse moves in collection, his haunches begin to lower as they become more loaded with his body weight. The neck of the horse extends up and away from the wither demonstrating a ‘proud’ lengthened and arched neck.

CORE
BREATHING THE FOUNDATION FOR POSTURE, BALANCE AND CO-ORDINATION
When we study the art of collection it is interesting to compare the similarities between ourselves and our horse. The power of corebreathing is not only the foundation for good posture, balance and co-ordination for the rider, but has the same impact on the horse. Both human and horse can become better supported by strengthening core muscles and deeper corebreathing will enhance this state. When the horse is tense his head and neck will be held high and tight which will impede the flow of movement through the spine. Injury and pain will be the consequence of a training programme which does not allow adequate time for the horse to learn to carry himself and his rider within a naturally balanced frame. It takes time and patience to build a foundation of good muscles and ligaments to sustain the equine athlete as he progresses through his training.

My love for the
ARABIAN STALLION Written by by Elayne Lorie
Close your eyes. Imagine an incredibly beautiful stallion, running effortlessly across the sparling white sand. His long mane, flowing like rain beside him. The stallions fine, velvet nostrils hungrily drinking in the wind, his huge black eyes on his future. His eyes are forever focused on the future. This is the Arabian stallion. From centuries of ancestors of stallions with their eyes focused on the future of the breed. This is what makes him. This is what drives him. This is what he lives for. From birth, the wobbly colt, barely able to stand and nurse, will grow each day until he is able to one day open his eyes wide enough to see a young mare across the pasture. In the blink of an eye, he is transformed into a young stallion. From here, his life will be forever changed. His purpose will be to procreate his line. He will continue to grow and mature and become more animated. All with the hope to one day reproduce. Only then will he achieve his purpose in life. The breed will continue.
The Arabian stallion is unique. To me, they have qualities most of the other breeds simply do not possess. They have a natural affinity for humans. They are comfortable with us. From their beginnings, we have valued them as a part of our lives. They have been ridden in warfare among tribes. They have been used to travel across vast deserts. They have even lived in the tents with the Bedouins as part of the very existence and life style. This was the humble beginning of the Arabian stallion. The Arabian stallion is considered family by many. Many live with one farm and family for a lifetime. Some have many families to appreciate them. Some have hundreds of foals and some have only a few. But with few foals or hundreds, they all have procreating natures. You can love them, admire them, and trust them. But they are stallions. This makes them unique. The intelligence of an Arabian stallion should never be underestimated.Their ability is only limited to what an owner or handler is willing to teach. Their versatility is unequalled in the equine world. The Arabian is the only breed that allows young riders and handlers to show stallions. This says a monumental amount about the trainability and disposition of the stallions of the breed. This trainability begins at birth with the colts.
HORSE REFLECTION | 54
My love for the
ARABIAN STALLION
The young colt can be easily taught to lead, go on the hot walker, swim, stand quietly, and with patience, will learn to do it all willingly. Consistency and routines are very beneficial in training the young colt to become a wellmannered stallion. Exercise plans are a very important part of the stallion’s life. In my personal opinion, I feel the choice of exercise or methods of performance should be determined by the discipline that is most natural for the stallion. Many owners or handlers make this decision for the stallion, but this decision should be in agreement with the stallion’s ability. I have been asked many times about the dispositions of Arabian stallions. My answer is usually the same. “Arabians are smart enough to be what you want”. Many times the curiosity of the arabian stallion is misunderstood. Mostly, they are playful and friendly. They are always looking for a pat or a treat, crave attention and love people. They can be taught anything an owner attempts to teach them. Teaching with love and kindness works well and rewards are happily appreciated. This investment into your Arabian is rewarded 100 times over.
HORSE REFLECTION | 55
My love for the
ARABIAN STALLION
Many people do not understand the Arabian horse. Their bright and sensitive natures and natural curiosity for people are sometimes misunderstood. The need for human interaction is as natural for an Arabian as the morning meal. Once you have been part of the life of an Arabian Stallion, nothing will ever seem the same. You will be captivated by their elegance and dynamic personalities. Their beauty is beyond compare and of course, they are responsible for the foals! The perfect, deer-like foals!. The pocket babies that endear you even more to this great breed. The Arabian stallion knows his place in this world. He knows it is his responsibility for the continuation of the very future of the breed. When you look at him with his natural grace and elegance or you hear him call to his mares, you obviously see that you are in the presence of royalty. Forever know he is from generations of stallions that have served Kings and Sheiks. Forever know you are graced to be a part of his life.

Breeding our Arabian horses is not just a passion, it is a difficult and well thought through process. We choose only the best quality black Arabian stallions for our mares. The stallions cannot just be beautiful; they must have the proper proportions in conformation and most importantly, the stallions must match with our mares. The result of this careful planning combines the best features from both, the mare and stallion, and we will be blessed with wonderful foals. This year, we have chosen again for our mares the producer of Champions, the black Arabian stallion NV Beau Bey (Bey Shah+ x Bint Miss Fire), and Borsalino Bey (Borsalino K x Beaus Dancer) son of Borsalino K, who has proven to be a top sire in both, Brazil and Europe.

My first ride was at the age of six, since that, horses took a big part of my life. At the age of 8-12, I was always spending my summer vacation with my brother in horse farms.

Story of passion Two years later, I bought my first horse, a Quarter-Arab mix. The horse breeder, Walter Dill, had a black Arabian stallion, El Aswad. That was the moment when I totally fell in love with these magnificent horses.

In 1980, I bought my first SLR camera, and that was the beginning of my second great passion, photography. And of course, it was no wonder that my first photo subjects were horses.

In 1996, I bought my first Arabian stallion. Motivated by the flair and beauty of the Arabian horse, I took more and more photos. The photos were getting better with time and so soon came the first commissioned work.

In 2007, I found my dream horse, the Arabian stallion, Peleng by Kubinec, out of Focus Gabriella. What was so interesting about this stallion is that the more attention he receives, the more he gets flourished. I trained him in the way of Pat Parelli and after few weeks, we had a very strong connection together, he was always enjoying playing together as friends, he was my once in a lifetime horse. Sadly, I lost him in In December 2010.

A lifetime beauty Since then, I limited myself to photography. Through years of my experience with Arabian horses, I understood how to capture and show each one at its best. Also, I’m a perfectionist. This means, that each image is processed into high-end quality.

The dream begins My Mum says that from the time I began to walk I was chasing every horse I could see. By the time I was eight years old I had my 1st pony, that was the beginning of MY DREAM. It took no time at all for me to fall in LOVE with the Arabian horse. I have never seen anything so beautiful in my life. It wasn’t long before at the young age of 11 I got my second horse, an Arabian mare. She was the one who taught me how to understand their language and become together as one.

Arabians are just a sweetheart and get into your soul like no other breed. I was looking for the perfect stallion to breed my mare to. After calling every Stallion owner in Germany, I had to put my dream to rest. At 14 years old, and due to health problems, I was forced to stop riding. Life continued on, and so did I with work, marriage , children and life. There was not many days that I didn’t think about that dream I had to leave behind.
the dream never died The Dream to Breed Arabian horses never died but, at the age of 37 the most wonderful woman in the world ( My Best Friend ) did ! Her death changed my life. We can all find 1000 reasons not to work on our own Dreams. We can all say “ I will do it tomorrow “ but that tomorrow never comes. Today is the 1st day of the rest of your life. My husband (the love of my life) said to me..... DO IT NOW, while you still can, while the DREAM is still alive.

My mare of choice It was all about where to start from. There are thousands of breeders in the world, and I am the little Petra from Germany. I became overwhelmed and excited at the same time, then I made my decision of starting to search for the right mare. That was OFW Hahnah. The beautiful mover with those big liquid eyes that spoke to me. I felt then that I am on my way, however, there was still another major choice for completing my dream of breeding; the right Stallion.

TRUSSARDI
I had been following a new young stallion, that was bred by the owners of Versace ROJO Arabians in America. A young colt named Trussardi. From Versace’s dam and Stival came TRUSSARDI.

TRUSSARDI was the perfect match for my Hahnah! His tremendous type and breathtaking beauty, this is him. In November 2011, I was the luckiest girl in the world to be invited to visit the USA to see this stallion that my mare was bred to. As I walked into the Rojo Arabians farm to meet John and Robert, my knees were shaking with excitement and pride.
AT THE HOME OF VERSACE AND TRUSSARDI, I stood there with this stallion in front of me, in total disbelief of what I was witnessing. He was so breathtaking. I will never be able to explain such great moment or even describe him the way he deserves. JUST PERFECT is simply the word! I went back home with Hannah waiting for her foaling date with extreme excitement. I was watching the foals being born from Trussardi via Internet and facebook and was thrilled with the beauty they had. In the middle of July, I started seeing his foals being born around the world. As the date got closer, I started dreaming, 3 nights in a row, I wake up from the dream with the name Angel getting repeated in my mind. On the morning of July 1st 2012, I was bringing horses in from the pasture and as we approached the stable they were all looking toward Hahnah’s stall! I looked and saw 2 itty bitty ears and the tip of a nose ! I couldn’t believe my eyes, I the most beautiful typey wonderful filly with 4 white legs. With tears running down my face, I took a deep breath and a long look and thought..... She is unbelievable...... DREAMS DO COME TRU....... My TRU ANGEL.
