Email a high quality scan of both sides to info@b-guided.co.za, drop a card off at our office (Woodstock Foundry), or pin it to the B-guided board at Deluxe Coffeeworks in Roodehek Road, Gardens, and tweet @bguidedSA to let us know – we’ll do the rest.

rock n roses
A lot has changed since Carl and Judd opened the doors to their humble little roastery in Church Street, the most symbolic of which was probably trading in the red petty cash box for a real till system. What hasn’t changed is the coffee. Three years later it is still as kick ass as ever, only now it can be found at three Deluxe outlets and just about anywhere else in the country. So what does it take to
build a coffee empire? Carl went to an agricultural high school and has an in-depth knowledge of roses. Judd was lead bass guitarist for rock band Songs of Phade and has a rather inconvenient habit of getting stuck in lifts. The unlikeliest of skill sets, perhaps, but combine them with passion and a disregard for rules, especially when it comes to coffee, and the results speak for themselves.

Grant
Michau Grant on Carl - If one of us is late or messes up Carl will shit on all of us! We all land up in trouble not just the dude who messed up. on Judd - We’ll be in the middle of a crazy service and Judd will decide to stand in the middle of everyone and strike up a fat chat with one of the customers. And Judd’s, well, not a small guy, so we have to just work
around him because, you know, he’s the boss and we can’t exactly tell him to move. Wentzel on Carl – He is never late. Even when he’s late. on Judd – When Judd finds a new album that he likes he will put it on repeat for about four hours in the shop and we all have to listen to it - even if we don’t like it.

Michau On Judd – We all speak Afrikaans except for Judd. Sometimes he will just make these random noises (in his Kiwi accent) to act like he’s speaking Afrikaans. On Carl – Big brother has got nothing on Carl. He knows what we are going to do before we’ve even done it.

The Pantry @ Dear Me 021 422 4920 165 Longmarket St | CBD
Sweet addiction: Pancetta & peanut butter cookie and shelves of edible delights
Unlike chocolate chip, the peanut butter cookie was no accident. It’s come a long way since George Washington Carver included a crushed peanut cookie recipe in his 1916 Research Bulletin and the traditional peanut butter cookie was introduced in the 1930s. Our favourite: the Pancetta & Peanut Butter cookie from The Pantry at Dear Me. Not too crisp, not too chewy and not
too sweet; just the right amount of buttery peanut flavour with a subtle, salty hit in every delicious bite. We bought our cookies from Frankie Fenner (because who doesn’t like a meat merchant that also sells coffee, bread, ice cream and cookies?), but our newest addiction is handmade with love in a beautifully-restored Heritage building in Longmarket Street. The Pantry at Dear Me stocks a wonderland of edible delights from jams, chutneys, relishes and pickles to roasted nuts and freshly baked breads, as well as decadently indulgent baked goods you’d gladly sell your grandma for!
bitches + bollocks
YARD, 6 Roodehek Rd | Gardens
In the most unassuming street, behind the unlikeliest façade, you’ll find YARD, home to not only Deluxe’s new roastery, but some of the best burgers and sandwiches in town. By day, the Bitches Tits serves up sandwiches like the world-renowned Philly Cheese Steak or the Meatball Hero; at R45 it is a lot cheaper than crossing the Atlantic. Mucky Mary’s Hubcap Breakfast is another favourite. After 5pm, the Dogs Bollocks serves burgers and wine. Only 50 are made each evening so get there early because they go fast. They’re that good. Visit for the food and to check out the whimsical tin can flower pots on all the lamp posts. We think they add a certain je ne sais quoi to Roodehek Road. YARD | facebook.com/YARDCT

There’s far more to hair salons than simply taming the locks. While we agree that the best part is probably the head massage, there are plenty of special touches that can elevate the experience from necessary to sublime. Cindy Taylor checked out the best places to catch up on gossip, enjoy great coffee, sip on a whisky, cool off with a cold one, escape from the hustle and bustle - and get your hair transformed from unruly to crowning glory.

(Hakutsuru) and Chinese beer (Tsintao). Ed and Clint say they’ll be getting more Asian beers soon, just in time for summer. The Vietnamese coffee is a worthy substitute if you’d prefer something non-alcoholic. Speaking of summer, there’s ice cream from the Creamery: cinnamon, star anise and pear, and jasmine tea. Also on the dessert menu are hand-
made truffles: crystallised ginger and five-spice praline. Ed and Clint believe in supporting the local economy and do so by using fresh, local ingredients wherever possible. South China is open for dinner from 6pm till late, Tuesday to Sunday, and for lunch from noon to 3pm, Wednesday to Friday. Summer menu now being served.

If not for a local beer commercial casting, we may never have experienced the sublime Asian street food at South China Dim Sum Bar. It is at the casting where Edmund Hung and Clinton Ho-Wing met, and it’s where they shared their love of food and their frustration at the lack of authentic Asian street food in the mother city. Capetonians got their first taste at the City Bowl
Market on Hope, but when Ed and Clint opened their restaurant in Long Street there was a collective cheer at being able to indulge any day of the week. Potstickers are the popular favourite, but we recommend trying everything on the menu, including the steamed buns, wontons and the many noodle dishes. (Who says we can’t have culinary goals?) Enjoy with some Japanese sake

HOW TO FOLD A WONTON
We got masters of dim sum, Clint and Ed, to give us the lowdown on folding a wonton. This particular method is called ‘the nurse’s cap.’ Wonton wrappers are available from most Asian supermarkets, particularly in Sea Point.
Dust your work surface with flour. Put one heaped teaspoon of your filling in the centre of the wonton wrapper.
1
Wet the inner edges of the wrapper with beaten egg.
2
Fold the wrapper the bottom 4 Wet in half to make a left corner with triangle. egg and fold over the apex should sit in the centre of the opposite side.
3
Wet the bottom right corner of the wrapper and fold over. Your wonton should look like a nurse’s cap.
5
Put into boiling water for about 4-5 minutes till it floats to the top. Add a dash of sesame oil and soya.

truckin’ gourmet
Food truck culture, huge in the US, is catching on in the mother City. Three of our favourites:
Limoncello Luca Castiglione’s authentic Italian food. We loved the Yellowtail Burger on homemade focaccia (they make their own bread every day) with rocket, tomato and marinated baby marrow. At Oudekraal on Wednesday, the Biscuit Mill on Saturday. Check Twitter for other locations. @CTFoodTrucks
The Soft Machine The team at Soft Machine says, “Soft serve doesn’t have to be the second-rate trailer park cousin of gelato.” We agree. All-natural, divine and creamy soft serve in really creative flavours, like Leipoldt’s Milktart with cinnamon spice snaps, and Honeybush Tea, also with snaps. At Oudekraal on Wednesday and Old Biscuit Mill on Saturday. Check Twitter for other locations. @thesoftmachine1 Durban’s Finest Curry This bright yellow truck serves up phenomenal veggie, chicken or lamb curry served with rice, in a roti or as a chow. Mince, chicken, butternut or potato samosas are also available. At Oudekraal on Wednesday, City Bowl Market on Saturday. Check Twitter for other locations. @durbfinestcurry Lady Bonin’s Tea Parlour Purveyor of magical infusions and tasty curiosities, Jessica Bonin and her refurbished 1975 Jurgens caravan have singlehandedly revolutionised tea drinking in Cape Town. Enjoy teas from around the world while relaxing on comfy cushions on a Persian carpet at markets and events around the Western Cape. At Neighbourgoodsmarket on Saturdays. Monique du Preez, curator at Salon91 since October 2008, shares her thoughts on art, inspiration and the best places to eat and play in the City.
Inspiration Raw creativity, passion, bravery, aesthetics, individuality, nature, architecture, fashion, colour, music, literature, design, film, solitude, geometry, form, travel… The list goes on. Chantal Louw and Thessa Bos shared a deep desire to make local art and design accessible and affordable. Lack of capital and unfriendly banks did not deter this dynamic duo and their solution was as creative as the designs they stock: Cape Town’s very first pop up shop. The success of the first pop up at City Hall, as part of Spier Contemporary 2010, led to one in Green Point during the 2010 World Cup, with the V&A following soon after. Their
extensive experience in the art world complemented with serious business savvy saw Chantal and Thessa saving for their dream while building an extensive and loyal client base. In June 2011 The Fringe Arts permanent design collective opened on Kloof - and a second permanent outlet at the V&A more recently where art, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and the best of South African creativity is snapped up by locals and visitors alike.
