art of business “The biggest waste of space is the unused side of a business card.” ~ John Lloyd | business strategist | author | www.brandstorm.co.za
The second in a series of Cape Town’s business card creativity
Have a business card you think we should feature? Email a high quality scan of both sides to info@b-guided.co.za, drop a card off at our office (Woodstock Foundry), or pin it to the B-guided board at Deluxe Coffeeworks in Roodehek Road, Gardens, and tweet @bguidedSA to let us know – we’ll do the rest.

the cure
Two essential ingredients required to craft quality products are time and care. Richard Bosman utilises both in his superb cured meats.
This is how it usually goes: farmers put pigs, say six of them, in a small space in order to utilize his space efficiently. But the pigs don’t have a lot of space to move around so they’re given growth hormones. Their proximity means that if one picks up a disease the rest of them will, so they are given anti-biotics, even if they are ‘healthy.’ They don’t indulge in greeny goodness and as far as animals go, they are miserable. Richard Bosman accepts none of the above. The pigs from which his delicious charcuterie and
to the meat. Instead, he relies on the quality of the raw material and lets time do the rest. It takes anywhere between 2 and 12 months before his range of Italian and Spanish style cured meats are ready and just like the pigs, there’s nothing unnatural about the process. You have to taste it to believe it. For a list of stockists visit www.richardbosman.me

But happy and healthy pigs are just one feature of what makes Richard’s produce so damned good. The other ingredient, and perhaps the most important, is time. prego prego Photo by Inge Prins, www.ingeprins.com
Yes, there is more authentic cuisine out there, but for many South Africans, Portuguese means one thing: prego. Six of the best...
&Union 110 Bree St | Cape Town The ‘Be Seen’ prego. Comes with a side order of tasty potato chips, hipsters and cool music. Enjoy it with a smokin’ hot redhead named Berne.
Shesha Prego Bar 142 Buitengracht St | Cape Town The ‘Mozambican’ prego. The delicious new prego in town, boasting owner Byron’s family recipe that travelled from Portugal to Moz during WWII.
Diaz Tavern 15 Caledon St | Cape Town The ‘Prego with the roll on the side’ prego. Comes with a Portuguese version of John Cleese (owner) and live music on Fridays.
Merchants Café 33 Long St | Cape Town The ‘Pretty Boy’ prego. Clean cut and well behaved. Comes with caramelised onions, salsa and chips. Best enjoyed with Devil Peak’s Silvertree.
Vasco’s 3 Alfred St | Green Point The ‘Portuguese Embassy’ prego. Comes with a grungy bar vibe and waitresses who have been there since Vasco’s opened way back in 1972.
Chippies 323 Main Rd | Observatory The ‘Old School’ prego. Just the way it should be. ‘Nuff said. Does wonders for a hangover. Best with anything that is ice cold.

Jason Bakery | 185 Bree Street, CBD | 021 424 5644 www.jasonbakery.com
Not everyone grows up to follow a childhood dream. Jason Lilley pursued an entirely different passion, for which we thank him.
Jason Lilley first wooed Cape Town with his buns, breads and lip-smacking bakes in 2007, operating out of the hatch of what was known as Jardine Bakery. Four years later he
took over the reins and the much-loved Jason Bakery was born. But this is something you already know. Although it is hard to imagine Jason as anything other than a hardcore,
tattooed biker, there’s much more to this selftaught baker than meets the pie. As a young’un his dream was to become a zoologist or game ranger and as a teenager he was
an avid bird watcher - the feathered type, that is. He even completed a bird identification course to ensure that he was prepared for family holidays. You should also know that he is, in fact, a Vaalie, had a bull terrier named Gambit and used to be a badass badminton player. His oldest friend is Henry, his starter culture, who has been by his side since 2006. Henry accompanied Jason when he moved to Cape Town from Knysna but fell violently ill in the city after living his whole life in the country. Henry was nursed back to health and has since been a pivotal ingredient in Jason’s admirable success – there is a little piece of Henry in every delicious loaf that Jason bakes.
urban picnics ... and why getting up early on a Saturday suddenly seems like a good idea. Start your weekend with a picnic. Jason Bakery’s Urban Picnic Hampers are filled with delicious gourmet goodies; perfect for enjoying with the best
G&Ts in town, a special Grey Goose punch or even your favourite craft brew, bubbly or wine. And if that’s not exciting enough, the Hatch reopened in November. No longer are Jason’s famous croissants limited to weekdays. Pop in for a leisurely Saturday morning of old favourites as well as a few surprises exclusive to the Hatch.

Side Street Studios is home to some of the city’s best up and coming and established creative talent. We feature two of our favourites. Kraftisan www.kraftisan.co.za Locally produced, functional, visually appealing products at a price that everyday folk can enjoy – this is Kraftisan in a nutshell. Lucas Adams, the Cape Town born and bred founder of Kraftisan, says he is inspired by the ‘uber minimalism of Scandinavian design’ and has a strong aversion to clutter and excessive detail. Lucas believes in creating products that are true to form and show how they have been put together. When he’s not krafting he’s out taking photos, drinking coffee, running up Lion’s Head (he is a nature fundi, he says) or dabbling in painting – a passion he inherited from his Grandfather.
Bibliophilia 1 Side Street Studios 021 447 1225 Xavier Nagel’s boutique book store, Bibliophilia, is the place to go if you’re looking for new and used graphic design, art, street art, illustration, photography, cult and quirky books, which share space with local documentaries and music, Studio Hung Tees and even a small selection of children’s books for the young and not-so young alike. It took two years for his idea to become a reality, says Jamie Litte, but before even the idea, events were set in motion that would play a role in its culmination. Jamie and wife Kate ditched corporate life in London, where he worked as a lawyer, to embark on a
journey travelling through Africa. It was while doing volunteer work in Kenya that African art, and its iconic uniqueness, first caught Jamie’s attention. After their African adventure ended about three years ago, Jamie and Kate settled in Cape Town. A keen cyclist and long-
time bicycle lover, Jamie would play around with repairs and renovations to his own bike. Inspired by the growing bike culture in Cape Town, the cycling intelligentsia of San Francisco, New York, Copenhagen, Berlin and Amsterdam and with the firm belief that people have a per-

sonal connection with their bikes, saying that, “your bike identifies a part of who you are”, Jamie came up with the concept of using bicycles as a canvas to showcase the beauty of African Art. Enter Ubuntu Bikes. Ubuntu’s team of talented local artists and crafters create unique hand painted bikes and bike accessories. Jamie often picks out bikes that others would deem beyond repair and gives them new life. You can also send in your own bike to be transformed into a one-of-a-kind work of art. And the name? Every South African understands the term Ubuntu. At least, they should. Ubuntu is about the collective where everyone benefits and Ubuntu Bikes is doing just that. Artists and crafters receive proper compensation for their work and 20% of profits go to the Ubuntu Trust, which supports and promotes education and skills and career development amongst disadvantaged groups.

diomonde ON THE SOlES Of HIS SHOES
When you go to Diomande, nestled away downstairs at the African Market on Long Street, you aren’t going there to simply pick out a pair of shoes. Oh no, no, no. Well, you are most welcome to do so but that would be like going to the Fat Duck and asking for a takeaway. When you go to this incredibly talented man for a pair of shoes it
is an experience. He starts by making a footprint that he will work from, because no two feet are the same. You choose your leather, you discuss what you want and you take your time, even getting to know him a little better. The result: the softest, handcrafted leather shoes that will last you a lifetime. For something like that, there is no rush.

the art of life Q&A with Doreen Southwood
Cape Town and Jo’burg fashionistas know and love her stylish boutique, MeMeMe, but Doreen Southwood is also an award-winning sculptor and artist. Doreen shares her thoughts on art, inspiration and life. On her process I find that everything I make originates from a strong emotion. I always try to answer a question in object form. Playing with opposite ele-
ments in one work or idea is important to me. On inspiration Positive people who love me! Hahaha. Coming up My main focus right now is a Fashion show in February 2013 at the Design Indaba, as well as completing a sculpture commission for the new year. On life in Cape Town I love the people and sense
of community that has developed over many years of having a business in town. Eating out After many years I am still in love with Birds Café and of course my daily coffee from Deluxe; all Church street favorites around MeMeMe. At play I love the fact that Cape Town has the mountain; nothing better than my daily walks with the dogs in nature and spectacular views. Favourite international city? Currently Berlin looking forward to spending some time there next year.

There’s a 3900-year-old Sumerian poem that honours Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing. We have yet to see any local craft beer lovers pen a sonnet of their own, because, as they will tell you, the poetry is already inside the bottle. A crafty summer selection. Devil’s Peak Silver Tree Saison Citrusy and spicy flavors supported by soft malt character, low alcohol presence and tart sourness. Dry finish.
1
Devil’s Peak Woodhead Amber Ale Moderate hop flavour with a citrusy quality; initial malty sweetness is followed by a caramel flavour.
2
Boston Breweries Johnny Gold Weiss Refreshing golden lager that is slightly sweet and fruity, with a full body. Very lightly hopped leaving almost no bitterness.

3
Brewers and Union Der Graf von Bavaria Craft brewed Bavarian wheat beer, but with the alcohol removed via a patented vacuum process. 0.4% ABV and refreshingly surprising.
4
Brewers and Union Unfiltered Dark Lager Rich and complex. Rentle, dry finish with lingering bitter chocolate notes. Drinkable and refreshing.
5
Citizen Alliance American Amber Ale Light, easy-drinking beer; initial bitterness is followed by subtle caramel tones that aren’t too sweet; a subtle dry finish.

Darling Brew Native Ale Assertive rusty brown ale with plenty spicey hopping, leaves your mouth filled with a range of flavours.

Triggerfish Sweetlips Blond Ale Light, dry and refreshing with some sweet biscuit malt and subtle fruit flavor. Perfect on hot summer days and balmy summer nights.

pieces of skim
What happens when four South African artists use the words potjiekos, slap tjips, kokis and biscuit as inspiration.
Not only does design studio Piece Industries merge extreme, freestyle sport with art, design, film and photography to create proudly South African products, they live up to their slogan – Be the Change – and support environmental and marine awareness programs. Skim boarding can be pretty tricky and intimidating, so Piece has designed an entry level board for coastal and flat land skimming. Using uniquely South African words like Potjiekos, Slap Tjips (chips), Biscuit and Koki as inspiration, artists Kronk, Sharon B Designs, Colin Thomas and DD Wolff have created art you can play with. Find all the details, where to buy them, and even a step-by-step on how to skim board at their website.

it’s a house
It’s a House | 20 Jarvis Street, De Waterkant | 021 418 2411 | www.itsahouse.co.za
It’s a House nearly didn’t happen. While Scotty Morris imagined an interactive space where creatives could come together in collaboration, he was also due to move to Hong Kong for a modelling contract. As it so often does with good ideas, the nuts and bolts of his vision started falling into place, Scotty cancelled his move and It’s a House opened on 1 December. The house itself is made
up of a central area with a bar and café, work spaces, and offices that can be rented on a month-tomonth basis, which include free internet and a meal. There’s also a meeting room and music studio. It’s a House is also an exhibition and retail space. Clothing and accessories by local designers share space with those of top international brands, and up and coming artists and designers show their work
alongside more established names. A wonderful concept because, let’s face it, sometimes it’s not a lack of talent that stands between obscurity and being well known. Events, too, play a big part in bringing people together - to jol, connect and inspire. Scotty and partners Floyd Lavine, Dave Dix and Dean Barnes have created an awesome space - a home for creatives - and Cape Town is all the richer for it.
