As Victoria’s Secret unveils two Fantasy Bras, B Mag takes a look back at the history of the world’s most expensive lingerie.

1996

The Million-Dollar Miracle Bra Model: Claudia Schiffer Price:

1997

$1million (£624,907.49)

$3million (£1,874,745.82)

The first ever Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra never made it down the catwalk but instead featured on the front cover of the brand’s Christmas catalogue. The bra featured over 100-carats of diamonds and a variety of other semi-precious gemstones.

The subtlest design in Fantasy Bra history still came with an impressive price tag thanks to the quality of the precious stones that were used to decorate it. The bra featured 93 gemstones, nearly 100 diamonds around the trim, and a 42-carat diamond at its centre.

1999

The Red Hot Fantasy Bra and Panties

The Millennium Bra Model: Heidi Klum Price:

$10million (£6,249,132.75) Victoria’s Secret were determined to ring in the new millennium with a bang and created this ornate design in celebration of the year 2000. The bra featured 2,000 diamonds set in platinum, as well as several sapphires. BMAG 14

2000

Model: Gisele Bündchen Price:

In honour of this year’s show, which will mark a milestone in the history of the Fantasy Bra with not one, but two of the designs being modelled on the catwalk by models Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio. The first Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra was designed in 1996 and modelled by Claudia Schiffer on the cover of the brand’s Christmas catalogue, however it was never used in the catwalk show, reportedly because of the incredible security risk involved in showcasing such a valuable item. Ironically, the $1million (£624,907.49) is the cheapest Fantasy Bra ever to have been designed by the brand and pales in comparison to some of the more recent lingerie sets featured in recent years.

The Diamond Dream Bra Model: Tyra Banks Price:

The Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bras are known as being some of the most show stopping lingerie designs in history and the ornate lingerie designs have served as the glittering finale of almost every one of the brand’s hotly-anticipated fashion shows since 2001.

1998

The Dream Angel Fantasy Bra Model: Daniela Pestova Price:

$5million (£3,124,566.37)

The floral design featured 77-carats of marquise rubies, and 330-carats of diamonds, which were set in platinum.

Although Victoria’s Secret continued to design a new Fantasy Bra each year following the success of its original 1996 design, it wasn’t until 2001 that the concept was included in the brand’s annual catwalk show. Model Heidi Klum, who has had the honour of modelling the Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra on three occasions, was the first Angel to wear one of the designs on the catwalk. The most expensive Fantasy Bra design was valued at $15million and holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive lingerie ever created. It was modelled by Gisele Bündchen in 2000 and was made of red satin decorated with more than 300-carats of Thai rubies.

2001

The Heavenly Star Bra Model: Heidi Klum Price:

$15million, the ‘most expensive lingerie in the world’ (£9,373,060.62)

$12.5million (£7,810,883.85)

This extravagant design holds the World Record for the most expensive lingerie design ever made. It was made of red satin and featured of over 1,300 stones including 300-carats of Thai rubies.

One of the more expensive Fantasy Bras designed by the brand, this lingerie set was decorated with a staggering 1,200 Sri Lankan pink sapphires and a 90-carat emerald cut diamond.

2002

The Star of Victoria Fantasy Bra Model: Karolina Kurkova Price:

$10million (£6,249,132.75)

This embellished floral design was studded with 1,150 ruby roses and 1,600 emerald leaves.

2005

2004

2003

The Very Sexy Fantasy Bra Model: Heidi Klum Price:

$11million (£6,873,764.66) This colourful lingerie set boasted a 70-carat diamond pendant, the second largest in the world.

The Heavenly ‘70’ Fantasy Bra Model: Tyra Banks Price:

$10million (£6,249,132.75)

Just like the previous year’s design, Tyra’s second Fantasy Bra featured a 70-carat pear-shaped diamond in the middle. It was reported that over 275 hours of labour went into the bra.

The Sexy Splendour Fantasy Bra Model: Gisele Bündchen Price:

$12.5million (£7,810,883.85)

While the price tag for this bra didn’t quite match up to the $15million design previously worn by Gisele, it is still one of the most expensive designs ever made by the brand. It featured 2,900 pave set diamonds, 22 ruby gemstones, and a 101-carat diamond set in 18-karat white gold.

2006

The Hearts On Fire Diamond Fantasy Bra Model: Karolina Kurkova Price:

$6.5million (£4,061,770.03)

Karolina’s second Fantasy Bra was just as dazzling as her first. The silver design was decorated with 2,000 diamonds and a 10-carat diamond brooch centrepiece.

2010

The Bombshell Fantasy Bra

2007

The Holiday Fantasy Bra Set Model: Selita Ebanks Price:

$4.5million (£2,811,953.67)

The 2007 Fantasy Bra was designed by jewellery brand Mouawad, the same company responsible for this year’s designs. The festive design featured diamonds, rubies, emeralds and yellow sapphires.

2008

The Black Diamond Fantasy Miracle Bra Model: Adriana Lima Price:

$5million (£3,124,566.37)

Adriana Lima’s first Fantasy Bra was based around a slightly darker design and was comprised of 3,575 black diamonds, 117 round diamonds and 34 rubies.

2009

Model: Adriana Lima Price:

Model: Marisa Miller Price:

Adriana closed the catwalk show for the second time while wearing a bra which was decorated with 3,000 white diamonds, light blue sapphires and topazes, all set in 18-karat white gold. The bra is reported to have taken six Damiani craftsmen 1,500 hours of full-time labour to complete.

The Harlequin Fantasy Bra $3million (£1,874,635.78)

The 2009 design featured 2,300 white, champagne, and cognac diamonds on the cups, as well as a 16-carat heart-shaped diamond pendant at its center.

$2million (£1,249,757.19)

BMAG 15

BMAG 16

The Floral Fantasy Bra and Gift Set

Model: Alessandra Ambrosio Price:

Birthstones have long fascinated people - ever since certain precious stones were linked to the zodiac and were fabled to have certain protective powers, meaning and significance. These days birthstones are linked to calendar months and people still believe certain precious stones assigned to your birth month can have a whole host of qualities that affect your destiny. January’s birthstone, garnet is blood red in colour and garnet means perseverance, truth, patience and consistency. Although most people think that garnets are only red in colour, but garnets come in a variety of colours like pink, green, yellow, violet and orange. This means that often garnet stones are mistaken for other precious stones like rubies or emeralds but in fact they are often much more durable and sometimes less expensive. This birthstone is even believed to protect from nightmares. All garnets will help to speed up the healing process and it is also believed that wearing garnet can calm anxiety and keep you safe whilst travelling.

February’s birthstone, amethyst is a beautiful purple stone associated with sincerity, peace of mind and good health. Amethyst is a symbol of protection and has the power to overcome difficulty. Encourages selfcontrol and strengthens the bond in a love relationship. Amethyst is also believed to have great mystical qualities and it can help to steady a restless mind and bring mental and emotional well-being. Amethyst brings intuition, motivation and sincerity. Aids in meditation and stabilises harsh emotions. If you love to feel like a princess then this is the stone for you.

March’s first birthstone, aquamarine is a pale blue coloured gemstone and is associated with foresight, knowledge and inspiration. Aquamarine is supposedly the poor man’s diamond but frankly we’d love a pair of aquamarine earrings - this is an incredibly popular gemstone. Aquamarine’s soothing blue colour is believed to bring mental clarity and releases negative energy from the wearer. Aquamarine brings courage, creativity, perception, hope and selfexpression. The second birthstone for March is bloodstone, a dark green opaque quartz flecked with red spots. The name bloodstone derives from the legendary belief that the red colouration resulted from the blood of Christ spilling onto green jasper during the crucifixion. For this reason, the stone has been called “martyr’s stone.” This stone is good for healing and symbolises courage. BMAG 20

April’s birthstone, diamond is the symbol of purity, innocence, eternity and courage. Diamond is the most sought after and expensive gem. In ancient times diamonds were believed to be tears of the Gods. The beauty and brilliance of a diamond is unparalleled and birthstones meaning for diamonds is eternal, everlasting love, strength and romance. The diamond has long been seen as the perfect gift to represent your love for another person. Wearing a diamond is supposed to bring courage to its owner, so better get down to Tiffany’s now. And as one of the most expensive and precious of all the gemstones, we can see why.

May’s birthstone, emerald brings happiness, prosperity, success and goodness. Emerald is also believed to cure ailments and legends said that emeralds had bewitching and magical properties. This dark green stone symbolises a whole host of qualities, including fertility, rebirth and love. Wearers of emeralds are supposed to gain wisdom, growth and patience. Emerald is one of the most regal stones in the whole collection, and was said to be Cleopatra’s favourite gem – Elizabeth Taylor here we come. It doesn’t get much more elegant and refined than an emerald.

June’s first birthstone, pearl has long been a symbol of purity. The ancient Greeks believed that pearls were the hardened tears of joy from Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Pearl is worn to calm a restless mind and to control anger. It is believed that people who wear pearl can succeed in creative work and it is also linked with a successful married life. Pearls are the only gemstones that do not need to be polished or cut to make them jewellery-worthy, making them really the only gem that is naturally beautiful. The second birthstone for June is alexandrite, helps renewal and regeneration, openness to higher self. Brings love, joy and luck. Alexandrite may be a lesser-known gemstone but it might be one of the most unique. In normal light it shines a lovely green colour but in incandescent light it changes to purple! June also has third birthstone moonstone, named because of its uncanny resemblance to the iridescent sheen of the moon. Moonstone varies in colour from clear to blue-white or peach. It was considered by ancient civilisations to be a sacred stone, bestowing the wearer with great spiritual understanding. A gift of this stone is symbolic of health and longevity. In Ancient India moonstone was seen to have magical properties and to this day moonstone is supposed to bring good fortune to all who wear it.

It’s believed that by wearing your birthstone you will be offered protection and good fortune - and who doesn’t want that? So if you’re interested in learning more about birthstones and their meanings, or simply want to choose a personal bit of jewellery then check out this month-by-month explanation of birthstones and their fabled meanings. July’s birthstone, ruby has been regarded by ancient Hindus as the “King of Gems.” It was believed to protect its wearer from evil. The ruby’s deep-red colour signifies love and passion. It stimulates nurturing emotions. Excellent for shielding from psychic attacks and gathering and amplifying energy. Ruby is associated with harmony, protection, enthusiasm, contentment, success, integrity and strength. It’s also one of the most durable gems for everyday wear, and one of the rarest too. Move over diamond, the ruby is in town! August’s birthstone, peridot signifies innocence, fidelity, strength and faith. It is sometimes called the evening emerald for its light green colour. Peridot is like the springtime emerald, a light refreshing green or olive coloured gem which not that many people know about. It was once believed that the green peridot crystals found in volcanic ashes were the tears of the volcano goddess, Pele. When set in gold, this gem was said to protect the wearer from nightmares, it balances your mind and calms emotional storms. It also aids digestion and insomnia. Peridots are supposed to be great protectors and are believed to have magical healing powers.

September

Sapphire

September’s birthstone, sapphire is associated with faith, honesty, wisdom and serenity. It is believed to increase mental clarity and enhance spirituality in a person. According to legends, the sapphire is supposed to guard your family and loved ones from harm. Sapphires are generally deep blue in colour but they are also found in other colours like yellow and pink. They range from a very light to very dark violet blue, but the most popular and prized colour is the deep dark blue. Sapphire promotes pure emotions - purity of mind, serenity, joy and peace. Opens the mind to beauty and love. Clears the mind of unwanted thoughts.

October’s birthstone, opal means hope, innocence and purity. It is believed to have healing and restoring qualities and there are many different varieties of opal. Opals are black or white in colour with variations of other colours within the stone. Opals are unique than any other stone and their sheer exquisiteness makes them a much sought after gem. The word comes from the Latin opalus, meaning “precious jewel.” Necklaces with opals set in them were worn to repel evil. The second birthstone for October is pink tourmaline; it has a magical property of pyroelectricity. Scientifically speaking, this means that when heated, the gem takes on a static electric charge, making it capable of attracting lightweight objects. Pink tourmaline stimulates the creativity of its wearer. Pink varieties of tourmaline range in colour from pastel pink to ruby red. A gift of this stone is symbolic of hope. It can even have more than one fused together so can be totally personal to you. November’s birthstone, citrine is a yellow-to-golden member of the quartz mineral group. Citrine has been called the “stone of the mind” because it helps mental and intellectual functions. Increases your self-esteem and energy. Balances and dissipates negative energy. Cleanses energy and vibrations in the atmosphere. Improves creativity, helps personal clarity and curves self-destructive tendencies. It’s also one of the most affordable of all the gemstones and can be orange, yellow or brown in colour. The second birthstone for November is topaz, symbolises love and affection. It is linked with wisdom, strength, courage and serenity. It soothes physical pain, promotes peace and calms emotions, as well as promoting forgiveness. Promotes individuality, self-confidence, creativity, mental clarity, increases focus and reduces mood swings and anxiety. Counteracts negative emotions. Topaz comes in a small variety of colours and can range from orange to pink to blue!

December’s birthstone, zircon might not have the prettiest name but it is still a stunning gemstone, it was even used as a substitute for diamonds for years. Zircon gems are supposed to guard travellers, guarantee peaceful nights and relieve pain and injury. In a range of colours from blue, yellow, red, orange and green it’s certainly not a substitute anymore - that’s for sure! The second birthstone for December is turquoise, signifies fortune, good luck, friendship, happiness, peace and patience. One of the oldest known gemstones, turquoise is a gemstone with something a little extra about it. Rather than your token sparkles, turquoise stones are usually opaque robin’s egg blue in colour. Turquoise brings mental peace and guards against illnesses. Turquoise rings, in particular, are thought to keep away evil spirits. It is a healing stone.

out - stop! Washing your hair every single day is actually going to take away all of those beautiful natural oils that you’ve built there. Give your hair a schedule and wash it every other day.

If you’re looking for some tips for growing out your hair, trust me, I feel your pain. I’ve been trying to grow mine out the last three years after cutting it. Growing your hair out comes down to pure science, ladies. After that, it is quite simple. No worries, you don’t need to resort to pricey extensions to get those long, luxurious locks. Try these tips for growing out your hair… AVOID SUGAR

Sugar, along with alcohol and too much caffeine, are horrible for your hair. These three things break down collagen at alarming rates and can increase acne, hair breakage, and pretty much make you unhealthy overall. They also lead to mood swings, which promote stress. When you are stressed, collagen immediately breaks down in your body faster than any other time. Anything you can do to de-stress is also recommended, like yoga, walking or spending time with friends.

EAT PLENTY OF PROTEIN

One of the first tips for growing your hair out is eating plenty of protein. Don’t worry, you won’t look like a bodybuilder, but your hair will look phenomenal. Your hair is basically made of protein, so skimping in this department slows down collagen production, which can actually stunt the growth of your hair. Eat at least 20-30g per meal. You may even lose a little weight since protein satisfies you more than fat or carbs.

DON’T USE EXCESSIVE HEAT

Styling fanatics put away all those hair tools and give yourself and your hair a break. If you’re brave, let your hair air dry instead of using your blow dryer. Anything you can do to reduce heat, tugging, and overly brushing your hair will help it grow faster.

EAT LEAFY GREENS

Leafy greens are not just great for your body, but they are also great for your hair. Leafy greens are rich in iron, folic acid, Vitamin E and some B vitamins. Some like spinach are also a great source of protein. Leafy greens nourish your cells on a deep level and keep you beautiful in all areas.

SNACK ON NUTS & SEEDS

Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds and hemp seeds are also excellent for your hair. These foods are rich in three key nutrients that your hair needs for growth and strength, including zinc, selenium and B vitamins. Their healthy fats also help your hair stay moist to prevent breakage.

TAKE BIOTIN

Biotin (B vitamin) is a must if you want long and healthy hair, plus it’s also great for your skin and nails. It is found in foods like eggs, fish, nuts and seeds. Biotin strengthens the hair and helps it grow since it aids in collagen production, preventing the breakdown of proteins.

COMMIT TO GROWING YOUR HAIR OUT

By far, one of the biggest things that us women do when we are growing our hair out is get bored. We want a new style and so we change it - and typically chop it off. If you want long hair, you’ve got to commit to not cutting it completely off and just getting regular trims!

DON’T WASH EVERYDAY

If you are one of those people that wash your hair every single day and you are trying to grow your hair

BMAG 38

OIL TREATMENTS

Oil treatments might seem like a fad, but they are a simple way to ensure that your hair looks beautifully lush and ever-so-soft! Olive oil and coconut oil are the two oils that are amazing for your hair! If you use an oil treatment once a week, leaving it on your hair for about 45 minutes and then washing it out, you’ll see how beautiful it looks and how easy it is to grow out!

TIE YOUR HAIR UP

Tying your hair up is another great way that a lot of people don’t think about when they are growing out their hair! Tying up your hair causes a better flow of oxygen to the outside of your hair and stimulates the follicles!

ARGON OIL

I know that I mentioned doing oil treatments, but Argon oil isn’t exactly a treatment, it’s something that you can leave in and it’s fantastic for your hair - and helps grow it out! Just a bit on the ends, a bit through it twice or three times a week and you’ll love your new long hair!

DEEP CONDITION TREATMENT

Besides oil treatments, you’ve got to make sure that you are deep conditioning too! Use your favourite conditioner or how about trying something new and fresh, such as egg whites or even avocado!

MASSAGE SCALP

Stimulating the hair follicles is most important, so giving yourself an awesome scalp massage (or conning your partner to do it for you!) is huge! Just twice or three times a week, fifteen minutes or so and you’ll see huge results!

COMB HAIR WHEN WET

Finally, now that you know all of the different ways that you can grow your hair out, remember to take care of the hair that you have! Combing your hair when it is wet instead of brushing your hair with a brush is a huge no-no. Combing won’t damage your hair all that much, however, the brushing your hair when wet will. Keep that in mind after your next shower!

If you’re trying to lose weight, tone up, get fitter or drop a dress size, the amount of conflicting info when it comes to exercising can be overwhelming. And with Christmas just around the corner, now is officially the best time to start getting in shape. If you start a routine now, you can lose weight steadily and safely to look party perfect for the winter festivities.

myth:

You have to exercise in the morning to get the most out of your workout

You should exercise at a time of day that suits you. Your body will respond in the same way to exercise whether it is morning afternoon or evening. Make sure you have a small snack before any workout about an hour before hand to ensure you have enough energy for the whole session. Some people prefer to exercise in the morning as they feel it sets them up for the day, which can work well whereas others just aren’t early birds, and prefer to exercise in the evening at the end of the day to de-stress. Either way, the important thing is to make sure you make the time for your exercise sessions and do them between 3 and 5 times a week.

myth:

You have to eat protein straight after a work out

This depends what you are training for. It is advisable to replenish your glycogen stores after exercise so rather than protein, go for carbs instead or take a sports drink before, during and after your workout. If you are looking to build muscle and lose protein after exercise can be very beneficial.

myth:

If you do lots of weights you will bulk out

This depends on what you are training for. It is very difficult to increase muscle size for both men and women. If it was easy to bulk up, the BMAG 46

myth: people that desire this would all have bulging biceps when the reality is in order to bulk up, regular structured intense exercise is needed along with supplements. It is incredibly difficult for women to add muscle mass as testosterone levels are generally not high enough. If you do not want to get bulky, do sets of between 10 - 15 repetitions so that by number 15 you cannot complete any more. If you do want to get bulky, you must lift very heavy weights so that you fatigue on rep number 5.

myth:

Cardio is the fastest way to lose weight and tone up

The fastest way to lose weight is diet. Some people may find that statement controversial but it is true. It is far easier to cut 1000 calories out of your diet per day than burn 1000 calories from exercise. That said, if we just diet and neglect exercise our metabolism may slow and eventually our weight loss may plateau. Cardio is an effective weight loss tool as you can realistically burn 300-600 calories in an exercise session; it will also have a positive impact upon metabolism. Also don’t forget that cardio doesn’t have to mean plodding away on the treadmill, bike or cross trainer. It could also include more high intensity, interval work such as a spin class, a netball game or tennis match. Weight training is, however, a key part of a weight loss and physique transformation program. It will give your muscles a better shape, make them tighter (i.e. they will hold greater tone) and it will increase your metabolism meaning you’ll burn more calories, and thus fat, all the time.

You have to do 40 minutes of cardio before you start burning fat

At rest you’re actually mainly burning fat. The problem is that you’re not actually using much energy so you’re not burning much fat. As you exercise, energy demand increases and in order to deliver this fast enough to muscles there is a shift towards carbohydrate, but fat is still being burned. As exercise progresses and a balance in the metabolism is reached the percentage of energy coming from fat increases and, yes, it is often said that after around 40 minutes this percentage has increased significantly. So what does all this mean? There are two ways of looking at the problem, both of which are correct in their own way. Firstly our bodyweight and body fat levels are not dictated by what energy source we use in exercise, they are dictated by energy balance across the day, i.e. how much we eat versus how much we burn. With this is mind, the key factor is not how long we exercise for but how many calories we burn whilst we exercise. More intense exercise performed for shorter periods seems to have a bigger impact upon metabolism so we’re burning more calories when we’re just sitting watching TV in the evening. On the other hand there is an argument, supported by some evidence, that longer exercise bouts train the fat burning metabolic systems and thus make us a more effective fat burner all the time. The logical conclusion is to do some shorter, high intensity sessions, perhaps in an interval training fashion, and some longer, slower sessions.

myth:

The longer you spend in the gym the quicker you will get results

There is no doubt that a significant commitment to exercise is required to bring about noteworthy physical changes. That said, it is very easy to over train and many will find that a well planned, targeted exercise program will garner better results than one that just revolves around living in the gym. If weight loss is a key goal then the more calorie you can burn in the gym the quicker you will lose weight. However, shorter, higher intensity sessions can play an essential role in a training program, as can weight training.

myth:

Exercising can sap your energy levels

Exercise should boost your energy levels after the workout. This however depends on the intensity of your workout, your diet, sleep and stress. Exercise can have a positive impact on how you feel afterwards because of the feel good hormones (endorphins) that are released. A standard workout at a moderate to vigorous intensity should certainly leave you feeling full of beans, but if you have run a marathon for example, you would more than likely feel like your energy levels have been sapped!

BMAG 48

myth:

You should work on different parts of your body each day

It depends what your goals are. If you are aiming to add muscle mass, then using a split routine is great. Training different body parts each session allows maximum focus on each area and maximum rest before you train the same body part again.

myth:

Exercising will increase your metabolism so you can eat more

If you are exercising, your metabolism will increase and thus the amount of food required to maintain your bodyweight will also increase. The problem is that often people overestimate how much more food they can eat and it is not uncommon to see people gain weight when they begin an exercise program for this very reason. If you aim is fat loss, you should eat a healthy diet, exercise frequently and never use the excuse that you’ve earned a burger because you’ve trained hard!

myth:

Skipping meals and exercising will make you lose weight quicker Skipping meals is one of the biggest mistakes made by people looking to lose weight. Whilst it may reduce your calorie intake it will also dramatically reduce your metabolism, which reduces the amount of calories you will burn. The key is to eat small meals regularly throughout the day. This will maximise your metabolic rate and as long as total calorie intake is controlled your weight loss should be effective and steady.

1. Plan ahead

Christmas is portrayed as being a happy holiday, but the reality for many is just the opposite. Instead of joy, there is stress and debt and guilt. Unfortunately, for most families Christmas is the most stressful period of the year. Endless interactions with friends and relatives, last minute shopping, great expenditures, and the pressure of holiday preparations undermine the delight and fabulous atmosphere of Christmas. If this sounds like your usual holiday season, you can take steps to ensure that this Christmas will be the happiest.

If the stress of last minute shopping is what keeps you from being happy during the holidays, planning ahead may work better. Try to do your shopping throughout the year so you don’t have to brave the stores when the crowds are awful. If you plan it right, you won’t even have to brave Christmas traffic. Apart from shopping, your to-do list should also include presents, food, decoration ideas and expenses and even a seating plan. When making a guest list prep their e-mail addresses and phone numbers in advance so that you can easier contact them. Rank the points according to their importance and you’ll see what you should start doing in November and what can be done just a few hours before celebration.

2. Focus on activities instead of gifts

Enjoy experiences with your family this year. While gifts can be nice, the real memories come from playing with the children, taking a latenight drive around town or singing with friends. Spend some time surfing the Internet and you’ll find hundreds of great ideas on how to get your children involved in free festive activities. Everything that is done together, from making Christmas crafts to playing games and puzzles, is always appreciated. Having fun together should be high on the priority list. Don’t forget to grab a camera to capture those moments of joy and delight.

3. Limit your engagements

You don’t have to attend every party on the block. Pick a couple that you can’t miss and politely decline the rest of the invitations. You shouldn’t have to pack your schedule with more than you can really do comfortably. This way you’ll have more time to spend with your family and eliminate excess stress. However, if you want to meet your friends, colleagues and neighbours, consider hosting a big party and gather together all the people you want to share Christmas cheer with.

4. Share your blessings

Nothing brings greater joy than making other people happy. Whether you invite someone with no family over for dinner or take a food basket to a needy family, you’ll find that you get much more from it than they do. By sharing with those in need you show a great example of helpfulness and generosity for your children. De-clutter your home and I bet you’ll find a lot of new yet unnecessary things like unworn clothes, toys or accessories. While you don’t need these items, someone may need them. It will make you happy to help others, so go ahead and start sharing. BMAG 54

5. Budget carefully and stick to it

Spending too much over the holidays can cause even more stress. It also results in guilt after the holiday is over, when you realise you probably didn’t need to spend so much. In short, a budget can help you save money and feel better about it. While planning your budget you should pay special attention to not so visible yet great money wasters like overseas telephone charges, postage, unplanned purchases and extras. This will enable you to compute your Christmas budget more realistically and avoid splurging. Define the limit that you can spend on each category and always keep your eyes open for ongoing expenditures. If your expenditures seem to exceed the limit, consider free and lowcost ways to celebrate this Christmas.

6. Play more games

Playing games is not for children only. Fun Christmas games are the perfect icebreaker to help your guests come in contact with each other and feel comfortable. Board games used to be a staple of holiday gatherings. It’s still a lot of fun to break out the Monopoly board when you have friends pop by. Not only is playing games an enjoyable way to spend an evening, it’s also budget friendly.

7. Skip the gifts

When it comes to gift giving, it can be challenging to pick the right thing for each person, not to mention expensive. Instead of trying to make everyone happy, why not suggest that your family skip gifts for the adults this year? If desired, the money could be put toward a charity or you can just completely eliminate the whole tradition. Many families do this and find it much easier. The children will still receive gifts, of course. Doing ‘Secret Santa’ is also a good way to save money this Christmas. Prepare the box filled up with the names of your guests and let your guests buy a present only for the person whose name they drew out of the pile.

8. Make it handmade

If you can’t bring yourself to completely eliminate the gifts, you might want to try making each gift more meaningful. Presents that have been created by your own hands are extra special and will be much appreciated. You don’t have to be very skilful or seasoned to make a nice greeting card, a small stuffed toy or a bracelet. The Internet is full of simple and amazing ideas and tutorials even for beginners. Stock up on the DIY supplies and rejoice your friends and family with unique handmade presents.

9. Take time to relax

It’s easy to find yourself running all over the place during the holidays, but relaxation is the key to happiness during the holiday season. Even on Christmas Eve, when most mummies and wives are busy with meal, gifts and last preparations, you should carve out some time to sit back and indulge yourself. Take time to sip your hot chocolate and enjoy life a little. You’ll be back to work soon enough, so make the most of your time off. If you need some extra hands don’t hesitate to invite your family or friends to help you with cooking and serving and use this time to take fragrant bath and dress up. Christmas hustle and bustle is great, but from time to time you should slow down and enjoy the present moment.

10. Teach your children

You may feel that Christmas is better with fewer presents and more fun, but what about the children? Teach them from a young age to appreciate the season and they will be more than happy to celebrate with activities instead of mountains of gifts. Incorporating several unique family traditions into your celebration will make the holiday utterly breathtaking for your family. Even simple activities like festive cooking or decorating your home and Christmas tree can become so precious family traditions. This way you’ll teach your children that family time and memories are something most valuable ever. Christmas should be a time of family togetherness and happiness. It doesn’t just happen, though; you have to make the holidays cheerful and bright. Luckily, there are lots of ways to reduce stress during this holiday season by following simple strategies and tips. Take action to make this your best year yet.

Christmas is one of my favourite holidays and not because of the gifts, but because of the beautiful decor. So what better holiday to centre your big day around with colours of red and green or sparkling colours like silver and gold. From paper trees to bouquets full of pine, continue reading for some fascinating ideas for a Christmas wedding...

CHRISTMAS WEDDING CENTREPIECE...

CHRISTMAS WEDDING SAVE THE DATE...

How much fun would it be to take engagement photos for your Christmas wedding around a Christmas tree and send them out as Save the Date! This is a Christmas wedding idea must for those who really love the holiday season!

CHRISTMAS WEDDING GUESTBOOK...

I really need to get myself some mason jars, I have seen so many wonderful centrepieces like this Christmas wedding idea, and would love to fill my house with the same look. It is such a simple idea to put a few things like some pine cones and cranberries into a mason jar, yet it makes such a big statement that will inspire all of your guests. You could even send them home with these pretty little centrepieces as favours if you are able to part with them!

Is this not the cleverest Christmas wedding idea you’ve ever seen! I couldn’t love another wedding guest book idea as much as I love this idea of having your guests write love notes and advice on Christmas ornaments and hanging them on a tree! What could be a better gift the following Christmas as you hang your new ornaments and read all of the wonderful messages your friends and family left for you to enjoy.

CHRISTMAS WEDDING BOUQUET...

A stunning red peony bouquet works so well for a Christmas wedding and will grab the attention of all your guests as you walk down the aisle. Just as eye catching are the other bouquets for Christmas wedding ideas with a mixture of pine tree branches, pine cones, red berries and flowers in the one, and a bouquet full of pine tree branches in the other.

CHRISTMAS WEDDING GARLAND...

Garlands are one of my favourite Christmas decor items to put around the house. What I love about this Christmas wedding idea is not just the pine tree garland, but also the beautiful ornaments that hang from it. What a fun idea to hang Christmas ornaments in the colours of your wedding theme, you could even put them in your centrepieces or use them with your escort cards as well.

CHRISTMAS WEDDING FAVOURS...

If you are on a tight wedding budget, these sweet little DIY jars are the perfect Christmas wedding idea to put together for your favours. They are so easy to put together that you won’t even realize that you are doing a DIY craft for your big day! Just a few ingredients in a jar, a cute tag, ribbon to match your wedding colours, and you have yourself a favour your guests are sure to enjoy during this blustery season.

CHRISTMAS WEDDING PAPER TREES...

I adore these paper trees, how could you not! These are made from old book pages, but another idea that popped in my head was yet another clever guest book for your Christmas wedding. Instead of using the book pages, you could use blank pages and ask your guests to write a message on them for you to enjoy for many holidays to come! How much do you love that Christmas wedding idea, one you could use at holiday parties as well.

Christmas wedding ideas don’t have to be gaudy and overwhelming. They can be festive yet chic when you have a garland with ornaments of silver and gold hanging from it or a simple pine cone and cranberry mason jar centrepiece to give to your guests as favours. When it comes to planning holiday themes and using Christmas wedding ideas on your big day, less is always more. Stop by your venue once they have the holiday decor up and see how much more you really need, it’s always a good idea to scale back when there are floor to ceiling trees full of lights or big wreaths hanging over each table. Pick the perfect date, one that suits you. Remember you can’t please all your guests. So if you find a date that you prefer, stick to it!

Frost Yourself

Jewels, Glitter & Sparkle

Wild Berries, Roses & Paperwhites

In keeping with the winter wonderland theme, you want to keep your flowers looking crisp and divine. Use berries from the forest in your bouquet to add a hint of rustic and a woodland vibe.

It seems we have reached the pinnacle of the winter season and it is time for a leisurely break away and some ‘guy time’ for a change. Whether you intend on hitting the slopes or not, pay attention to this fabulous Après Ski style guide for you to incorporate into your high winter look for the festive period. SVA would like to introduce you to your new capsule collection for Après Ski, including a fabulous ‘Survival Kit’ for you to take pleasure from. From exploring the options of fur to the bare essentials for surviving the elements this winter, warm up to the idea of doing it all in style.

Feel like a fox swooping into the bar for a brandy or whiskey after a long hard day of leisure. Whether its faux or not it is certainly a winter staple for looking dashing on the slopes. Don’t you agree? When it comes to outerwear, opt for a fur collar! - Adding prestige and sexiness to either your overcoat or Moncler.

Complete the look with essential footwear that finishes at the ankle. Indeed ankle-boots are perfect for tucking your trouser ends into and surviving the elements. Sporting a good pair of leather booties make a great statement. Investing a little extra in the quality of leather is always well worth it! BMAG 66

Layering is important when it comes to winter trends. Getting it right however is another thing all together. Combing checks and cable knits is guaranteed to be a good thing. However make sure you layer and colour co-ordinate at the same time. There is nothing worse than a mismatch.

Every guy needs one! Take note of these essential items next time you take a weekend break out in the country or up in the mountains - Swiss Army Knife, Whiskey Flask, Shaving Blade, Lighter Ring and Cigars.

Baby, it’s cold outside! The leaves are nearly gone, and the temperature has dropped, but you’d never know it here. It may be winter outside, but the fresh fabrics and bright palette inside offer a new take on Christmas cheer. This Christmas, we’ve got a spring in our step, a perky outlook and a summery disposition thanks to decor that peels back and brightens up the typically heavy layers of holiday tradition. Green is citrine. Red is fuchsia. Velvet is linen. It’s amazing how the simple use of fresh colours and light fabrics can revive the holiday spirit. Why, if you didn’t know better, you’d think it was Christmas in July!

Add a cheerful touch to your Christmas decor with these fun ideas

Fancy Feet These mossy green silk stockings with leafy

ruffled cuffs and citrine presents inside perfectly play off the raspberry-coloured ornaments interspersed among them. Because both stockings and ornaments are strong holiday symbols, a festive scene can be set with pretty much any colour or pattern. A boxwood garland is a holiday element that also takes advantage of the season’s natural flora.

BLUE CHRISTMAS A tropical-inspired centrepiece filled with blush

and white roses, citrine hydrangeas and eyecatching blue poinsettias provides ample colour and texture to the tablescape.

bedroom, decked out in light cotton in tropical colours, from merry to Merry Christmas.

COLOUR CODE The key to creating this kind of look is to choose your fabrics wisely. Picking fabrics in two or three colour families allows you to mix and match almost any patterns. And don’t overlook your closet – you can repurpose old dresses and shirts that might not live to see another summer!

PREPPY TRIMMINGS Thin strips of fabric tied to the tips of Christmas

tree branches make a summery substitute for tinsel. For texture, fray the edges by handtearing your fabric: using scissors, snip a 1 to 2 inch cut at the top of the fabric, then use your hands to tear along the grain in one swift motion to the bottom.

TRAY SECRETS Line a serving tray with textured fabric and IN THE PINK BEAR FRUIT ground it in the season with your favourite When using a palette limited to only two or Summery fabric, used on the dining chairs and holiday sweets, cookies and drinks. as table linens, is also wrapped around hurricane vases. Hits of bright turquoise keep the table from looking too fussy, while juicy oranges make a healthy holiday favour.

SET FOR SUMMER The power of an ornament

is incredible: it alone can make a “dog-day” table setting feel holiday. To recreate the effect, tie a nametag to a satin ribbon and embellish with a small ornament (a favour that guests can take home for their own trees). Make your own napkins by cutting or tearing fabric into 20-inch squares and leaving the edges unfinished (or frayed for that shabby-chic summer look). Alternate colours and patterns while sticking to your overall palette to maintain a quirky vibe.

CALLING CARDS With their pink background and red-

winged blackbird illustration, these greeting cards seem to say “Happy Spring!” But the white cloud and sparkly border hint at the holiday just enough to suit our scheme. BMAG 71

15 Ways to Create a

From comfy throws to wood burning stoves, your home can go from summer cool to winter warm in a pinch. Cosy Winter Home The weather outside may be frightful, but that doesn’t have to stop your home from being a warm haven to retreat to after a long day at work. With lots of soft textures, romantic lighting options, cabin accessories and cosy alternatives that will cut down your energy bill, you can transform even a sleek, modern space into a comfortably warm winter escape.

Snow Globes

Just because it’s chilly outside doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the snow! Embrace a winter white colour scheme in your home. White snow globes create a pretty winter wonderland in your home with just a few shakes.

Winter Home Scents

Smell plays a big role in creating a cosy atmosphere in your home, whether it’s cookies baking in the oven or a scented candle warming a room. For a winter smell try a woodsy aroma of fir, cypress and hearth, in candles, diffusers or room sprays.

BMAG 72

Quilts Plaid Throw

For a cabin look, opt for lots of plaids and tartans in your space. A few plaid throws are great to have on hand for snuggling up in your home on chilly winter nights.

Slippers for Guests

Don’t forget about visitors when preparing your home for the winter season. Keep a few pairs of faux fur booties/slippers on hand for the tootsies of friends coming over for afternoon tea or family popping by for Sunday dinner.

The temperature plummets at night during winters, causing heating costs to skyrocket. Keep your utilities at bay by adding a quilt to the bottom of the beds in your home, ready to just pull up over the duvet if the night gets chilly. A quilt is really one of the winter bedroom essentials.

Floor Runners

There’s nothing worse than rolling out of bed on a wintry day and heading to the kitchen to make coffee only to feel your feet freeze on the tiles beneath you. For rooms with tile or stone flooring, toss down a few carpet runners and bold area rugs to keep your home warm underfoot.

Towel Warmer

Treat yourself to the ultimate in winter luxuries. A towel warmer keeps your bath towels toasty so you don’t feel a chill after hopping out of the shower. It is one of the nicest beautiful bathroom ideas ever.

Daybed

Soft Textures

During the hot summer months, it’s all about paring down our homes to the bare minimum, with wide-open spaces and cool, sleek furniture. Cosy up your home for winter by introducing soft textures like cashmere, velvet, faux fur and wool.

Warm Candlelight

Cosying up inside on a Sunday afternoon with a cup of hot chocolate while the cold wind blows around outside – sounds ideal, right? Create a serene space for such blissful days by adding a decorated daybed to a nook in your home. It can also double up as a soothing guest room.

The shorter winter days not only take a toll on your mood, but your electricity bill as well. Decorating with candles can help counter this effect. Flick off the lights and create a cosy atmosphere in your home with soft candlelight, perfect for relaxing with a loved one or catching up on your favourite TV shows.

Shag Rug

Flannel Sheet Set

Give your feet a treat by laying down soft rugs throughout your home’s living areas. Switch up the flat weaves from the summer months and try a fluffy shag for the winter season. BMAG 74

Soft sheets are worth their weight in gold, and a flannel set is the only way to go in the winter. Plus it is an easy way to create a bedroom makeover.

Antler Chandelier

Transform your home into a ski lodge with a few simple touches, like an antler chandelier. Put the light on a dimmer to create an intimate atmosphere in your dining room or living space.

Warm Soups & Stews

Nothing warms the heart and a home like a big pot of soup or stew simmering on the stove. Let the aroma of wild mushroom and butternut squash soup fills your home with tasty smells of the season.

Wood Burning Stove

There’s nothing like the comforting smell of a wood-burning stove. Reminiscent of warming cottages, wood stoves are a great way to keep your home’s heating costs down as well.

DECEMBER 2014

SAGITTARIUS

22NOV - 21DEC

Your high spirits are in great demand at Christmas. Children love joking around with you, taking delight in your silly behaviour. Even a stern relative will smile at your antics. If you’re single, you could meet someone special at a festive get together. Nudge gentle fun at an attractive person who projects an air of dignity. Pretty soon, the object of your affection will let down their defences and start laughing with you. Are you already in a relationship? Write them a heartfelt love letter.

Spending time with your nearest and dearest makes Christmas one of your favourite times of year. It feels great to be surrounded by people who know the real you. You’ve always been a fantastic actor, allowing you to blend in with any group. Sometimes this causes you to feel rather hypocritical, fearing others would dislike your true personality. Fortunately, your family loves how compassionate and creative you are, celebrating these qualities whenever you’re together. What a fabulous gift.

Talking with old friends makes Christmas a special time. Be sure to call loved ones who live far away. You’ll have a great time catching up and discussing all the gifts you’ve received. Help a child put together a toy, bicycle, or gadget. You’re so good with your hands, and may be the only one who can manage all those tiny parts and pieces. Don’t forget to check your email. Someone has sent you a loving message that merits an immediate response.

Attending a party will give you a chance to show off an attractive outfit. Take extra time with your appearance, as all eyes will be on you. Be sure to use some luxurious toiletries you received for Christmas. Although you don’t place much importance on appearance, it does feel good to look your best in a big crowd. Your best friend or lover is could be feeling rather moody, and will try to bring you down with sarcastic comments. Don’t let anyone spoil this special day for you.

22DEC - 19JAN

You’ll receive several gifts that pique your interests. One of your favourite things about Christmas is having a chance to enjoy music, movies, and games. You have to admit; you’ve been so busy this season you’ve barely had time to breathe. Now you have some time off, you can indulge your love of leisure. Don’t feel compelled to clean up after a party all by yourself. By enlisting the aid of friends and relatives, you’ll get the job done in no time flat.

21MAR - 19APR

Christmas infuses you with energy. You’ll be busy making the rounds of parties. Checking in with friends, neighbours, and relatives lifts your spirits. You’re excited to sample all the delicious food offered on this Yule. A loved one who feels depressed is reluctant to join the festivities. Some persuasive words from you will change their tune. You hate to see someone wallowing in sorrow when they could be having fun. Singing carols never fails to keep the blues at bay.

21JUN - 22JUL

Your accurate perceptions have caused you to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones. It’s gratifying to see the expressions on their faces as they open presents. There’s a chance you won’t get what you really wanted this Christmas. If that’s the case, why not treat yourself to this item? There’s nothing wrong with buying yourself a little something. Wait until the shopping season is over, you’ll find a great price on desirable merchandise. Go ahead and splurge!

23SEP - 220CT

Christmas is a time to come together with your nearest and dearest. It’s a relief to see people enjoy all the cooking, shopping, and decorating you’ve performed. You’re not the only one who has been working hard. Someone looked far and wide to find you a special gift. This present has an enticing foreign flavour that meets with your approval. Be sure to put this tribute in a prominent place where you will always enjoy it. Your friends know you better than you think.

AQUARIUS

20JAN - 18FEB

Christmas is a time of communion. Spending time with your expensive social circle will be uplifting. You’ve made a lot of friends this year, while managing to maintain old relationships. That’s quite an accomplishment. Bringing both groups together at a party will be more successful than you expected. It’s a varied bunch, but everyone has one thing in common: You. Playing a game like charades or 20 questions will draw out even the shyest members of the group.

TAURUS

20APR - 20MAY

LEO

23JUL - 23AUG

You’re torn between your mind and body. On one hand, you long to enjoy the Christmas festivities. On the other, you’re intent on overseeing all the details of a festive get together. You want to make sure all the food is well prepared and there are enough gifts for everyone. Don’t stay in the kitchen while everyone else is having fun. If certain details fall through the cracks, don’t worry. Everybody will be enjoying themselves so much they won’t notice any mistakes.

Your youthful enthusiasm makes Christmas a fun time for everyone. Even the most stodgy friends and relatives can’t help but smile at your antics. If you know someone who is celebrating alone, invite them over to share the excitement. It feels good to share your blessings. A friend who lives faraway could call as you’re just sitting down to eat. Go ahead and answer; the lively conversation will stimulate your appetite. Don’t let children fight over a toy. Let this be a teaching moment about sharing.

SCORPIO

23OCT - 21NOV

Christmas is a festival of sights, sounds, and aromas. Be sure to record your memories in a diary. You can integrate these memories into a compelling story or screenplay. People have a way of letting down their defences during the festive season. It’s fascinating to see cynics become sentimental after receiving gifts. Someone will ask you to help with meal preparation or babysitting. Lend your assistance for an hour or two, just to give this person a break.
