My vision of Architecture is that of great impact. I believe that we, as people of the discipline carry the responsibility of not only establishing a built environment, but are equally responsible for the impacts that our creations have, locally and regionally. Theres more to Architecture than just a physical presence, it is the manufacturing of experiences and memories through the intricate and meaningful process of Design.

Dignified Revival
Re-establishing dignity within marginalized societies Dharavi, Mumbai, India Marginalized populations exist in dense urban areas all over the world. Seeking economic opportunities, they immigrate to areas of such capacity, but for social, political and cultural reasons they become disenfranchised. These emigrating communities find like-minded people and end up forming diverse communities. As a result, they produce an alternative society with its own cultural and economic systems. The marginalization of these populations strips them of their human dignity, however, these improvised societies are rich in social life and make the best out of their current social conditions. This thesis aims to study social space through the principal research question “how can architecture dignify and reinforce community for marginalized populations?. Architecture has the capacity to dignify these people’s lives but needs to be sensitive to the cultural specifics of these diverse societies, especially in terms of religion, gender roles and the improvised economic systems. Architecture must identify and reinforce the commonalities between these people and should do so with high regards to the improvised culture in order to enhance the sense of community between them. To reinforce and dignify community for marginalized populations, architecture must be sensitive to their cultural, religious and economic backgrounds. It should seek to unite and empower the commonalities of these populations through a shared social space that will address their basic needs as well as provide a platform outside of work for communication. An essential step to reinforcing the communities of Dharavi is through reviving the river system at the intersection of the slum. In doing so, the sacred characteristics of water will regain their significance, and the people of Dharavi will have a clean resource to support them.

To begin the dignifying process, the community must go through a restoration process, in which their basic necessity is retrieved, in the case of my thesis, water.
To allow for a continuation of the basic needs, it has to go through a process of maintenance, a process that educates the community as well as serves them.
Enhancing the community requires providing jobs, and allowing for their quality of life to be raised not by the average standard of the world, but by the local and personal standards.

Human waste is transformed into fertilizer through the adding of bacteria in this dry composting latrine, this creates a cycle of energy that allows people to begin to use something that was a nuisance towards the betterment of the area.
The understructure of the plaza hosts a large water tank that receives the water coming in from the pipes and culminates it. During rain, the collectors would funnel the rain water more strategically, as well as filter the rain water, this is due to the airborne pollutants that may carry diseases.

The Cage of Enlightenment Discovering the journey of meditation Springfield, MO, USA
A path that is straight doesn’t necessarily lead to enlightenment, however, one in which obstacles slow you down allows you to take a moment to breathe it all in. This sanctuary was meant to stray away from orthodox Buddhism and provide for a different atmosphere for enlightenment, “Buddha” exists within nature. It is a point of convergence for the multiple campuses around the area as well.

Link Independence: Envisioning connections Re-establishing the city’s identity Independence, MO, USA
The city center of Independence, MO lacks linkage, that linkage could be established through implementations of complete streets. The abundance of hard surfaces as well as the lack of vegetative surfaces makes it uncomfortable to be outdoors. The implementation of pedestrian oriented atmospheres rather than vehicular oriented is key to giving the city it’s identity.

Route 66 Museum Light as signage Springfield, MO, USA
Theres a certain inspiration that can be driven from the neon lit culture that formulated alongside the development of this historic route. I envisioned a place in which that idea of a building that becomes a light fixture in itself can become the sign or billboard that people decided to stop by after a long ride in this route.

A Tractor House
Showcasing a prideful history Fair Grove, MO, USA The 1905 Case steam tractor was considered the work horse of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Strong, reliable and well engineered, it was one of the basic forms of power and propulsion that drove American Industrial and Agricultural expansion. The chosen form of this tractor house was to be a simple container like object, being softened up by the frosted channel glass members, as well as a slightly dynamic roof member that embraces the culture that was driven by these steam powered machines. It almost seems as if the building is the machine hosting another.

Fair Grove Center for Generations Engaging the open landscape Fair Grove, MO, USA
All natural shelters were formed through a process that was initiated from a single aspect. In this project, i explore how sand formed shelters throughout time, to provide for this two-phase project that starts off as a senior center and eventually evolves into a community center. This project investigated how the involvement of landscape into the design process can produce a unique experience, unfamiliar to the usual use of the location.

Water Drop Bench
An approach to disaster relief Joplin, MO, USA After the devastating tornado that hit joplin in 2011, many efforts have been made to help the people recover, one of which was the re-establishment of Cunningham Park and the Butterfly Garden. This bench was designed in response to many issues of grief and recovery, and the shape of a settling water drop was the inspiration behind it. An easy to assemble section modulus that is safe from theft and long hours of use.

Understanding material and surface optimization for fabrication Optimizing surfaces for design is no doubt one of the most helpful tools a young architect could learn. In this project we were to go through a series of processes turning a curvilinear surface into one that is much simpler to fabricate in real life, helping us get an understanding of how actual materials can be designed in a way that doesn’t necessarily deprive the end result from the original intention.
