ACADEMIC WORK
ARTICHOKE from nature to design
collaborative project + Victor Campos Marcia Trento AUP 446 – FAU USP 2008
Creation of a physical model transposing properties observed in an element of nature — the artichoke. After meticulous analysis through hand drawing (tracing back to inventors like Da Vinci), several properties of twisting and turning could be identified. Amongst them, a curious spiral pattern found in the heart of the artichoke was taken as a starting point for the development of the model. It was then translated into a torsion movement, with rubber bands inside of a shell creating drawing patterns that change spatially as the object is moved.
URBAN PARK conceptual exercise
individual project AUP 659 – FAU USP 2011
Design of a park for a hypothetical ground, in which were explored topography, creation of spaces through masses of vegetation and variety of function and spatial character of the different park areas. As a protagonist, the water feature permeates the entire park assuming different shapes: a narrow stream, cascading down a major crossing or as a peaceful lake.
PERCEPTION OF OPEN SPACES BY PEDESTRIANS urban design project for São Paulo
individual graduation project TFG – FAU USP 2012
What is the perception of open spaces by the pedestrian? How can Architecture and Landscape Design influence such experience of spaces? What characteristics/ features may contribute for an enhanced experience of urban space and people feeling compelled to use them? These are some of the questions that instigate me the most and that have driven the development of my graduation project in Architecture and Urbanism at University of SĂŁo Paulo.
Starting off from conceptual research to establish qualities inherent of a place — rather than merely a “space”— I have then designed a sequence of public open areas along Vergueiro Street, in São Paulo. The project adopted a qualitative approach, focusing on the perception of open spaces by the pedestrian. Composition of landscape elements was thoroughly explored as a means of structuring the built environment: through vegetation, street furniture, sequence of spaces creating a sense of direction, emphasizing interesting views, or suggesting new facilities for leisure and small businesses. In this research exercise, urban and landscape design were explored as regeneration tools that can enable underused areas of the city to thrive with life again.
