Sustainable futures at B&FC

Our Sustainable Curriculum

Automotive, Construction, Engineering and Fashion are all industries which have been previously identified as major contributors to planetary damage. As a result, the industrial practices in these sectors are beginning to change. To ensure the next generation of designers, researchers and manufacturers are more attuned to eco conscious behaviours, courses in these areas have sustainability embedded in them so that apprentices learn about the importance of recycled materials, alternative technologies and reusable resources.

The Sustainability Centre

Hello, my name is Emily Bowdler and I am one of the Client Relationship Managers at Blackpool and The Fylde College. I recently joined B&FC in January 2023 and I currently manage and support a wide range of Levy clients locally and regionally with their training and apprenticeship needs. I have been working in Apprenticeships for over 6 years and have completed a Business Apprenticeship myself, meaning I am able to relate to other apprentices on programme and also give employers an insight into apprenticeships from the view of an apprentice.

Whilst sustainability is a thread running through all our curriculum, in some areas we have gone even further. For example, we have recently launched The Sustainability Centre at our Bispham campus. Fitted with all the latest consumer-accessible green technologies, like solar PV, air-source heat pumps and the specialist insulation, the Retrofit House gives apprentices the chance to work with these technologies first-hand, giving them all the skills they need to successfully install and maintain them. With regulatory changes on the horizon which will affect consumers in both the energy and automotive sectors, getting ahead of the curve on the Retrofit revolution will not only help to futureproof homes but futureproof people’s businesses too.

Level 3 Lab Technician Apprenticeship

Are your employees responsible for proactively finding solutions and identifying areas for improvement? Do you want them to develop the skills, behaviours and knowledge to excel in the science industry? If your answer is yes, you’ve come to the right place. Our inspiring new programme allows employers to develop new apprentices in sectors such as polymers, nutraceuticals, analytical science and educational settings.

Laboratory technicians are expected to work both individually and as part of a team. They are able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of their own work.

This apprenticeship is delivered on a day-release basis with 4 days per week in the workplace. Knowledge, skills and behaviours learned both at college and in the workplace will be evidenced by the apprentice throughout the programme and contribute to the End Point Assessment.

The apprenticeship standard is delivered over 24 months plus 3 months for the EPA, carried out using SIAS.

This apprenticeship costs £21k, eligible for draw-down from the apprenticeship levy or for up to 95% government funding.
