OUTSTANDING LEARNING OUTSTANDING FUTURES BEST FOR SUCCESS

EVERY INDIVIDUAL IS VALUED AND ENCOURAGED TO BELIEVE THEY CAN SUCCEED.

B&FC is the highest performing large general further education college for student success in England for the second year running.1 Out of 216 general FE and tertiary colleges in England, our achievement rates placed us second nationally (for all students at all levels), third for 16-18-year-olds, fourth for students aged 19 and over, and first for timely (for all students at all levels).

GRADE 1 OUTSTANDING I n October 2013, the College became one of just three UK general Further Education colleges to receive Grade 1 Outstanding from Ofsted across each of the main areas: in addition to Overall effectiveness, the College was rated Outstanding for Outcomes for Learners; Quality of teaching, learning and assessment; and Effectiveness of leadership and management2.

A RECORD NUMBER OF COMMENDATIONS Our Ofsted report echoed the findings of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) earlier the same year, when B&FC received more commendations than any other university or higher education establishment in the UK to date for its higher education programmes2.

The award recognises our innovative work in the field of higher technical and professional education in partnership with employers.

THERE ARE A LOT OF COLLEGES OUT THERE THAT EMPLOY TEACHERS WHO DON’T HAVE INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE.

JASON EMSLEY

OUR EXPERT TUTORS WILL MAKE YOU JOB READY. At B&FC, our tutors are all experts in their field, with masses of industry experience to help you develop the skills needed for your future career. Our tutors know exactly how their subjects apply to the real world, what employers are going to expect from you and the unique skills set you’re going to need to be able to hit the ground running.

LOTS OF SUPPORT Our tutors provide lots of support to help you realise your full potential. Friendly and approachable, they will encourage you to ask for help when you need it. They also provide regular, constructive feedback, which allows you to remain on track towards your goals. When you start, you will be assigned your very own progress tutor, who will work with you to ensure your continued success.

Programme Leader for Uniformed Public Services Industry experience: 16 years serving in the Armed Forces, in places ranging from Northern Ireland to Kosovo and Iraq.

10

“After 16 years I decided I wanted to use my experience to train the next generation of our uniformed public services. The best thing about my job is the alumni and seeing the success stories of former students. I like to bring them back in to talk to our current students about what they’ve done, whether that’s being police officers, soldiers, paramedics. That’s the best thing for me, seeing the actual success and seeing them in industry.”

TRACY PEET

Senior Tutor – Beauty and Related Therapies Industry experience: 12 years working in a salon and time spent overseas.

“I decided to become a teacher because I have a real passion for my industry and I wanted to share that. My biggest inspiration was my own tutors - they gave me the drive, passion and determination to go out there and replicate what they did but with my own slant on things. Any teacher can teach from a textbook but it takes a real teacher with industry experience to share their expertise and give students a real flavour of what industry is all about.”

ANDREW DAVIES

Media Specialist Practitioner Industry experience: Former TV cameraman and editor, including a spell as Assistant Editor for BBC News.

“I got into teaching as I felt it would be rewarding to pass on my knowledge to students and nurture the next generation of professionals. Technology is constantly changing and I’m always thinking about practices and techniques and how I can pass them on to my students. There are a lot of colleges out there that employ teachers who don’t have industry experience. We would be doing you a disservice teaching you practices if we didn’t have industry experiences ourselves.”

Hear more from Andrew at YouTube/Andrew Davies – Learning That Works

GAVIN TYRELL

Programme Leader for Engineering Industry experience: A career with the Royal Signals working with IT and robotics then time spent in private industry setting up networks and programming robots.

“The College is committed to developing new programmes to support local industry and I want to be part of that. All of our lecturers have spent a lot of time in industry and that’s very important in your lessons. We can teach you things but we can also contextualise it to employment. So if I’m talking to you about robots, I can talk to you about how they’re used in industry and my experiences from it.”

THE APPRENTICES WHAT’S IT REALLY LIKE?

Jake Higson and James Hart are both apprentices at Keenan Chartered Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisers in St Annes. Both 20, they’ve already completed their Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) level 2 qualification and are now working towards their level 3. They work practically full-time, attending B&FC on Wednesdays from 9 till 3, when they work on the theory-side needed for their job.

JAKE HIGSON

“I did A-levels but then decided I’d rather be learning on the job and getting paid for it. It’s interesting and what we do at College links in really well – like the VAT topic is helping us understand what things are VAT-able. I want to do more qualifications next and progress up the ladder. Being an apprentice is great – the employer’s putting their faith in you so you need to give it your best.”

JAMES HART

“I went to sixth form but uni wasn’t for me. I’m good at maths so an accounting apprenticeship seemed like a good option. Some aspects are hard (like formatting the accounts in the right way) but I enjoy learning new things. And being in the workplace means we’re always a step ahead of our classmates at College. I want to become fully qualified and eventually open my own accountancy firm.”

THE EMPLOYER TONY KEENAN

“It’s a great scheme because it’s helping young people to get on to the career ladder by giving them a good grounding and a qualification in their chosen field. The calibre of apprentices has always been very high – with James and Jake, it was obvious they both wanted to learn and would get on with everyone in the office. Having the right attitude is really important.”

FULL-TIME STUDENTS CAN FAST-TRACK TO A GREAT CAREER

Full-time students who excel on their course and demonstrate they have the qualities employers want could ‘fast-track’ onto an apprenticeship. You’ll be doing the same qualification as before only now you’ll be on the career ladder and earning money.

OUR COURSES EXPLAINED LEVEL 2 AND 3 COLLEGE COURSES

LEVEL 3 COURSES

– a direct route to employment

– if your heart’s set on uni

These are highly practical, full-time courses that get you ready for employment in a range of career areas and show employers you’ve reached a nationally recognised standard. You don’t have to go straight into employment though - you might decide you want to stay on and do more qualifications.

Our pre-university courses suit young people who want to progress to university directly after their course, either at B&FC or at one of the many institutions across the UK. The qualification you will be studying is a level 3 course, which – just like A-levels - carries the required UCAS points to gain you entry to university.

Your GCSE results will determine which level you start at although in some subjects you’ll need to start at level 1 to gain the basic skills needed to move to the next level. Assessment is mostly coursework-based and might range from practical assessments to written assignments.

Level 3 qualifications are increasingly popular because, unlike A-levels, the qualifying work is assignment-based and spread over the course rather than crammed into one exam at the end. Also, universities value the career-related work experience that is naturally built into your course. Time spent in class is usually somewhere between 15 and 20 hours per week.

If you successfully complete a full level 3 qualification with us, we will guarantee you a place on one of our relevant degree programmes. Terms and conditions apply – for details go to our website.

APPRENTICESHIPS – start work straight away An apprenticeship gives you the best of both worlds: the chance to work towards a nationally-recognised qualification and get a foot on the career ladder at the same time. You’ll be earning a wage for doing a real fulltime job, learning real skills in a real work environment. Assessment mostly takes place in the workplace and you might also need to spend a small amount of time each week/ month at College. All apprentices will spend time developing their Functional Skills (English, Mathematics and ICT) as these will help you to succeed at work. You could progress to an advanced apprenticeship and a higher or degree apprenticeship/university course. We provide a high quality learning experience that is hard to find elsewhere.

IMPORTANT ESSENTIAL SKILLS If you achieve a grade 3 or below in your GCSE Maths and English exams you will have to do retakes in these subjects. This could delay your entry to university and/or employment.

BEGIN YOUR FUTURE CAREER On the following pages you’ll discover all the different course areas we offer together with information about the wide range of careers they lead to. As soon as you know what you want to do, fill in the application form at the back of this guide and return it to us.
