CASE STUDY

Oliver Canham “I needed to pursue something I’m passionate about…” —

Twenty-five year old Oliver Canham had a promising career in telesales but there was just one problem – he wasn’t enjoying it… “I knew it wasn’t for me and I thought I need to pursue something I’m actually passionate about, that I’m going to love doing for the next 20 years…” The ‘something’ turned out to be hospitality, which Oliver had quite a bit of experience in already. Keen to do a degree but not having the level 3 qualification he needed, he opted for B&FC’s Fast Track to Degree in Tourism – a full level 3 course condensed into just 24 weeks.

“It was tough at first, but the support from the tutors was brilliant. The workload is quite heavy but it’s definitely worth it; you just need to build a routine. And it got me ready to start my degree course, which I love.” “The fast-track course was actually developed with industry (with the people and companies I’ll be applying to work for), which is really good, because they know you’re gaining that relevant experience."

CAREER-FOCUSED COURSES FOR ADULTS

It’s never too late to achieve your dream career - especially when you study a career-focused course at B&FC. We offer help with funding, lots of ongoing support and timetabling that fits round your life. So what’s stopping you? We hear it all the time: “I’m too old”, “I can’t afford it”, “I’m not sure I’m up to it” or plain old “I haven’t got the time.” But when you look into it, you’ll realise that at B&FC none of the above apply because we’ve made it easier than ever for you to work towards the career you’re meant to have.

CASE STUDY

Carolyn Foy

“ It was just great to be doing something for me.”

Why studying at B&FC is easier than you think:

— Mum-of-four Carolyn Foy balanced family life and part-time work with studying an accounting course. She did so well that she went on to complete a degree with first class honours and is now training to be a teacher!

+ Courses to fit around your life – Most courses are just 1 or 2 days a week, with times to fit round the school run and evening options as well. + Support with study/IT skills – Don’t worry if you haven’t studied in a while. We’ll work with you to help you develop all the skills you’re going to need. + You’re not alone – Chances are you’ll find yourself in a class with people just like you, who haven’t studied in a while either.

“I loved it. I thought I’d be one of the oldest there and I wasn’t. So that was reassuring that other people were doing the same thing. I’d done something for my family for such a long time it was great just doing it for me.”

+ Help with funding your course – Don’t let finance put you off. There’s a whole range of support you could access – see the section below.

Help with fees and funding

Studying towards your dream career has never been more affordable. Most of our career-focused courses at all levels are FREE. If not, and you’re aged 19 or over studying a level 3 course, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan with nothing to pay upfront and no repayments till you’re earning at least £25,725 a year. We also offer the following non-repayable financial support: +£ 60 monthly bursary payment to help with course-related costs1 + Help with childcare costs1 + FREE 24/7 Blackpool Transport travel pass1 + FREE circular bus service linking our Bispham Campus with Poulton-le-Fylde + FREE healthy breakfast Eligibility applies – go to blackpool.ac.uk/support/financial-support-19

Nick Steel

“The College has a fantastic reputation for the arts!” —

With a background in digital design, web development and fabrication/engineering, Nick Steel had longed to develop a fine art practice of his own. When he was made redundant, it seemed the perfect time so he enrolled on B&FC’s Fine Art and Professional Practice. "I’m leaving here with qualifications, contacts, a fully functioning website and a social media following, not to mention a substantial portfolio and industry experience, which is all thanks to the College. You definitely get out what you put in.”

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER WITH A B&FC APPRENTICESHIP

ERIENCE EXP

If you’re 16 or above, an apprenticeship provides the best of both worlds: the chance to work towards a nationally-recognised qualification and develop your career at the same time.

How do they work?

Apprenticeships suit young people wanting to get a foot on the career ladder, earning a wage for doing a real full-time job. They also suit people who have already been working for a while, since they provide formal recognition of your knowledge and skills, helping you to move up the ranks. Assessment mostly takes in the workplace. You’ll be working for 4 days a week, with 1 day a week spent doing ‘off-the-job’ training, such as shadowing a colleague or developing your skills at College. Afterwards, you could progress to an advanced apprenticeship or to a degree or higher apprenticeship – see the next page for details.
