Welcome Last term our graduating students exhibited and performed not only in our own gallery and theatre but also in London and Manchester.

Student success Here at the School of Creative Arts we nurture talented students that go on to have a significant impact on the creative industries locally, nationally and internationally. We are therefore proud to announce some recent student successes.

This national profile provides our students with the essential industrial experience required to make the transition into employment within the Creative Industries. This new academic year brings a range of varied and exciting exhibitions, performances and creative opportunities that will both inspire and entertain. We hope that you will join us at the events listed in this guide and share the creative excellence that is the hallmark of the School of Creative Arts.

Two students picked up nominations in the internationally renowned D&AD Student Awards. Gary Corr from BA (Hons) Graphic Design, for his Batiste packaging design and Anthony Cassel from BA (Hons) Photography for his project on modern youth.


< Shabaneh Razvand, has recently graduated with a first in Acting. She has directed a play called ‘The League of St George’ which was a hit at the Edinburgh Festival. It is also being performed at the Pleasance London (25th -29th Sept) and is an NSDF award winner.

> Jack Grange, a recent graduate from BA (Hons) Photography, has been nominated in the prestigious Guardian Student Media Awards. A record number of applicants put themselves forward for this year’s awards, which were judged by leading industry figures including Alan Rusbridger, the editor-in-chief of the Guardian, and Lisa Smosarski, the editor of Stylist magazine. < Ryan Thorpe, a student on Extended Diploma Graphic Design, recently won the UK category for Chevrolet Young Creatives Competition, which rewards creativity and innovation in the field of applied arts. Ryan has already picked up a €1,200 prize and has now been entered into the international competition for a chance to win €4,000 and a work experience placement at a major London design agency.

Peep Graduate Showcase 2nd - 20th September University Centre Gallery The exhibition showcases work from our BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Illustration and BA (Hons) Photography programmes. Visitors can expect to see a selection of the best work from the emerging designers, artists and illustrators.

SEE Exhibition 30th September 22nd November

SEE Symposium 30th September 6pm-9pm University Centre Gallery SEE Organisation, in collaboration with national campaign No More Page 3, are hosting an exhibition and symposium event which interrogates the representation of women in the media. The exhibition features a host of artists whose work explores the ways in which we perceive and interact with the female body in contemporary culture. The symposium will bring together experts, authors and national charities and organisations to discuss issues relating to the deconstruction of the female body in the mass media and wider society.

Lucky Stiff 19th November 7.30pm 20th, 21st November 2.00pm and 7.30pm 22nd November 10.00am University Centre Theatre £7.50 / £5.00 A desperately unhappy shoe salesman spends his days and nights dreaming of how his life could be, little does he know that things are about to change forever! When a distant relative mysteriously passes away leaving six million pounds to his dear nephew, Harry is forced into a whirlwind adventure with a stalker, a glamorous showgirl, a jilted psychopath out for revenge, a mysterious Italian and a dead body in a wheelchair! Will it all work out in the end? Join the fun and find out why “It’s good to be alive!”.

Heritage Exhibition 2nd - 20th December University Centre Gallery The exhibition is a collaborative project between the School of Creative Arts at Blackpool and the Fylde College and Blackpool Council’s Heritage department. Students at the School of Creative Arts were granted access to various heritage collections held by Blackpool Council. Their responses and key inspirational pieces from the collections form the exhibition.

Oz 11th & 12th December 2.00pm and 7.30pm University Centre Theatre £5.00 / £4.00 Oz is a modern twist of Dorothy’s magical adventure. Dorothy is not happy with her life back home and so runs away. In doing so she finds herself literally swept up and transported to another world. The trials and challenges she faces in Oz enable Dorothy and her companions to find themselves and realise that there really is ‘no place like home’. A funny and enchanting musical.

Music Showcase 17th & 18th December 7.00pm University Centre Theatre £2.50 A showcase of original songs and a cover versions performed by our 1st and 2nd Year Level 3 Music students. The show will include a range of musical genres, from pop & rock to acoustic, indie, folk and R&B. The live music performance will be planned and promoted by the students, who will also work as live sound and recording engineers on the night providing a real experience of working in the industry. In addition, this event will promote the launch of the 2nd Years first CD. This will be available for sale and will contain music which has been recorded, mixed, produced and mastered as part of their course.

Earthquakes in London 10th & 11th December 2.00pm and 7.30pm Contact Theatre Manchester £7.50/£5.00 Earthquakes in London is an epic time machine of a play, travelling from 1968 to 2525 and back again. Time, scenes, and global issues constantly clash into each other; covering issues such as population explosion, worldwide paranoia and social breakdown. Growing up in this environment without a Mother and neglected by their Father, a misogynistic yet brilliant scientist, who predicts global catastrophe; three sisters struggle to navigate through their lives and loves. The strong influence of their Father’s opinions has taken a toll on the sisters and has dictated the paths they have taken in life. All of which illustrate some of the difficulties we all face in this modern age.
