CASE STUDY

Carolyn Foy

“ It was just great to be doing something for me.”

— Mum-of-four Carolyn Foy had always wanted a career in finance but her family had always come first. When her fourth child was getting ready to start school, she decided now was the time to put her career goals into action. “I found B&FC’s AAT course and I thought ‘this is perfect; this is what I want to do.’ And it was in school hours so it just fitted in.” “I loved it. I thought I’d be one of the oldest there and I wasn’t. So that was reassuring that other people were doing the same thing. I’d done something for my family for such a long time it was great just doing it for me.” Carolyn went on to complete levels 2 and 3 and then enrolled on our BA (Hons) Business and Financial Management - she graduated with a first this summer. “If you’re thinking of doing a course just come and speak to the tutors. I know people will say they’re fantastic but they really are. They will reassure you that it will fit in with the life you’ve got now and you don’t get that everywhere.”

“ The College opens doors for you” Former printer Steve Gleaves is proof it’s never too late to change careers. At 48, he’s graduated with a first class honours degree in Network Engineering and has since been appointed CPE Engineer at Daisy Communications Ltd. Studying just two days a week also meant he could carry on working and still fit in family commitments. “ It can be daunting at first but the tutors were so encouraging,” Steve says. “You’ve just got to take that first step. The College is also a CISCO Academy so I could get CISCO certified – it opens doors for you.”

The great thing about both tuition fee and maintenance loans is that you don’t need to pay anything back until you’re earning at least £25,7256 a year. As an example, if you’re earning £29,500 a year your monthly repayment comes to an affordable £28. Apply online at gov.uk/studentfinance

“ The thought of doing a degree really put me off because I didn’t realise all of the student finance that was in place. With having three children, I was worried we wouldn’t be able to provide for them like we had been doing. ADVANCE YOUR CAREER WITH A B&FC APPRENTICESHIP

ERIENCE EXP

If you’re 16 or above, an apprenticeship provides the best of both worlds: the chance to work towards a nationally-recognised qualification and develop your career at the same time.

How do they work?

Apprenticeships suit young people wanting to get a foot on the career ladder, earning a wage for doing a real full-time job. They also suit people who have already been working for a while, since they provide formal recognition of your knowledge and skills, helping you to move up the ranks. Assessment mostly takes place in the workplace. You’ll be working for 4 days a week, with 1 day a week spent doing ‘off-the-job’ training, such as shadowing a colleague or developing your skills at College. Afterwards, you could progress to an advanced apprenticeship or to a degree or higher apprenticeship – see page 26 for details.
