BAB 2017 EXHIBITION CATALOGUE

New Patterns in Architecture & Urbanism 18th - 24th December 2017.

Balkan Architectural Biennale

Balkan Architectural Biennale – BAB is an architectural-cultural platform: BALKAN UNLIMITED that seeks

to enlighten main topics in the field melting boundaries among Balkan countries connecting with global trends interdisciplinary. The overall topic of BAB 2017 is “Balkan Patterns in Architecture & Urbanism“. “Balkan Patterns in Architecture &Urbanism” seeks to enlighten various processes on Balkan territory that are related to urban development, urban planning, urban design and Architecture in whole, putting emphasis both on inner and outer crosscutting influences in theory and practice that are reflected in the city and regional development in Balkan and region. It brings together theorist, academics, researchers, professionals, practitioners and city developers to discuss future patterns and paths of urban and architectural development based on its historical development and wider integrative regional and global processes. BAB consists of multiple interconnected modules that seek to bound academia and practice in the field of architecture and urbanism aiming to make crucial qualitative changes in the field promoting tolerance, transparency and cultural synergy. Conceptor: dr Tatjana Mrđenović, BAB commissioner

Interior design is globally regarded as a part of a growing industry. However, it is important to pay attention that interior design is concerned as a category of luxury services market, so it is constantly subjected to ups and downs of the economy. On the other hand, this should not significantly affect and discourage professional designers, and including those who complete vocational schools in this area, because there are market and interest in this area at any moment. On the contrary, the current economic situation should not discourage them but it should inspire the further development, expansion of possibilities and researching information on various topics. Our goal is to gather as many professional designers as possible, as well as students of vocational studies, manufacturers, traders, importers, and others in this field. The participants should focus on presenting their views on the current situation in the Balkans in terms of the perception of interior design, production of furniture, design and industrial design. The participants are invited to exhibit their works in the form of presentations of performed interior projects and realized furniture. After collecting all the works, Expert Commission will select and award three best works. Jelena Nikolić, design exhibition curator

Although one may not be open to admit to it, virtually every practicing architect intimately believes that she has the right to her own system of interpretation of architecture. The constitution of a personal system of thinking is proving to be inevitable, in a time when all previous architectural doctrines can be considered as outdated. In everydayness of an ordinary life, behind every architectural doctrine, no matter how universal, the stern face of dogma will appear. The history of knowledge about architecture can be seen through the history of spatial concepts, wrote Bernard Tschumi in 1975. As an architect – designer and theoretician, Tschumi inquires the realm of material-built architecture and its conceptual environment. From the dialectic ambiguity of this relationship, he concludes that architecture, as a phenomenon, is always insufficient and incomplete. It is missing – either a concept or a realization. The incapacity of architecture to be complete, neither as a pure concept, nor as a pure realistic creation (and especially not as a mixture of them) is in a specific way territorialized in the frames of what we consider as the Balkans. Architects working on this territory are operatively facing the ambivalent incompleteness of architecture. The theme of the exhibition of the III Balkan Architectural Biennale New Patterns in Architecture and Urbanism offers a platform for reading the Balkan patterns of displaying immanent architectural insufficiency in the process between a specific social reality and a utopian dream. We call all of you architects – entrepreneurs, professionals, artists and warriors to share your perspective and show your work. dr Tatjana Stratimirović, architecture exhibition curator

DISCOVER THE CONCEPT STORY BEHIND THE CREATION THE GREEK DESIGNERS ® is the curated online platform to showcase globally the trends of contemporary Greek design, inspired by Greek history, culture and tradition. The mission is to make Greek identity widely known through timeless design products. Infinite Greek history, culture and tradition outline the story behind the contemporary creation and transformit into an Eternal Apparel with strong iDentity. Quality and high aesthetics of minimal, geometric, ethereal create an integrated experience for the customer not just to purchase, but to invest on an eternal apparel with a unique concept story. Launched in 2016 by Filiana Stefanakaki, architect and Dimitra Stefanakaki, landscape architect, THE GREEK DESIGNERS ® sparkled from the idea to interpret Greek timelessness into a synchronous design notion. ‘A creation, from architecture to product and fashion design, remains timeless as it comes up with a strong design concept and definitely Greece with a history of 3500 years is the leading storyteller on this’.

Čiviluk “štap&kanap” / Coat rack “stick&rope” Novi Sad, Srbija, 2017 / Novi Sad, Serbia, 2017 Coat rack “štap&kanap” (stick&rope) is one of four mobilier elements of “štap&kanap” furniture series, that besides coat rack includes chair, lamp and side table design, formed entirely by interconnections of two materials: wood and rope. Relying on element and material connection logic, in combination with function of every single element, design can be made even “by stick and rope”.

BALKAN ARCHITECTURAL BIENNALE 2017

BALKAN ARCHITECTURE PRESERVED IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

ACCOMPANYING EXHIBITIONS

The Balkan architecture has often been a subject of study, inspiration and lasting preoccupation of many architects in our area. Carrying a deep respect and love for the architectural heritage, as best illustrated by their work, some Serbian architects discovered the beauty of the rapidly dissapearing Balkan architecture, and forever saved it from forgetting. Starting from the fact that there are different types of protection and different levels of keeping the memory on the architectural tradition, through this exhibition we wanted to point out the architects who managed to preserve its value in different ways. Exhibition author: dr. Snežana Toševa Exhibition designer: Tijana Atanasijević

EMILIJAN JOSIMOVIĆ 150 YEARS OF THE FIRST URBANISTIC PLAN OF BELGRADE WITHIN THE TRENCH

The exhibition was made by architect Kristina Bunda and architect dr Ranka Gajić

“Through Urbanity to Integrity” – is the motto of the exhibition on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Belgrade’s (and Serbia’s) first urban plan. The exhibition contains two segments: 1 / Presentation of key ideas of the concept, which in 1867. first Serbian urbanist Emilijan Josimovic made for the transformation of part of Belgrade “within the trench”, which was in the form of mahals (historical center, today: Kosančić’s wreath, Dorćol and Kalemegdan) 2 / “Witnesses of the beginning of the XX century of Belgrade within the trench” - reconstructed facades of buildings in the zone of Kosančić’s wreath (realized in 2016-2017).

Curators: Mila Mojsilović Pavle Stamenović Maja Morošan OUTSIDE: is a regional architectural platform that focuses on new and experimental approaches to architecture. “OUTSIDE: A Second Look at competition Projects” was the first OUTSIDE’s exhibition held within the Balkan Architectural Biennale manifestation. This year’s exhibition, “OUTSIDE: Self Initiated Projects” will be held for the second time within the Balkan Architectural Biennale, at the Štab Gallery, on 22nd of December.
