A SET OF DATUM LINES MATERIALIZE AS FUTURE SUBWAY SYSTEMS TRAVELING TO THE MAJOR NEIGHBORHOODS SURROUNDING CLINTON HILL. AT THE POINT OF CONVERGENCE, A NEW EPICENTER IN DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN FORMS AROUND A HUB FOR TRANSPORTATION, A PLACE FOR INTERACTION, AND AN ARCHIVE OF KNOWLEDGE.

SITE: CLINTON HILL, BKLYN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF CLINTON HILL IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN AND IS HOME TO PRATT INSTITUTE. THE LOCATION OF THIS NEIGHBORHOOD BECOMES A QUESTIONABLE HOT SPOT AS BROOKLYN LOOKS TO WHAT THE FUTURE OF DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN COULD BECOME.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF CLINTON HILL AND THE SITE LOCATED ON MYRTLE AVENUE HOLDS HIGH VALUE IN THE NEXT 100 YEARS AS THE DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN DISTRICT PROSPERS AND EXPANDS. THIS FUTURE DOWNTOWN EXPANSION DISTRICT HAS ECONOMICAL INSTIGATORS SUCH AS PRATT INSTITUTE AND IS LOCATED IN AN OPPORTUNE AREA FOR TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS TO LINK AND CONVERGE.

TRANSPORTATION ANALYSIS THE SITE IS LOCATED IN AN AREA SURROUNDED BY ALL MEDIUMS OF TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS. THE NEIGHBORING DOWNTOWN DISTRICT HAS THE MOST DENSITY OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IN ALL OF BROOKLYN. IRONICALLY, THE ADJACENT CLINTON HILL AREA IS A CLEARING IN THE NETWORK OF TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS. THIS NEIGHBORHOOD HAS GREAT POTENTIAL FOR CONNECTIVITY TO TRANSPORTATION AS IT SLOWLY BECOMES APART OF THE GROWING AND MIGRATING DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN NEIGHBORHOOD.

THE FUTURE OF BROOKLYN HAS A GROWING NEED FOR TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS, INDEPENDENT OF THE SYSTEMS THAT SERVICE MANHATTAN, IN ORDER TO CONTINUE TO PROSPER AS A CITY OF ITS OWN. AN INDEPENDENT BROOKLYN SUBWAY SYSTEM WOULD REQUIRE A CENTRAL HUB THAT SERVES AS THE CENTRAL NODE OF ALL BROOKLYN SYSTEMS. BEING THAT CLINTON HILL IS A VIABLE NEIGHBORHOOD FOR THE EXPANSION OF DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN, A GENERAL CONSENSUS OF THE TRANSPORTATION ANALYSIS BECKONS FOR THE DESIGN AND PLANNING OF A CENTRAL SUBWAY HUB THAT IS THE HEART OF A BROOKLYN METRO SYSTEM.

SUB TERMINAL/CENTRAL LIBRARY AS A HUB FOR THE BROOKLYN METRO SYSTEM, THIS BUILDING ACTS AS A ROOM FOR THE CITY AND A SPACE FOR INTERACTION. STUDYING THE ADJACENCY AND RELATIONSHIP OF TWO COMPLEX AND SEEMINGLY OPPOSITE PROGRAM TYPES, THE TRAIN TERMINAL IS COMBINED WITH A NEW CENTRAL LIBRARY PROJECTED TO SERVE THE FUTURE GROWTH OF BROOKLYN. THESE TWO TYPICALLY DIFFERENT BUILDING TYPES ARE MERGED TOGETHER TO CREATE A CENTRAL PLACE OF INTERACTION WHERE SOME COME TO GO, AND SOME COME TO STAY.

DIAGRAM MODEL THE IDEA OF MASS AND VOID MATERIALIZES IN A LANGUAGE OF EXCAVATION AND DISPLACEMENT. THE ARCHITECTURAL EXPLORATION OF MATERIAL PORTRAYS MASS AS AN OBJECT ELEVATED ABOVE ITS PLACE IN THE GROUND, LEAVING A VOID IN THE GROUND TO BE USED BY THE PROGRAM OF THE SUBWAY SYSTEMS. THE DISPLACED MASS THAT STANDS ATOP THE CENTRAL LIBRARY, HOLDS CITY ARCHIVES WITHIN AND ACTS AS A PLAZA FOR RESIDENTS OF THE CITY ON TOP.

PLANS

THE BUILDING’S FORM IS DERIVED FROM THE SPACE CREATED BETWEEN THE FOUR PLANNED SUBWAY LINES AT THEIR POINT OF CONVERGENCE. THE NEW FOUR MAIN SUBWAY LINES PLANNED FOR BROOKLYN CONVERGE ON THIS SITE IN CLINTON HILL AND EXTEND OUTWARDS TOWARDS THE SURROUNDING MAJOR NEIGHBORHOODS. THE TWO BELOW GRADE LEVELS ARE ENCLOSED BY SUBWAY STOPS BY ALL FOUR SUBWAY LINES COVERING THE PERIMETER OF THE SUBTERRANEAN LEVELS.

LEVEL -2

THE TWO FLOORS SERVICING THE SUBWAYS ARE OPEN AND FREE IN PLAN. THE ONLY OBSTRUCTIONS TO THE SPACE ARE THE COLUMNS THAT EXTEND THE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDING. THE CENTRAL VOID TRAVELS THROUGH THE BUILDING AND IS ANCHORED TO THE BOTTOM FLOOR CREATING AN EXTERIORINTERIOR CONDITION ALLOWING FOR NATURAL LIGHT TO REACH TO THESE TWO SUBTERRANEAN LEVELS AS WELL AS TO EXHAUST HEAT AND NOISE FROM THE SUBWAYS. BOTH BOTTOM LEVELS ARE OPEN TO THE EXTERIOR CONDITIONS OF THE CENTRAL VOID.

LEVEL -1

N

THE GROUND LEVEL IS A PLACE OF INTERACTION AND CONVERSATION BETWEEN THE LIBRARY AND THE SUBWAYS. CONTAINING SPACES THAT SERVICE BOTH PROGRAM TYPES SUCH AS RESTAURANTS, CAFES, AND NEWS STANDS, THE CONVERGENCE OF THESE TWO DIVERSE PROGRAM TYPES HAPPENS WITH COMMON SPATIAL FUNCTIONS. THE CIRCULATION CAN BE IDENTIFIED AS THE ONLY CURVILINEAR ELEMENTS ON EACH FLOOR. THE PERFORATED STEEL FACADE PANELS CREATE THE ENTRANCE PERIMETER WHILE THE GLAZING IS INSET ON THE GROUND LEVEL.

LEVEL 0

THE MASS-VOID ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE IN WHICH THIS BUILDING IS COMPOSED, CARRIES ITSELF TO THE INTERIOR SPACES OF THE LIBRARY. ALL BOOKS ARE CONTAINED WITHIN ROOMS ON EACH FLOOR CREATING EXTERIOR SPACES ON EACH FLOOR TO BE PROGRAMMED WITH DESKS, SEATING, COMPUTER STATIONS, AND RESOURCES THAT PERHAPS WILL MATTER MORE THAN THE PHYSICAL BOOK IN THE COMING YEARS.

LEVEL 1

THE ORGANIZATION AND SPATIAL CONCEPTION OF THE ROOMS AND VOIDS FROM ARE ORGANIZED ON A PERSPECTIVE GRID THAT IS CREATED BASED UPON THE ANGLES OF THE SIDES. THE USE OF A PERSPECTIVE GRID DISORIENTS THE DEPTH PERCEPTION OF THE OCCUPANT, GIVING THE SPACE A SCALELESS QUALITY AND THUS CREATING A CLUSTERED, LABYRINTH LIKE CONDITION THAT PROVIDES A SENSE OF PRIVACY.

LEVEL 2

THE COLUMNS THAT EXTEND THE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDING ARE CLAD IN PERFORATED STEEL MATERIAL THAT CREATES THE PERIMETER FACADE PANELS AS WELL. THE COLUMNS CONTAIN ALL SERVICES NECESSARY FOR THE BUILDING INCLUDING ELECTRICITY, HVAC, AIR INTAKE, AND PLUMING. THE PERFORATED CLADDING OF THE SERVICE COLUMNS ALLOWS FOR AIR TO CIRCULATE AND EASY ACCESSIBILITY TO SERVICES.

LEVEL 3

N

AS THE FLOORS PROGRESS, THE ENCLOSED SPACES PROGRESSIVELY BECOME VERTICAL VOIDS THAT CREATE DOUBLE HEIGHT, OR TRIPLE HEIGHT SPACES IN THE ROOMS ON THE FLOORS BELOW. THESE VOIDS ARE ENCLOSED IN GLAZING THAT ALSO MAY ENCASE COLUMNS IN CERTAIN SPACES TO SERVICE THE LARGE VERTICAL SPACES.

LEVEL 4

THE ROOF TERRACE ACTS AS GROUNDS FOR THE PUBLIC. IT BECOMES A PLAZA SPACE THAT SERVES THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY AND OCCUPANTS OF THE LIBRARY. THE SLIGHT TOPOGRAPHY OF THE ROOF FACILITATES WITH DRAINAGE AND CREATES A LEANING SLOPE TOWARDS SEATING AT THE PERIMETER OF THE BUILDING, ALLOWING FOR VIEWERS TO WATCH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CITY AND THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS.

MATERIAL BUILDING SECTION THE SECTION BEGINS TO SHOW THE SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP OF ROOMS AND COLUMNS, AND THE INTERIOR VOID THAT TRAVELS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

FACADE MODEL THE MODEL SHOWS THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE TOP FLOOR ARCHIVE TO THE ABOVE GRADE FLOORS BELOW. THE DOUBLE HIGHT ARCHIVE SPACE IS CLAD IN A COPPER GLAZING THAT APPEARS OPAQUE FROM THE EXTERIOR, READING AS A MASSIVE OBJECT. THE SHIFTING PANELS THAT VARY FROM FLOOR TO FLOOR CLADDING THE LIBRARY SPACE IS A PERFORATED METAL MATERIAL THAT IS FILLED WITH ABSORPTIVE INSULATION. THE ABOVE GRADE LIBRARY FLOORS ARE GLAZED WITH A CURTAIN WALL THAT EXTENDS BEYOND THE TOP LIBRARY FLOOR WITH THE COPPER GLAZING TO ENCLOSE THE ARCHIVE SPACE.
