Everyday, the Emperor penguin colony lives life’s many small affairs. For the adults, fishing and caring for their young. For the little ones, playing and learning. Gem, the lively youngster, liked to climb up the hills with family and friends, wishing to reach the skies.

“What’s beyond the ocean?” she asked. “Incredible landscapes, places and animals,” said dad. “But also trouble, danger and loneliness,” said mum. “And on the other side of the Earth, what animal lives there?” asked Gem.

“A huge, white, strong, seal eater... the polar bear!” answered mum. “Ha ha ha, mum and her fears!” laughed daddy. “We really don’t know. No penguin has travelled to the North Pole before.” “I want to meet a Polar Bear!” exclaimed Gem.

Time passed, but her wish remained: Gem wanted to explore the Earth when she had grown up. The farewell was sad and the first steps really, truly hard. Dad and mum hoped they would soon celebrate Gem’s return. Full of pride for their daughter, they couldn’t restrain the biggest of grins.
