2018 promises to be an exciting year for all Bablake students, especially those sitting public examinations and relishing exciting options beyond A level or GCSE. We look forward to assisting all our students with guidance for these decisions.
2018 BABLAKE CAREERS CONVENTION
Our biennial Careers Convention takes place on Thursday 1 February between 6pm and 8.30/ 9pm. This is a chance for pupils from our 2nd year upwards, together with their parents, to talk to a broad range of delegates -‐ many of whom will be former pupils – about an exciting array of options after GCSE and/or A levels. We are delighted to be able to confirm the attendance of a broad range of universities, including Aberystwyth, Birmingham, Birmingham City, Coventry, Exeter, Falmouth and Huddersfield. We will also have the organiser of International Education week and information about apprenticeship schemes. We are still finalising the list of professions represented at this event and it would be very much appreciated if every Bablake family could p ersuade their current employer (or workforce) to provide a delegate for the event. Next week, we will go live with the list of d elegates already confirmed, but please n ote our cast list will be expanded up to Tuesday 30 January. ISSUE 8 of our Newsletter -‐ a CAREERS CONVENTION special -‐ will be published on Wednesday 31 January and, of course, we will issue a final programme on the evening itself. [We would ask the Upper Sixth to make every effort to attend and network on the evening despite it being Mock Exam week.]
KELLY’S PRODUCTIVITY TIPS
The Guardian asked interior designer and Dragons’ Den star Kelly Hoppen to identify how she was able to boost her productivity. Here is her list: • Play to your strengths • Declutter • Write a list • Self-‐belief is crucial • Take your time • Share your vision • To be a leader, you need to listen For pupils approaching decisions about options for GCSE and A level in particular and those sitting public examinations this year, some of Kelly’s tips may strike a chord, but don’t be afraid of creating your own list. Knowing the subjects you enjoy and excel at is very important, while taking time to assess pros and cons will help ensure intelligent decision-‐making. For those revising, there is no need to panic at a daunting to-‐do list; prioritising a few items daily/ weekly will help chip away at this list. Kelly Hoppen knew she could achieve her goal but needed people to support her vision. With guidance, Bablake pupils will also reach their targets. FEEDBACK SESSION 9: Joel White – Trainee pilot We thank former pupil Joel White (Class of 2009) for an excellent, insightful talk about his ab initio training as a pilot at CAE Oxford Aviation Academy (caeoaa.com/) and wish him well for the final stages of his course. SESSION 10: The Perfect Covering Letter and CV Bablake’s Careers Department has led practical workshops with groups of 5th Year p upils who took part in our 2017 CV Challenge. Those pupils will be able to collect their individual applications next week -‐ advice will b e added on how to improve any future submissions.
