PERFECT PAIR

Mother of two SAMANTHA VARVEL was originally unsure of her two young children (Peter and Kit) sharing a room, but both the outcome and the space itself have proven to be surprisingly sweet.

THE DESIGN

“Our nursery is such a special room to us and is shared by our two young children. When we moved into our home just over a year ago, we were preparing to welcome our baby daughter Kit, and I wanted to create a space that was gender-neutral with all the colors of the rainbow that could adapt as they grew and shared the space,” says Varvel. “Right now we have two cribs in the room, with the recent addition of Kit’s mini crib, and we will soon be swapping one out for a “big boy bed!”

“I searched high and low for the right wallpaper and deliberated endlessly (selecting a wallpaper can feel a bit like committing to marriage), but ultimately chose this classic hummingbird pattern by Cole & Son, which set the tone for the rest of the decor. The green trim was a last minute decision, but really pulled everything together in combination with the green-and-white gingham of the roman curtains. I love a mix of old and new and wanted to be sure to incorporate some sentimental pieces like the antique florals handed down from my mom that we hung above the changing table, as well as a framed needlepoint alphabet that was gifted to us by a childhood family friend.”

THE DETAILS

“It’s the little details that make a room feel special and there are a few things in this space that add that perfect touch of whimsy. The paper foxglove floral from Brooklyn-based artist “The Green Vase” is a favorite of mine. The mirror from Fleur Home was custom color-matched to the wallpaper and I’m in love with the little scalloped detail. And of course, we needed a few good touches of wicker: the Matilda Goad rattan lampshade is placed on a simple Pottery Barn floor lamp base, the side

table is a steal from Urban Outfitters, and the Ballard Design scalloped storage baskets are a must for chic toy storage!”

THE INSPIRATION

“Just like any nursery, ours has seen endless hours of bedtime routines, diaper changes, and night feedings. I was so nervous that having two babies sleep in the same room would be a disaster with them waking each other up, but it has not been the case! We’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well they’ve adapted to sharing and it’s adorable (and hilarious) seeing how they interact when we check in on them from the baby monitor. I always shared a room with my sister growing up, so I love that they are doing the same.”
