Spaces designed for the family to enjoy should feel friendly and stand the test of time. Susana Simonpietri, Creative Director of NYC-based design studio Chango & Co , shares what to keep in mind as you plan.

Get Low

When designing a space for the whole family, we like to furnish rooms with pieces that are lower to the ground so that you can interact with your kids more. This makes the room a lot friendlier to people of all ages!

Star Power

Choose a design focal point when furnishing a kid's space. This could be a fun rug with a pattern, bold wallpaper, or anything else that can be a “big moment” in the room. Start from there, and choose the rest of your decor around this.

Smart Fabrics

To design with longevity in mind, stick to neutral colors and fabrics for bigger pieces of furniture and paints. Bring color in through fun accessories or other easy pieces that can be swapped out over time such as pillows, art, or even rugs.

Time Test

Focus on durability. Use performance fabrics where you can to help with stains and upkeep. The last thing you want to be worrying about is how to keep a space tidy that is meant to get messy.

For the Kids

Embrace kids' preferences and interests. For example, if they love rainbows, there are ways to incorporate this into a space that still feels sophisticated and beautiful.
