Wilson’s Home Timber and Hardware has relocated from its 100-year-old Grant Street store to a new, purpose-built facility at 1 South Maddingley Rd, Bacchus Marsh this weekend. Owners Jamie and Doug Wilson (pictured above) said the new store would offer customers better and easier access, and a larger range of stock. “Our customers will no longer be stuck in the gridlock of Grant Street and they can enjoy a larger range, easy trailer access and more convenience because we now have the timber yard and hardware store in the one place,” Jamie Wilson said. Doug Wilson said the new hardware store was twice the size and there were 40 customer car parks. The brothers said the hardware store on Grant Street was approximately 100-years-old and it was a “bit sad” to leave because they grew up at the store. Doug said JC Bennett opened the store just after World War One and JC’s nephew, Lionel Simpson, had served in the Great War with Doug’s grandfather
Jimmy Wilson. “That’s how the Wilsons came to Bacchus Marsh. Jimmy and Lionel were both builders and built a lot of homes around Bacchus Marsh,” he said. “Our family bought the hardware store during the 1950s and it became JF Wilson and Son. Dad (Doug senior) passed away in 1997 and we were going to close the store down and lease it out, but Jamie and I decided to give it a go.” The brothers continued their father and grandfather’s legacies and went on to purchase three acres from Oupan Resources in 2009, turning it into a timber yard in 2013 to complement the hardware business. Jamie said they had looked for 10 years to find an appropriate site in Bacchus Marsh and it was difficult to find something central because the land was highly sought after. “We’ve built the whole lot here from scratch,” he said. “We’ve hired extra staff for the move and there will be new ongoing positions.” Jamie and Doug said while they would be open for business on Monday, October 5, a grand opening would be held in early November.

The Bacchus Marsh couple celebrated their tenth anniversary together last week, have three beautiful children and own a block of land they plan to build their dream house on, however current government legislation means they can’t celebrate their commitment to each other with a wedding. Peter said marriage equality was the new civil rights movement sweeping the world, and Australia was lagging behind its counterparts Ireland, England, the United States and New Zealand by continuing to discriminate against same-sex marriage. “Why should we not be treated the same as everyone else? There were marriages before there were religions.” Trevor said: “Everybody knows it’s inevitable. It’s purely about equality. There are countries that have brought it in by legislation, and countries that have brought it in by popular vote. We had the opportunity to get married in America and New Zealand, but we wanted to have our family and friends celebrate with us. We know the Bacchus Marsh community is completely behind us as well. “ Local photographer Mick Davson wants to see the legislation changed in favour of marriage equality. On July 8 he pledged on his facebook page, facebook.com/MickDavsonPhotography, his photographic services for free to the first same-sex couple to book their wedding with him. Peter and Trevor were that couple. Mick said: “There was talk about what if businesses discriminated against same-sex marriages, and I’m in the business of weddings. I contacted Liza from White Lux Photography and she came on board. The package would usually cost $3500 but we wanted to put our money where our mouths were.” “This is about joining hands with the cause and the people. Somehow marriage equality is political and it’s not about politics. Somehow it’s about religion, but it’s not religious. We thought we would do something tangible to show our support. “I don’t believe in a plebiscite as such. We have already elected people and it’s up to them to go out in the street and talk to their electorate and take those opinions back to the government. We pay those people to seek out our views in the normal course of their employment. It saves $130 million if they do what they’re paid to do.” Local marriage celebrant Dudley Raine has also pledged his support and

will preside over the future ceremony. “It’s a celebration of people’s lives, their loves, their futures and their families,” he said. “I’d already met Peter at a soiree about how to prepare as a celebrant for same sex marriage. When I saw Mick’s offer I thought Peter and Trevor were a brilliant couple to put their hands up.” Dudley said changing the legislation would be as simple as changing the “monitum (section 46)” of the marriage act from man and woman to two people. He said holding a plebiscite after the next election was just a way for the government to “stall it”. Mick said Carlie Taylor of CJ Sweet Treats had also offered to make a wedding cake valued at $500 for the ceremony. “This is a statement for what we believe the majority of Australians want,” he said. “We’re ready to go as soon as it becomes legal.”

The reservoir is in danger of drying up after low winter rainfall and currently sits at five per cent capacity, with only 373 megalitres remaining, according to Barwon Water. Barwon Water general manager infrastructure services, Paul Northey, said rainfall at the reservoir was 62 per cent below average in June, about average in July and 42 per cent below average in August. “In September, 42mm of rain was recorded – about 40 per cent below the long term average of 68mm,” Mr Northey said. “This time last year the reservoir was 12.5 per cent full; it’s currently at five per cent capacity.” He said Bostock Reservoir’s primary purpose was to supply water to greater Geelong and any releases from the reservoir were environmental flows to ensure compliance with Barwon Water’s licence to take water. Ballan angler John Montesano said the less water there was, the harder it was to catch fish, although there had been some recent reports of nice trout being caught at Bostock. “I haven’t had any luck,” he said. Thousands of trout and salmon were released into Bostock Reservoir in recent years through government re-stocking programs. According to a government spokesperson, more recent fish stocking programs involving thousands of brown trout were diverted from Bostock Reservoir into Pykes Creek Reservoir because of Bostock’s low water levels. Pykes Creek Reservoir is just over half full. Mr Northey said when Bostock Reservoir will refill was entirely dependent on rainfall. According to Barwon Water records, Bostock Reservoir got down to 0.6 per cent capacity in October 2007. For more information visit

‘The Welcome Mat’ exhibition features a large mat made up of 150 small squares woven by basketmakers, weavers and fibre artists. The idea for the project began in Bacchus Marsh earlier this year at the Australasian Basketry and Fibre Arts gathering. The project, led by Jodie Goldring, was given the name of ‘The Welcome Mat’ and a theme of belonging. Ms Goldring said: “Throughout this project the theme of belonging was explored by developing appropriate connections to community. One aspect was to let people in the Moorabool Shire know about a national event that was happening in their shire and to offer them an opportunity to build skills.” Moorabool Shire helped fund three community basketry workshops where squares were made and collected to add to the Welcome Mat. A callout was also made to participants of the National Basket and Fibre Gathering 2015 to be part of the project. The completed artwork will hang at the Lerderderg Library during the month of October, and be exhibited in Ballarat at the Backspace Gallery from Thursday 17 March – Sunday 3 April, 2016.

My role in the lead up to the Grand Final has been much the same as the previous few games. There isn’t a whole lot us injured boys can do but it has been important for us to support the playing group as they prepare for the match and try to keep things as normal as possible. The club is really excited at the chance to play in the Grand Final, as are the members and fans, which has shown through their support during the week. There is definitely a buzz amongst the boys but all involved are staying focused because there is obviously a job to do.
Simmo has been really good in the build up. He’s highlighted the importance of soaking up the week and enjoying it but he has also tried to keep it very normal making sure the boys are ready to go come game day.
Realising it’s something that I wanted to do for a long time.
I’ll be watching from the stands with the other boys who won’t be playing as well as family and friends of the players.
Recovery is coming along well. I had my first run in 10 weeks on Monday and I’m just trying to build back up my leg strength. All is on track and I can hopefully join in on day 1 of pre season which would be nice.
I think I’m most looking forward to us kicking our first goal, just to hear the crowd, I think it will really sink in then that we are playing in a Grand Final.
Yes, we have two weeks off over Christmas so that is a great chance for me to come home and spend some quality time with family and friends before heading back to Perth and getting stuck back into some tough training.

The not-for-profit food bank’s food drive called ‘Tin in a Bin’ aims to collect Christmas items including jellies, puddings, softdrinks, tinned hams, shortbread biscuits and more to put together Christmas hampers for those doing it tough over the festive season. The Neighbour’s Place coordinator Jackie Tabone said volunteers would be out in front of Foodworks with a collection bin on Friday, October 16 and November 12 from 10am to 2pm. “We put together about 100 hampers to go out for Christmas,” she said. “It’s not much but it’s something little we can give back, especially for the kids.” She said the numbers of people who visited The Neighbour’s Place were on the rise and indicated that more and more people and families were struggling financially. “We’re not government funded so we rely on local businesses and grants to help keep us going.” She said if people were unable to get to Foodworks for the drive, they were always welcome to drop donations off at The Neighbour’s Place, 77 Main St, Bacchus Marsh. Opening hours are Monday/Wednesday/ Friday, 9.30am - 2.30pm, and during school holidays from 9.30am to 12pm.

U3A (University of the Third Age) is holding an inaugural Seniors Expo for mature people on October 9. U3A secretary Mazi McBurnie said: “It gives people the opportunity to see what’s available, particularly following retirement. Sometimes people get a little bit lost when they retire with what they want to do.” “The expo will showcase about 18 different things they can do. It’s about showing people what’s available and how they can meet new friends. They don’t have to be old,” she said. She said more than 18 different groups would be on hand to show people what was available. Classes run by U3A include water colour painting, quilting, gardening, radio players, mah-jong, geneology and more. Representatives from Bellbrook Gardens, Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre, Bacchus Marsh Senior Citizens, Probus mixed and ladies, and a garden show group will add even more variety to the expo. Bacchus Marsh U3A president Adrian Rowell said U3A was an international, not-for-profit organisation that promoted activities for the over 60s. “The aim of U3A is not only to provide activities which are stimulating and which provide opportunities to learn new skills or develop interests, but there is also socialisation aspect and the chance to share activities and to associate with people who have similar interests,” he said. The Seniors Expo will be held at the James Young Room, Lerderderg Library, on Friday, October 9 from 10am to 4pm. Devonshire tea will be available for $2.

Owner Peter Crotty said all of the visitors to the caravan park comment about the friendly, warm greeting they receive from park manager Janet Mitchelson at reception. “Most travellers comment on how well kept the park is, how clean the amenities are and also the quietness of the park,” he said. “We pride ourselves on going the extra mile to make people feel at home and welcome so that they are happy to recommend the park to fellow travellers and to return another day.” Peter and Christine Crotty have owned the park for 18 years and are big contributors to the Bacchus Marsh community. Peter said often caravan parks were flat, expansive areas that lacked character, however Bacchus Marsh Caravan Park was located on undulating land with winding pathways through manicured gardens. “The park winds around the hillside creating different levels and areas for caravaners and campers alike. At the heart of the park, adjacent to the laundry is a large grassed area fringed by trees. Here you often see travellers enjoying the sunshine ready for a chat while hanging out their washing and soaking up the warm and homely atmosphere,” he said. Bacchus Marsh Caravan Park has an array of powered and non-powered sites suitable for larger and smaller caravans and camper vans. There are grassed sites, and gravel sites with mats, totalling 30 powered sites with several unpowered sites and a camping area. The park offers free WiFi so travellers are able to keep in touch with relatives and friends. There are two free gas barbecues for travellers and a very well set up laundry. There is a basketball court and play equipment area for the children to keep them entertained and, for those travelling with a treasured family pet, the park has pet friendly powered and unpowered sites. Peter said the thing he loved most about owning a caravan park was meeting people from all walks of life. “We have met wonderful people, some travelling through and some regularly returning. Hearing their stories can be both interesting and inspiring.” Bacchus Marsh Caravan Park is located at 26 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. Owner Wendy Quinlan (pictured above) said she opened the boutique store five and-a-half years ago because she felt like there was a need in Bacchus Marsh for another boutique store that specialised in smart, casual everyday wear for women aged thirty and over. “These are styles you can dress up and dress down, depending on the occasion,” she said. “I have tried to maintain a price point where most items are under $100.” The comfort of the fashion is also reflected in the comfortable ambience of the shop. Loujo has a warm, earthy atmosphere that invites you to relax, take your time and enjoy the shopping experience. Wendy said people always commented on how there were lots of different areas and always something new to find. “I love the ambience here, it’s very comfortable. I haven’t used any shop fittings. It’s got an earthy, eclectic feel.” Loujo carries a large range of ladies wear, accessories including handbags and jewellery, and some giftware. Wendy said she generally carried three or four sizes for each style and once it’s gone, it’s gone, making room for new stock. “Every week we have new stock coming in. Fashion isn’t one particular trend. It’s about looking and feeling good, but in comfortable clothing.” Loujo is located at 189 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh and 2/28 Aitken Street, Gisborne. I’ve just picked up a precious portrait of my two pooches Louie and Halle (pictured right) from What Knot’s framers and I’m still rubbing my eyes in awe. Local artist Kellie Pietrzykowski (below right) outdid herself when she tackled these two. She worked from photographs I supplied and her attention to detail is simply incredible. Their eyes look like mirrors! And the frame that What Knot’s helped me choose sets off their colouring just perfectly. There’s a lot to be said for shopping local for goods and services. The customer service is second to none and you know you’re not just a number. Wilson’s Home Timber & Hardware (story page 3) have moved into a new purpose built hardware store this weekend. I doubt there is a single person in Bacchus Marsh who hasn’t shopped at this store. The hardware store on Grant Street has been in business for 100 years, and the Wilson family has owned it for about 60 of those years. True family businesses are becoming rarer than hen’s teeth with the rise and rise of multi-national corporations and franchises. Family businesses that are expanding and growing are even rarer. Wasn’t it Kerry Packer who said the first generation starts the business, the second generation grows the business and the third generation loses the business? Doug and Jamie Wilson are third generation but I’ve no doubt that their father and grandfather would’ve been extremely proud of the risks they’ve taken and the decisions they’ve made.
