STOLEN VEHICLES RECOVERED
hat is the question being asked by Atlasville residents. We were all set to heap praise, which we still do, on Boksburg North SAPS for their timely arrest of three suspects, as per their Press Release dated 1 December 2011. Following the recent spate of incidents in our suburb, we were pleased to hear that as a result of investigations by Detectives they had managed to arrest three suspects which were linked to crime in our suburb. While this press release only mentioned the Detectives involved, we believe that other members of SAPS also deserve praise, such as our Sector Police who patrol our suburb daily. Whilst we cannot mention them all by name, a big ‘THANK YOU’ goes to all of you from the Community of Atlasville. BUT WHAT WENT WRONG? We were dismayed to learn that on Saturday evening, 3 December 2011, the same three suspects managed to escape from their holding cell. We ask ourselves, ‘How was this possible?’, ‘What kind of security is there at the Police Station?’ and ‘Did they have inside help?’ There has been much speculation about what happened at Boksburg North Police

Station, and we were advised that a Press Release would be forthcoming on Monday 5 December 2011. At the time of The PCN going to print, no Press Release had been received. The residents of Atlasville, quite naturally, now feel aggrieved by this turn of events, particularly as no satisfactory explanation has been received from the Station Commander, Col Van Nieuwenhizen, whose only statement we are aware of is that he ‘has asked the community of Atlasville to please be alert and apologises for the escape of the suspects’. The least we should expect from the SAPS is that a full investigation into the suspects’ escape has taken place and that a full report back will be given to the residents of Atlasville, who view this incident in an extremely serious light. How long can it take to investigate this incident? It happened on Saturday evening. Surely by now, if not sooner, there should have been some kind of explanation – good, bad or otherwise. Kevin Froneman, Chairman of Atlasville Community Precinct has advised The PCN that it is his intention to lodge an official request, in writing, with the Boksburg North Station Commander, on behalf of Atlasville residents, asking for a full explanation, in writing, regarding this unsatisfactory situation.

Stop Killing our Paramedics

I
n the dark of the night and light of day; in rain, wind or sunshine and no matter what the circumstances, our paramedics are there when needed – and most often at a risk to their own lives. “I did not see them”, “The guy suddenly stopped in front of me!” These are the type of excuses that we hear when paramedics are injured or killed during a secondary collision that could have been avoided. Not only is it our duty to avoid headlines such as “Four Medics Killed in Horror Crash”, but it is the duty of the public to take care before there is a chance for such a headline. The festive season is usually known by many professionals in the emergency medical industry as the “silly season”. People drink and drive, speed, and sometimes just drive recklessly without any regard to the people around them. Sadly it is a fact that emergency workers will be called out to various types of accidents and medical emergencies during this period and be placing their lives at risk to save yours. Recently a paramedic was killed and two others critically injured when a truck crashed into the initial accident scene. Warning systems and road blocks could not stop the truck from crashing into the chaotic scene, causing a secondary collision that changed the lives of many on that scene. While it might not show, a paramedic always has the thought that it might have been the last time he greeted his wife or children before rushing out to save the trapped woman in her car on the highway. It is with this thought in mind that ER24 would like to call upon every single person not to kill our paramedics. A secondary collision can happen in the blink of an eye, no matter what type of precaution or speed calming measures we put in place. Paramedics advise on the following: • Do not stop at the scene of a collision to have a look, even if you think it is safe. • Slow down well before the scene and follow the demarcated lanes to guide you pass the collision, concentrating on the traffic around you. • Ensure that you can still hear ambient sounds over and above your car radio. There are many different emergency warning sounds (sirens) that will indicate that emergency vehicle approaching. Lower your speed and identify the direction from which the emergency vehicle is approaching. Allow right of way to the emergency vehicle without endangering yourself or other road users around you. • Emergency lights might be “attractive”, but do not gaze at the scene as you pass through it. You might inadvertently drive into the actual scene and collide with the emergency workers on the scene. • Be aware of debris lying on the road. Although emergency workers try and clear the scene as soon as possible, small items might still lie on the road’s surface. Debris might be shot up and hit emergency workers on the scene. • A collision scene is very unpredictable and you can never know when a fire may erupt or an unforeseen event will take place. It is therefore important that motorists keep their following distance to avoid a collision with the car in front of them when they suddenly stop. • Paramedics strongly advise against stopping at the scene to show their children the collision. • When a Medicopter lands at the scene of a collision, all traffic will be stopped in both directions. Vehicles trying to push through on the side might collide with emergency workers or the Medicopter itself. Our paramedics are precious to us and we can place no value on their lives. It is only with your help that we know we can render the best possible care to a patient on the scene without the worries that a vehicle will smash into you or your colleague. Successes keep rolling in for Crystal Park
I
n the early hours of Wednesday 30 November 2011 an African male driving a blue VW Golf stopped at the Shell Garage in Pretoria Road, Petit. The attendant duly put petrol in the vehicle and before he could collect the payment, the man drove off. This was reported to our Control Room and luckily a note of the vehicle’s registration number had been taken. All patrol vehicles in the vicinity were given the lookout for the vehicle in question. The hunt was on. Crystal Park SAPS were also informed. After about half an hour one of our patrol vehicles spotted the vehicle and a chase
ensued. With the assistance of Crystal Park SAPS, the vehicle was stopped on the corner of Blinkpan Street and the suspect was arrested and detained at Crystal Park Police Station, where he was charged with theft of fuel. Tryna Wolmarans, Communications Officer at Crystal Park Police Station advised that following this arrest, the Detectives on the case carried out some quick investigation work, leading to the arrest of a second person. It was further revealed that the Golf in question was sought on a Boysens VIS enquiry, having been stolen earlier this year. The two suspects appeared in court on Thursday 1st December 2011. Once again well done to all involved in this success. This just goes to show what can be achieved when we all work together.

Successful Recovery of stolen vehicles In the early hours of Friday evening, 2 December 2011, an Isuzu bakkie was stolen from Carnival Mall. The vehicle was equipped with Tracker who immediately tried to trace the vehicle. A signal was being received in the Rynfield area but they were unable to pinpoint the exact location of the vehicle due to darkness. It was then suspected that perhaps the tracking unit had been removed, which was why there was no movement on the vehicle. Determined to locate the missing bakkie, efforts were renewed on Monday 5 December 2011, which bore fruitful results. Amiel Maritz, Vice Chairman of Crystal Park CPF, called for assistance and Juan Strauss and Andries Strydom of EMPD’s K9 Unit answered the call. Lo and behold the bakkie was found, parked in
the garage of a unit in a complex in Rynfield, where the resident was arrested. Well done to Amiel Maritz for not giving up, as well as the officers from the K9 Unit for their assistance. Also on Monday 5 December 2001 two stolen trucks were recovered in the Bonaero Park area as a result of investigations by Captain van den Berg and his team of the Crystal Park Detective Branch. Unfortunately there were no suspects around, the vehicles having been abandoned. While looking around the area, an abandoned trailer was also discovered, which it turned out was hijacked last week on the N12. Needless to say the trailer was now empty. Well done once again for all the efforts put in to locating these stolen vehicles.

Early Christmas Party for Children’s Homes
O
n Saturday 3 December 2011 over 200 children from various Children’s Homes were treated to an early Christmas Party, held at Lakeside Mall, Benoni, thanks to the efforts of Audrey Todd of Sector 2 CPF, as well as the team from Lakeside Mall itself and staff from the Benoni City Time¬¬s. The kids were able to play on jumping castles, carnival games as well as have their faces painted. Candy floss was in abundance. Dragon Karate School gave a demonstration on self defence and some of the children were able to participate. The children were treated to a light lunch and then the big moment arrived, when Father Christmas was escorted to the venue by bikers from the Harley Davidson Club. Then the cheers and excitement really started as Santa gave out sweets to all the children, before giving out presents to each and every one of them. A very big ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone involved in making this day a success. The amount of time and energy it must have taken to organise this event was well worth it, to see the looks of joy and happiness on all the children’s faces.
Benoni SPCA is gearing itself for a busy time ahead as people go away on holiday and leave their pets behind unattended. At this time of the year the SPCA finds itself full to overflowing with abandoned pets. Pets should be considered one of the family and treated as such. Please don’t be cruel this year. In preparation for the Festive Season, the Benoni SPCA has compiled a ‘Wish List’ and we appeal to the community to assist. WISH LIST FOR DOGS Food – tinned and dry Beds and blankets Collars, leashes, running chains Kennels Shampoo and dip Stainless steel bowls for water and food. For guidance, as many as possible, as they are always in need of replacing. If you can give one bag of dog food per kennel, then it would be marvellous. The collars and leases are often passed on to disadvantaged people, and we would love ones which are in good condition but you no longer need. FOR CATS Food – tinned and dry Beds and blankets Litter trays Toys Stainless steel bowls Our cats need toys to stimulate them, as they become distressed just sitting around. OTHER NEEDS Cages for transportation of cats and small dogs Disposable gloves and towels for our clinic. The INBOX As a founder member of CMS, I am sure there are very many fellow members who, like me, are finding the incessant noise of false alarms intolerable. As doubtless you know, these are caused mostly - and often more than once daily - by faults in the domestic system (which do not get attended to, or reported to CMS), external beams which are broken by animals left in their path, cats jumping in and out of windows left open, faulty electric fences, etc. Not only is this an unacceptable intrusion on the peace and quiet of an entire neighbourhood (the occupants are never there to hear it themselves!!) from the noise of the alarm itself, and also the cacophany of dog barking that it gives rise to, but the cost of time and petrol of the patrolmen involved must add considerably to your costs - and therefore by extension the cost of your service fees to all of us Of more serious potential consequences is the fact that whilst your patrolmen are attending to false call-outs, genuine emergencies might be arising elsewhere which are delayed. I am aware that a number of other security companies help to overcome this by permitting only a certain number of false alarm calls each month, and that if this is exceeded a charge is levied to cover the extra costs. To my knowledge no such action is taken by CMS, and the question arises - would you not consider introducing such a condition. Maybe it would just cause you to lose a few members who would find this unacceptable, but in the interests of the great majority, and of your escalating costs, would this not on balance be in both your favour and of the majority of us who have to live with this interminable nuisance. These are a few snippets of just some of the crimes that have been reported in the last week:
NOVEMBER 28 – A break-in occurred at Willow Terrace, Lakefield, where the Trellidoor was forced open and a laptop stolen. NOVEMBER 29 – Tyres were stolen off a vehicle in Meyer Road, Marister. NOVEMBER 29 – 2 dogs were poisoned in Marco Polo Street, Bonaero Park. NOVEMBER 30 – The outside room of a home in President Steyn Road, Rynfield was broken into, where the suspects stole garden equipment. NOVEMBER 30 – Suspects forced open a window of a home in Varing Street, Northmead, took house keys that were hanging up and used these to open the door, and stole a laptop. NOVEMBER 30 – An armed robbery took place at a business in Elm Road, Benoni Agricultural Holdings. NOVEMBER 30 – A woman was tied up in her home in Davidson Street, Rynfield when armed robbers entered through the back door. NOVEMBER 30 – TVs were stolen from a home in Baines Street, Rynfield after suspects forced open the door. DECEMBER 1 – A break-in occurred in Southy Road, Farrarmere. A window and burglar proofing was forced open and a TV stolen. DECEMBER 1 – Suspects forced open the main gate at a home in Carp Road, Bonaero Park and stole a motor vehicle. DECEMBER 1 – Gate motors were stolen in Olienhout Street, Northvilla and Prestwick Avenue, Bonaero Park. DECEMBER 1 – The front door of a home in Blake Street, Farrarmere was forced open. Suspects stole a TV. DECEMBER 1 – A domestic worker was robbed of her handbag in Fairchild Street, Impala Park by 2 white males. DECEMBER 2 – A second break-in occurred at Atlas Mall, Reier road, Atlasville. The suspects broke the glass door of the shop and stole cigarettes. DECEMBER 2 – A family in a complex in Coleridge Road, Farrarmere was held up at gunpoint in their home. When they left, the suspects then broke into another unit in the same complex. TVs were taken from both units. DECEMBER 3 – Stokroos Street, Northmead was the scene of a break-in where a laptop was stolen. DECEMBER 3 – 2 laptops were stolen from a house in Dobson Street, Rynfield. On the same day a home in Madeley Street, Rynfield was broken into, where the suspects stole a TV and computer. DECEMBER 4 – A further 2 laptops were stolen from a home in Curtis Street, Rynfield. DECEMBER 4 – Petrea Street, Atlasville was the scene of a break-in. The suspects stole 2 TVs, a laptop and computer. DECEMBER 4 – 2 computers were stolen during a break-in in Leopard Road, Zesfontein.

On the morning of 20 November 2011 dagga tree found growing at a premises in Springs Road, Putfontein. Although members of the SAPS were called to the scene, it was believed that the dagga was growing wild on the property and there were no indications that the dagga was being grown specifically for the purposes of selling it. The dagga tree was uprooted and confiscated by members of the Crystal Park SAPS.

Keep your doors locked while driving. Be aware of people driving behind you or walking in the street when you approach your driveway. Be alert when withdrawing cash at an ATM or the Bank and check that you are not followed. Keep the grass verge outside your driveway clear of foreign objects. Tell your domestic worker/gardener not to allow anyone into your home without contacting you first. Test your alarm system at least once a month, as well as your panic buttons. Set your alarm EVERY TIME you leave home. If you go away on holiday, arrange for someone to clear your postbox/gate of leaflets/junk mail etc.

Ladies, don't leave your handbag on the passenger seat while driving, or in the shopping trolley when shopping. ? Don't leave laptops or personal items near a window at your home. ? Don't leave house/car keys hanging up where they can be accessed through a window. ? Don't forget to lock your main gate and/or garage door. ? Don't leave empty appliance boxes outside your home. ? Don't leave your pets alone at home while you go away on leave. Make arrangements for someone to look after them.
