‘WHO WILL BELIEVE THE CENSUS NOW?’ W hile the following took place in Edenvale, it could just as easily have been anywhere.

“The census 2011 is a farce.

The photo shows a Stats SA employee with eraser in hand, erasing out information on people's forms. He was sitting at the security hut at a boomed off area in Edenvale. When I asked him what he was doing and why he was erasing, he said his supervisor told him to do this. I asked for a supervisor’s name, and he said "I don't know". He continued to say "the people made mistakes and I must fix it". I asked how many forms he was erasing out, he said, "all of them". I asked to see which forms and he would not show me. He would not show me from which street the forms were. He packed them up and put them in his bag. He would not show me what he was erasing and kept saying I must wait for his supervisor. A poster on the lamppost gave me details of a supervisor, "Sibongile". I called her. She tried her utmost to give an explanation as to why the numerators were erasing the forms. Any kind of tampering with these forms is surely illegal. As these forms will be counted electronically, I assume, hence the pencil, then any mistake made will be kicked out of the system. Any statistician allows a percentage for errors. Sibongile finally arrived with another homeowner who had offered her a lift to where we were. I asked him if he was happy with them erasing on his form and he said, absolutely not. I also stood at the boom gate asking people as they came and went out of the street if they were happy that the forms were being tampered with. Everyone expressed shock and reiterated that that should not be happening. Another homeowner in front of where we were came out. She was dismayed to find her form was at risk and asked to see her copy. Hers, completed a week ago, they said

had already gone to Pretoria. How do we, as ordinary citizens, know that each of our forms have not been tampered with? How certain are we that they have "erroneously erased" a column without our knowledge. How can we trust the results of this survey and how can government do what is right if our forms have been tampered with? I fully understand the reasoning behind a census, if the results and statistics extracted from the information given is true. However, if any numerator, or anyone else for that matter, is given full authority to erase the answers, be they correct or incorrectly filled in, then that makes this census, null and void and a complete farce. We have wasted time and a lot of money on a census that will not reflect the true results. If a student at school is asked to complete their examination in pencil and the prefect who is asked to collect the papers has the right to erase anything on the form, from the desk number to the students name, that would be illegal. I want an explanation as to why numerators are allowed to tamper with a legal document. This is not the first time that we have seen numerators sitting on the side of the road with an eraser in their hands. We spotted three at the boom gates of another boomed off area in Edenvale, I just did not catch them on camera. Sibongile contacted her superior who was less astute and far more aggressive in his mannerism towards me on the telephone. By this point, I had flagged down a passing police vehicle and asked for their assistance. They agreed with me that it was unacceptable for the document to be erased and they too agreed that if the census forms are being scanned electronically, it would kick out errors, which become inadmissible. I threatened to go to the media with the evidence in hand. The superior said, "I am giving you the go-ahead to go to the media". I asked for his name, he refused to give it to me. He kept

provoking me for my name. I gave him my name, he responded, "I will not give you my name". I handed the telephone over to the police officers who spoke to him, when the phone was handed back to me, the rude man on the other end of the phone said to me, "I have given you what you want". I answered, "what is that?". "I have given you to go-ahead to go to the media", he said. "Well can I have your name", I asked. He did not give me is name, instead he said, "You are not allowed to intimidate the numerators".

I said "I am doing nothing of the sort". "I can hear the shouting in the background" was his reply. I said that was the Census people and the police officers and no-one was being intimidated. I confirmed with the policemen that I had not intimidated anyone and that I felt the numerators themselves had handled the situation relatively well. I am hoping that you will raise the issue of the Census and the question around erasing forms for us to get answers from government.” Sandy

ncidents of ‘smash and grab’ have increased in recent weeks, with mostly handbags being taken. Ladies, please stop leaving your handbags and cell phones on the seat or visible to anyone looking in the window. If everyone stopped doing this, then maybe these incidents would stop. Not only do you have to start the process of replacing all your personal items that were in your handbag, you have to replace your window as well. We also still have residents who leave their laptops in their vehicle overnight. Is it really worth losing

all your info! Just a reminder that the criminals are currently doing their Christmas Shopping, so that they can also go on leave mid December, so please be extra vigilant during the next month or so. Please be especially careful when drawing cash from the bank or the ATM, and be aware of those around you. If you withdraw a large amount of cash, try to ensure you are not followed. If in doubt, phone the Control Room or 10111. There are still many people out there who believe it won’t happen to them – until it does.

Where is the fence? residents of Farrarmere ask Councillor Mary Goby (Ward 28) received numerous complaints from the residents in the lower part of Farrarmere near the N12 re the fence that was taken down by the contractors for SANRAL. Cllr Goby arranged a meeting with the residents, Basil Read and Velavke (Joint Venture with SANRAL) to discuss the issue. The meeting was held on Friday night, 4, November in Windermere Drive - even the rain did not stop the residents coming out. Henk Kaal (Velavke) discussed the process of the highway and mentioned that this section of the highway should be complete at the latest May 2012. There will be four lanes till Tom Jones and only three lanes to the East. The main discussion was, with no fence residents felt that their safety and security had worsened since the construction of the highway and removal of the existing fence. Basil Read will re-instate the fence; however the residents requested a concrete palisade and not the diamond mesh fence again. Basil

Read will, for now, put the diamond mesh fence up as soon as possible. The residents will need to submit motivational letters and present them to SANRAL. The large earth mounds were constructed due to noise levels from the highway and are intended to be grassed over. Certain parts of Windermere Drive, which were closest to the highway with no earth mounds, will have a wall constructed. Velavke explained that there is a need for a physical barrier to prevent vehicles coming off Atlas Road and re-entering the highway via Windermere Drive in order to bypass the toll gantry. The paving that ends at Patterdale will now go to the end of Windermere by the cul de sac. The residents requested speed humps, an upgrade of Windermere road, paving kerbs (close to Main Road) and signs for the c,ul de sac which Cllr Goby will take up with Ekurhuleni. Councilor Goby thanked the residents for their attendance, suggestions and concerns. The residents are now more positive that their complaints have been heard and are in the process of being addressed.

Keep to the refuse collection schedule Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward Councillor in Ward 28, Mary Goby, has appealed to residents to ensure that they follow the Ekurhuleni Metro’s refuse collection calendar when putting out there household refuse for collection. “The Ekurhuleni Metro follows a predetermined calendar when collecting household refuse and it is the responsibility of residents to ensure that they only put household refuse out for collection on the diarised day,” Clr. Goby explained. “Refuse collection normally starts at 7h00 in the morning so putting out your household refuse for collection on the previous night should also be fine.” “Residents who are unsure of the day on which their refuse is collected can contact their municipal offices and they will issue you with a Refuse Calendar. Alternatively they can call the Solid Waste Department on 011-9996829/6828.” “In addition, the Ekurhuleni Metro distributes Refuse Collection Calendars in March every year, and adverts also appear in local newspapers. Please note, whenever there is a public holiday the date of your collection moves

These items must be disposed of in the correct manner by taking them to the correct dumping site.” “If you notice that your neighbour puts their heavy refuse on your pavement or on someone else’s you can ask them not to. Provincial Task Team lends a hand Vlei Avenue. A sign of the times? For just over a week now, members of SAPS Provincial Task Team have been conducting operations in the Benoni area, to assist the Benoni SAPS with their ‘zero tolerance’ campaign. This has resulted in numerous arrests, particularly in the Western Extension/Benoni CBD areas. Two of our Precinct chairmen, Clive Patterson (FCP) and Brandon Scott (GNCP) were

privileged to meet a few of the members of this Task Team. On behalf of the community at large, we are extremely grateful for the excellent job they are doing to rid our suburbs of this criminal element. Well done for your sterling efforts on our behalf. It really is appreciated. From what we understand, this Task Team will continue to assist from time to time in Benoni, as and when required.

In response to the letter from Wendy, regarding the upkeep of the pavements in Vlei Avenue, Pomona ext 3. I could not agree with her more although her letter seems to unfairly paint all the residents of Vlei Avenue with the same brush. I had my house built on Vlei Avenue in 1984 when the road was un-tarred, the sewers were septic tanks and the veld opposite the houses was filled with about 500 peach trees, which gave the most fantastic display of blossom in early spring. Myself and 3 or 4 of the other residents on the lower end of Vlei Avenue have lived here for many, many years and have maintained our own gardens AND the veld on the other side of the road, however I have noticed over the recent years a general decay in everything about Pomona Ext 3 from speeding cars, quad bikes, 28 ton lorries, loud music blaring across the veld and barking dogs that are left to their own devices all day long. The decline started after the peach orchard was destroyed and the farmer sold his sub divided plots to developers, I use the word developers very loosely as it seems the conditions for buying the plots fell into 4 categories thus, a) Someone with a lot of money but no building experience. b) Someone with a lot of building experience but no money. c) Anyone who had seen at least 2 episodes of Grand Designs on TV d) Anyone who had experience of building with Lego blocks. There are currently 5 states of development on Vlei Avenue. One complex has 50% houses inhabited and 50% under construction for the last 12 months.

BCP

Another complex has a boundary wall built but nothing else. The third complex has a road built but no wall at all, and the 4th complex, would you believe, the developer started digging the foundations today (Nov 2nd 2011). I do not hold out much hope for the completion of the latest ‘development’ because as soon as any prospective buyer turns into Vlei Avenue they will be met with the 5th ‘development‘ which is the slum-dog millionaires’ sidewalk at the top of Vlei Avenue. As Wendy wrote, it has developed into a dumping ground for the 3 or 4 ‘amateur developers’ that live opposite the garbage on Vlei Avenue. Either that, or the 3 or 4 families involved must have been amazed when they awoke one morning and looked through their newly built extension or bathroom and saw that the ‘fairies’ had dumped tiles identical to their old ones and slabs of concrete exactly like their old foundations. I suppose they might moan that the ‘municipality won’t move the rubbish over the road’ but then again they probably couldn’t give a hoot anyway. Can’t the three or four house-owners concerned get together and each contribute to a truck to take away their disgraceful rubbish, it really does put the level of Vlei Avenue on a par with something we see on TV from a township. I have a lot of sympathy for the couple of respectful house owners at the top of Vlei Ave who have the disgraceful outlook in front of them day and night, they must hate the place! I admire your concerns Wendy but unfortunately not your optimism. The ‘people’ dumping the rubbish on the roadside are unlikely to read this ‘community’ paper, even if they do I don’t think they would realise the article was referring to them but even if they did I don’t think they would give a stuff anyway. What a complete shame that people can live like that without shame or pride! Signed. A disappointed Vlei Avenue resident

Lonehill Estate - Daans Lonehill Estate, the mischievous rock act that brought you the fun-spirited sound of ‘Techno Band’ have managed to climb the charts by exploring their own ‘special blend’ of song. Since their formation in early 2005, Lonehill Estate have released two albums, Take It All and Hong Kong Dollar; but true stardom came after a few line-up changes, a couple of band marriages and some children; life experiences which ultimately culminated into musical genius. The decision to only release singles going forth has seen the band moving with the times and consequently created an extensive demand across digital platforms. Their latest single Daans is once again a hybrid of dance and rock n roll, fused with their traditional tonguein-cheek lyrics.

Director: Ruben Fleischer Written by: Michael Diliberti Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, Dilshad Vadsaria, Nick Swardson and Michael Pena and Matthew Macfadyen

In the action-comedy 30 Minutes or Less, Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) is a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wanna-be criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson). The volatile duo kidnaps Nick and forces him to rob a bank. With mere hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari). As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship 30 Minutes or Less is actually something of a success. Jesse Eisenberg seems a lot more comfortable ‘doing Jesse Eisenberg’ now that he’s had a chance to flex his Fincher muscles, and his chemistry with Aziz Ansari looks almost effortless. A short and sweet, lighthearted comedy worth a good few chuckles.

Western Ext residents come out in force

R

esidents in Western Extension took to the streets on the morning of Sunday 6 November 2011, to indicate their intention to take back their streets. The chairman, Derek Morris, delivered a strong message that Western Extension will not tolerate drug dealers and prostitutes and wished them a happy departure out of the suburb! He also praised Celia Morris for the launch of the Urban Renewal Project which she started by cleaning up the swimming pool gardens and planting some flowers. What a difference – it really looks lovely! A big thank you to everyone who took part in and supported this event, and for all the hard work that went into making this possible.

CMS Technical Services

The December holiday period is creeping closer and closer and we again ask everyone to test their alarm NOW. If you are planning to go away, please do not wait until the day before you leave. It is highly unlikely that we will be able to send a technician out at such short notice. From past experience, there are not enough hours in the day for our technicians to attend to every “last minute” call, particularly during early December. Follow this easy procedure and remember to keep records of all tests and results, as your insurance company will require these in the event of a claim. Alarm test procedure: • Notify the CMS Control Room (0861-425-493) of your intention to test. • Set the alarm system, but do not exit in the normal fashion. Stay on your premises, but REMAIN VERY STILL! • Once set, allow at least two minutes for the transmission to complete. • Move into a protected area and wait for the alarm to activate. • Move to the control panel and unset/ reset the system. • Call the Control Room and check if the signal was received. • If received – obtain a reference number of the test. If NOT, re-do the test. • If the second test fails, contact the CMS Technical Support Department on 0861-265-267.
