Murder shocks Alphen Park residents

T

ragedy struck in Alphen Park on the evening of Friday 9 December 2011, when one of the residents of Amarella Street was murdered. Our Control Room received a call at 10.26 pm from Mr Coxall advising that his son, Wayne, had been shot. Wayne and his fiancée had been playing darts in the garage when 2 armed black males entered. The suspects forced them into the house, told to lie down on the floor and tied them up. Wayne managed to get loose, got up and ran to get his firearm. In an effort to protect himself and his fiancée, he shot at the suspects, who returned fire. It is believed that one of the bullets entered Wayne’s heart, resulting in his death. On arrival at the scene, one of our patrolmen found a blood trail and located one of the suspects at the back of the premises. The suspect was found with several bullet wounds, but was still alive. This suspect was arrested and transported to hospital. Unfortunately the second suspect managed to escape. The arrested suspect is due to be released from hospital on Wednesday 14 December 2011, at which time he will be taken into custody. We can but hope that he is under guard while in hospital and the necessary steps have been taken to ensure that he does not escape. It was believed that the house had been targeted, judging by the ‘signs’ found in the trees outside the property. It is believed that the suspects entered Alphen Park by walking on the pipe leading from Mercury Street to Homestead Dam, and did not enter through the boom. Members of the SAPS indicated that

‘Fingerprints’ would only come out on Monday 12 December 2011. This was totally unacceptable. Direct contact was therefore made with the Fingerprinting Department, and someone arrived within a short period of time. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sgt(f) Gibson and WO Msiza from the LCRC (Local Criminal Record Centre), for attending the crime scene timeously to collect evidence. The LCRC (forensics) works 24/7 and can be called out at any time, a fact that is seemingly unknown to the SAPS. This murder follows a spate of crime within Alphen Park in recent months, totalling 11 break-ins, 3 attempted break-ins and an armed house robbery since June this year. In October 2011, Alphen Park Chairman, Gary Furno, wrote to the Benoni Station Commander, Brigadier Mariemuthoo regarding these incidents, raising concern for the safety of the residents. Following this letter, Gary met with the Station Commander, who indicated that the SAPS want to work with the Alphen Park community, as well as its management company. Gary had also expressed concern that something needs to be done to prevent the crime situation in Alphen Park from turning ugly, resulting in someone being killed, which is exactly what has happened. According to Gary Furno, no feedback has been received from the SAPS in connection with any of the break-ins. He further believes the level of crime in South Africa is out of control and that we now live in a violent society, caused mainly by the political climate in the country. Living within an enclosure no longer ensures that crime will not take place. We cannot control the crime occurring around us, all we can do is try to regulate what happens within our enclosure, which is difficult when there is

a general lack of policing. We all need to work together to combat crime – SAPS, the community, and our management company, CMS. Unfortunately Station Commander, Brigadier Mariemuthoo, was unavailable to comment at

the time of going to print. All Alphen Park residents are urged to be alert and vigilant.

Please report anything or anyone suspicious to the Control Room on 0861 425 493 or 10111.

Feedback on Escapees from Boksburg North

F

ollowing the escape of three suspects from their holding cell at Boksburg North Police Station on Saturday 3 December 2011, ACP Chairman, Kevin Froneman, wrote a letter to the Station Commander, Col van Nieuwenhuizen, on behalf of the Atlasville Community, an excerpt of which is as follows: Quote However, as a community, we were dismayed and shocked to learn of the escape of these three suspects from their holding cell on Saturday 3 December 2011, particularly after the sterling work done by certain officers leading to their capture. As Chairman, I have been inundated with enquiries as to how such a thing could come about and the community as a whole are extremely concerned and looking to me for answers. Please, as a matter of extreme urgency, provide ACP with an explanation, in writing, as to how

these three prisoners managed to escape and what action is being taken to not only reapprehend them but to ensure that such an escape will not happen in the future. Victory for Chantelle

Once again members of the Precinct Women’s Support Group attended the continuation of the bail hearing for accused Jurgen Vandekeere, which continued at the Benoni Magistrates Court on 6th and 7th December 2011 in support of friends and family of Chantelle Barnard, whose dead body was found at the accused’s home in April this year. The accused is due to stand trial at Delmas High Court in February next year. In the meantime, a bail application was made by his step-father, Roland Vandekeere. While the accused’s Advocate maintained that Jurgen was not a flight risk, we believe that if he was released, his family would have made every effort to get him out of the country by some means rather than have him stand trial. Once the arguments from both sides had been concluded, everyone waited with baited breath

for Judge Makamu to give his summation and ruling. Result – bail was denied. As you can imagine, family and friends were ecstatic, knowing that the accused would remain incarcerated until his trial and would not be able to spend Christmas with his family.

The detectives responsible for the good work in originally arresting the suspects together with Provincial and National task teams are hunting for the escapees day and night. 6. Mr Herman Heunis CPF chairperson was present at the Police Station prior to the escaping became known and after the escaping and can confirm that the Police Officers on duty had been visiting the cells regularly while detaining further prisoners. Satisfactory answer? You be the judge?

Despite requests to Boksburg North SAPS and indications that a press release would be forthcoming, The PCN has been unable to obtain any information or comment from the SAPS regarding this issue.

We appeal to all residents to keep your eyes open. If you do spot any of these suspects, please DO NOT approach them, rather phone the Control Room on 0861 425 493 or 10111 immediately. We consider these suspects to be armed and dangerous and believe they will not hesitate to harm or even shoot you.

Greetings from your Committees

Once again, another year is almost at a close. Now is the time when most people are looking forward to their annual holidays and a relaxing few weeks away from the hustle and bustle. Your Precinct committees would like to take this opportunity, jointly, to wish all residents a safe, peaceful and enjoyable Festive Season. Without your support the Precincts would not be so successful after all these years. For those of you who are traveling, take care on our roads, particularly with all the construction work going on everywhere. We’re sure you are all in a hurry to reach your destination, but we’d like you to get there safely and in one piece. We wish you all a safe and pleasant journey. Please remember to arrange for someone to keep an eye on your home and have your postbox cleared on a regular basis. We also hope you’ve made the necessary arrangements to have your beloved pets taken care of in your absence. It is also important to notify your security company of who to contact in case of an emergency while you are away. We also take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in ensuring our continued success, including those of you who call in to report suspicious vehicles and persons in our streets. We believe these reports have helped to prevent even more incidents of crime from taking place. A special thanks to our dedicated patrolmen who put their life on the line for us every day, and we mustn’t forget our controllers who man our 24 hour control room. While you’re off on vacation, spare a thought for these hard working individuals who will continue to patrol the streets in our absence. We mustn’t forget those who provide us with our “additional” services such as our paramedics, ER24, Life ALS, our trauma support unit, The Olive Branch, our Rape Centre and our anti dog poisoning support unit. What a wonderful team to have on your side when the going gets tough. Our thanks also go to all the special SAPS members who have assisted and worked with us during the past year. Without you we would not be able to remove some of the criminals from our streets. Thank you all for making it possible. We all like to celebrate on New Year’s Eve. If you need a car to get to where you’re going, please try and appoint a designated driver and go in a group. If you do have “one too many”, be sensible – have someone else drive you home or arrange to stay with a friend until you’re sober. We always believe we’re sober enough to drive, even if we’re not, so do the right thing – Don’t Drink and Drive. Once again we wish all of you a safe and Merry Christmas, as well as a Happy New Year. A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Accommodating an elderly relative in the home

G

rowing old is never easy and many elderly people find themselves faced with the challenges associated with increasing frailty or loneliness associated with aging. One option is to move into a retirement village. Another is to reside with family members. In some cultures the idea of moving into a retirement village is unheard off. Many elderly people prefer this option because they believe it will help them to retain some measure of independence. Others however find it extremely difficult to live in an institutional setting. Living with family members has the benefit of residing with people that you love and who love you in return. Before this step is taken there are a number of issues that should be thoroughly discussed and ironed out to avoid conflict. Therefore this article is not intended to discourage elderly people from living with their children or vice versa, but to point out some of the things which should be taken into consideration. If the older generation decides to invest money in the younger generation’s property by building on or constructing a granny flat, both parties should consider what will happen if the elderly person becomes frail and needs permanent nursing care. Will this care be given at home? What are the financial implications should the elderly person need to move to a frail care? How would the elderly person be compensated if he or she is n longer residing in the building they added on? Who will pay for extra care that may be needed? Increasing the value of the property of one child may cause jealousy and rivalry between siblings.

CHAPLAIN

In the long term this may have implications for inheritance and one should consider how equity will be established when drawing up a Will. The elderly person may be left financially destitute if things do not work out. There can be a great deal of bitterness and disappointment should the younger generation be transferred, decide to move or find themselves forced to sell their home for financial reasons. Many elderly people find themselves high and dry, having invested in a home on the property of the children which is subsequently sold. How will the elderly person be compensated for the increased value of the property in the event that the home is sold? The older generation may find it difficult to part with belongings. This can lead to clutter and overcrowding of the host family’s home. In a family various people adopt different roles. In healthy families parents have authority over young children. When a grandparent moves in, it should be clear that the parent is responsible for the discipline of the child. Different child-rearing practices between grandparents and adult children can cause significant conflict between the elderly person and their son or daughter-in-law. Children may also feel confused and resentful if grandparents step in to control their behaviour and activities, for example, if they are expected to keep quiet “because granny is sleeping”, if teens are told to turn down the music and so forth. The stress and demands of looking after a frail elderly person may become overwhelming to a young parent, particularly a wife, and this may lead to the

WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS? Have you ever uttered the words "Why is this happening to me?" I mean after all, we try to live right. We pay our bills, we go to Church, we read our Bibles, we try to be good husbands or wives, but still this terrible thing has happened to me. What did I do to deserve this? Why did they treat me so badly? Why do things happen to hurt me so much? Where is God when I need Him? Why did he allow this to happen? If you are looking for some fantastic, new revelation to answer these questions, you’re going to be disappointed, because I don't have one. I have only the old answers you have heard before, but that doesn’t make them any less true. You see more than likely, you don’t deserve all the bad stuff that is happening to you. Where is God and why didn't he stop it? He is still in heaven watching over his creation. Why didn't he stop it? For the same reason He didn't stop it when they came and took His Son to be crucified. Some things we just have to see through to the end on our own - not because He doesn't care, not because He doesn't love us, but because that is one way our faith and reliance upon Him grows and is strengthened. There is a good chance you have heard the following story, because it is a favourite of preachers. A man tells that one morning he had discovered a cocoon in the bark of the tree. He noticed that a butterfly was trying to emerge from the cocoon. He waited a while, but it took so long. Finally, he decided to help the poor creature along. Slowly and carefully, he tore the cocoon to help the butterfly escape. The butterfly started to come out, but its wings were folded back and crumpled. The butterfly valiantly struggled but could not make it and soon died. The man had forced the butterfly to come out before its time without a struggle. As he held the little body in his hands, he realised the terrible thing he had done. It was the struggle to come out of the cocoon that the butterfly needed to pump the fluids into is wings and give it strength. Without the struggle, it died. If you're going through tough times right now or if you do in the future, don't label God as uncaring and don't give up on Him. It may be that you need to strengthen your wings of faith to be what you're supposed to be. If He reached out and interfered you may never grow into what he has intended you to be.

neglect of children, who in turn may misbehave to gain attention. There may also be jealousy between siblings if one set of grandchildren become closer to the grandparents because of the increased contact compared with the other. Issues may also arise over, for example, who gives instructions to domestic workers. The elderly person may find it extremely difficult to give up control and allow the younger wife to rule in her own home. They may find it difficult to accept the way that food is prepared or the way that the house is kept and this may lead to resentment on the part of the wife. It is also important to consider what will happen when, for example, the family goes on holiday. Will the elderly person go along? Will someone remain behind to take care of him or her? Who will pay for the holiday or for care? It is critically important that the couple still have time to be a couple and to build their marriage. There should be times when the husband and wife can, for example, go out for a meal and not feel obliged to take the elderly person along. Many elderly people who live with their children feel resentful when they find themselves acting as babysitters. This may simply be expected and the elderly person may feel used. On the other hand, the young parents may become resentful of the children's attachment to the grandparent, particularly if the grandparent becomes a primary caregiver. Families have unspoken rules by which they operate. For example, you will know in your own

PCN 14 Decebmer 2011

home who was/is expected to apologise first in the event of a quarrel, exactly how to start a disagreement, who has the right to change the rules, how money was managed and so forth, although many of these things are not explicitly stated. In particular, families create their own ways of dealing with conflict and disagreements. In some homes it is acceptable to challenge an older person and in others it is not. Open discussion may be regarded as extremely disrespectful in one family but not in another. Children growing up with particular parents are aware of these rules, but in-laws may not be. It is easy for the child of the elderly person to fit in with these rules, but far more difficult for daughter or son-in-law to do so. This may lead to confusion and resentment. However difficulties associated with adjusting to accommodating an extra person in the home cannot be ironed out without open communication and a genuine concern for the well-being and happiness of all the parties involved. If the younger generation can make it their objective to make the older generation’s last days happy, and the older generation can make it their objective to leave behind good memories, the arrangement can work out for the enrichment of the lives of all concerned. On a regular basis, the SPCA find cardboard boxes containing dogs or cats, left outside their premises instead of bringing them into the SPCA. Most of the time they are found before they have a chance to ‘escape’ from the box, but there have been many occasions where these animals have found a way out of the box and then run around the street where they could very easily get knocked down. It is felt that people are embarrassed to bring in pets they no longer want or who have had a ‘litter’ of puppies or kittens they do not want or cannot afford to keep. Please, everyone, rather bring them inside so that they can have a chance of being adopted. The SPCA will not judge you in any way. They would rather these animals were safe. Even if their offices are closed, there is a notice outside regarding a service entrance where these animals can be taken. Over the next month many stray animals are found and brought to the SPCA. These are normally cats and dogs which have been left at home while their owners have gone away on leave. When people come back from their holiday, they are often upset because their beloved pet is not there. Avoid this problem by having a microchip put in. The SPCA is running a ‘special’ during the month of December 2011 at a cost of only R150.00. A small price to pay to ensure you can locate your pet if it does manage to get loose. If you are going away and you have arranged for someone to look after your animals in your absence, please make sure you leave a number for an emergency vet or the SPCA with them, should something go wrong while you are away.
