Chantelle – you will be remembered

S

unday, 1st April 2012 marked the anniversary of the murder of Chantelle Barnard, just days before her 21st Birthday. A girl who had her whole life ahead of her – cut down in her prime. Over 30 family members and friends gathered outside the property where Chantelle’s body was found in Doreen Road, Benoni North to pay tribute to a young girl who was so dear to their heart. Around 12 noon everyone met first at the corner of High and Surprise, to erect a cross and lay flowers in remembrance. Family and friends then proceeded to do the same outside 55 Doreen Road, home of the accused Jurgen Vandekeere, where Chantelle spent her dying moments. Following a prayer, everyone sang Amazing Grace, before leaving to visit her grave. Less than three hours later, everything had been removed from outside Doreen Road. This, Suzette Barnard, mother of the murdered girl, could understand, as the accused’s family would

not want to be reminded, when they came in and out of the premises, of the gruesome and heinous act that took place inside the property. HOWEVER, was it really necessary for them to remove the cross and flowers at the corner of High and Surprise? They obviously thought so. All over our suburbs there are crosses and flowers, signs of remembrance where people have been killed. These remain untouched out of respect for the families who have lost a loved one. Chantelle’s mother, Suzette, could not understand why they had to also remove this small sign of remembrance. What kind of people are they? HAVE THEY NO SHAME OR DO THEY HAVE A GUILTY CONSCIENCE? Is there nothing they would not do to stop being reminded of what happened a year ago? Removing these reminders of Chantelle will not make the case go away. Rest Assured – Chantelle’s family will have its day in Court in October 2012.

Are break-ins the result of inside information?

I

t is becoming more and more obvious, after questioning people following a break-in, that many of our criminals have the inside track on what residents have in their home. There have been instances where the suspects knew just exactly where to go in the house to lay their hands on items such as jewellery or a safe. This information could only have been obtained from someone who is aware of where these items are kept. And on a few occasions the domestic worker or gardener has ‘disappeared’. Although this is not the case in every instance, the number is increasing. We are not saying that all domestic workers and gardeners are in league with the criminals. However, we believe many of those domestic workers are either intimidated by these criminals or they unsuspectingly give out this information when engaged in conversation. There have been occasions recently where it was fairly obvious that a gardener or domestic worker was involved, but many of our residents just do not want to believe that their employees would do such a thing. End result – they do not open a case and the criminals are laughing at us, all the way to the bank. We appeal to residents to keep a copy of your employees’ ID document as well as a note of

their physical home address.

CHECK LIST – ID DOCUMENT Visual Check • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Compare the photograph in the ID document with the actual person. Compare the ID photo with the photo on the Driver’s License. Check the 11th and 12th digits of the ID number for citizenship: 08: South African or 18: Non South African Compare with detail underneath barcode Check digits 7 – 10 of the ID number (indicating the sex: Male or female): 1 – 4999: Female 5000 + : Male Check alignment of words and letters in horizontal and vertical aspects. Check the print on pages 1 and 4 for inconsistencies in font, broken lettering or print density. Check for glue marks around the edges of the photograph. In the event of photograph being lifted, verify the date of birth under the photograph with the ID number. Check for signs of damage to background printing or paper. Check for triangular watermarks on every page.

IDP Time – what do you want in your Ward Only after our last issue had gone to print were we informed that the dates for the IDP meetings had changed, to allow more time for residents to prepare and make submissions. The new dates for the IDP (Integrated Development Plan) meetings are set out

below. This is the time when Council start deciding where the money will be spent in the next year. We need the input of members of the community on what is really needed within our suburbs to improve them.

Easter Holiday Tips

Trespassers CAN be prosecuted

A

lmost every day our patrolmen apprehend suspects in our suburbs. But what happens then? Especially if a suspect is caught trespassing on someone’s property, i.e. they are apprehended before they have broken in to your home or vehicle. Trespassing on private property is a crime and Yes, they do get arrested by SAPS. But what happens after that? All too often these suspects have to be released – the main reason being that YOU do not want to open a case; YOU do not want the bother of having to go to Court. NO COMPLAINANT = NO CASE = NO PROSECUTION The end result is that these criminals are set free to come back and commit further crime in our neighbourhoods. These criminals are not scared of being arrested as they know that the majority of people will not pursue the matter if they are caught. No wonder we have such a high crime rate. Are we so intimidated that we allow this to

happen? We are trying to be proactive, trying to prevent crime from taking place, but we often ask ourselves “why do we even bother?” when the community itself is part of the problem. If we are ever to make a dent in the crime, we need to start sending a message to the criminals that we will not tolerate it any longer. And the only way to do that is to press charges – open a case, and follow it through to the end - CONVICTION. We have already had a successful case where a suspect was convicted for trespassing, so we know it can be done. BUT we need your participation. Once the criminal element realise that we are taking crime seriously, and they will be prosecuted, then they will move on to greener pastures. By not proceeding with a case, we are in effect sending the message that it is OK to commit crime in our suburbs. We need all of you to step up to the plate NOW and play your part in our fight against crime. BE PART OF THE SOLUTION AND LET’S GET RID OF THE PROBLEM.

It’s hard to believe we’re already a quarter way through this year. No sooner have we recovered from our December vacation when it’s time for the usual exodus to the coast for the Easter break. Before you depart, we suggest you go through this checklist. Entire home checked to ensure all windows are secured and doors locked. Don’t forget the outbuildings. Alarm tested and in good working order. All security gate and door locks tested. All sliding security gates closed and locked. Garage doors locked and no remotes left lying around. Shrubs around entrances trimmed to avoid concealment of criminals. Lights connected to timers or movement sensors. Newspapers and any other home deliveries cancelled or arrangements made for someone to collect post while you are away. No cell phones or other valuables left lying around in plain sight. Advise your security service provider that you will be away and provide them with alternative keyholders. Do not pack your vehicle in full view of passersby • in the street. If you intend driving to your destination, here’s • a quick pre-journey vehicle check: • Tyre pressure/tread. Lights and brakes are in good order. Check windscreen for cracks and ensure wiper blades are effective. Check fluid levels of oil, water etc. Ensure safety belts are in good order. While travelling: Make regular stops, preferably every 2 hours or 200kms. When you take a break, make sure you go for a stroll to exercise cramped limbs and increase circulation. Make sure your vehicle is well ventilated. If you are driving in direct sunshine, wear sunglasses. Glare strains the eyes and adds to fatigue. Make sure everyone wears their seat belt. Don’t rush to your destination – drive within the speed limit. Wishing you all a happy and blessed Easter

The Parlotones are a rock band based in Johannesburg, South Africa. They have achieved multiplatinum-selling status in their home country. They experiment with their sound and various structures in their songs, incorporating the typical doo-wop or traditional folk structures. The band is known for the face make-up worn by lead singer Kahn Morbee.

In the land of blood and honey

(FCM) The Parlotones will release their fourth studio album, Journey Through the Shadows, on May 8th via Sovereign Entertainment USA. The new album was recorded in Johannesburg and Cape Town during the final months of 2011 and includes 12 brand new tracks. "America dictates trends around the world," singer Kahn Morbee says. "If you're big there, the rest of the world listens. It has a ripple effect. We would be very proud to achieve success in the U.S. because very few artists from our country have managed it. I think for a long time, South Africans have had an inferiority complex in terms of our place in the world and our relative insignificance compared to the super powers. It would be nice to have a success story, especially in a nation that needs uplifting, and instill folks back home that 'can do' belief."

Much has been made of Angelina Jolie's directing debut – it's not often that an A-list gossip-magazine stalwart sticks their neck out artistically – and this sombre, powerful, and undeniably gripping film is the result. As a high-profile Hollywood liberal and a UNHCR goodwill ambassador, her choice of material – the mass rapes committed by Bosnian Serb forces during the 1992-5 Bosnian war – will perhaps lay her open to the charge of furrowed-brow earnestness, but Jolie's considered, muscular approach means that she is treading a fine line between gruesome war-vérité and preachy grandstanding. To her credit, she nearly always gets it right, despite occasionally resorting to shorthand to get across complicated political or ideological positions.

ary Goby, the DA ward 28 Councillor is pleased to be given this opportunity to address the residents of Ward 28 “If residents have any queries that they need assistance with they can email me on mary.goby@ekurhuleni.gov.za or call me on 082 679 7109,” said Goby. “I urge residents to familiarize themselves with some of the council procedures, for example it is far easier for me to take up concerns of residents with Council officials if I have a reference number to provide to officials.” If you have any Service Delivery Issues contact 0860-543-000 remember to insist on a reference number. If your query is not resolved in a few days please do not hesitate to contact me, the best way is via e-mail giving me full details and the reference number, as I can then more easily keep track of queries. The month of April has many public holidays. This may cause a delay in the distribution of monthly rates accounts. Fixing up arrear accounts is a hassle that can be avoided; I have provided the details of websites where residents can be in control of the billing and payment dates of their accounts. I urge residents to make use of these services provided by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM). Use www.motla.co.za, to submit all of your readings and choose the date that you would like your reading to reflect on your account. Click online services to register to use this service. Choosing the 1st of April to do your reading will ensure that you are billed correctly after the tariff increase. If you log on and it does not allow you to submit your readings give it a few days and you will be able to submit even if you submit middle of April you can still use the date you took the reading. The 1st of July is when the Council will redo the property rates; these rates will apply for 5 years. It is important that residents try to get an accurate property evaluation as close to the 1st of July as possible. To do this, contact an estate agent and book a property valuation. Keep the documentation that you are given, this will be proof that the Council does not under or over value your property during this time. Using the Motla website will be an effective way to deal with these rates increases. The Council have now made it possible to view your account online, this is very good news for residents. Go to https://www.esiyakhokha.co.za to be able to see what you owe the council. This is a fantastic service and will allow property owners to be in control even while they are away or if

they own rental properties and would like to be able to keep track of their accounts. Council have a cut off minimum of R150.00 in arrears before they will cut you off, this is very inconvenient if you are not at home when it happens. You then have to wait for the CCA office to open in the morning as they always cut off and reconnect after 15h00. This website is also very useful to property owners who own more than one property as the residents can see all accounts using just one login. If you have had the new water meter installed this is the finger print scanner, and you are experiencing any problems please let me know. You can experience pipes shuddering, no tag to switch off the water if you have a water leak in the house, no water readings on your account, no manual. I am assisting the Siyasiza Charity with two of their projects this year. The first is a blanket drive called Futumaleng; together we are trying to make sure that we can hand out 2000 blankets this year. In 2010 Siyasiza distributed 65 blankets and in 2011 615 blankets were distributed. If you would like to donate to this project you can buy a blanket from PEP and deliver it to the Victory Church, Chaucer and Wells Streets, Farrarmere alternatively you can deposit money into the Siyasiza account. If you choose to do an EFT please use the reference Futumaleng Project. The second project Siyasiza is running is a Food Parcel Project, their goal is to distribute 100 food parcels per month by the end of the year, and currently they are distributing 18 per month. A food parcel is made up of samp Poly, Milk Powder, tea bags, Fish in tomato sauce, peanut butter, soya mince, baked beans, stock cubes, iodated salt, brown sugar, sugar beans, mealie meal, rice and soya pack, a delivery cost and the cost of that days meal of the day. The total cost of this food parcel is R155. Again there are two ways to assist with this project, either to deliver the parcels or to deposit the cost of the parcel into the Siyasiza account. Again if you are donating the cost of a food parcel please use the reference Food Parcel Project. The bank details are Nedbank, East Rand Mall Branch Code 113 – 642 Acc Number 1017144230 Acc type Cheque account I look forward to hearing from you. If you are travelling over the Easter Holidays please travel safely and have a good break. Mary Goby

Granny and 2 year old girl knocked down A grandmother and her two year old granddaughter were walking down Third Road in Bredell AH on the morning of Monday 2 April 2012, the granny pushing the child in a pram. A Mazda bakkie then crashed into the two, leaving them with critical injuries. The Paramedics from the Johannesburg East branch were called out to the scene, arriving to find that both woman and child had suffered extensive injuries. They were both lying in the sand at the side of the road, the crumple pram a short way away. The two year old little girl needed immediate life saving treatment. She had sustained

what appeared to be a head injury and she was placed on assisted breathing equipment. She was further stabilised at the scene while paramedics waited for the Medicopter to land to take her to hospital. The ER24 Discovery Medicopter transported the child to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. The grandmother, believed to be in her 50`s, was treated for multiple injuries and was taken to Tembisa Hospital by ambulance. The occupants in the bakkie were not injured. Vanessa Jackson, ER24
