Crime in Transit

t is a quiet and pretty street, and on any other day you could easily imagine children playing in such a peaceful environment, but on Monday 30 April 2012, the peace was shattered by the exchange of gunfire. Less than half a kilometre away by road, and less than 200m as the crow flies, a G4S vehicle was picking up a cash box at a local supermarket in Pretoria Road, Rynfield, in broad daylight, two armed individuals held the guard up, taking his weapon and the cash box. They loaded the box into a waiting light coloured (white or silver) vehicle and then the car drove off with a driver and one of the suspects, while the other, carrying his own .38 firearm as well as the guard’s firearm ran off up the road, with the G4S vehicle in hot pursuit. Gunfire was exchanged, alerting the resident of the corner house, who said the individual stopped at his gate and “looked at me square in the eye with a 9mm in hand.” The resident, Steve, ran into his house, locking the door, and told his wife to ‘get down’, then hit the panic button. “CMS (Precinct) are those we count on”, he said, “they were here in a flash!” Indeed, one of the Precinct patrol vehicles arrived quickly, assessed the situation and called into the Control Room for back-up. “Within ten minutes there were at least ten cop cars as well as a lot more CMS (Precinct) vehicles. Quick thinking, Steve noted that his dogs were barking behind his house, and he

directed the police over his back wall and into the neighbouring property, where the suspect was hiding. Fortunately the neighbour, who is confined to a wheelchair, was safely locked in his house while the suspect was being arrested in his garden. Said both Steve and his neighbour, “I’m glad they got him!” And got him they did, with no injuries reported, recovering both the G4S guard’s 9mm and the .38 the suspect was carrying. With one suspect in custody already, it is only a matter of time before, to quote an officer on the scene, “we get the others too!” The operation, with both our Precinct patrolmen and the police working with fearsome efficiency together yet again, serves as a warning to any would-be criminals in the area; you will be caught if you break the law. It is as simple as that.

Armed robbers see blue By Philip Allebone

A

ttention to detail and an alert response have foiled a theft of goods worth nearly three million rands. An alarm battery failure report led our patrolmen to investigate Access Freight International, Maple Road, Pomona and at 9pm on the 24th, the workers at the business were discovered tied up in a container. The police and flying squad were alerted and in a rapid response joint operation the perpetrators were brought to a crushing halt. It transpires that the gang was well organised for the robbery, and arrived in two trucks and a taxi; it is believed that there were eighteen of them and all armed. The robbery went off smoothly, and they escaped into the night with around five hundred flat screen televisions, no doubt secure in their victory. Alas for them the police and security in this area are on the ball, and before the night was over four of the robbers were in custody. So far the police have not only recovered all of the stolen property, but the number of arrests is already up to seven, with the investigation proceeding at speed. The comments from all parties involved in the

operation were highly positive. Said one of our patrolmen, “The police were very good and extremely helpful – they were alert and efficient, and so we were able to recover all the stolen property”. The Kempton Park SAPS Media spokesperson, Capt. Mtshali, commented, “It was a joint operation between the police, flying squad and security, and the vigilance of the men meant that we made arrests not only at the house where they had stored some of the TV’s, but on the road too.” He continued, “We give the Kempton Park police, the flying squad and the community security a thumbs up! “Justice will prevail when we have such alert men and women working hand in hand!” Alas, when we tried to contact the owners, they declined to comment on the incident. Clearly this is a warning to criminals out there – the police, the community and the security forces in this area are dedicated and effective, and are willing to work hand in hand and do what it takes to make the streets safer. Well done to you all – you have done yourselves proud!

White boys stealing Age no barrier to good our manhole covers! sense! By Philip Allebone

R

eports have been coming in fast and furious over the last couple of months about manhole covers being stolen. This is occurring mainly in the Farrarmere, Northmead and Rynfield areas. The majority of reports indicate that these manhole covers are being stolen by young white males. Residents report that these guys are driving around our suburbs, stop their vehicle, jump out and lift the manhole cover, jump back into their vehicle and drive off. Unfortunately these guys are long gone by

the time it is reported to the Control Room and our patrolman gets to the scene. It is suspected that these manhole covers are being sold for scrap to feed their drug habit. The main problem is that they have absolutely no regard for human safety and leave behind a danger to the public by way of a hole in the ground where the cover should be. This is hazardous for young and old alike. Children are likely to want to investigate, to see what is down the hole and could easily fall in and be seriously hurt.

FCP

Personal safety is greatly enhanced by having good sense, and a nine year old girl has shown that age is no barrier to having it. The girl was apparently at a local restaurant with some adults that did not have very much good sense. When they chose to leave, she saw that they were heavily intoxicated, and refused to get into the vehicle with them. Instead, she remained at the restaurant, thus fulfilling the first rule of safety by being in a busy and public place, where she knew the barman, thus fulfilling the second rule of safety by being with a known adult, and then, truly demonstrating her wisdom, she had the presence of mind to call the RCP Control Room number, thus showing that she had the foresight to make sure that she had the number ready for any emergency that she might encounter. Our patrolman arrived on the scene and made

RCP

sure that the girl was all right. Then when her parents arrived, he confirmed their identity with the girl and by ID document, thus ensuring that she was going home safely with her real parents. This incident shows that child safety can be very easily improved with good sense and a little preparation. The fact that the girl could call in when she was alone meant that she could be sure that a responsible adult could come and keep her safe until she was able to make a plan to get home. Her presence of mind in keeping the number available meant that she had a lifeline in an emergency. Her good sense kept her out of a vehicle with intoxicated adults. These small things have ensured that she is safe – you too can keep yourself and your children safe with good sense and a few critical numbers! Remember, stupidity can be a crime too – it can easily cause injury and death of yourself or others and you can avoid it so easily. Think first – live longer.

One problem that is endemic to any town you may come across, and is basically a certainty in any city, is squatters. Now it is all very well to be PC about it, and while it may be true that everyone has a right to live somewhere, we have to accept the fact that there are reasons that squatting is illegal, and these reasons make themselves manifest in a number of ways that escalate and become worse as time goes on. A complaint that came to our attention recently shows the difficulties involved rather graphically, and we are forced to ask what can or will be done about these things, as clearly the situation is only going to get worse. The situation in question is the informal settlement that has sprung up in Nature Road. The first problem that is encountered is the question of who the land belongs to, and why it has not been maintained by them. If the plot is privately owned, then surely the police should remove the illegal squatters from the property, as they are essentially trespassing and have no right to be there. If the land belongs to the municipality, then there seems to be much the same question. If the land is not zoned for residence, then the people are trespassing and should be removed by the police. If the land has been made for residence then it is the responsibility of the municipality to provide the necessary means to control the land, the sewerage, the water and the electricity, and of course, the payment of rates. Whoever owns the land - clearly there is no provision made for any kind of health and safety or municipal services, as there is rubbish dumped on the road, open sewerage and an evil stench. Rodents are becoming a serious

problem in the area, and open wiring, the result of illegal theft of electricity, is now a hazard for the people in the area, especially the small children. The area is also a fire hazard, and last winter five of the shacks burned down, and it is clear that the ‘housing’ there now is just as much at risk of fire. Further difficulties arise from the presence of people here, as the crime rate in the area has risen sharply, with petty theft up to armed home invasions. The crime is made worse by the fact that there is illegal trading going on, and ‘taverns’ are selling alcohol, leading to drunkenness and more crime. It is clear that the presence of people in this informal settlement is detrimental to the area, and owing to the health hazards, is detrimental even to themselves, and so we have to pose the question of what is being done about this? Who is it that is responsible to do something? Why are the people who SHOULD do something not doing anything? Is the problem the result of laziness, or confusion over who is responsible for these things, and will it simply be left to wreak havoc while everyone turns away saying that it is not there job to deal with it? SOMEONE is in charge of these issues, and they need to come forward and make a plan, otherwise the problem will persist, get worse, and we will be left with a mess that will cost a great deal of money to repair. The situation depicted has been reported by the residents of the surrounding area through the proper channels, and the Ward Councillor has put the matter forward to the relevant departments, but as yet no action has been taken to resolve the issue that we know of.

When trickster god Loki (Thor’s half-brother) steals an energy source called Tesseract with the intention of opening an inter-dimensional portal for his army to take over earth, Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) is forced to put the biggest egos and strongest superheros in the same team and hope they get along well enough to save the world. Being a big fan of a number of comic-to-film adaptions, I thought I would have an advantage in understanding the plot but it is complicated with a lot of scientific jargon and throwbacks to films gone by. But it was easily forgivable thanks to the great chemistry the impressive cast have together. Ro bert Downey jnr returns as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as Thor, Chris Evans is Captain America and Mark Ruffalo takes over from Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/ Hulk. Scarlett Johansson plays the alluring but strong Black Widow while Jeremy Renner joins the cast as ultra-archer Hawkeye. As we have seen in the Iron Man films, Downey jnr’s charm and wit shines through in every scene. In particular, his moments with Bruce Banner and Captain America are entertaining. But a lot of the laughs come through demigod Thor fighting with Hulk.
