Striking a Blow Against Organised Crime By Philip Allebone

A

ny policeman will tell you – organised crime is the hardest to make headway against, and thus it is always a great pleasure when a serious blow is dealt to the criminal element, and something positive happens. This was the case in the early hours of the morning of Thursday 14 June 2012. Daveyton SAPS had responded to a report from a private investigator in connection with a suspicious and possibly stolen truck parked in Allience Street, near Majuteni Square. One of our patrol vehicles was conducting a routine patrol nearby at the time, and our patrolmen, Roelof and Marcus were approached by members of the SAPS, requesting assistance. Our patrolmen were only too happy to oblige. The truck in question had indeed been stolen recently, and was believed to have originated in the Isando area. Unfortunately the truck had already been stripped of its shipment. Further observations led to an investigation of the adjacent warehouse premises. On instructions from Daveyton SAPS, our patrolmen were able to break the lock

to gain access. Inside the warehouse buildings stacks of boxes of stolen property were uncovered, not only from the company the Private Investigator represented, but others too. Clearly this was the stockpile of organised crime in the area. The stock was, of course, immediately confiscated by the police, and they will be making further investigations into the ownership of the property, with some serious questions. It can be very difficult to make headway with these criminal experts, but we have a number of experts on the side of law. As long as the criminals keep stealing, the police, our community patrolmen, and people like this Private Investigator, will be on their trail. Sadly there was no-one on the property at the time, but we know that they are out there, and they will be found. The SAPS members did a thorough job of gathering evidence on scene and hopefully, after further investigation, will be able to make some arrests. Well done to everyone, particularly our Precinct patrolmen, who assisted in uncovering this criminal storage facility.

Where do you keep your handbag?

T

here has been a sudden increase once again in incidents of ‘smash and grab’ at offramps in recent weeks, with a number of ladies travelling alone losing their handbags. While we have asked in the past for women not to leave their handbags on the passenger seat, this continues. However, it has also come to our attention that some ladies keep their handbags under the seat – not as safe as you may think. The criminals have realised that if there is

no handbag visible, the chances are that it is hidden under the seat. When they break the window of the vehicle, they immediately reach down and grab it from its hiding place. It takes only a few seconds. We can only suggest that while driving you keep your handbag in the boot of your car. Ladies, when travelling alone at night, please be extra cautious when leaving the highway and/or stopping at robots. This is when you are at your most vulnerable.

Pretoria Road Accident By Philip Allebone A taxi travelling on Pretoria Road at around 6:20 on the morning of Monday 18 June hit a man on a motorbike as he was going to work, knocking him off the bike and injuring him severely. The circumstances surrounding the accident are yet unclear, and it is such that either vehicle could have been the cause of the accident. It seems that none of the occupants of the taxi were injured, but the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries. Our paramedics were onscene and it was necessary for the patient to be airlifted

A Fall from Grace W

BNCP

By Philip Allebone

ednesday 13th June, a man fell through the roof of an abandoned Church in Benoni Road. He was airlifted by helicopter to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital by ER 24 with trauma to the head and multiple broken bones. According to friends of the family he passed away this morning. It seems that the man was attempting to get at cable and light fittings in the building while under the influence of some medication, and as a result of misuse of the medication suffered a heart attack, which caused the fall. The fall, which was at least ten metres, was onto a concrete floor, and the resultant injury

has since proved fatal. The man who dragged him to the street initially told people that the man was a victim of a hit and run car accident, which was not true. The matter is being investigated further by the police. The building has been a problem in the past, as it is believed that it has been used as a hideout for criminals, and there is evidence on the property of cable burning. The building is structurally not very sound, as it has stood there abandoned for a number of years, and clearly poses a threat to the community in several ways, as this fatality has shown.

Illegal Dumping By Philip Allebone Councillor Mary Goby has again put out a call to people to stop illegally dumping their rubbish around Benoni. In a recent incident the official dump was less than a kilometre away from where the person dumped their rubbish. Due to the fact that this rubbish was identifiable, the people responsible are known by name and address. We would remind residents that there is up to a R2000.00 fine for illegal dumping, and you may be sure it will be followed up. We are quick to moan when the town is rubbish filled and dirty, but it seems that the cause of the problem is us! It seems, also, that Farramere has a problem in this area, as this is the second incident in a few days, so please, control your own area – if

FCP

you see someone dumping rubbish illegally, stop them or report them. After all, it is your living area that they are messing up.

Cutting it Close Recently we did an article on the long grass next to Bill Davey Drive, Farrarmere, and at that time we were warned by a resident that it was a fire hazard, as well as a crime hazard, and that it needed to be cut. It seems that she was right in what she said, because the area has indeed caught fire. Luckily the council had already cut the grass so that the spread of the fire has been halted before it reached the houses. Flames on the vlei just the other side of the tree line swept two meters in the air

as the dry reeds blazed. It was easy to see that had the long grass, which was nearly two metres itself, not been cut, then the fire risk would have been much more serious. Thank you to the council for the cutting of the grass. You have potentially saved property and even lives there. Fires are a serious risk at present, as we can see in our communities, so please be careful, and make sure the grass is kept short around you!

Cable Theft Again! By Philip Allebone Evidence has been found of cable theft in a field in Benoni Road, where long strips of the plastic covering and its inner aluminium sheath are lying bereft in the sunshine. Clearly the theft was recent, as the aluminium is not weathered, and clearly this place has been used to strip cable in the past, as old evidence of cable theft is lying there too. The thick bundles of wire are heavy, even without the copper in them, and it shows that the operation to get the pieces to the

field is not a job for one or two people alone, but for a number and with vehicles. The theft of copper is getting out of hand now, and something has to be done, but somehow it keeps on happening, and apparently right under people’s noses. If the community will not report when they see things, then the task of catching the perpetrators is made nearly impossible. It is time the community did something to be heard, or else there will be no cables, and no one will hear us at all.

Following our AGM earlier this year, a new committee has been elected for the coming year. It is the intention of the RCP committee to become much more involved with our Sector Crime Forum and Ward Committee.

Various issues have already been brought to our attention and are being investigated, but we believe there are many more that we are not yet aware of. To this end, RCP has set up an email address where residents can report issues that require attention. If you have anything to report,

RCP

please send details via email to rcp@ gmail.com.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Directors: Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath

Cast: Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith and Chris Rock The third entry in the animated Madagascar franchise finds the tight-knit group of animals joining a traveling circus in order to get back home. Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer), and Gloria the Hippopotamus (Jada Pinkett Smith) continue their efforts to get back to New York after escaping to Africa. However, dependent on the mechanical know-how of the notorious chimpanzees and penguins, their plan inevitably goes awry and they find themselves stranded in Monte Carlo, where they only manage to dodge animal controller Captain DuBois (Frances McDormand) by joining up with a traveling circus. Led by the respected old Siberian tiger Vitaly (Bryan Cranston), the circus has seen better days. However, during the course of a tour through a series of European cities that ends in the heart of London, Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria help Vitaly, Gia the jaguar (Jessica Chastain), and Stefano the sea lion (Martin Short) rediscover their passion for show business and reinvent circus performance.

Nikon Presents... Orphanage Fire Fun Sexual Assault Clinic

T

he 14th of June has marked a welcome change in the lives of the people at the Benoni Sexual Assault Clinic as Nikon officially handed over to them a special lens for their camera that is used to gather evidence in cases of child rape and molestation. The camera provides crucial evidence in the pursuit of justice, as it can take a long time for cases to proceed through the courts system, and as such the facts of a case can now be accurately recorded to ensure that the correct evidence is faithfully detailed.

Robin Malherbe, from the Nikon Africa Trust explained that, as a business, it has become part of Nikon’s interest to do something to uplift the community, and they have several areas that they have invested in for the good of the helpless and underprivileged “We at Nikon want to help organisations using our photographic background,” said Robin. Said Michelle from the Clinic, “You cannot know how much this will change and improve the lives of the victims that come here. It is huge for us!” Wiping a tear from her eye she showed us around the clinic and explained the aims and workings. They are focused strongly on the healing of the child and ensuring that justice can be found by the victims. To have a piece of equipment that will make sure that their cases have sufficient evidence of good quality in court is a godsend.

L

ately we have not been associating fire with something good, but this Saturday, 16 June, fire proved to be a very congenial thing indeed. In an effort to bring a little hope and love to some children that are in dire need of such human affection, the Ward Councillors for the DA gathered together and celebrated Youth Day with the children of the Greater Benoni Child Welfare. They entertained them with a fire dancing group from Angie’s Dance studio, who generously did their act gratis for the children. The display was followed by lunch and even cake, and we were treated to the surprising sight of the other side of being a Ward Councillor, as Gerrie Kriek, from Ward 27, handed round cake, and Mary Goby, Ward 28, Gary Scallan, PR Council to Ward 29, Colin Maudsley, CPF and Ward Committee for Ward 27, and Cecilia Morris, Western Extension Neighbourhood Watch were put to work doing dishes. They were aided in their endeavours by Marionel Kriek (14) and Jonathan Mare (12), who were there as part of their schools community service. Said Marionel, “I like to make people happy” We can safely say that the day did indeed make the children very happy, as they sat and watched the dancers with rapt attention,

clutching their new soccer balls that the DA sponsored. “We will always support this children’s home with functions like these,” said Councillor Kriek, “We have a Ward committee of ten members whose job it is to gather items for these sort of charity, but the need is endless, and there is so much that they still need to get. They are not supported by Lotto, or similar, yet, though we have submitted them for review, but they have a huge area that they cover, extending even beyond Benoni and the needs are often not met.” Heila v. Staden, the Director of the home, and Margaret Mthimkulu, the House Mother do a great job in keeping the children’s lives as normal as possible, even taking them to regular schools. You can always tell with children how they are being treated, when they are very young, as they hide nothing, and these little ones were happy, which shows that the house is well run and they are looked after. This is a good place, and they are doing a great job here, and we are very thankful to the Councillors from the DA for what they did – spare a thought for those who don’t have what you do, and for those who do their best to give those things to those without. Sometimes all they want is a little love.
