CAR THEFT WARNING

Delightful Dogs and Cheerful Children By Philip Allebone

T

he Boksburg North Police Station, represented in all their different incarnations as both SAPS and EMPD, legal and chaplains, detectives, and all, as part of their community outreach, entertained the residents of Huis Dien Bothma on Thursday 12 July with an impressive display from the dogs of the Police Dog Squad. The display was presented by Attie Fourie,

who was an excellent showman, but he was nevertheless upstaged by Raka and his companions. The dogs are, through their various specialities, able not only to assist the police in catching the criminals and bringing them down, but also to find nearly any illegal substance far quicker than any human could. The dogs delighted the residents of the home,

who were then taken inside for tea and cakes that were brought in especially for them by various volunteers. They were then treated to another display, this time a vocal one from the children of the grade R class of Kiddies Ark, lead by teacher Senet Rogers. The residents clearly enjoyed the show very much, and the cakes were a treat that they will

remember for some time. Counsellor Hilary Coke from the DA was there to assist with sorting the food out, and she explained that it can often be lonely for the old people in the home, and a treat like this makes them feel remembered and part of the community again. Well done to everyone involved. You have reminded us that community is more than just living in it.

From the Editor...

Every morning, my first task is to read, with amazement and often dismay, the incident reports received by our Control Room for the previous 24 hours. There are so many crimes that could be prevented, if only people would take a few moments extra time securing their personal possessions. As mentioned on numerous occasions in our newspaper, a prime example is the number of laptops, handbags, wallets and cell phones that are stolen out of motor vehicles, left in plain sight. I cannot for the life of me think why anyone would leave such valuables in their vehicles overnight, or indeed at any time, unattended. What causes me dismay is the number of people who, following a minor incident, do not want the police called out or to open a case. This, in effect, means that the crime stats submitted by the police are drastically under stated, and makes it look as if the crime in the

Cable

area is under control and there is no need for additional resources. What is the point of our patrolmen taking the time and trouble to come out to your property if you are not going to take the matter further? When a suspect is arrested, for whatever reason, there needs to be a complainant before a charge can be laid. If the owner of the property is not willing to open a case, the police have no alternative but to release the suspect. This is music to the criminals’ ear, as they then know that they are unlikely to get arrested in this part of the woods and will continue to plunder our homes without fear of retribution. OK, so it’s a schlep to have to make a statement, attend court proceedings etc, but at the end of the day we need to do this and get convictions, otherwise we are at the mercy of these thieves. So, please, do the right thing and let’s get these criminals off our streets.

Thieves

While doing patrols around 02h30 in the early hours of Saturday 14 July, our BNCP patrolman, Bruce, spotted five suspects stealing cable in Umtata Road (corner High Road), Brentwood Park. He reported into the Control Room and additional back-up vehicles were dispatched to the scene, taking up positions in surrounding streets.

arrested

On seeing our reaction vehicles arrive, the suspects fled in different directions, but some were not quick enough, resulting in two of the suspects being apprehended on Great North Road by our patrolman, Bruce, backed up by Henning and Dawie. Almost 200m of Telkom cable had been cut, some of which was recovered in High Road, and some in Great North Road, all of which were taken by SAPS to the police station. Well done guys. Thank you for being alert while patrolling our neighbourhoods.

SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE Boksburg North Communication Service MEDIA RELEASE 2012-07-09 VEHICLE CRUSHING Colonel Martin Van Nieuwenhuizen took up his post at Van Ryn Deep Vehicle Safeguarding Unit, three months ago. He is the Commander at this unit. They have a Compacting Machine at the unit, to crush the motor vehicles that are forfeited to the State. The motor vehicles were brought to the crusher with a fork lift. The compacting machine then lifted up each motor vehicle and placed it in the machine. The machine then crushed the vehicle and pressed it to a square of steel. After the vehicles were crushed, they were then escorted by Police vehicles to the Reclaim yard. There the vehicles were weighed and sold as second grade steel. This money then was deposited into the State’s account. During this week, one hundred and fifty vehicles were crushed. Well done to Colonel Van Nieuwenhuizen. RELEASED BY: Lieutenant Colonel J Du Toit, Boksburg North SAPS

A

t our recent JPBP meeting held on Wednesday 11 July 2012, we again discussed the environmental problem being experienced by businesses in Wankel Street, Jet Park. The problem emanates from Luxor Paint, where it is alleged that spillages are running out of their premises, across the street and into the stormwater system, which runs under other business in the street. Not only is this an environmental hazard, but there is a very real danger of fire, which would be catastrophic. The road itself has also been damaged by these spillages. This situation has been reported on several occasions and has been minuted at our

E T PA R K

PBP

meetings since last year, with no satisfactory action taken. We were advised that an inspection of the premises was conducted on 18 June 2012, and it was reported that Luxor are currently upgrading their offload and waste flow bin area to accommodate any possible spillages during offloading or liquid waste handling. Luxor apparently indicated that a proper bund wall would be constructed within three weeks to complete their pollution prevention actions at their Goods Receiving Entrance. Three weeks has come and gone and in fact a further spillage took place during the week prior to our meeting. This is totally unacceptable and something needed to be done. As a result, a full inspection of the premises by the relevant departments has been requested and is expected to take place as soon as possible.

SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE Boksburg North Communication Service MEDIA RELEASE 2012-07-12 WITNESSES NEEDED On 2012-07-01 there was a fatal motor vehicle accident along North Rand Road, at the intersection of Achor Street, Beyers Park, whereby a motor cycle collided with a BMW X5. Man Shot in Neck By Philip Allebone

Early in the evening of Monday 9 July in Cason, a man was shot in the neck in his car a short distance from his home. The man, who was in Basson Street at the time, managed to walk more than a block to his home in some flats and called for help. Witnesses said that they heard the shouting and thought he might be drunk, but when they looked out they saw he was drenched in blood. A quick thinking neighbour pressed her panic button and the CMS Patrol Vehicle responded. An ambulance was called in and the man was taken to hospital after telling the Patrolman, Jan, that he had been hijacked. Jan then went in search of the vehicle and found it in Basson Street, to which he directed

the police. The vehicle showed evidence of what appeared to have been two shots being fired, there being a bullet lodged in the door and a casing on the ground outside. Blood indicated that this was the place that the victim had been shot and the trail down the road shows where he had to walk. The street where the car was found seemed to be a quiet one after hours, and it was the ideal place for a hijacking. Last reported, the man was stable and doing fine, despite his injury, and the police are investigating the matter further. Well done for the prompt and efficient response to both CMS and the Boksburg Police.

Blood for Madiba Day

The DA, in partnership with the SA National Blood Service, is celebrating with Ward 23 and other members of the DA by donating blood. The SANBS is in need of a great deal of blood,

and since this critical service is responsible for saving the lives of many, many people, they want to show their support of the Legacy this great man has left by donating theirs, as well as inviting the public to come down and join them in saving many more. The date is Thursday 19th July 2012 at the Northmead Blood Donor Centre, No. 42, 14th Avenue in Northmead, The time is between 10:00 and 19:00. If you want to show your support, then come on down and donate your blood, and remember to make sure that you are counted – tell the staff that you are doing so in support of this drive! See you there!

Kempton Warehouse Robbery Case Postponed On the 10th of July, six men attempted to rob a warehouse in Kempton Park, holding the security at gunpoint. Unfortunately for the would-be robbers, one of the security guards was able to press the panic button, summoning the security company and the police.

As the six made an attempt to leave, they were apprehended by the police and taken into custody. A firearm, with live ammunition was recovered from the suspects. On the 12th July the six appeared in court, but the case was postponed until the 18th

How secure is your home? O n a daily basis our control room and patrolmen respond to quite a number of cases of burglary throughout our precinct area. Even though a home alarm system is a good way to keep your home safe, you can never be too careful when it comes to home security. Below are a number of tips that can be implemented at home which will encourage burglary prevention should your house become a criminal’s target. Burglary prevention tips: - Ensure that perimeter doors are fitted with adequate locks. The front door should have a safety chain or safety latch and, if the door has no vision panel, a door viewer. If keys to perimeter doors are lost replace the locks as soon as possible. - Ensure that all valuables and important documents are photocopied, authenticated by a Commissioner of Oath and securely locked away. - Fit suitable locks or bolts to all sliding doors to prevent them from being lifted off their tracks this is one of the most common method used by burglars on sliding doors and windows. - Windows should be fitted with adequate locks or burglar bars that cover all glass. - Install a safe for weapons and valuables -- duplicate house keys could be kept in this safe. - Make sure that your garage or tool shed is locked when not in use as would-be

intruders should not have access to any item that can be used as a weapon or burglary tool. - Ensure that all duplicate keys are locked away if not in use and do not leave keys in doors or make unnecessary copies. - Install outside lights that can be remotely controlled from inside the house. - Reduce all heavy bushes and shrubbery near your garage entrance and front door to reduce the possibility of those spots being used as a hiding place. - Always lock perimeter doors and close windows that are far away from where the family activity is centred. - At night, always lock perimeter doors and securely fasten windows. When sleeping lock inter-leading doors of those rooms that are unoccupied. - Do not leave curtains open at night as this allows observation into the house. - Do not go outside alone to investigate at night. - Do not open your door to any person without identifying them first. - Never admit to a stranger that you are alone. - If a repair-person is expected, do not allow entry unless identity has been checked through a vision panel or door viewer and with the company concerned. If you see suspicious vehicles, individuals or groups in your neighbourhood, contact the police on 10111 or the Community Control Room 0861 425 493

Wandering Free By Philip Allebone

O

n Wednesday 11 July a man was found wandering around the premises of the Gym in Lakefield Avenue. Alerting his security company, CMS, a patrolman (Jan) responded and searched the premises, finding the man in the toilets. The police were called and the man was arrested, as per what might be expected, and the owner asked to lay a charge of trespassing against the man. The policeman that responded then told the owner that cases of trespass were no longer opened in situations where there was no actual damage to the property, and that he would take the man to the station for profiling and release. This is somewhat confusing for us in that as far as we can find out from other policemen that we asked, trespassing is one case, and damage to property and/or breaking and entering is something else.

Also we were told that of course there is a case of trespassing that can be laid in a case like this. It seems that the policeman did not want to make a formal arrest and lay a charge for some unknown reason. To add to the issue, the same man was allegedly seen in the area again, and an attempted car theft from the Gym happened the same afternoon. We have, as yet, not been able to confirm this with hard evidence, but it does seem somewhat worrying that people can wander on to a property as and when they desire with no fear of arrest, and when the information given by the police in question is not accurate, it make our confidence in the police take a knock. There are many police out there that do a great job, and work very hard to make our lives safer, and when they are let down by one person like this, it is something of an insult to the work they do

Bite back at bugs By Philip Allebone

With all the changeable weather and the swelteringly hot days followed by rain, the insects are having a field day and breeding like mad. Naturally we are the ones to suffer for it, and after being bitten a few times by errant spiders and having my typing disturbed by flies that seem to want to investigate my brain via my ears, I decided that enough was enough – I want a little peace. The problem, of course, is that when you have a two year old, poisons are not an option, as she will certainly try to eat them, no matter how many times that you warn her, so I pulled out my books and started to hunt for something that might offer a more gentle solution. As it turns out, my wife beat me to it, as she tried an old family recipe that seems to work very well indeed. We must, of course, thank the Australians for this one, despite their being

mortal enemies on the rugby field, but that’s fine, because like us South Africans, off the field they also are keen on beer and a braai, no matter what they call it. The answer is in a largish candle that will burn down with a well in it. Basically it must just be a fat candle, so that there will be sides of wax around the wick. Into this well you pour a little eucalyptus oil, and viola the goggas flee. If you use herbs a lot, of course, you may have a salt burner, which means that you can just put the oil in that. The smell of the oil is rather pleasant, and the oil is easy to get at most pharmacies or health shops, and it has the advantage of not being poisonous, so if little hands do get it, it won’t cause more than an upset stomach, as you need very little. Give the oil a try, and see what you can do to make your New Year just that much more relaxing.

Armed robbery leaves owner injured By René Vest The owner of a business was assaulted and his staff robbed in Apex at 6:00am on Monday 16th July. Four suspects pretending to be policemen waited for the owner of Styrofoam Africa Containers in Apex to open up the premises before attacking him and robbing the staff. A CMS security guard at a nearby premises became aware of what was taking place, and pressed the panic button, alerting the control room to the emergency. The Apex Precinct vehicle, as well as other backup vehicles and our paramedics/ER24 were immediately despatched, and who promptly arrived at the scene. At the same time, the

ABP

Fennel

police were notified of the incident. Allegedly the men beat the owner and tied him and some of the staff members up. They stole R300, a computer, 16 cell phones and keys to a white VW polo, although they did not take the car. The suspects then poured boiling water over the owner to pressure him into handing over a larger sum of money but there was no more on the premises. They then fled the scene. The owner refused medical assistance and preferred to drive himself to the hospital where he was treated for injuries before being discharged later in the day. The owner said that if there are robberies in the area then people should be made more aware of it so as to be more prepared. The Precinct Crime Stats indicate that there has been one armed robbery reported per month recently. The police are still investigating the crime.

The Herb of Digestion

By Philip Allebone

Fennel is the Puritan’s herb, called so as it was the Puritans in the ‘New World’ who made a name for them in the healing world. They called it the “meeting seeds” as they chewed it before their church services. The more charitable claim that they used it to suppress the appetite during the long meetings, while the less kind claim that they used whiskey to fortify themselves for the meetings and the fennel masked the odour on their breath. It is true, however, that they used fennel as a digestive aid, and indeed, this has been the primary use of the herb since the time of that Pharoes. Hippcrates prescribed the herb for infant colic, while four hundred years later Dioscorides proscribed it as a digestive aid and to promote milk in feeding mothers. Pliny took it a stage further, and wrote that as snakes rubbed against it to shed their skin and clear the milkiness from their eyes, it could cure blindness. In India, the Ayurvedic

healers used it as a digestive aid. Fennel was an approved herb in the royal medicine gardens, as Charlemagne ordered it cultivated, and Edward I and his house consumed more than 4 kilos of the herb each month. Even the Church approved of fennel as an appetite suppressant on feast days. It was even said to protect against witchcraft. The real facts about fennel’s healing properties while slightly more prosaic, is that it is an anti spasmodic, promotes the secretions of bile and expels gas. All in all it means that it is an excellent digestive aid, assists in the calming of an upset stomach, infant colic and even I.B.S. Fennel also helps the reduction of retained water. Fennel adds a pleasant liquorish flavour to foods and even makes an alternative to a cup of tea. If you need to settle a troublesome stomach, a teaspoon of bruised seeds in a cup of boiling water steeped for 10 minutes will do the job.

Bad apples in Orchard

W

hilst the following arrest took place outside our boundaries, it is pleasing to be able to report successes taking place in other suburbs and the excellent job being done by SAPS members.

3 August 2012

On Thursday 12 July 2012 at approximately 15h00 three African males of late twenties were arrested for house robbery at Orchards (Suburb within Norwood SAPS precinct). These suspects gained entry into the property by jumping over the wall where the owner, a seventy five year old female, together with her helper, were tied up before the suspects ransacked the house. While they were busy collecting some valuables, the alarm signalled their security company and the patrol vehicle was despatched to attend the alarm. On their arrival they discovered that it was actually a house robbery in progress. The suspects ran in different directions and jumped into the neighbours’ property in order to evade the arrest, but the backup given by

fellow security officers, as well as members of the police, ensured that the three suspects were caught in a short space of time. After the suspects were caught, they alleged that they came from different areas in Gauteng, they speak to each other telephonically and once the plan is concluded, they go out to execute it, It also came to light that the suspects initially were four in number, but the fourth suspect was sitting in a getaway car and had driven off when they saw security approaching and after alerting those inside the premises. Police are currently tracing the fourth suspect but he had not yet been arrested at the time of going to press. Seen in the picture are three suspects, cuffed with disposable cuffs, and Constable Ronald Chuene of Norwood SAPS, attached to visible policing, who was among SAPS members who gave backup when the complaint came through. a steaming cup of hot chocolate would be a welcome addition to the menu. The seating in the spacious, earthy restaurant is comfortable and tables are set far enough apart to allow privacy. The staff are attentive, yet avoid approaching or asking the usual annoying questions when one’s mouth is full. Great service, comfy, cozy and a wonderful way to start a cold winters morning!

With the winter chills snapping at our fingers and toes, it is harder than ever to ensure that you look like a million bucks, and with the sneezes and sniffles as an added bonus, feeling great is hard too! The only response is to get out there and get yourself revitalized with some of the hotter therapies, steam up your skin to give it that glow and cleanse your body with some herbal teas, then off to the shops to make sure that you have the perfect boots for that perfect coat. Looking the best can be a great deal of fun, and while the gloves might hide those funky nails, they do say that you are what you wear! Beauty is in presentation, so make sure that you are at your best and fight the chills in the only way a lady should.

Driving Schools By Philip Allebone and Mary Goby Ward 28 Councillor

N

ot that long ago we published an article on the driving school problem in Western Extension, in the hope that something could be done to somehow regulate the congestion that the sheer number of driving schools causes. Unfortunately this has not happened, and in fact it has become even worse, with over thirty five driving schools, with approximately 3 vehicles per school, being found to use this rather small area to teach their students. The problem with this stems from the fact that these driving schools are mainly for trucks, rather than light motor vehicles. The students can often be found on people’s verges hanging around and waiting for their class, offering a unique opportunity for criminal elements to blend in and check out the neighbourhood. Furthermore, they allegedly go through people’s post boxes and help themselves

to newspapers and any reading material they want and then discard into the drainage system. These students have no ablution facilities and are using residents’ walls and pavements. A further addition to the problem is that you have untrained drivers (by which we may read incapable) driving heavy trucks, with sometimes wild abandon, down the roads and blocking the traffic, even during the peak hours. Now we recognise the need to train people how to drive a truck, but this is not the problem. The problem is having so many in such a small area in Western Extension has become a hazard to other road users and residents alike. However the major concern is that we have two educational facilities for young children in the vicinity and many of these learners drive too close to the schools, and something needs

to be done before there is a serious accident. There are also a lot of businesses in the area, especially places of refreshment, and these learners are driving very close to the patrons’ vehicles.

The owners of the Driving Schools need to come to some kind of compromise and only have a few driving schools in the area at once. Why can’t they split up and use other suburbs as well.

Warnings of Theft The promised signage has now gone up at Life The Glynnwood Hospital in Benoni, warning the public that this is, in fact, a high

risk area for car thefts. Mary Goby, DA Ward Councillor, pointed out that the problem is real, but there is a limit to what can be done about the danger without the awareness and participation of the public. The signs, therefore, are the way to get people to be aware that there is a problem here and to take precautionary measures.

If going wrong, don’t worry, they can’t last long either. 5. Old friends are gold! New friends are diamonds! If you get a diamond, don’t forget the gold! Because to hold a diamond you always need a base of gold! 6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, “Relax, sweetheart. It’s just a bend, not the end. 7. When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities. When GOD doesn’t solve your problems, HE has faith in your abilities. 8. A blind person asked St Anthony: “Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?” He replied: “Yes, losing your vision!” 9.
