Heavy rains cause havoc
T
he heavens opened up late afternoon on Monday 23 January 2012, bringing a deluge of rain to our streets in the East Rand, bringing traffic to a standstill in most major roads in Benoni, Boksburg and Kempton Park. Hundreds of motorists were caught in this downpour, which continued to wreak havoc during peak hour traffic, as people tried to make their way home from work. In some cases, the roads became virtually impassable and some had to be closed completely. Further rains are forecast for this week and motorists are urged to drive carefully. The only consolation is that no criminal activity was reported to our Control Room that evening.

During December 2011, the number of incidents of crime reported was relatively low, and whilst there were some incidents, we are pleased to note that there were no major incidents such as armed robbery or hijacking reported to our Control Room. Our BBM group continues to work extremely well, and has proven to be a great form of communication. We believe this has played a major role in keeping crime to a minimum in Atlasville, with residents reporting anything that looks suspicious. If there are any other residents in Atlasville who have a Blackberry and wish to be a part of this communication system, please email your name, street address, cell No and BBM Pin No. to our Chairman at kevin.froneman@emerson. com. This BBM group is utilised purely for crime related issues and not general chitchat. Domestic workers walking in our streets on the way to work continue to be easy targets for street muggings. The perpetrators are quite often in a vehicle, which stops suddenly beside them and one of the suspects will jump

he Bredell/ P o m o n a Community Precinct Annual General Meeting took place late last year and whilst the turnout was pretty disappointing, with very few residents braving the rain to attend, it was still a very informative meeting for those who did attend. A new committee was elected (thanks to the current committee for volunteering their services once again) and we welcome the return of Nolene Clare-Talbot to the fold. Our Ward Councillor, Mr Pieter Henning gave us an idea of work-in-progress in the Ward, as well as a general overview of future plans for Bredell and Pomona. Our SA Police Service Sector Manager, Warrant Officer Dibanisa attended and was praised by the community for his crime prevention efforts in Bredell and Pomona. The SAPS patrol cars are a very welcome
sight, and the community was urged to make use of the cell phone numbers to contact them directly should they need any assistance. Warrant Officer Dibanisa in turn sang the praises of our Precinct Patrolmen who are also active in Pomona and Bredell and have assisted in crime prevention and work hand in hand with SAPS. Manny from our Management Company gave us a wonderful presentation on the long list of services offered to our members, from alarm monitoring to vehicle towing services. There are also some exciting new products in the pipeline. The community was encouraged to report problems in their residential area to either the Ward Councillor or the BCP committee members. Relevant phone numbers were distributed. Mr Lani van der Walt was subsequently elected as the new Chairman of the BCP committee, with Mr Pieter Henning as his Vice Chairman. Mrs Sandra Henning was once again elected as Secretary.
Well, here we are again at the beginning of another year! May we wish all members of our Community a prosperous year and hope that we can work together once again to curb crime and rid our suburb of criminals. House break-ins, theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles remain a constant concern for us. It is extremely difficult to catch these guys as they prey on us when we are at work or asleep. Their networks are so intricate and advanced that they know at all times where the vehicles are, especially our patrol vehicles, as well as the SAPS Sector vehicles. We really need to be more aware of our surroundings and report anything suspicious. We had an incident in December where a man was killed in Farrarmere as a result of a hijacking and with more investigation and asking of questions, it came to light that these guys could have been seen before, but were not reported. We cannot stress enough how important one phone call could be in saving somebody’s life. Alphen Park was also hit hard by the death of a
man in an armed robbery at home, so we can see from this that the criminals are not scared to shoot. If you retaliate, they will not think twice to shoot you or a family member. Within the next month, we will be giving you more info on the closure and what the next phase will entail, so that this system can be put into place finally. Thank you to all the people who have been involved in the process of getting mandate forms from the Community, often giving up their family time to be out on the streets over the week-ends. Please also update your details, it is extremely important, as the Control Room needs to contact you in cases of emergencies, break-ins etc and it makes the system fail if the correct details are not on the system. A big thank you to those of you who have sent in updated details. For everyone’s info, we have 2 SAPS Sector vehicles. We fall under Sector 4 in the Sector Policing, which encompasses Farrarmere, Alphen Park and Goedeburg. The cell numbers that are in the vehicles are 071 675 6720 and 071 675 6721. These phones are in the vehicles at all times and you are allowed to phone these numbers at any time. Let’s hope that 2012 brings everyone much joy and that we can have a year of less crime and more good times.

Stolen sheep recovered In the early morning hours of Friday 30 December 2011, members of Crystal Park police were patrolling in Ninth Road, Marister, when they spotted a suspicious looking vehicle. They stopped the vehicle, and found 4 sheep at the back of the bakkie, all tied up. There were three persons in the vehicle, and after questioning them, they could not give any explanation as to whom the sheep belonged to. The three persons, all from Ivory Park, were arrested for stock theft, and detained at the Crystal Park police station. At about 07:30 the owner of the sheep came
to the police station to report a case of stock theft, and to his surprise he was informed that the sheep had been found in Marister. The owner was able to identify his sheep, and had all the documents that corresponded with the tags on the sheep. The case is being investigated by the stock theft unit of Cullinan.

Illegal substance CCP seized On Wednesday 29 December 2011, members of the north east rand dog unit were following up on information, which lead them to an address in Crystal Park. Upon arrival they found a Nigerian man who claimed that he was visiting his brother. The police members searched the house, and found an illegal substance (CAT) to a street value of R1 500-00. The police also found a plane ticket to Nigeria, which it is believed belongs to the brother. At this stage the brother is still missing. The suspect was arrested, and detained at
Crystal Park SAPS, and charged for being in possession of Illegal drugs. At this stage the case is still being investigated, and more arrests are expected to follow. Seen here is a photo of the Police members from the Dog unit with the illegal substance.

Hostel part 3 Hostel III opens with a nerdy college student walking in on an Eastern European couple in a hotel room. Looking through the musical journey of South Africa in 2011, it has been a successful year for our artists. new artists venturing into different genres, our artists doing international world tours, international artists touring south Africa, events promoting upcoming artists, music videos being realised and not to forget the MTN South African Music Awards and also the Metro FM awards. Soul sensation Lira embarked on an international journey, followed by Pop/Rock group The Parlotones touring Australia and European countries as well as America. Pop/Rock culture took the season by storm when London based Roxette came to perform in different events, this featured artists such as Prime Circle, Kinky Robots, aKing, and many more. The OppiKoppi event was a successful one as always as it features the who’s who of musicians in the game- Pop Group Jamali, Afrikaans singer Nianel and Chris Chameleon were some of the entertainers there. The Hip Hop industry was taken by storm when

The Antwoord showed up in their hip hop/rock pop mix genres, AKA, L-Tido, Morale and J R were all over the show. International Hip Hop Artists Lil Wayne and Drake came to the SA, their 2 day performances were filled with love from the group Jozi and other artists. Wattville hip hop artist Hydro has been signed at Zar Entertainment and being featured in almost every mixtape released the past year. Uplifting the pop culture is the Mnet television show Idols, which has been introducing stars for the past years. Idols runner up Lloyd Cele made his performance at the lakeside mall – as part of his 2011 album promotion. Benoni Bencity hosted a Dance, Rapp and Sing competition called P.U.S.H (Putting U Steps Higher) event in Daveyton, with a turnover of all the aspiring artists from the East. After all the success acquired in 2011 lets hope 2012 is going to be bigger and all our East Rand Artists will grow and realise their dreams and successes in the music and performing arts.

t is almost guaranteed that, if you participate in the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) and do well, you will achieve academic success at university. Prof Nic Heideman, chairman of the SAMO Committee and retired associate professor of Rhodes University, explains why: “Maths competitions develop a student’s thinking as well as problem solving skills which form the basis for training of future engineers and scientists.” According to Heideman not all learners who do well in maths competitions are considered good at maths by their high school teachers. The reason for this could be that the brighter learners are bored by doing lots of tedious and routine exercises. He continued by saying that maths competitions, such as the SA Maths Olympiad, are not only for the gifted student. “Just like sport and music, maths can be enjoyed by anyone.” Maths at school is often simply a matter of learning how to, for example, multiply. Learners will practice their multiplying skill through a number of exercises and every so often learners can achieve fair results without really understanding the subject. Olympiad Maths is focussed more on putting ideas together to solve problems using maths and also using everything else that the learner has read, learnt and experienced. Not only does participation in the SA Maths Olympiad prepare you for tertiary studies but it also exposes you to possible bursaries to continue your studies. The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) awarded bursaries to three matric students based on their results during the second round of the 2011 SAMO. Khomo Khomotso Godley obtained two distinctions and has been accepted at the University of Johannesburg to Study B.Com Accounting. • Ndzonda Siyabonga Elia obtained
five distinctions and has been accepted at the University of Cape Town to study B.Sc Astronomy. • Mukhavhuli Gundo Victor obtained six distinctions and has been accepted Wits University to study B.Sc Actuarial Science. Taking part in the SA Maths Olympiad, especially when you have progressed to the third round, does however take up large amounts of time, says Sean Wentzel who matriculated with 10 distinctions after bringing home a silver medal from the 2011 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) as well as being one of the senior medallists in last year’s SAMO. “Olympiads require that students spend long periods away from school, be it for training or competitions. This could ultimately have a negative impact on school results if you are not willing to go the extra mile.” Ashraf Moolla, who was the country’s best achiever in the 2011 matric exams as well as a member of South Africa’s IMO team and a 2011 SAMO medallist, says: “There is no magical secret to doing well.
