RCP 2 3 6 Toy Run takes Benoni by storm

W

ELDERLY WOMEN DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT

hat a sight as literally hundreds and hundreds of bikers swarmed into John Barrable Hall on Sunday 27 November 2011 as part of the annual National Toy Run. It was just awesome to see all these bikers with teddies and toys strapped to their back as they rode in. Even ‘Father Christmas’ arrived. This is the first time this event has been held in Benoni and we should feel proud

to be a part of such a charitable event. Bikers from all over Gauteng took part and the day was extremely well organised and, to the best of our knowledge, went off without a hitch, with members of EMPD being out in full force to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. No matter where you looked there were just bikes, bikes and more bikes and the toys just poured in. There were stalls aplenty,

as well as a kiddies entertainment area and live entertainment for adults. The Toy Run Company was founded in 1996 as a section 21 company. The directors, organising committee and the distributing Round Tables work as volunteers and expect no remuneration for services rendered. The aim of Toy Run is to improve and enhance the image of motorcyclists and to collect and distribute toys

and gifts to less privileged children up to the age of 18 years. The Toy Run is synonymous with a great day out and comprises of entertainment, stalls including food stands and events. The only entrance fee charge is a toy for the less fortunate. Judging by the attendance, it certainly seems that this event was a huge success.

From the Editor Well, this past week has been extremely busy as far as criminal activity is concerned, particularly in Farrarmere and Atlasville, with Farrarmere experiencing the highest number of housebreakings reported in one month this year. While we normally have a number of incidents of theft of gate motor, within the last few days the criminals are removing the cover from the gate motor and stealing the battery. As we get closer and closer to Christmas, there has been a marked increase in crime in virtually all areas, so we urge everyone to

be vigilant and alert. Most people will start doing their Christmas shopping in the next few weeks. Ladies, please make sure you look after your handbags, particularly if you are on an escalator. Shopping Centres get so busy at this time of the year, which makes it easy for the criminal element. Many people are concentrating on what to buy for family and friends that they don’t pay too much attention to what (or who) is going on around them. Wishing you all safe shopping.

Elderly woman dies in accident Rynfield, Benoni 25 November 2011 14:30] What appears to have been a head on collision at the corners of Pretoria and Malherbe Streets in Rynfield in Benoni has left an elderly woman with fatal injuries. Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the elderly woman was trapped in her seat in the Toyota Corolla, having suffered such severe injuries during the collision, that there was nothing further that could be done for her and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, who had been driving the car, was able to get out of the driver’s side, and was immobilised onto a back support board before being taken to hospital by ambulance. He was in a stable condition throughout. The man driving the VW sedan was not physically injured and

he refused further treatment from paramedics. He would be removed from the scene using private transport. The cause of the fatal collision is not known, but police who attended the scene would investigate. Vanessa Jackson, ER24

Be careful what you throw away! A scary discovery was made recently when our chairman, Warwick Manning, was asked to accompany a resident through the veld area in Bonaero Park. After walking some distance, they came across an informal settlement area which was littered with bits and pieces as well as correspondence relating to residents in other suburbs such as Farrarmere and Atlasville. We are aware that people walk the streets and go through the garbage bags on rubbish collection days. What has come to light is that sometimes they take the whole bag and sift through it at their leisure. Please be careful what you put in your garbage

BPCP

bags. Items such as bank statements, receipts etc should rather be shredded. Another issue raised by our chairman and discussed by the BPCP committee was “Where do all the stolen TVs and laptops go?” It would appear that these are ‘quick sale’ items and are often taken to second hand dealers or pawn shops. Unfortunately people who sell these items do not have to prove that they own them. The majority of people do not know the serial number of their appliance, and even then you would have to be able to prove it was yours. We urge all our residents to keep the receipt when they purchase electrical/electronic items, and ensure there is a note of the serial number theron. A further word of advice, do not leave the empty appliance box out in the street for all to see what new equipment you have purchased.

Further success for Crystal Park SAPS News from Tryna Wolmarans, Communications Officer, Crystal Park Police Station, on recent successful arrests. ROBBERS ARRESTED!

On Thursday 24 November 2011 at 17h30, four black men entered a foreign business in Chief Luthuli. One of the suspects was armed with a fire arm. The suspects robbed the owner of cash, airtime and cigarettes, and fled the scene on foot. Fortunately two community members saw the commotion, and chased the suspects. The community members also called for police backup whilst following the suspects. One suspect managed to climb into a taxi, and one suspect was arrested. The other two ran away. The detectives of Crystal Park, (Capt Alie Van der Berg, W/O Riana Erasmus and CSt Hector Mbambo) arrived on the scene and did some follow up investigation. They traced the other two suspects to Daveyton, where they were arrested, and the fire arm used was also recovered with all of the robbed goods. The three suspects were detained and charged for business robbery, and the illegal possession of a fire arm. The suspects will appear in court on Monday 28 November 2011. The last suspect is known, and he will be arrested soon.

PERSON ARRESTED FOR THE POSSESSION OF DRUGS. Newbies as a group on the music scene are three gents forming the dance group Mi Casa-meaning – My House. The group is formed by Dj and Producer Dr Duda- who has been mastering dance tracks with the likes of Dj Fresh and compiling collaborations. The second member is the Vocalist – (João) J’Something, He studied music and started playing the guitar at the age of 11. Completing the group is trumpet extraordinaire Mo-T, He has musical bliss generating from Alexander Brass Band and Mango Groove. The three formed Mi Casa after they had performed an unrehearsed piece that pleased the crowd and as from there Soul Candy Music took them under the label, they started working on their debut self titled 14 track album. The album has scooped 3 Metro FM nominations this year. First single off the album ‘These Streets’- it is warm as it caters for everybody, Vocalist J’Something is singing the chorus in isiZulu and English. Second single currently getting high rotation on airwaves is called ‘Heavenly Sent’, with RnB lyrics mixed in dance and soul. The album is well put together, their creative skills complement each other and finishes off the album thoroughly. Other tracks to look forward to include "Across the room", ‘My oh My' and ‘all the glory". Mi Casa Music is a must get album this festive season. Catch them on twitter @micasamusic

DA CALLS ON METRO TO RESTORE N12 SQUATTERS’ DIGNITY

D

A Ward Councillor in Ward 24, Refiloe Nt’sekhe, has appealed to the Ekurhuleni Metro to restore the residents of the N12 informal settlement’s Constitutional Right to Dignity by ensuring that they are provided with adequate housing in a suitable area. Clr. Nt’sekhe’s comments follow residents of the Bapsfontein informal settlement being moved to the N12 informal settlement over the 2010 Christmas period due to fears of sinkholes forming as a result of large quantities of dolomite in the area. “While the DA acknowledges the very real dangers posed by potential sinkhole formation in Bapsfontein, the area where residents were moved to in Albert Luthuli Park is unsuitable as the land had been zoned for industrial development and not residential. At the time the DA advised that residents should have been relocated to Mayfield,” Clr. Nt’sekhe explained. She was speaking after the November 2011 monthly Ekurhuleni Metro Council meeting during which the Speaker of Council, Patricia Kumalo, refused to accept a Motion she (Clr. Nt’sekhe) attempted to table in this regard. The Speakers’ refusal was based on the grounds that the matter was sub-judice, as a case relating to the way in which residents of the former Bapsfontein informal settlement were removed from the area is currently serving in

CHAPLAIN

the Constitutional Court. Clr. Nt’sekhe, however, emphasised that her Motion related to the future treatment of resident, not the events of the past. “The Presidential Assent in the Constitution says: ”When President Nelson Mandela signed the 1996 constitution into Law at Sharpville on 10th December 1996, he brought to a close a long and bitter struggle to establish democracy in South Africa…….marking the determination of the country to turn its back on racism and the gross violation of human rights. Chapter 2, the Bill of Rights, further affirms the democratic values of human dignity,” she said. “In this case, the dignity of the residents of the N12 is not being protected. As a ward councillor, it is my responsibility to talk to my residents, to get to know them better and to understand their needs. In various conversations and meetings that I have had with the N12 residents, I have come to understand that not only is the land that they have been moved not correctly zoned, but their living conditions have deteriorated considerably.” “I ask again – is this not time that the Ekurhuleni Metro restore the dignity of the more than 3000 residents of Ekurhuleni now living under these unsuitable conditions?” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CALL CLR. REFILOE NT’SEKHE ON 071-365-6850.

Lopsided, but looking great! A little 8 year old boy called Gilbert had only been in scouts a short while. During one of the meetings he was handed a sheet of paper, a block of wood and four tyres and told to return home and “give it all to Dad”. That was not an easy task for Gilbert to do. Dad was not receptive to doing things with his son, but Gilbert tried. Dad read the paper and scoffed at the idea of making a pine wood derby car with his young eager son. The block of wood remained untouched as the weeks passed. Finally Mom stepped in to see if she could figure this all out. The project began. Having no carpentry skills, she decided that it would be best if she read the instructions and let Gilbert do the work, and he did. She read the measurements aloud, the rules of what they could do and what and they couldn’t do. Within days his block of wood was turning into a pinewood derby car - a little lopsided, but looking great (at least through the eyes of Mom). Gilbert had not seen any of the other kids’ cars and was feeling pretty proud of his “blue lightning”, the pride that comes with knowing you did something on your own. Then the big day arrived. With his blue pinewood derby in his hand, and pride in his heart, he headed to the big race. Once there his pride was turned to humility. Gilbert’s car was obviously the only car made entirely on his own. All the other cars were a father-son partnership, with cool paint jobs and sleek body styles made for speed. A few of the boys giggled as they looked at Gilbert’s lopsided, wobbly, unattractive vehicle. As the race began it was done in elimination fashion - you kept racing as long as you were the winner. One by one the cars raced down the finely sanded ramp. Finally it was between Gilbert and the sleekest, fastest looking car there. As the last race was about to begin, the wide-eyed, shy, 8 year old asked if they could stop the race for a minute, because he wanted to pray. The race was stopped. Gilbert hit his knees clutching his funny looking block of wood between his hands. With a wrinkled brow he set to converse with his heavenly father. He prayed in earnest for a very long minute and a half, then he stood, smile on his face, and announced “Okay. I am ready”. As the crowd cheered a boy named Tommy stood with his father as their car sped down the ramp. Gilbert stood with his heavenly father within his heart and watched his block of wood wobble down the ramp with surprisingly great speed and rushed over the finish line a fraction of a second before Tommy's car. Gilbert leaped into the air with a loud "thank you" as the crowd roared in approval. The scout master came up to Gilbert with microphone in hand and asked the obvious question, “So you prayed to win, huh Gilbert?”, to which the young boy answered, "Oh no, sir. That wouldn’t be fair to ask god to help you beat someone else. I just asked him to make it so I don’t cry when I lose" Children seem to have wisdom far beyond us. Gilbert didn’t ask God to win the race. He didn’t ask god to fix the outcome. He asked God to give him the strength in the outcome. When Gilbert first saw the other cars he didn’t cry to God “not fair, they had a father’s help”. No, he went to his Heavenly Father for strength. Perhaps we spend too much time asking God to rig the race, to make us number one, or too much time asking God to remove us from the struggle. Gilbert's simple prayer spoke volumes to those present that day. He never doubted that god would indeed answer his request. He didn’t pray to win, and thus hurt someone else. He prayed that God supply the grace to lose with dignity. Gilbert, by his stopping the race to speak to his Heavenly Father, also showed the crowd that he wasn’t there without a "Dad" but his Heavenly Father was most definitely there with him. Yes, Gilbert walked away that day as a winner with his Heavenly Father at his side.

World Aids Day

The theme for World AIDS Day 2011 (Thursday 1st December 2011) is 'Getting to Zero'. After 30 years of the global fight against HIV/AIDS, this year the global community has committed to focusing on achieving 3 targets: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths. The global HIV epidemic is extremely diverse, with both similarities and differences between regions, countries, provinces and communities. However, in order to meet the challenge of 'Getting to Zero' the global community must work together to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care. World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for all of us individuals, communities and political leaders - to take on the challenge of getting to zero. WHAT CAN I DO? Wear a red ribbon and raise awareness.

The red ribbon is an international symbol of AIDS awareness that is worn by people all year round and particularly around World AIDS Day to demonstrate care and concern about HIV and AIDS, and to remind others of the need for their support and commitment. The red ribbon started as a "grass roots" effort; as a result there is no one official AIDS ribbon manufacturer, and many people make their own. It's easily done - just use some ordinary red ribbon and a safety pin! If you want to take your awareness raising a step further then try finding a local event to take part in. Around the world there are hundreds of activities taking place to mark World AIDS Day, including candlelight vigils, art shows, marches and religious services.
