New high ranking “assistants” will get onto the gravy train in Lesedi as Executive Mayor of Lesedi, Clr. Lerato Maloka and Speaker, Clr. Simon Moremi, will now each appoint an assistant, equaling their own combined salaries of R2,4 mill per year. Lesedi denies the
allegation of equal salaries, but other information points to the contrary. It will be history in the making for Heidelberg. Never has it been necessary to appoint people of equal standing in such exclusive positions. Lesedi reacted that they are legally

Although details still have to be worked out, Rekord has it at good authority that more than one political party could rally their supporters to express the highest protest possible in a march where all citizens would act in unity. The intended united protest including citizens from all pre-dominant white and black areas, will be a first for Heidelberg where all citizens will be asked to unite their voices and deliver a strong message to municipalities and government alike. Tension between the Ratanda Community Forum (RCF) and Lesedi Local Municipality started in September when some 700 followers marched to the Lesedi Local Municipality with a petition in which they sought an explanation for the high electricity costs and why they could not buy their power directly from Eskom. The Mayor, Lerato Maloka, was given a week to come up with answers. Nothing resulted and on 22 November four mem-
bers of the RCF were arrested for public violence after a public meeting. James Buthelezi (Chair Person) and his committee including Kenny Tsotetse, Moholdi Motai and Blessing Motsepe had to stay in jail overnight and were released without seeing a magistrate or paying bail. Their arrests followed incidents on 21 November when frustrated members took to the streets and, inter alia, caused damage to the properties of Councillor Joyce Mokoena and speaker Simon Moremi. The police arrived in time as they were closing in on the mayor’s house. At a meeting with the police on the same day, the police representative promised to organise a meeting for the committee with the Mayor. However, when they arrived at the police station, they were arrested. The intended united protest could inevitably lead to unrest among all parties in Lesedi as there are those in favour of the protest while others oppose it. Any possible shifts will become clear in the New Year.

In a devotion that I did for our Executive board I shared a true story that demonstrates open and free As we draw closer to Christmas we are made “giving” very well. A Chaplain came to visit a aware of the awesome, fantastic, sacrificial soldier who had saved the life of a person and loving gift that God gave us – His Son but in doing so he had lost his arm. You saved a life and often struggle to give, yet God gave so freely. lost your arm - that was big”. The man looked at the Chaplain and after a while said “No sir, I saved a life and gave my arm”. As I think about this story I wonder how much we are willing to give to those in need? Now I am not only talking of the poor in money but also those who are poor in emotion, poor in spirit and those in need of love. I believe that we often opt out for giving money (I am not saying that we do not have to give – and God calls us to give a tenth to our stronghold – see Matthew 23:23) and tend to ignore the fact that we are also called to give of our time, seeking the lost and sharing the Gospel story with them. We read in James 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(NIV) Now being someone that believes in the truth of the Bible I challenge us all to carry out this calling this Christmas. Maybe we can reduce the cost of the presents we are going to buy and use the saving to bless someone who is not as privileged as we are. Together with that I challenge us all to get involved in giving some time to bless those who are struggling – whether the struggle be financial (we can buy some groceries – not necessary to give money out), or emotional or spiritual. If your church is not reaching out to the marginalized then encourage them to do so (maybe you can start/run the ministry) or alternatively find a church that is involved and join them for the Christmas outreach. At the end of the day my challenge is to bless - and through the blessing be blessed yourself. From Heidelberg Methodist Church I wish you all a blessed and Christ filled Christmas season.

Robbers caught after cash theft Five men were apprehended after pulling off a robbery to the value of R81 000 at a club for women. The five suspects all in their thirties, targeted women in Duduza who had been saving their money for the festive season.
They made off with R81 000 in cash, which was to be divided among the patrons of the club. Shortly after the incident, members of the Duduza SAPS spotted the getaway vehicle and gave chase and the suspects then crashed the vehicle, when they attempted to
enter the Vlakfontein cemetery on Tonk Meter Road. Speed and precise action led to the arrest and detention of the five men. Part of the cash stolen from the victim was recovered and two hand guns were seized. Investigations are ongoing and no further
information will be given at this stage as it may affect further investigations. Station Commander of Duduza SAPS, Lt Col Egendren Moodley praised the members for their dedication and perseverance in achieving these successes.

Reddingsbeamptes het haar te hulp gesnel en haar totdat ‘n ambulans later opgedaag het. Die Metro Polisie, Heidelberg Polisie en Nigel Polisie kon die volgende dag geen enige verdere inligting oor die ongeluk verskaf nie.

Arguments in favour of drinking & driving by JP Okes The purpose of the heading was to attract your interest long enough to actually read this article. Although there are a number of arguments defending drinking and driving, none of them are of any assistance when you have been caught driving under the influence. One of the more entertaining arguments is based on percentages. If 20% of accidents are caused by persons driving under the influence of alcohol, then it follows that 80% of
accidents are caused by sober people. Perhaps then sober people should stay off the roads so that drunk people can get home safely. If this argument does not make any sense to you, then clearly you have not had enough to drink. I am personally an outspoken critic of the laws dealing with this particular offence. In laymans terms, the law does not prohibit drinking and driving, the law prohibits drinking too much and then driving. Now con-

sider the following: When you are stone cold sober, drinking and driving seems like a serious offence and one you would never commit. This knowledge does not prevent you from having a “cold one”, and surely one beer should not push you over the limit? Now you have had one drink. The next drink now appears even more attractive. In fact your ability to distinguish between right and wrong, has been ever so slightly diminished by your first drink. So you have the second drink, because surely two drinks would not push you over the limit? The third drink now looks down right beerutiful! Can you see where this is going? The legislator is actually partially to blame for any problem that might exist in respect of drinking and driving. It can take the state a year or longer to analyse your blood sample and to determine whether or not you were over the limit when you were driving. You are expected however to make that judgment, after having two or three drinks, within a matter of minutes, and without having access to the multimillion rand machinery that the state uses to determine the concentration of alcohol in your blood. In my book this seems a little unfair. The only way to rectify the matter, is to pass legislation making it clear that you are not allowed to drive with any alcohol in your bloodstream. If this were the case, then you would not even consider having one beer before you drive a motor vehicle. As it is highly unlikely that the legislator will ever pass the suggested legislation, drivers will for some time to come be expected to determine themselves whether they are over the limit or not, before driving. In terms of Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act you may not drive a motor vehicle where the concentration of alcohol in your bloodstream is 0,05 grams per 100 ml, or more. For normal South Africans (if there is such a thing at this time of year), this equates to roughly two beers. Actually slightly less than two beers, but who is counting?
Here is a sobering thought: If you are convicted of driving under the influence where a person is seriously injured or killed as a result of your conduct, you may be sentenced to 9 years imprisonment. Not so funny when somebody dies, is it? For less serious drinking and driving offences, the Courts may impose very harsh fines and / or direct imprisonment. Courts now have very little sympathy with offenders. For years now would be offenders have been warned of the possible consequences of committing this offence, yet there appears to be no decline in the commission of the offence. It is common knowledge that this offence is in fact committed much more during the “silly” season. I deal with many drinking and driving offences throughout the year and, in the majority of cases, there is no excuse for the conduct of my clients. It is always sad when a person with a lot of potential suddenly finds himself handicapped by a previous conviction. Remember, only CRIMINALS have previous convictions. To properly challenge a drinking and driving charge can be very expensive, and there are no guarantees that you will be acquitted. It seems to me therefore that you should seriously consider not drinking any alcohol if you know that you will be driving shortly thereafter. If you have consumed alcohol, then it would be wise to drink only water for a couple of hours before you actually drive your vehicle. This recommendation is not guaranteed to prevent you from driving under the influence, but will enable you to better make a decision as to whether you should be driving at all. If you do get caught, then you should give your full co-operation to the relevant officials, and see an attorney of your choosing as soon as you have been released. Closure of municipal offices Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality would like to inform its customers that the municipality will be closed from December 26 to December 30. All administrative offices, libraries, selected rates halls and paypoints will also be closed. Essential services such as refuse collection and water services will, however, be in operation, explains municipal spokesperson, Justice Mohale, adding that emergency services and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police are also classified as essential services. The Metro’s offices will also be closing on Friday, December 23.
Residents of Struisbult, which borders Marievale, are again without telephones. After five months of having no phones, due to cable theft, the repairs were done and there was a phone service which only lasted a few days. The cables had again been stolen. Now the residents are again without a landline service and have to rely on cell phones. This is particularly hard on the senior citizens in the area who say they simply can’t afford cell phone calls only in emergencies. There has been no information as to when the service will be restored. At the time of going to press the landline service had been restored in Struisbult but residents are hoping this will be permanent.

This time of the year is significant for Christians in that it is the time to celebrate the gift of life, says the Executive Mayor of Lesedi Local Municipality, Councillor Lerato Maloka in her Christmas message. She says it is now that time of the year when we sit back and reflect on what has happened during the year so as to improve and do better in 2012. 2011 marked the year of Local Government Elections wherein the community of Lesedi, together with other communities nationally, exercised their Democratic Right which is entrenched in the Constitution of South Africa, being the right to vote. They voted for hope and the betterment of their lives. Lesedi Local Municipality has maintained its unwavering drive towards accelerating Service Delivery. There were other global
issues which impacted directly on us as a municipality, which are amongst others, the petrol and electricity hikes, global warming and other international developments taking place in the world. “This is the time for giving, sharing, loving and being with our loved ones. As we do that, we must please remember, the poor and the needy that we need to help as a community. Let us also remember the challenge facing matriculants who wish to further their studies but do not have funds that is not theirs alone. Then the party got going with clowns entertaining the children, presents being dished out and the youngsters digging into cold drinks, sweets, ice cream and chips. “We would like to thank the people and sponsors for making a difference in the life’s of the less fortunate children,” Scott said.

Patrollers keeping crime down The Dunnottar Patrol Unit, under the auspices of the Community Policing Forum, was found last year by Joost Zeelie. The response for this voluntary but valuable contribution to keeping Dunnottar safe was great. Today there are 35 men and women who patrol Dunnottar on a two-hour shift basis every day and night. Should the patrollers see anything suspicious, they immediately report it to the control room, manned by Retha Newman who then contacts the police. The response is always immediate and Retha says that without the full support of the Dunnottar SAPS, the patrol unit could not have been so successful in decreasing crime. “They are wonderful,” she says. “They respond quickly and a special thanks must go to Insp Tommy Tomlinson and Insp Pieter Droskie”. Recently a patroller spotted two men stealing a cell phone from children, one of whom tried to catch the thieves and ran across the
veld to try and catch them. This was dangerous but the child was stopped by police. The cell phone was not recovered and no arrests made, But when several CPF patrol cars turned up and then the police, the thieves would have certainly got a warning, as have many other criminals. The patrollers assist the police and are doing a great job in keeping the crime rate down in Dunnottar, as all the patrol cars are clearly marked with the CPF logo. Patrollers do not approach suspicious people or circumstances but just contact the control room. All the patrollers have their radios on all the time, even when not driving, so that contact can be kept. The 35 men and women are to be praised for their dedication over the last 12 months. Met die nuwe jaar in sig, het die twee vrouespanne van Heidelberg Rolbalklub op 3 Desember albei teen Benoni Rolbalklub in Heidelberg in ‘n ligawedstryd gewen. Nelie du Plessis van Heidelberg, naaste aan die kamera plat op die grond, is besig om die afstand van die balle te meet terwyl ander spelers toekyk.
Nigel Rugby Nigel Rugby hou op 23 Januarie 2012 ‘n onthaal vir al sy borge by die John Vorster Stadion. Jimmy Meadon, woordvoerder van die klub, sê hy nooi alle voornemende borge om hom te bel by 082-7840519. Die oefening vir 2012 begin op 10 Januarie. Voornemende spelers kan hom gerus skakel.
PAGE 15 Cambridge Football Club of Nigel is a soccer club which was established in 1930 whereby it consisted out of a senior team only in the early years. The under 14 team participated in the Eastern Local Football Association for the first time this year after ending second in the Boksburg and Central Football Association League last year . The team came up against strong opposition like Scaw F.C, Benoni Northerns F.C, Elsburg F.C but ended in a good position by being the runners-up in second place. The coach Mr. D.Metsana and manager Mr. R. Hansen was very impressed with the boys who gave 100% despite having injury problems. The senior team however was crowned Boksburg and Central Football Association League Champions on 3 December 2011. The head coach Mr.D. Metsana and captain Mr. Jabu Motha worked very hard with the team in training along with the commitment of the players, but that hard work paid off. The team jumped to the first position by beating Spades F.C, Burnbridge F.C and Porto F.C who lead the pack all season long but it was the team from Nigel who represented the town by winning the League Trophy with three points clear. As one of the three Nigel teams who have participated in the Boksburg and Central Football Association League, Cambridge F.C over came all odds despite having financial problems for transport, Referee fees etc. The Club will have an Award Evening on the 15th December 2011 at the Alra Park Community Hall.
