Dr. Pieter Slabbert, ‘n Neurosjirurg het in die operasie, bekend as diep brein stimulasie, ‘n breinstimulator met twee elektrodes in ‘n gedeelte van die brein ingeplant om die toestand, spasmodiese torticollos, op te klaar. Slabbert twee maande gelede ontmoet – nadat ‘n ander groep dokters nie die probleem kon opspoor nie. “Dit het gevoel of my hele liggaam in konkreet gegiet was en ek wou liewer doodgaan. Ek sal nog voortgaande behandeling moet ontvang want die spasmas was so kwaai dat dit twee kussinkies tussen my nekwerwels uitgedruk het. Ek is egter nou 100% gesond en is baie dankbaar oor so ‘n bekwame spesialis wat op my pad gekom het en almal wat vir my gebid het. Ek gee alle eer aan ons hemelse Vader,” sê Johan.

many Christians have a deep desire to learn more about the basics but are afraid to ask as they are scared that they may become embarrassed. Many people who are not Christians and would like to know more about Christianity have a dilemma, not knowing where to go to get this information. Well I believe that the answer to both of the above is in the ALPHA course. And the bonus is that those who are strong and mature Christians will also find the ALPHA course meaningful because there are also deep seated Christians “gems” of knowledge and information found in the course material. Further to this the ALPHA course also moves along a journey ending in a deep understanding of what Christianity is. So what is ALPHA? The ALPHA course is held once a week, in our case on a Sunday Evening at 17h30, for 10 weeks and ends in a getaway camp which is held in close proximity to Heidelberg. Each session starts with a light snack provided by the members of the Heidelberg Methodist Church. This is a time of fun, laughter and enjoyment, catching up on the latest news and happenings in the participants’ lives. The evening then moves on to a time of watching a video. The presenter of the video is Nicky Gumble and questions like “Is there a God”, why am I here on earth, where did I come from and where am I going” are tackled and answered in a very clear and articular manner. After watching the video the group breaks up into smaller discussion groups and spends time discussing the material of the video (with the help of a course manual). The evening ends between 19h30 and 20h00. The ALPHA course is for ALL people from ALL backgrounds, denominations and viewpoints. The ideal is to get your entire cell group to come along and enjoy the course together. The organizers will keep you in your cell group so that it becomes more meaningful and helpful to you as a group. People from other denominations DO NOT have to par-

Waterborne sanitation is now being delivered to informal settlements by the Ekurhuleni Metro and this is good news for the residents in the areas affected – including Nigel. State of the art dignified sanitation will replace the existing systems, marking the end of concerns raised about chemical toilets. Ekurhuleni Mayor, Clr Mondi Gungubele announced recently that the council has adopted a very aggressive informal settlement plan that
goes beyond just recognising the status for informal settlement residents as beneficiaries for housing but recognise their right to receive basic services. Chemical toilets will be replaced with lockable containers with flushing toilets and wash basins. There will be lights in the toilets and all fittings will be plastic to avoid vandalism. The new facilities are due to be erected during the current financial year.

What started off as an employee driven initiative, Burnstone Mine Project Warmth has turned into a successful company drive of collecting and donating blankets annually to the local communities of Balfour, in Dipaleseng Municipality, Mpumalanga. The blanket drive started in 2009 and has successfully continued this year. There were excellent participation from employees at Burnstone and Head Office with a contribution of R16 500,00. Grinaker donated R15, 000.00 towards the project. The Subaru Owners club donated 74 blankets and the Rotary Club 100 blankets while employees donated a further R5 700,00 from proceeds gathered at a golf day that was held. A further twenty blankets from employees were also received. Burnstone mine has a keen interest in the needs and welfare of the communities they operate in. The women and children in their host communities are mostly under-privileged, so in turn each year, Burnstone tries to
bring a little bit of warmth to the people. They also get a chance to experience the joy of a new blanket with help of the Burnstone employees and their business partners. When asked to comment on his involvement in the drive, Vusi Magadana, CSR Manager of Burnstone said, “The past three years has been a great success. I believe this year’s drive has been more successful. Right from the start we included all our stakeholders and drove a tight campaign to reach our goals”. A total of 800 blankets were purchased. The official handover took place on 5 June at Grootvlei paypoint where over 200 blankets were handed out, then in Greylingstad where over 300 blankets were handed out and on 7 June the entourage went to Vaal area where over 200 blankets were presented to the elderly and people living with disabilities. The remaining blankets will be handed over to the children led homes, and Burnstone’s immediate farm community.
Mayoress gives gifts to tornado victims Ekurhuleni Mayoress, Queendy Gungubele, and the Thebe Foundation recently brought smiles and tears of love to the young and old, when she donated food parcels and blankets to the poorest of the poor among victims of the tornado which hit Masechaba in Duduza seven months ago. People in the Duduza Church hall burst into song as the Mayoress and Thebe’s Mokgethi Tshabalala handed over the goods to the beneficiaries, who were accompanied by family and friends. Sixteen pensioners received blankets, while 10 needy children were presented with R1 500 food vouchers each, bicycles and study desks. The elderly are the most vulnerable during the winter season, hence the decision to donate the blankets.

New food labeling regulations will soon keep consumers more informed about what they consume. South Africa recently passed new food labeling regulations which would make consumers more informed about their food choices such as soya, dairy, nuts, eggs and shellfish. However, allergies might be lurking in products under familiar names. Mariska Fouche, Public Affairs Manager for Parma Dynamics one of South Africa’s leading providers of energy medication, welcomed the move but warned consumers to be on the lookout for hidden allergens that might not be as obvious. “The new labeling regulations will certainly allow consumers to identify any common allergens if they know what to look for”, said Fouche. She said consumers should read the entire label and if they were not sure of every ingredient that went into a cooked item they should not eat it. For processed foods, check the label for a warning that the food was made in a factory where your allergens may have been used on the same manufacturing lines. The food industry often uses alternative names for common allergens which the average consumer might not be aware of, says Fouche. She said many processed foods contained additives such as preservatives, colourants, sweeteners and anti-oxidants, flavourants, emulsifiers and anti-oxidants. All consumers should use the new food labels for potential allergens.
Young people of Ratanda attended a progressive and violence free march against the plague of youth unemployment which was organised by the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) on Friday 22 June 2012. ANCYL also used the occasion to raise its voice against the blunt inconsideration of people residing in Heidelberg/Ratanda by companies and institutions in terms of employment practices and the lack of sustainable youth development initiatives by companies and institutions. The marchers stopped at different private and public institutions to demonstrate their dismay with unemployment. Correctional Services, BAT, Gauteng Department of Public Works, Spoornet, Heidelberg Hospital, Heidelberg Home Affairs, Heidelberg SAPS, and Lesedi Local Municipality were visited.

Over 400 at public meeting Important issues such as cash power service boxes, electricity, new water meters, housing, the status of indigents, the new clinic and the swimming pool were discussed at the recent public meeting held by Wally Labuschagne, DA councilor for Ward 88. There was a good turnout, with more than 400 people attending the meeting held in the Mackenzieville Community Hall. Also discussed was the importance of the ward committee. He explained the purpose of a ward committee and stressed the importance of the committee and community cooperating with each other, in order to have a good working relationship with the committee, community, the ward councilor and the municipality. “A ward committee serves as the eyes and ears of the community,” said Labuschagne. He will present this to the Speaker of the Council, Patricia Kumalo in the July council meeting. A tense moment came at the end of the meeting when Labuschagne was asked how the Democratic Alliance could claim to represent the people of ward 88, when the Party has opposed the budget. “I was disappointed with this question, asked by an ANC ‘plant’,”said the councilor. He said the DA had opposed the budget for several reasons, but tabled an alternative budget in the format of a 12-point plan. This plan aims to save ratepayers in the Metro from wasteful expenditure. The meeting was undoubtedly a success and residents of the areas involved showed interest and support, while also learning more about the importance of ward committees.”

The Nigel SPCA is finding it hard to survive and donations are at an all-time low. At present there is an urgent need for donations of dog food. Stocks are low and individual donations will be welcome. But there is a real need for businesses or organizations wo donate dog food on a regular basis. This will solve the present problem. Kalender wink vir skoolkunstenaars Kunstenaars op skool kan nou hul liefde en deernis vir arm, kwesbare ou en jong mense en hulle strewe na erbarming en mededeelsaamheid, in skilderwerke vaslê vir ‘n kompetisie van die voedingsorganisasie Meals on Wheels Community Services. Van die gelukkige wenners se werke sal verewig word in ‘n 2013 kalender wat deur die organisasie saamgestel sal word. Hennie Botha, streeksverteenwoordiger van Meals on Wheels in Heidelberg sê die doel met die kompetisie is om ontluikende kunstenaars te identifiseer en hulle aan te moedig. Die werke van tot twaalf skoolkunstenaars sal in die 2013 kalender verskyn. Die tema vir die kompetisie is “Dade van Welwillendheid.” Benewens die groot lokaas om hul werke gepubliseer te kry, sal daar ook ander pryse wees. Dis nog te vroeg om meer hieroor te sê, maar geskenkbewyse van winkels sal waarskynlik deel hiervan vorm. Inskrywingsvorms is reeds by skole binne Heidelberg en Nigel uitgedeel. Kunstenaars van buite Heidelberg en Nigel is ook welkom om deel te neem. “Ek wil daarop wys dat die kunstenaars dringend moet reageer. Die sluitingsdatum vir die inskrywings is reeds op 31 Julie en die beoordeling is op 23 Augustus.” Die kunswerke moet in landskap op A3 formaat op sterk wit papier, bord of doek met ‘n houtraam gedoen word. Inskrywingsgeld beloop slegs R10. Daar is afsonderlike afdelings vir kinders tussen die ouderdomme 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 en 14-18. Die media wat gebruik mag word sluit vetkryt, kleur of waterkleur potlode, gedraaide vetkryt, olie of sagte pastel, waterkleur, akriliese verf, olieverf, en gemengde media in. Geen skrapboeke en geen samestellings (collages) sal aanvaar word nie.

Masincedane blom al mooier Met ‘n volgepakte onthaalsaal van digby die 400 mense in die Sentrum vir Bejaardes in Heidelberg op 16 Junie om na die sangeres Riana Nel te luister en by ‘n feesmaal aan te sit, het die personeel en bestuur van Masincedane weereens getoon met watter durf en toewyding hulle die belange van die lede van die Masincedane Klub dien. In die ses jaar wat die klub bestaan, het dit elke jaar net sterker en sterker geword. Christine Kruger, die bestuurder van Masincedane, het etlike jare gelede die visie gekry om ‘n klub vir fisies en psigies gestremde persone in Heidelberg te begin. Sedert die klein boompie sewe jaar terug geplant is, het dit al stewig ontwikkel. Verbeeldingryke projekte om die lot van die klublede onder die aandag van die publiek te bring en ‘n jaarlikse groot optrede deur ‘n kunstenaar om die fondse te styf, het momentum verleen aan ‘n unieke en sterk organisasie in Heidelberg. Die opkoms na die vertoning van Riana Nel het nie alleen die harte van die bestuur laat swel nie, maar was terselfdertyd ‘n groot pluimpie vir die borge en inwoners van Heidelberg wat die belange van die klublede hoog ag. Die vroue van Nigel Hervormde Kerk se Sustersvereniging het hul beste talente ingespan om die saal in ‘n fees van blomme en kleur te omskep. Daarby het Didi de Kok en haar personeel van die Sentrum hulle self oortref met ‘n ete wat met die bestes vergelyk kan word. Die aand het begin toe klublede ‘n paar liedjies
gesing het. Veral die “Onse Vader” het trane in die oë van mense gebring. Carla Grobler en Taswill Louw het individuele nommers gelewer en hul talente het die gaste in vervoering gehad. Riana Nel en haar twee orkeslede het christelike en ander liedere in Afrikaans en Engels gesing terwyl Riana tussendeur ‘n getuienis gelewer het. ‘n Pragtige kombers wat met handgeverfde lappies oorgetrek is, is vir R4 000 opgeveil. Riette Höll, skakelbeampte, sê die belangstelling van die gemeenskap beteken baie vir die bestuur en inwoners van Masincedane. “Dit is regtig genade dat ons datums, optredes en kunstenaars altyd mooi inmekaar pas. Ons kan nou vir die volgende paar maande weer projekte bedryf om die belange van sentrum en sy inwoners te bevorder. Klublede betaal R300 per maand vir vyf dae van sorg en opleiding. In die dag ontvang hulle ook versnaperinge, bedryf kunsaktiwiteite en gaan van tyd tot tyd op uitstappies.” Masincedane doen ‘n beroep op nywerhede en besighede wat ligte werkies soos verpakking het en om bv briewe te vou en koeverte toe te plak, om met hulle in aanraking te kom sodat die klublede ook kan voel dat hulle iets verdien. Who do we believe? Come and look at Dunnottar Library, they use our money to do the paving. Now the grass and weeds have overtaken the entire area. I have contacted the Roads Department for months to solve a problem on the back road of Dunnottar, running parallel to Howeson Road. Last night I saw that they have dumped three loads of sand, which will prevent cars, taxis and 4 x 4’s making Dunning Road a main thoroughfare. When are we, the taxpayers going to stand up for ourselves? Come on Dunnottar and Nigel residents, let’s make a stand and start naming and shaming our councilors through your newspaper. Members of the Nigel Stamp Club were recently treated to an interesting and informative talk by well-known stamp collector Steve Catlin, who is also a dealer in most philatelic material. But this was a talk with a difference, with Steve diverting from stamps for a while to introduce some fascinating history dating back to the Angle-Boer War with a unique illustration. The main exhibit consisted of one frame (16 page) collection of philatelic material related to the history of the railways in South Africa from 1859 to 1910. The purpose of this exhibit was to give an outline of the establishment of the railway system in South Africa and to show various forms of philatelic material that was utilised in the postal system by the introduction of rail transport. On display were railways parcel stamps, postcards issued by the Rail Companies, postal stationery utilized by the various Rail Companies as well as permits issued by the Imperial Military Railways during the Anglo-Boer War. Much interest was shown in the birthday card that Steve displayed. This was sent during the Anglo-Boer War to the “Rest Camp” in Pretoria. With the opening of the Irene Camp, many families were gradually transferred out of the Pretoria rest camp to this new location. The card shown is a birthday wish from FP du Toit to AM du Toit at the Pretoria rest camp. The Anglo-Boer War Museum confirmed that Antonie Michael du Toit was captured and was prisoner (No:1845) in the camp at the early age of 16 and that he was later transferred to a camp in Ceylon. Steve’s stamp stories captivated the stamp club members. The illustrated birthday card sent by a prisoner in the Anglo-Boer War.

Nigel Rotary Anns opened their hearts for the needy on 15 June when they donated some 85 food parcels and 75 blankets to needy families who have learners in two Nigel primary schools, Laerskool Hannes Visagie and Laerskool Tini Vorster. Led by Georgina Scott, President of Nigel Rotary Anns and Ina Carniel, the organization presented their love presents to the

Engineering and Business Study students were very proud to receive acknowledgement for their successful completion of their studies at the annual Sedibeng College graduation ceremony held at the Vereeniging Civic Centre. Students with their partners, friends and parents celebrated their success. Students at the college have the opportunity to study in different vocational fields of study such as Office Administration, Financial Accounting, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The skills gap and the high unemployment rate in our country make Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges the obvious choice for those students who want to enter the world of work. The college is well equipped with a simulation office, computers and workshops to ensure students do not only get theoretical training but also practical training. Mr Naledi Motaung explained students could apply for bursaries from Department Higher Education. Travel and accommodation allowances are also available to students subject to terms and conditions. The college is a public institution of the Department of Higher Education and open to all communities. Therefore all persons (post school) in Heidelberg need to know there is opportunities to study towards a career. Our country is in need of dedicated, enthusiastic persons who will make full use of opportunities offered and become the leaders of tomorrow. Staff members from Sedibeng College, Heidelberg Campus is passionate about placing students with commerce and industry for practical exposure. Nigel rugby Nuwe seisoen vir duiweboere neem plek tussen bestes in Nigel se rugbyspanne is besig om eer en trots aan die dorp te bring. In wedstryde die afgelope maand het hulle getoon dat hulle ‘n gedugte krag in plattelandse rugby is wat sy plek tussen die bestes kan inneem. Op 15 Junie het die Eerste Rugbyspan met sterk en verbeeldingryke rugby Elsburg ‘n rugbyles geleer toe hulle ses drieë, teen die een van Elsburg aangeteken het in ‘n botsing op Vrydag 15 Junie op die John Vorster Stadion in Nigel. Die Eerste Span se drieë is gedruk deur George Fritz (1), Willem Labuschagné (1), Strachen Nortje (1), Paul Janse van Vuuren (2) en Francois Jacobs (1). Reon Bezuidenhout het met twee doelskoppe en Willem Labuschagne met een geslaag. Onder die voorspelers het Paul Janse van Vuuren en Karel Vermeulen uitgeblink met spel uit die boonste rakke. Die O/21 van Nigel het Elsburg se masjien heeltemal uit rat geruk en hulle ‘n deftige loesing van 52 – 3 toegedien. Ook Nigel se tweede span het onder hul teenstanders gemaai en met 22 – 0 as oorwinnaars van die veld gestap. Op 9 Junie het die spanne hul afrigters en bestuur se borste van die trots laat swel ná ‘n uitstekende naweek teen Edenvale. Onder die individuele spelers het Reon Bezuidenhout van die 0 21-span ‘n pragvertoning gelewer deur nie minder as vier keer agter die doellyn te gaan kuier. Die Eerste span het met 48 -17 geseëvier en drieë¸ is gedruk deur George Fritz (2), Mo Lottering, Reon Bezuidenhout, Nico Botha, Willem Labushagne, Rinus Moulder en Marinus Smit. Willem Labushagne en Innes Potgieter het elk met twee doelskoppe geslaag. Uitstekende spel is deur Dandre Grobler, Rinus Moulder en Karel Vermeulen gelewer. Nigel se Tweede span het met 14 -7 gewen. R. Rossouw het ‘n blink vertoning gelewer. Die onder 21- span het met 43 -10 gewen . Drieë is gedruk deur Reon Bezuidenhout (4), Quinten Nortje en Willie Celliers. Die res van die punte het gekom van die skopvoet van Willie Celliers. Op 2 Junie het die spanne teen Kempton Park Wolwe getoon dat daar bestendige en sterk groei in die opbou van die spanne is. Nigel se Eerste Rugbyspan het die Kemptonpark Wolwe met 34-19 geklop. Die drieë het gekom van heelagter George Fritz (2), Reon Bezuidenhout (1) en Ruan Jordaan (1). Innes Potgieter het die res van die punte met die voet aangeteken. George was ook die speler van die wedstryd. Die derdes het met 10 -7 in ‘n taai stryd gewen. ‘n Lang strafskop van Xavier van Rensburg het die wedstryd in Nigel se guns laat swaai. Die tweedes het met 25-18 verloor. In die wedstryd tussen die 0/21 spanne wat as die wedstryd van die jaar beskou is, het Nigel net-net met 13-17 verloor.

In die eerste wedren op 2 Junie van Ventersburg af, het Willem Matthee en Ferdie Pienaar van OERF Heidelberg Posduifklub hul teenstanders wind in die oë gevlieg. Ferdie het die eerste plek vir jong duiwe ingeneem en Willem het die eerste plek in die ope afdeling behaal. Altesame tien duiweboere het 200 duiwe in die ope afdeling en 187 in die afdeling vir jong resiesduiwe ingeskryf. Die wedvlug het oor 211 km vir jong duiwe en 212 km vir duiwe in die ope afdeling gestrek. ‘n Ligte suidweste wind het gewaai. Die uitslae vir jong duiwe was soos volg met die ope-afdeling in hakies: Danie Botes, 18,19 (9,18), Andre Botha 4, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 23 (24,29,30), Babore Lofts 6, 8, 12 (33), Klingbiel Y en M 9 (14,36), David en Derrick 6,7 (31), Klingbiel M en Y 35 (27), Willem Matthee 2, 24, 27, 28, 29. (1, 11, 20, 28), Alroy Paulse 22, (3, 21, 22, 23), Ferdie Pienaar 1, 3, 10, 14, 20, 25, 26, 30 (6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 25), Henk Pienaar 11, (5, 10, 15, 16, 17, 19, 24).
