Is Nigel a “truck town”? Snow surprise!
The number of large trucks coming through Nigel seems to be on the increase. Several accidents have already occurred involving trucks. North Road seems to be the worst situation, when numbers of huge trucks often speed up to get through the robots to get on to the Heidelberg Road. Many of them overtake other vehicles, heading for the Dunnottar Road, then turn in front of them. No consideration is shown at robots by many
of the truck drivers who have no time to stop when the lights are turning against them. This leaves traffic waiting to turn at the intersection by the hotel, little choice but to carry on waiting until there are no trucks in sight. Now large trucks, many carrying a huge load of cars, is a normal site in suburban roads, such as Kingsway. They are often so long that traffic is held up while they try to maneuver turning from Van Riebeeck road into Kingsway. But the North Road route

seems to be the one which is causing motorists distress and concern. Obviously the fact that the trucks come mostly from Nigel’s industrial area is a fact. Yet in other towns this situation has been averted by ensuring that no heavy vehicles go through the centre of the town. While this may not always be possible in the case of Nigel, the fact that these huge vehicles seem to have right of way and do not seem to have any thought for ordinary vehicles, warrants an investigation. There are possibly several other routes which
could be taken to get to the Heidelberg Road. Travelling up North Road towards the Heidelberg/Dunnottar Roads intersection has become a nightmare for many motorists, who find themselves overtaken by trucks, which then revert to the other lane. In other areas of the CBD large trucks pose a threat not only to motorists but to pedestrians. Motorists are fed up and says that Nigel is now known as a “truck town”, where these vehicles seem to be “kings of the road”, with no-one to control the situation – until a tragedy occurs.

Appeal to reduce electricity Customers of the Ekurhuleni Metro are being called upon to use electricity wisely and help alleviate the load on the network in view of the cold weather. Extreme cold weather sees large spikes in the use of electricity and creates supply challenges for distributors, when networks are overloaded for short periods of time. Overloading causes the electricity grid to trip out, leaving people with no electricity at the worst times. In the light of a cold front that has gripped the country and temperatures which dropped below freezing and snowfalls around Ekurhuleni, the electricity network has come under extreme pressure as communities try to
keep themselves warm. Municipal spokesperson, Sam Modiba says “We appeal to all our customers to use electricity wisely by doing a number of practical things, such as reducing the number of electrical appliances that are on at a given time. “Where a heater is being used, doors and windows should be closed to retain the heat. “Switch off the geyser and take a bath.” These are just a few of the ways to save electricity. Modiba says the municipality urges residents to be cautious when dealing with heat sources as most fires are caused by negligence and lack of understanding towards heat sources. The message is loud and clear save electricity and avoid being without it!

Nigel will be one of the East Rand SPCA’s to participate in the annual “Animal Run” by bikers on September 2, by having a stall at the event and being able to share profits made with the other SPCA’s. The event will start at the Germiston Hyperama and finish at the Carnival Baseball Club, where all the fun will be. The objectives are to create an opportunity for the motorcycle community to demonstrate their support of the SPCA’s on the East Rand and generate funds and resources to place the organization in a stronger position to fight cruelty to animals. MOW art competition gets cultural form Meals on Wheels (MOW) strives to support the needy for many of years. They are now organizing a “fundraising art competition”, trying to find young art talent in the attempt to compile a 2013 calendar. All schools within Heidelberg, Nigel and other surrounding towns had time till 31 July to hand in their art works dealing with Deeds of Kindness. The winners will be announced on 23 August at Sedaven. While planning the programme we discovered “CJ Cielie Drama Studio” who will feed the soul with acts of comedy and drama of young upcoming artists. “Talent Development Agency” will also take part in ballet, Spanish dance and other creative dancing from the age of 2 years and older,” says Zerua Wessels of MOW. Prominent artists donated paintings and others donated a traditional fruit cake, porcelain dolls dressed in traditional outfits, a self made smok dress, freshly baked Hertzog cookies and more. Thirty minutes are allocated to an auction of these articles. A light supper will be available at a small cost while the children enjoy a jumping castle. Then the “highlight” of the evening will be the announcement of the winners by the judges for the 2013 calendar. A promising evening will be on the 23 August 2012 at 18h00 at Sedaven Youth Centre. End off Ratanda crisis
The re-connection of pre-paid power supply to certain households in Ratanda, is the only hurdle that has to be overcome before Lesedi Local Municipality and Ratanda Community Forum reaches a final solution to the problems that left Ratanda in chaos during March this year. In what seemed to be a full out drive to lift the mayor from her seat, an orgy of destruction, riots, raging tempers and a flaming hell, almost destroyed the whole infrastructure of about R60 mill, including social services. In a frank and open discussion about the whole matter, Mr. T. S. Moremi, Speaker of Lesedi Local Council, said the matter of re-connecting power to debt burden households, leaves the Council in a very precarious position. Electricity had risen abnormally high at the beginning of the year and political opponents of the Mayor, Cll. Lerato Malaka chose to use this issue to get rid of her. The opponents mainly consist of disgruntled members of the ANC. One has already been expelled by the ANC Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee PEC from the ANC, another Councillor’s disciplinary hearing is pending and 18 others are also due for the same hearing scheduled for the 10 August 2012. Rumours are that disgruntled members are preparing for further marches and actions. In March after visiting the area, Mr. Richard Masenyani Baloyi, National Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs directed that Lesedi had to restore electrical power to the houses of people with pre-paid meters, not withstanding other outstanding services bills that they might have. Following the Minister’s instruction, Council took a resolution that the power should be reconnected. However, this is easier said than done. The Ratanda Community Forum wants Eskom to take over the services in order to “cut out” the municipality. Eskom, however, finds itself in the difficult position where it is indeed delivering “reticulated” power to households in certain areas – but that was simply due to Municipalities not being able to pay them billions of Rand in outstanding debt. Eskom even took over the infrastructure as part of their “reimbursement.” By selling directly to the public, Eskom is trying to recoup the losses it suffered. With Lesedi the situation has always been that it is a good payer and never been in such a bad position as the municipalities referred to.
Eskom will therefore have to buy the Lesedi infrastructure in order to consider selling “reticulated” power to Ratanda. An additional expense to Eskom in the case of Lesedi would be to take over the infrastructure at extra millions of Rand. The decision of the Minister has thus left Lesedi’s Council in a very difficult situation and Lesedi is looking forward to his promised visit to Ratanda to explain the situation to residents. Lesedi is of the opinion that there should only be one comprehensive bill for all services. If you do not pay part of it, you do not assist the municipality in delivering of services (be it electricity and water distribution or sewer and refuse removal). The municipality may afford to restore electricity to households that owe them millions in arrear services however it is not a sustainable process over a period. “It is very difficult, if not impossible, to execute “ says Moremi. SALGA (SA Local Government Association) Gauteng agrees with this viewpoint. Neither can Eskom afford an exercise that will leave the door open for communities in other municipalities to demand direct sales. That could lead to the downfall of the national supplier. Eskom’s task is merely to supply bulk power to municipalities by law. What worsens the situation is that Lesedi has stopped delivering free 6Kl of water and 50Kwl of electricity to affording households in the community in general. Only indigent people or households across all racial lines and earning less than two state pensions and people earning less than R2 400 per household - now qualify for free services. An audit system has been introduced to identify the real poorest of the poor in communities and cut out the “blood suckers”. Moremi also pointed out that a number of residents in a block of flats in the mainly White community of Rensburg, were recently helped by the municipality regarding free services.
Marievale situation taken to MEC
Several important and urgent questions have been made to the MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, regarding the management at the Marievale Bird Sanctuary. The questions posed by Nigel and Sharon Park DA Clr Wally Labuschagne are: Is there a management problem at the Marievale Bird Sanctuary, relating to the overgrowing of reeds affecting the ecology of the sanctuary? What is the cause of this problem and what are the potential consequences if this issue is not dealt with? Labuschagne also asked what the MEC intended to do about the situation and is there a management plan and budget available to deal with this issue. Questions have also been put to the MEC by the Nigel councilor regarding security at the bird sanctuary. They were: “Is the MEC aware of the allegations that the Marievale Bird Sanctuary is a staging point for criminals to strip assets of the neighbouring Aurora (Grootvlei) Mine? The MEC has been asked what steps are being taken to co-operate with the police in this regard and what security is in place to protect the provincial assets of the Marievale Bird Sanctuary. Regarding co-operation with community organisations to help manage the sanctuary, Labuschagne posed the following questions to the MEC: Is the department co-operating with any local partner, to help manage the sanctuary? Is there any form of long-term plan being developed to manage it? In what way are community partners involved? Can a copy of any such plan be provided? Labuschagne says he is deeply concerned about the present state of the Marievale Bird Sanctuary, which is a major tourist attraction and should not be allowed to deteriorate.

No Olympic medals Godfrey Khotsa Mokoena former Nigel High School learner, failed in his bid to get a medal at the Olympic Games in London. He was a competitor in the long jump but came nowhere near the standard of the opposition from other countries. He failed to jump his best and also had faults and was given the red flag. The event was won by Greg Rutherford of the Great Britain team. Mokoena was originally coached by teacher Rina de Beer at Nigel High School. She immediately saw he had potential and encouraged him to go further, which he did, winning at several major championship athletic meetings where he was successful. He then qualified for the London Olympic Games. His family live in Ratanda.

Dankie dat jy my ook billik met die besigheid behandel het.” Nou wag ek dat die tweede man met my moet kontak. En as hy nie wil nie: Wie weet, dalk beland hy en ek dalk ook in ‘n soortgelyke situasie om mekaar beter te leer ken? – Net terloops, Hansie het ‘n wonderlike matriekafskeid gehad en aan die mense wat destyds gehelp het: “ Baie dankie!”
Nigel and Heidelberg cyclists are invited to participate in a mountain bike challenge event on August 25 and a road race on September 8. The event will start from Coca-Cola, Nigel which has a 66km, 44km and 22km route. It is flat and not so technical, meaning it can be completed by novice mountain bike riders. The challenge is being held by Springs Girls High School in partnership with the Impala Cycle Club. There are plenty of prizes to be won for the first three men and women in the 66 km event. The road race offers a 93,9km, 60km and a 20km route for the younger riders or the notso-fit! The race starts and finishes at the Nigel Dam where there is ample parking and offers a variety of entertainment. Picnic sites are available and there will be food and drinks. There will be prize monies for all categories There will be lucky draws and a competition with a top range bicycle as the prize. Wat ‘n ontnugtering was dit vir my vrou toe een sakeman aan die lag gegaan het oor die armoede van ‘n ander mens en die tweede een sarkasties ‘n das wou skenk. Ek het destyds ‘n brief in Rekord geskryf dat die twee manne soos hane was wat op hulle eie mishope sit en kraai het. Hartseerste van alles was dat die een sakeman self baie arm groot geword het; hy was ‘n persoonlike kennis van my vrou. Die ander man het sy van sien af geken. Die twee het nie op die brief gereageer nie – om verstaanbare redes. So het 3-4 jaar verby

Volkies se Trave ‘La Musica grootste triomf
Op die vloeiende note van sang, musiek en danse uit verskillende wêreld lande, het die Trave ‘La Musica, revue van Hoër Volkskool, Heidelberg gesorg vir on- vergeetlike aande van plesier wat die triomferende skool en die skrywer en regisseur, Margaret du Plessis, groot eer aangedoen het. Die kern van die verhaal was ‘n klompie mense wat aan die begin hul “soetkyse” gepak het om op ‘n wêreldreis te gaan, waar hul verskillende leidrade moes opvolg om hulle na ‘n
skat te lei. Dit het hulle op die ou einde in hul eie land gevind - die skat van jou eie mense wat verwoord is in Kaapse Draai, met ietwat van ‘n “twist”. In ‘n treffende verwisseling van tonele wat knap deur die dekorspan gehanteer was, het die musiek en danse aan-gename herinneringe by die toeskouers agter gelaat. Die klankproduksie van Riaan van Rensburg was meesterlik.

Not many people know that there is a place in Hallgate, Nigel, where people from 18 years upwards are helped to make new lives for themselves. The premises, formerly a farm, have been converted into what is now the Freedom Recovery Centre. The name says it all. It caters for those who are addicted to alcohol and drugs and the main thing is that people go there of their own free will and not with any court order. It was founded by Pastor Derick Matthews who says, “When I saw the land I just knew I had to open up a re-habilitation centre there” That was four years ago and his enthusiasm has not waned nor has he ever looked back. The centre has been an amazing success and does not only cater for local people but for those who come from as far as Durban and Pretoria etc. When DRC opened it’s doors in December 2008 it was just Pastor Derick and his parents, Martie and Cyril – plus a dream to help as many people as they could to regain their freedom from addiction. Five addicts started at the centre, who all wanted to break from their past. At first the homestead on the smallholding was enough but soon the need became so high that a stable had to be converted into sleeping quarters. Today FRC has the capacity for 40 full-time recovering addicts – or residents as they are known at the centre. Pastor Derick has been in the re-hab facility for 13 years. From a young age he knew it was the field he wanted to work in. FRC accommodates people on six month, three month and six weeks programmes. The six month programme is divided into two levels. Residents reflect on where they are coming from and breaking with the past. On the second level they focus on where they are going to. Various other aspects come into this course, such as group therapy, health and nutrition and emorional healing, to name a few. Once

residents have completed their programme they have an option to enter into a third phase where they act as coaches to other recovering addicts. One resident who lost a leg as a result of a heroin overdose, turned his life around and is now gearing himself to raise awareness at schools about drugs and how they affected his life. “In this type of ministry we deal with life and death on a daily basis,” says Pastor Derick. “At FRC we believe that in most cases addiction is a plaster that is put over a deeper sore,” says Pieter Stols, a counselor at the centre. Sometimes there are serious underlying issues, such as abuse, neglect or trauma, wich need treatment.” The FRC is grateful for sponsorships and looks to the future when extensions will be made to FRC. Residents have weekends free and days when parents can visit. They have formed their own sports activities and although three healthy meals are provided, some of the residents also love the opportunity to cook in their own kitchen, recently retiled by the Nigel Rotary Anns. They attend church in Nigel and no-one forces them to go, they all want to go.
