P3 Mrs Mayor prefers Pieter Wessels life in Sandton won’t be re-built Lesedi’s Executive Mayor Cllr. Lerato Moleka, is now boasting with a new address, not in Ratanda or Heidelberg but allegedly in Sandton, one of the most sought after and expensive areas in the country with its splendid mansions and glittering personalities. As rumour has it, the Mayor took refuge from the situation in Ratanda where her home and those of other council members were burnt down or damaged in a fury of riots some months ago, to settle in the relatively safe area of Sandton. Rekord received a letter from a resident of Heidelberg in which he alleged that the Mayor has moved to Sandton. The letter was presented to the Mayor for comments. Her responding letter partly addresses the matter, although she would not divulge where she is now residing. “The Executive Mayor and other Councillors’ houses were burnt down during the riots which ensued in the municipality in March 2012. It is in the best interests of the Executive Mayor, the other Councillors and their families not to divulge where they are staying for now. That will definitely constitute a security breach. Further, Council has not yet made a determination on how all affected Councillors’ properties and security will be enhanced.”
An allegation that the mayor is using her official vehicle for non official matters, like travelling to places such as Qua Qua, extracted the following response: “In terms of the Mayoral Handbook, the Mayor has the discretion to use the municipal vehicle as she deems fit at the expense of the municipality provided it is for a reasonable purpose.” No reference was made to an allegation that her husband uses her car. An accusation in the letter that the Mayor’s car was damaged in an accident and that the matter was not reported to Lesedi, met with a simple reaction which leaves the matter wide open for speculation: “Accidents that result in damage to Council vehicles are reported as per the administrative requirement and the Mayor’s car is no exception in this regard.”
Since fire ravaged the Pieter Wessels Home in Dunnottar a few years ago, there has been much speculation about future plans for rebuilding. Now its official – the former home for the frail and elderly will not be re-built. People lost their lives in the fire and the survivors were sent to various other care centres. People who donated money have been trying to find out what is going to happen regarding the home. Donations were given and some made trust funds. The Rekord has now been successful in obtaining a statement from the Trustees of
the Home. Andre Scholtz, chairperson of the Board of Trustees for the home states, “I have been advised that the activity observed at the Pieter Wessels site is aimed at cleaning up the property and to salvage whatever can be used elsewhere in our structures for the elderly. “Unfortunately it has become evident that the Pieter Wessels Frail Care Centre and Community Centre operated as an uneconomically viable institution and will therefore not be rebuilt. “We are in the process of contacting the donors with the intention of returning donations so generously received.”

While the alcoholic gives all sorts of reasons as to why they cannot or should not stop the fact is that they need to stop (that is STOP – not slow down). Busted
A total of five suspects were arrested last week on charges of business robbery, hijacking, being in possession of hijacked vehicles and unlicensed firearms and ammunition. At about 10:00 am, five armed men robbed a scrap metal business in Balfour and got away with cash. The suspects were using a blue Mercedes A160- and Nigel SAPS was alerted. Soon after, members of Balfour SAPS were in pursuit of the vehicle. The suspects were arrested when the vehicle was cornered into a yard and three firearms and cell phones were
seized. Two suspects managed to evade capture and hijacked a red Mazda 323 on the main road in Nigel. Not long after, the car was spotted in Duduza. A short chase ensued and the hijacker’s car spun out of control and stalled the vehicle. They attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended by Duduza SAPS members. The Mazda, a 9mm pistol and two cell phones were seized. Investigations are ongoing and no further information can be given at this time, due to the sensitive nature of the investigation.
New water meters
A very different water meter has been devised and installation will be over a period of time by the Ekurhuleni Municipality. The new meter stands above the ground and are easily recognizable. They are white with a blue lid and are above ground. The new meters will make reading easier and this can be done manually, from the municipality or even from a car. This will make billing much more efficient and the new meters also include a small crystal display. The meters are much easier to read than the old ones. But this is a project which will take time. Ekurhuleni has recently come out shining in the water conservation water demand management awards and bagged the prestigious Platinum Blue Stop Status. A total of 15 entries were received. The project was highly successful. Numerous broken or missing water meters were reported. These have been replaced or repaired where necessary. The project involved 242 as well as bulk consumers.

Trees to be pruned soon! The pruning of pavement trees in Dunnottar and Nigel started a few months ago, but seems to have come to a halt. In Dunnottar some trees are causing a hazard to motorists in certain streets, with branches overhanging into the roads. Some people have made calls to the Nigel Customer Care Centre, requesting trees be
pruned but their calls have gone unheeded. “Please prune soon” is the appeal from Dunnottar residents. “This is why we pay rates and taxes and the trees are not our responsibility”. A Nigel man said he had attempted to prune a large old tree on his pavement but simply could not manage it as the branches were too thick.

Dikwels gebeur dit na die verlies van ‘n selfoon, skootrekenaar of kamera dat u ingelig word dat “die items gespesifiseer moes gewees het om dekking daarvoor te geniet”. Hierdie week se bespreking handel oor hoe om die teleurstelling van die bogenoemde scenario te vermy. Wanneer moet ek my bessitings spesifiseer? Die eenvoudigste antwoord is: Wanneer jy dit saam met jou uit die huis uit kan neem. Die meeste korttermynprodukte dek items terwyl dit binne jou huis is. Die gevaar wat jy loop, is as jou selfoon uit jou hand uit gegryp word of jou kamera val en breek; dan gaan dit nie gedek wees tensy jy dit gespesifiseer het nie. Van die belangrikste items wat apart gespesifiseer moet word, is selfone, skootrekenaars, kameras, navigasietoestelle, draagbare speletjietoestelle en juweliersware wat kosbaar is. Wat gaan dit my ekstra kos om sodanige items te spesifiseer? U moet in ag neem dat u wye dekking saam met die spesifisering van‘n item kry. Die toevallige breek en net eenvoudige wegraak van ‘n item, is gevare wat hieronder gedek is. Jy betaal ‘n addisionele premie per item wat jy spesifiseer, wat weer gekoppel word aan daardie item se waarde en tipe risiko. ‘n Selfoon sal byvoorbeeld duurder wees om te spesifiseer as juwele, omdat selfone baie maklik verlore raak, maklik val en baie gesteel word, waarteenoor mense meer geneig is om hulle juwele op te pas. Hoe word ek uitbetaal of, in versekeringsterme, skadeloos gestel? Omdat u premie betaal op die bedrag wat u gekies het, kan dit nogal probleme veroorsaak wanneer u eis uitbetaal word en dit minder is as die bedrag waarop u premie betaal het. Die rede hiervoor is eenvoudig. Die versekeringsmaatskappy het die reg om u items te vervang, kontant te skik of te herstel. As u selfoon drie jaar oud is, is die kanse goed dat dit nie meer in produksie is nie. Dan word dit vervang met die model wat dit opgevolg het. Tegnologie raak al hoe goedkoper. Om ‘n nuwe selfoon te kry, kan dalk nou goedkoper wees as drie jaar gelede. Die versekeringmaatskappy sal die item vevang met ‘n nuwe item of die kontant gelykstaande aan wat dit die versekeringsmaatskappy sou kos om dit te vervang of reg te maak.
“Die vrou is primêr die versorger in die huis en terwyl sy na almal omsien, versorg niemand haar nie. Sy kan egter nie sonder versorging klaarkom nie en daarom moet sy haarself vertroetel deur dinge te doen wat sy geniet,” sê Magdie de Kock, ere-president van die VLU, voorsitter van Grootvlei VLU en komiteelid van die Wêreldbond van Plattelandse Vroue, met sy tien miljoen lede wêreldwyd wat volgende jaar in Indië vergader. Magdie het Rensburg VLU op 19 September by hul fondsinsamelingsprojek toegespreek en gesê die organisasie bestaan al meer as tagtig jaar waartydens lede met vertroue toegerus word. Hierdie jaar fokus die VLU op die tema: Koester en Bewaar. Terwyl die vrou dien en ander versorg, ontstaan die vraag of sy tyd vir haarself inruim. “Ons moet onsself volmaak sodat ons aan ander kan uitdeel. Jy moet gelukkig wees in jouself en om dit te bereik, moet ‘n mens begin deur jouself te versorg. Jy moet tyd afknyp om aan jou belangstellings te spandeer. Koester wat die Vader uniek in jou gemaak het sodat ons ook dinge rondom ons kan bewaar,” het Magdie gesê.

Laste van Lesedi Sentrum druk swaar Lesedi Community Centre (LCC) wat God’s Acre as Heidelberg se bekendste gemeenskapsentrum vervang het, is nou gerat en ingestel op die behoeftes van almal in die gemeenskap, maar ernstige finansiële knelpunte verhinder dat die dienste op hierdie tydstip na behore gelewer kan word. Só sê Jan Combrinck, bestuurder van die sentrum wat ook in dié rol by God’s Acre gedien het. Laas genoemde was meer ingestel op voedsel-voorsiening terwyl LCC die gemeenskap omvattend wil dien bo en behalwe voedselvoorsiening. Die geldskaarste by LCC het so erg geraak dat Combrinck die afgelope drie weke lelik moes rondspring om salarisse te betaal. Ook die kragvoorsiening het ‘n kritieke laagtepunt bereik . Daar sal nou afgeskakel moet word tot moontlik slegs een keer per Sondag. “Ek wil net ‘n ernstige beroep op almal doen wat die Here en die gemeenskap lief het, om na vore te kom en te help met skenkings sodat ons veral op die lang termyn aan ons doelwitte uitvoering kan gee,” het hy gesê. Lede van die bestuur van LCC het vroeër vanjaar besluit dat almal in hulle eie persoonlike geldelike behoeftes moet voorsien sodat die sentrum die gemeenskap ten volle kan dien. Daar moet dus borge vir die bestuur en funksies van LCC gevind word en mense soos Combrinck moet borge vir hulself vind. Gelukkig vir Combrinck het twee borge reeds ingespring om hom met sy persoonlike uitgawes te help. Die Orion Motor Groep in Heidelberg se direksie, Morne Roos, sy pa Johan en suster Liezel Rall, het besluit om die paaiemente van Combrinck se motor namens hom af te betaal. Dit volg nadat Combrinck die groep vroeër versoek het om die motor weens sy finansiële verknorsing, terug te neem. ‘n Tweede borg, Peet Pieterse , Hoof Uitvoerende Beampte van Open Water Advance Research Solutions, ‘n forensiese ouditeurs- en risikobeheer maatskappy, het van Combrinck se voorligting en berading oor dwelms by skole verneem en toegetree om sy persoonlike maandelikse uitgawes ‘n tyd lank te dek. Buitendach se belange dien, het die gebou na sy afsterwe aan die Kairos gemeente van die Apostoliese Geloofsending in Heidelberg oorgedra en ‘n bestuurskomitee is in Heidelberg saamgestel om die Lesedi Gemeenskapsentrum se doelwitte uit te stippel en te verwesenlik. Volgens die doelstellings wil LCC dienste en geleenthede aan almal in die breë gemeenskap bied deur middel van interaksie met kursusse en programme. Daar is plek vir seminare, vergaderings en funksies. “Ons wil pro-aktief optree om die gemeenskap se behoeftes aan te spreek en om hulle te bemagtig. Ons gaan bv. professionele mense kry om te help met die ontwikkeling van die jeug.” Armoede, werkloosheid, gesondheidsprobleme, verwaarloosde vroue en kinders en tiener swangerskappe is van die knellendste probleme in die samelewing. “Ons sal graag ‘n hoë sorgsentrum vir siekes wil begin wat dit nie kan bekostig nie en wil ook graag ‘n biblioteek hier inrig.” “Boere en die SA Weermag dra mildelik tot ons voedselbehoeftes by. ‘n Plek soos Heidelberg en Ratanda met sy 80 000 inwoners, het ‘n werkloosheidsyfer van 24%. Medals for SADF members
Many spectators enjoyed the annual medal parade at 1 Construction Regiment, Dunnottar, when members were rewarded for bravery, long service and for participating in external deployment. The medals were presented by Acting Officer Commanding of 1 Construction Regiment, Lt Col Frederik Adriaan Snyman. The march was accompanied by the band of the National Ceremonial Guard, under the baton of Maj. Strugnel. In his address, Lt Col Snyman congratulated all those who were awarded medals for their outstanding service to the Regiment. The unit is under the command of Lt Col Snyman and second in command is Lt Col Molise Joseph Mokhethi. The Regimental Sgt Maj. of the Unit is Mas-
ter Warrant Officer Mluleki Pedro Obose. They deploy combat ready competent soldiers internally, as well as at the external borders of South Africa. The countries being supported are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and the Central African Republic. The unit’s specially trained artisans are involved in plumbing, painting, electrical etc. and the repair of bases. Construction machine operators are also deployed for the rehabilitation and maintenance of roads in the above mentioned countries. This is also important to internal projects undertaken by the 1 Construction Regiment. Members were awarded medals for long service and certificates were presented to members who have served 10 years.

Leadership change at Campus The Executive Management team of Sedibeng College announced a leadership change at Heidelberg Campus. Dis die eerste keer dat Heidelberg so buitengewoon goed vaar om meer as een deelnemer in die kompetisie te hê.Die spanning sal op 3 November breekpunt bereik wanneer die wenners aangekondig word by Batter Boys in Montana, Pretoria. Die organiseerders is Beyond 2000 en SAATME, The South African Association of Talent, Modelling and Entertainment. Dis vanjaar die sewentiende keer dat die kompetisie aangebied word. Die doel met die kompetisie is om die wenners ‘n geleentheid te gun om ‘n jaar lank geld vir liefdadigheid in te samel. Voor die kompetisie begin, moet deelnemers elk reeds R1 500 insamel om te toon wat in hulle steek. Inskrywingsgeld en vervoerkoste is bykomend. Registrasie vind op Donderdag 1 November plaas. Tragic lost for Rekordpaper
Hoffie Hoffeldt, Rekord journalist
Hoffie Hoffeldt, a journalist at the Rekord for the past three years, died in his office on Friday last week, after suffering a massive stroke. He was 67 years of age. His death shocked his colleagues and the many friends he had in Nigel and Heidelberg. Hoffie was well-known and liked in both towns. He was a dedicated journalist and had a wonderful sense of humour. His love for the profession was reflected in the many stories he wrote. Hoffie is survived by his wife Mariaan. He also leaves a daughter and brother. He will be sadly missed by many people. No details are available about his funeral at the time of going to press. Rest in peace dear Hoffie. It was a privilege to known you. Hair salon burgled Thieves robbed Picasso hair salon in Kingsway, Nigel on Wednesday night last week and stole electrical equipment and other goods valued at thousands of rands. The robbers gained access removing some of the roof tiles and then went through the square removable board in the ceiling. They stole hair dryers, other hair dressing equipment, jewellery, a fridge and a microwave
oven. They smashed a security door lock to get out of the premises to get away. Police are investigating the robbery and extra security has been put in place at the salon. The thieves first tried to gain access to a doggy parlour next door, but did not enter the premises after seeing a major alarm system which had been installed.

Carnival in Dunnottar
The Dunnottar SAPS is organising a community carnival on Saturday, October 27, which promises to attract a lot of people. The event will be held on the Harvard Park and starts at 09h00. The purpose is to make the community aware of the different police units such as the Flying Squad, Mounted Unit, Airwing and the K9 unit (Dog Unit) and that they are here to protect and serve. The carnival also aims to promote the partnership between the police and the public (Community Policing Forum). There will be plenty of ac-
tivities at the carnival, including a potjiekos competition, a tug of war competition, kiddies corner for the youth as well as various stalls. There will also be a competition for “Miss & Mr Petite Dunnottar, Miss & Mr Teen Dunnottar and Mr & Miss Dunnottar.” There will be various police units on the day, to make the community aware of the different units within the SAPS, such as the Flying Squad, Mounted Unit, Airwing and the K9 unit (Dog Unit). Former Dunnottar resident, nine-year-old Michael Greyling, participated in a two-day swimming coaching course, held by Penny Heyns former South African Olympic gold medalist. Michael, who is keen on the sport, was delighted to be part of the group from Port Elizabeth. The school, where the course was held, has a large indoor pool and Michael said the course has helped him a lot and was full of admiration for the champion swimmer. Micheal described the course as “amazing” and said he learned a lot from Penny Heyns. The highlight of the course was when the swimming champion let Michael have her three gold Olympic medals round his neck and presented him with a special book with his name on it.

Krieket sprankel Nigel Krieket Klub, met sy sprankelende samehorigheidsbesef en ‘n gevatheid tussen die manne wat die lagspiere kort-kort prikkel, openbaar die wil en veggees van ‘n tier wanneer hy sy opponente op die speelveld aanvat. Die eerste span het verlede seisoen tweede in die liga van die Oostelike Krieket Unie met sy twee en twintig klubs geëindig terwyl die tweede span sy afdeling gewen het. Met briljante boulers soos snelbouler Bertie (Blits) Botha en kolwer Morris Enslin, is Nigel hoog in aansien. Morris het verlede jaar teen Rynsoord ‘n allemintige 141 (nie uit nie) aangeteken, terwyl Botha se beste vertoning met die bal vyf paaltjies vir nege lopies was. Adriaan Prinsloo, woordvoerder van die klub, sê hulle het verlede jaar slegs twee spanne ingeskryf, maar die ledetal het so gegroei dat hulle vanjaar vier spanne in die veld gaan stoot. Hulle gaan in die eerste, tweede, derde en vyfde liga deelneem. Die Voorsitter is Wouter Kriel. Die speler wat teenwoordig was met die onderhoud, wat die langste aan die
klub verbonde is, is Morris Enslin wat nege jaar gelede by die klub begin het en aan en af lid gebly het. Nigel Krieket Klub het in 1963 begin en die huidige President Hennie Stoop loop al ‘n stuk of vier dekades saam met die klub. Nigel het nou ‘n stuk of vyftig aktiewe geregistreerde lede hoewel die totale aantal geregistreerde lede op ver meer as ‘n honderd staan. Oefentye is Dinsdae en Donderdae vanaf 16:30 by die sportgronde op Jim Fouche Park. Daar word tussen 14 en 16 wedstryde in die liga gespeel. Vanjaar se liga het op 13 Oktober begin en duur tot Maart 2013. Lidmaatskap is R400 per jaar en daarvoor kry die manne lekker krieketgeriewe. Die gebou gaan ook vanjaar verbreek word. Daar sal vanjaar twaalf tuiswedstryde wees waarvan sowat die helfte dié van die eerste span sal wees. Pedal power for 93,9km! Bad weather failed to deter enthusiastic cyclists from taking part in the 93.9km race organised by Impala Platinum, which started and finished at Nigel Dam. The event was in aid of Springs Girls High School and many cyclists from the Nigel and Heidelberg area defied the rain and pedaled their way over the grueling route. Mist delayed some of the event, but the enthusiasm was great among the cyclists who decided to
brave the weather. There was cash for the successful and a lot of lucky draws. Many emails have been received by the organizers, complimenting them on the event and saying they will definitely participate again next year. The route was marked in the rain the day before the event and even potholes were filled. Nigel Dam has proved to be an excellent venue for such an event and, despite the rain, people did enjoy themselves at the finish.
