As many of you are aware we at Heidelberg Methodist Church have visiting teams that not only visit folk at home but also take time to visit folk in our two hospitals (Life Suikerbosrand Clinic and AG Visser Public Hospital). While our teams do most of the visiting when

I can (wish I had more time to do this more regularly) I also visit at both hospitals and I would like to share my experiences that I have had in the last six months at both hospitals. VISITS
I have always been welcomed at Life Suikerbosrand Clinic and the folk have always understood that I am a minister and cannot always visit inside of visiting times. I always try to respect the duties of the staff and will move away when they need to work with the patients but the staff has always been understanding and appreciative of my visits. My relationship with the staff and the hospital is that they have the freedom to call me if a patient or the family or friends need some help with working through the problems they face with the illness of themselves or within the family. Sadly I need to say that I have not always been welcomed outside of visiting times at

CLEANLINESS, ASSISTANCE AND FOOD Life Suikerbosrand Clinic has never been a “dirty” hospital and it has always been pleasant to walk through the wards at any time of the day. When I have spoken to the patients and the families I have generally received positive feedback on the cleanliness, care and food that they have received. There have been the remote times when some folk have been unhappy but when taken up with management the problems are solved quickly and efficiently. AG Visser Hospital in the past has been a totally different situation. The utter filth, don’t care attitude and food has had a lot to be desired with most people complaining constantly and even asking for food to be taken to them because they either do not get

My recent visits have been met with a clean well cared for hospital and the patients have been well looked after. When chatting with the patients (of all races) I have only received positive feedback on the cleanliness, care and food. Once again there have been rare occasions where someone was not happy but when taken up with the staff and management it has been cleared up. So the bottom line is that we at Heidelberg can be pleased with our both hospitals and I feel that we need to give credit to the hospitals and their staff for the effort they put in to care for the sick of our beautiful town. Well done to the management and staff, please keep it up your efforts are greatly appreciated.

On many occasions in the past I (and my wife who is also a minister) have been turned away from the hospital because it is not visiting time and they “do not care if you are a minister”. Well in the last while there has been a dramatic change in attitude and I thank the management and staff of the AG Visser hospital for understanding that it is not always possible and practical to visit within visiting hours. I (and our visiting teams) have been made most welcome and with that our working relationship with the staff has improved dramatically. While we do not get called to the hospital all that often we do make a point of talking to the families when we are there.

Residents at Zanele Mbeki home for the disabled in Dunnotar have been struggling for more than 9 months to receive their promised salary of R120 a month, after constant complaints they finally received their promised money on Thursday April 4. The disabled residents get a promised total of R1200 a month, 90% of this goes to the home to cover their accommodation and only 10% of this amount the residents receive for pocket money. More than 9 months have passed and every month the
residents receive an excuse to why the financial board could not give them their money. “Most of the residents do not have friends or family to come and visit or even help them with the smallest of luxuries, so this small amount of money is one of the few benefits we still receive” commented a resident that grew tired of all the ongoing lies. After a long struggle and a chain of complaints the financial adviser finally had some good news to report. The residents at the home received their money a day after the case was investigated.

U polis sal uitgereik word en u premies gevorder word tot en met die dag dat u ‘n eis aanmeld. Dan word u stellings ondersoek. Voorbeeld: Indien u verklaar het dat u vir 5 jaar aaneenlopende versekering gehad het, gaan hulle u vorige versekeringsmaatskappy kontak om dit te bevestig. Indien hulle vind dat u slegs 2 jaar in plaas van 5 jaar dekking gehad het, kan en mag u eis geweier word! Die problem waarmee u te kampe het, is dat u stem u kontrak is en dit bewys kan word dat u dit so bevestig het. Mag dit so gedoen word? Ja, u, as kliënt, is die party wat nie die waarheid gepraat het nie en daarom sal u eis geweier kan word. Die doel van hierdie skrywe is nie om u bang te maak nie, maar om u in te lig. Luister aandagtig as die operateur u skakel en antwoord so deeglik as moontlik. Die veiligste is natuurlik om ‘n goeie makelaar te gaan sien en advies te kry.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan has published its new valuation roll in accordance of the Municipal Property Rates Act of 2004 that will be implemented by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality on July 1, 2013. This indicates that businesses, small holdings and farms are in for a real shock. The valuation roll is available on the internet on the Ekurhuleni website under e-services (Valuations 2013). In an item (Item A-F 212013) tabled at the March 2013 Council Meeting on March 20, 2013 clearly indicates that the new valuation roll (2013) has the following increases compared to 2009 before objections: Government properties - 53.14%. Business & Industrial - 30.71%. Residential - 0.35%. Small holdings & Farms -117.1%. Vacant land - 41.80%. Other properties -94.33%. Municipal Properties 46.73%. This will result in an average increase in the valuation roll of 23.21% (much higher if the municipal properties are taken out of the calculation). It is also questionable why municipal properties shows a decrease of 46.73%, is it because of a lack of maintenance or did the company who did the valuations overstated the values in 2009. The 53.14% increase in government properties is also a huge concern, the same valuation company valued these properties in 2009 and does this indicate that residents have subsidised government properties over the past 5 year? Residents, businesses and farm owners should/must object against these abnormal increases in the valuation roll if they are affected or pay the price and has only until 19 April 2013 at 16:00 to do so. ‘n Passasier van ‘n minibus is noodlottig gewond, nadat rowers die Suikerbosoord vir Bejaardes vroegoggend probeer oorrompel het, met ‘n poging tot motordiefstal. Die oggend van Dinsdag, 9 April is twee sekuriteitswagte, wat aan diens was by die hek van die Oord, oorval. Crime Stop het onraad vermoed en ‘n alarm sein na hul beheerkamer uitgestuur. Die polisie het onmiddelik gearriveer en ‘n verdagte inhegtenis geneem. Die verdagtes is vas getrek en ondervra en die SAPD het begin soek na ‘n wit Opel Corsa bakkie. Crime Stop en Emis Sekuriteit het dadelik hulp verleen en die bakkie agternagesit. Op die N3 vanaf die R23 het ‘n wit Toyota Minibus by die jaagtog aangesluit en skote is gevuur, waarin die drywer van die minibus noodlottig gewond is. Die drywer van die minibus het probeer weghardloop en by ‘n plaas opgedaag waar hy hulp gaan soek het. Die inwoners op die plaas het van die poging tot roof gehoor en die polisie ontbied. Die polisie het die verdagte op die plaas gearresteer, asook die bestuurder van die bakkie. Niemand is tydens die voorval beseer nie te danke aan die veilige en flink optrede van die SAPD en Crime Stop.
Rowers kom voor as herstelwerkers Inwoners van Sheffieldweg in Nigel was geskok en heeltemal verward, nadat 4 gewapende rowers die gesin onkant gevang het. Die aanvallers het op 11 April omstreeks elfuur hulself as herstelwerkers voorgestel en net skielik die familie beveel met agressiewe harde stemme om na die middel van die vertrek te beweeg. Die rowers het handwapens en skroewedraaiers uitgepluk. Die eienares van die huis is geforseer om saam met die rowers na die slaapkamer te gaan om die kluis vir hul oop te sluit. Sy het hul vergesel en die rowers het met talle juwele en geld die perseel verlaat. Hulle het ook aanspraak gemaak op alle selfone en rekenaar tablette, asook elektroniese toerusting. Die elektroniese apparate is in die swembad gegooi. Die verdagtes het vermoedelik in ‘n wit Chevrolet Lumina weggejaag.

Residents of Ekurhuleni will once again be given an opportunity to shape the developmental agenda of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality by taking part in the Draft Integrated Development Planning (IDP) and Budget public consultative meetings. EMM valuation roll The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan has published its new valuation roll in accordance of the Municipal Property Rates Act of 2004 that will be implemented by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality on 1 July 2013. Property owners should enquire about the section 49 notice if they did not received it. The Section 49 notice is very important and will among others show the usage, category and market value of the property in question. It is of utmost importance that the property owner ensures that all the information of the property is correct on the section 49 notice. The property owner has the right to (MUST) lodge an objection if any of the information on the section 49 notice is incorrect. The objection period will close on 19 April 2013 at 16:00 and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has indicated that no late objections will be accepted. The complete objection forms must be returned by hand to the Municipal Offices where the valuation roll can be inspected and no form of electronic submission will be accepted. Residents must make a copy of their objection form and make sure it is signed by the official receiving the original objection form with the date and time of handing in. IRASA will assist residents free of charge should they need help in objecting to the valuation roll. Resident should note that they may appeal against the valuation if their objection is not successful and the appeals will be heard by the Valuation Appeal Board which, is a tribunal appointed by the Provincial Government. Emergency and disaster capacity The tornado incident that caused havoc in Masechaba Extension 2 in Duduza, over a year and half ago served as a harsh reminder of the importance of having localised disaster management offices. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in response to the need of a Disaster Management Satellite Office to service KwaThema, Tsakane, Duduza, Langaville and surrounding areas opened an office at the Tsakane Customer Care Centre. This will be a central point from which humanitarian assistance and relief efforts will be coordi-nated in cases of disaster. A new well-equipped Tsakane Fire Station which was built for over R14.3 million was also handed over to the community. The station boasts the following specialised emergency vehicles a major pump, ambulances, veld fire and utility vehicles among other equipment. The municipality unveiled 10 new specialized emergency vehicles. These vechicles will be deployed to various parts of Ekurhuleni bringing to 20 the number of vehicles, that have been purchased between the previous and current financial year with costing over R41 million. MMC Siboza said the municipality has enlisted the service of about 200 Fire Brigade Reserve Force as part of intensifying youth skills development and empowerment which in turn will contribute to job creation in the region. Executive mayor Clr Gungubele said the municipality is in the process of procuring 9 paramedic vehicles, 40 ambulances and upgrading its force with an additional 170 Fire Fighter & Emergency Care Practitioners before June this year.

Suikerbosrand aftree-oord in Heidelberg het met ’n projek begin, waar hulle al die alombekende elektriese geysers vervang met die meer populêre ‘groen’ geysers wat met sonkrag werk. Hierdie projek is met behulp van THT Eiendomme moontlik gemaak wat die oord en sy inwoners finansieël bystaan met die vervanging van die ou elektriese geysers. Die nuwe Sonpaneel geysers gaan dus beteken dat die bejaarde inwoners van die aftree-oord nie meer bekommerd hoef te wees oor die ekstra uitgawes van die elektrisiteit aangedrewe geysers nie. Die bejaarde inwoners is baie dankbaar en opgewonde oor hierdie verandering omrede die meerderheid van die inwoners slegs ‘n staatspensioen ontvang. Sonpaneel aangedrewe geysers is al op ’n paar van die huise en geboue geinstalleer as ’n proeflopie, die inwoners en oord bestuur is dus baie beindruk met die vernuwing. Nadat die voertuig die perseel verlaat het, het die SAPD die voertuig gemerk by ‘n vulstasie en met nadere ondersoek het die verdagtes uit die voertuig gespring en pad gevat. Een van die verdagtes is gearresteer en sal voor die hof verskyn vir die besit van ‘n ongelisensieerde vuurwapen en ammunisie. Die ander drie verdagtes is nog op voet. Nigel High 50 year Troeteldiere soek tuiste Jubilee celebration Back in the days when Nigel was still just a mining camp a school was built out of stone which was called “Die klip Skool”. At that time the unveiling of the stone was done by the mayor of Nigel, Mr Koen on May 10, 1963. Years later the school became inadequate and in 1949 a new school opened which was called Nigel High School and was infused with another high school, Hoërskool John Vorster. In 1962 the school divided into 2 and in 1963 the new Nigel High School under the principal of Mr. L. Spruyt was started for English speaking pupils. The school was built with a hostel that can house up to 130 boarders.
Mr. Spruyt was principal until 1966. Mr. Combrinck took over from 1967 to 1981 when he passed away suddenly. Ms. J Cameron who was at the time vice principal was appointed acting principal. Mr. Jordaan took over in 1982 and he then retired in 1994 and Ms. Macdonald took over the reigns until 2010. Mrs. Dolinscheck was appointed principal in 2011 untill present. On May 4, 2013 the school will celebrate their 50 year Jubilee anniversary on the Nigel High School grounds. The day will begin with a parade starting at the Nigel Town Hall at 9;00 the morning, loads of fun activities will. Food and beverages will be available.

‘n Groep fietsryers het met geesdriftige entoesiasme die lang pad na Life Queenstown Privaat Hospitaal in die Oos Kaap aangedurf. Op Woensdag oggend, 10 April het die fietsryers by Suikerbos Life Kliniek in Heidelberg vir die “1965 ride” wedren aangetree. Die byeenkoms is geborg deur Life Health Care. Die doel van die wedren is om geld in te samel vir beurse vir skoliere in die Queenstown omgewing vir verdere studies. Die fietsryers en organiseerders het versnapperings ontvang, waarna hulle ywerig die wedren begin het. Ongeveer 27 fietsryers het aan die byeenkoms deelgeneem. Twaalf Personeellede van Suikerbos Life Kliniek het saam met die fietsryers weggespring en hul vergesel tot by Frankfort.
