Three died in car crash

On the Nigel Springs Road three men lost their lives and another was seriously injured when a red Toyota Prado collided head on with a construction vehicle on April 25 at around 13h00. It is still unclear what happened but the Ekurhuleni Metro Police are still investigating. The three men in the construction vehicle were on their way to their working site when the accident occured.
According to a spokesman the three men in the construction vehicle worked for the Water and Sanitation Department of Ekurhuleni in Nigel. Two of the men, Piet Tusi and Nikodeumis Malekawho died instantly on impact. The driver of the red Toyota Prado also died at the scene. The third passenger escaped death but is seriously injured, who was rushed off to Parkland for medical care.

Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church Most of us can share that we have lost a loved one or a very good friend. Many of us can mourn and be sad at that loss but also be joyful in that we know that the person has taken up his/her room with Jesus. But this still does not take away the sadness of not seeing the person in our life on earth again. The truth is that many people never deal with the passing of a loved one and many also feel that they have dealt with the passing of their loved one but all that they have done is pushed the sad event deep into their soul and tend to hope that the pain will go away. None of these situations are good and can actually be the cause of emotional instability that gets diagnosed as everything except the fact that we are still mourning the loss of a loved one. There are a group of people in the USA who acknowledged this problem and took the time to develop a course that helps us move from that place of mourning to a place of joy. This is the same group of people who developed DivorceCare presently being run at Life Ministries (you can contact Eleanor on 082 928 8566 for more details). The GriefShare course helps us to realize that we are not the only ones mourning a loved one and the feelings that we experience is in fact normal and others experience them as well. We have run this course at Heidelberg Methodist Church for the last five years and the relief and joy gained by the people who have been on the course has been tremendous. Contaminated river
For the last 5 to 6 months municipality workers have been busy connecting sewage pipes next to the Blesbokspruit river. Households living next to the working site have been complaining about noise and the smell that comes from the sewerage. Call upon call, has been made to the municipality to find out when the work will be done but no answer has been given. And the work never seems to go anywhere. Over weekends the workers turn on a noisy diesel pump that keeps the neighbourhood from doing their normal routine, some houses have been affected by the smell so bad that constant blocked sinuses keeps families ill. On April 19 and 20 rain fell heavily in Heidelberg that caused the sewerage to even smell worse. The municipality got rid of the raw sewerage by draining it into the river which flows into the Vaaldam and eventually become our drinking water. Residents in the area feel that this is not at all good for the environment or their families. The foul stench with the awful scenery is destroying a lot of houses usual routines. The occupants living near the working site said that the view they use to have of the river is now a vulgar site of sewerage and rubble. The municipality reported that they have to fix the drains and pipes, but in return the occupants living there said that no form of progress have been shown. The sewerage that flows into the hole and then gets pumped out into the river

Beware of con artists The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality encourages job seekers to familiarise themselves with the Metro’s recruitment processes. This, in the wake of reports of con artists luring members of the public with an Ekurhuleni Emergency Services job advertisement and then asking for payment to apply. “In February, a bogus advertisement for 200 fire fighter positions was circulated on social media. Now the Metro has received a report that a woman was called to meet a man at a mall. She was given a blank evaluation form, which she was to fill and hand in at the Kempton Park fire station, in exchange for R3 500,” says Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Sam Modiba. “The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is committed to fair and transparent recruit-ment, selection and placement practices in accordance with the applicable legislation. Positions are advertised openly, as and when approved by the EMM via internal and external channels, including weekly newspapers We have taken a decision to invest in job creation and it is a pity that con artists are utilising our sincere initiatives to prey on job seekers for their own gain,” emphasised Modiba.

Rowers kom skotvry Rooftogte op Heidelberg banke raak erger en meer onrusbarend. Op Maandag 22 April het rowers ‘n groot klip deur ABSA bank in Heidelberg Ueckermannstraat se venster gegooi. Geen informasie oor die verdagtes is al deur gegee nie. Die saak is deur forensiese ontleders ondersoek en geen inligting rakende die verdagtes is gevind nie. Heidelberg polisie vertel dat dit nie die eerste keer is wat boewe

The continual struggle for artistic freedom The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) wishes to register its profound concern over what seems to be a trend of efforts by government to censor freedom of expression, and in this
particular case, free artistic expression. The institute finds this to be distasteful and regressive. The recent incident in the Mbombela Local Municipality, wherein the artwork of artist Kobus Myburgh, was removed from a local art gallery at the request of an ANC official is yet another example of this worrying trend. The artwork depicted President Zuma and former President Nelson Mandela as white men and former Apartheid leaders as black men. As the FXI we do not have a comment on the merit of the work but would like to reiterate our call for the protection of creative artist’s right to free expression as enshrined in the constitution and the promotion of creative worker’s right to provoke debates and discussions on the public domain. The FXI has no problem and even encourages people to criticize and express their views on a piece of art such as the one in Mbombela but the fact that the painting may be offensive to certain people cannot form the basis for its removal from the gallery. As we have indicated in the past, the test of a country’s integrity and genuineness in supporting the principles of freedom of expression lies in its tolerance of expression which causes offence and anger and its insistence that no harm comes to such work. We urge the official who is alleged to have ordered the removal of the painting from the gallery to express his views on the painting or even condemn it if he so wish but not seek to silence the artistic expression. We therefore appeal for the reversal of this decision and for the painting to be restored at the gallery. As FXI we fully support and encourage freedom of expression through various means as long as it does not incite violence or advocate hatred. The FXI supports the artist Kobus Myburgh and we are of the view that we must protect the right of our artists to be provocative and critical because we value ideas, creativity and innovation even when it makes us uncomfortable or angry. We will on the same grounds protect the right of those who reject the work to express their views on this. However, we do not feel that the expression should be censored. In pursuit of the defense of the constitutional right of artistic expression, the FXI intends to make contact with the Mbombela Local Municipality and request reasons for the removal of the painting from the gallery. The institute will explore all avenues to defend the concerned artist’s right to free expression and we appeal to the nation to join us in celebrating our artists and not denigrating them as it was done in the painful past of apartheid.

Taxi drivers urged to carry driving licences Owners of public transport vehicles are urged to ensure that their drivers possess valid documentation are in their vehicles when on a public road. Twelve Katlehong taxi drivers who did not have proper documentation in their vehicles were escorted to court to pay spot fines of R500 on Friday, April 12. The EMPD is aware that some owners commit a very serious offence by employing unregistered and unlicensed persons to transport commuters on our roads. Owners are reminded that in the event of an accident where passengers are either injured or killed, serious legal implications would have to be contended with by the owners who fail to do the right thing. The second phase of this operation will include charging the owner as well for permitting an unlicensed driver to operate a public transport vehicle. Forewarned is forearmed - owners must not cry foul when we start intensifying this campaign to rid our public transport vehicles of drivers who are without valid documentation as we are concerned about the safety and well-being of our commuters.

‘n Dunnotar egpaar het op 20 April vanjaar hul goue huweliks herdenking gevier. Die gelukkige paartjie vertel dat liefde die kern van so ‘n lang gelukkige huwelik is. Die liefde bedek alles. Oom Sakkie en tannie Hannetjie Horn is getroud op 20 April 1963 te Nigel. Oom Sakkie het groot geword in Heidelberg, Gauteng terwyl tannie Hannetjie in Dunnottar woonagtig was. Die egpaar woon nou reeds vir 50 jaar lank in Dunnottar. Hulle is geseënd met twee kinders, Retha en Fanus. Oupa Sakkie en Ouma Hannetjie spog gereeld met hul vier kleinkinders. Die egpaar is ‘n uitstekende voorbeeld vir alle jong egpare om vas te byt tot die bittere einde.

Ride to Read – Exciting Spin-a-Thon As Fulbright fellows from the US State Department working at Sedibeng for this academic year, we are working to equip libraries at each of the four campuses. We believe that libraries will improve our students’ English. We have been working with several nonprofits, publishers, and community outreach organizations in order to fundraise and receive donations for the library. We are incredibly excited about an event being
