The theme chosen by Life Healthcare for this year’s International Nurses’ Day, from duty to privilege, was inspired by its Top 100 nurses for 2013 which was elected out of
8000 nurses in the Life Health Care Group. Annelie Schutte, Unit manager (general ward) of Life Health Suikerbos Clinic, Heidelberg was one of these Top 100 nurses rewarded the Great 100 Nurses award. These are nurses selected annually by their peers as role models who share the special traits that made English nurse Florence Nightingale, whose birthday is celebrated on 12 May, legendary. Dr Sharon Vasuthevan, group nursing executive explains: “Our top nurses, those who feel called to the profession like Florence Nightingale was, tell us that it is an immense honour to share in life’s
most private and emotional moments, not just as a bystander, but actually by supporting and helping those in need. They feel a sense of pride in their chosen roles.” Fasie Smith, nursing operations manager agrees: “Being a nurse puts you in touch with the raw realities of life in a way that no other job can compare. You learn to cherish each moment and to connect deeply with people in their vulnerability. The Executive Mayor of Lesedi Local Municipality of Heidelberg, Lerato Maloka thanked them for their example contributing toward our society for good health and how we should life.

Animal lovers were shocked to see an episode of Carte Blanche which aired on how the animals are treated at the circus and at zoo’s. Residents feel that we were put on earth to take care of the world, not to dominate animals and put them to use to entertain ourselves. Animals get hurt and are forced to do things that is unnatural for animals to do. If the public stands together we can stand against all, that represents animal cruelty. Disappointed viewer

From the desk of Rev Goddess The American twister or torna-do is a natural phenomenon with the possibility of disa-strous results. The devastation that a twister leaves in its path is usually traumatic and sometimes even life threatening. Today I would like to look at something very close to my heart and maybe I am going to push on some buttons but here goes anyway. The twister is a variation from the norm and quite often something that we think is not going to be too dangerous but then it flares up and the disaster is astronomical. In some recent conversations with various people I have again been made aware of how many people who say they are Christians in actual fact live a life that is like the twister – totally out of the norm and expectations of Christianity and ready to flare up into a disaster at any time. The modern way of thinking is that we can live our life with the world being our standard or value system and still feel that the way that we live is okay in God’s eyes. I believe that we as people need to be ever grateful to God for His grace and understanding because in honesty we (I am including myself) are not worthy of His love, care and provision. The fact is that we learn His Word and know the truth but we still choose to live a life that we know is not how we should be living. In Andy Stanley’s latest book he comments and says that he knows people are calling him a motivational speaker and not a
Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church preacher – and he feels that this is okay. He also says that he knows that they edit Jesus’ name out of his transcripts – and he is okay with it. Mark Driscoll has a large church full of young folk and he was recently taken on by a few clergy because of the swearing and bad language that he uses from the pulpit when preaching. His answer was: “This is how the young folk speak and so I come to their level and draw them into church”. This is WRONG. We are bowing down to peer and social pressure. I believe all these ways of living and the way that we as clergy and Christians live is exactly like a twister. The disaster is coming and we need to be aware of that. By bending down to the “way of the world” and to say that this is ok in my mind is wrong and will have disastrous results (we see this already). As clergy and Christians we need to stand up for the truth of the Bible and be brave enough to make a stand for Jesus instead of falling into sin and blaspheme by submitting to peer and social pressure. What is wrong is wrong and we need to be heard to stand by those principles based on Biblical fact. All too often we “bow down to the world” because of finance and income. Well Jesus warns us that we cannot serve to masters – and we need to hear His warning. I would like to challenge us all (I am also guilty) to make a stand for Jesus and be heard – when we live a life that is not the truth of the Bible the result will be disastrous and so let us make the Bible our standard and live in His footsteps. That, after all, is what a Christ Follower should do.

The management of the South African Police Service acknowledges those men and women in blue who work hard and make an extra effort to fight crime. It is reassuring and makes us proud to know that we still have colleagues who are loyal and serve the nation with integrity. In view of recent negative publicity that the SAPS received, it is encouraging to see that our colleagues still continue to give 100%. Many police officials sacrifice their time by working after hours in dangerous conditions to combat crime and to protect the members of the public and their property.
The number of arrests and successful police operations has increased, which shows that most police officials are indeed dedicated. Since January 2013 this year, 14 524 people were arrested. They were arrested for the following crimes: 4 641 arrests for contact crimes ( murder and rape). 4 456 arrests for property-related crimes (robbery, housebreaking). 62 arrests for public violence. 778 arrests for drugrelated crimes. Let us keep up the good work in our strive to combat crime and ensure a safe and secure South Africa for all.

Die belangrikste beginsel wat in ag geneem moet word, is dat versekering nie ‘n spaarplan of belegging is waarin u maandeliks geld belê en na ‘n tydperk vergoed word nie. Versekering is ‘n bindende kontrak tussen u en u versekeringsmaatskappy. In die kontrak onderneem die versekeringsmaatskappy om u skadeloos te stel indien daar ‘n skielike, onbeplande gebeurtenis plaasvind. Soos met enige ander kontrak is daar voorwaardes en bepalings. KEN U KONTRAK: U versekeringsmaatskappy moet, volgens wet, vir u, na aanvang van u polis, ‘n kontrak stuur. Die wet bepaal dat dit u plig is om die inhoud daarvan te verken. Maar wie, in vandag se dae, het tyd om deur ‘n dik dokument te lees? As dít die geval by u is, kry ‘n makelaar en maak ‘n afspraak sodat u makelaar u die voorwaardes en bepalings kan verduidelik en uitlig. Dit sal nie langer as ‘n uur van u tyd in beslag neem nie en sodoende kan u gerus wees dat u versekering in plek is. BYBETALINGS: Maak seker u weet wat u bybetalings is. Moenie dat u verras word met ‘n onverwagte bybetaling wanneer u u voertuig na herstelwerk by die duikklopper wil gaan haal nie. Kyk in watter gevalle u bybetaling meer of minder gaan wees. Daar is ook opsies in plek waar u u bybetalings kan laat wegval deur ‘n hoër premie te betaal. Dan koop u u bybetaling af en u sal geen bybetalings hê indien u skade ly nie. VERANDERINGS: Indien daar enige veranderings in persoonlike omstandighede is bv. adresverandering, gereelde bestuurder van u voertuig, foutiewe alarm, ensovoorts, moet u dit onmiddellik aan u versekeringsmaatskappy verklaar. Hulle sal dan op hulle beurt die voorwaardes aanpas en/of jou inlig wat om te doen sodat jy nie in die geval van ‘n eis benadeel sal word nie. ADVIES: Versekeringsadvies is gratis. Kontak ‘n hulpvaardige makelaar en win soveel advies as moontlik in. Neem net kennis dat indien u van ‘n direkte versekeraar gebruik maak, advies moeiliker bekombaar is. U sal moontlik die maatskappy se inbelsentrum moet skakel vir advies. U vrae sal ook so gerig moet wees dat dit die nodige advies uitlok aangesien hulle u net met u navraag sal help deur net feitlike inligting te gee. OMBUDSMAN: Die Ombudsman vir kortermynversekering is ‘n gratis hulpmiddel wat u tot u beskikking het indien u voel ‘n eis het nie volgens kontrak verloop nie. U kan u saak aan die Ombudsman rapporteer en die saak sal van daar af verder hanteer word. Die Ombudsman is dus die waghond vir die publiek en beskerm u teen onbillike optrede van versekeraars. Besonderhede van die Ombudsman is ook in u kontrak beskikbaar.
On April 25, 2013 UCW participated in support of the Men in the Making campaign by hosting 20 young boys from various high schools in Duduza Township. The campaign was directed by UCW’s CSI committee members. UCW’s focus was mainly on the maths and science matriculants who where given an opportunity to learn about production process and different engineering fields. The aim was to encourage and expose the young boys into the engineering fields as there is a dire need of engineers in the country and in the company. The day
started with a warm welcome by our HR Director, Themba Fikizolo, followed by a company overview by our Manufacturing Director, Glen Adam with our Financial Director, Guy Melville. The boys were then handed over to their mentors for their work-place exposure in the production plant, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering and chemical engineering departments. The boys had to give feedback on their learning experience and they thanked UCW for awarding them the opportunity to be part of the Men in the Making.

Rowers moet lig loop want met die hulp van Veiligheidsinstansies, die SAPD asook Metro Polisie gaan hulle hul moses tee kom.

Opportunity to Hire Tractors and Agricultural Implements Following President Zuma’s announcement in 2009, that government intends to assist emerging farmers gain access to mechanized agricultural implements in order to achieve their objectives of food security in rural areas. To this end, Lesedi Local Municipality was recently offered the custodianship of tractors and agricultural equipment that local emerging farmers can hire at a cost
determined by the Agricultural Research Institute. These implements are available for hire with a tractor driven by a licensed and trained driver: Slasher; Disc Harrow; Planter; Boom Sprayer; Disc Plough; Cultivator; 4-row plough. Lesedi Local Municipality offers the service to all emerging farmers in the area, including food gardens based in schools and other community projects that may require the service.
The municipality urges emerging farmers to apply in person at the Development and Planning Offices with access in du Preez Street. Offices are open between 08h00 till 16h00, Mondays to Fridays. Fit-play & active kids at Gym 2000 In our society today it is not always easy or safe for children to be playing outside and since South Africa is the country in the world with the most obese children a full day at the Discovery Fitness Convention was dedicated to children. Anne-Marie saw the need for kids to get healthy and active and along with Crystelle Green recently completed their “Kids Development Diploma Course”. As from the May 13 at GYM2000 they will do active sessions with the kids. Toddlers 2-5 years on Monday,Tuesday and Thursday 10h0010h30; for Pre-schoolers 6-12 years on Monday, Wednesday & Thursday 15h0016h00. The activities will include the following development principles, gross & fine motor skills, muscle development, balance, proprioception, co-ordination, spatial awareness,tactile development, sensory processing, strategic thinking and
generall well-being as well as teaching them healthy eating habits. The sessions will be for 2-12 years old kids. For the toddlers 23 years we will focus predominantly on skill development, as the fundamental movement skills will be required to perform much more complex tasks expected at later stage. For the pre-schooler 4-5 years we will focus on motor skills, these will further refine their co-ordination, balance and judgement and teach them to participate in team sports. For the early school years 6-12 years children need physical activity to build strength, coordination and confidence. Movement skills must be acquired and learned in a progressive sequence, from basic moves to more complex ones. It is important to instil a good attitude towards physical activity to encourage their participation in physical activity for the rest of their life. Children from the ages of 6 and
older are recommended to participate in approximately 60 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week. Research suggests that less than 40% of children between the ages of 2-12 years old are receiving their recommended amount of exercise and this get less as they get older. Appropriate and adequate nutrition forms an integral part in a child’s growth and
