A home-made heroin substitute is having a horrific effect on thousands of drug addicts known as krokodil! It is desomorphine, a synthetic opiate many times more powerful than heroin that is created from a complex chain of mixing and chemical reactions. It is a drug for the poor, and its effects are horrific. It was given its reptilian name because its poisonous ingredients quickly turn the skin scaly. You do not have to use this for long before you have rotting sores on the back of your neck. Essentially, they are injecting poison directly into their flesh. They have to be injected with extremely strong tranquilisers just to keep them from passing out from the pain.” Dr Yegorov says krokodil users are instantly identifiable because of their smell. “It’s that smell of iodine that infuses all their clothes,” he says. ”There’s no way to wash it out, all you can do is burn the clothes. Any flat that has been used as a krokodil cooking house is best forgotten about as a place to live. You’ll never get that smell out of the flat.” Unlike heroin, where the hit can last for several hours, a krokodil high only lasts between 90 minutes and two hours.the “cooking” process takes at least half an hour, being a krokodil addict is basically a fulltime job. You don’t sleep much when you’re on krokodil, as you need to wake up every couple of hours for another hit. People become full-time krokodil addicts, giving them a life expectancy of less than a year.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality wishes to warn the public to not fall prey to false bursary scheme advertisements which are circulating on online media at present. It has come to the Metro’s attention that the website Matric411.co.za has placed information detailing the fields of study which the municipality’s bursary caters for, the value of the bursary and June 30 as the closing date for applications. “The community is advised that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s community bursaries are advertised annually during the months of August or September. Advertisements are placed in local newspapers, the municipality’s website, at municipal offices, libraries and via ward committee councilors,” continued Modiba. Community members are encouraged to contact the following officials to enquire about the community bursary scheme and to confirm authenticity of adverts: Matsie Molotsi on 011 999-6342; Liezel Simons on 011 999-0039; or Minnie Oosthuizen on 011 999-3632. Mind the gap From the desk of Rev Goddess Many students are approaching the end of their school career as they start preparing for the Matric Exams. Many students have suddenly realized that they have not taken the time to think of what they are Rev Goddess, Heidelberg going to do after school. Methodist Church The years seemed to go past so fast that where they thought they had a lot of time to think about a career they all of a sudden find that they are “too late” and still do not know in what direction they want to study or work. To further the dilemma of not knowing what to do the fact is that there are many more people looking for work than actual work available. The net result is that many young folk end up doing any work where they can get employment and are generally not very happy and a person who is not happy will generally not be very productive or positive about their job. So what to do? Many students take what they feel is the “easy way out” and decide to take a “gap year”. This has become very common and many feel that this will give them time to think, have a break from school/learning and also give them time to “mature”. When I chat to young folk and they are considering this I wish for “the old days” when we all went to the army – a forced “gap year” and we grew up very fast from “children” to “young adults”. But the fact is that there are pros and cons to taking a gap year. I am not going to choose sides but I would like to take some time to look at some of these pros and cons and hopefully help some folk make a decision as to what they are going to do after leaving school. Taking a gap year Pros: There is a possible time of maturing and “finding your feet” after school.There is time to think of what direction you would like to move in. There is time during the year (if you have not left the country) to visit some places and experience different work conditions. You could maybe make some money and save it for when you start your chosen career. Cons: The maturing could be a time of “fun in the world” and the person could fall prey to the grips of worldly experiences (eg drugs, alcohol, sex etc).In taking a gap year the person does not do anything in the line of his/her career so after the “gap year” (or two) is completed the person is one or two years behind all his/her friends and it is very difficult to “catch up” to your school friends.If the person takes a gap year overseas then when they come back they are not only one or two years behind but have also lost contact with their friends and so often find themselves “out in the cold”. Many folk think that they can make a fortune during their gap year but this very rarely becomes a reality.Generally speaking it seems that people are more likely to get a job in the direction that they want to move in by starting straight after school rather than being “out of circuit” for a year or two. These are just a few pointers – hope they help you to make up your mind as to what you are going to be doing with your life after school. All I can say is…MIND THE GAP.

Onpadvaardige fiets! ‘n Man onder weg van Tulbach straat na Kingsweg in Nigel, het in ‘n split sekonde met ‘n aankomende voertuig gebots, Die fiets eienaar se fiets het geen remme nie en die fietsryer het gereken dat hy die voertuig sou ontduik. Die bestuurder van die voertuig het haar hulp aangebeid en gemerk dat die fietsryer nie beseer is nie. Toe die fietsryer verneem dat die ambulans reeds oppad is het hy sommer net daar en dan plat op die teerpad bly lê.

Springsweg genaamd Olifantstraat. Met nadere ondersoek is daar gevind dat na bewering jy ‘n herlaaibare flitslig van 30 meter in die gat gooi en niks kan sien nie. Die gat is pikdonker, lyk nie diep nie, maar is wyd. Die vraag egter is hoe veilig is die gat? Elke dag stroom die vragmotors, voertuie, asook voetgangers die straat op en af, waar die gat ongeveer so tien tot 15 meter vanaf die straat is. Van bakpoort tot stuurboort kon ons steeds nie antwoorde kry. Wie kan help? Of dink die publiek nie die oop gat is gevaarlik nie.

Nuwe skoolhoof in Balfour Meneer Breedt nuwe skoolhoof van Hoër- en Laerskool Balfour kom van Ermelo waar hy diep spore getrap het. Hy voltooi sy hoërskoolloopbaan aan Ermelo Hoërskool. Reeds op skool toon hy groot liefde vir musiek en sport. Hy speel gholf en krieket vir Ermelo Hoërskool en ook krieket vir die destydse Oos-Transvaalspan. Vanaf graad 8, speel hy tuba in die skool se orkes. Hy speel in die Transvaalse Onderwysdepartement-, Noord-Transvaal- en die Nasionale Jeugorkes. Na skool het hy by die weermag aangesluit waar hy ‘n luitenant was en ook in die

leerorkes gespeel het. Daarna het hy musiekonderwys aan die onderwyskollege in Pretoria (NKP) gaan studeer waar hy student in die Ambassadeurskoor en die TRUKoperakoor gesing het. Hy speel ook vier jaar tuba in die Transvaalse- en die Nasionale Filharmoniese Orkes. Tussendeur het hy vir Noord-Transvaal, Tuks en NKP krieket gespeel en steeds tyd gevind om vir Pionier-manskoshuis rugby en krieket te speel. Hy draf ook uit as stut vir Centurion se rugbyklub en die Carletonligaspan. In 1995 het hy ‘n pos by Hoërskool Ermelo aanvaar waar hy die skool se blaas-, Dixieen kadetorkes twaalf jaar lank afgerig het. Onder sy leiding was die skool se orkes ses jaar agtereenvolgens die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioen. Meneer Breedt was deel van die SuidoosTransvaal (SOT) orkes-, krieket- en gholfvereniging. Hy is later verkies tot voorsitter van die SOT-krieketvereniging. Hy tree ook op as voorsitter van die Nasionale Orkesvereniging (SAMOV). As sport- en bemarkingsbestuurder by Ermelo Hoërskool het hy onder andere gehelp met die organisering van die 0/16 Grant Khomo-rugbyweek in 2007, die wedstryd tussen die Pumas en die Griekwas in die Vodacomreeks in 2008 en die Vodacomreeks-wedstryd tussen die Pumas en die Cheetahs twee jaar gelede. Hy het ook krieket- en gholfspanne afgerig. Afgesien van skoolverwante aktiwiteite het meneer Breedt 1994 ‘n professionele fotografie-kwalifikasie aan Centurion Kollege voltooi. Hy spesialiseer in veral troues en perdesport.

Ongelukkig beleef ek nou slapelose nagte en kry tye wat ek angstig is. Ek doen my bes om dit te verwerk want ek het ‘n pragtige twee jarige seuntjie wat die lewe die moeite werd maak. MEISIES! : Ek wil jul waarsku deur my ondervinding! Moet nooit dink dat so iets nie met jou kan gebeur nie! Sorg altyd dat jy met ‘n langbroek aan gaan stap en probeer nooit alleen te stap nie, kry iemand wat saam met jou kan stap. As my klere drag die van ‘n rokkie was kan jul, julself in dink, waarna toe dit sou lei en hoe erg die trauma dan werklik sou wees. Die beste is natuurlik om altyd in groepe te beweeg al is jy volgens jou op ‘n veilige plek waar jy nie so iets verwag nie. Daagliks het ek hierdie pad saam met my hond gestap. Op 9 Mei omstreeks drie uur die middag, besluit ek om ‘n ent te gaan stap, nadat ek feitlik die hele dag aan my studies gewy het. Twee van die mans het my aan die arm gegryp en agter die kraghuisie inforseer. Hulle het my geskop en geslaan, wat soos ‘n ewigheid vir my gevoel het en ek glo dit was miskien net ‘n minuut of twee. Dit voel soos ‘n ewigheid omdat jy bewus is daarvan dat niemand sien wat besig is om met jou te gebeur nie. Ek kan die angs en vrees nie beskryf wat ek ervaar het nie. Op Sondag, 19 Mei 2013 het die Suikerbosrand R42 cycling club challenge, waaraan meer as 400 ryers deelgeneem het, plaasgevind. Ryers kon 10, 20, 30, 35 of 70km aandurf. Gesinne en vriende kon almal deelneem, geen ouderdoms beperkinge as dit by fietsry kom nie. Dis een van die mees gewilde sportsoorte waarin die hele gesin kwaliteit tyd saam kan benut.

Warriors, are you brave enough? Close to 15 000 participants over the last few months, have heard this when standing at the start point of Warrior Race For The Brave, South Africa’s biggest Obstacle Race. Two categories take part in the race: Black Ops and Warrior Rookie. Black Ops consists of 20km race with 30 obstacles and Warrior Rookie 6-8km with 15 Obstacles. Who can take part in this? Anyone who is brave enough to endure freezing temperatures, higher than high obstacles and mountains of mud. Teams or solo participants take part. Claude Eksteen who is a former South African and German Tri-Athlete champion, finished the Black Ops first. Yolande Maclean who won five gold medals in previous Comrades marathons were one of the woman athletes. Actors from Binneland and 7de Laan were also seen taking part. Warrior Race #3 took place on the weekend of May 11 - 12 at The Big Red Barn in Olifantsfontein, temperatures hovered between 14-18 degrees celsius but, a few athletes where standing around bare chested and in shorts, some with tutus and others with capes and of course the more serious athletes dressed for the event. The Tower of Rage is a 5.5m high platform and at the bottom a pool 3.7m deep, jumping of this had many a Warrior crying, screaming, laughing, any fear of heights are overcome in an instant. Arctic Mud, Mud Monster and Avalanche are just to name a few of the obstacles that will not just challenge you physically but also emotionally. Fun? Yes tremendous fun! Mud in your teeth and water slides makes you giggle again like when you were playing in your parents’ backyard, helping hands from strangers are there to support fellow warriors, and cries of laughter are heard everywhere. After finishing with bodies covered in mud and goose bumps as ice water still drips from them, everyone has a big smile at this huge accomplishment, talking about their awesome experience and how it made them feel, asking when is the next race and venue. Many from Heidelberg and Nigel took part: Ockert and Tacita Brits, Jaco and Jeandri Ligthelm, Rassie and Wendy Erasmus, Hannes and Melanie Botha, Justin and Chantel Conte, Elizmé Burger, Shellain Bischoff, Leandré Botha and Rachelle Cooper. Will they all return to the ‘battlefield’ and be true warriors? Yes definitely! Taking with them more friends and family to enjoy this adventure. Warrior Race #4 will be held at the Red Stone Estate in Hartebeespoortdam, on June 22 -23 2013. Entries now open! This is seriously is a must do on every-one’s bucket list.
