All hell breaking loose
Cosato together with the ANC and SAKP has planned a massive protest march to Hoër Volkskool after a disciplinary hearing, where a black learner was expelled. Around 3000 members from the ANC and its alliance partners were set to march against racism at the school on Friday August 23 at 09:00. They planned to hand over a memorandum to the Department of Education, petitioning the School Board’s decision. An accusation of racism is being made towards the school after an incident in which black and white learners were involved in an altercation on the school grounds. This led to several suspensions at school and the expulsion of a black learner. The Governing Body of Hoër Volkskool applied for an urgent high court order to prevent the march from happening. Matriculants are writing preliminary examinations at this time. The High Court in Pretoria has granted an urgent interdict preventing the ANC in Lesedi, Gauteng, from marching to Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg on Friday. ANC Lesedi zonal chairman, Ernest Dlamini said that the party respects the court order. In terms of the court order, no protest action will take place until after September 23, 2013. The expelled learner was charged with the following 2 charges: COUNT 1: That the accused learner assaulted or threatened to assault another person in that he was involved in a fight at school between two groups of learners. COUNT 2: That the accused learner was in possession of any dangerous weapon in that the he picked up two (2) bricks during a f ight at the school and assaulted an uninvolved and innocent female learner with one of them by throwing the brick at
her indiscriminately, hitting her on the shoulder. During the course of the disciplinary hearing the School called two witnesses to testify against the accused learner. The accused learner also testified in his defense and did not call any witnesses. A Grade 12 female learner at the school testified that she was standing amongst a group learners who were watching the fight as bystanders she saw the accused learner - who was not taking part in the fight during that time - having a brick in his hand and throwing it into the air towards them. The brick was hurtled at a trajectory and she lost sight of the flight of the brick but dodged as other learners shouted “brick!, brick!”. As she dodged to the side the brick hit her on the shoulder. A second witness also testified. The expelled learner testified and told his version to the Committee. His version was in stark contradiction with that of the 2 witnesses who testified against him and his evidence was also both contradictory and improbable as far as the disputed facts were
concerned. The fifth accused learner was found guilty on both counts after the plea explanations on both charges tendered by him were scrutinized, video footage of the events was studied in his presence and answers to questions posed to him on the events depicted in the video were analyzed, the exhibits were considered and the testimony by the two witnesses were evaluated. After proper deliberation the Committee unanimously decided to find the learner guilty as charged on both counts. The learner and his parent were informed. The Governing Body has an obligation to ensure an environment conducive for learning to all learners attending the school and to protect the learners and teachers of the school by not
tolerating in the school premises such behavior as the accused learner revealed. In light of the above, the Committee resolved to suspend the accused learner, who was already suspended as a precautionary measure since the date of the incident, for a further 14 days. The Committee also resolved to recommend to the Head of Department that learner be permanently expelled from the relevant school, being a serious danger and threat to the learners of the school. The Head of Department was requested to acknowledge the very serious nature of the two transgressions that the accused learner had committed and to confirm the recommendation of permanent expulsion from the School in both instances.

Peace I leave with you The title of this article is the words uttered by Jesus in John 14:27. These are words that have helped many and have been the words that many have “hung on to” during times of stress and concern. As I peruse the local newspapers I am very aware that there seems to be very little true peace in this beautiful town we call home. There are constantly reports of violence, of theft, of accidents and of heart sore. The question that I ponder is “WHY?” Why is it

and confusion and feel that they are making a difference to the people by creating this uncertainty. The truth is that all too often the people who are really affected by the violence and unrest are not thought of and end up getting the “short end of the stick”. The second possible reason that we tend to see so much violence and so little peace is that people think that peace will come their way without having to put any effort into the situation. The attitude of “best left alone” is often embraced and the people hope that the problem will “go away” and that the problem will be replaced by peace. Let me share an example of what I mean. If you are married you will know that marriage is hard work (albeit a blessing) and

that there seems to be so much aggravation between people who God created to live in harmony and love? Why is it that people seem to struggle to get on with each other? Why is it that this peace that we are told of by Jesus seems so far off from the life that we are living and in fact some feel that this peace will never be a reality? The first possible reason that I would like to offer is that there are too many people who do not want peace. People seem to share untruths about situations that have a violent and inaccurate reaction from the parties involved. More often than not these “instigators” are not named and seem to be people who do not live in our town or direct area. These people often want unrest

From the desk of Rev Ray Goddess without the hard work there are often arguments and misunderstandings. Put some effort into a marriage and the net result is usually a peaceful relationship with a lot of joy and understanding. Peace in today’s world is hard work – and we need to step up to the plate and make the effort. So how do we find this peace? What do we need to do to get this peace? It is here that I feel that we need to turn back to the promise made by Jesus. Jesus tells us that He will give us peace and it is this peace that we need to strive for. This peace that Jesus speaks of is a peace that is based on and thrives on love. The peace that Jesus speaks of is seeing everyone equally as God sees us and to work on that relationship – not trying to be superior over any other person. The peace of Jesus is not only based on love but also on understanding – and taking time to try and understand the other people’s point of view. The peace of Jesus is brought about with communication and not violence based on TRUTH and NOT hearsay. In ending I would like to share one principle that I try to apply in my life. If someone comes to me and says “I heard” or “I was told” I ask the person to identify who told them the story. If they cannot share that with me I will listen to the story but not necessary take the story as “truth”. If it was truth surely the person would be able to share who or what their source is. Maybe we could all try and apply this principle into our lives when looking at situations and then work towards under-standing and loving as Jesus understands and loves. In this way we WILL experience the peace that Jesus Rev Ray promised.

R2.1 million loss
A gust of unprecedented livestock theft cases occurred in the country since June 2013 with specific reference to livestock theft cases that occurred on the perimeters of the Gauteng province which let to a total loss of R2.1 million for livestock producers. It must be noted that these are those cases that made headlines in the agriculture communities and all have the same modus operandi. In another case not directly linked to the theft of these cattle 120 sheep was stolen on August 7 near Balfour at an estimated value of R180 000. In all these theft cases the same truck was used to load the cattle. A prominent fixture of the truck is the blue tailgate whilst the rest of the truck is white, further it is evident that this truck is actually build for mass grain transportation and the cattle rails is not of a high quality. Evidence found of paint, tyre marks etc. and the way of loading cattle at loading pens close to the N1 and other major routes are the same. In all the cases the truck headed for Gauteng but there is no further evidence that the truck and cattle remained in the province and the possibility that
the loads ended up in other provinces cannot be excluded. The only conclusion that can be made is that the same crime syndicate is involved in these crimes. Livestock producers are not only losing their cattle and money in this process but the economic viability of their farming operations is put under severe strain to such an extent that the food security in the country is jeopardised. A 78 years old granny was robbed of her jewellery and handbag with bank cards by unknown male suspects along Steenbok Street, Jordaan Park in Heidelberg on August 22 at about 11:00. It is alleged that the complainant was in the house busy sewing when suspects broke the burglar lock and gained entry into the house. She was shocked to see suspects pointing a f irearm at her and demanded her jewellery and money. Robbers nabbed Two armed men both 19 years of age were arrested for robbing a 22 year old victim of cash, bluebag, and house keys at gun point at the open veld near Flam-mik Street, Boschfontein in Heidelberg on August 19 at about 14:30. It is alleged that the victim was walking on a footpath towards Ratanda Location when he was confronted by two unknown male suspect who pointed him with a firearm, demanded money, cell phone and other valuable items. The victim saw a police vehicle, reported the incident and the police responded immediately. Quick response by Captain Zulu, Sgt. Vusumuzi Zondo, Cst Vusi Mashabane, Cst Lebo Malahle, and Cst Nndwakhulu Singo led to the arrest of the two suspects. The arrested suspect will appear before Heidelberg Magistrate Court soon.

People in charge of safety within Heidelberg are not keen to apprehend the youth. Although drugs are consumed in certain circles for recreational reasons, the under-lying reason is different. Most people suffer from low-self-esteem and are in desperate situations in terms of poverty and bleek financial prospects. Drugs offer a hopeless trip to no-man’s land. Fist fight A Fist fight between two scholars of Hoër Volkskool, Heidelberg occurred during the first break at school on Friday, August 2. As they became embroiled in the fight, friends from various sides rushed in to assist. In the commotion several male learners on both sides of the friendship who tried to intervene, got hit as well. They retaliated by hitting back indiscriminately on both sides, thereby joining the fray that grew to a “free for all” situation that took the utmost effort to bring under control. As a precautionary measure to calm the emotions, a total of 15 male learners from both sides were suspended from attending the school for 2 days and urgent disciplinary hearings were set up for Tuesday August 6. Altogether 17 male learners were eventually notified to appear before the Disciplinary Committee. On this evening the disciplinary process against 12 learners were concluded, all of them having been arraigned on a charge of assault or threats of assault and 11 of them having been found guilty. On August 7 & 8, 2013 a Disciplinary Committee comprising of three members conducted a disciplinary hearing where 17 learners of the school were charged with serious misconduct. The Disciplinary Committee decided to suspend this recommendation for three (3) months on 2 very strict conditions: 1. That they shall not be found guilty of the same transgression or of a transgression containing similar elements or become involved in any general fight at school during the period of suspension. 2. That they shall serve community service at school during a period of detention at school. As a further corrective measure a stipulation was included that makes it compulsory for each of them to attend the next course, seminar or program that deals with anger management, social integration, anti-bullying strategies or any similar subject to be instituted by the School and the Gauteng Education Department in the near future. On Auguast 7 the disciplinary hearing of the 5 remaining learners, who faced more serious charges than the f irst 12 learners, commenced. The two learners who started the fight were amongst these. They both pleaded guilty on a charge of assault and were expelled from attending school, both of them faced a period of suspension of twelve (12) months and a detention period of three (3) months. The irony is that these two male learners have made peace with each other and are now the best of friends.
House burned The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality condemns the burning of a councillor’s house in Duduza last week. Councillor Silas Letsimo’s house was burnt down in an incident whose motive remains unclear. Cllr Letsimo’s two young children, who were in the house at the time of the incident, escaped unharmed. A case of malicious damage to property and arson is being opened at the local police station. “The vandalising and damaging of public and private property can never be justif iable under any circumstances. It remains unclear what is the reason behind this attack. We hope the police will be able to bring to book those behind this criminal act,” Cllr Patricia Kumalo said.

Die lede en direksie het geen verpligting teenoor enige buite instansie, of persoon wat die toekenning van huise betref nie en bepaal sy eie toelatings vereistes. Wonings word streng volgens meriete toegeken soos byvoorbeeld ouderdom, datum van aansoek (oudste aansoek eerste), gesondheid en finansiële vermoëns. Die doelstellings van die maatskappy is om bekostigbare behuising teen bekostigbare heffing aan bejaarde persone tussen 55 en 70 jaar te verskaf. Die 70 jaar beperking is in April vanjaar ingestel, omdat bevind is dat ouer persone net vir ‘n kort periode hier sal moet bly, voordat hul dan weer sal moet verhuis na ‘n versorgeenheid. ‘n Grasie tydperk sal egter vir aansoekers, wat reeds voor April 2013, aansoek gedoen het, tot 73 jarige ouderdom toegelaat word. Die oord beskik nie oor ‘n versorgeenheid of siekeboeg nie, en kan ook weens
finansiële redes, nie daarvoor voorsiening maak nie. Die R200 wat per aansoek gehef word is ‘n nie terugbetaalbare administrasie fooi en is jaarliks betaalbaar om die aansoek van krag te hou. As dit nie jaarliks betaal word nie verval die aansoek. Die inwoners koop ‘n lewensreg, wat hul dan die reg gee om hier te woon, solank as hul lewe. As hul besluit om die oord vroeër vrywilliglik te verlaat, is dit hul opsie om dit uit te oefen. Negentig persent van die oorspronklike koopprys word dan aan hul terugbetaal. Die woning kan nie aan iemand anders deur die inwoners verkoop word nie aangesien dit nie sy eiendom is nie, maar in werklikheid net ‘n langtermyn huurkontrak is. Die inwoners betaal ‘n maandelikse heff ing wat die volgende uitgawes insluit: administrasie, eiendomsbelasting, versekering, sekuriteit, tuindienste, vullis verwydering en onderhoud van geboue. Geen subsidies of enige vorm van finansiële hulp word van owerhede ontvang nie, inteendeel werk ons baie nou saam met die Nigel Vereniging vir Senior Burgers en maak ons inwoners en Eeufeespark ‘n reuse bydrae tot die organisasie se werksaamhede en voortbestaan.

Passie vir minderbevoorregtes Kleindogter stap in oupa se voetspore en besluit om haarself by die Rotary Anns in te huldig. Bianca Scott, ‘n dinamiese jongvrou van Nigel het ‘n passie om minderbevoorregte mense te bedien. Oupa, ouma en haar moeder was almal toegewyde Rotariers vir baie jare. Bianca se oupa was jare gelede die president van die organisasie, waartydens sy met baie geleenthede saam met haar oupa mense besoek en bedien het. Sy het ‘n groot liefde vir die min-derbevoorregtes, want hul dankbare harte is so opreg vir die min waarmee hul tevrede moet wees. Tydens die laaste Rotary Anns vergadering is ‘n pizza aand gereël om fondse vir die minderbevoor regte kinders in te samel.

Vasgevang in die kake van verslawing ‘n Dekade van Wimpie Mouton se lewe is verskeur en verwoes as gevolg van dwelms. Engelkind na hemelhuis Jadine Kleynhans was ‘n engeltjie kind, wat in die hart van die gemeenskap ingekruip het. In haar kort leeftydjie het hierdie klein mensie meer beproewings en siekte geken. Op 15 Augustus 2013 is Jadine op die vroëe ouderdom van 2 jaar en 4 maande na haar hemelhuis geneem. Haar begrafnis het op 20 Augustus vanuit die Heidelberg Hervormde Kerk om 14:00 plaasgevind. By die diens het talle persone sagte speelgoed saamgebring wat geskenk gaan word aan minderbevoorregte kinders.
Jadine is op die 3 April 2011 sewe weke te vroeg gebore. Sy het ‘n skamele 1.8 kg geweeg. Ouers Madelyn Jansen Van Vuuren en Japie Kleynhans het twee dae nadat Jadine gebore is verneem dat sy asemhalings probleme ondervind. Jadine is na Johannesburg Algemene Hospitaal geneem waarna die medisie verneem het dat sy ‘n vergrote hart het en onder ontwikkelde longe. Vier dae later het sy ‘n hartoperasie ondergaan. Die operasie was ‘n reuse sukses en sy het goed aangesterk. Ongelukkig was dit nie die einde van hierdie dapper dogtertjie se stryd nie. Sy is daarna opgeneem vir meningitis, waar hulle ‘n dreineringspypie in haar skedel moes aanbring omrede vog veroorsaak het dat haar koppie swel. Sy het epileptiese aanvalle as gevolg hiervan gekry wat haar spraak, sig en die vermoë om te kan kommunikeer aangetas het. Dit het ‘n rukkie goed gegaan met Jadine. Sy het goed gevorder met die fisioterapie wat sy ontvang het en haar toestand het verbeter. Die laaste drie maande het Jadine se toestand egter versleg en het sy meermale in die hospitaal deur gebring as by die huis as gevolg van TB Meningitis. Op Maandag die 12 Augustus 2013 is sy ontslaan uit Witbank Hospitaal na ‘n lang siekbed. Dit het beter gegaan met haar, maar op Donderdag 15 Augustus het sy ‘n terugslag gehad waar die ambulans personeel van Langamed, in Witbank, tevergeefs geveg het om haar lewe. Dokters beweer dat sy as gevolg van natuurlike oorsake gesterf het. Die familie betuig hul dank aan die Langamed Ambulans dienste in Witbank, ouma Hester Cronje Meintjies, Nadine,

Fietstoer van hoop
As die noodlot ‘n mens tref, is dit maklik om in sak en as te gaan sit. Veral as jou hele lewe drie keer in minder as tien jaar in mekaar tuimel, soos in die geval met Helgard Müller van Balfour. Een ongeluk het Helgard se lewe verewig verander op 22 Mei 2007, nadat hy sy linkervoet verloor het toe hy per ongeluk in ‘n graankuil (grain bin) beland het. Hy het met alle mag probeer om homself uit die gat uit op te trek, maar dit was te laat sy linkervoet was vasgekeer tussen die ketting en vervoerband. Sy vriend en kollega, Mike Stroman, het wonderbaarlik net op die regte oomblik opgedaag en kon hy Helgard red. Hy het deur die smal deur van die graankuil geklim en die masjiene afgeskakel. Helgard se voet was bykans heeltemal van sy been afgeskeur en is geamputeer. Helgard het al hoe dieper in die put van depressie ingeval. “By tye het dit gevoel asof daar nie meer vir my ‘n rede is om te bly lewe nie. Ongeveer drie maande na my ongeluk het ek na ‘n tv program gekyk oor twee Amerikaanse soldate wat beide hul arms en bene verloor het. Dit het my oë laat oopgaan oor hoe bevoorreg ek eintlik was, ek het ten minste nog albei my arms en een been. Dit het my hele sienswyse verander. Ek het bewus geword van hoe my denke my sienswyse beïnvloed en ontdek dat, deur te fokus daarop om positief eerder as negatief te wees, my hele lewe kan verander. Ek het geweet dat ek aan myself moes bewys dat ek tot ‘n sekere mate steeds ‘n normale lewe kon lei,” vertel hy. Hy het besluit om na Egipte te reis waar hy die pad van Dahab na Nuwiebaa (ongeveer 70km) aangedurf het. “Dit het my twee dae geneem strandlangs om Nuwiebaa te bereik en oppad het my prostese afgebreek. Vir die volgende drie weke het ek met ‘n kierie deur die Sinai-woestyn en Israel geloop,” sê hy. “Alhoewel die mense waarby ek geloop het gedink het dat ek ‘n boemelaar was, was ek die gelukkigste wat ek in ‘n lang tyd was, want ek het deur hierdie reistog aan myself bewys dat ek ‘n normale lewe, met ‘n paar aanpassings, kon lei.” ‘n Jaar na sy ongeluk het hy besluit om te begin fietsry en het hy ‘n bergfiets aangeskaf. Hy het elke dag gery en stelselmatig het sy bene so versterk dat hy selfs aan bergfietskompetisies kon begin deelneem, insluitende die Kaap Argus fietstoer in 2010. Die bergfietsresies was egter nie genoeg nie – hy wou iets besonders doen om ander in ‘n soortgelyke situasie as hy te inspireer. So is sy droom gebore en hy het besluit om in September vanjaar ‘n 6 000 km reis op sy bergfiets al langs die Suid-Afrikaanse kuslyn aan te pak. “Sover ek weet sal ek die eerste persoon met een been wees wat so ‘n reis aanpak,” meen hy. “Ek sal ook geld insamel vir die Wes-Kaap Vereniging vir persone met gestremdhede, want baie gestremde mense het nie die geld om die korrekte toerusting te koop nie.” Met hierdie reistog wil hy nie net ander mense met geamputeerde ledemate inspireer nie, hy wil aan alle mense wêreldwyd bewys dat, maak nie saak wat in jou lewe gebeur nie, jy is verantwoordelik vir jou denke en dade. Helgard beplan om op 1 September met sy fietstoer af te skop. “My vriende en familie se ondersteuning en geloof inspireer my. Ek doen dit vir hulle.” Die fietstoer begin in Kaapstad, waarna hy na Oranjemund in Namibië ry. Daarna ry hy na Messina, Louis Trichardt, Nelspruit, Richardsbaai en Durban, voordat hy met die kuslyn terugry Kaapstad toe. “Ek beoog om die toer binne drie tot vier weke af te handel, maar as ek realisties is, sal dit seker ses weke duur,” meen hy. Sy vrou, Hanlie, sal saam met hom ry ter ondersteuning en daar sal motors wees waarin hul kos, drinkgoed, klere en ander bagasie vervoer word. Langs die pad sal hulle in gastehuise oorslaap en waar dit nie moontlik is nie, sal hulle uitkamp. Vra jy vir Helgard wat sy grootste vrees vir die fietstoer is, is sy eerlike antwoord: “Ek het geen vrese nie, want die lewe het my geleer om geen vrese te hê nie en net ten volle te leef!
